- 0:00We're in the Old Testament book of Esther today, one of the two
- 0:03books of the Old Testament that's named after women.
- 0:05The king sent 7 eunuchs to fetch the queen and to have her put on
- 0:10her crown and parade for his guests so that everyone could
- 0:14admire and examine her beauty as one of his greatest treasures.
- 0:18And she declines. Her refusal erupted into anger
- 0:24and fear that all the women across the whole empire would no
- 0:26longer obey their demanding husbands.
- 0:29Now not only is she removed from her position as queen, but also
- 0:32the king sent a proclamation out to the province that every man
- 0:36should be ruler over his own household.
- 0:38In the Persian world, at least in the 5th century, a wife was
- 0:42confided in. They were used as a counselor.
- 0:45Their advice was followed. Esther is very hesitant.
- 0:49This could result in my death. So Esther grows in faith and
- 0:53courage. You know, she calls for a Jewish
- 0:55fast. It's three days and three
- 0:57nights, and she says no food or water.
- 1:01Even if they're marrying into the Gentile families, if they
- 1:04remain loyal to their heritage, God will bless them.
- 1:12Shalom. Welcome to Scripture Central.
- 1:15We're in the Old Testament book of Esther today, one of the two
- 1:19books in the Old Testament that's named after women.
- 1:21And I want to approach looking at these females, these
- 1:25handmaidens and harems and heroines, all of which we have
- 1:28today in this book and in the great abundance and Queens.
- 1:33I want to approach them as a means of looking for the
- 1:36Messiah. I'm part of the Scripture
- 1:38Central team that wants to build enduring faith in Jesus Christ,
- 1:42and I'm convinced that scriptures help us do that.
- 1:45I feel so much closer to my God when I am filled with an
- 1:49understanding of his words. And this is a very interesting
- 1:53book because scholars have not always accepted the book of
- 1:56Esther as part of Scripture. In fact, it, as you probably
- 2:00know, it lacks the name of God. It depicts A heroine marrying
- 2:03outside of the faith. You know there's no evidence of
- 2:06this heroine ever living the law of Moses.
- 2:09In fact there's evidence to the contrary and the books
- 2:12authorship are unknown so it's it's not always been accepted in
- 2:18the ancient texts. In fact, the Dead Sea Scrolls
- 2:21that record the scriptures at the time of the Lord and before
- 2:26don't even include this and neither does the Islamic Canon.
- 2:30Yet the Christian story includes Esther story because it provides
- 2:35examples of God watching over the Jewish people wherever they
- 2:40are in their exile and today. The book of Esther in is
- 2:45included in our Christian Bibles as well as in the Hebrew Bible.
- 2:49The book comes at a time where the Israelites or the southern
- 2:54tribes have been in Babylon now for decades and decades.
- 3:00And it describes Esther as a cooperative, obedient heroine.
- 3:04You know, she's living in the Persian Empire.
- 3:06It's the late 5th century, and her ancestry is traced back to
- 3:10the tribe of Benjamin and then, which was the same as King Saul,
- 3:14as if you recall. And it's also the same, by the
- 3:17way, that the Apostle Paul, when we come to the future, she is
- 3:22referred to as a Jewish in chapter 2, verse five to seven,
- 3:26because everyone in the southern tribes were.
- 3:29But I think it's significant that she is one of these that
- 3:34are not from the tribe of Judah. The book describes about a
- 3:38decade of her life, starting when she's orphaned and then
- 3:42she's adopted by her cousin or uncle or some relationship.
- 3:45The word kin is not clear in the Hebrew text, and to know exactly
- 3:50which one we're talking about here.
- 3:51But she's raised in the Diaspora and they're clear down South of
- 3:55Babylon in the city known as Shua, or sometimes it's
- 3:59pronounced Shushan. But it's it's just north of the
- 4:04Persian Sea where the tigress and Euphrates come together in
- 4:07the South. It's been a almost a century of
- 4:10Babylonian captivity. Some of the Jews have already
- 4:13returned. In fact, many of have returned
- 4:16by the time we hear her story, and as we begin, we're told that
- 4:22Persia is being run by a king and queen with a large harem.
- 4:27But this Queen Vashti is a heroine for modern women, but
- 4:33was an absolute embarrassment for ancient women.
- 4:37So from a modern perspective, sometimes we honor her
- 4:40assertiveness, her respectability, but she was
- 4:45really looked down upon by her husband.
- 4:49King Ashur's is Hebrew and King Xerxes in Greek.
- 4:54Her story addresses this male female expectations of the
- 4:57ancient world. I think it's very healthy for us
- 5:00to go back and look at what it was like because she refuses to
- 5:04be treated like a sex symbol, at least in this one setting or as
- 5:09a slave in her position as a queen and she assertedly
- 5:14defended herself worth. You know, her outcome is
- 5:17actually tragic. It's the loss of her position.
