- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: I know that you're going to great lake it up and then be back ready to cover some football but you've been in the mix this week.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_03]: This has been very hectic here in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_03]: uh... we arrived sunday and uh... been working all day monday all day Tuesday here we are wednesday uh... was up late last night cranking out the uh... the content from an arbor talk to a bunch of players yesterday bunch of mission players who had a lot to say right and you said you've been waiting uh... all off season for this i've been waiting twelve years for this man
- 1:24[SPEAKER_03]: Back in 2014 is when this thing was announced.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_03]: 2014 we looked ahead and said, God, 2016's, are we going to be alive then?
- 1:31[SPEAKER_03]: Or are we going to be working?
- 1:33[SPEAKER_03]: Or are we going to be retired?
- 1:34[SPEAKER_03]: What's going on?
- 1:36[SPEAKER_03]: We broke that story.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_03]: Or we helped break that story back in 2012.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_03]: The OU was playing Michigan.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_03]: And here we are, just a few days away from kickoff of the second game of that series.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_03]: So, been looking forward to this trip for a long, long time.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: Crazy we've had a pandemic since then we've had a long night at the US open since then Two high schools Oklahoma's one two high schools and nearly one three since then Tiger put another master's on the bull I feel like we could do the like the big timeline of major things that have happened.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's pretty incredible My road trip partner car style will be rehashing I guess the Knoxville trip is probably the farthest we've got which went well so carcini.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: I guess Oklahoma fans should be happy that you and I
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: are going to be headed out on four wheels and not in an airplane this week.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, ever since I've joined the beat, this team's been pretty good on the road.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that'll continue in an arbor, but prayers up to you, having the deal with me for about 15 hours in the car over a couple of days.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm excited, man, it's going to be a blast and ever been out there before, so that's going to be cool NFL.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, we are fully in football season now, so let's do this.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I just am happy that I subject you to my awful music taste in my eclectic podcast.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: So Thursday Friday It's really on you then Sunday.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_01]: We just listened to then I felt all the way back.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: We've also got our man Ryan Aber in the mixer Aber we're sorry that Only three people were approved but I guess the the positive news is that all three of us have been approved to do our normal jobs on Saturday which is You know
- 3:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's good at least so looking forward to seeing y'all's content up there.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_02]: I think the prayers of the condolences need to go the other way too because of the what you mentioned Carson get ready for a lot of EDM and a lot of soccer talk.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm willing for that.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: I got you.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: We will be fist pumping all our way to an arbor.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's been an interesting week guys.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to peel the curtain back a little bit.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: First off Friday night we didn't have a post game pod because I screwed up on the technical difficulty slash human end of things.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: So apologies to everyone.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: uh... it was simply unsavigable and in the worst part of that it was a persporements ever uh... he had so much knowledge he predicted the michigan like you don't know this but we look ahead the michigan he's like west of it's gonna kick their ass on Saturday night and that did happen to some degree
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: Who has been in the mix?
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: Who when I were panic texting each other as the whole college football world is watching Michigan on Saturday night, and that just big Besta.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: It was kind of incredible.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: If you look really closely on YouTube, head to who's YouTube page John Hoover Media.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: His clock is one second behind in his hotel room at Arbor because of everything that's been going down, but this.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's been weird, John.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to get to the next side of the time zones.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't know time zones work like that, but you'll have to know every day.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: We've also had some time to find, which is neither here nor that.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get to the Michigan side of it here a little bit later in the podcast, but just before we dive in,
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: This is a Michigan fan base that in a really weird way, John, is really comfortable these last four or five years with being kind of the college football villains and being a little bit us against the world.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: I know that if you look at some of the like, I don't know if we'd classify this as anecdotal or.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: like a quantitative measure, but like ticket prices have dropped, anecdotally I know a lot of Oklahoma fans who were like, hey, Michigan fans are kind of unloading this.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: What is Oklahoma walking into?
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: Brick Minibles and Cole Sullivan have talked about the maze out, and all that stuff.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: But it could be kind of a weird scene, especially if Oklahoma has a strong start on Saturday afternoon.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, the whole thing could be weird.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_03]: What is?
- 5:25[SPEAKER_03]: It's college football.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_03]: We've seen much, much.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_03]: Stranger things happen.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_03]: Then a limb thing wounded Michigan team suddenly rising up and taking down a racked up the homicide.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_03]: Anybody think that losing my pieces of my ear here?
- 5:40[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, anybody that thinks that that is not possible is, uh, is draining, uh, Michigan's a good football team.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_03]: Are they a great football team?
- 5:47[SPEAKER_03]: No.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_03]: Are they an elite offense?
- 5:49[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely not.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, do they have a highman contender at quarterback?
- 5:52[SPEAKER_03]: Not yet.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be a while before Bryce underwood reaches that.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_03]: But they're a good football team.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, talk to some guys yesterday and one while the comments was, hey, we're Michigan.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_03]: Another comment was we know who we are we have a lot of highly recruited players on this team you know high school players As much as anybody in the country and they're right.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_03]: They're talented players There's a transition that seems to be happening right now From well, I mean one of the guys yesterday's great road.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_03]: He said hey, I was recruited by hardball.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_03]: I came here to win Meanwhile, you know Kyle way the hands like walking you know right above right on stairs just above our heads as he will say in that so
- 6:31[SPEAKER_03]: There's a little bit of a disconnect I think between yes the new coaching staff and the players but it would not surprise me.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_03]: When I make, when we made our picks earlier in the week, I was like, oh, Lee, could this be a like a trap game?
- 6:44[SPEAKER_03]: Seriously, could this be a trap it to local homeless reportedly holding guys out of this game looking ahead to Georgia.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_03]: So just, I mean, it's a crazy, it's a crazy non-conference marquee matchup that we've been looking forward to.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_03]: Who the hell knows what could happen?
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be wild.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: I just have to ask this.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_01]: Did any of the Michigan guys say that that was Western Michigan Super Bowl?
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: Because we're Oklahoma.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: We came here to win championships and everybody gets our best shot.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone gets our best shot.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: We get everybody's best shot.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: That sounds like late-stage stupes candidly and not before Lincoln came in and helped him revamp the offense.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: You mentioned some of the injury stuff at the top, Hove and Carson.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's been a point of conversation all throughout the week.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_01]: Hove had the report on days around together.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was Tuesday morning that
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: Jake Bicleau and Ryan Fogier both back in the mix in Mondays practice going as close to full speed as the Monday practice structure allows the flip side of that a guy that only played 17 snaps against the minors was Michael Fassu see if you go back and watch those 17 snaps not much usage of the right arm stemming from a shoulder issue which was banged up earlier in fall camp it certainly seems like the plan as of
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: 11.45 a.m. Central time on Wednesday, Carson is to have the suci, not go.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: He might be out for a couple.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_01]: We've tried to get him ready for Georgia, Foget, left tackle, Jake Mikela at Center.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: This is a great plan on paper.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: How do you think it's going to come together, Carson, especially considering that again, these are paid management injuries and what might feel great Tuesday night at practice might be different Saturday morning in the big house.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, there's no perfect scenario in this with Vassucy likely being out against the Wolverines, but that what you just said is probably the best option.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: Utilizing guys like Mike Ello and Fogia assuming they're both good to go.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: We saw a little bit of Peyton Joseph against the use app and he was hit or miss had some good reps, had some not so good reps.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not sure you feel comfortable having him as a starter.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's probably safe to move Fogia someone that now we've seen him be able to play all three positions,
