Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 62 for Friday, July 10th, 2015.
• 0:05
[upbeat music] Hey, welcome to the Weekly Dose of Fat with me, Sven, and JK.
• 0:23
Hello. With the possible Gomez on the horizon.
• 0:27
Our, uh, erstwhile buddy Gomez is traveling west for a rendezvous with Saddle Ramon at some point in the future, and may be checking in, but I guess when you're traveling you might not even keep track of the days.
• 0:38
[laughs] I know- Depending on what casino you're in- Right... where there's no clocks. I know I wouldn't if I didn't have to. [laughs] Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is brought to you by Surly.
• 0:50
Check out their bikes, wares, and the such at surlybikes.com. What's happening on the show this week, JK?
• 0:57
This week we will be taking calls all show long to ask the question and get your responses: what is the most you would ever, ever spend on winter cycling boots?
• 1:12
Then after that we'll reveal next week's calling question, and we'll check in with the Fatty Farm Field Report, ding, ding, ding, da-ding, ding. And links from all across the interwebs. Yay, interwebs. Yay, internets.
• 1:27
You're so true all the time. JK brought some, uh, cheers beers here today. Yeah. [bottles clinking] Grain Belt, a, a favorite of the, the show.
• 1:38
Somehow easily available at places I go to, which is surprising, 'cause I'm, I'm going for, uh, uh... Oh. Huh. [laughs] Hey, we've got a caller, JK. Hey. Who do we have on the line? Travis up in Anchorage, Alaska.
• 1:56
Hey, Travis. How you doing up there in Anchorage? Oh, doing just great. Absolutely fantastic. We're having a good summer. Weather's been nice. Finally got a little sprinkle of rain to knock the fire danger down.
• 2:09
Trails have been fantastic. Excellent. Did you call in to answer our exciting question? Yeah. Yeah, and I got my wife here with me, too.
• 2:18
She might chime in, but I, I think we both agree that, on the, uh, with regard to what we'd pay for a good pair of winter boots. Right on.
• 2:26
Well, you guys live up in a place where you're gonna need them, so if anybody's got justification to spend some cash, what is the most you'd ever spend on winter cycling boots?
• 2:36
The most that we would ever spend on winter cycling boots would be $500. Wow. That's impressive. Wow. So do you, do you guys ride SPD style boots? Well, we, we- No, we bo- we both ride flats. Okay.
• 2:50
And, and, um, I tried a couple different boot combos this winter. This winter was our first year, uh, fat biking, and, uh, had a lot of issues with the warmth factor, you know?
• 3:02
We did a lot of riding and walking just to get off and warm the feet up. Sure. What did you end up using? Uh... Our winter boots.
• 3:11
Just our winter boots, hiking boots, uh, insulated, 400 gram, and then I put the 45 NRTH Super Space footbed in mine as well, and, uh, still ended up with cold feet.
• 3:24
Down to 10 degrees it was fine, but, uh, once you kinda got below that 10 degree mark, we ended up doing a lot of biking and hiking just to keep the feet warm. Okay. So when you're...
• 3:33
If you would spend 500 bucks on a pair of boots, you'd be looking to get well below zero into the, the minus 20s or 40 area? What's, what's the coldest you're gonna plan on riding? Yeah.
• 3:44
I, I'd like something that took me down to 20 below and, you know, once it gets down below that, I'm hanging out in my garage drinking beer and riding my trainer. [laughs] Right on. All right.
• 3:55
So, uh, what do you got planned for rides during the summer? Uh, we've been, we've been all over the place.
• 4:01
And, uh, yeah, I was listening a couple weeks ago, and I remember Gomez making the comment about people up in Alaska and how, you know, when we get a chance to ride our mountain bikes, we're on them a lot.
• 4:12
So we've been probably riding the fat bikes about once a week, once every couple weeks, and we've been out on the full suspension squishy bikes, doing a whole bunch of different rides up here.
• 4:21
The trail system in Anchorage is just so fantastic that, you know, you can never leave town and get great, great riding in on a daily basis.