- 5:20She's removed as being queen, and it was thought of in that
- 5:24day as a horrific breach of social propriety.
- 5:28But now we look at her as perhaps she chose the better
- 5:32alternative. So the book of Esther mixes up a
- 5:35few historical facts, and sometimes they say Persia not
- 5:38the Medes, and the Medes not the Persians.
- 5:41I The historical facts are clear that we have some overlapping in
- 5:46these empires, but I'm just going to suggests that that is
- 5:51for a different story. I want to focus on these women
- 5:54role with the savior. So I'm going to just look at the
- 5:57third year of King Ashuris or King Xerxes as he's reigning
- 6:02from 485. Vashti would have been very
- 6:06involved and very aware of the King's 180 day display of the
- 6:12vast treasures of wealth that he is now accumulated since he has
- 6:16conquered the Babylonians and built his Kingdom even greater.
- 6:20This is chapter 4. So it's 180 days where he's
- 6:23inviting all the foreigners to come in and see.
- 6:25It's a drinking and a celebratory time.
- 6:29And, and for this 6th month exhibit at the end of it, he has
- 6:33a week long drinking banquet for all the nobles from 127
- 6:38provinces and it stretches all the way from India to Ethiopia
- 6:43to the Balkans. It's an enormous I've got a map
- 6:46here on my slides if you'd like to take a look at it.
- 6:49And the problem arose because at the same time that the men are
- 6:52having their week long party, Vashti invites the women and she
- 6:59hosts a celebration of the female Gentry.
- 7:01This is verse 9 in chapter 1 and on the 7th day when I assume the
- 7:06men are quite tipsy if not completely smashed, that's the
- 7:10king sent 7 eunuchs to fetch the queen and to have her put on her
- 7:14crown and parade for his guests so that everyone could admire
- 7:18and examine her beauty as one of his greatest treasures.
- 7:22And she declines. Now, I don't know if it's just
- 7:25like a woman's night out or whatever the however her party
- 7:29is running, she wants to not go in front of that group of men.
- 7:34But her refusal erupted into anger and fear that all the
- 7:39women across the whole empire would no longer obey their
- 7:42demanding husbands. Now, not only is she removed
- 7:44from her position as queen, but also the king sent a
- 7:47proclamation out to the province that every man should be ruler
- 7:51over his own household. That's the NIV translation of
- 7:54verse 22. This opens up, of course, the
- 7:56search for the new queen that we'll talk about in a little
- 7:59while. But I also want to talk about
- 8:01how these verses were discussed in other ancient texts because
- 8:06the account exposes this marital culture of the day in this
- 8:10ancient world of Persia, and then how it works out with the
- 8:16Israelites as well. So years and years later, the
- 8:19Talmud embellished on this story of Queen Vashti, and it says
- 8:24that Queen Vashti was called to appear at this male banquet
- 8:28wearing only her crown, that she was going to be completely nude.
- 8:33Now, I don't know if this is just hundreds and hundreds of
- 8:36years later adding on for shock appeal or, or what, but
- 8:41according to the Hagana Queen, Vashti's modesty prohibited her
- 8:46from accepting the summons. Now, an opposite tradition from
- 8:51the Babylonian rabbis claim that Vashti was an adulterous woman
- 8:56and she mistreated her Jewish servants and she regularly
- 8:59flaunted her nakedness to groups of admirers.
- 9:02You know, so we have different writings centuries later arguing
- 9:06different parts of the story, but they claim that she refused
- 9:09the invitation. Everyone agrees on that.
- 9:11So these advisors to the king say if you don't do something
- 9:14immediately, all the noble ladies throughout the vast
- 9:18Persian Empire are going to hold on to Queen Vashti's refusal and
- 9:23follow her example and defy their husbands.
- 9:27So the men panic. The king goes ahead and carries
- 9:30out this and broadcast that Vashti's act was so repulsive
- 9:36that she is now removed from the throne and that we are going to
- 9:39look throughout the whole empire to find a replacement.
- 9:42Now he already has an enormous harem. 1 text said we probably
- 9:47had 365 wives, one for every night.
- 9:50The numbers are to me very hyperbolic, but Solomon says he
- 9:54had 1000 and the Persian supposedly had far more than
- 9:59that. But likely it inspired a very
- 10:04interested audience in this story.
