- 0:01Speaker 1: Royce Lewis talks about his concerns for his future, The
- 0:04Speaker 1: Twins lose a couple of bad games in Washington to
- 0:08Speaker 1: close out the series, a setback for Mick Abel, and
- 0:11Speaker 1: a big weekend series against Cleveland this weekend. All that
- 0:14Speaker 1: and more today on Twins City's Territory You're Minnesota Twins
- 0:17Speaker 1: podcast here on the Foul Territory Network, and we will
- 0:21Speaker 1: start with probably the most eye popping thing from from
- 0:25Speaker 1: the weekend, which was some comments that Royce Lewis made
- 0:29Speaker 1: over the weekend. The Twins' former number one draft pick
- 0:31Speaker 1: has had a very big struggle at the plate this year.
- 0:36Speaker 1: And Dan Hayes are athletic, Minnesota Twins beat writer, I
- 0:41Speaker 1: don't mean that Dan Hayes is athletic. I mean that
- 0:43Speaker 1: he works for the athletic athletic Dan, you were there
- 0:48Speaker 1: in Washington. What happened and what did Royce have to say?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Royce is definitely looking at the big picture. That's
- 0:57Speaker 2: probably not the greatest place to be, but it's also
- 1:00Speaker 2: not shocking because he's struggling so hard right now. I
- 1:02Speaker 2: mean he's you know, since he's returned from the IL.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It was April twenty one, and came back. He's had
- 1:08Speaker 2: forty four played appearances, he's struck out fifteen times, is
- 1:11Speaker 2: a three fifty four OPS, and on the season it's
- 1:13Speaker 2: a five eighty nine OPS. Basically, this is a continuation
- 1:17Speaker 2: of the struggles we've seen from Royce Lewis since August
- 1:19Speaker 2: twenty twenty four. And so look, you understand it, like
- 1:22Speaker 2: he put in some massive swing changes in the offseason,
- 1:25Speaker 2: he hired a coach, he's got a new setup, all
- 1:28Speaker 2: that stuff, and it hasn't turned out so far. And
- 1:31Speaker 2: you know, I'm not shocked that he is worried. I mean,
- 1:35Speaker 2: he hears the footsteps of prospects coming for him, essentially,
- 1:39Speaker 2: and that's what he kind of indicated with his comment. Now,
- 1:41Speaker 2: he never said Kaalen Culpeper by name, but didn't take
- 1:44Speaker 2: much math in from me to figure out who's the
- 1:48Speaker 2: infield prospect that could come up and kind of take
- 1:50Speaker 2: his job. Kaalen Culpeper's a top one hundred. He got
- 1:53Speaker 2: drafted first round of twenty twenty four. He's been great lately.
- 1:56Speaker 2: In his last seven games going into yesterday, had eight RBIs,
- 2:00Speaker 2: four homers. You know, OPS is through the roof and
- 2:03Speaker 2: now Culpepper's mostly been a shortstop. He has played a
- 2:06Speaker 2: little third, But Royce basically was like, hey, look, it
- 2:11Speaker 2: feels like they are always looking to write you off
- 2:15Speaker 2: and move on. And essentially, when we tried to figure
- 2:18Speaker 2: out who Day was, we went and asked him, and
- 2:21Speaker 2: we went back afterwards and was like, are you talking
- 2:23Speaker 2: about fans and he's or you talk about the front
- 2:26Speaker 2: office and he indicated it was the front office and
- 2:29Speaker 2: being worried. Now, let me tell you flat out, Royce
- 2:33Speaker 2: does not. He loves the coaching staff, he loves his teammates,
- 2:37Speaker 2: He feels comfortable in the clubhouse. And his quote basically said,
- 2:41Speaker 2: you know, in here, I'm good. It's just sometimes when
- 2:44Speaker 2: you get home at night, those thoughts creep in and
- 2:47Speaker 2: it's just sort of, Look, this is a player that's
- 2:50Speaker 2: now struggled for almost two seasons. We're a couple months
- 2:53Speaker 2: short of that, and you get he is thinking about
- 2:57Speaker 2: his own career mortality essentially, so he has being somewhat
- 3:01Speaker 2: self aware. But it also you know, he's saying some
- 3:05Speaker 2: stuff like this is a team that clearly still believes
- 3:08Speaker 2: in him, and even if they were to option him,
- 3:12Speaker 2: I don't think it would be the end of Royce
- 3:14Speaker 2: Lewis's career. I think it would be like, hey, we're good.
