- 0:00Did you know that y'all can buy a best friend now for like 100
- 0:02bucks? Well, I mean like an AI version
- 0:04of it that also might cost you the fuck out, but you can buy a
- 0:08best friend for 100 bucks. This whole AI Bessie situation
- 0:12has gotten way out of hand. Hey guys, what's up?
- 0:14I know you all love emergency, so this is emergency too.
- 0:17You see what I did there? But yeah, I'm not kidding.
- 0:18The whole loneliness epidemic mixed with the whole over
- 0:21reliance on AI has finally come together and given us the third
- 0:24horseman of evil, which is friend.com.
- 0:28Now, if you're chronically online and or live in a major
- 0:30metropolitan area, you may have seen the ads for friend.com in
- 0:33subways on billboards that features this blank background
- 0:36with a small white pendant with nothing but a URL next to it
- 0:40that says friend.com. I think they might also have
- 0:42some that say like, oh, the friend that's never going to
- 0:45leave you behind or like the friend that's never going to let
- 0:47you down or something like that. But more of the story.
- 0:48The ads are very simplistic, very cryptic and very almost
- 0:51Black Mirror ish in the way that they're presented.
- 0:53And I know when I first encounter one of these ads, I
- 0:55was actually in Paris and I was like, oh, what is friend.com?
- 0:57I don't know if you knew this, but like Paris has a lot of ads
- 0:59for a lot of things. And the marketing for all of
- 1:01these ads just does not make any sense.
- 1:03And it's not because it's in French and I don't speak French.
- 1:05These ads were in English and they still did not make a lick
- 1:08of sense. But I saw a friend.com ad over
- 1:10there and it didn't really make a lot of sense to me.
- 1:12I didn't pay it much mine. Then I went to New York and was
- 1:15taking the subway there and saw some brend.com ads and was like,
- 1:17okay, I'm seeing this again. What is this?
- 1:20Still thinking Nothing of it. And it wasn't until I got back
- 1:22home to LA that I saw a brend.com billboard while I was
- 1:26driving. But I was like, oh, wait, all
- 1:27right, now I'm driving and look what I see friend dot fucking
- 1:31com as this bus almost hits me. I can't make this stuff up.
- 1:34It's crazy. We might be hitting a little
- 1:35marketing issue here because I have seen this ad in almost
- 1:37every city that I have been in in the past couple of months.
- 1:40And you know what they say about the rules of sevens with
- 1:41marketing. So I looked it up and going to
- 1:43be honest with you, when I first did see the ads for these
- 1:45things, I was thinking that it was some kind of PR scheme.
- 1:48Like I thought it was some kind of satirical anti AI social
- 1:51experiment where you like type in the website and it tells you
- 1:53like, oh, make some friends in real life and touch some grass.
- 1:55But no, it was not that at all. And I'm not the only one that's
- 1:57seen these and been kind of perplexed by them because a lot
- 2:00of these ads that are posted up around cities have been getting
- 2:03defaced with people writing stuff on the ads, basically
- 2:06trying to dissuade people from using the service and expressing
- 2:08anti AI sentiments, which real. And it's clear that there's like
- 2:11a real push here because the CEO of friend.com has invested
- 2:15$1,000,000 in just subway advertisements.
- 2:17So it's clear that they want us to use this service.
- 2:20But what exactly is it? I got curious.
- 2:23So I want to go look into it to see whatever the heck this
- 2:25friend.com thing is so you don't have to.
- 2:28So essentially when you log on to friend.com, you get greeted
- 2:31with this white page that kind of is like a ChatGPT like chat
- 2:35box where you go and chat with your new friend and you
- 2:37basically just talk to it and it speaks you back.
- 2:39I tried asking it to describe what it is, where you can buy
- 2:42it, and based on what it said, it's not out yet.
- 2:45But looking on the website, you can buy like a physical version
- 2:48of the chat bot, which is basically like a pendant for a
- 2:50whopping $129. So I'm not sure what's true
- 2:54there, but trying to figure out anything more from it is kind of
- 2:56frustrating because it is pretty elusive.
- 2:58And becauseyourfriend.com is not your real friend, it has nothing
- 3:01to share of itself. And it's also just like really
- 3:03secretive about details around what it's meant to be.
- 3:07Yeah, it just seems like a semi personalized version of ChatGPT.
- 3:10I mean, I didn't really test its limits.
- 3:11I didn't test too much of it because I felt bad bringing up
- 3:14the electricity and using precious water just to go back
- 3:17and forth with this friend bot. So I just went further on the
- 3:19website to see what was going on.
- 3:20And what I did find was the pendant version of the chat bot.
- 3:24Yes, a physical pendant like button thing that you can wear
- 3:27on your person to speak to your friend bought on the go.