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: You really feel comfortable with him or wherever you put on my club you see was great at center last year He's good to go.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean it's risky.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean you never know if one of those guys that might be coming back If they re aggravate something that could be potentially disastrous going further into the season when Georgia Texas the full SEC slate gets here But as far as what they can do, I think that is the most practical option for them
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: And Ryan, this is not a situation where if the sushi doesn't go on Saturday, Oklahoma's looking at it and going, it's just Michigan.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's been a pretty clear through line, whether we talk to Kip Lewis, Peyton Bowen, Benarbuckle, Brett Venables.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think that I don't think Brett wanted to say this, but I think that he might have wanted to say this that how many times did like Kansas State lay a stinker in the non-conference and turn around and give Oklahoma all they could handle.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: You think back to the two laying a couple of years ago, then they turn around and run all over Brent and his first seat.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_01]: Brits said it.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's Michigan and we've emphasized Michigan and Georgia and Texas in the front half of this schedule.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: One awful performance, but one performance is not going to suddenly change how Oklahoma views this thing on Saturday.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, across the board, like you mentioned, they just talked about not taking Michigan lightly, not that I don't think anybody thought they would, but
- 10:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's natural after a game like that.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_02]: But we've seen plenty of really good teams struggle in their opener and then bounce back fairly quickly.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm not saying that Michigan will do that.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, underwoods got to be a whole lot better for them.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_02]: He really struggled and that offense just never could quite take off against Western Michigan outside of the one play with one second left that everybody's been talking about.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma isn't going to go into this just just thinking that they're going to roll over there.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_02]: I think, you know, obviously they'd like to have a full compliment on the offensive line, but hey, if you're trading two for one, as good as Michael for Susie is, and then you'd probably rather have Michaela and foj, available.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_02]: especially with fogey's versatility like Carson said he's played everywhere at this point and they need that kind of performance and need a strong performance for him last year.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_02]: This game was Michael Fassouzi's coming out party.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: This will give some other offensive lineman a chance to really break out and prove just how much better they are from last year's team.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_03]: I know I'm over-analyzed with this, but you guys know the whole thing about your season opener.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_03]: You don't show too much on film, that kind of thing.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_03]: You think that might be something worth not that they're trying to trap them or laying in weight or anything like that, but I think that's one of the factors that play is that this they probably spent the entire off season working on Oklahoma.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_03]: They probably spent most of the training camp working on Oklahoma.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_03]: They probably spent Central Western Michigan week working on Oklahoma.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_03]: So they get to Central Western Michigan, keeps going coming out of me like the Western Michigan.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_03]: And suddenly, Western Michigan's got other ideas.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_03]: This is last year Mac Champion, the favorite to win the Mac this year.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_03]: That's a different animal than what Oklahoma played, which is a really poor U-10 team.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't think there's any doubt about that, like you said, who it's not like Michigan's throwing out the whole playbook against Western Michigan, and you can't just add stuff in on the fly late in that game, they were still pretty vanilla.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_02]: The good thing for Oklahoma is that Kyle Winningham's track record is long, they've got plenty to look at on what he and his offensive staff in particular.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_02]: will do and can do, but certainly Michigan's a better team than what we saw on Saturday.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: So it makes, I think, some of these big non-conference games, especially a week two as most of a week one.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_01]: So, maybe that difficult but interesting is parsing through from week one.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: What was actual red flags versus what was week one rust paired with vanilla schemes, seems like that.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: On the Oklahoma side of things, I don't know if any of us are actually putting up a legitimate red flag about some of the early tackling things or things like that defensively, break them was called it sloppy.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: We talked to Kip and Kosov and Peyton Bow and everyone acknowledged that while it needs to be better,
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's also week one things like that where you look at the Michigan offensive line and the fact that Ryan you talked about they had a big track record you taught loves using extra offensive linemen screw 12 first out 13% they just say let's just put another big house out there Michigan did that against Western Michigan and it doesn't matter if you are vanilla or not.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: They struggled to get any kind of movement at the point of attack, and while there might have been some over pursuing and things like that, the first half that PJ had, what we know Taylor wine is, a David Stone and Jane Jackson kind of ready to be unleashed.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's where it gets really really interesting and it leads into I think one of the big storylines of the week.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: Britt Venables, we talked about this a year ago.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: Britt Venables very, very good when game planning against freshman quarterbacks, especially Britt Venables, pretty darn good game planning, you can see in a guy the second time around.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: And while things are different as far as the scheme goes, I'm really, really curious John of you go back to Monday, you on the Ann Arbor side of things, Kyle Whittingham.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't exactly a ring endorsement at least from reading it on our side of things as far as he's our quarterback for now, nothing set in concrete.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: This is me reading into it from afar John.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of people just interacting on radio stuff like that had had the same reaction.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: Kyle Williams rocking up going it's Larry else's money and it's day port noise money.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't buy price underwood to come and be by quarterback.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: He's great.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: He's not is that kind of the the vibe that you got it.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: And what does that do for a young quarterback with a shaky start that's looking to shake all that off and play a lot better in a massive game.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he's their quarterback.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_03]: He is I mean, they spent nearly three plus million dollars a year on this kid.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_03]: not kind of wedding hands money for to be sure, but he's their best chance to win, and because he's so athletic.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_03]: He, I think he is going to probably need better coaching, maybe more, more attention to his, the flaws in his game, because he's still so young, he's still so green.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_03]: We saw it last year, if they went eight and four.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_03]: He, you know, he threw 11 touchdowns and nine their exceptions.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_03]: You know, that's not, that's that's like
- 15:50[SPEAKER_03]: kid needs a lot of coaching, kid needs a lot of attention to his game and he'll get that and it'll continue to come.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_03]: His backup is a true freshman, you know, another local kid, another Michigan kid.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_03]: So they're not going to go in that direction, but yeah, you could hear it in his voice, Kyle wedding him when he said, he's our quarterback right now.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you have to throw that last part in there then, right now.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_03]: He said at some point, and he got like six or seven questions about rice underwood in that press conference, 20 minute press conference, and one of them was how much leash, how much rope do you give it, how much leash does he get, you know, does he continue to throw in completions or make the wrong reads, or, you know, scramble around too long, hold on to the football.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_03]: at what point do you fall in and he was he was like yeah at some point you have to produce you give the kid a lot of runway but at some point if you're the quarterback you've got to produce for your office I love that that sentiment from the head coach instead of saying these are quarterback next question he actually said that some point kids gonna have to produce
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be, I think, just so in training, see how they handle this Carson, because I think a year ago, especially early on, there was such a distinct difference if you watched Michigan in the games that Sean Moore was coaching versus the games where he was suspended, and you'd get to this very conservative game plan against Oklahoma, and it gets lesser competition, but kind of let them open it up a little bit more.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: It seemed like the general vibe out of an arbor this off season was going to be we're going to empower him more now that's probably going to be with his feet a little bit more that that maybe exactly his arm
- 17:30[SPEAKER_01]: With that kind of in mind, and you'd expect both prices underwood and geometry or to run a lot more this weekend, how could have they ramp up was EJ Colson, the UTEP Corvette, because they're different builds, right?
