- 0:13I'm your host, Melissa, and it's Monday, February 19th.
- 0:18You'll be interested to know, 146 years ago today, in 1878, Thomas Edison patented the
- 0:26phonograph.
- 0:28The phonograph, which records sound on tinfoil cylinders, was inspired by his telegraph and
- 0:34telephone work.
- 0:36Initially a novelty, it evolved with improvements like wax cylinders and floating stylus, mainly
- 0:42used by experts.
- 0:43The Edison-speaking phonograph company was formed in 1878.
- 0:48Later, Edison's company introduced more user-friendly models, expanding its use in
- 0:55entertainment and business, maintaining relevance despite emerging competing formats.
- 1:01Now that I feel like I've learned something, let's check out the weather in the Boston

- 2:53In local news, Boston Pinnacle Properties is set to revitalize downtown Boston by converting
- 3:00empty office space into 15 new apartments.
- 3:04This innovative project, located at 281 Franklin Street, aims to transform the upper floors
- 3:10of the building, which houses Mediterranean Grill Boston, and Dave's Instant Shoe Repair,
- 3:17into 10 studios and 5 one-bedroom apartments.
- 3:21It's the first under a pilot program converting vacant offices into residential spaces.
- 3:28The Boston Planning and Development Agency will review the proposal in March.
- 3:33The project, costing $1.6 million, includes income-restricted units aligning with inclusionary
- 3:40zoning requirements.
- 3:42This plan is part of a broader initiative to rejuvenate downtown areas, adapting to
- 3:47changes in workplace dynamics post-pandemic.
- 3:57Now on to sports.
- 3:59The Oakland Athletics potential relocation to Las Vegas is now shrouded in uncertainty.
- 4:05ESPN reporter Jeff Besson, appearing on Pardon the Interruption, highlighted widespread doubts
- 4:12about the Movespeed's ability, citing the Athletics' history of organizational miss-outs.
- 4:18Critically, even Las Vegas mayor has expressed skepticism.
- 4:24VAs known for their less-than-stellar management have struggled with simple tasks, raising
- 4:29questions about their capacity to manage such a significant relocation.
- 4:34This skepticism is rooted in a series of blunders, including a poorly received farewell gift
- 4:40to Miguel Cabrera and subpar concession stand offerings, reflecting broader issues in fan
- 4:46engagement and operational confidence.
- 4:50The complexity of relocating a major sports team adds to the challenge, making the successful
- 4:56execution of this move appear increasingly uncertain.
- 5:01In other sports news, the NBA All-Star game was last night.
- 5:05The East beat the West 2-11 to 1-86.
- 5:10The Celtics get back to it on Thursday in a road game against the Bulls.
- 5:16On Saturday in national hockey, the Celtics were hosting the Kings and lost 5-4 in a close
- 5:22one that went to overtime.
- 5:25The Bees are expected to make significant moves before the March 8th trade deadline.
- 5:31General manager Don Sweeney, known for his bowl trades, faces challenges this season
- 5:35due to limited salary cap space and a depleted prospect pool.
- 5:42Key acquisitions in the past include Taylor Hall, Curtis Lazer, Hampus Lindholm, Nunez
- 5:47Treorlov, and Tyler Bertusi.
- 5:51Potential strategies could involve trading Jake DeBrus, a pending unrestricted free agent,
- 5:57to gain draft picks or prospects, and targeting players like Noah Hanifin or Chris Tanev to
- 6:03strengthen defense.
- 6:06Another option is Alexander Carrier from Nashville for a third-pairing role.
- 6:11Despite center being a prior concern, Charlie Coyle and Pavel Zacha have capably filled
- 6:17top center roles, diminishing the need for high-profile center acquisitions.
- 6:22We'll see.
- 6:25Tonight the Bruins are at home taking on the stars.
- 6:31In top news, scientists are exploring groundbreaking geoengineering techniques to combat climate
- 6:38change as traditional methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are lagging.
- 6:45These methods include spraying saltwater into clouds, injecting reflective particles into
- 6:50the sky, and altering ocean chemistry.
