- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 0:01Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 0:03Speaker 3: That's what he said, that's.
- 0:05Speaker 2: What he said. What do you guys think of Tony
- 0:11Speaker 2: Boutello's comments on a daily basis to the media and
- 0:14Speaker 2: how refreshing it is. I've seen some people ebsrating him
- 0:19Speaker 2: online like, oh, this guy's not going to last, and
- 0:22Speaker 2: then I've now seen a contingency online AJ that is
- 0:26Speaker 2: super pumped. I'm joining that contingency. I'm not rooting for
- 0:31Speaker 2: or against the Giants. I'm rooting for fun storylines to
- 0:35Speaker 2: cover and stuff that we can talk about on our show.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Tony Vtello is a walking sound bite. He was like
- 0:41Speaker 2: that at Tennessee. It's just that now he's on a
- 0:43Speaker 2: more national stage as he's in Major League Baseball. And
- 0:47Speaker 2: I mean, I know I mentioned this with Ken during
- 0:49Speaker 2: that segment, but you know he said last night and
- 0:52Speaker 2: then RAFFI I mentioned golf, you know, Tiger. I guess
- 0:55Speaker 2: bad timing. Like he he brings up somebody that's you know,
- 0:59Speaker 2: in music, another sport almost every day as part of
- 1:02Speaker 2: his verbiage to the media, and I think it's fun.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I mean, we do get a lot of coach speak
- 1:08Speaker 2: and cliches are you gonna agree or disagree with me
- 1:11Speaker 2: in terms of how he has said he's going to
- 1:14Speaker 2: be himself, and he is. Because some people are like, oh,
- 1:16Speaker 2: that he's just blabbing and he's changing the subject. I
- 1:19Speaker 2: mean Buck Show Walter used to do that and still
- 1:21Speaker 2: even does that sometimes on our show, where he'll like
- 1:23Speaker 2: take you on this winding road and you feel like
- 1:25Speaker 2: you know, you just I don't know, saw a jam
- 1:28Speaker 2: band for like five minutes and then forgot what you
- 1:30Speaker 2: were even there for. But what do you think.
- 1:34Speaker 4: I don't mind it. I just think that you have
- 1:35Speaker 4: to realize that you have to do the media three
- 1:37Speaker 4: times a day, so you can't always try to be
- 1:39Speaker 4: cute right right, Like you can't just always be cute
- 1:41Speaker 4: to them. Sometimes you have to say some stuff with substance,
- 1:44Speaker 4: like I'm fine with that this is the way he
- 1:46Speaker 4: wants to play the media. It doesn't bother me because
- 1:49Speaker 4: I don't have to deal with it on a daily basis.
- 1:51Speaker 4: And when I get to go do a Fox game
- 1:54Speaker 4: here coming in a couple of weeks with him, it's
- 1:55Speaker 4: gonna I'm gonna be interested to see how he handles it.
- 1:57Speaker 4: But he's never had to deal with this stuff, and
- 1:59Speaker 4: he's never had to answer questions again three times a day.
- 2:02Speaker 4: When you're a big league manager, you have to answer
- 2:04Speaker 4: questions three times a day, and that is a lot.
- 2:08Speaker 4: People don't realize how much that is until they have
- 2:10Speaker 4: to do it. And three times a day when you're
- 2:12Speaker 4: sitting there before a game, after a game sometimes you
- 2:14Speaker 4: know wherever he or they're everywhere. It's a lot. So
- 2:18Speaker 4: it's cool that he's trying to be like this and
- 2:20Speaker 4: he's trying to I don't want to say he's trying
- 2:22Speaker 4: to be cute, but he's trying to be himself.
- 2:23Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, you.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Know, it's three times a day, it's it's you got
- 2:27Speaker 4: to have some substance too.
- 2:30Speaker 1: There's there's been some managers that I've watched some of
- 2:33Speaker 1: their quotes and watched their interviews through the last few years,
- 2:38Speaker 1: like they seem fake. Tony Vitelo doesn't seem fake. It
- 2:42Speaker 1: seems like it's him. Now does that mean it connects
- 2:45Speaker 1: with everybody? Absolutely, it doesn't connect with everybody, Like there's
- 2:48Speaker 1: people who who want We had Joe West on the
- 2:51Speaker 1: other day and he was talking about Dick Williams, the manager,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and most people have no idea who he was, and
- 2:57Speaker 1: he was like, ah, it was hard nos. And it
- 2:59Speaker 1: was just like if a manager tries to create something,
- 3:03Speaker 1: tries to create a persona tries to create a clubhouse
- 3:06Speaker 1: that he thinks is supposed to be run a certain way.
