- 0:10Speaker 3: What was that when you did this? You were grabbing things?

- 0:16Speaker 2: Ooh.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Hi, guys. I'm Adam. Welcome.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome, welcome. Now let's get into it. Now picture this.
- 0:21Speaker 2: You're chilling at home, maybe scrolling through TikTok or whatever,
- 0:25Speaker 2: when suddenly your cat starts speaking perfect English.
- 0:28Speaker 4: Nope. Mm-hmm.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Not just meowing, but full-on Shakespeare-level squillikies.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Squillikies. Soliloquies.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Soliloquies.
- 0:38Speaker 1: No.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Soliloquies. Soliloquies. Somebody translate that word. I need a thesaurus.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I had to work through it. I need a thesaurus. Freaky, right?
- 0:46Speaker 2: Well, guys, buckle up, buttercup, because today we are diving
- 0:49Speaker 2: into the world of possessed animals and haunted creatures. We're
- 0:53Speaker 2: talking about furry little critters with a supernatural twist. ghostly
- 0:57Speaker 2: beasts that'll make your blood run cold, and some seriously
- 1:01Speaker 2: messed up animal shenanigans that'll have you side-eyeing your pet
- 1:05Speaker 2: hamster for weeks. Now, trust me, after this episode, you
- 1:09Speaker 2: will never look at your goldfish the same way again.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I side-eye the dogs sometimes. Eddie's eyes are haunted.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Oh, he's a skinwalker.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Yeah, we have a dog named Eddie.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Skinwalker.
- 1:19Speaker 1: He's a skinwalking boy. He's not real. That is a fursuit.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It's evil.
- 1:23Speaker 3: He's so Jekyll and Hyde, though. He's so cute and
- 1:25Speaker 3: so loving.
- 1:26Speaker 1: He will look at you- And then in the next second,
- 1:28Speaker 1: be like, you're a demon, go away!
- 1:30Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 1:31Speaker 1: But before we.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Get into all that craziness, let me remind you to

- 1:53Speaker 2: we have everything. Right now, should we put.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Them on sale?
- 1:56Speaker 3: They are.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Oh!
- 1:57Speaker 3: They are on sale!
- 1:58Speaker 2: And hey, drop a comment below with your own spooky
- 2:01Speaker 2: animal encounters. I honestly read every single one. And who knows,
- 2:05Speaker 2: maybe your story will end up in a future episode.
- 2:08Speaker 2: All right, guys, let's kick things off with a tale
- 2:10Speaker 2: so bizarre, so utterly bonkers, that it makes those my
- 2:14Speaker 2: dog ate my homework excuses look downright believable. I'm talking
- 2:18Speaker 2: about none other than Jeff the Talking Mongoose.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, you heard that right.
- 2:23Speaker 2: And not only any talking mongoose, but one that claimed
- 2:25Speaker 2: to be an earthbound spirit and from the fifth dimension.
- 2:29Speaker 2: So picture it. It is 1931 and we are in
- 2:32Speaker 2: the Isle of Man. No, not the Isle of Men.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Although it does sound like it could be a fun
- 2:37Speaker 2: vacation spot, ladies. We are talking about a tiny island
- 2:40Speaker 2: smack dab in the middle of the Irish Sea. Now
- 2:43Speaker 2: on this island, there is a remote farmhouse called the
- 2:46Speaker 2: Dorlish Cashin. This farmhouse is the home to the Irving family. James,
- 2:52Speaker 2: the dad, Margaret, the mom, and their 13-year-old daughter, Voirie?
- 2:58Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 2:58Speaker 3: I think so.
- 2:59Speaker 1: I think so.
- 3:00Speaker 2: They are just your average run-of-the-mill farming family living their
- 3:03Speaker 2: best life in the literal middle of nowhere.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Ooh, hook me up with that life.
- 3:08Speaker 1: That is like the perfect start to a horror story, though.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Right? Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Little did they know their lives were about to take
- 3:13Speaker 2: a turn for the seriously weird. All of a sudden,
- 3:16Speaker 2: one September day, the Irvings began hearing strange noises from
- 3:20Speaker 2: behind their farmhouse walls.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Talking in the walls, real fun.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Yep.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Oh, I love that.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Hello.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Oh, malfunction. What's in your walls?
- 3:31Speaker 1: What's in your walls?
- 3:32Speaker 3: Nothing good.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Mold.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Moisture.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Now, I don't know about you, but if I heard
- 3:36Speaker 2: weird scratching and rustling in my walls, I would be
- 3:39Speaker 2: calling an exterminator faster than you can say rat infestation.
- 3:43Speaker 1: But not the Irvings.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Oh, no, no.
- 3:44Speaker 1: They decided to wait it out.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Sounds like a problem that will only grow.
