- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey everybody, I'm Mike Michelson, and if you were at
- 0:02Speaker 1: American Family Field last night or watching from your living
- 0:06Speaker 1: room or pacing around your kitchen unable to sit still
- 0:09Speaker 1: like I was, then you already know exactly how you
- 0:11Speaker 1: feel right now. 16,000 days, that's how long it's been
- 0:15Speaker 1: since the Milwaukee Brewers won a World Series game. 16,000
- 0:19Speaker 1: days since 1982, since Robin Yount and Paul Molitor and
- 0:23Speaker 1: the Cool Runnings days. since fans poured onto the field
- 0:26Speaker 1: at County Stadium thinking they just won a championship that
- 0:29Speaker 1: never actually came. And last night, in front of 43,250
- 0:34Speaker 1: screaming fans under that closed roof, we finally got to
- 0:37Speaker 1: feel it again. 3-2 over Tampa Bay, Game 1 of
- 0:41Speaker 1: the World Series. And if you think that was just
- 0:43Speaker 1: a win, just one game and a best of seven,
- 0:46Speaker 1: then you weren't paying attention to what that number meant.
- 0:49Speaker 1: This was exorcism. This was the ghost of 1982 being
- 0:51Speaker 1: put to rest. at least for one night. Let me
- 1:01Speaker 1: tell you how it went down. We got the first
- 1:04Speaker 1: pitch fireworks, and I mean that literally and figuratively. Jacob
- 1:09Speaker 1: Mizurowski stepped up to the mound and threw a baseball
- 1:12Speaker 1: at 103.5 miles per hour that broke the World Series
- 1:16Speaker 1: velocity record. Before that pitch, only three men in the
- 1:20Speaker 1: entire history of pitch tracking had reached 102 in the
- 1:22Speaker 1: Fall Classic. Aroldis Chapman, Brustar Greideral, Kelvin Herrera, those are
- 1:28Speaker 1: the names on that list. And now Jacob Mizurowski is
- 1:31Speaker 1: up there with them. And he did it as his
- 1:33Speaker 1: very first pitch of the World Series, like he was
- 1:35Speaker 1: just clearing his throat. The roof was closed, the air
- 1:39Speaker 1: was still, and that ball vanished into William Contreras' mitt
- 1:43Speaker 1: with a sound that made the whole stadium gasp, that
- 1:46Speaker 1: set the tone for everything that followed.
- 1:49Speaker 2: And then we got our runs.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Jackson Churio led off and reached base and Christian Yellich
- 1:54Speaker 1: did what Christian Yellich does when the moment demands it.
- 1:57Speaker 1: He lined a shot to center field that just eluded
- 2:00Speaker 1: a sliding Johnny DeLuca and Churio scored. Yellich standing on
- 2:05Speaker 1: third base, the captain of this team pumping his fist.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Then Contreras with the infield pulled in because Tampa Bay
- 2:11Speaker 1: was trying to protect against a sacrifice fly. Contreras just
- 2:14Speaker 1: slapped it past third and scored Yellich. 2-0 first inning,
- 2:18Speaker 1: American family field shaking like it was trying to launch
- 2:21Speaker 1: itself into orbit. I want to talk about the patience
- 2:23Speaker 1: of this team because that first inning told you everything.
- 2:26Speaker 2: They didn't swing out of their shoes. They walked.
- 2:28Speaker 1: They got the leadoff man on. They hit the ball
- 2:31Speaker 1: the other way and made the raise pay for every inch.
- 2:34Speaker 1: That's been the identity of this club all year long.
- 2:36Speaker 1: 10 or 3 wins worth of grinding baseball. Tampa Bay
- 2:40Speaker 1: answered in the 4th. Junior Caminero caught up to a
- 2:44Speaker 1: 101 5-mile-per-hour fastball from Miz and absolutely scorched it, 112
- 2:49Speaker 1: 7-miles-per-hour off the bat. Garrett Mitchell misread it, couldn't break
- 2:54Speaker 1: back in time, and the ball caromed off his glove
- 2:56Speaker 1: for a double. Then Liam Hicks grounded out to Bowers,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and Aranda scored 2-1, and suddenly the game felt like
- 3:02Speaker 1: it was going to be a knife fight. That's what
- 3:04Speaker 1: it was, a knife fight. And the Brewers bullpened that
- 3:08Speaker 1: group that came into this postseason with a 133 ERA,
- 3:12Speaker 1: the best in the entire field. They had to show up.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Aaron Ashby came in and struck out three over his
- 3:18Speaker 1: inning in two thirds. Abner Uribe faced Junior Caminero, the
- 3:21Speaker 1: hottest hitter on the Tampa Bay roster, and struck him
- 3:24Speaker 1: out on three pitches.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Three.