- 3:11Speaker 1: He's cooked. You're gonna see through it. You can fake
- 3:14Speaker 1: your way through. You can fake your way through spring
- 3:17Speaker 1: training in the first few months, everything's all neat and shiny,
- 3:21Speaker 1: but the reality is the big league season's too long.
- 3:25Speaker 1: You can't put on a face, you can't try to
- 3:28Speaker 1: fake it with the local media. Like there there was
- 3:33Speaker 1: a manager close to where I live who came into
- 3:36Speaker 1: town and asked one of the local media people, said
- 3:40Speaker 1: where should I live? That would connect with the fans
- 3:43Speaker 1: the most, and the place where he chose to live
- 3:46Speaker 1: in the city that's near here wasn't at all. It
- 3:50Speaker 1: didn't connect with any of the Phillies fans, the Philly
- 3:52Speaker 1: blue collar fans who scrape together. They're sixty dollars to
- 3:56Speaker 1: come and watch the Phillies play, and they get behind
- 3:59Speaker 1: a team. Don't try, don't try to be fake. And
- 4:02Speaker 1: I think Tony Vitelo is not being fake. Is he
- 4:05Speaker 1: different than other managers. Absolutely, Buttello is genuine because I
- 4:11Speaker 1: and I say that because I don't really know him.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I say that because of hearing what Buster Posey has
- 4:16Speaker 1: said about him, hearing what Jace Tingler has said about him.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Guys that I respect, that I have played with, that
- 4:22Speaker 1: I have lived with in my career, that the way
- 4:26Speaker 1: they talk about him. So is it different than other people? Absolutely?
- 4:30Speaker 1: Is it genuine? Yes, And that's the only way it
- 4:33Speaker 1: works for him.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Hold that you had a coach who said, Oh, I'm
- 4:37Speaker 2: gonna live on Sylvester Street so I can tell the
- 4:41Speaker 2: people I'm with them. He chose his living based on that.
- 4:46Speaker 1: So brutal, so before he even found his place, Like
- 4:50Speaker 1: you can go through, you can go through the fakeness
- 4:52Speaker 1: of just it's just never gonna last. You're you're never
- 4:55Speaker 1: gonna have the genuine connection with your players. You're never
- 4:58Speaker 1: gonna have a genuine connection with the fans. And the
- 5:01Speaker 1: reason is because the media is sitting there going they're
- 5:04Speaker 1: holding there now. They all hold their phones up, they
- 5:06Speaker 1: know microphones, are holding their phone up and they're waiting
- 5:08Speaker 1: for you to say something because they know you're going
- 5:11Speaker 1: to have some kind of take about something. But they
- 5:15Speaker 1: don't ever connect with you because you're not really sure
- 5:18Speaker 1: if you're being honest with them.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Wow, I want to bring some strategy up. Let's run
- 5:27Speaker 2: back to back tweet tear Giants took down the Mets
- 5:31Speaker 2: last night. Manager of Vitello used Ryan Walker in the
- 5:36Speaker 2: sixth inning, and Susan Slesser tweeted it might be the
- 5:39Speaker 2: most high leverage situation of the game. That was his reasoning,
- 5:43Speaker 2: and he likened the extreme contrast between Robbie Ray and Walker,
- 5:48Speaker 2: making an interesting point that teams are often excited to
- 5:50Speaker 2: see a very good starter leave and seldom see a
- 5:54Speaker 2: closer type. Next and outside the box thought process there
- 5:58Speaker 2: and Alex Pavlovich, you also cover the team added on.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Tony Bytello said the staff talked before the game about
- 6:04Speaker 2: using Walker right after Ray, since they're pretty much opposite
- 6:07Speaker 2: looks left right, very different arm angles. He didn't want
- 6:10Speaker 2: the Mets to feel comfortable after getting Ray out of
- 6:12Speaker 2: the game. AJ, do you like this?
- 6:16Speaker 4: I mean, they won the game, so it worked, but
- 6:19Speaker 4: you also have to have a verified closer. At the
- 6:21Speaker 4: end of the game. You know, they were up seven
- 6:23Speaker 4: to two, so it was a little bit different. But
- 6:25Speaker 4: if it was a three to two game, and then
- 6:26Speaker 4: he's like, man, I really like to have my closer
- 6:28Speaker 4: guy back there in the back end. So yeah, do
- 6:30Speaker 4: I like this?