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: Right, so it was a massive dude, EJ, not the biggest guy, but he was slippery, there was some misdirection.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_01]: If you're worried about early season jitter stuff like that, it almost seems like that was a great,
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: Wake it calls probably putting it too strong, but a great test run for Oklahoma's defense when it comes to tracking down a quarterback that wants to be mobile.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: No, 100% it definitely is.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you'll look at that UTF team.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: And yes, bad team might not win two games this year.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_00]: Each of Colson's a former four star crew, very mobile.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we saw what he could do in that game.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_00]: And that's where I felt like the defense looked to the worst, defending the quarterback runs between both Colson and his backup who came later in the game.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: So that is a good test for a guy like Bryce Underwood.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, the struggle is passing the ball have been evident.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lot of people myself included expected him to put up bigger numbers against Western Michigan.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: If you would have told me you finished with 170 yards against Oklahoma, I'd believe you, but when you're playing a Mac team, even one that won the league last year, you expect a former five star number one recruit to put up much bigger numbers than that.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: So I really do think the biggest thing is to contain Bryce Underwood because we know even the struggles he's had the athlete that he is to whoops point he can run he can do a lot of things with his legs so containing him's huge and I mean I think Colson was definitely a warm-up for playing Underwood and likewise this is a warm-up for OU facing Trinidad Chamblitz, our shamanning, Gunnar Stox and Marcel Reed, named your dual threat quarterback in this league there are a lot of guys that can use their legs even
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: Even if they're not true dual threat, so I think getting back to back dual threats early in the year can do nothing but help this defense improve in that area.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_01]: something else that Brickman was highlighted Ryan was when asked up right under what he he talked about he's a guy and I think it's a place to every quarterback in general, but maybe specifically by someone when he gets into rhythm, you can see what it looks like and he talked about like that opening drive, great rhythm early.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: They sit down the field now you've been working on that drive for two weeks probably as far as that goes.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_01]: We all know once you get off the script, that's when the game really starts, but good news.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: Threat Venables specializes in throwing weird things in, getting guys uncomfortable.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_01]: And it looks like between the first half we saw from PJ, like we mentioned, getting Danny a Koi A back in the mix, Taylor Wine feels like this is where they let him loose and get after it.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_01]: If it gets into a spot where you're matching wits with brick venables and, you know, price-underword in the Michigan apparatus there, and no disrespect to you on the Michigan side of things, but brick venables has done this for three decades, and we know what that looks like.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely, because as much as we talked about, just a second ago, Michigan being fairly vanilla on offense and not, you know, showing too much for this game, Oklahoma certainly did a lot of the same thing.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: They're attack against CJ Colson is not gonna look like they're attack against Bryce Underwood, especially, you know, they're different styles.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: A quarterbacks obviously different athletes around him, but, you know, we saw a lot of mistackles
- 20:53[SPEAKER_02]: According to pro football focus they do have to clean that up, but you know David Stone really struggled, I think who was talking to us about it during the game, you could just see he felt a little bit slow.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_02]: That interior offensive line wasn't incredibly
- 21:11[SPEAKER_02]: You know, didn't disrupt things a lot, and then the defensive ends are going to be, well, PJ played great, I thought.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_02]: But Taylor wine is going to be much more disruptive, moving forward than he was against you, tip.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_02]: And I think there's, you know, several reasons for that, but I think it goes back to, hey, you got to trust Brent Venables, the defensive game plan,
- 21:38[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to say 100% but pretty close to 100% is going to give them a chance to be in this game and when it's just a matter of them will they be able to execute it with their players and I thought we solved some good signs from some backup guys.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_02]: And the guys who struggled, I think, are guys that like Kip Lewis and David Stone are guys that you, we've seen produce in big time ways.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't think you're too worried about that.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think a really comfortable spot.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the guys I thought were really crisp.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I wasn't sitting here going, hey, they need to knock off some of that weekland rest.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_01]: Guys like Reggie Powers looked great.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: Colesol then looked great.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that the three fourths of the secondary that was really, really experienced, Cortland and Eli Bowen, Peyton Bowen.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_01]: I thought all of those guys looked just like,
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: a continuation of the last we saw the year ago and but I'll ask you I think that he might have been one that was pretty amped up on that first time he got better as things went on so when you're looking at this michigan offence and going hey jjbcannon that that's absolutely a dude
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: But both Portland and Eli have seen a ton of dudes over these last two years in the SEC.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's a challenge, yes, all those guys are different.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: But it's not like this, oh my goodness, what are you going to do when you've been through kind of the gauntlet that they have.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: And then another bit of it again is.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: It was a very, very tough day from Michigan's one-two punch in the backfield.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_01]: They carried the ball at 16 times for 59 yards against Western Michigan in a game that this wasn't a game-state situation, who it wasn't like, hey, Michigan got down and they had to throw out of things or things like that.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_01]: They just flat out could not get pushed.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_01]: It reminded me a lot of
- 23:32[SPEAKER_01]: going back a couple years to the Temple Game and Norman, the Jackson Arnold year where it's like, hey, now the score was a lot different.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: That was due to turnover, so things like that.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: But I look over and go, that rushing attack where we were sitting here going, guys might not be healthy, but there are red flags all over the place.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: I was getting that kind of vibe as I watched Michigan from my couch on Saturday night.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I think that's fair.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_03]: The, the, the, the, the, the, the,
- 23:57[SPEAKER_03]: Performance in the loss, sorry, they won, they won the game, apparently I've told them I already won the game, but that performance by Michigan is strictly on Michigan, having said that and I've backed out a hundred percent Western Michigan is an older
- 24:15[SPEAKER_03]: more experienced team, they're big, you know, they're not, they're not like a SMFCF team coming in here with limited scholarships and 230 pound defensive ends.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_03]: It's a big, big squad.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_03]: So they're legit, like I said, match champ type, type squad.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_03]: So give credit to Western Michigan as, you know, Kyle Wittigham and the players have done, but talking to, you know, handful of players yesterday.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_03]: we overlooked them is the overriding sentiment.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_03]: We didn't play to our standard.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_03]: We weren't physical enough.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_03]: One guy said, the safety rod more.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_03]: We were soft.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_03]: And the running back, Marshall, he came out and said, we've never been soft like that.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_03]: So they're lining themselves for what happened rightly so when you're up when you're 27 and that point
- 25:10[SPEAKER_03]: a hail Mary back on the board with one second to escape that soccer.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's entirely on Michigan.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_01]: It leads us into what I think is going to be Carson, the most important stretch of the game on Saturday, especially for Oklahoma's offense.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I know that we're about to get into Captain obvious territory.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_01]: Breaking news, every team in the country would like a fast start in every game, I get it.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_01]: But this is where it becomes really important, Carson.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_01]: You were on the field of year ago in Columbia.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_01]: Different situations, but that was a South Carolina crowd.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: that we were curious what this thing was going to look like, and it's not the big house, but they were allowed.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_01]: They were up for it.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma has their way on the first drive off.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: Fensively, South Carolina comes down.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: They hit the big play.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to change your enforcing what down, but then stall it on the goal line fourth down.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: And immediately,
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: fire the offensive coordinator chance.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: There's the grumblings.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: Ouse offense goes back down the field.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_01]: I thought the most important thing about that performance was Ouse offense did no harm in the first quarter.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_01]: This Saturday, I don't think Oklahoma's offense has to go up and score two touchdowns in a field goal in their first three possessions.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: Pick up a couple first downs, do not turn the ball over, and I think that Michigan's gonna come out with this juice and this energy, because it's gonna be a pack crowd.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna be their maze-out game, and they're gonna wanna prove something wrong.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_01]: This is where Brent Minimal's talked about going on the road a year ago, different team, but they learned how to ride the wave of momentum in a motion, and I think that's gonna be huge in the first couple of drives on both sides of the ball.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_00]: more than a quick start I think clean start to your point is the most important thing of boy the silly turnovers just get a compose start to the game whether that means you score 20 points in the first quarter or only about 10 I mean I think that's still a recipe of success assume there's no that in our options no phone bowls anything like that I mean we know that
- 27:01[SPEAKER_00]: Despite the result last week for Michigan, that defense can still play.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: They still have a lot of athletes.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_00]: They're a well-coached unit.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: They have a lot of talent there.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, I'm not personally expecting, even if OU wins the game comfortably, I'm not expecting this to be a 40 to 30 gamer or anything like that.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be somewhat oh scoring.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_00]: Michigan's defense is going to look better, stopping the run this week.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I did that that I think they did last week.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_00]: But more than anything, it really is avoiding the costly penalties, turnovers, things of that nature, because on paper, oh, you should win this game, they have the talent.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to give any extra reasons for the big house to be jumping, it's going to be jumping early in the game, maze it out like they talked about.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_00]: 11 a.m. big new and kick off new and their time excuse me.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but it's going to be a packed house.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_00]: And like we saw little Williams Bryce, even though it never got lost sighted until late in the game, that crowd to your point got really just.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_00]: kind of disinterested, a lot of fire videos.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: See, I'm not sure that we get fire winning ham chance, but maybe a binge-brice, something along those lines, getting the crowd out of it.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's a big part too.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: So that's that's one piece of it and then just avoiding the big miscuse.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_03]: Well, 14 p.m. local kickoff time, Carson, by the way.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_03]: Fire, fire, winning hand doesn't roll