- 10:06Now these women became unwittingly participants in
- 10:09God's larger plan. You know, we see as Vashti is
- 10:12removed, the Lord is making a way for a young Jewish girl
- 10:16named Esther to become the queen and eventually save the Jewish
- 10:19people. It's it's wonderful to see how
- 10:22the Lord puts things in motion. But as a young Jewish girl who's
- 10:27now orphaned, she's obediently following the vice of her uncle
- 10:31or relative Mordecai, and she prepares herself to possibly be
- 10:37considered as one of the kings harem and hopes of replacing the
- 10:42banished wife Vashti. Now Mordecai encourages Esther
- 10:46to keep her lineage a secret. Don't tell anyone yet that you
- 10:51are one of these refugees from Israel.
- 10:54But her differences were obviously appealing.
- 10:56She becomes very good friends with the eunuch who's in charge,
- 11:00and the other girls in the harem honor her, at least according to
- 11:04the text. She's she's really admired by
- 11:08the others there. So as Esther and these hundreds
- 11:11of other women arrive in the King's harem, he's already got
- 11:14concubines and and wives, but he wanted something more.
- 11:19So they all come in, and whether you're a legal wife or a consort
- 11:25or a royal daughter, they're all part of this enormous harem.
- 11:30So the number of women had to be organized in hierarchies.
- 11:35And there's an enormous social hierarchy with the mother queen
- 11:40as the top of the harem. And there's a number of eunuchs
- 11:45also involved. These men, you know, Daniel
- 11:48Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were taken captive and made
- 11:52eunuchs to serve in the court. You don't want anyone who might
- 11:56be sleeping with the harem. So you you castrate them.
- 11:59It was, it was terrible. But as as Esther comes in to
- 12:04this extremely large harem, you know it's probably comprising
- 12:10hundreds if not thousands of women.
- 12:11The text emphasizes that Esther was obtained favor and kindness
- 12:16in the sight of of all more than all the other virgins.
- 12:21And it also says that they spend 6 months with just oil of Mer
- 12:25and then six months with sweet perfumes.
- 12:27You know, it's a whole year of of changing and smelling and and
- 12:33and learning the manners and the clothing.
- 12:35And we're told that Esther received 7 servants or seven
- 12:38maidens. They're specifically chosen by
- 12:41the keeper of the women, this one of the eunuchs.
- 12:43Hey, guy. They become such dear friends
- 12:45that even when Esther becomes queen, she keeps these 7 maids
- 12:49with her as her friends. They serve as messengers.
- 12:53They bring her the disturbing news about Mordecai sitting
- 12:57outside in sackcloth that happens in chapter 4.
- 13:00You know, these maidens join her in her three day fast for his,
- 13:04for her people. Now, I don't know if they were
- 13:06Jewish girls. They may have been, but their
- 13:09willingness to fast really is remarkable.
- 13:12It speaks highly of their relationship, even if they were
- 13:14not Israelite by birth. But they knew of Esther's Jewish
- 13:19identity, even if Esther chose not to expose this dangerous
- 13:24time and outpouring of her birthright.
- 13:27Now there's a parallel plot going on to the women's plot
- 13:30here where the King's Prime Minister and that a man named
- 13:34Haman, he's is seeking for more power, more authority, and he to
- 13:39destroy all the Jewish people in the land.
- 13:42But Ezra's uncle or cousin Mordecai attempts to thwart him
- 13:47multiple times, including asking his ward, the little Princess
- 13:54Esther, to appeal for the king for help.
- 13:57This is Esther chapter 4. Now initially, Esther is very
- 14:01hesitant. And she says, I feel absolutely
- 14:04helpless. You know, I can't go unless the
- 14:06king is son summoning me. It's very risky.
- 14:08You know, I this could result in my death.
- 14:11And Esther feels completely powerless, like many of the
- 14:14women in the harem. But it made her relatable as a
- 14:20model to the other Jewish girls, and I think that's one reason
- 14:25why, her story continued. They felt similarly vulnerable
- 14:29in their exiled state. We're told that Hayman's wife is
- 14:33part of the problem as well. Her name is Suresh, and she,
- 14:38because he has such a high position with the king, she also
- 14:42would be very honored in that community.
- 14:45And the Bible describes that when Haman is furious at this
- 14:49Mordecai and he's sharing it with his wife, his wife comes up
- 14:51with a plan and his wife says, oh, you ought to just build a
- 14:55great big Gallo and get rid of him.
- 14:56You know, in fact, she not only is helping devise this plan to
- 15:01eliminate Mordecai, but then she will be, unfortunately, her life
- 15:07will be taken by this 75 foot gallows as well because both
- 15:11Mordecai is killed and those that were involved in this plot.
- 15:15Once Esther is able to come out. I think it's interesting to note
- 15:20that in the Persian world, at least in the 5th century, a wife
- 15:24was confided in. They were used as a counselor,
- 15:27their advice was followed and they were held responsible for
- 15:32some of the decisions that their husband made, especially when
- 15:35they had a voice in it. We don't don't always see that
- 15:38400 years later at the time of the New Testament, and we didn't
- 15:41always see it a 400 years before in the Old Testament.