- 6:31Speaker 3: Sure?
- 6:31Speaker 4: But it's again, you know who really loved this was
- 6:33Speaker 4: a guy.
- 6:34Speaker 3: On a MLB.
- 6:37Speaker 4: You know network, Brian Kenney that he really loves this.
- 6:39Speaker 4: He's like, man, you should start the closer because that
- 6:41Speaker 4: are the toughest.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Three bats of the game.
- 6:43Speaker 4: But at some point, good teams have closers that they
- 6:45Speaker 4: use in closing situations. Does he not trust the other
- 6:48Speaker 4: guys in the seventh, sixth, seventh, eighth inning, yet he
- 6:51Speaker 4: has to go right to Walker, who's supposed to be
- 6:53Speaker 4: his closer. That's that's the only question I have.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I I didn't like it as much I liked it,
- 7:00Speaker 1: and I'm seeing it happen in the game when I
- 7:02Speaker 1: heard afterwards that they talked about before the game that
- 7:05Speaker 1: they were gonna they were gonna bring Walker in right
- 7:08Speaker 1: after Ray, I don't know. I And here's and here's
- 7:14Speaker 1: here's my gripe. And it's my gripe with people who say, well,
- 7:17Speaker 1: the closer should get the first three outs because the
- 7:19Speaker 1: first three hitters are the best hitters on the team
- 7:21Speaker 1: and now all of a sudden, the game is only
- 7:23Speaker 1: eight innings long. As a hitter, you get four at
- 7:27Speaker 1: bats in the game. This is why I'm kind of
- 7:29Speaker 1: against pinch hitting as liberally as some teams do, because
- 7:34Speaker 1: as you take those at bats, you get better. Now
- 7:37Speaker 1: would it be better to see all four at bats
- 7:39Speaker 1: against the same guy, Absolutely, you would have a much
- 7:41Speaker 1: better chance. I get that, But you get better as
- 7:45Speaker 1: the game goes on. Those at bats are different in
- 7:49Speaker 1: the seventh, eighth, and ninth inning than they are in
- 7:51Speaker 1: the first through sixth inning. So to me making decisions
- 7:56Speaker 1: before the game, and maybe they just said, hey, we'll
- 7:58Speaker 1: think about doing it, and say we're gonna do it,
- 8:02Speaker 1: because you have to think about who you're going to
- 8:04Speaker 1: bring in in certain situations when y comes out of
- 8:07Speaker 1: the game. But not, don't prescript things. Do not get
- 8:12Speaker 1: into prescripting things at work this time. But you have
- 8:16Speaker 1: to be able to read the game. And he has
- 8:18Speaker 1: a lot of really experienced big league coaches and managers
- 8:23Speaker 1: on his staff that I think will help him read
- 8:27Speaker 1: the game. Let's read the room. If you're winning three
- 8:31Speaker 1: to two, maybe it's a time you're winning five to two. Hey,
- 8:34Speaker 1: you know what this is in college. We can go
- 8:37Speaker 1: out and we can throw somebody out there who can
- 8:38Speaker 1: only give up one run and you're still winning by
- 8:41Speaker 1: two runs. Like it's you mitigate those games a little
- 8:44Speaker 1: bit differently. So just make sure we don't prescript what's
- 8:49Speaker 1: happening before the game actually is played out.
- 8:54Speaker 2: That's fair, right. You can have some ideas and some plans,
- 8:57Speaker 2: but then read what you're looking at, which is always important.
- 9:01Speaker 2: And hey, remembering this is still a new guy on
- 9:03Speaker 2: the scene. I think we've talked about this multiple times.
- 9:06Speaker 2: He's going to be watched way more than most other
- 9:10Speaker 2: new managers right now. But Blake view Terra microscope versus
- 9:13Speaker 2: Tony Vaitello right now is going to be a little
- 9:15Speaker 2: bit different.