- 3:49Speaker 3: What was that?
- 3:49Speaker 1: Did you hear that? Did you hear banging? I heard
- 3:51Speaker 1: something in the literal walls. Did you hit that?
- 3:53Speaker 3: I heard knocking in the walls. I didn't hear anything.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Becca, replay.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Becca, replay that sound. Okay.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Sounds like a problem that will only grow.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Okay.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Sounds like a Okay, sounds like a- that's weird.
- 4:05Speaker 2: At first, they heard barking sounds and spitting sounds, like
- 4:09Speaker 2: some kind of wild animal had taken up residence in
- 4:11Speaker 2: their walls, but then things got real freaky real fast.
- 4:15Speaker 2: One day, this little yellow mongoose pops out.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I need to know what a mongoose is.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I had a mongoose BMX bike back in the day.
- 4:23Speaker 3: So did I.
- 4:24Speaker 1: That's such a Canadian thing.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Wait one sec, I need some fuel. I know we're
- 4:28Speaker 2: getting deep, but so am I. Getting deep into this

- 6:15Speaker 2: thank you so much for sponsoring the show, Factor. Let's
- 6:17Speaker 2: get back into it. Well, in a minute.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, it's almost like that little... That is
- 6:24Speaker 1: a mongoose!
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yeah? You have a literal mongoose behind you? It's a mongoose!
- 6:29Speaker 3: That's a weasel, that one.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Isn't it? But it looks.
- 6:32Speaker 2: They must be from the same thing.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like different areas of the world, same thing.
- 6:36Speaker 1: They're like fourth cousins removed.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yes.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Fourth cousins removed.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Oh god, shit's about....
- 6:42Speaker 1: Shit's about to get weird.
- 6:43Speaker 2: One day, a little yellow mongoose pops out, looks at
- 6:45Speaker 2: the family, and starts talking.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yes, you heard that right. A talking mongoose. Now, I
- 6:50Speaker 1: know what you're thinking. Selina, come on. A talking mongoose?
- 6:53Speaker 1: That's crazy talk. And you're absolutely right. It is crazy talk.
- 6:56Speaker 2: But that's exactly what the Irving family claimed had happened.
- 7:00Speaker 2: This wasn't just some mongoose squeaking or making animal noises. No,
- 7:04Speaker 2: this furry little dude was allegedly speaking perfect English.
- 7:08Speaker 1: This is not scary. This is exciting now.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Yes, I want one of these mongooseses.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I would keep my name Charlie.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Charlie and the mongoose chocolate factory.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And he would bite my finger.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Oh no, Charlie.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So what did this linguistic genius of a mongoose have
- 7:25Speaker 2: to say? Well, according to the Irvings, he introduced himself
- 7:28Speaker 2: as a mongoose from India. Apparently he had been hunted
- 7:31Speaker 2: a lot back home and fearing for his life, he
- 7:34Speaker 2: somehow managed to teleport all the way to the Isle
- 7:37Speaker 2: of Man because that is totally a thing that mongooses
- 7:41Speaker 2: can do, right?
- 7:42Speaker 3: Where is this going? We got teleportation. It's telekinesis next.
- 7:46Speaker 1: We got a talking mongoose that teleports.
- 7:49Speaker 2: All right.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Cool. All right.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I need some scientific data on this one.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Here's the best part. The family decided to call him Jeff.
- 7:56Speaker 3: With a G. Is that a thing in Europe? Please
- 7:58Speaker 3: let us know, Europeans. My name's Jeff. Jeff with a G.
- 8:02Speaker 1: My name's Jeff. Okay, so Jeff, which is a weird
- 8:06Speaker 1: name for a mongoose, if you ask me. But hey,
- 8:10Speaker 1: who am I to judge?
- 8:11Speaker 2: If a talking mongoose shows up in my house, He
- 8:13Speaker 2: can call himself whatever the fuck he wants. I'd probably
- 8:17Speaker 2: be too busy freaking out to argue about names. Now,
- 8:20Speaker 2: Jeff was not your average house guest. Oh no, this
- 8:23Speaker 2: little fella had a personality bigger than the tiny mongoose
- 8:26Speaker 2: body could contain. He popped in and out of the
- 8:29Speaker 2: walls shouting one-liners and dropping wisdom bombs like he was
- 8:33Speaker 2: some kind of furry fortune cookie.
- 8:36Speaker 3: No.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Imagine you just like take all your life advice from Jeff.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Like you just base your life around Jeff. Like Jeff today,
- 8:46Speaker 4: what do I have to do today? And Jeff gives
- 8:48Speaker 4: you some quest. He's like, you're going to learn so
- 8:51Speaker 4: much from this quest. Your soul is just going to
- 8:53Speaker 4: achieve so much in this life.