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: That could make it happen.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: The other thing too is it's not just a freshman and everyone's back at quarterbacks.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: They're favorite quarterback, but it's a long lineage of football up in Michigan.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: That's on the bench too.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: It would be like Baker may feel junior being on the bench in Norman and the starting quarterback stronger a little bit as far as that goes.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I do think that is an extra dynamic to throw in there.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_01]: Ryan, it feels like this is really where
- 28:49[SPEAKER_01]: the rubber is going to meet the road or start to at least for all of what we've talked about with John material all off season and that opener I thought I like him did to it didn't look like material broke a sweat didn't look like he needed to get out a second gear he was just calm cool collected operated the offense they had a ton of 12 13 personnel even the 14
- 29:10[SPEAKER_01]: This is still where if we come back in next Monday night, we're having the same conversation with John, where he's talking about the plays that he wants back is, oh, I missed a hitch on the goal line or I missed this or that.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_01]: But it's not turnovers.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's just plays he wish he had.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: Instead, he pulled it and got back to the line and screwed my things with that.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's a really good formula for Oklahoma because that probably means that what we saw or heard about this off season is translating against a good defense on a Saturday.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you know, obviously a defense like Michigan's and Georgia and Texas and on and on are going to punish you more for those kind of mistakes.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_02]: But if he's able to avoid turnovers, you know, for the most part, they're going to happen.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_02]: But certainly cut down that number significantly from what they were a year ago, they're going to be a pretty good shape.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_02]: I said this all off season.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_02]: I said this all preseason camp.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_02]: You probably
- 30:09[SPEAKER_02]: Jon material doesn't have to be Baker Mayfield doesn't have to be Jalen Hertz doesn't have to be Kyler Murray for them to be really, really good offensively because
- 30:20[SPEAKER_02]: of everything around him.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_02]: If those areas are better, the tight ends were, you know, particularly impressive last week, we'll see what kind of personnel groupings I don't think we'll see as much, you know, 12, 13, 14, although I think you could see it in flashes against Michigan and beyond.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_02]: And John material doesn't have to be great, but yeah, if we're talking about just a couple plays that he wants back and they're not turnovers, then they are in really good shape.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_02]: I want to go back to something who said earlier, though, I think if if
- 30:56[SPEAKER_02]: This thing crumbles and Michigan fans start, you know, the Chuck Chuck type of things, Barry Barry, even at one point, I think kick Kyle to the curb has, you know, some nice alliteration to it.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_02]: That's pretty good.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_02]: But I also really like Kyle Wittingham and think that he's going to be successful there.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_02]: Eventually, it's just a big culture shock going from hardball.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_02]: I know Sharon Moore was there, but it's hardball's culture to Kyle Wittingham's is much different.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_03]: Well, having been here now for Sunday Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, going on four days.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_03]: I told my wife to last night that I think this might be the most in terms of maybe highest percentage or saturation we call it in the media industry.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_03]: This might be the college town of all the college towns that have been to where the highest percentage of residents, government signs that are on light posts, you know, thanks scrolling
- 32:10[SPEAKER_03]: This might be the highest percentage, another way, a good way of saying psycho fans of the fan base that is just all in on its team.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_03]: As many people are here, as big as this community is.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_03]: I think this might be like the number I've been to Columbus, Ohio, and I started throwing out other air, you know, Tuscaloosubans.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe Fayetteville Arkansas, but doesn't have the population.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_03]: That's what I was saying.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_03]: You know, Fayetteville's all in on the hogs.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_03]: And, but this is like, this is way bigger.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_03]: Just in terms of the town itself is smaller, but there's, you know, Detroit's 30 miles away, 40 miles away, whatever it is.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_03]: And there's just so many people here who are all in, I mean, they don't, there was a sign in the, but Shenbeckward Hall.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_03]: No red and no green beyond this point.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_03]: and no photos and no media beyond this point.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_03]: That's just where the team lives.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_03]: They got stuff like that all over this town.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_03]: They see you wearing red.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_03]: They come and talk to you about it.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_03]: It's amazing.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_03]: So the passionate fan base, in a good way, psycho fans love college football fans that are that passionate.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, no, I'm with you.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_03]: This is, let's put fable up there.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_03]: Um, anybody else got in the other communities that are just all in, oh, this, think about all this history.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_03]: They've sucked for a long time and they still get dressed every Saturday.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_03]: Ridiculous.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I threw a knock spell.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_00]: I threw a knock spell into that mix.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, talk about an unhinged group of fans.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, very passionate though.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: Knoxville is all in on the ball.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of similarly, I haven't obviously been up to Ann Arbery yet.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: I've not been to Fayette, Billy, but Tennessee's
- 33:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think, you know, having been to all of these places, having been to a game at Michigan, but have been to plenty of games at Arkansas and won at Tennessee.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_02]: I think I would put Fayetteville and Michigan a little bit ahead of Tennessee, but Tennessee's got the best, the biggest percentage of crazy to it.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_02]: Michigan fans are crazy in a way, but not like super over the top, like Tennessee and Arkansas, but Tennessee's had the success at a different level that Arkansas has had.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_02]: So there's just something there, the right mix of all of that that makes it a unique environment.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_03]: But Michigan has won a thousand and twenty two games more than they're the only program in history to win a thousand
- 34:53[SPEAKER_03]: that kind of success.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_03]: It's awesome.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_01]: I do think we are missing one key character in this mix.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: And it is the cation seasoning that is missing from all of this delusian estate tigers.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_01]: We will get to them here in a little bit.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's only one school that currently has a vote on the docket to get booted from the south eastern conference.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_01]: You mean the newest member of the Mac?
- 35:18[SPEAKER_01]: So what was her mission though the sun though is where it unless you would go it would be fun But lane it would be fun about with lane.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think that we need to toss it in there.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_01]: Although we didn't get the true What we're gonna get on Saturday?
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: What old cool machining on Saturday is a lot different than
- 35:34[SPEAKER_01]: the trip that who of course and I took to death valley a couple years ago because that was a group that was it was the back in like if this thing goes sideways this year for Michigan you might see what happened in death valley which is people are showing up but the second whether they're winning or losing they're showing up to yell at Brian Kelly type situation it's not quite to that stage yet I think it'll be much more like the Tennessee crowd which it's certainly good who's bringing it all the way back to a guy like John material that
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: new offensive, you know, bells and whistles absolutely, but someone that's talked about like every year's different, everything's different, but it was an acclamation period to go not just on the stage and the pressure that is to play at Oklahoma, but to go play in Knoxville and have that kind of atmosphere paired with an SEC defense, to go to Bryant Dining and have that atmosphere plus an SEC defense, Michigan's not in the SEC, but I think that this is a defense that would fit
- 36:33[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty comfortably in the SEC as well as the atmosphere and all that and this I think is it's going to come back to any warning flags of what we saw a year ago, which I know it's hard to parse what was hand injury, what wasn't, but John, I'm coming in.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: three-intercepts against Illinois State, three-intercepts against Michigan, those exceptions happen kind of similar ways.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't see any throws that were close to that from material, and that was certainly, I think more than anything, probably the best sign from the opener for Oklahoma's offense.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he didn't put the ball in danger, that's for sure, but Michigan changes that equation.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_03]: Michigan's got
- 37:12[SPEAKER_03]: All big 10 first team all big 10 defensive backs first team all big 10 defensive ends the kid that the kid that he brought within that The Kai winning hand brought within from Utah is 14 all big all big 10 defensive end coming off of an Achilles injury But he's pretty spectacular So that changes the equation.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_03]: I think for for material the thing about
- 37:38[SPEAKER_03]: with material is and again the guys that were talking about yesterday he's the quarterback so he gets a lot of run you know with one guy with the defensive end nickel said he's the guy we have to stop he's the one that makes them go uh he's not getting away from me you know he was saying uh how does his uh performances the dual threat quarterback change what you do is it doesn't change at all he's not getting away from me so
- 38:03[SPEAKER_03]: they've got in their mind right now that everything goes through material and it does for the Pope from most part but material we saw it last week and I know as you tap tap the brakes it was you tap but we saw as they ascertaining and running down the field we saw they can place in the passkin we saw trial Harris breaking free we saw the tight ends fears especially getting free down down this field that's going to be something those guys didn't pass again
- 38:30[SPEAKER_03]: That's going to be something that I think material is going to continue to exploit or at least try to exploit.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_03]: And then when Oklahoma goes to that either the run games that we saw last week with Lloyd Avan.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_03]: Or they go to, if, when they have to not, not 19 times, hopefully.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_03]: But QB power, that's what I think is going to really test where Oklahoma is offensively.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_03]: this time in the big house.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_03]: If they're able to do that, I think if they're able to run the football control the clock, I think that's what that's when Oklahoma fans and my opinion can get excited about this team.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_03]: If they can't run the football, I'm saying, and then we're a couple of plays last week, guys.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_03]: Short yards, goal line stuff.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_03]: They're running, supposed to be a hole there, there's no hole, and they don't gain anything.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_03]: So if that happens repeatedly,
- 39:28[SPEAKER_03]: If they're able to get those short yardage runs, I think that's right news for Oklahoma for the future.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_01]: And it opens up something that we just did.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_01]: There've been many elements missing from the local offensive last couple years, but certainly last year Carson, it felt like they were explosive at points, but it was usually because of a kitchen run by satinia or a coverage bus that geometry did a good job of finding satinia.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_01]: I thought
- 39:51[SPEAKER_01]: You have one element of that, that little just like swing pass essentially that they've produced a chain that he kind of got to the next level, but this a chain you touched down, the trial Harris touched down, the Rocky Bears touched down, aided by obviously a great hurdle by Rocky Bears.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think all of that came from