- 9:16Speaker 1: But he's not making those decisions on his own. Like
- 9:18Speaker 1: I think sometimes fans go the manager what an idiot? Rarely,
- 9:24Speaker 1: the manager is not really the one. Like a good
- 9:26Speaker 1: bench coach. If you watch a game, a good bench
- 9:29Speaker 1: coach is rarely watching intently each pitch. A good bench
- 9:34Speaker 1: coach is seeing how things are flowing. They're they're just
- 9:38Speaker 1: seeing the flow of the game. They're seeing what a
- 9:39Speaker 1: pitcher's stuff looks like compared to the swings that the
- 9:43Speaker 1: hitters are taking and say, hey, you know what, we
- 9:45Speaker 1: have three hitters away. We got a lefty that's crushed
- 9:48Speaker 1: this guy. Historically, a manager makes the move, but and
- 9:54Speaker 1: he has to be on top of it. The bench
- 9:57Speaker 1: coach can't miss a beat because when the manager misses beat,
- 10:00Speaker 1: the bench coach or in Vytello's case, a lot of
- 10:04Speaker 1: the other coaches around them, they got to be They
- 10:06Speaker 1: got to be locked in. It's not like it's not
- 10:09Speaker 1: just well, you know what, I'm on the staff and
- 10:11Speaker 1: we'll see what happens. That's not my that's not my
- 10:14Speaker 1: area expertise. You know, everybody pitches in. The manager is
- 10:18Speaker 1: the one that gets the gets the blame when it
- 10:21Speaker 1: goes well. But he doesn't he doesn't stand on an
- 10:23Speaker 1: island and make all these decisions on his own.
- 10:27Speaker 2: All right, well said, Let's move to the next topic here,
- 10:29Speaker 2: and it's about the influx of extensions that have been
- 10:34Speaker 2: coming our way since the season started. Here's a tweet
- 10:37Speaker 2: from Buster Only about what he's seeing right now. Aja
- 10:43Speaker 2: Only not posey this time. There's the expectation among many
- 10:48Speaker 2: industry sources that the aggressiveness of some teams to sign
- 10:51Speaker 2: players will continue with the anticipation that if there is
- 10:55Speaker 2: a salary cap in the future, any deal signed before
- 10:58Speaker 2: December one might have to be grant bothered into the
- 11:00Speaker 2: next system smart too. Yeah to me, I get a
- 11:07Speaker 2: little bit of that. But for the most part, AJ,
- 11:10Speaker 2: we don't know what's going to happen. It's hard. I
- 11:13Speaker 2: know that teams have some insight and they can utilize
- 11:16Speaker 2: what their ownership is telling them as they'll be part
- 11:19Speaker 2: of the labor negotiations. But do you really think that's
- 11:23Speaker 2: what's leading to more signings, especially the younger guys right now.
- 11:26Speaker 4: No, they're trying to get good deals. They're trying to
- 11:29Speaker 4: get good deals.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, let's.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Be serious, they're not. I mean, yes, there's be a
- 11:34Speaker 4: piece of it. Yeah, but they're trying to get good deals.
- 11:37Speaker 4: They're trying to get value. They're not They're looking at
- 11:39Speaker 4: and saying, man, if we can get this guy for cheap,
- 11:41Speaker 4: we'll take him for cheap over someone we're gonna have
- 11:43Speaker 4: to pay way more to. This is a good business
- 11:47Speaker 4: play by the owners. I like it.
- 11:50Speaker 1: It maye come up with an idea probably completely off
- 11:53Speaker 1: topic of this, but what if what if they don't,
- 11:56Speaker 1: Because I don't think we're gonna get a salar cap. Like,
- 11:58Speaker 1: the salar CAP's not the answer.
- 12:00Speaker 3: I get it.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Major League Baseball's pushing it. They're getting their people who
- 12:04Speaker 1: think it's a great idea, fan blah blah blah, all
- 12:07Speaker 1: that stuff. But what if a team doesn't have to
- 12:10Speaker 1: pay the full luxury tax if you keep one of
- 12:14Speaker 1: your stars. So let's say you're one year from free
- 12:16Speaker 1: agency and now all of a sudden, you're making teams
- 12:21Speaker 1: pay top dollar for a guy who's gonna be a
- 12:23Speaker 1: free agent, but his salary does not go against the
- 12:28Speaker 1: soft salary cap that we already have. But if you
- 12:31Speaker 1: don't keep a guy, now you have some kind of
- 12:34Speaker 1: penalties at your floor.
- 12:41Speaker 2: It's the inside Scoop. It's presented by a game changer,
- 12:43Speaker 2: and Ken Rosenthal is joining us live on the field
- 12:46Speaker 2: in Cleveland for their home opener. Ken, great to see you,
- 12:49Speaker 2: and I'm going to start with the headliner, that is
- 12:53Speaker 2: Connor Griffin debut day. So what do you have for
- 12:55Speaker 2: us on that? And how do we like awkwardly mention
- 12:59Speaker 2: that he pretty much has an extension but they have
- 13:01Speaker 2: to wait to make it super official.
