Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / 'X' and the Controversy of Biometric Data Collection
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everybody and welcome back to another episode of the Elon Musk
- 0:03Podcast. Today we're about to discuss a
- 0:05game changing shift in social media, specifically focusing on
- 0:09the platform formerly known as Twitter, now rebranded as X, the
- 0:13platform recently updated its privacy policy and revealed
- 0:16plans to collect biometric data such as facial scans from its
- 0:21premium subscription users, along with employment and
- 0:24educational history. It's a shift that's inviting
- 0:27both intrigue and skepticism, questioning the bounds of user
- 0:30privacy versus technological advancement.
- 0:33But before we get started, let's give a shout out to our
- 0:35sponsorstarshipshirts.com. And if you're a fan of SpaceX
- 0:39and you want to get your hands on some top quality quick
- 0:42delivery merchandise, look no further.
- 0:44Head on over to starshipshirts.com for the best
- 0:47in SpaceX inspired gear. Now, what's going on with X, the
- 0:51social media platform's new privacy policy update, in a case
- 0:54that they will be gathering facial scans and other biometric
- 0:57data from their Premium users or X Premium.
- 1:01And the purpose of this? They claim it's for safety,
- 1:04security and identification. OK, so it's premium.
- 1:09Subscribers will have the option to provide their government ID's
- 1:13along with a selfie for an extra layer of verification.
- 1:17And this biometric data could be extracted from both the
- 1:20identification and the selfie to match and confirm the identity
- 1:25of the user. And it doesn't end there though.
- 1:28The company also has plans to capture details like employment
- 1:31history, educational background, and other job related
- 1:35information. They suggest it's all to help
- 1:37recommend jobs to you and perhaps even share your
- 1:40credentials with prospective employers.
- 1:43And this also comes in the wake of Xcorps acquisition of tech
- 1:47recruiting service Lasky, since there might be a larger vision
- 1:52behind some seemingly unrelated updates now.
- 1:55Professor Liberty, veteran of Washington University in Saint
- 1:58Louis, pointed out that X is positioning itself to offer
- 2:02targeted and individualized experiences to roll platforms
- 2:06like LinkedIn. Yet she also cautioned that this
- 2:08move could potentially be misused by employers who could
- 2:11scrutinize your tweets, retweets, and you're following
- 2:15list to make judgments about job eligibility.
- 2:18Now doctor Stephanie Hair, a tech ethics researcher, framed
- 2:21it as a substantial data grab That's consent based.
- 2:25In her opinion, it doesn't significantly infringe upon
- 2:28civil liberty, since participation is optional now.
- 2:32Meanwhile, Elon Musk has also indicated plans for the platform
- 2:35to introduce video and audio calls, proclaiming that X aims
- 2:39to serve as an effective global address book.
- 2:42However, no official date has been enough for the release of
- 2:45this feature now. TikTok, on the other hand,
- 2:48another major player in social media already collects biometric
- 2:52date. But during a Senate hearing last
- 2:54year, they clarify that they do not use any facial, voice or
- 2:58audio recognition to identify individuals.
- 3:01What should we make of this? Are we seeing a trend where
- 3:03social media platforms are morphing into multipurpose
- 3:07everything apps, or is this merely a complex way to a mass
- 3:11more for targeted advertising and revenue generation?
- 3:16Steven Wicker, a data privacy expert from Cornell University
- 3:20who built this as an extension of existing practices.
- 3:23Wicker, emphasized that while the data collection might be a
- 3:26source of revenue for these companies, it raises serious
- 3:29questions about personal data security.
- 3:31We can't overlook that just last year, Facebook agreed to a $650
- 3:36million settlement over a similar data collection issue.
- 3:41Even beyond security, the collection of biometric and
- 3:44personal data opens up ethical cans of worms.
- 3:47While many are advocating for transparency and user consent,
- 3:50others are that the mere active data collection by these
- 3:53platforms could lead to unintended consequences and
- 3:56misuse. And with the new policies to be
- 3:59implemented on September 29th, it's essential to pay very close
- 4:04attention to how things unfold. Will this new data collection
- 4:08strategy push the boundaries of what we consider acceptable, or
- 4:12will it become another fleeting experiment in the ever changing
- 4:15world of the X Corp by Elon Musk?
- 4:19But it hasn't been smooth sailing recently for X Corp,
- 4:22especially after the change in branding from Twitter via
- 4:25strategist Eric Stouffert found a significant drop in app
- 4:29downloads post rebranding, going from an average ranking of 35 to
- 4:3354 on Apple's App Store's top downloaded chart.
- 4:38Sufra suggests that the shift might be causing confusion among
- 4:41customers who are not familiar with the rebranding efforts.
- 4:45The newer, darker, and less bird focused branding in the App
- 4:48Store further adds to this confusion, causing potential new
- 4:52users to miss what they're searching for now.
- 4:55Given Elon Musk's focused on revenue growth, these declining
- 4:58numbers might be of a concern. The business cannot expand
- 5:01without attracting new users, and these stats suggest that
- 5:04Xcorp has some ground to make up and the rebranding to X and the
- 5:09added features are a double edged sword for Musk.
- 5:11On one side, the additional services and the potential to
- 5:14become an everything app make the platform more intriguing,
- 5:18and on the other side, there's a real challenge in maintaining
- 5:21user trust in attracting a new audience amid these sweeping
- 5:25changes. Now let's touch on a little
- 5:27legal angle as well. X, even before its
- 5:30transformation, has been part of a class action lawsuit that
- 5:33alleges a platform of wrongfully capturing and storing biometric
- 5:37data without adequate user consent.
- 5:40Given the heightened focus on data collection, these legal
- 5:43challenges could become more prominent in the days to come.
- 5:46All right, that's all the time we have for today.