- 8:55Speaker 1: That would be so weird.
- 8:56Speaker 3: You must.
- 8:56Speaker 1: And you know what's crazy? This happened in the thirties.
- 8:58Speaker 2: So like, think of like the telephone game and what
- 9:00Speaker 2: that would be like.
- 9:01Speaker 1: And I'd be like, yeah, you're crazy. And Edith had
- 9:03Speaker 1: a talking mongoose.
- 9:05Speaker 4: So if you were Jeff, what kind of quest, a
- 9:09Speaker 4: simple quick side quest would you give your owner?
- 9:13Speaker 3: Snacks?
- 9:14Speaker 1: What kind of snacks in the 30s? It's a mongoose,
- 9:17Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Okay, if you were Jeff, what fortune would you give?
- 9:20Speaker 1: You are the light of most people's lives. In bed.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Did you have to say in bed at the end?
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah. All right, one of his favorite phrases was, I
- 9:29Speaker 2: am an earthbound spirit, which, let's be real, is a
- 9:32Speaker 2: pretty deep thing for a mongoose to say. I mean,
- 9:35Speaker 2: most of us humans are trying to figure out our
- 9:37Speaker 2: place in the universe, and here's this mongoose casually declaring
- 9:40Speaker 2: his spiritual status like it's no big deal. But wait,
- 9:45Speaker 2: it gets better. Jeff also liked to proclaim, I am
- 9:49Speaker 2: the fifth dimension.
- 9:50Speaker 1: This is getting too deep. Adam would be up this
- 9:53Speaker 1: mongoose's ass.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Dude, this mongoose is hanging out in the fifth dimension.
- 9:57Speaker 3: That means this mongoose can see the past.
- 9:59Speaker 4: And the future i can see all the things see
- 10:02Speaker 4: all the things that's why he has so much wisdom
- 10:04Speaker 4: i love it there's no timeline and like there's no
- 10:08Speaker 4: time in the fifth dimension it just is everything everything
- 10:12Speaker 4: Time is a construct of the Earth moving around the sun.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Every planet and solar.
- 10:19Speaker 3: System has its own concept of time.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Do your friends ever have a conversation and you just
- 10:23Speaker 2: nod along even though you're not really sure what they're
- 10:26Speaker 2: talking about?
- 10:27Speaker 3: Jeff's fucking deep, bro.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Now, I barely understand the third dimension that we live in,
- 10:31Speaker 2: so thank you, Adam, for your explanation there.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I still don't understand the fifth, though. So, yeah. Jeff
- 10:37Speaker 1: wasn't always Mr.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Nice Guy, though.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Sometimes he'd get a bit sassy sometimes. swearing up a
- 10:43Speaker 2: storm and throwing things around the house. It's like having
- 10:45Speaker 2: a teenage poltergeist, but in mongoose form.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I see the movie now.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Mongoose. Like poltergeist.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Can you imagine trying to have a quiet family dinner
- 10:56Speaker 2: and then suddenly a disembodied voice starts cursing from inside
- 11:00Speaker 2: the walls?
- 11:01Speaker 1: Talk about awkward.
- 11:02Speaker 2: But it wasn't all bad. Apparently, Jeff could be helpful
- 11:05Speaker 2: when he wanted to be. He'd hunt rabbits for the
- 11:08Speaker 2: family's dinner, which was pretty considerate for a supernatural entity.
- 11:12Speaker 3: That is so handy in the 1930s.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Yep.
- 11:15Speaker 3: The Depression. You just have to find food, right? You're
- 11:18Speaker 3: on an island, too.
- 11:19Speaker 1: They're going to put up with his sass for that meat.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Guys, I mean, when is the last time that your
- 11:24Speaker 2: friendly neighborhood ghost brought you a takeout? And get this,
- 11:28Speaker 2: Jeff even liked to sing. Yeah, you heard that right.
- 11:30Speaker 2: A singing, talking, rabbit hunting mongoose. It's like Disney meets
- 11:35Speaker 2: The Exorcist with a dash of National Geographic thrown in.
- 11:39Speaker 1: For good measure.
- 11:40Speaker 4: So this mongoose is like the one and only all
- 11:44Speaker 4: being of everything.
- 11:46Speaker 1: And he came to us in mongoose form.
- 11:48Speaker 4: He's got your wisdom. He's got your mood swings. He's
- 11:52Speaker 4: got your food delivery service.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I just wish they had phones back then to tape
- 11:56Speaker 1: all this.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Right?
