- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Hi there.
- 0:15Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:19course.
- 0:20Check it out at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:27It was a dull, rainy morning.
- 0:32My alarm went off, and inwardly I just
- 0:35groaned.
- 0:35I tried not to groan too loudly so
- 0:37I wouldn't wake up Katie.
- 0:39I shuffled through my morning routine, breakfast, shower,
- 0:42maybe taking some vitamin D pills because it
- 0:44was a rainy day, drove down to the
- 0:47mortgage company, booted up my computer, and while
- 0:50it was booting up, I just looked out
- 0:51the window at the rain coming down.
- 0:53I just thought, like, that is me today.
- 0:56I've got rain on the inside, too.
- 1:00And a co-worker said, oh, hi, good
- 1:02morning, Chris.
- 1:03And I kind of missed a beat, and
- 1:04I was like, oh, yeah, hi, hi.
- 1:06And just had that little awkward moment of,
- 1:08like, oh, hi.
- 1:09I just missed, like, a very basic social
- 1:10cue, you know, because I was so mentally
- 1:12distracted and in such a funk.
- 1:15And I just had this sense of, like,
- 1:17that's not who I want to be.
- 1:19I don't want to be the kind of
- 1:20person who can't say good morning naturally to
- 1:25somebody else.
- 1:25I want out of this rainy day experience
- 1:28that I'm having.
- 1:30There was a lot going on for me
- 1:32in that moment.
- 1:34Part of what was going on, as I
- 1:35now understand, is I was experiencing depression, and
- 1:37I already had some things helping me, like,
- 1:39I knew to take my vitamin D pills,
- 1:41but since then I've gotten better treatment, better
- 1:43medication, and I handle rainy days a lot
- 1:45differently now with those helps that I didn't
- 1:47have at the time.
- 1:49And looking backwards at myself on that rainy
- 1:51day, I have a lot of compassion for
- 1:52that, Chris.
- 1:53I'm like, you didn't even have good medication.
- 1:56You're dealing with depression.
- 1:58Of course, you're gonna miss some social cues
- 1:59sometime.
- 2:00Like, that is not all on you.
- 2:01Like, you're okay, man.
- 2:03You're gonna make it.
- 2:04I want to time travel and just be
- 2:05like, hang in there, man, and maybe also
- 2:07check out Prozac a couple years earlier.
- 2:10But in the moment, it didn't feel like
- 2:12that.
- 2:13In the moment, it felt like shame.
- 2:15In the moment, it felt like I'm just
- 2:16not who I want to be.
- 2:18Now, the obvious implication is there is a
- 2:21version of myself that I want to be.
- 2:24I think for all of us, we have
- 2:26a deep longing to be a certain kind
- 2:28of person, a certain version of ourselves, someone
- 2:31who's whole, someone who's healthy.
- 2:35And because I'm a disciple of Jesus, that
- 2:37longing to be a certain kind of myself,
- 2:41a certain version of myself, is inextricably intertwined
- 2:45with my desire to follow Jesus.
- 2:47My sense of, I want to be like
- 2:49him.
- 2:50I want to be the kind of human
- 2:51being that Jesus was and is.
- 2:54If that's possible, I want to be that
- 2:56version of myself.
- 3:00And that longing to become a kind of
- 3:02specific version of ourselves leads us to a
- 3:05kind of paradox, right?
- 3:07And it's a paradox that I've been on
- 3:08both sides of, definitely, in my life.
- 3:11And that's, how can we both aspire to
- 3:13something specific without always beating ourselves up and
- 3:18being motivated by shame, right?
- 3:21Like when we're in a moment of depression,
- 3:24for example, it's not really helpful to beat
- 3:27yourself up about it.
- 3:28It's not really helpful to say like, I
- 3:29just got to pull myself together and do
- 3:31the right thing.
- 3:32And that's often been my approach for a
- 3:34long time before I got guidance and better
- 3:36counseling and better treatment.
- 3:37That was my approach, just white knuckle it.