- 3:26Speaker 1: A 90 mile per hour slider that Caminero chased into
- 3:29Speaker 1: the dirt.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That's not luck. That's execution.
- 3:32Speaker 1: That's a pitcher who knows exactly what he's doing in
- 3:34Speaker 1: the biggest moment of his career so far.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And then the seventh inning, Cooper Pratt on base. Two outs.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Kevin Kelly coming in to pitch for Tampa Bay. Jackson
- 3:45Speaker 1: Shurio greets him with a first pitch single down the
- 3:47Speaker 1: right field line. Pratt scores 3-1. An insurance run, the
- 3:51Speaker 1: kind of run that wins championships. And here's something worth noting.
- 3:54Speaker 1: The Brewers scored in both innings where they had a
- 3:56Speaker 1: leadoff hitter reach base.
- 3:58Speaker 2: That's not an accident. That's design.
- 4:00Speaker 1: That's Pat Murphy building a lineup that creates pressure and
- 4:03Speaker 1: then capitalizes on it. But I have to talk about
- 4:06Speaker 1: the ninth inning because if you're a Brewers fan and
- 4:09Speaker 1: your heart didn't stop beating in the top of the ninth,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you need to check your pulse. Trevor McGill came in
- 4:14Speaker 1: to close and then the bottom fell out. Aranda singled.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Simpson singled. Caminero walked. Bases loaded.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Two outs.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Liam Hicks at the plate and he hit a ground
- 4:23Speaker 1: ball to second base. Terang fielded it. Threw to Pratt
- 4:26Speaker 1: at short. Pratt threw to first. Double play.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Game over.
- 4:30Speaker 1: The Brewers dugout erupted. Players were running onto the field.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Fireworks went off. And then everything stopped. The replay review
- 4:37Speaker 1: came in. Pratt's foot was off the bag.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Not a lot. Just slightly. Just enough.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And suddenly that game-ending double play became a single run scoring,
- 4:46Speaker 1: tying run on third, winning run on second. The firework
- 4:50Speaker 1: smoke was still hanging in the air above American Family Field.
- 4:53Speaker 1: The stadium went from euphoria to terror in about four
- 4:56Speaker 1: seconds flat. I have never felt that specific combination of
- 5:00Speaker 1: emotions in my life. I was simultaneously celebrating and praying.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I don't know how that works physically, but it happened.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And then Trevor McGill, who had.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Just watched his save evaporate in real time, who had
- 5:12Speaker 1: just seen the bases loaded with two outs in the
- 5:14Speaker 1: tying run on third. He lined out Yandy Diaz. He
- 5:18Speaker 1: struck out Johnny DeLuca. three outs, game over for real
- 5:22Speaker 1: this time, and that closed roof, which had been trapping
- 5:25Speaker 1: every sound, every cheer, every anxious breath inside that building
- 5:29Speaker 1: for three hours and nine minutes, it finally let us
- 5:31Speaker 1: all scream at once. So where does this leave us?
- 5:35Speaker 1: We lead 1-0 in the series. We've got momentum. We've
- 5:39Speaker 1: got the emotional release of that first win in 16,000 days,
- 5:43Speaker 1: but we also know what happened in 1982.
- 5:46Speaker 2: We won game one, then two. We lost the series.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'm not going to pretend that history doesn't haunt this city,
- 5:51Speaker 1: but last night, for one night, we proved we could
- 5:54Speaker 1: win when it mattered.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Ms.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Uroski gave us five innings in the World Series for
- 5:58Speaker 1: the first time in three postseason starts. The bullpen held.
- 6:02Speaker 1: The bats did just enough. And we survived the ninth
- 6:05Speaker 1: inning in a way that should have broken us. Game
- 6:07Speaker 1: two is coming. And I'll be honest with you, I
- 6:10Speaker 1: don't think I'm going to sleep much between now and then.
- 6:13Speaker 1: But for tonight, tonight, Milwaukee, you earned it.
- 6:15Speaker 2: 16,000 days. And we finally got one back.
