- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Rider, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: These lessons are inspired by great artists, authors, and thinkers, both past and present.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: For more, you can visit us at dailywriterlife.com.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: As creatives, we seem hardwired to remember every single time we failed in our younger days.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Remember that time you forgot your lines in the school play?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Or the time you drew a picture for the teacher and she hated it?
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Or that time you hit the wrong note in your music solo and everybody laughed?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Of course you remember.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: We carry this same hypersensitivity to failure into adulthood, especially with our writing.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: If we don't have a certain number of blog subscribers, if we don't exceed our projections for book sales, or if we don't live up to somebody's expectations, we see ourselves as a failure.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: But what if our ideas about failure are all wrong?
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: What if there was only one single way to fail, and it was entirely preventable?
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: What if success was a hundred percent within your control?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Here's the good news it is.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Honore Corter is one of the world's leading book coaches.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: In her book, appropriately titled You Must Write a Book, she says The only way your book can be deemed a failure is if you fail to write it.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: I am of the strong opinion that writing a book will serve you more than you can possibly imagine, open doors that might otherwise have stayed locked, and connect you with clients and friends who might never had a way to find you before.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And that's just the beginning.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Well, the same truth applies no matter what type of writing you do.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: The only way to truly fail is if you do not do it.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And this changes the entire definition of success.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Success does not necessarily mean a certain amount of subscribers, book sales, or other metrics.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: You are successful when you focus on what's within your control, which means, first of all, putting your work out there.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Seth Godin famously said, ship the work.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Well, what do you need to ship today?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Is it a book chapter, a blog post, a podcast episode, a newsletter, an email?
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Don't wait until it's perfect.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Do the best you can, hit publish, and then move on.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: This way, you can be a success every single day.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks so much for listening to this episode of the Daily Writer Podcast.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: We really appreciate your support and hope you enjoyed this.