- 11:58Speaker 2: Now, as you can probably guess, news of a talking
- 12:00Speaker 2: mongoose spread faster than gossip at a small town bingo night.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Before long, the Irving's farmhouse was the talk of the
- 12:07Speaker 2: paranormal community. Psychic researchers and tabloid journalists flopped to the
- 12:11Speaker 2: Isle of Man, all hoping to get a glimpse, or
- 12:14Speaker 2: better yet, an interview with the chatty little critter. The
- 12:17Speaker 2: Irving's blessed their hearts, tried their best to provide evidence
- 12:21Speaker 2: of Jeff's existence. They released photos that they claimed were
- 12:24Speaker 2: of the mongoose, although, to be honest, they looked more
- 12:27Speaker 2: like blurry shots of a hairy sausage.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Than a supernatural entity.
- 12:31Speaker 1: But hey, it was the 1930s. What can we expect?
- 12:35Speaker 2: Interestingly enough, it wasn't just the Irvings who claimed to
- 12:38Speaker 2: have heard Jeff speak. Other visitors in the farmhouse reported
- 12:42Speaker 2: hearing strange voices and unexplained noises. Now, whether these people
- 12:46Speaker 2: were experiencing genuine paranormal activity or just really wanted to
- 12:50Speaker 2: be a part of the excitement... is up for debate.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I mean, if I traveled all the way to a
- 12:55Speaker 2: remote farm to hear a talking mongoose, you bet I'd
- 12:59Speaker 2: convince myself that every creak and every whisper was a
- 13:01Speaker 2: message from the beyond. But all the investigators who came
- 13:05Speaker 2: to the Dorlish Cashion, none were more famous or more skeptical.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Than the famous Harry Price.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Now, if you're not familiar with Harry Price, think of
- 13:15Speaker 2: him as the 1930s versions of those ghost hunters you
- 13:18Speaker 2: see on TV, but with more tweed, and less night
- 13:21Speaker 2: vision goggles. Price was a well-known psychic researcher, and he
- 13:25Speaker 2: had been corresponding with James Irving for quite some time.
- 13:29Speaker 2: James was practically begging Price to come investigate, probably hoping
- 13:32Speaker 2: that with his seal of approval from a big-shot paranormal investigator,
- 13:36Speaker 2: that this would all validate their extraordinary claims. Finally, in 1935,
- 13:40Speaker 2: Price decided to take the plunge and visit the Irving's farm.
- 13:43Speaker 2: But when police arrived at the farm, things did not
- 13:46Speaker 2: go as planned. For starters, Jeff was nowhere to be seen. Apparently,
- 13:50Speaker 2: the mongoose was not in the talking mood, which, to
- 13:54Speaker 2: be honest, is a pretty convenient excuse. Price got the
- 13:57Speaker 2: grand tour of the farmhouse, seeing all of Jeff's unusual haunts,
- 14:02Speaker 2: but despite his best efforts, he never actually saw or
- 14:05Speaker 2: heard the mongoose for himself. Now, I'm not saying Jeff
- 14:08Speaker 2: was camera shy, but for a mongoose who supposedly loved
- 14:11Speaker 2: to chat... He sure clammed up when a professional investigator
- 14:15Speaker 2: came knocking. In his book, Confessions of a Ghost Hunter,
- 14:18Speaker 2: Price wrote about his experiences at the farmhouse, and he
- 14:21Speaker 2: could not determine whether or not the role of the
- 14:23Speaker 2: investigation that we had taken a part in was farce
- 14:26Speaker 2: or tragedy. Which is a fancy way of saying, I
- 14:29Speaker 2: have no clue what the heck is going on here,
- 14:32Speaker 2: but something smells fishy.
- 14:35Speaker 3: What do you think's going on here?
- 14:36Speaker 1: Yeah, do you think that the mongoose is real?
- 14:38Speaker 3: I think that we have some storytellers.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I want to believe.
- 14:43Speaker 3: I want to believe so bad. I'm the skeptic. You're
- 14:47Speaker 3: the fantasy guru.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I think that they did mushrooms.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Yeah. Very possible.
- 14:55Speaker 2: And then they thought that a mongoose was talking. Or
- 14:57Speaker 2: they are, like, secluded in the middle of a farm
- 15:00Speaker 2: in the middle of nowhere. Did their delusions get to them?
- 15:03Speaker 2: Were they alone for too long?
- 15:06Speaker 4: Or they're, like, super psychically connected and they're the ones
- 15:09Speaker 4: that are in the fifth dimension and they just think
- 15:10Speaker 4: it's Jeff.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Maybe they live in a portal.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I need the cussing, singing, rabbit hunting, mongoose fortune cookie
- 15:18Speaker 2: to be real, and I will take nothing less.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Nothing less!
- 15:21Speaker 3: All right, let's go on the hunt for a mongoose.
- 15:23Speaker 4: All right.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Was Jeff a genuine paranormal phenomenon, a hoax that perplexed
- 15:28Speaker 2: the family, or maybe just a very vivid shared hallucination
- 15:32Speaker 2: brought on by too much goat cheese?