- 3:39Try and will yourself to do what you
- 3:42know is right, regardless of how you feel.
- 3:45And the tough thing is, it's like sometimes
- 3:47you just don't have it.
- 3:49Sometimes your will just runs out.
- 3:51And then what do you do?
- 3:53The other side of the paradox, though, is
- 3:55a kind of therapeutic, so to speak, approach
- 3:58that actually does not allow for any kind
- 4:02of genuine self-critique.
- 4:04So somebody who has a poor performance review
- 4:08at work and they go home and they
- 4:11just say their affirmations to themselves.
- 4:12Like even though you had this poor performance
- 4:14review, like, you are awesome, you rock, you're
- 4:17amazing, right?
- 4:17This is a practice, a mental health practice
- 4:19that some people have of like affirming themselves.
- 4:22And if their performance was deeply attached to
- 4:25their sense of self-worth, then yeah, like
- 4:27creating some space there between your sense of
- 4:29self-worth and your sense of performance is
- 4:31really important.
- 4:31Like, yes, your intrinsic value as a human
- 4:33being totally unaffected by this poor performance at
- 4:37work.
- 4:37Amen.
- 4:38And that can be really hard to believe.
- 4:40So that's something to lean into and to
- 4:41use practices for.
- 4:42But if you stop there and then you
- 4:44just like ignore everything in the performance review,
- 4:47you're unwilling to try and grow in the
- 4:49areas that the performance review identified.
- 4:51Like if it was fair and it was
- 4:52well done, it's like this is an area
- 4:53of growth for you.
- 4:54That's not healthy either.
- 4:56I'm happy where I am and I don't
- 4:58need to grow.
- 4:58I don't need to change.
- 4:59I'm good.
- 5:00We know intuitively, like that's not what human
- 5:03beings are meant to do either.
- 5:03Human beings are dynamic.
- 5:05We're meant to develop.
- 5:06We're meant to struggle with the darkness, even
- 5:08the darkness in ourselves and somehow triumph over
- 5:11it and get through to something better and
- 5:14more beautiful over time.
- 5:16Okay, so how do we do that?
- 5:19How do we both aim for a better,
- 5:21more beautiful version of ourselves but not do
- 5:24that in a way that's really rooted in
- 5:27shame and self-condemnation and ends up doing
- 5:29more harm than good?
- 5:30How do we both have self-acceptance and
- 5:33a radical commitment to growth and change over
- 5:35time?
- 5:37And specifically in the Christian world, this could
- 5:39be phrased like this.
- 5:41How can I become a better Christian without
- 5:43becoming a worse human being?
- 5:46Because sometimes, that white-knuckling version of it,
- 5:48you can apply that to the idea of
- 5:50what's called sanctification or spiritual growth.
- 5:53Like, I am just gonna force myself to
- 5:55be more like Jesus.
- 5:56Yes!
- 5:58And in the process, you find that you're
- 6:00getting impatient with people and you're angry and
- 6:03you aren't able to be gentle and it's
- 6:05like you actually, even in your attempt to
- 6:08white-knuckle your way towards being like Jesus,
- 6:10you're becoming less and less like Jesus.
- 6:12You're becoming less of the human being that
- 6:14Jesus intends for you to be.
- 6:16So, how do we become better Christians without
- 6:19becoming worse human beings?
- 6:22If Jesus' vision for our life makes any
- 6:24sense at all, somehow becoming a better Christian
- 6:26has got to go hand-in-hand with
- 6:27becoming a better human being.
- 6:30Okay, so this is the paradox.
- 6:33This is the two sides that we're going
- 6:34to try and look at together in this
- 6:36new series that we're launching with this episode.
- 6:39So, the new series is called, Wholehearted Becoming
- 6:42Healthier Christians at Work.
- 6:46Now, right there even in the title, right,
- 6:47Becoming Healthier Christians at Work, I've tried to
- 6:50capture that paradox that like we're trying to
- 6:53be Christians, we're trying to become more like
- 6:54Jesus, but we're trying to do that in
- 6:56a healthy way.