- 13:04Speaker 5: Well, it's interesting, Scott, I don't know that he totally
- 13:07Speaker 5: has an extension yet, but certainly in which like it's
- 13:11Speaker 5: going to happen. And yes, they have to wait until
- 13:14Speaker 5: at he makes his debut. Otherwise the Pirates cannot qualify
- 13:18Speaker 5: for the Prospect Promotion incentic pick, which they will get
- 13:22Speaker 5: if he wins reached me the year. They have to
- 13:24Speaker 5: vote it him in time to do that they'll get
- 13:26Speaker 5: a full year of service.
- 13:28Speaker 3: So that's one element of this. And I saw Eric.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Talking yesterday about how the Pirates de lead this simply
- 13:35Speaker 5: to get the excitement.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Around the home. Oden's ridiculous.
- 13:38Speaker 5: I would agree with Eric on that, and I know
- 13:41Speaker 5: their party line was, well, send him down.
- 13:44Speaker 3: We wanted him to relax a little bit. Okay, how
- 13:47Speaker 3: much can we relax and a leaking put away or whatever.
- 13:50Speaker 5: And then so in any case, the right thing has
- 13:53Speaker 5: happened here, and I opposed there were the Pirates did
- 13:56Speaker 5: with Faulse schemes.
- 13:57Speaker 3: If you remember, they didn't.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Get the draft pick because they brought him up too late,
- 14:01Speaker 5: and ultimately he got to pull your service anyway, because
- 14:04Speaker 5: they were Brookie of the Year. This will be a
- 14:06Speaker 5: better outcome for them, especially should they get that extension done,
- 14:10Speaker 5: which the entire industry pretty much expects to happen.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Ken, can anyone prove that they did this for the
- 14:17Speaker 4: reason of the extension? If he's how long do they
- 14:19Speaker 4: have to wait to announce this extension, because obviously there
- 14:22Speaker 4: are people that have already said, Hey, this extensions done.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Then they can't take their tweet back and say, oh no,
- 14:27Speaker 4: I rued it wrong.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Right?
- 14:29Speaker 4: But can MLB prove that this extension was done and
- 14:31Speaker 4: that's why he got called up?
- 14:34Speaker 3: I don't believe that will happen.
- 14:35Speaker 5: Maybe prove it somehow, Hey, Dave bud as long as
- 14:39Speaker 5: it's not signed and delivered before he makes his debut,
- 14:44Speaker 5: the pirates will be fine.
- 14:45Speaker 3: So we've seen this before Christian Panama last year. Is
- 14:48Speaker 3: an extension get agreed upon before he made his debut?
- 14:52Speaker 3: I would guess that it probably happened that way. So
- 14:55Speaker 3: they do this for a reason.
- 14:56Speaker 5: I'm not quite sure what the reason is actually why
- 14:59Speaker 5: you need to delay and extensions for PPI eligibility, But
- 15:03Speaker 5: that is the way the.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Rule currently has written. Maybe it changes in the next DBA.
- 15:08Speaker 1: All right, well, how about where does this debut rank
- 15:11Speaker 1: in the sense of, like, we're still in the hoopla.
- 15:13Speaker 1: You're an opening day in Cleveland, so there's still hoopla
- 15:16Speaker 1: around opening days, not home open I mean home openers
- 15:19Speaker 1: instead of opening day. But yesterday we had JJ Cooper
- 15:23Speaker 1: on and he said, this is possibly one of the
- 15:25Speaker 1: biggest debuts since Steven Strasburg. Where would you rank this
- 15:30Speaker 1: in the ones that you've seen in your time writing?
- 15:34Speaker 3: I would agree with JD that this is the big one.
- 15:36Speaker 5: And I remember vlad Judew's debut that was big two
- 15:39Speaker 5: in Toronto. And I'm sure I could think of a
- 15:41Speaker 5: number of others and not call victims of recency bias,
- 15:44Speaker 5: but this.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Is a really big deal and I've written it. Guys.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Other teams believe that from.
- 15:51Speaker 5: The standpoint of thirt plus value, that the Pirates have
- 15:55Speaker 5: the most valuable picture in the game. It's most teams
- 15:57Speaker 5: and the most valuable positioning player in the game in
- 16:00Speaker 5: Connor Griffin, even though Griffin has.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Yet to play a major League game.
- 16:05Speaker 5: And when you talk about surt plus value, what are
- 16:06Speaker 5: you talking about talking about salary? Of course, you're talking
- 16:09Speaker 5: about years of service, and for both these guys, even
- 16:13Speaker 5: those schemes, of course, that's a couple of years of service.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Now he's still an extremely valuable player and team to
- 16:18Speaker 5: see Griffin in much the same way.
