- 0:00Speaker 1: And now, Effective Communication with Phil Zeller, CEO, Dale Carnegie
- 0:05Speaker 1: Southwest Michigan. So there I was just the other day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I'm in my car. I'm trying to drive home. I
- 0:13Speaker 2: can't get through town. I can't get through town. Now,
- 0:17Speaker 2: there was no huge disaster anywhere. It wasn't an act
- 0:22Speaker 2: of nature. It wasn't a tornado or hurricane or anything
- 0:25Speaker 2: like that. It wasn't that blown.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Out of perspective. It simply was road construction.
- 0:32Speaker 2: And I'm trying to drive into town and I got
- 0:34Speaker 2: to get through town to get to my house. It's
- 0:36Speaker 2: the end of a day and I can't get through.
- 0:38Speaker 2: So I go around to find a different direction.
- 0:42Speaker 1: And guess what? I run into more road construction.
- 0:45Speaker 2: And the second way I'm trying to get to town,
- 0:48Speaker 2: I can't get into town the second way. And you
- 0:51Speaker 2: know what? It's just how days go sometimes. You know,
- 0:54Speaker 2: it's the first one's the frustration. The second one is
- 0:57Speaker 2: even more irritating. And then the third time, I go
- 1:00Speaker 2: another direction and get it. And guess what? I hit
- 1:03Speaker 2: the trifecta. Road construction again. Three ways to get to town.
- 1:09Speaker 2: And every one of them was blocked off. Think about
- 1:15Speaker 2: that for a moment. You have those situations come up.
- 1:20Speaker 2: It's like, boom, you're on autopilot. You know how to
- 1:24Speaker 2: get home. You know you just want to go. You
- 1:26Speaker 2: know where you need to go. And then all of
- 1:28Speaker 2: a sudden it's like, whoa, what is this?
- 1:30Speaker 1: I'm getting blocked here. And then all of a sudden
- 1:32Speaker 1: it happens again. And a third time.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And you're thinking, what did I do to deserve this?
- 1:39Speaker 2: But the funny thing about it is the story ends well.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I did make it home. I found a way. It
- 1:45Speaker 2: took a little while. I had to be patient, had
- 1:47Speaker 2: to seek a little understanding, had to trust myself, had
- 1:50Speaker 2: to take myself off autopilot. I put myself into active
- 1:55Speaker 2: mode and actively understanding exactly where I'm at.
- 1:59Speaker 1: What are my options?
- 2:00Speaker 2: What can I do? What's safe? Do I got to
- 2:02Speaker 2: turn around? Where do I go from here? But I
- 2:04Speaker 2: started processing everything. But here's the beautiful thing, my friends.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I made it home.
- 2:09Speaker 2: And this is the key. Now you say, Phil, Effective communication.
- 2:14Speaker 2: What does this have to do with effective communication? Well,
- 2:17Speaker 2: let me share with you. It's just like giving a presentation.
- 2:21Speaker 2: This is so fundamental of giving a presentation. We have
- 2:28Speaker 2: to know where we want to end up. And the
- 2:31Speaker 2: only way you're going to know where you are going
- 2:34Speaker 2: to end up is if you know it like you
- 2:35Speaker 2: know the back of your hand. You have to know
- 2:38Speaker 2: how to get there. You have to be able to
- 2:40Speaker 2: overcome the obstacles. during that presentation.
- 2:46Speaker 1: It takes me to a time I was doing my
- 2:49Speaker 1: first ever TEDx talk. Oh, it was a glorious thing.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I had prepared. I was so prepared.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I was going to give a TEDx talk, my first
- 2:59Speaker 2: TEDx talk, and I thought this is going to be amazing.
- 3:03Speaker 2: How blessed am I that I have an opportunity to
- 3:05Speaker 2: share some wisdom with the world. And as I prepared
- 3:10Speaker 2: for my talk and got my notes together, my 20-minute presentation,
- 3:14Speaker 2: where was I going to take this crowd? What journey
- 3:17Speaker 2: was I going to take them on? And where was
- 3:19Speaker 2: I going to land the plane, as I've shared with
- 3:21Speaker 2: you before here on Effective Communication? And interestingly enough, like
- 3:27Speaker 2: all great plans, like me trying to get home the
- 3:29Speaker 2: other day, I walk out on that stage and I
- 3:32Speaker 2: look at my audience and I think to myself, oh,
- 3:38Speaker 2: Insert word there. Yes, panic took over. You see, I
- 3:43Speaker 2: had prepared my talk for an audience for the United
- 3:47Speaker 2: States of America. I realized that my talk was full
- 3:52Speaker 2: of examples specifically from my experience in the United States
- 3:55Speaker 2: of America. And as I looked at my audience, I
- 3:59Speaker 2: later found out that my audience was represented by 124
- 4:02Speaker 2: different nationalities. Literally, an international audience there for this TEDx conference.
- 4:13Speaker 2: And as I thought right there in front of that group,
- 4:18Speaker 2: oh my gosh, what am I going to do? Panic
- 4:21Speaker 2: could set in, but I didn't have time to panic.
- 4:23Speaker 2: I'm under the bright lights. I've got to deliver. As
- 4:27Speaker 2: my mother always said, she was in theater. She said,
- 4:29Speaker 2: this show must go on. So what I reminded myself
- 4:33Speaker 2: of that moment, I trusted myself. I spent my whole
- 4:35Speaker 2: life preparing to give this talk. One simple change, we
- 4:40Speaker 2: could make an education that would revolutionize learning in the world.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Oh, it was powerful. And my whole life has.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Been dedicated to understanding this and how we could make
- 4:51Speaker 2: this change, to change the way we develop people globally.
- 4:56Speaker 2: And I knew it, even though my examples were American-based.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I knew that I could tweak them to reach an
- 5:02Speaker 2: international audience.
- 5:04Speaker 1: So in that moment... I had to trust myself.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I had to trust myself that I could tweak.
- 5:09Speaker 1: It and go on. And you know what? 20 minutes later,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I had a cheering audience. They were giving me applause.
- 5:17Speaker 1: They were excited.
- 5:18Speaker 2: So the fundamental lesson, what's the takeaway for you today,
- 5:21Speaker 2: my friend?
- 5:22Speaker 1: Trust yourself. Think about it.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Spend your entire life knowing your material so well that
- 5:30Speaker 2: you feel you own it. And if you do that,
- 5:33Speaker 2: you will confidently give that presentation. Now go make it happen.