- 6:57So, one way we could think about this
- 6:58is like a Venn diagram.
- 7:00On the left side of the Venn diagram,
- 7:01we've got spiritual growth, Bible and theology, spiritual
- 7:06practices, all those good things that kind of
- 7:08help us understand what it means to follow
- 7:09Jesus.
- 7:10And then on the right side of the
- 7:12Venn diagram, we've got mental health, psychological research,
- 7:16insights from the social sciences, things that can
- 7:18help us learn what it means to be
- 7:19a healthy human being.
- 7:21And so, this series is an attempt to
- 7:23kind of hit that intersection place of the
- 7:25Venn diagram and say, how can we become
- 7:29healthier Christians at work?
- 7:31How can we become more whole and more
- 7:34healthy all the way around in a way
- 7:36that's part of our life with God and
- 7:38in a way that takes the realities of
- 7:40mental health seriously?
- 7:42Okay, so the structure of this series is
- 7:44going to be those two sections as well.
- 7:46So, we're going to start on that left
- 7:47hand side.
- 7:48We're going to start with what we could
- 7:49call theological anthropology.
- 7:51So, that's the nerdy phrase for it.
- 7:53A way that might be easier to think
- 7:55of it is that Jesus is an anthropologist.
- 7:57Jesus has things to say about humanity.
- 8:00And so, this is something that philosophers and
- 8:03others have explored for centuries, right?
- 8:05Confucius had ideas about human nature.
- 8:06Aristotle and Plato had ideas about human nature.
- 8:09The Islamic philosophers of the Middle Ages had
- 8:11ideas about human nature.
- 8:12The Enlightenment philosophers had ideas about human nature.
- 8:15Well, Jesus also has specific ideas about human
- 8:18nature and we can go read them in
- 8:20the New Testament.
- 8:20And that's really helpful.
- 8:22So, if we're students of Jesus, we're letting
- 8:23Jesus be our anthropologist or letting Jesus tell
- 8:26us how humanity works.
- 8:28And so, we're going to kind of come
- 8:30back to that just a little bit at
- 8:32the end of this episode and look at
- 8:35a specific passage where Jesus lays that out.
- 8:37But that's kind of the first chunk of
- 8:40this podcast series is going to be a
- 8:42theological anthropology.
- 8:43A vision of what it means to be
- 8:45human that comes out of the Bible, out
- 8:48of good Christian theology, out of the teaching
- 8:50of Jesus himself.
- 8:53In case you really like knowing what's coming,
- 8:55we're going to have seven subparts to that
- 8:58part.
- 8:59Seven subparts to the Theological Anthropology section.
- 9:01So, we're going to look at our thoughts,
- 9:04our feelings, our will or heart, our body,
- 9:08and then our soul in three different ways.
- 9:10So, our soul as a relater, our soul
- 9:12as an integrator, and our soul as a
- 9:14receiver.
- 9:16Okay, you don't need to remember that.
- 9:17We'll go one step at a time through
- 9:18the series.
- 9:20Now, the right hand side of the Venn
- 9:22diagram, that mental health side, we're going to
- 9:23look at that in the second half of
- 9:25the series and we're going to look specifically
- 9:26at different mental health challenges.
- 9:28So, we're going to look at depression and
- 9:30anxiety, both of which I can speak to
- 9:32from personal experience, and then we're going to
- 9:34draw on other people's experiences and good Christian
- 9:37psychologists and other researchers and talk about also
- 9:40trauma, addiction, and neurodiversity.
- 9:45Okay, so this is probably the most ambitious
- 9:47podcast series we've done yet.
- 9:49We're trying to cover a lot of ground
- 9:51in terms of the depth and breadth of
- 9:53what we're doing, but to me it feels
- 9:55necessary to look at all of these topics.