• 4:31
But we've done, uh, some, some pass rides, Johnson Pass, and, uh, Lost Lake Trail, which are some traverses. Yeah, just getting out as much as we can, getting the fresh air.
• 4:43
And we did, uh, we took our bikes down to Homer. Uh, we met Gomez down there this winter. In fact, my wife Laurie won the, uh, Gomez gave her the, uh, the Best Wipeout award. [laughs] So [laughs]
• 4:56
in my, in my garage I've got the sprocket, uh, the sprocket of shame hanging up there. [laughs] Right on. Yeah, she ate it on the beach that day.
• 5:04
[laughs] She was riding without studs and pile drived her knee into a rock, and by the time the ride was done it looked like she had two kneecaps- Oh, wow... on one leg.
• 5:12
[laughs] Well, too bad he's not here so she could just, uh, say hey to Gomez. He's actually out traveling west towards, uh, Saddle Ramon eventually. But, uh,
• 5:21
we may get a chance to talk to him here and there during the next couple of weeks if he calls in. Right on. Yeah, we, I saw, read that he was getting ready to go west- westbound on an expedition.
• 5:31
Is he gonna get out to the Oregon coast at all? Uh, I don't think he's planning on getting out there till after, uh, Interbike.
• 5:38
So he's gonna go out to Saddle Ramon on this trip and then come back this way so we can all hang out and do some beach riding.
• 5:44
And then post Interbike I believe he has a plan to go Oregon way, but, you know, it's all in flux. We make a lot of, a lot of fun plans- Right... and we kinda do what we can do. So hopefully he'll get out there. Yeah.
• 5:56
Hopefully I'll get out there. I was just, uh... Last week we had a link in the show notes from- Uh, the path less pedaled, traveled, whatever. [laughs] I don't remember the name of the blog right this second. Yeah.
• 6:06
Yeah, but she had a lot of great tips on up and down the coast, and there's people actively working on making, you know, sort of a, a, a cheater's guide to what makes sense to ride and, and how to transition from certain spots where you gotta go around headlands and stuff like that.
• 6:22
So I'd love to get out there. Yeah, it's absolutely beautiful. I used to live down there and, um, you know, I've been following all your...
• 6:29
following you guys and saw that there was finally some places popping up out there that are renting fat bikes.
• 6:33
So I'm, I'm hoping to get a nice beach ride in there when I head down to see some friends, uh, late August, early September.
• 6:41
And I've, uh, yeah, I've hiked all over out there and, uh, used to hunt out on the, on the coast and, uh, my wife and I recently took a trip down a couple years back and we went f- uh, four-wheeling down there in Florence on the dunes.
• 6:55
And, uh, now, yeah, it would be... I would love to get out there on, on, on the fat bike. All right, man.
• 7:03
Well, thanks for giving us a call and, and having your wife at your side to answer that, uh, most important question of the week. [laughs] Well, yeah, I gotta, I gotta put an asterisk on that.
• 7:14
You know, we do get dividend checks up here where the state gives us about 1,500 to 2,000 a year. [laughs] So our price break might be a little higher than the average folk. [laughs] Right on. All right, man.
• 7:26
Well- Move to Alaska, let the state buy you some warm boots, man. [laughs] That sounds good. All right, Travis, call in any time. All right. Thanks a lot, man. Hey, thanks, man. Yeah. You guys take care. Okay. Later.
• 7:36
Bye. Bye. Bye. All right. So we'll be taking more calls all sh- all show long. [laughs] Oh, so long all show long. And elbow long. Yeah. [laughs] Meanwhile, uh, I think we can, uh, reveal next week's call-in question.
• 7:51
Next week's call-in question will be, "Is your fat bike your all-season friend or just a winter fling?"
• 7:59
Hey, call in next week, Wednesday, from 8:00 to 9:00 PM Central Standard Time to 818-918-2453 and let's discuss. That's 818-918-BIKE.
• 8:13
And we're still wrangling up some regional reporters who can call in with a report about what's happening in the fat bike world. We'll, uh, be looking for people from various areas around the country.