- 40:07[SPEAKER_01]: you tap truly having to respect the person I agree with the tight ends and having to leave guys and one on one over the middle of the field.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where I think Oklahoma can get really, really dangerous.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_01]: If you see the geometry that was able to throw those guys open and make sure that that wasn't a, hey, Trell was out there, but it was down at the five because didn't hit him and strive.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_01]: You was able to make those open receivers into touchdown catches with the perfect throw.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, obviously, I think you have to take into account that UTEP is far and away the worst defense that OU will play this year.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_00]: No questions asked.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_00]: That said, I agree with you.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_00]: I think the tight ends are huge and every facet of this offense, getting void of bond going, getting Xavier Robinson, whoever might be getting the most carries going forward, I think they're gonna help in those ways.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you saw the downfield shots, two a guy like Rocky Bears, Hayden Hanson had that really nice catch over the middle in the first half.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_00]: They just have more weapons that materials disposal.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's huge for his development.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_00]: His decision-making's really there was only one throw that I thought he really wanted that back.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_00]: That was to Elijah Thomas in the first half.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_00]: Other than that, I thought he played a really clean game.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_00]: Took what the coverage was giving him, which admittedly was a lot.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_00]: The touchdowns to Harris, Tania, white open beers.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_00]: Her old hurled a guy into the end, so I'm about to decide that he was wide open.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, I do think having so many different bigger options that tight in is going to open up a lot of things for Isaiah, Satan, the intro, Harris, whoever else make it involved like a Parker living stone, Elijah Thomas, whoever it may be.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_00]: So even though it was huge step, I think there was a lot of encouraging that goes into week two against Michigan.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the thing that a lot of people going to circle me included Ryan is
- 41:51[SPEAKER_01]: Michigan did not give up a touchdown.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_01]: So that is a factual statement.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_01]: They also gave up a 20 play nearly 14 minute drive, which was just nickel and diamond death by a thousand cuts.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever you want to label it in the running game.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_02]: Army versus OU a few years ago.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's what I thought too.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_01]: And that's a good one.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_01]: right side of it is no Kyler Murray it seems at least at this stage in his career one season plus one game.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: You look at it it's going to be Lloyd of Monten's going to be Xavier Robinson.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to get the totality of the load of the runny game.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_01]: I know that Britman will said that they're going to try and get tore by like traveling.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't know if this is the game to unwrap a guy that's had hamstring troubles maybe next week, but you look at it and as much as we talk about the injuries upfront Ryan and as much as we talk about
- 42:43[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, it wasn't like this 300 yard performance, but it felt like it was the sweet zone of the Goldilock zone of I'm not panicked by what the offensive line put out there.
- 42:54[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like there's room for improvement that is reasonable room for improvement.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_01]: I guess that just spoils down to this.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_01]: the one-two-point-to-void-of-art and zamor-absent, do you think that those guys are gonna be enough to open things up, obviously parent-in-jomit here's legs, to have the success Oklahoma wants to have, to maybe slow things down, but be more clinical when it comes to exposing the moments that they do get.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think so, I think it's going to be really interesting to see how this offensive line comes together, especially opening up holes against a much better defensive front than they saw the week ago.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_02]: I think who ran down some of the guys that they've got up there, they are really good up there.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_02]: But I think what we saw last week was better than what we saw in the offensive line a year ago was it perfect?
- 43:44[SPEAKER_02]: know was it great also know but uh i think you saw some steps in the right direction because i mean you just look at the numbers you know on paper a lot of those numbers from like say last year's Illinois State Game were better you take those but
- 44:05[SPEAKER_02]: with the games that we we saw in both instances I think you certainly would rather have a performance like oh you had the other night versus what we saw a year ago in that situation where they were playing a team that they were you know had outmatched in every every single way although again in Illinois State's probably better than UTEP is better than UTEP but
- 44:28[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think it was a good step to get guys like know a best, you know, a bigger look at Heath Osida who's a luxury for them.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's the kind of player who typically transfers away and they were able to hold onto him.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to be invaluable here over these first few weeks as they have navigated those injuries up there.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_02]: But we're going to find out a lot more about how much better this group is this week than we did last week, I think.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that maybe the most exciting thing in an area for improvement that will come I think is the year moves on as John, how many years have we had the circular conversations about in college football right now, you live and die by the RPO game and all that stuff.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where Brent Venables talking after the UTEP game about, hey,
- 45:27[SPEAKER_01]: going to the gun had its benefits and not that it's just irrelevant.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, nothing of that sort, but defense is a kind of caught up and so going back under said, I think that, you know, John, but tears talked about that.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_01]: He feels like that he gets a better look at things.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_01]: I just think for this offensive line.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: it's a lot simpler of we know this plays a naked boot so if John's going to throw the ball we need to stay in that sweet zone of not being an eligible band down feel but for the most part we know John material is going to turn to his right hand the ball to Louis to Vaughn and Louis to Vaughn wants to get really skinny in the B gap or uh bounce this thing outside I think that that
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: simplification and letting those guys fire up the football is something that it's been a long time to saw that kind of vibe and that energy and that game plan in norm.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you know, I know you guys were watching college football and right, and I know you were covering back then, but what went when 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 started happening and everybody was setting some kind of passing record every week or scoring
- 46:37[SPEAKER_03]: during the 2008 season.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_03]: We're all sitting there going, is this what the heck is going on here?
- 46:43[SPEAKER_03]: College football, the offense took off in the left, the defense.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_03]: College football always comes around, always comes back to the center, and here we are, you know, a half generation later, and we've got, you know, games like 13 to 12, you know.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_03]: We've got the, I predict this one's gonna be 20 to 17.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_03]: So, low scoring games, yeah, the defense has caught up,
- 47:06[SPEAKER_03]: are right now better, I think, in general and you can go back and look at recruiting and development and where are all the quarterbacks and all that stuff.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_03]: I think defenses are better, athletically, more prepared, better coached than offences, just in general sense.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_03]: Speaking about where college football was, where it is now.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_03]: But you're right, Ryan.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_03]: I said, I've been saying for years that RPO is the vein of young quarterback's existence.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_03]: They don't need to be standing there with the football reading something that they think they understand.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_03]: And meanwhile, the defensive coordinator is over here pulling these strings like this, like a little puppet master, right?
- 47:47[SPEAKER_03]: And they eventually, that's what happened.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_03]: They got because the coordinates were able to influence quarterback to see things
- 47:56[SPEAKER_03]: and make mistakes.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_03]: And coaches are getting smart, offensive coaches are getting smart, they're taking the option away, they're taking the, okay, if you see this, I want you to do this, if you see that, I want you to do that.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_03]: There's still, they still do it, but it's not saturated, like everybody's trying it now, because defensive they're just too smart, they've taken that away, and I think it's great, Lloyd Avant, the way he ran last week, the size of, you know, hit that hole if it's not there, hit it anyway,
- 48:23[SPEAKER_03]: You know, maybe somebody will get knocked out, maybe somebody will get pushed out of the way, maybe somebody will have a slippery glove and they can't grab your jersey that time.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_03]: Go ahead and hit it.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_03]: That's where he's supposed to be.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_03]: Hit it.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_03]: And he does that.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_03]: He's really talented.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_03]: He's one of those running backs.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_03]: Reminds me, a little bit of Eric Gray.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes Eric Gray would dance around a little bit too much or try to make one too many moves.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_03]: But when Eric Gray had the football under his arm, he was headed to a spot on the field.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_03]: designated area.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_03]: And that's why he, you know, looked at his yards per carry because he was able to get in there and, you know, make people miss or, you know, get a block at the last second, whatever that was.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_03]: So, you're right, you're a, I agree a thousand percent of the RPO.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_03]: See, yeah, don't want any more of that.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: makes us go all the way back to, I know, of course, and I sit in the Tennessee post game.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_01]: And that was the one intersection that material through late, that's where Brett was talking about.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_01]: We just need to maybe not have that be in the call, so he very politely was signaling to his offensive coordinator.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, man, just turn around the hand the ball off.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_01]: There's no need to have to check in there at all.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think you're gonna see it.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, that check completely out.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think you're going to see a little bit more of that from what was offense this year in a really, really good way.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get on to other things in the World of Codsports Carson, we would be remiss.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_01]: So we didn't touch on special teams.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_01]: I always play a big role in these games.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_01]: We know this.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_01]: But you look at it.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_01]: Isaiah Sotania.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_01]: Finally, it's into the end zone.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: He had so many good pot returns a year ago.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_01]: Finally, it's the touchdown.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_01]: Tate Sandell, better start than last year.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_01]: So you didn't miss the field goal.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: I had something that Kempra was running out of Tuesday that Brittvin will talk about.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_01]: That one thing that's going to be key in their game plan is they kind of entered the Michigan game and you're going to not actually knowing what they had on special teams.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_01]: Like we hope this is going to go off for Tate Sandell.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_01]: It certainly changed how they game plan for games against Tennessee and against Alabama once they knew they had it.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's going to be
- 50:17[SPEAKER_01]: And valuable, especially early when we talk about going all the way back to, hey, if Britain will says a tough fourth and two decision on the plus 35 on the first drive of the game, I think he's going to be really comfortable saying, and let's just take the points play field position as opposed to given Michigan some momentum early.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it was huge for Tate Sandel to just get a couple through the uprights and no misses in game one.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, such a damper on what was another wise fantastic season in the college football playoff last year when he missed two against the crimson tide, but he looked good.