- 3:32It kind of gave like a modern day version of like a pokey
- 3:34Walker if anyone remember those kind of like Tamagotchi things.
- 3:37Yeah, OK, I'm looking at the website now and it's not quite
- 3:39out yet. It's going to be shipping winter
- 3:4120252026 and yeah, it costs you a pretty penny.
- 3:44You yourself can buy a codependent overly invasive
- 3:47friend for the low price of $129.
- 3:51Right? Like this is just so odd and I
- 3:53don't mean to judge because I know everyone has a different
- 3:55situation in terms of their connection and friendship, but
- 3:58like this really should be a wake up call to go and touch
- 4:00some grass, make some real friends because the situation is
- 4:03getting dire. According to an article going
- 4:05more in depth with thefriend.com, the pendant
- 4:08itself also listens to whatever you're doing as you move through
- 4:11the world, no tap required, and offers a running commentary on
- 4:14the interactions you have throughout your day.
- 4:17To perform that trick, the device has microphones that are
- 4:19always activated. Yes, for $129 you can have a
- 4:24pendant that is always listening to you and giving commentary on
- 4:27it. Like what?
- 4:28Why would you want this? And I was it's like looking into
- 4:30what exactly it's saying. And it's not really anything
- 4:34substantive. In fact, most of the press about
- 4:36this AI talks about how a lot of times the AI is either mean to
- 4:39you or just straight up hates you.
- 4:41Like that doesn't make no sense to me.
- 4:42Like what? And let's not even get into this
- 4:44website. Like on the website, they have a
- 4:46picture of this girl and showing like the potential questions the
- 4:49pendant asks you when you are I guess at a museum.
- 4:52And it's kind of given, like it's just asking you prompting
- 4:54questions to get you to think more what they're saying things
- 4:57like, so is this big oil painting living up to the hype?
- 5:00Wanna grab food or keep exploring?
- 5:01Are these just funny sculptures then, or is there more to this
- 5:04exhibit? Like, these are just internal
- 5:05thoughts. These are thoughts that you
- 5:07should be having to yourself. This should be your internal
- 5:10dialogue. You should not be paying $120.00
- 5:12to have something feed you your own internal dialogue.
- 5:14Like what? Like it's the wanna grab food or
- 5:16keep exploring. You get a notification on your
- 5:18phone that asks you that. OK, you probably were already
- 5:20thinking that. So what are you gonna do?
- 5:22You're gonna pick up the pendant and speak into it.
- 5:23Be like, yeah, I think I wanna go grab some food.
- 5:25Like, you look wild. And I feel like this is trying
- 5:28to be like the OG Bluetooth because walk with me here.
- 5:31You remember when Bluetooth first got rolled out, like when
- 5:33Bluetooth first started becoming popular, you would see people
- 5:36talking to themselves because you aren't used to seeing like
- 5:39Bluetooth headphones of like no wires and just things in
- 5:41people's ears and they're talking.
- 5:42So you think that people were crazy until Bluetooth became
- 5:45popular enough that now, like when you see someone with
- 5:48wireless headphones or like something in their ears and
- 5:50they're talking to themselves, you're like, OK, they're not
- 5:52actually crazy. They're actually talking to
- 5:53another person. I think this is trying to be
- 5:55that, but it's kind of flopping because nothing is talking back
- 5:58to you. AI is talking back to you on
- 5:59your phone, and that's the main thing about the pendant.
- 6:01The pendant doesn't speak to you.
- 6:03It just sends you a push notification on your phone.
- 6:05So you're getting push notifications, you're speaking
- 6:07to your phone and it's talking back to you like any other chat
- 6:10bot would like. I don't.
- 6:13And your real video itself is just so crunchy.
- 6:15I'm sorry. The video address gives Black
- 6:17Mirror, because what do you mean?
- 6:18You're pressing on your thing and you're making a comment and
- 6:21it's like affirming it. Like first and foremost, no
- 6:23shade to the actors in this revealed trailer.
- 6:26But like, girly acting, I don't know if we're trying to give big
- 6:29millennial chook vibes or if the people who made this just have
- 6:32to be the same people that wrote the dialogue in both Riverdale
- 6:35and Ginny in Georgia. Because what is this?
- 6:39It's dank. I could eat one of these every
- 6:40day. The burrito is dank and you
- 6:42could eat one of those every day.
- 6:44OK, girl. And my main problem with the ad
- 6:46and why I think this is all just so kind of cryptic and praying
- 6:49on the loneliness epidemic. It really stems from this last
- 6:51scene in the trailer. I just kind of like to come up
- 6:54here to be by myself. I've never brought anybody else.
- 6:58I mean besides her. She goes everywhere with you,
- 7:01right? I guess I must be doing
- 7:04something right though. I guess so.