- 15:34Speaker 1: If anyone knows what cheese does to you before bedtime,
- 15:37Speaker 1: it's me, baby.
- 15:38Speaker 2: First up, we got the it's all real camp. These
- 15:41Speaker 2: folks believe that Jeff was exactly what the Irvings claimed.
- 15:45Speaker 2: A talking mongoose with supernatural abilities. Now, I am all
- 15:49Speaker 2: for keeping an open mind, but come on. A mongoose
- 15:52Speaker 2: that can not only talk. but also has claims to
- 15:54Speaker 2: be in the fifth dimension.
- 15:55Speaker 1: That's a stretch. But how do they know about the
- 15:57Speaker 1: fifth dimension in the 30s? I don't know, man.
- 15:59Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I'm lost and I'm liking it.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Even for my paranormal loving brain, when we got the
- 16:04Speaker 2: skeptics to think that it was all elaborate hoax, some
- 16:06Speaker 2: people pointed fingers at Vueri, the 13-year-old daughter. suggesting that
- 16:11Speaker 2: she might have been practicing her ventriloquism skills.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Smart. Ooh, it was a stuffed goose.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Stuffed goose.
- 16:18Speaker 3: A mongoose.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Just throwing her voice.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Others thought it may have been a family-wide effort to
- 16:22Speaker 2: drum up some excitement in their otherwise dull rural life.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Yep, that's my belief.
- 16:26Speaker 4: There you go.
- 16:26Speaker 3: That's where Adam stands.
- 16:27Speaker 1: That's where Adam's jammed.
- 16:28Speaker 3: They're probably just super bored, like... And honestly, can you
- 16:31Speaker 3: blame them?
- 16:32Speaker 1: But here's where it gets interesting. Harry Price, despite his skepticism, couldn't.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Quite figure out the family's motive. In a letter he
- 16:35Speaker 3: wrote in 1936, he.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Said, I agree that the whole family must be mixed
- 16:50Speaker 2: up and that there still remains the question of motive.
- 16:53Speaker 2: It certainly is not to draw people to the Cashin's
- 16:55Speaker 2: Gap because they do their utmost to keep them awake.
- 16:59Speaker 2: The motive for the imposture lies much deeper than mere publicity.
- 17:04Speaker 1: And you know what? He's got a point.
- 17:06Speaker 2: If the Irvings were just looking for attention, why did
- 17:08Speaker 2: they make it so darn difficult for people to actually
- 17:11Speaker 2: witness Jeff in action? It's like opening a restaurant and
- 17:13Speaker 2: then hiding all the food whenever a customer walks in.
- 17:16Speaker 2: It just doesn't make sense. So, what are we left with?
- 17:19Speaker 2: A genuine paranormal phenomenon? Or an elaborate family hoax? Or
- 17:23Speaker 2: something in between? Personally, I think the truth probably lies
- 17:27Speaker 2: somewhere in the murky middle. Maybe the Irvings experienced some
- 17:30Speaker 2: genuinely weird stuff in their farmhouse. Strange noises, unexplained events,
- 17:35Speaker 2: and some sort of thing. And maybe then perhaps their
- 17:37Speaker 2: imagination ran wild. Turning those experiences into the legend of
- 17:41Speaker 2: Jeff the Talking Mongoose. Or maybe, just maybe, there really
- 17:45Speaker 2: was a mongoose with a gift for the gab hanging
- 17:48Speaker 2: out in their walls. Hey, stranger things have happened, right?
- 17:51Speaker 2: Whatever the truth may be, one thing is for sure.
- 17:53Speaker 2: The story of Jeff the Talking Mongoose has stood the
- 17:57Speaker 2: test of time. Nearly a century later and we are
- 18:00Speaker 2: still talking about this chatty little critter. And isn't that
- 18:03Speaker 2: the real magic of paranormal stories?
- 18:06Speaker 1: They stick with us. Make us wonder... and sometimes make us.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Laugh at the sheer absurdity of it all. So the
- 18:11Speaker 2: next time you hear a strange noise in your walls,
- 18:14Speaker 2: who knows? Maybe it's a leaky pipe, or maybe it's
- 18:17Speaker 2: a mongoose from the fifth dimension looking to strike up
- 18:20Speaker 2: a conversation. Either way, maybe think twice before calling the exterminator.
- 18:24Speaker 2: You might be evicting the next paranormal superstar.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Okay, Jeff.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Okay, Jeff.
- 18:29Speaker 4: If you're out there in the fifth dimension still... Please
- 18:32Speaker 4: come to me in one of the local chipmunks or raccoons.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Visit me. Visit me. Visit me. Bring your alien friends.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Maybe stay out of the walls.