- 50:48[SPEAKER_00]: Also got to see some trace rudely amevins action in that game, so that was cool.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_00]: And this attain it like you said, it was kind of funny because I don't remember
- 50:56[SPEAKER_00]: If he scored or if he got really close last year to get still a noise state, but one was called back due to a penalty.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_00]: He broke off like a 60-yard return.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's funny that almost the exact same thing flashy return made a couple guy missed.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_00]: This time no penalty though, and this time he takes it the distance.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean
- 51:13[SPEAKER_00]: Having even just a couple of those in the season can be huge.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_00]: We know the speed that he has, he was fantastic in that department last year, even though he didn't score a touchdown.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's big.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_00]: The big things that I think I still want to see.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_00]: I want to see more kick returns this year.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_00]: We saw Centania returning the first one of the season, which is good to see.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_00]: And we got 24 yards on it, but
- 51:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think you dislike the possibility of having a speech or like Satania returning those again.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_00]: So that's going to be interesting and then puncture will, we saw, I think, two punts against you tap, which is a good thing.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to have to plunder a lot against you tap, but I kind of want to see more from Grayson Miller, see some good boots like we did throughout the year last year.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_00]: So you can feel even more confident about that.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: Had the football, that was the important thing.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think I panicked, I don't know if it made it's way to the live blogs.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I don't want to make any one nervous here.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_01]: But as we were every week before the game, if you guys are locked in on Twitter, that kind of thing, you know, that a bunch of the beat members we get together and do what we call the attendance chart basically.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_01]: And as I was in the binoculars looking down at the specialist, just like, hey, grace and millers there, hey, Liam Evans is there, stuff like that, just split second.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_01]: I happened to look down at grace and miller.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_01]: He dropped the pregame snap and I turned to Avery and I was like this is not good.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_01]: He caught the rest of them and then certainly the one in the game But I was like what what awful timing for him that I'm sure it was probably the only one in pregame But I was like, oh, this is not good, right?
- 52:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but I mean, you know, you hope it's a situation where you know
- 52:46[SPEAKER_02]: You hear guys who throw no hitters or at perfect games say, well, sometimes not always, but I didn't really feel like I had it in pregame warmups, maybe it was a situation like that for him, but I think Grayson Miller is a guy who can really have a big effect on this game.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_02]: This is sort of his breakout party last year.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_02]: We remember that Jacob Ulrich was hurt in this game.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_02]: Grace and Miller came in and sort of wally piped him and was the punner for the rest of the year.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_02]: He's been excellent again, not that you want to use him very often.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_02]: But if you can flip the field position once or twice in a game, that can make a world of difference, especially when you've got a defense like Oklahoma's.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, special teams have been something that's
- 53:32[SPEAKER_02]: been really emphasized here.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_02]: And I think, you know, you talk about these new players, that might be the area where they're going to have the biggest impact at least fairly quickly, because that's a lot just, hey, go out there and make a play versus having to learn Brent Vennables complex playbook, although Brent Vennables said, you know, week to week, it's not as hard,
- 53:55[SPEAKER_02]: as maybe you would think, but I think special teams is probably what got better the most with the addition of those four players this week.
- 54:06[SPEAKER_03]: Well, tell you guys this, being at the press conference on Monday here in Ann Arbor, God waiting for him is really impressed with Doug Deacon.
- 54:15[SPEAKER_03]: He said during his press conference, he was somebody asked him to ask special teams and he said,
- 54:20[SPEAKER_03]: They got the Groza Award winner.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_03]: They got the all SEC Punder, like he's looking like, that's not fair, and then he goes, and then he got a guy that goes 90 yards with a punch.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_03]: They got elite special teams.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_03]: He's very impressed by both of them and special teams there.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_03]: They're impactful in every face.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_03]: I'm with Carson and I want to see a kicker turn.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_03]: Like kicker turns.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_01]: They're fun.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_01]: It was the worst part of all of these suggestions.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, what if we just start the football game on the 25th?
- 54:47[SPEAKER_01]: I understand safety, but this is where pageantry Ryan comes in.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like there's nothing quite like a big game opening kickoff.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's just the best way to start a game for me.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_01]: That an opening tip or the putt drop is great, but there's nothing like having the entire stadium do
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: whatever tradition it is that they do for a kickoff, uh, having the rough necks go off, having the cannon and the cotton ball fire off.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, okay, we are in it and let's play.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's like pretty much, let's smash a bag when play some football or whatever.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you understood why say Lincoln Riley went away from returning mini kicks because those offenses were so dang good that the the the risk reward wasn't there.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_02]: Now it is a little bit more obviously the rules have changed like you mentioned, but I would love to see more kick returns for sure.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_02]: And we've seen that Isaiah Satania has the explosiveness to do it.
- 55:44[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we'll see, you know, Lloyd Avant there some as well.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_02]: That'll be interesting to see how effective he's able to be there.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_02]: But that would be a fun little wrinkle to finally see the kicker turn back in Norman because it's been a while since they did it fairly consistently.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see if a kick-off return for a touch-down makes its way to Ryan Aber's bold prediction.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_01]: You can read on the website Friday at 6pm Central, as well as all of our content guys.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_01]: We have doubled the content this week.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_01]: Everything that Carson Aber, myself, Brady, who's in the bunker, everything that we've been doing, our normal game week stuff.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: all there.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, Oklahoma suitors onside.com.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_01]: And you got double duty, everything that who's been getting into all of Kyle Whittingham's comments about Oklahoma, the players, all that stuff, the general vibes, Ronnie and Orber, who's got it there.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_01]: I can tell you that very proud of we are the only outlet that has both sides of this thing covered here.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just stuff that you can only find.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_01]: And it's all
- 56:44[SPEAKER_01]: all free it cost you no dollars to go to ocomissures onside.com and read everything from whom everything from us here on the Norman side.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_01]: And like we said, we'll blend it all together.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_01]: Plenty of content to the website.
- 56:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think Monday guys outside of the game day, not that, you know, and I think really cares about these metrics, but you know, who and I were big on counting stuff.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_01]: And we've had some Friday Saturday, you know, game days where it's like,
- 57:07[SPEAKER_01]: And we put 23 pieces of content on the website.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think Monday set a non-game day record for sooner side of the site as far as content on the site.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_01]: So you might have to scroll a little bit when you hit the football tab.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_01]: But we've got everything there as you get juiced for this bad boy.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: There's drama Elsa around the SEC, we'll get to that here in a second.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_01]: But before we fully move off of OU and Michigan, you've been up there, is there anything
- 57:33[SPEAKER_01]: non-football related of I know there's going to be a crimson convoy that will be taking over to Troy and Ann Arbor Friday night and into Saturday.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_01]: Have you read into anything that John, you're just like, I absolutely positively ringing endorsement.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_01]: I need you to stop by here if you're a sooner fan ahead of up to Ann Arbor.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_03]: Well, it's going to be hard because we'll talk to
- 58:01[SPEAKER_03]: But if you want a local restaurant, you've got to try Zingermans.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_03]: Zingermans, it is fantastic.
- 58:08[SPEAKER_03]: Local restaurant flavors all over the menu.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_03]: We had several items that we just kind of blew me away.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_03]: I got the chicken back in cheese.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_03]: They said it's their most popular dish.