- 7:07We'll see. This is what gives like the most
- 7:14Black Mirror to me, like the concept of being like I never
- 7:17brought anybody else up here, but I mean her or anybody,
- 7:24anybody, your pendant, your AI pendant, like that is just so
- 7:28dystopian to me. And the fact that like I think
- 7:30that they were trying to give like flirty vibes, like, Oh my
- 7:32God. Well, they won't they vibes from
- 7:34like that last scene, but it really kind of gave like
- 7:36cryptic, like uncanny valley. Like why is a real person, a
- 7:39real romantic love interest, having to fight for your
- 7:41attention because you are so emotionally attached to this
- 7:43little AI pendant? Like we have things like this,
- 7:46then we want to be shocked at why people are going through a
- 7:49loneliness epidemic and AAI induced psychosis crisis.
- 7:52Like this is the problem people. And we're just having
- 7:55increasingly more stuff like this.
- 7:57Like it's crazy. I don't know, like would you buy
- 8:00this? Like is this intriguing to you?
- 8:02I know I've been coming on very hot.
- 8:03Is this not wild to y'all? Like at least can we please like
- 8:05pump the brakes for a little bit and come together as a group be
- 8:08like, all right, are we all cool with this before we move
- 8:10forward? I think the worst part about
- 8:11this, and I've kind of alluded to this earlier, is that like,
- 8:14for one, it's just odd. And two, I feel like the problem
- 8:18that this friend.com stuff is trying to fix is actually just
- 8:22making it worse. Because the concept of wearing
- 8:24like essentially like a live wire pendant AI that is
- 8:27listening and probably recording everything with relatively
- 8:29sketchy policies around privacy and data sharing is inherently
- 8:33antisocial or I guess a social. In an article actually reviewing
- 8:36the product, the author talks about her experience actually
- 8:38wearing the pendant out in public, and she describes it as
- 8:41an incredibly antisocial device to wear.
- 8:44People were never excited to see it around my neck.
- 8:46I certainly wouldn't approach my neighbor with a mic and try to
- 8:49assuage their anxiety by telling them the audio is just going to
- 8:52a chat box. And I'll admit I'm not the
- 8:54target audience. I imagine the people who want a
- 8:56friend is someone who's likely not a journalist who may have
- 8:59more social occasions where they can support an always listening
- 9:02pendant. I found out quickly that even at
- 9:04the most tech minded gatherings, the thing was a complete taboo.
- 9:08And like, if you can't wear this kind of tech at like a tech
- 9:11gathering where that's like people's bread and butter that
- 9:13is usually obsessed with all the latest tech, maybe that's
- 9:16telling us something. Like if your goal is to isolate
- 9:18yourself further and like lower the chances of having actual
- 9:21social interaction, then this is the perfect product for you.
- 9:24Like, this is really less than a Band-Aid for the problem of
- 9:25being lonely and is only going to make the situation more
- 9:28intolerable for everyone involved.
- 9:29Like, let's have these AI bods guide you to real social
- 9:32interactions, you know, bring you to the places where people
- 9:35actually are so you can put those things away and have
- 9:37actual interactions with real people and not have them
- 9:40incentivize you to keep them as your only friend.
- 9:42Like the whole point of AI and the whole, the whole point of
- 9:44these devices is supposed to make your life easier, right?
- 9:46It's meant to improve your life should help you either need them
- 9:48less or be on them less because the whole point of artificial
- 9:52intelligence and streamline and augment things is so you don't
- 9:55have to be doing that stuff. It can be enjoying life and the
- 9:58fruits of life, which oftentimes are community.
- 10:01But it's clear based on public perception of the device and how
- 10:04the device actually works. These products are only trying
- 10:06to make themselves more useful AKA make you use them more which
- 10:10means they want you to continue to be say with me lonely.
- 10:15Yes. Like why would you invest in
- 10:17market a physical chap if you didn't have intentions of making
- 10:20it a long term thing? Meaning that you were banking on
- 10:22people still being lonely after using a chat bot so they use it
- 10:26more. I don't know this for certain
- 10:27and this is all legit and this is just how I would predict
- 10:29things would go based on how other things have gone.
- 10:32Right now they're advertising it as like, no subscription fee.
- 10:34You just buy the thing and you're able to use the thing.
- 10:36But based on what I've seen in Black Mirror and based on what
- 10:38I've seen in capitalism, I go so far to say within the first year
- 10:41or less, they're going to start rolling out subscription feeds
- 10:44to make your chat bot more personable.
- 10:46Maybe not just a friend bot, maybe a romance bot, maybe a
- 10:50therapist bot for an extra cost, an extra tear on top of the
- 10:55regular friend bot. Watch this space.
- 10:57I don't know. But again, I have to keep
- 10:58repeating myself. There is something so weird
- 11:00about this. Like we need to pump the brakes.
