- 0:00Bob. Christopher Bell, NASCAR driver.
- 0:03Did you pick me today? No, I didn't.
- 0:06I did not pick you. Bob's picks are notoriously the
- 0:09worst. If he picks you, or at least me.
- 0:12If he picks me, I don't win. Yeah, I picked you last week.
- 0:15I know, I know. And I sucked.
- 0:18So that was all you last week? I'll.
- 0:20Yeah, I'll. I'll.
- 0:21I'll own it. Yeah.
- 0:22Well, you picked me. So you jinxed me.
- 0:23All right. Well, my question is, did you
- 0:25come into you? You had that deal last week,
- 0:29flat tire, bad week coming the last time you were here you
- 0:33blew. A brake rotor.
- 0:34So were you. Did you come in here an angry
- 0:36man? And did that matter?
- 0:38I came in here a sad man, Bob. No, I was not angry.
- 0:43I was just sad. And yeah just I don't know, I I
- 0:49suck it like trying to stay upbeat after a a run of bad
- 0:54races and you know Atlanta was furthest from my fault and but
- 1:00it's still a 30 whatever 4th place finish and then we had a
- 1:0333rd place finish last week so that was pretty sad and you know
- 1:08I I I try to not let that affect my my driving and then we showed
- 1:12up on Friday and had a bunch of pace had a really good practice
- 1:17so I was feeling a lot better about it that Friday.
- 1:19So were you sad? After a pit stop.
- 1:21Dropped you to 10th and then you're when during the.
- 1:25Pit stop cycles. You're in.
- 1:27You're around 20th. Yeah, I went to mad.
- 1:30I was mad then. But you know, I knew that
- 1:34mistakes happen and I spun out last week, so I I was nervous
- 1:40about getting up through there because passing was extremely
- 1:42difficult and my car was not very good.
- 1:46Whenever I was back in traffic on the restarts, I struggled to
- 1:48move forward and it it took me a couple laps for this field to
- 1:51get strung out before I could start making passes.
- 1:53So that was disheartening. And then whenever they flipped
- 1:58the strap, the strategy or the yellow came out and flipped the
- 2:01strategy and buried us. I I just, I don't know, I I was
- 2:05probably less mad at that point than I was whenever we lost the
- 2:08lead from the pit stop. But at that point it was just
- 2:12like OK, well if I get to 15th or 10th or whatever it is, it's
- 2:16going to be. And I think I got to the first
- 2:18car on 4 tires and then it started looking a little bit
- 2:23more positive. I wasn't thinking when at all
- 2:26until I got to third behind the 54 and I knew the 19 didn't have
- 2:30enough gas to finish and the 54 was on right side tires.
- 2:34So I knew that I was in pretty good shape at that point.
- 2:37So obviously you come out here for the test and you know, you
- 2:39leave feeling optimistic. And Toyota in general is like,
- 2:42oh man, like maybe we have something here.
- 2:44But at what point you know, Friday where you're like, OK?
- 2:47This is yes. This is exactly.
- 2:49What we thought and we do have fast.
- 2:51Cars and. You know, I think we're going to
- 2:53have something to work with here.
- 2:55Well, I'm sure Adam knew that before I did because he's seen
- 2:58the lap times of like how we stack up against everyone else
- 3:02and inside the car, you know, I I thought that it drove pretty
- 3:05well. But you never know, sometimes it
- 3:07drives really well and you're slow.
- 3:08So I was just out there making laps and then after practice
- 3:12Friday night, whenever you go back and look at the the lap
- 3:15times it, you know, that's whenever it starts to sink in
- 3:17that, you know we're going to have a a shot at it.
- 3:20Saturday qualifying. Oh my gosh, I don't know what it
- 3:24is about qualifying at this racetrack, but it has my number
- 3:27and it is. I think out of the five
- 3:31qualifying sessions that we've had, I've only made the final
- 3:33round once and and that's that's a huge deal.
- 3:37So coming back in November we've got to make the final round of
- 3:41qualifying and and see where we stack up.
- 3:44So Saturday was disheartening and and we'll definitely be
- 3:48focusing on that for November. We're here to write to Eric
- 3:52Christopher. Eric List blazeradio.com first
- 3:55full weekend with the new short track package works out clearly
- 3:58for your favor. But your thoughts on it, it was
- 4:02different. I, you know, I I don't think
- 4:05that it was any better in traffic, but it drove different.