- 16:21Speaker 3: They believe he's going to be.
- 16:22Speaker 5: One of the top shortstops in the game right.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Away, at least in terms of what are the able
- 16:28Speaker 3: to bring to this team.
- 16:29Speaker 5: If that happened, it's transformative for the franchise and it
- 16:33Speaker 5: would be really cool to sing.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Ken your recent article, you wrote teams under pressure? Were
- 16:38Speaker 4: the Pirates under pressure to call Connor Griffin? Were the
- 16:40Speaker 4: Pirates under pressure to win this year? And what are
- 16:43Speaker 4: the other teams that you think that are under pressure
- 16:46Speaker 4: to perform this year?
- 16:48Speaker 5: I don't know that I would say the Pirates are
- 16:50Speaker 5: under the same kind of pressure as say the Mets
- 16:52Speaker 5: right aja, It's different.
- 16:54Speaker 3: It's a different market. The New York teams are always
- 16:56Speaker 3: under pressure. Boston is a high intensity market. Philadelphia a
- 17:00Speaker 3: high and density market. And I wrote about the Giants.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Simply because they've hired by Tello, They've spent some money,
- 17:06Speaker 5: they've taken some risks, and yet they're coming off four
- 17:10Speaker 5: mediocre seasons in a row, and that's why, in my view,
- 17:13Speaker 5: they have to take a step forward here. The Pirates
- 17:16Speaker 5: are a little bit different in that they seem to
- 17:18Speaker 5: operate at times in their own universe, and their owners
- 17:22Speaker 5: certainly seems to operate at times in his own universe.
- 17:25Speaker 3: They have taken steps to threct that this year.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Remember they brought in a zoon, and they brought in
- 17:30Speaker 5: Brandon Loud, They've brought.
- 17:31Speaker 3: In Ryan O'Hearn. They have this tremendous young pitching staff.
- 17:36Speaker 5: So their ind is for the first time we're seeing
- 17:38Speaker 5: in a wild urgency there. And the promotion of Griffin
- 17:42Speaker 5: reflects that there was a certain extent, of course, to
- 17:44Speaker 5: be a promoted the week earlier, you would say that
- 17:46Speaker 5: was an even more origin act. But at least they
- 17:49Speaker 5: got to the right place here. And honestly, guys, I
- 17:51Speaker 5: saw someone poke this on next this morning. What was
- 17:55Speaker 5: the last time all of us were kind of excited
- 17:58Speaker 5: to watch the Pirates?
- 17:59Speaker 3: And I believe that is where we all are right now.
- 18:03Speaker 1: If we can go to Boston and their pressure talking
- 18:06Speaker 1: about how you know, maybe maybe maybe Cora and Breslo
- 18:10Speaker 1: are not necessarily under pressure to lose their jobs, but
- 18:14Speaker 1: is that fair when you talk about you just talked
- 18:16Speaker 1: about young teams and some of the young teams and
- 18:19Speaker 1: have you're talking to Boston team that has Carmell, Anthony,
- 18:23Speaker 1: Anthony Rum and Anthony is young. Marcela Meyers Young saidam
- 18:28Speaker 1: Raphaela william A Brad You all guys with.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Under three years of service time their youth.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Is that fair to have pressure in those types of
- 18:36Speaker 1: situation when you still have young guys learning in the
- 18:38Speaker 1: big leagues?
- 18:40Speaker 3: There all kinds of pressure, as you know.
- 18:43Speaker 5: And in the case of Boston, when I say, or
- 18:46Speaker 5: anyone said, there's pressure on that team, that's inherent to
- 18:50Speaker 5: the market. There's always pressure in Boston, and it's also
- 18:53Speaker 5: inherent to the way the ownership has operated over the
- 18:56Speaker 5: past several years. Remember what they did now they endeavors
- 19:00Speaker 5: to open up a spot for Bregman. Then they lost
- 19:03Speaker 5: Fregman in free agency and they never really replaced that's
- 19:07Speaker 5: veteran presence. Yes, they brought in Wilson Contraras, and he's
- 19:10Speaker 5: really good, no question.
- 19:12Speaker 3: But at the same time, it's not Gregmans, it's not Devers.
- 19:16Speaker 5: It's an older guy who is probably kind of starting to.
- 19:20Speaker 3: The client phase of his career.