- 58:18[SPEAKER_03]: I completely understand why it's unbelievable.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and make your way to the Shenbeck with Hall.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_03]: Outside, there's some statues and stuff like that.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_03]: You're kind of like Oklahoma's got.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_03]: It's a little more industrial looking, not maybe to the level of what when we went to Auburn a couple of years ago, or Ole Miss LSU was at last year, or year four, where, you know, we were looking around and everything's kind of spray painted and it's gray and there's bolts sticking out, you know, I told somebody yesterday, the best, the two prettiest stadiums in the
- 58:56[SPEAKER_03]: fight me.
- 58:57[SPEAKER_03]: They just are aesthetically pleasing.
- 59:00[SPEAKER_03]: Michigan's a little bit kind of on the, you know, SEC side of that where it's like they built something here and then they built something here and then added on there.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma's completely integrated into the rest of the architecture and the bricks around the campus.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_03]: Michigan.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_03]: Not so much, but their athletic area, their athletic department area is about eight times the size of Oklahoma's.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_03]: They've got everything, they've got a baseball field, they've got softball field, they've got ice arena, you know, for that.
- 59:29[SPEAKER_03]: can't be a nice hockey team that got just come down to the practice facility, the football stadium, come down to the campus, come down to the athletics area, take a look at the map and say what do you want to see because it's all strikingly huge and everything is blue and yellow.
- 59:47[SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, amazing, amazing blue.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_01]: It will be maze hopefully that the fans are in maze and not the team because it was uniform so terrible and it would be an abomination.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_03]: Remember, Zingermans, that's where you want to go.
- 59:58[SPEAKER_01]: Zingermans, the place to be a member.
- 1:00:00[SPEAKER_01]: I know that you've been not on a game day, but the vacances always struck me as very similar to both Newland and Notre Dame when it comes to
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a bowl, and it's a massive bowl, and it's a spectacular structure, but I think we're so used to, like Oklahoma obviously is decked.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_01]: A&M has a little bit, it's a deck, but it's kind of like a, it expands, kind of popped on top.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_01]: LSU's kind of similar out one of the in zones.
- 1:00:28[SPEAKER_01]: This is kind of like, you know, Nealon and Notre Dame where it's like, it is a bowl, everyone sits inside here, but the structure it makes for it being really, really impressive when you're standing
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_01]: around.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 1:00:42[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's much more like Notre Dame.
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_02]: You know, obviously there's there's some differences there, but Neil and Stadium is so different just because it's so enclosed that the sound just reverberates in there.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I remember the the first trip that owe you made there a few years ago.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_02]: Right, but going into overtime was the loudest that I'd ever experienced, which was louder than on the field at Texas A&M, when OU got beat by regimen kneels, a bunch down there, and in 2001, I think, right, but it's going to be a loud.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_02]: Was that?
- 1:01:23[SPEAKER_03]: I think it was little too.
- 1:01:24[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, too.
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_02]: I couldn't remember exactly.
- 1:01:28[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, oh, one was Nebraska where the Eric Crouch throwback game there, but yeah, I think.
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_02]: It's a very impressive stadium.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of people that noise is going to be insane, but I think having gone to Neil and Stadium in particular last year, also Tuscaloosa, I think the guys who were around that neck last year will be ready for it for sure, because it's not that kind of loud.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I've gone for it all last year on the road and winning in Tuscaloosa, winning in,
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_03]: Knoxville very impressive a very impressive feet to run especially to finish your season This we're either going to some crappy bowl game or we're gonna run this table and we're gonna get to play off They're performance last year in red November.
- 1:02:18[SPEAKER_03]: I guess we're calling it It's extremely impressive and you're right Ryan there's a lot of guys back on that team that I can't wait to get out there Stand at the 50 yard line and do this to the Michigan fans say come on get louder get louder They're they're gonna they thrive on that stuff.
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_03]: So that's gonna be exciting watch
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's been, uh, if the projections and what Oklahoma's game planning for, Jake Micla experienced that, the communication that you need, Eddie Parallel, we was in the lineup by the time they hit the back into that schedule, Ryan Fogez, well, a Marion Harris different as far as he didn't experience it, but he's been around the SEC, he knows what those atmospheres are like, even if it's sorry, but a little bit different to our friends in Fayetteville, whenever they rock in versus maybe an Oklahoma team that's fighting for a playoff spot.
- 1:03:06[SPEAKER_01]: uh... seems unfazed by anything except for the horde of cameras that we throw in his face after a game and every review of no investment he's unfazed and he gets in for the cameras like that's a lot of cameras like welcome welcome to the uh... welcome to the chaos that we bring in there uh... we certainly hope to take one more trip or at least many more trips over the years to death valley that's what's up on the docket on thursday as it pertains to the SEC and car side i feel like we're kind of going like
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_01]: Parallel play here between Oklahoma and LSU because Oklahoma, you know, Jim naggy was part of the crew that talked to us on Monday night and he talked about the three additional roster ads that Oklahoma made on top of Danny Sayley who we actually got to see on Friday night.
- 1:03:48[SPEAKER_01]: The crucial difference and I guess maybe now that the dust has said a little bit there is no longer a difference.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_01]: Jim Nagy goes out his way to talk about, we were in constant contact with the South Eastern Conference in CIA officials.
- 1:03:59[SPEAKER_01]: He talked about, you know, exploring CFL ties, potentially and then going, nope, that's not what we want there.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma doing it the right way.
- 1:04:07[SPEAKER_01]: LSU maybe got shamed and doing it the right way by virtue of a very least a potential probation vote on Thursday, which is kind of not even for SEC country.
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, it's uncharted territory, speaking of,
- 1:04:21[SPEAKER_00]: an athletic department that's been as successful as LSU has to these guys we might take a vote to see if they're not going to be league members anymore.
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's how serious the SEC is taking it and they should be taking it that seriously.
- 1:04:34[SPEAKER_00]: Do I think there's any chance that LSU is going to be banished from this conference?
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_00]: No, I really don't.
- 1:04:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think it is more of a we want to sort our will because we are the conference and yes you guys are important that are 15 other important members in this conference too, which I think is what Greg Sanky and company has to do when addressing the situation because like you said that there is.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_00]: an ethical way to do this in this modern changing era of college football, where you get Braxton belly, you get Danny site, you lead to really good players.
- 1:05:05[SPEAKER_00]: They both tried out for NFL rosters.
- 1:05:08[SPEAKER_00]: They were never on that.
- 1:05:09[SPEAKER_00]: They were never on a preseason roster.
- 1:05:11[SPEAKER_00]: So it is totally different from okay Jack Piper and
- 1:05:15[SPEAKER_00]: Day one right whoever it may be tried out not only try it out, but played in preseason games and I was trying to come back That is totally different from being at a mini camp trying to simply make it on to this crew a place in the preseason so I mean
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of us myself included that don't love the whole.
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they tried out for the NFL and now they're coming back to college, but it is different from what at least you're trying to do.
- 1:05:39[SPEAKER_00]: Getting a guy like Dequan right that, why does that list you need Dequan right?
- 1:05:43[SPEAKER_00]: They have Trudeau's green arguably the best tightened into the SEC one of the best in the entire nation.
- 1:05:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like why do they need him?
- 1:05:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is just a lane being lane.
- 1:05:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I think the SEC two will point sick of that, which I'm glad they are because I think this, they are taking this as serious as they need to be taking it.
- 1:06:01[SPEAKER_01]: It flies in the face of two plus decades of what the SEC's been, which is we might go into the conference room.
- 1:06:06[SPEAKER_01]: Our athletic directors and presidents might disagree.
- 1:06:09[SPEAKER_01]: We might have a vote that's very, very close and split, but the second that we vote on something and we decide to do something.
- 1:06:17[SPEAKER_01]: The SEC then comes out and presents the unified front.
- 1:06:20[SPEAKER_01]: And they are the conference that says, we don't have one school that sits aloft the rest, like the big 12 power structure, the ACC power to earn, even the big tin where Rutgers is not being listened to, I think, as much as maybe even like a Mississippi state or Vanderbilt, it various times to pay up what program you look at.
- 1:06:38[SPEAKER_01]: So it does seem like this is the step in and Greg said you'd be like, hey,
- 1:06:43[SPEAKER_01]: we are not going to suddenly turn into everything else that's going on in college.
- 1:06:47[SPEAKER_01]: The ball, and I think also for LSU, it's not just that it's laying, it's that it's will weighed, and it's kimmolki, and it's the fact of how did the less miles there and how did the coacho era it?
- 1:06:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's one of those things of like,
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_01]: At some point, I think they have to step back and be like, we've let you be LSU for a really long time.