- 4:09The car handled significantly different.
- 4:11And, you know, I'm sure that the racing probably didn't look much
- 4:17better, but it was different inside the car.
- 4:22Cooper, when I talked yesterday, said you didn't have a comment
- 4:25on the tires, but, you know, kind of just wanted to see your
- 4:27feedback after three and 12 laps.
- 4:29Obviously, it worked out pretty well in your favor today.
- 4:32Yeah, I mean, the package that we had really liked the new
- 4:36tires. So it was good for me and and,
- 4:40you know, bad for other people. So I'm sure that, you know, I'm
- 4:44going to say that it was great and other people are going to
- 4:45say that it wasn't very good. But yeah, I mean the racing
- 4:50probably in my eyes, wasn't much different than what we've had in
- 4:53the past. Next Giuliana, then the Zach.
- 4:55Hey Christopher Giuliano Moeller Blaze.
- 4:57Radioonline.com. As you said earlier after the
- 5:00race, this. Is a very important track.
- 5:02If you ever want to win a championship after failing to
- 5:05finish last time here in November and already racing out
- 5:07here. Two times.
- 5:09How important is it to? You to prove that you've had.
- 5:11Success here and is there anything?
- 5:12You learned today. That'll help you next time out
- 5:14here, Yeah. I mean, I think we learned a lot
- 5:17and and so did everyone else though.
- 5:19So, you know, it seemed like the Toyota's had the advantage this
- 5:23week and I'm sure that everybody else is going to go back to the
- 5:25drawing board and and be a lot more competitive whenever we
- 5:28come back. So while it makes me feel
- 5:32optimistic about where we're at for the championship race,
- 5:34there's still a lot of racing and a lot of development that's
- 5:36going to go on between now and then.
- 5:38So I don't think you can look too much into what happens today
- 5:42for November. But yeah, I mean it was, it was
- 5:46a great day to be in a Toyota. We'll go to Zach, then the Lee,
- 5:50then the Brett and Michaela, Zach, Zach sterniel@nascar.com.
- 5:54Christopher, you talked about the emphasis of making the final
- 5:57round of qualifying when you come back here in November.
- 5:59But at the same time, you guys have had great long run speed
- 6:01both back in November and today. So is it worth sacrificing some
- 6:05of that or or what do you think it would sacrifice any of that
- 6:08long run speed? I mean, I have to be better on
- 6:11restarts. Even today I was terrible on
- 6:14restarts and never move forward until the field started
- 6:18stringing out. So you know today it worked out
- 6:21because the race stayed green and we got a long green flag run
- 6:24in and and that played to my strength.
- 6:27But you know if the yellow flag comes out with 15 to go, 10 to
- 6:30go, the guy who restarts the best is going to win.
- 6:32So you know that's equally as important and and arguably more
- 6:37important depending on how the yellow flags fall and and we
- 6:40know that I I have to get better at that for November.
- 6:45OK, go Lee, Brett, Mikayla, Dustin.
- 6:48Christopher Lee, Spencer Sirius, NASCAR XM Radio.
- 6:55I was just kind of curious that at the end the Fords came out of
- 6:58nowhere. I mean, they didn't appear
- 7:00dominant all day long and then they were there and I mean you
- 7:03checked out to a 5 second lead, but Buscher was able to get
- 7:07around tie at the end. And I'm just kind of curious,
- 7:10you know what? Was it like?
- 7:12Racing them or were you surprised as well to see them
- 7:14up? No I don't think I was
- 7:17surprised. You know he the Butcher and
- 7:19Keselowski were were really good at at the previous race I'm
- 7:24pretty sure and I know Butcher was fast at the test.
- 7:27So I knew that they were going to be competitive and and I
- 7:30don't know what the tire strategy was behind me, but I do
- 7:33know the tie was on 2 tires. So that's a really big
- 7:36disadvantage compared to at least myself and and I don't
- 7:39know if Butcher was on four or not, but Ty was definitely, you
- 7:43know, not in the best spot. Go to your right to Brett.
- 7:47My name is Brett Sampson from Brigham Young University.
- 7:50Christopher, first and foremost, thank you for your win today.
- 7:53My mom can go to bed happy tonight.
- 7:55Thank you. Second.
- 7:56Thank you, Mom. Second.
