- 1:02Speaker 1: from Hell. Thereof it. Here's the preview of of Hell
- 1:07Speaker 1: Slayer Saint Part two. Nancy. At around twelve forty five
- 1:20Speaker 1: am on September sixteenth, nineteen seventy, Jean Mitchell was on
- 1:25Speaker 1: his way home from work at trans Western Oil pipeline company.
- 1:30Speaker 1: It was quiet, with almost no other vehicles on the road,
- 1:33Speaker 1: nothing out of the ordinary for a sleepy town. On
- 1:36Speaker 1: a work in school night, the man worked a lot
- 1:40Speaker 1: and late an exhausted cog in the big energy machine. Luckily,
- 1:46Speaker 1: his drive home to ten fifty seven Adams Street was short,
- 1:50Speaker 1: just over five miles. When he pulled up to the house,
- 1:54Speaker 1: Jean saw that several lights inside were on. He was
- 1:58Speaker 1: pleasantly surprised. He rarely got to spend time on the
- 2:02Speaker 1: weekdays with his wife and kids. Had Nancy waited up
- 2:05Speaker 1: for him, he wondered. But as he entered the house,
- 2:09Speaker 1: the one thing that caught his attention was the silence Nancy.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Jean said, his voice slightly elevated. There was no answer.
- 2:20Speaker 1: He looked over at the sewing machine. The light was on,
- 2:23Speaker 1: the fabric remained draped between the press or foot and
- 2:27Speaker 1: the throat plate. He could hear the slight buzz of
- 2:31Speaker 1: electricity flowing through the machine as he drew nearer. Nancy's
- 2:36Speaker 1: cigarettes and an ash tray with a partially smoked butt
- 2:39Speaker 1: sat on the sewing table, and underneath, Jean noticed were
- 2:43Speaker 1: his wife's shoes. That was Nancy always barefoot inside Nancy,
- 2:50Speaker 1: he called out again. Still nothing. Jean made his way
- 2:55Speaker 1: around the house, the kitchen, the bathroom, the bedroom. The
- 3:00Speaker 1: search didn't take long. The working class family lived in
- 3:04Speaker 1: a modest home, nothing fancy. His wife was nowhere to
- 3:08Speaker 1: be seen. After waking the children, who'd been asleep in
- 3:13Speaker 1: their bedroom, Jean asked where their mother was. They didn't know.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Wasn't she home, they asked. Confused, Jean traveled from room
- 3:24Speaker 1: to room one more time and then took a look outside. Nothing.
- 3:29Speaker 1: He called several relatives, none of whom had seen or
- 3:32Speaker 1: heard from Nancy, except her uncle, who told Jean that
- 3:36Speaker 1: everything was fine when they spoke just a few hours before.
- 3:40Speaker 1: The man became frantic. It was late, and the unlit
- 3:44Speaker 1: homes spanning the entirety of this block attested to it.
- 3:49Speaker 1: On any other night, it would be the kind of
- 3:51Speaker 1: darkness that says everyone's asleep and nothing bad ever happens here.
- 3:57Speaker 1: But not tonight. Tonight, it and the silence were foreboding.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Jeane needed to know. If anyone heard anything, their slumber
- 4:07Speaker 1: be damned. Next Door, his groggy neighbor rubbed his eyes
- 4:12Speaker 1: but snapped to attention at the line of questioning, gosh, no,
- 4:17Speaker 1: I wouldn't know where she went. He told Jean he'd
- 4:21Speaker 1: heard a car door shut that night, but hadn't noticed
- 4:23Speaker 1: anything else, the neighbor said. Jean then questioned the man
- 4:28Speaker 1: who lived across the street. He reported hearing a dog barking,
- 4:32Speaker 1: but could tell the distraught man nothing else. Jean went
- 4:36Speaker 1: on to speak with a few other neighbors, but none
- 4:39Speaker 1: offered any answers. He stopped, if only for a second,
- 4:44Speaker 1: trying to remain calm, trying to think, but no one
- 4:48Speaker 1: else came to mind. There was no one else to
- 4:51Speaker 1: talk to. After hours of searching in vain for his wife,
- 4:56Speaker 1: Jean went back home and phoned the Winkler County sheriff
- 5:00Speaker 1: office to report her missing. Two deputies arrived at the
- 5:04Speaker 1: Mitchell's home within minutes. First, they took a look around
- 5:08Speaker 1: the house. The officers noticed Nancy's shoes under the sewing
- 5:13Speaker 1: table and the half smoked cigarette as if she'd been
- 5:16Speaker 1: interrupted by a knock on the door and extinguished it
- 5:19Speaker 1: before answering. They noticed her closet and drawers were full.
- 5:24Speaker 1: She obviously hadn't packed up and moved on. Her purse
- 5:29Speaker 1: anyway had been left behind and the billfold found on
- 5:33Speaker 1: the sewing table contained two twenty dollars bills. It seemed
- 5:37Speaker 1: robbery wasn't in the cards. One deputy jotted down Nancy's description.
- 5:44Speaker 1: She was blonde, with blue eyes, and small. She stood
- 5:47Speaker 1: only five feet two inches tall, weighed about one hundred
- 5:51Speaker 1: and ten pounds, and was last seen wearing a double
- 5:54Speaker 1: knit avocado colored dress. It was one of a kind,
- 5:59Speaker 1: one that she had made herself. It was the only
- 6:02Speaker 1: dress missing from her closet, and folks who saw her
- 6:06Speaker 1: at the drug store filling a prescription earlier in the
- 6:09Speaker 1: night also saw her in that outfit, they'd later report
- 6:13Speaker 1: to police. Before leaving the Mitchells, the patrolman checked the
- 6:18Speaker 1: house once more, paying close attention this time to the windows,
- 6:23Speaker 1: all of which were shut and locked. Just like the
- 6:26Speaker 1: back door. There were no signs of a struggle, let
- 6:30Speaker 1: alone forced entry. After the police left, they too spoke
- 6:35Speaker 1: with the neighbors, but found out little more than Jeane had.
- 6:39Speaker 1: No one had seen or heard much of anything that night,
- 6:43Speaker 1: certainly not the screams of a woman in distress. Police
- 6:47Speaker 1: were already theorizing an abduction scenario and figured out the
- 6:52Speaker 1: assailant either covered Nancy's mouth quickly, or had her held
- 6:56Speaker 1: at gunpoint. Friends and relatives flocked to the Mitchell home.
- 7:01Speaker 1: They did their best to console Jane, but no one
- 7:05Speaker 1: could not really He'd been sweet on Nancy since he
- 7:09Speaker 1: could remember, even before they started dating. In the seventh grade,
- 7:13Speaker 1: they were engaged while in the ninth The pit of
- 7:17Speaker 1: Jean's stomach felt unbearably empty.