• 8:24
So if you have a spot that you're, uh, actively fat biking and would like to let us know what's happening there, shoot us an email to info@fatbike.com and, uh, let us know what's up and we'll set up a time for you to get on the show and let our listeners know what's going on in your neck of the woods.
• 8:42
You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.

• 9:17
Welcome to this week's Fatty Farm Field Report. [singing] [laughs] I'm trying to do the teletype noise, but it's not really working out very well. Right on. [laughs] Yeah, you know, uh, there's, there's...
• 9:29
You're heading away. You're going away somewhere. Yes. Somewhere beachy on the east coasty. Yes, in the Virginia Beach, Sandbridge Beach area. It's gonna be nice, good.
• 9:40
I- I've only seen, like, two fat bikes, and I was waiting, waiting, like, "Somebody, somebody, some shop rent these out at least, please."
• 9:49
And finally this year, this place right by where I'm staying is, uh, renting out some, uh, bikes. They heard your pleas for- Yeah, yeah... [laughs] My eternal pleas. [laughs] Yeah.
• 9:59
My, my passive, my- Please, I have some pleas for fat bike rentals in- [laughs] In my brain... Virginia Beach. In my brain that I... [laughs] Well, cool. So you're leaving on Friday. Yes. And, uh, either, uh...
• 10:12
Well, give us a call in next week Wednesday, let us know what's up. Yeah, yeah. I haven't locked down, uh, when I'm reserving the, reserving the bike and gonna go tear around, 'cause they have a...
• 10:22
There's a park just south of the beach. I mean, it's just long beach that- Yeah, yeah... I can explore out... sounds perfect. And this way I can- And there's shark attacks. Yeah. [laughs] That's exactly it.
• 10:32
[laughs] You know, if I go out a little far, you know, it floats. Yeah. [laughs] You can sit on top of it and be shark resistant. And I have to get it back by the end of the day, so I don't have to walk it.
• 10:40
Just watch for heli- [laughs] Just watch for helicopters or air- low-flying airplanes. They- Or Roy Scheider- Yeah. [laughs] In like stars and- Yeah... jingling bells and what have you.
• 10:51
Well, I, you know, there's a little bit of, uh, other non-fat bike news out there. There's something going on in France. I, what, what, what do you know about that? [laughs] Ha ha ha. Ha ha. We are climbing the mountain.
• 11:01
Well, we're not in the mountains yet. We are just crashing in the plains. Yes. Man. So I was looking at some of the... Yeah. Oh, yeah, I saw that, the, the- The gruesome footage and the just- What was that, three?
• 11:11
Stage three where it happened? And do people want carbon fiber fat bikes? [laughs] Well, it was funny 'cause I, I, I, I heard about it, but I didn't see any of the footage.
• 11:20
So of course, I'm looking at the footage and, oh, internets, you are so cruel to me at times. I'm watching the one where, with the guy that was chasing his beer that fell.
• 11:32
[laughs] It's just like zing, zing, zing, zing, zing, and then all of a sudden just a random pedestrian [mouth pops] eats it. Wow. [laughs] Much fun. Oh, yes. So that goes on almost till the end of the, uh, uh, month.
• 11:44
I guess we'll probably, hmm, talk about it again next week. They'll- They'll, they'll be already in the mountains by then, so- There's gonna be a winner, I'll bet. Yeah. Hopefully at least one of them finishes.
• 11:55
It, well, yeah. It take, it takes me, like, the whole race to, like, understand what the hell is going on. Right, right. And then by that time it's like, "Oh, wait." And they're already in Paris.
• 12:04
I, I noticed that there's a, a new GoPro HERO4 coming out too. I, I don't know how exciting that is to me, but- Is that that little, that little black box? Yeah, it's very small.
• 12:12
Like, like tiny, tiny, tiny, little, little thing. I mean, it was already tiny. Yeah Now it's half tinier, half the size tinier. Right. Yeah.
• 12:18
So maybe, uh, maybe you fat bikers out there that like the, uh, point of view cameras have something new to play with. It's, it's waterproof without putting a housing on it. Just, it just keeps moving forward.