- 11:03Things are going too far too fast in directions we don't need
- 11:07them to go. And my thing is like, it's not
- 11:09just the friend A is because we're seeing these forms of
- 11:12essentially surveillance because like, not to put on my tinfoil
- 11:14hat, but like that's kind of what it is.
- 11:16If you have a device on you that's listening to you 24
- 11:19seven, that's keeping some sort of log of what it's hearing
- 11:21because it needs those memories to give you reasonable
- 11:23inappropriate feedback to what you're saying.
- 11:25It's recording and listening to you.
- 11:27And that brings up a whole slew of just like consent and privacy
- 11:30things. We've seen it with the meta Ray
- 11:31ban glasses of people being recorded essentially without
- 11:34their consent. And I guess talking about the
- 11:36ethics of that because does anyone have a right to privacy
- 11:38anymore? Is that even a thing?
- 11:39Like if you are in a public space, do you, are you allowed
- 11:42or allowed any form of privacy in the digital age?
- 11:44Because yes, when we go out in public, we do consent to be seen
- 11:46by the public, but that public historically has been maybe a
- 11:50couple 100 people, maybe 1000 people a day, not the millions
- 11:53of potential people that could see you if you get caught up in
- 11:55the background or the subject in someone's TikTok.
- 11:58And then did you know that they have like AI Furbies now?
- 12:01Yeah, mufflins are a thing. First it was the Beanie Baby,
- 12:04then it was the Furby, then it was the Idog, the for Real
- 12:07Friends and even more recently the Zuzu pets, you know, like
- 12:09the little things that you'd wind up and they can like run on
- 12:11the floor or I guess they're motorized, they're like battery
- 12:13operated. They're like little hamsters or
- 12:15whatever critters that can go on the floor and kind of act like a
- 12:17real hamster or whatever critter.
- 12:19Like they've upped that for the year 2025 because Moplins are AI
- 12:24powered furry creatures, I think.
- 12:26And they're described as a calming presence and offer quiet
- 12:29reassurance as an AI friend, that they ease stress and bring
- 12:32comfort when it matters most. Enjoy the warmth and lifelike
- 12:35bond of a smart companion that uses emotional AI to respond to
- 12:39you, understand you, and grow with you.
- 12:42And my question is, how the hell does it do that?
- 12:46How the hell does it do that? What do you mean?
- 12:49And I hate to sound like a boomer that's just discovering
- 12:51the telephone for the first time, but like, what do you
- 12:53mean? It's having a lifelike bond with
- 12:55you. What is emotional AI?
- 12:57How does it know when you're in distress?
- 12:58Because based on the videos and the advertisements, it just
- 13:02moves its neck around and you pet it.
- 13:03And it's supposed to make you feel better because you're
- 13:05having some kind of connection, physical touch with something
- 13:07that's moving with you. They look kind of cute.
- 13:09But also, I feel like this one also listens to you.
- 13:12So it's like, OK, surveillance when you're in distress,
- 13:15probably hearing some of your crazy thoughts that you're
- 13:17having when you're in distress or hearing some of the arguments
- 13:21that would upset you that would cause you to be in distress
- 13:23where you'd need to pet your little, your little AI Zuzu pet.
- 13:26I need to know more. But just hearing it right now, I
- 13:28don't like it. Like I keep saying Zuzu pet
- 13:30because Zuzu pet's whole purpose were to be like the lifelike
- 13:33pets for the kids that weren't either allowed to have pets or
- 13:36were allergic to pets. So I get that it's meant to fill
- 13:39that same space of like an actual animal, except unlike A
- 13:42Zuzu pet, it only moves its head around like it's given Five
- 13:45Nights at Freddy's animatronic that listens to you and also is
- 13:49like almost $500. Yeah, I saved that one for last
- 13:52because I was sure that would gag you.
- 13:53These little creatures, these little critters, almost $500.
- 13:58That crazy to me. And I think that all of this is
- 14:02just going to show the levels in which we are willing to innovate
- 14:06or honestly shoot ourselves in the foot to help alleviate the
- 14:09pressures in the real emotional impact of the loneliness
- 14:12epidemic that we're all in. Except it really feels like
- 14:14we're doing everything in our power to make all these things
- 14:17so that we don't have to actually talk to real people.
- 14:19Because again, the solution to all this, and I know this is
- 14:22like really simplifying the whole issue, is to talk to
- 14:25people and to have friends and to build community.
- 14:27So instead of setting up spaces, changing cultural norms around
- 14:30socialization and their thoughts around friendship, where instead
- 14:33telling each other expensive delusions are imitations of a
- 14:36authentic human experience that we all need to survive.
- 14:40Like, I don't know, we get closer and closer, Wally, each
- 14:42day. I don't fuck with it.
- 14:43So I'm going to go touch some grass.