- 3:18Speaker 2: You know, they just gave him two days off here
- 3:19Speaker 2: and he's gonna be back in the lineup, I would
- 3:21Speaker 2: assume tonight, and they're trying everything they can to get
- 3:24Speaker 2: him right. They love Royce Lewis. Royce Lewis has two
- 3:27Speaker 2: of the biggest home runs in Twins playoff history, and
- 3:32Speaker 2: he is potential. It is it is, but he's a
- 3:35Speaker 2: potential star and fans love him and they want him
- 3:39Speaker 2: to succeed. And I see the Twins point out all
- 3:42Speaker 2: the stops to try and help him succeed, and yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 1: We're losing.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Dan's looking at from the other side, man, this is
- 3:52Speaker 2: it is the end for me.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Tyler Duffy are I didn't introduce him at the beginning
- 3:56Speaker 1: of the show, but our longtime major leaguer form in
- 3:58Speaker 1: Minnesota twin Your thoughts on Lewis's comments.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's I you know, I didn't know what was happening.
- 4:04Speaker 3: My wife told me the quotes and I was like,
- 4:06Speaker 3: oh man, this is you know something, but it's it
- 4:09Speaker 3: is in the moment. The sky's falling.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It sucks.
- 4:12Speaker 3: It's terrible. You know, you want to be a big
- 4:14Speaker 3: leaguer forever. But you know, I got called at fifteen.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It was up basically all sixteen and seventeen, and then
- 4:21Speaker 3: twenty eighteen, I was on the roller coaster. And that's
- 4:24Speaker 3: part of it, Like it's part of the game. It sucks.
- 4:27Speaker 3: You can think a lot of things. I think where
- 4:30Speaker 3: this one is unique is, you know, saying this out
- 4:33Speaker 3: loud to media is not what I would advise a
- 4:38Speaker 3: guy doing. Like, it's just you're opening a door for
- 4:41Speaker 3: a lot of stuff to come at you. You know,
- 4:43Speaker 3: I'm sure teammates are coming to them, media is now
- 4:46Speaker 3: coming to them. Probably front office is going to ask
- 4:48Speaker 3: for a meeting. You know. It's just it's stuff that
- 4:52Speaker 3: you want some attention, and then you're going to get
- 4:54Speaker 3: a lot of attention really quickly. And you know, yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 3: it sucks to not be good at what you've been
- 4:59Speaker 3: good at your whole life. But at the same time,
- 5:01Speaker 3: you're playing at the highest level in the world and
- 5:04Speaker 3: guys are good at baseball too, and sometimes you just
- 5:07Speaker 3: need a reset. And like Dan said, like the fans
- 5:09Speaker 3: aren't going to quit on Royce Lewis, Like they love
- 5:11Speaker 3: Royce Lewis. He's in the community, he's doing great things.
- 5:15Speaker 3: You know, he says all the right things like he's
- 5:17Speaker 3: he wants to be that superstar. And sometimes you just
- 5:21Speaker 3: got to go back and reset. You know, people probably
- 5:24Speaker 3: forget like Presley when he was with Minnesota before he
- 5:27Speaker 3: went to the Astros, like they optioned him and he
- 5:30Speaker 3: came back and was god for five years. So here's
- 5:34Speaker 3: a thing to a reset. It's good for you. Sometimes
- 5:37Speaker 3: you can go tinker without any pressure, without any lights.
- 5:41Speaker 3: You know, it's it's a slowing the game down a
- 5:43Speaker 3: little bit and allowing yourself to address some things. And
- 5:46Speaker 3: it's not the end of the world. And who's to
- 5:48Speaker 3: say he doesn't go four for four tonight and we're
- 5:50Speaker 3: not talking about any of this rest of this season.
- 5:52Speaker 3: You know, it's things can happen so fast in our game,
- 5:55Speaker 3: and you know, one one option here there, or two
- 5:59Speaker 3: days off to kind of set. You know, there's teams
- 6:01Speaker 3: all over the league doing it with their stars. It's
- 6:03Speaker 3: part of the game, and you know it's just part
- 6:05Speaker 3: of growing up and learning maybe don't say some of
- 6:07Speaker 3: these things out loud when there's microphones in front of
- 6:10Speaker 3: your face.