• 12:28
Make some videos on your new HERO4 GoPro and send them to us. Do it. Do it.
• 12:35
[laughs] All right, on the plus bike side of things, the guys in the shop have a prototype Schlick 8-Ball dressed up in the newest 27 plus gear that we're testing, including the Manitou Magnum 27 plus fork, Sun Ringle Mulefoot 50 millimeter 27.5 rims,
• 12:54
Vee Tire Tracks fatties, the wider 3.25s, and it's got some other cool stuff on for your trail riding pleasure like a KS LEV dropper post, XX1 drive train, and a cool 1UP 44-23 cog for your buddy Sven so he can get up those hills with that 32 front chain ring.
• 13:13
And then there's an assortment of other top shelf components. Look for kind of a preview of that over at plusbikes.com next week. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Hello, caller.
• 13:30
Most I would ever pay- How's it going?... for, for boots would be $299. [laughs] We're, we're- That's it... we're having a little bit of a hard time hearing you, mate.
• 13:49
Hello? Can you hear me now? Yeah, yeah. That's way better than it was before. What were you doing, talking into the wrong end of the phone? [laughs] Yeah, flip it around. [laughs] Uh,
• 14:00
I'm actually, I'm actually traveling at warp 7.5. Just, uh, just went underneath the archway in near Kearney, Nebraska- I remember that arch... on I-80.
• 14:16
[laughs] Driving, uh, driving out west. Driving that train. So what's up, boys? I'm okay. What you guys doing? Oh, just, uh, doing the show here, and, uh, took a call from Travis up in AK answering that question. Oh, hi.
• 14:30
What's the- I know Travis. Travis Hubbard. Yeah, he mentioned that you'd given- Yeah... his wife the, uh, some crash award. [laughs] The Wipeout. The Wipeout Award. [laughs] Yeah. Up there in Homer.
• 14:42
He's from Anchorage, though, but I met him, uh, I met him at the Homer Fat Bike Festival, the Big Fat Bike Festival.
• 14:51
So, uh, I actually have to, I have one thing I gotta get out of the way here, which is I gotta do a shout-out to Kjell, or it's probably Kjell. Uh, he stopped in at Zion Cyclery.
• 15:06
He's from Norway, and he's a regular listener of the show, and he chatted those guys up and made sure that, wanted to say hello to us all. And so shout out to, I'm gonna say Kjell- Yeah, he-... from Norway...
• 15:23
he, uh, he had emailed in asking about where to, where to go if he was in that area, so we sent him to the right place there at Zion Cyclery. Yeah. Do it. And, uh, that's all I really have to say. I'm, uh, on my way.
• 15:39
Tomorrow I'll be in Fort Collins. Gonna visit the Moon Men boys? That's where all the Collins, uh, congregate and- [laughs]... hole themselves up, I hear. Behind, behind a picket fence. Of Collins.
• 15:51
[laughs] A lattice work of Collins. [laughs] I mean, everybody drinks Tom Collins. Hey. And, uh- And they listen to Bootsy Collins. And drink Michael Collins whiskey. [laughs] And listen to Phil Collins.
• 16:07
Guys, I, I called Fort Collins Fort Fun on Instagram, and some guy was like, "Where is that?"
• 16:13
I just wanted to say to the guy that posted that, I resisted putting, you know, your mom's house, your sister's house, depending. Yeah, it could be your grandma's house. I don't know.
• 16:28
[laughs] This, in the age of wonder, Gilf's run wild. All fun. But I stopped myself from posting. Very, very, uh, restrained of you. I know. I've, uh, I've certainly been- Cross-addicted into verbalizing it.
• 16:41
[laughs] So, uh, Gomez, speaking of, speaking of restraint, uh, are, have you restrained yourself from, from cracking one as you're rolling at 80 through Nebraska? [laughs] Oh, fuck yeah.
• 16:56
Yeah, no drinking and driving here, dude. I'm sitting- What's the, what, what's the speed limit down there? It's 75. Oh, there you go. Well, almost. I mean, that's almost too fast to drink and drive. Almost.