- 18:38Speaker 1: You can probe me.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Maybe just show up at the back door once in
- 18:40Speaker 3: a while. The screen door.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Now let's shift gears from our chatty mongoose friend to
- 18:44Speaker 2: something a little more, shall we say, terrifying. Buckle up, folks,
- 18:49Speaker 2: because we are about to meet the legend of the
- 18:51Speaker 2: Black Shuck.
- 18:52Speaker 4: What?
- 18:53Speaker 1: These are the weirdest names. Now let me tell you,
- 18:54Speaker 1: this ain't no Scooby-Doo mystery.
- 18:56Speaker 2: This is the kind of story that will have you
- 18:58Speaker 2: sleeping with all the lights on for a week. So
- 19:01Speaker 2: you're strolling through the English countryside on a foggy night.
- 19:04Speaker 2: The moon is full, casting an eerie glow over the moors.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Suddenly you hear a low growl. You turn and there,
- 19:11Speaker 2: emerging from the mist, is a massive black dog with
- 19:15Speaker 2: eyes like burning coals. Congratulations. You just met the Black Shuck.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Hope you brought an extra pair of panties. The Black Shuck,
- 19:23Speaker 2: my friends, is the stuff of literal nightmares. This spectral
- 19:27Speaker 2: hound has been terrorizing good people of the East Angela
- 19:30Speaker 2: for centuries. And when I say hound, I don't mean
- 19:34Speaker 2: some cute little Pomeranian you can stuff in your purse. No,
- 19:37Speaker 2: we are talking about a beast the size of a
- 19:40Speaker 2: small horse. It is like someone took Clifford, the big
- 19:43Speaker 2: red dog, painted him black, and gave him a serious
- 19:46Speaker 2: attitude problem, and then turned him into a ghost. now
- 19:49Speaker 2: you might be thinking selena come on a giant ghost
- 19:52Speaker 2: dog that's ridiculous and you know what you're absolutely right
- 19:55Speaker 2: and it is absolutely ridiculous but let's go a little
- 19:57Speaker 2: bit deeper into the origins of our spooky canine friend
- 20:00Speaker 2: shall we the name black shuck super weird is thought
- 20:03Speaker 2: to come from the old english word meaning demon Or possibly,
- 20:09Speaker 2: from the local dialect, the word shucky meaning shaggy or hairy.
- 20:13Speaker 2: So basically, we are dealing with a shaggy demon dog.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Great, yeah.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Nightmare, nightmare, nightmare.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Nightmare, nightmare, nightmare! Nightmare, nightmare, nightmare!
- 20:21Speaker 3: You okay?
- 20:22Speaker 1: I'm never okay.
- 20:23Speaker 2: As if regular demons were not bad enough, now we
- 20:25Speaker 2: got ones who shed all over your furniture. The description
- 20:29Speaker 2: of the black shuck varies depending on whom you ask,
- 20:32Speaker 2: but there is a few common themes. First off, he's big. Like,
- 20:36Speaker 2: makes a Great Dane look like a Chihuahua big. And
- 20:38Speaker 2: we're talking about anywhere from the size of a calf
- 20:40Speaker 2: to a horse. Next up, we got the eyes. Now,
- 20:43Speaker 2: most accounts describe the Black Shuck as having glowing red eyes.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Some say they're like burning coals. Others say blazing fires.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Either way, it's not the kind of look that you
- 20:53Speaker 2: want to see peering at you.
- 20:54Speaker 1: In the darkness. And let's not forget the fur. Black
- 20:57Speaker 1: is nice.
- 20:58Speaker 2: They say so black that it seems to absorb the
- 21:00Speaker 2: light around it. But here's where it gets really freaky.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Some accounts say that the black shuck is headless. So
- 21:06Speaker 2: that makes that's weird.
- 21:07Speaker 3: That's not fun. I like my dogs with a head.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Now, you might be thinking this all sounds pretty scary,
- 21:13Speaker 2: but surely this is just some old folktale, right?
- 21:16Speaker 1: Nothing actually to be worried about.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Well, buckle up, because here we're about to take a
- 21:20Speaker 2: trip back to 1577 with a little incident that puts
- 21:23Speaker 2: our spectral pooch firmly and absolutely terrifying category. It was
- 21:28Speaker 2: a dark and stormy night on August 4th, 1577 in Bungay, Suffolk.
- 21:33Speaker 1: The good people of Bungay. Bungay.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Bungay.
- 21:38Speaker 3: Bungay. It sounds like something you rub on your elbow.
- 21:42Speaker 1: To stop tendonitis.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Yep.