- 19:22Speaker 5: So the pressure there is more from fans on ownership
- 19:27Speaker 5: and not necessarily on the young player. No, we can't
- 19:30Speaker 5: expect Roman Anthony to be David Ortiz, But in my opinion,
- 19:35Speaker 5: they're kind of asking him the franchise is to be
- 19:38Speaker 5: that kind of player, that kind of impact because of
- 19:41Speaker 5: what they put around him.
- 19:44Speaker 1: All Right, you talked about San Francisco and the pressure
- 19:46Speaker 1: in San Francisco. You also said about how they're essentially
- 19:50Speaker 1: a five hundred team in their last four years. Is
- 19:53Speaker 1: it I guess I keep saying is it fair? But
- 19:56Speaker 1: I mean pressure when you're in a big market. Is
- 19:58Speaker 1: what you're signing up for? Or is it more? Is
- 20:01Speaker 1: it a successful season for the Giants if they finish
- 20:04Speaker 1: at five hundred again where they have finished, even under
- 20:07Speaker 1: Tony Vaytello, who's learning to coach and manage one hundred
- 20:12Speaker 1: more games than he ever has with players that have
- 20:15Speaker 1: never even you know that he's never coached this type
- 20:18Speaker 1: of player before.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Yes, Eric, it depends how the season goes. But this
- 20:24Speaker 5: is the team that just fired a three time manager
- 20:26Speaker 5: of the Year because they finished five hundred. It's Bob Melbourne.
- 20:30Speaker 5: So clearly they're expecting more than five hundred. That's why
- 20:34Speaker 5: they hired Tony Bytello. So in my opinion, five hundred
- 20:38Speaker 5: will not be good enough. But I can't see how
- 20:40Speaker 5: the Giants can view it is good enough when they
- 20:42Speaker 5: made the nagerial change in part because of the way
- 20:45Speaker 5: they ended up last year. Now if they finished five
- 20:49Speaker 5: hundred because they had a series of injuries and ultimately
- 20:52Speaker 5: they made progress under by Tello, all good. And actually
- 20:56Speaker 5: I kind of like a couple of things I've seen
- 20:58Speaker 5: with by Tello this week.
- 21:00Speaker 3: He's stuck with.
- 21:00Speaker 6: Logan Web, when logan Web was struggling, he pulled them
- 21:03Speaker 6: only the other day, and then last night backing up
- 21:08Speaker 6: Robbie Ray with Walker, who was normally his closure.
- 21:11Speaker 5: I thought that was cool and that showed something. So
- 21:15Speaker 5: we obviously need to give him time to can evaluate
- 21:17Speaker 5: him at all. Well, yes, they definitely want to finish
- 21:21Speaker 5: above five hundred, and I don't know that they will
- 21:23Speaker 5: consider the five hundred of success.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Ken, you were just with Vitello the other day. What's
- 21:29Speaker 2: he been like now that he's in the big leagues,
- 21:32Speaker 2: Because I feel like I see a quote go viral
- 21:34Speaker 2: from him almost every day right now. He's brought up
- 21:37Speaker 2: Tiger Woods, he's brought up Kanye. I mean, he's like
- 21:40Speaker 2: a cultural phenomenon in some ways in our sport compared
- 21:44Speaker 2: to how most managers speak and relate to media and fans.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Do you agree, I would totally agree with that. He's
- 21:51Speaker 3: for us is a breath of fresh air. Now I'm
- 21:54Speaker 3: going to translate. Who knows.
- 21:56Speaker 5: And obviously you want your manager to be good with
- 21:59Speaker 5: the media.
- 22:00Speaker 3: That's one criteria that teams use when they hire them.
- 22:03Speaker 3: They want him to be able to communicate twice a
- 22:05Speaker 3: day with the media. But ultimately you need him to be.
- 22:10Speaker 5: The leader of the team and the leader in the
- 22:13Speaker 5: clubouts and all that. That's much more important than how
- 22:16Speaker 5: he speaks to the media. Now, there was a situation
- 22:19Speaker 5: early in the season when they went on too and
- 22:22Speaker 5: he said, hey, I gave him a fire and brimstone
- 22:24Speaker 5: speech right before the season started. I might have been
- 22:27Speaker 5: mistaken there, might have made them tight. And in that case,
- 22:31Speaker 5: it kind of went too far. And the players they
- 22:34Speaker 5: didn't roll their eyes to se but they basically did
- 22:37Speaker 5: let them roll into we're good. So he's going to
- 22:39Speaker 5: have his adjustments with that. But yes, Scott, for sure,
- 22:42Speaker 5: he has been quite quote of.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Us Ken, what about the Mets. Are the Mets? How
- 22:48Speaker 4: much pressure of the Mets? The Mets haven't exactly gone
- 22:50Speaker 4: off to a great start. Their offense hasn't been very
- 22:52Speaker 4: good at all, whether it's Sime and lindor whoever you
- 22:55Speaker 4: want to throw out there is not doing great. Their
- 22:58Speaker 4: pitching hasn't been great. What are the Mets feeling right now?