- 7:59How do you? Feel your test here in December
- 8:00helped your win today. Yeah I mean the test in December
- 8:04you guys, honestly it's it's tough because we came here for
- 8:08two days and we tried like the feels like 18 different rules
- 8:11packages and before right before we put this package on the car,
- 8:17my engine blew up. So we came here for two days and
- 8:20I didn't even get to run the the current rules package.
- 8:22So I had no idea and my team had no notes on it.
- 8:25But regardless we showed a lot of pace no matter what the the
- 8:29package was in December. So that was we left here
- 8:32optimistic and and it's still you know pay dividends this
- 8:37weekend because we were really fast right off the truck.
- 8:40We're going to Michaela, then to Dustin, then to Dominic.
- 8:43Hi, Michaela Bannon from the Lumberjack.
- 8:46So obviously, as we talked. About just all weekend long.
- 8:49There's a new. Short track package.
- 8:51You know, there's new tires, new Toyota bodies, just a lot of new
- 8:54stuff. How much?
- 8:56Of this. Like the of the new package, can
- 8:58you credit to to to today's win? That's a good question.
- 9:05I don't know it it it drove a lot different.
- 9:07I I know I've already said that but the I guess less diffuser
- 9:12and more spoiler on the car made the car slide around a little
- 9:15bit. You could definitely drive it
- 9:16looser and more sideways than you could in in the previous
- 9:20races. And yeah, I mean I I think it
- 9:24definitely shook up the field and and whenever we come back in
- 9:28November, everyone's going to have a lot more development on
- 9:30these tires, on these this aero package.
- 9:32So I would expect November to be a much different race, hopefully
- 9:38the same winter, but I would expect it to be a much different
- 9:40race, Dustin. Dustin Long, NBC Sports.
- 9:47Can you take me back to the after you were 20th on the
- 9:53restart? And at that point, I know you
- 9:56say you're not taught to think about when, but a key moment was
- 9:58getting by the 45 because you're on the same strategy.
- 10:01Can you take me back and how you were able to do that?
- 10:04Because that seems like in one sense that's a very key move,
- 10:07because he got stuck in in the mess after that.
- 10:11Yeah, honestly, I don't even know how I passed him, but we
- 10:14were. The restarts are just so crazy
- 10:16here. You're 3 wide, 4 wide, and I
- 10:19have no idea. You don't, You don't even really
- 10:21see cars or card numbers at that point.
- 10:23You're just trying to go find clean air and run a lane that
- 10:26they're not in. But yeah, I broke through and I
- 10:31kept. I knew that the 45 was on 4
- 10:33tires and he was, you know, clearly one of the best cars
- 10:36today. So whenever I got by him, I knew
- 10:39that I still didn't think I was going to win, but I knew that I
- 10:42was in a good spot being the first car on my strategy.
- 10:44And for as much as you talked about in the first stage on the
- 10:48radio about how tight the car was and and the struggles there,
- 10:52you guys make the adjustments And in the second stage I think
- 10:54it was like 50 to go. Adam's like, hey, you guys are
- 10:57in good shape, but he almost said don't worry about the 1st
- 11:002:00. Cars.
- 11:01And you ended up racing everybody back and and winning
- 11:04that stage. And I'm curious, when did you
- 11:06feel like that car was as you're making the move?
- 11:10Hey, there's there's something here.
- 11:11This is not like earlier and maybe I can go get this stage 1.
- 11:16Yeah, probably, I don't know, 1020 laps into the the second
- 11:22stage and it wasn't immediate, like whenever we restarted stage
- 11:25two I I didn't get a good restart and I was still
- 11:28struggling a little bit. But then once we got some
- 11:30separation and I was able to move around and get clean air on
- 11:36my car I or cleaner air it it it drove better and I was able to
- 11:40make passes and you know I I didn't know that I was capable
- 11:45of winning the race until late in stage two really whenever I
- 11:49got to 3rd and then you know I I I could see myself closing on
- 11:53the the the 2 liters. So yeah, I wasn't until late in
- 11:56the in the second stage that I knew that I had a a car capable
- 11:59of winning. And what does this mean for this
- 12:03team? Obviously you've been to the
- 12:04championship for the last two years.
- 12:05You've talked about, hey, so much can change between now and
- 12:08then, so there's still a lot of the season to go.