- 21:44Speaker 2: The good people of Bungay, the God-fearing folk they were,
- 21:48Speaker 2: decided the best course of action was to hole up
- 21:51Speaker 2: in a St. Mary's church and pray for deliverance. So
- 21:54Speaker 2: there they were, the townsfolk of Bungay, probably singing hymns
- 21:57Speaker 2: and trying not to think about how much the stained
- 22:00Speaker 2: glass windows rattled with each thunderclap. And then, as if
- 22:04Speaker 2: things weren't dramatic enough, a bolt of lightning struck the church.
- 22:08Speaker 2: In all that instant, the witnesses claimed they saw a
- 22:10Speaker 2: massive black dog, and it appeared at the entrance of
- 22:13Speaker 2: the church. In the face of this horse-sized hellhound, the
- 22:16Speaker 2: townsfolk stood their ground. which in hindsight may not have
- 22:20Speaker 2: been the best idea, because what happened next is the
- 22:22Speaker 2: stuff of pure nightmare fuel. The black shuck, not content
- 22:26Speaker 2: with just making a dramatic entrance, decided to go on
- 22:29Speaker 2: a rampage, as an old verse describes it like this.
- 22:32Speaker 2: All down the church in midst of fire, the hellish
- 22:35Speaker 2: monster flew, and passing onward to the choir, he many
- 22:40Speaker 2: people slew. The beast reportedly tore through the church, ripping
- 22:44Speaker 2: out the throats and generally causing a kind of mayhem
- 22:47Speaker 2: that you'd expect from a demonic dog the size of
- 22:49Speaker 2: a horse. But wait, there's more. Because the one church
- 22:53Speaker 2: apparently was not.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Enough for our canine friend.
- 22:55Speaker 2: After thoroughly traumatizing the good people of Bungay, the black
- 22:59Speaker 2: shuck decided to take his tarot show on the road.
- 23:02Speaker 2: It vanished from St. Mary's, only to reappear 12 miles
- 23:05Speaker 2: away at Holy Trinity Church by Blithenburg.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Blith-burg.
- 23:12Speaker 2: At Holy Trinity, the black shuck picked up right where
- 23:14Speaker 2: it left off, wreaking havoc and scaring the ever-loving shit
- 23:19Speaker 2: out of another congregation. You might say that this sounds
- 23:22Speaker 2: like something straight out of.
- 23:23Speaker 1: A horror movie. Surely there's no actual evidence of this happening, right?
- 23:27Speaker 2: Well, hold on to your sage bundles, ghost hunters, because
- 23:30Speaker 2: this is where it gets interesting.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Church records from St. Mary's and Bungay do.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Indeed confirm that there was a terrible storm on that
- 23:37Speaker 2: date in 1577.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And here's the kicker. Two people were found dead in
- 23:42Speaker 1: the belfry.
- 23:43Speaker 2: The records don't specify how they died, but I'm going
- 23:45Speaker 2: to go out on a limb here and say it
- 23:46Speaker 2: probably wasn't from natural causes, unless mauled by a spectral
- 23:51Speaker 2: hound counts as natural in the 16th century England.
- 23:54Speaker 1: At Holy Trinity Church in Plathenburg, you can still see.
- 23:59Speaker 2: The scorch marks on the door to this day. Legend
- 24:02Speaker 2: has it that these are the claw marks left by
- 24:04Speaker 2: the black shuck as it fled the church. Whether or
- 24:08Speaker 2: not the black shuck actually existed or exists, the impact
- 24:12Speaker 2: of this legend on local culture is very real. For centuries,
- 24:15Speaker 2: people in East Anglia have reported sightings of the spectral hound.
- 24:22Speaker 2: It's become a part of the local folklore as ingrained
- 24:25Speaker 2: in its culture as fish and chips or complaining about
- 24:28Speaker 2: the weather. The black shuck has been spotted in graveyards,
- 24:31Speaker 2: on lonely roads, near bodies of water.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Basically any place creepy enough to give you goosebumps. Now,
- 24:37Speaker 1: this is funny.
- 24:37Speaker 2: I see so many videos and it's funny because it's
- 24:40Speaker 2: black men that post it about white women and how
- 24:42Speaker 2: white women will go out and tame any animal to
- 24:45Speaker 2: save it.
- 24:46Speaker 1: And like my gut is like, oh.
- 24:47Speaker 2: It's always on lonely roads and it's by water and
- 24:49Speaker 2: I need to go and I need to save it
- 24:51Speaker 2: because I'm a crazy white woman.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Adam, book it.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Basically, you can find it any place that's creepy enough
- 24:57Speaker 2: to give you goosebumps. But the Black Shuck isn't always
- 25:00Speaker 2: seen as a harbinger of doom. In some stories, it's
- 25:04Speaker 2: actually considered to be a protector. There are tales of
- 25:07Speaker 2: the Black Shuck accompanying lone travelers on their dark nights,
- 25:10Speaker 2: keeping them safe from harm. In other stories, the Black
- 25:13Speaker 2: Shuck is seen as an omen of death. If you
- 25:16Speaker 2: see the hound, legend has it that you or someone
- 25:18Speaker 2: close to you will die soon. Is the Black Shuck real?