• 17:07
Really, folks, don't try it and we don't drink and drive, ever. Never. Not even soda. As far as you know. Or water. So yeah, but I have everything that I own basically in my car.
• 17:17
I took the passenger seat out of my truck, so it, it's complete Beverly Hillbilly. [laughs] [laughs] So just saddle track.
• 17:27
I, I did that in my, uh, my Caravan one time on the way down to, to Kansas, and actually, boy, you get a whole lot more room when there's nobody sitting over there. I'm telling you.
• 17:36
I've got, like, big plastic bins over there. I can actually, like, camp and drive at the same time. I could cook eggs. Just set up the old stove on top of these bins, flip them over.
• 17:48
You want them over easy or you want them scrambled? Over easy, baby. It's so nice. I, I like a little runny yolk. There you go. There you go. So- So that's my plan.
• 17:58
Moon Men and then, uh, Reeb and then, uh, I'm actually, I have an appointment to see the folks at Moots- On Tuesday, going to Fruita. Gonna go ride with my old amigo, Tommy.
• 18:12
And then, uh, after that, gonna make my way to the SaddleDrive. Yippee ki-yay. Fat bikes and other stuff at the old, uh, SaddleDrive there in Ogden, Utah. Yeah, up at Snow Basin, you should.
• 18:28
But it was beautiful last year. Hope you get the same weather we had there last year. It was just fantastic. Well, we'll see. We'll see.
• 18:35
Well, speaking of Ogden, Utah, we should send some healing vibes to our friend Mark Peterson. He's, uh, apparently split the disc in his back. Yeah, heard about that. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He had surgery.
• 18:47
Facebook told me [laughs]. Faceplace tells me everything. Yeah, get well, Mark. Uh- Yeah... he's a, he's a good dude. He's, uh, very, very fat bike frenzy-ish. Yeah, for sure.
• 19:00
But I do think he's kinda- Hear about that... he's kinda discovering what, uh, both Gomez and I at least, and maybe JK, already know, old guys don't fly well on bicycles. I fly well, I just don't land good.
• 19:12
Oh, yeah, right [laughs]. Yeah. Yeah, the takeoff is okay. Yeah. It's wee, oh. It's the crashing that hurts. Yeah. And then, well, the bike that I brought out here is the, uh, is the, uh, Advocate Cycles Watchmen.
• 19:27
And on the way out, I've been listening to The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey, which, uh, Tim Krueger gave me that book. Oh, yeah, right.
• 19:36
And, uh, actually, and since I can't read and drive or drink and drive at the same time, I bought it on tape. Thanks.
• 19:43
And then I've been listening to it because their 29 or 27.5+ bike is named the Hayduke after, uh, George Washington Hayduke, the, one of the characters in the, in the book. Yeah, yeah, I remember the story.
• 19:59
That's great that you can, uh, you can listen to it on the drive. Yeah, I'm doing the whole I'm immersing myself in the whole, uh, Advocate Cycles thing. I'm gonna ride the bike. I'm gonna listen to the book.
• 20:12
I'm gonna dye my beard red, and then I'm gonna be, I'm gonna have, just tell people just call me Tim for this trip. Yeah. And I'll be that guy. Good call.
• 20:20
You could even fill in over there at the Salsa booth when you're in, uh, SaddleDrive. Oh, I'll have to change my whole identity back 'cause then I'll have to be Gomez when I'm there. [laughs] You know, it's invite only.
• 20:33
Oh, right. So once you make the turnaround at SaddleDrive, what's your plan? Are you gonna hotfoot it back or are you gonna make a leisurely stroll back again? Oh, no way. I'm, I'm gonna go through, I'm gonna go through
• 20:46
National, or what is it called? Uh, Great Sand Dunes National Monument. I plan on spending at least a night there, two days there, and I'm gonna fricking find something to ride.
• 21:00
I know I can't ride inside the national monument, but I'm gonna poke around and see what I can find. So there should be some good pictures in there. Super. Is that, uh- And then-... south of the Colorado Springs there?
• 21:14
Yeah, that's off of the, the southern route, so the, the road that would take you across the top of, the very bottom of Colorado. Salinas or Salidas is the town that's right close to Great Sand Dunes.