- 9:57Because for me, even on just one single
- 10:00day of work, I have thoughts, I have
- 10:03feelings, I have a will and choices that
- 10:05I'm making, I have my body and whatever
- 10:06I'm going through, I have my soul and
- 10:08how it's relating and integrating and receiving or
- 10:10not in a given moment, and I'm dealing
- 10:13with my own depression, and sometimes my own
- 10:15anxiety, and other people's anxiety too, and the
- 10:17people around me that I interact with in
- 10:18the workplace, they have trauma, and they have
- 10:20addictions, and they're neurodivergent, and all of us
- 10:23have different brains, and it's like, just to
- 10:24do a single day of work, we have
- 10:26to have some way to navigate all of
- 10:28this ground.
- 10:28We are already navigating all of this ground
- 10:30in our life in some way, so how
- 10:32about we let Jesus help us navigate this
- 10:34ground?
- 10:35How about we let his teachings guide us
- 10:36and let him be the anthropologist that we
- 10:39rely on as we think about what it
- 10:40means to be a healthy human being and
- 10:42a healthy Christian in the workplace.
- 10:45Okay, so that's a little bit of what
- 10:46we're going to try and do in this
- 10:47series.
- 10:48Now I want to look at the Gospel
- 10:49of Luke, chapter 10, when Jesus gives us
- 10:52a little bit of his theological anthropology.
- 10:56So this is starting in verse 25.
- 10:58On one occasion, an expert in the law
- 11:00stood up to test Jesus.
- 11:02Teacher, he asked, what must I do to
- 11:04inherit eternal life?
- 11:06Okay, let's pause right there.
- 11:08So this teacher of the law is trying
- 11:09to trip Jesus up.
- 11:10He's not asking this question in good faith,
- 11:13but even though he's not asking this question
- 11:14in good faith, it is a really good
- 11:16question.
- 11:17It is a question that could be asked
- 11:18in good faith and that we can ask
- 11:19in good faith.
- 11:20Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal
- 11:23life?
- 11:25In a previous episode, we looked at John
- 11:26chapter 17 verse 3, where Jesus gives his
- 11:29definition of eternal life, where he says, this
- 11:31is eternal life, that they, my disciples, would
- 11:34know you, the only true God, and Jesus
- 11:37Christ, whom you have sent.
- 11:38So that's Jesus's short definition of eternal life,
- 11:41to know God and to know Jesus Christ,
- 11:43whom God has sent.
- 11:44So it's a relational different, relational definition of
- 11:48eternal life.
- 11:49It's not just about your life never ending.
- 11:52It's not just a quantitative idea of life.
- 11:54It's a different kind of life, the life
- 11:56of being alive to God, receiving life from
- 11:58God, interacting with God.
- 12:01So think about that definition of eternal life
- 12:03as we think about this question.
- 12:05Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal
- 12:08life?
- 12:10What is written in the law?
- 12:11Jesus replied, how do you read it?
- 12:13He answered, love the Lord your God with
- 12:15all your heart, and with all your soul,
- 12:18and with all your strength, and with all
- 12:20your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.
- 12:24You have answered correctly, Jesus replied.
- 12:27Do this, and you will live.
- 12:30Okay, so this skeptical questioner, he somehow still
- 12:34pulls out these two commands from the Torah
- 12:37and says these are the ones that matter.
- 12:39And Jesus is like, you got it, 100
- 12:40% correct.
- 12:41It's about loving God and loving neighbor.
- 12:44But he doesn't just say loving God and
- 12:46loving neighbor.
- 12:46What is the command fully?
- 12:48It's to love the Lord your God with
- 12:50these four different aspects of who you are,
- 12:52with all your heart, with all your soul,
- 12:55with all your strength, with all your mind.
- 12:58So this is Jesus's anthropologist.
- 13:00This is Jesus affirming this teaching of the
- 13:02Torah that there's these different aspects of who
- 13:04we are.
- 13:05We have hearts, we have an inner spiritual
- 13:07life that's hidden, but that determines many, many
- 13:11things about us.
- 13:12We have a will that can make decisions.