- 6:54These once-taboo approaches, now receiving funding and attention, aim to reflect sunlight
- 6:59away from Earth or absorb atmospheric CO2.
- 7:03For example, a project off Australia's coast seeks to brighten clouds in order to cool
- 7:08the Great Barrier Reef's waters, while in Israel reflective particles are being tested
- 7:14to cool the atmosphere.
- 7:17In Massachusetts, researchers plan to reduce ocean acidity and absorb CO2 by adding sodium
- 7:23hydroxide to seawater.
- 7:26While these innovative experiments offer potential short-term climate solutions, they are met
- 7:31with caution due to risks like altered rainfall patterns or harm to marine life.
- 7:38The United Nations Environmental Assembly is debating the implications of such interventions,
- 7:44underlining the delicate balance between innovative solutions and unforeseen consequences.
- 7:52In business news, with record highs in the stock market, investors are debating the stock
- 7:58values using various valuation models.
- 8:02The S&P 500's recent performance raises questions about overvaluation.
- 8:08Models like the price to earnings ratio, which is currently above its 10-year average, suggest
- 8:13stocks may be expensive.
- 8:16Other metrics like the price to book ratio and the equity risk premium also indicate
- 8:21high valuations.
- 8:24The price to earnings growth ratio and the cyclically adjusted price to earnings ratio
- 8:29provide further insights.
- 8:32These models, combined with economic conditions and company health, help investors gauge market
- 8:37status.
- 8:38Notably, tech stocks like Nvidia show high valuations, reflecting their growth potential.
- 8:45Overall, these indicators suggest a cautious approach in a market that might be reaching
- 8:50inflated levels.
- 8:52And speaking of inflated, in crypto movement, Bitcoin is currently just over $52,000, Ethereum
- 9:00is nearing $3,000, and Solana is $112.
- 9:08Moving on to a more local vibe, in our community spotlight on health and wellness, we are working

- 9:54And now, back to the show.
- 9:58Let's talk tech.
- 10:00Chinese automaker BYD is exploring Mexico as a potential base for exporting cars to
- 10:06the U.S.
- 10:08This move aims to bypass hefty U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles.
- 10:14BYD's consideration of factory locations in Mexico aligns with a broader trend of Chinese
- 10:20car industry expansion into North America.
- 10:24If executed, this strategy would allow BYD to leverage Mexico's lower labor costs and
- 10:30favorable trade agreements under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada deal.
- 10:35The move reflects China's growing presence in the global electric vehicle market and
- 10:40poses a competitive challenge to U.S. and other international automakers.
- 10:45Despite potential political risks, this strategic shift illustrates the dynamic and increasingly
- 10:51global nature of the EV industry.
- 10:59And in entertainment news, at the 2024 Keeples Choice Awards, Lenny Kravitz, now 59, was
- 11:07honored with the Music Icon Award.
- 11:10In his acceptance speech, he reflected on his unique journey in the music industry.
- 11:17Kravitz emphasized staying true to himself.
- 11:20Despite industry pressures to conform, he turned down early offers that demanded he
- 11:25change his musical style, which didn't fit conventional categories.
- 11:31His success, a result of his authenticity and faith, spans over 35 years and includes
- 11:37four Grammy wins.
- 11:39Kravitz's mantra, Never Follow the Trends, highlights his commitment to originality.
- 11:46He also expressed gratitude to his parents and performed a medley of hits, demonstrating
- 11:51his enduring impact on music.
- 11:54This recognition comes shortly after his nomination for the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, solidifying
- 12:02his status as a true icon in the music world.
- 12:07Well alrighty folks, it's time for the quote of the day.
- 12:11And today, our quote comes from Lenny himself.
- 12:15The legendary frontman said,
- 12:18I am not trying to change the world.
- 12:22I am just offering my gift that God gave me.
- 12:25And if somebody is moved by it, that's beautiful.
- 12:31And that's a wrap for this morning.
- 12:33Remember to stay tuned tomorrow for more news and updates.
- 12:36Have an amazing day my good friends.