• 21:28
But then I'm gonna go from there and, uh, and visit the new Borealis facility. New Boo facility,
• 21:37
new Borealis facility, new tour of Moots, where we're gonna get to see and touch and maybe have some, uh, body jewelry welded on me that's, you know, titanium. I'm gonna add some more titanium parts to my body.
• 21:52
Very good. And, uh- JK has a few of those, too... so. Really? Oh, yeah, after his, uh, after his unceremonious exit from his bike at the bottom of the hill on, uh, New Year's Day. Oh, yeah. [laughs] Oh, yeah.
• 22:06
He just- I wasn't there, but I- He just rushed out the door to go to the bathroom [laughs] Really? He's like, "Yeah, that's why Gomez called," 'cause while we don't talk about drinking, I've had about seven beers.
• 22:21
No, just kidding, folks. We just drink apple juice. It looks like beer, but it tastes so, so fruity. Mm-hmm.
• 22:31
So, uh, we had that call from Travis and, uh, he said that he and his wife would both spend up to 500 bucks for warm winter boots.
• 22:41
Being that they're in Alaska, they, uh, were feeling a little cold toed last year in, in their first year in the cold. What do you, what do you think? Well, the, you know, we really wanna talk to consumers.
• 22:53
I talked to a person going to see Adam Blake tomorrow. So I talked to him on the phone and I told him I was calling in, and he said $500. Yeah.
• 23:02
Well, I, you know, I, I can cert- There's a, there's two ways that I can totally see it.
• 23:07
Number one, I'm gonna be going where it's 20 to 40 below and I'm riding flats, and there's just nothing that's cheap that's gonna keep your feet warm, and I like my toes.
• 23:16
And the other reason would be because I'm riding clipless pedals and, you know, there's not the, the breadth of choices in, in clipless shoes. So you gotta take what you can take, so, you know, I, I ha- That's true.
• 23:30
[laughs] I have, I have spent well over $500 on shoes. I just have, like, 60 pairs of them [laughs].
• 23:38
[laughs] My wife- I think that people who ride SPDs probably have a higher pain threshold on the price because they want something very cycling specific and the market is smaller.
• 23:52
Those, those of us that ride flats, I mean, I was just looking at zappos.com and I'm, the, the boot that still to this day, like, makes my eyeballs happy, and I know I've worn, worn them and they make my feet happy, are Sorel Conquest, which are $145 a pair.
• 24:11
Sure. No, I, I have the rare and beautiful and no longer made Wolf Hammers that have-- are made four flat. Yeah. So- I tried to get those but they were already out... yeah.
• 24:26
So now they only make the ones with the cleats and, uh, and who knows what, who knows what this winter has to, uh, has in store for us in accessories and whatnot, but maybe I'll see something at SaddleDrive. Yeah.
• 24:42
Maybe I'll tickle, uh, the secrets right out of David Debre. [laughs] Well, you know where people can find out about it first. There's a site that's got-- it's fat-bike.com. Fat-bike.com Those jerks.
• 24:58
[laughs] Very good. And Eric Sovereign, you, you just, you know, I know you listen to the show every week while you take your bath on, on Friday nights. Yeah, watch out 'cause I'm coming to tickle you, too.
• 25:14
All right, man. Well, if you get a chance next week, can you, uh, can you give us a shout then, too? Oh, I'll have, I'll have-- I brought my, uh, I brought my microphone and computer and...
• 25:26
So I'll probably have some, some beautiful, like, quotes from people that I meet- Cool... along the way Well, we can, we can insert that anywhere you like. [laughs] All right. If I call back, it isn't really me.
• 25:43
It might be me imitating other people. [laughs] I'll try not to laugh like, like I just laughed. I'll try and be like all serious. All right, dude. Drive safe. All right, seeya. Ride crazy. Hey, fat bikers.
• 26:00
This is Chris Daisy from Zion Cyclery. Most of the time I listen to heavy metal, but sometimes I listen to Sven and Gomez on Fat Bike Radio.
• 26:17