- 13:14We also have a soul, we have a
- 13:16kind of also mysterious but like integrating aspect
- 13:19of who we are that brings us together
- 13:20as a single person all these different aspects.
- 13:23We have strength, we have bodily strength, we
- 13:25have everything about our bodies that makes a
- 13:27difference in how we experience and do life.
- 13:30And we have our mind, we have our
- 13:31thoughts and our feelings, all those different things
- 13:33that express who we are and what we
- 13:35do, sometimes in ways that we can see,
- 13:38sometimes in ways that we can't.
- 13:40So Jesus says right at the heart of
- 13:42eternal life, right at the heart of being
- 13:44alive to God, living life interactively with God,
- 13:47are these different aspects of who we are
- 13:49and they're meant to go together and they're
- 13:51meant to be deployed for the purpose of
- 13:54love.
- 13:56So there's a couple different takeaways here from
- 13:58what Jesus is saying.
- 13:59One thing is that Jesus is saying it's
- 14:01really good to understand all the different parts
- 14:04of who you are.
- 14:05It's really good to know that you have
- 14:07a heart and that you have a soul
- 14:09and that you have strength and that you
- 14:11have a mind.
- 14:12We live in a century where a lot
- 14:13of people don't know that about themselves.
- 14:15We've lost the language of the soul, we've
- 14:17lost the language of the heart.
- 14:19People are are illiterate when it comes to
- 14:21the idea of character and personal and spiritual
- 14:23growth.
- 14:24And so we have to recapture those things
- 14:26with Jesus as our teacher if we're going
- 14:28to love God the way that he says
- 14:30we can.
- 14:31The second thing Jesus is saying is that
- 14:33we can love God, that we can become
- 14:36the kind of human beings who love God
- 14:38with all that we are and who love
- 14:41our neighbors as ourselves.
- 14:42So right in the midst of the command
- 14:44is this promise from Jesus.
- 14:46He says, do this and you will live.
- 14:51That is an incredible promise that it is
- 14:53possible to love God like this.
- 14:55It is possible to love neighbor like this
- 14:57and we can do that and we can
- 14:58experience life with God as we do that
- 15:01in the workplace and everywhere else.
- 15:06So now I want to close by just
- 15:07giving you an idea, a meditation to take
- 15:11with you into your work day.
- 15:13That's the idea that God is listening for
- 15:18every part of you.
- 15:20God is listening for your heart.
- 15:23God is listening for your thoughts and your
- 15:25feelings.
- 15:27God is listening for your body.
- 15:28God is listening for your soul.
- 15:31So could you listen with him?
- 15:33Could you open yourself to paying attention to
- 15:36those movements of your experience today and share
- 15:39them with God as you go about your
- 15:41work day?
- 15:42As a co-worker says something to you
- 15:44and you have a feeling, can you pay
- 15:45attention to it and bring it into the
- 15:48presence of God?
- 15:49When you're working on some really difficult projects
- 15:51and you have thoughts of how to make
- 15:52it work, can you express gratitude to God
- 15:55for the insights that he's given you?
- 15:57When your body feels tired, can you rest
- 15:59in the presence of Jesus with you and
- 16:02say, Jesus, I feel tired right now and
- 16:05let Jesus be attentive to you in your
- 16:07body?
- 16:08Jesus is paying attention to all of who
- 16:10you are and as you begin to pay
- 16:13attention to all of who you are in
- 16:14him, he'll bring those things together and deploy
- 16:17them for love.
- 16:21Lord Jesus, thank you.
- 16:23Thank you for making us these dynamic, complex,
- 16:27sometimes convoluted people who have needs and who
- 16:31struggle and who have all these parts of
- 16:34ourselves and we just ask that you would
- 16:36help us to bring all of us to
- 16:39all of you, to experience that life with
- 16:43you that you really invite us into, of
- 16:45loving you with all that we are and
- 16:47loving our neighbors as ourselves.
- 16:49Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 16:51do our work with you.
- 16:57Thanks for listening.