- 6:12Speaker 2: He yeah, I was just real quick. Matt Walner, they
- 6:16Speaker 2: just did this with him. They gave him two days
- 6:19Speaker 2: off and we've seen this week what it looks like
- 6:22Speaker 2: when Matt Walner he hit that rocket off the wall,
- 6:24Speaker 2: the left field wall the other day and then singled
- 6:27Speaker 2: in the same game, and then he homerd the other
- 6:29Speaker 2: night and it was a laser and they basically shortened
- 6:33Speaker 2: his swing up. And that's what the Twins have done
- 6:35Speaker 2: these last two days, is like, hey, Royce, we're gonna
- 6:37Speaker 2: work on this or give you two days off without
- 6:39Speaker 2: the pressure. So now it's his turn to show. And
- 6:42Speaker 2: if it doesn't happen, would it shocked me if he
- 6:44Speaker 2: ended up in the miners in the next week or
- 6:48Speaker 2: so and maybe we saw Ryan Kreidler, it wouldn't shock me.
- 6:51Speaker 2: But Ryan Kreibler is a good player, a solid defender.
- 6:57Speaker 2: But that's not an end of Royce Lewis. In my opinion,
- 7:01Speaker 2: Kayln Culpepper coming up would definitely be that. Not necessarily,
- 7:06Speaker 2: even Kaylyn Culpepper coming up would be an end of Royce,
- 7:08Speaker 2: but it would be like the signal that they're looking
- 7:11Speaker 2: to the future. And and I think they absolutely want
- 7:15Speaker 2: because they know what Royce Lewis can do, and they
- 7:17Speaker 2: want to unlock him, Like Derek Shelton's made this a
- 7:19Speaker 2: point of his tenures so far. He flew to Texas,
- 7:23Speaker 2: went to Frisco, went to barbecue, Like his first act
- 7:27Speaker 2: other than hiring coaches, was to go talk to Royce,
- 7:30Speaker 2: see where he was, tell him how important he was.
- 7:33Speaker 2: And so it's fun, Like it's it's tough. I could
- 7:36Speaker 2: see from like the team side seeing these quotes, It's like, wait,
- 7:40Speaker 2: why does he think this? Because it's it's clear like
- 7:43Speaker 2: they're they're going to lengths to give them chances, and
- 7:47Speaker 2: so it definitely, it definitely is it's a weird situation,
- 7:52Speaker 2: but I you know, I just think it kind of
- 7:55Speaker 2: emphasizes how much Royce is struggling right now and and
- 7:58Speaker 2: does see that career brutality there because it's not like
- 8:02Speaker 2: he's making a lot of money. He's making two point
- 8:04Speaker 2: eight five million dollars, but the next guy up is
- 8:06Speaker 2: making seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars and on a
- 8:09Speaker 2: team with one hundred and one million dollar payroll. You probably,
- 8:12Speaker 2: you know, at some point need to get to be
- 8:16Speaker 2: you know, major league average as a hitter. I mean,
- 8:18Speaker 2: his defense has been good. He can run the bases.
- 8:20Speaker 2: We'ven't had a lot of chances to see him on
- 8:22Speaker 2: the basis because he hasn't been on very much. But
- 8:25Speaker 2: there's a good player in there, and they are they
- 8:28Speaker 2: are desperate to see him come out with that because
- 8:31Speaker 2: it will change how this team kind of competes the
- 8:35Speaker 2: rest of the way if he can be that guy.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Lewis's three years removed from that great twenty twenty three
- 8:43Speaker 1: season where he hit three oh nine nine one ops
- 8:47Speaker 1: and fifty eight games and Twins broke their lengthy playoff
- 8:52Speaker 1: drought beating the Blue Is that right? Twenty twenty three?
- 8:56Speaker 1: Was that year, right?
- 8:56Speaker 2: Dan? Yeah? It was?
- 8:58Speaker 1: I need to stop drinking so much. My memory shot.
- 9:02Speaker 1: We've referenced the quote many times, the quotes, but we'll
- 9:06Speaker 1: show them here to you if you're watching on YouTube.
- 9:09Speaker 1: This is from Dan's story in The Athletic. You can
- 9:11Speaker 1: read it right now on the Athletics dot Com. It
- 9:13Speaker 1: can be really hard when you feel like your career
- 9:16Speaker 1: is going in a different direction. Lewis said, it's been
- 9:18Speaker 1: tougher because obviously we know there's always someone on your tail.