- 15:45So this is an interesting time when the women's voices are
- 15:48being heard. I want to talk for just a minute
- 15:50about why Esther feels powerless.
- 15:54Look back at her history. Remember she's she's a young
- 15:57Israelite coming from a group of Jewish refugees in a foreign
- 16:01nation. She's an underling.
- 16:03They're sold into servitude. They've been there long enough
- 16:06that maybe things are a little bit better.
- 16:07But she's still a second hand citizen.
- 16:11And she also, as a woman in a very patriarchal society, is to
- 16:16obey what she's told to do. And they are raised differently.
- 16:20But Mordecai her uncle, persuades her to step up and
- 16:26help by saying, Think not that with thyself, that thou shalt
- 16:32escape the King's house more than all the other Jews.
- 16:37And then he skips down a little bit to verse 14 and chapter 4.
- 16:40Who knoweth wherefore that thou art come to the Kingdom for such
- 16:45a time as this. You know who knows maybe the
- 16:48Lord opened this door for this very event that you need to
- 16:52stand up and protect your nation.
- 16:55So Esther grows in faith and courage.
- 16:58You know she calls for a Jewish fast.
- 17:00It's three days and three nights and she says no food or water.
- 17:04I don't know if that's added by later editor or if it it that is
- 17:08a long time without water. Unbelievable.
- 17:11But she desperately needs God's divine help, not just to help
- 17:16her, but to help their entire, entire people.
- 17:18And she needs to go before the king.
- 17:21And so she says in verse 16, she's resolved If I perish, I
- 17:26perish. So they gab the fast.
- 17:29Her maidens join with her in the fast, her people join with her.
- 17:32She approaches the king and God answers their collective
- 17:36prayers. The king is softened and you're
- 17:39she says, I don't even know I'm not allowed to ever go before
- 17:42him. And if I do go before him, if he
- 17:43doesn't send down his royal scepter, then I'm, I'm toast.
- 17:47Well, he does. He sends it down and he says,
- 17:50what would you like? And then he says in in chapter
- 17:535, I'll give you a half of the Kingdom.
- 17:56You know, he he was completely, completely humbled and and
- 18:00willing to talk to his one of his wives.
- 18:02So she did not address the urgent issue at that point.
- 18:07She wanted to prepare a first banquet.
- 18:10And then she invites him and says, would you please come to a
- 18:14second background with just the king and Haman?
- 18:17This is chapter 5, verse 3 and to 8.
- 18:20And her hesitation in this face of great personal risk is very
- 18:25genuine. But it may have been part of
- 18:28this plan to create a setting where the king was more invested
- 18:32to hear what she really wanted. I, I don't know, I there may
- 18:37have been method to her madness here.
- 18:40But she at last confesses in this second banquet to the king.
- 18:44I thought maybe she needed a banquet after fasting 3 days.
- 18:47She was starving, you know. But she says at last quote, If I
- 18:52found favor in thy sight, let my life be given to me at my
- 18:57petition, and my people at my request.
- 19:01For we are sold, I and my people to be destroyed, to be slain, to
- 19:05be to perish. This is now Chapter 7, verse 3
- 19:08through 4. And the king, you know, ardently
- 19:11defends Esther and, and, and he finds out that Hammond's the
- 19:15problem. Hammond pleads for help, and
- 19:19that gets him in worse trouble because he falls on her on her
- 19:21couch or her pillows or something.
- 19:23And so the king is furious. And the same gallows that he
- 19:29built for Mordecai, now Haman and his family are going to be
- 19:33destroyed on, as I mentioned earlier.
- 19:35But Esther's triumphal success gave hope to these exiled Jews.
- 19:40And the book of Esther assures these exiled Jews that even if
- 19:44they're living among the Gentiles, even if they're
- 19:46marrying into the Gentile families, if they remain loyal
- 19:50to their heritage, God will bless them.
- 19:53You know, she is a story of a very young woman who sacrificed.
- 20:00She offers herself. Remember, you're usually married
- 20:03in your very early teens, if not before.
- 20:06And her story is one that shows her inner beauty as well as her
- 20:12outer beauty. You know her, her greatest
- 20:15beauty is not the riches in a royal position.
- 20:17You know, her greatest beauty is that her testimony and her faith
- 20:23in our God allowed her to gain the courage to be in a place and
- 20:28a time to save her people. And I believe that every one of
- 20:33us in our lives can stand as a ambassador for Jesus Christ at a
- 20:43great risk to our own personal stance, but to bless not just
- 20:49those around us, but the Kingdom of God grow in this earth.
- 20:53And may we all have the courage of Esther and the Spirit of God
- 20:58that allows us to build the Kingdom.
- 21:00I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