- 1:07:04[SPEAKER_01]: And we're kind of cool with it because you bring a championship and something every four or five years minimum.
- 1:07:09[SPEAKER_01]: But this is where we draw the line and we're going to draw that in the sand.
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_01]: Which I will say this though, Ryan, the, you know, journalist and us.
- 1:07:18[SPEAKER_01]: Anytime you get, uh, we serve in a cold cup of gumbo.
- 1:07:23[SPEAKER_01]: Any time you get, I've got rocks in my driveway that are smarter than these people as well as, you know, threatening what, uh, what was it, uh, Senator Kennedy was starting to say, I, these people of Baton Rouge, I.
- 1:07:39[SPEAKER_01]: the senators and state officials are we sure they're not just fine-bomb collars because it sounds like it sounds like the legend colladin is opposed to talking to senators and governors and things like the legend's legion be on him like a hobo on a hamster and what's about yeah it's i mean that's sort of where we are in the the political landscape uh in this country now unfortunately uh but
- 1:08:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's just incredible how fractured everything is.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_02]: And you see these temporary restraining orders and injunctions and all of this stuff all over the place.
- 1:08:21[SPEAKER_02]: And certainly I understand like on an individual level why those athletes and those programs pursued those things.
- 1:08:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's just another sign that, hey, we need some kind of national legislation to not bring us back to what college football was pre-NIL because that horses out of the barn at this point, but give it some structure to where, yes, players are able to get paid, they're able to do things that they weren't able to do before, but we're still
- 1:08:59[SPEAKER_02]: keeping the spirit of college athletics to it and not just becoming an NFL minor league system, which to a certain degree that's what college football is, but there's something different to it, and I think we're in danger of losing that if there's not some kind of national framework eventually and soon.
- 1:09:26[SPEAKER_01]: lead us back to the conversation we had with Roger Denny.
- 1:09:30[SPEAKER_01]: Gosh, a month ago now, time flies when you're covering football.
- 1:09:35[SPEAKER_01]: But you look at it and he, he certainly is like, listen, the lawyer in me looks at it and goes, I think probably got a pretty good claim here, but the athletic administrator in me goes, what are we doing and how are we doing this, which is why.
- 1:09:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think broke a home of the fact that the biggest thing that they have to worry about is as Jim Naked Nage said, it's a long season, one to add depth in a couple of different spots to try and make sure that Oklahoma can be as fresh as possible.
- 1:09:57[SPEAKER_01]: And now, it just becomes a how quickly you can guys learn Brit-metable system, which I know sounds impossible, but I also flip around the other side.
- 1:10:04[SPEAKER_01]: I know you have hours restrictions and it might be apples or oranges, but
- 1:10:08[SPEAKER_01]: We do see NFL teams all the time, add guys, midstream, and put them on a plan to eventually be able to contribute to the team, and I think that the first example of that, and he certainly arrived a little bit early, but Danny Sayley, getting in there, probably buying for at least Nigel Smith's job, and we'll see if he can push his way farther up the defensive tackle ladder up, it'll be interesting to see that being a new wrinkle into college football.
- 1:10:32[SPEAKER_01]: this year.
- 1:10:33[SPEAKER_01]: Gosh, we have so much content on the website, Oklahoma Sooner's onside.com.
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_01]: You want to read anything, you can add yet to say, print venables, all the players, obviously, from both Oklahoma and Michigan players and coaches alike.
- 1:10:45[SPEAKER_01]: Then I have time to do a full stop in.
- 1:10:47[SPEAKER_01]: We'll do some rehash, maybe next week, but I'll use softballs underway in the 28 class.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_01]: They got their first commit, a local commit.
- 1:10:55[SPEAKER_01]: hit that softball tab, Oklahoma students on SI.com, also some intel about some of the other visitors that were in this weekend is it was the first of the no contact period being lifted gash.
- 1:11:08[SPEAKER_01]: The new recruiting vernacular, I used to have it dead and now my brain breaks.
- 1:11:12[SPEAKER_01]: more of the story.
- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you hosted four top recruits.
- 1:11:14[SPEAKER_01]: Got one of them signed or committed, committed.
- 1:11:17[SPEAKER_01]: Got one of them committed.
- 1:11:18[SPEAKER_01]: Other three, obviously, they're hoping Oakland winners on SI.com for all of that.
- 1:11:23[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I think that's where I'm going to leave us here.
- 1:11:25[SPEAKER_01]: A little bit longer pod this week.
- 1:11:27[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, for Michigan Week, duh.
- 1:11:29[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, who has to get off and running for the rest of his midweek plans as it makes a, uh, site editor like me, very, very happy to see many stories already scheduled on the back into our website coming from the desk of John Hoover.
- 1:11:42[SPEAKER_01]: All those be up there.
- 1:11:43[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma suitors on SI.com.
- 1:11:44[SPEAKER_01]: Carsten, I have to find some time to nap today because Carson's got his seahawks getting after it tonight.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_01]: I have to recover from that busy night of U.S. opening so that we can hit the road tomorrow and Ryan just has to deal with me being overall crabby and hungry, which is,
- 1:11:58[SPEAKER_01]: Great, Carson, good luck to your Seahawks, congratulations to Baker Mayfield on his big deal three years, 55 average annual that puts him in a big log jam of a lot of cornbacks that said, yeah, we go and get hashtag paid.
- 1:12:11[SPEAKER_01]: He's the bucks.
- 1:12:13[SPEAKER_03]: He's actually making, he's actually elevated
- 1:12:17[SPEAKER_03]: It's foul right now.
- 1:12:18[SPEAKER_03]: Think about that.
- 1:12:19[SPEAKER_03]: And then when Sam 2010 was got a 50 million dollar deal and then they said, you know what?
- 1:12:23[SPEAKER_03]: Let's change this structure.
- 1:12:25[SPEAKER_03]: We're not giving him Rookie's 50 million dollars anymore.
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_03]: He's back in San Bradford territory after all this.
- 1:12:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but where is Baker made field ping pong table that he bought initially with his first rookie deal, which has been covered in Nazim?
- 1:12:37[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, we need to be on the by week.
- 1:12:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to set Eddie an Eddie Ross that you investigation.
- 1:12:41[SPEAKER_01]: What has happened to San Bradford signing bonus ping pong table that he,
- 1:12:45[SPEAKER_01]: Intimately bought that took care of his parents and that was kind of what he rocked with there for the early part.
- 1:12:50[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's there any space
- 1:12:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think Eddie has a ping-pong table.
- 1:12:54[SPEAKER_01]: He's got a pop a shot that would cut into the televisions that he needs to monitor all of the entertainment that he's, you know, entertainment purposes only as far as that goes.
- 1:13:03[SPEAKER_01]: All right, safe travels to, I guess by self, in Carson, whoves, they travels as you bouts around.
- 1:13:09[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see you in Ann Arbor on Saturday morning.
- 1:13:12[SPEAKER_01]: We will head up to Detroit, Aper will be here and as we go and take in.
- 1:13:18[SPEAKER_01]: I guess we head to a city of bad baseball, hopefully you're in our teams to side to start playing good baseball soon.
- 1:13:23[SPEAKER_01]: That's where we're going to be nice if we could, you know, hold a lead and the bullpen could get an outer to that not relevant, not not necessary for good, the dodges are playing better again.
- 1:13:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's okay, you know, but you're just trying to make me like pick up this desk that I'm using and throw it across the room.
- 1:13:40[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, but at least Pete Crow Armstrong is very likely to get 4040.
- 1:13:45[SPEAKER_01]: Hashtag good at baseball for all that that's all the time we got big shout out to Averte Carson who will see a very very soon hold it down for us jet on to Brady Trippum is well We'll be on the radio with me on Friday morning if you want to hear us wax poetic about Oklahoma Michigan and all the fun stuff
- 1:14:01[SPEAKER_01]: All right, that's all we got here.
- 1:14:03[SPEAKER_01]: We're actually gonna have a post-game pod this time.
- 1:14:05[SPEAKER_01]: I guarantee it.
- 1:14:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not gonna screw it up.
- 1:14:07[SPEAKER_01]: That's on me.
- 1:14:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not gonna screw it up this time.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_01]: Pinky's wearing a promise.
- 1:14:10[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk to you from the field at the Big House in an arbor on Saturday.
- 1:14:15[SPEAKER_01]: Evening until then, have a good everybody and we will talk to you as we can.