- 12:11But for you guys to be fast all weekend and to overcome
- 12:16obstacles, what does this do for this team at this point moving
- 12:21forward? Yeah I mean I just hope that
- 12:23this gives a little bit more insight to you know the world
- 12:29the capability that the 20 team has and and I feel like the last
- 12:33two years through the next Gen. era myself and everyone inside
- 12:38of our team has seen glimpses of the potential but haven't really
- 12:42been able to live it to fruition yet.
- 12:45So you know that we're we're I I mean I say this a lot and and
- 12:51there's you know the rest is up to to us to make it happen.
- 12:54But I feel like this is just the beginning and you know he he
- 12:57making the final four and winning one or two races a year
- 13:00is is that's not our end goal. Like we don't want to be a you
- 13:03know A2 win one or two win a year team.
- 13:05We want to be the, you know, be a championship contender year
- 13:08after year and, you know, multiple race wins year after
- 13:12year. Next to Dominic, Dominic ought
- 13:16to go on with the racing experts. 4 races, four different
- 13:18winners. So in your opinion, do you think
- 13:20we get 1617 winners? Do you feel like you need to
- 13:22have another win to feel secure for a playoff spot this year?
- 13:27Well, technically we're race two of the real races.
- 13:30So, you know, I don't even know who won Daytona.
- 13:33William, Byron. Byron, OK, Byron won Daytona.
- 13:38So yeah I mean really I I think everyone in the industry knew
- 13:42going into the season having Daytona and Elena back-to-back
- 13:47with the reconfiguration Atlanta that nobody knew or they were
- 13:50going to be possibly two different you know unexpected
- 13:55winners and and Byron is definitely not an unexpected
- 13:58winner and and so we're two races in and it's you know the
- 14:04the I think we're seeing a trend of of who's going to be up front
- 14:08and yeah so I I don't think that we'll get there this year and
- 14:12and I think the the races you'll see the normal contenders start
- 14:15being up front more often. Do we have any additional
- 14:18questions for our race winner? Let's go back to Bob Pochrus.
- 14:24You said the. Felt like the race was going.
- 14:26To be. Different in November have so.
- 14:29Just because everyone is going to have so much more development
- 14:33time on this aero package. And you know, we we showed up in
- 14:36the Hendrick cars, they clearly missed it this week, right?
- 14:39And they're not going to miss it in November.
- 14:41Whenever a championship's on the line and they've had however
- 14:43many races to you know get their their setup dialed in.
- 14:47So clearly the JGR cars and the Toyota group hit on the setup
- 14:52the best and and you know we we saw that in 2022 whenever next
- 14:56Gen. was first introduced the the the Fords like smoked
- 15:00everybody this this race. So it just takes time with these
- 15:04these changes to optimize it and we're on the winning side of it
- 15:09this time. But the field is going to be you
- 15:12know tighter and and and I would expect that you know the the
- 15:16favorites are going to be up front whenever we come back in
- 15:18November. We'll finish here with Elliot.
- 15:24Elliot Stern Sports Talk 8 O. Five, you said in stage two when
- 15:28you started to stretch out and you could get some clean air and
- 15:32you can maneuver and start moving through the.
- 15:33Field. So did that give you the
- 15:35confidence that you could do it again when you had to do it
- 15:38again on stage? Three.
- 15:39It did not. Was it fun?
- 15:41Whatever. Is it fun?
- 15:44Yeah. I mean, driving race cars is
- 15:46fun, but it's it's it's not very fun in the moment.
- 15:50Like, you know, sitting here right now looking back at it.
- 15:53Yeah, it's a lot of fun passing cars and driving through the
- 15:55field. But, you know, I just drove
- 15:57through the field once and whenever I got put back, I
- 15:59didn't think that there was any way that I can do it again.
- 16:01And and as the race progresses, it gets harder and harder to
- 16:06pass for the the same development reason like
- 16:09everyone's working on their cars, their balance is getting
- 16:10closer, so it it becomes harder to pass later in the race.
- 16:14And I didn't think that there was any way I was going to be
- 16:16able to make it up through there twice.
- 16:18But you did, and then you just blew their doors.
- 16:21Off I drove, I drove a a rocket ship today, that's for sure.
- 16:25And it's it's a credit to my car, not me.
- 16:28Christopher congratulations on the win and good luck next week
- 16:32at Bristol Motor Speedway. Thank you, guys.
- 16:34Don't pick me next week, Bob. He didn't even hear.
- 16:41Me.