- 23:03Speaker 5: They're in a huge pressure and there's a lot of
- 23:05Speaker 5: different pressure points there. One on the new players to
- 23:08Speaker 5: perform with Chad Alanko all the guys.
- 23:10Speaker 3: That they brought in.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Two on the manager, Carlos Mendoza. They changed a lot
- 23:16Speaker 5: of coaches last off season, and usually that is the
- 23:18Speaker 5: precursor to a manager will change if things don't go well.
- 23:22Speaker 5: And then three, I'm David Stearns, the president of Baseball Operation,
- 23:26Speaker 5: because he was the architect of what they've done.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Now it's a week and I.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Saw somebody point out that they started three and three
- 23:34Speaker 5: in some of their better years and there's no way
- 23:36Speaker 5: to judge them right now. And in fact, I wrote
- 23:39Speaker 5: this and I believed it. I feel it might take
- 23:43Speaker 5: with this team a little bit more time to jail then.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Maybe other teams. They have so many new players, so
- 23:49Speaker 3: many new coaches.
- 23:50Speaker 5: There's a lot going on there and it just might
- 23:52Speaker 5: take them time to get comfortable with each other.
- 23:54Speaker 3: And just play to their potentials. So I'm not necessarily
- 23:58Speaker 3: surprised by this. I'm not necessarily sorry buy it. At
- 24:01Speaker 3: the same time, yeah, there's pressure, there's sure.
- 24:03Speaker 5: It's New York and it's a team that underachieved in
- 24:06Speaker 5: a massive way, almost a historic way, last off season,
- 24:10Speaker 5: last season.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Hey, Ken, let's finish with this because we're talking about
- 24:14Speaker 2: some teams with pressure after one week of the season.
- 24:16Speaker 2: How about a team that I don't feel like. We
- 24:18Speaker 2: talked about a ton heading into this season and they
- 24:22Speaker 2: were placed in you know, many predictions and power rankings,
- 24:24Speaker 2: kind of like mid range ish. The Houston Astros are
- 24:27Speaker 2: off to a five and two start. You're a Don
- 24:29Speaker 2: Alvarez looks very very good, pitching staff holding up the
- 24:32Speaker 2: whole deal. Haters not even back yet. I know Parates
- 24:35Speaker 2: doesn't have a full time spot with Painya coming back,
- 24:37Speaker 2: but that's some helpful depth. What do you think of
- 24:39Speaker 2: the first week of the astrospressive?
- 24:42Speaker 5: No question, Scott, And remember they lost their first two
- 24:45Speaker 5: to the Angels, and since then they've won five straight,
- 24:48Speaker 5: averaging almost nine runs per game.
- 24:49Speaker 3: So offensively they're in a really good spot.
- 24:52Speaker 5: Their rotation should be improved with Burrows and am I
- 24:56Speaker 5: and once Hater gets back, their bullpen will be in
- 24:58Speaker 5: a good place as well. So the biggest thing facing
- 25:02Speaker 5: that right now is the question of how Paradus fits
- 25:05Speaker 5: now that Jeremy Payne will be back to being an
- 25:08Speaker 5: everyday player. Remember, you've been kind of in and out
- 25:11Speaker 5: of the lineup while getting.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Rid getting the covered from that anger. So they're gonna
- 25:15Speaker 3: have to deal with that, no question.
- 25:16Speaker 5: And this is the team also with pressure because the
- 25:20Speaker 5: general manager and the manager Dana Brown and Joe.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Spada, both in the final years of their contracts. But
- 25:26Speaker 3: still the Astros, they have.
- 25:27Speaker 5: That incredible ethic about them, just the whole way they
- 25:31Speaker 5: go about it.
- 25:32Speaker 3: They know how to win. We've seen it year after
- 25:34Speaker 3: year after year.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Ken, Thank you, good stuff, Enjoy the home opener and
- 25:38Speaker 2: there and then what you have Cubs Guardians tomorrow on.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Fox Up, Guardians tomorrow on Fox Perfect.
- 25:46Speaker 2: We'll see you on there. Thanks Ken. Thanks, that's Ken