- 25:22Speaker 2: Is it all a bunch of superstitious nonsense? Or is
- 25:25Speaker 2: there something more to the sightings? Well, as with most
- 25:29Speaker 2: things in the paranormal world, there is no easy answer.
- 25:32Speaker 2: But there are plenty of theories. And boy, are they
- 25:35Speaker 2: fun to dive into. First up, we got the psychological explanation.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Some experts suggest that sightings of the black shuck might
- 25:42Speaker 2: be the result of sleep paralysis. The idea that it's
- 25:45Speaker 2: people experiencing sleep paralysis might hallucinate a large dark figure.
- 25:50Speaker 2: which their mind interprets as a giant black dog. Another
- 25:53Speaker 2: theory suggests the black shuck might be a cultural memory
- 25:57Speaker 2: of some long-extinct large predator. Maybe there used to be
- 26:00Speaker 2: a wolf-like creature roaming East Angela, and over time the
- 26:04Speaker 2: stories of these animals got exaggerated and mixed with supernatural elements.
- 26:09Speaker 1: It's like a game of.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Prehistoric telephone, where Big Wolf somehow became Ghost Dog the
- 26:14Speaker 2: size of a horse with flaming eyes. Then there's the
- 26:16Speaker 2: idea that the Black Shuck may be tied to ley lines.
- 26:19Speaker 1: For those of you who.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Don't spend your weekends dowsing ley lines, they are supposed
- 26:24Speaker 2: to be invisible lines of energy crossing the Earth. Some
- 26:27Speaker 2: folks believe that supernatural entities are drawn to these lines. So,
- 26:32Speaker 2: maybe the Black Shuck's just a spectral puppy following these
- 26:35Speaker 2: cosmic highways. All jokes aside, though, the enduring legend of
- 26:39Speaker 2: the Black Shuck tells us something important about human nature
- 26:43Speaker 2: and our relationship with the unknown.
- 26:45Speaker 1: We have been telling.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Stories about mysterious creatures for as long as we have
- 26:48Speaker 2: been able to talk. From the monsters and the ancient
- 26:50Speaker 2: myths to modern day urban legends, there is something in
- 26:54Speaker 2: us that.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Loves a good scare.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Maybe it's our way of making sense of a world
- 26:58Speaker 2: that's often so chaotic and unpredictable. Maybe it's how we
- 27:01Speaker 2: process our fears, giving them shape and form so we
- 27:05Speaker 2: can face them.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Or maybe we just really like spooky stories.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Whatever the reason, legends like the Black Shuck serve an
- 27:13Speaker 2: important purpose in our culture. They connect us to the past,
- 27:17Speaker 2: the people who walked the same lands hundreds of years
- 27:19Speaker 2: ago and saw shadows moving through the mist. They give
- 27:23Speaker 2: us a shared experience and common ground. So whether you
- 27:27Speaker 2: believe in the Black Shuck or not, whether you think
- 27:29Speaker 2: it's a real or supernatural entity, or just a cool
- 27:32Speaker 2: story to tell around the campfire, there is no denying
- 27:35Speaker 2: its impact on the culture of East Angela and beyond.
- 27:38Speaker 2: It's a reminder that the world is still full of
- 27:40Speaker 2: mystery and that there are still shadows that we don't
- 27:43Speaker 2: fully understand. And that sometimes is the best response to
- 27:47Speaker 2: the unknown. It's just simply to tell a really good
- 27:50Speaker 2: story about it. Now, I want to hear from you guys.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Have you had an encounter with a supernatural animal? Maybe
- 27:56Speaker 2: a ghost cat that keeps knocking things off your shelves
- 28:00Speaker 2: from the great beyond? Or a spectral fish that does
- 28:02Speaker 2: backflips in your toilet bowl? Drop your stories in the
- 28:06Speaker 2: comments below. And until next time, Keep your eyes peeled
- 28:09Speaker 2: for talking animals, your ears open for ghosts who bark,
- 28:12Speaker 2: and save the ghost pets and feed them and find
- 28:15Speaker 2: them new homes.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Woof!
- 28:18Speaker 1: Adam!
- 28:18Speaker 3: Did you hear that? Get the leash! You have a
- 28:25Speaker 3: lot of boyfriends. We need to have a talk. Bye.
- 28:34Speaker 3: You forgot one.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Aww.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Where is it? You asked. I'm going to pass out.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Bye. Oh, cross-country skiing. Now we're just downhill skiing.
- 28:48Speaker 1: We're going downhill skiing. I hope not.