- 9:22Speaker 1: There's always someone ready to take your next job. Every
- 9:25Speaker 1: day I'm here fighting and working as hard as I
- 9:26Speaker 1: can to show that I'm giving it my all to
- 9:28Speaker 1: keep my job because I love what I do. I've
- 9:30Speaker 1: been smiling. I feel fine leaving the game, But I
- 9:33Speaker 1: think what scares me most is like, oh, they might
- 9:35Speaker 1: try to get me out of here when I leave
- 9:37Speaker 1: the field. That thought does creep in my head. It
- 9:40Speaker 1: feels like people around here sometimes are waiting for me
- 9:43Speaker 1: to struggle so that they can write me off officially
- 9:45Speaker 1: or get me out of here. It's the first time
- 9:47Speaker 1: in my career where it's become a business instead of
- 9:51Speaker 1: playing the game I love. And so Dan, you're saying
- 9:55Speaker 1: that all those references to they he's talking about the
- 9:59Speaker 1: front office.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Yeahs, unless he's gotten you know, pays attention to social media,
- 10:06Speaker 2: which is possible. And even then, I think the overwhelming
- 10:11Speaker 2: you know, I think the overwhelming sentiment on social media
- 10:15Speaker 2: is that Royce is like lovable, you know, like the
- 10:18Speaker 2: fans will put up with a lot of stuff from
- 10:21Speaker 2: guys because of those two home runs against the Blue
- 10:24Speaker 2: Jays off Kevin Gosman. The fans want the good Royce.
- 10:28Speaker 2: But also there's a segment of the fans that you
- 10:32Speaker 2: know suck. I had someone tell me, ask me if
- 10:35Speaker 2: I was satisfied being a boot licker for the team
- 10:38Speaker 2: this morning, and it is, you hear those things. You
- 10:42Speaker 2: hear those things regardless if ninety nine percent of the
- 10:47Speaker 2: stuff you get back is good. But yes, he meant
- 10:51Speaker 2: day as in the front office, and we asked him,
- 10:55Speaker 2: he like, does that mean you think he'll be optioned
- 10:57Speaker 2: or traded? And he said, I don't know, maybe both,
- 11:00Speaker 2: And so it's clear that and you know, talking to
- 11:04Speaker 2: Derek Shelton, he said, look, everybody thinks these things. Every
- 11:08Speaker 2: major leaguer at some point has doubts. There's nobody that's
- 11:11Speaker 2: immune to having these doubts. No human is immune. Like
- 11:13Speaker 2: we all have these doubts. Maybe there's a five or
- 11:17Speaker 2: ten percent of people out there that don't ever look
- 11:20Speaker 2: at themselves in the mirror and don't question themselves, but
- 11:24Speaker 2: everybody thinks doubtful thoughts, and the majority of us aren't
- 11:28Speaker 2: in a high pressure job like the majors, like, right,
- 11:31Speaker 2: so I'm not trying to hit a ninety five mile
- 11:33Speaker 2: per hour fastball and I'm just trying to write a
- 11:35Speaker 2: stupid story and we all feel it, so you know,
- 11:41Speaker 2: it's again, I think it's him showing some awareness. But
- 11:46Speaker 2: at the same time, you know, the quotes definitely are
- 11:50Speaker 2: not ordinary. We don't see players saying this kind of
- 11:53Speaker 2: stuff a lot, and Royce just is a very honest,
- 11:57Speaker 2: open guy and a very friendly So it didn't shock
- 12:02Speaker 2: me that he says these kind of things because he's
- 12:04Speaker 2: done it before. When when he they asked him to
- 12:07Speaker 2: go to second base in twenty twenty four, he had
- 12:11Speaker 2: talked about it first and was kind of excited and
- 12:13Speaker 2: then he realized it was gonna be really tough, and
- 12:16Speaker 2: he made the quote that moving from third to second
- 12:20Speaker 2: was kind of trying to take like take a baby
- 12:23Speaker 2: from its crib where you know it's secure in its
- 12:26Speaker 2: crib and you don't want to put it in the
- 12:28Speaker 2: spot where it's not comfortable and make it cry. And
- 12:33Speaker 2: he's had he said some things that have caught attention,
- 12:37Speaker 2: probably going back to about the time he struggled in
- 12:40Speaker 2: twenty twenty four. It's just as it's kind of symptomatic
- 12:44Speaker 2: of a guy who was really struggled, in my opinion,
- 12:48Speaker 2: and is kind of voicing his own inner concerns, Like
- 12:53Speaker 2: it's all coincided with all of that stuff because he
- 12:57Speaker 2: was teflon through the injuries, and Duffy, you were there
- 13:01Speaker 2: for that second ACL. The first one happened in the
- 13:04Speaker 2: off season before twenty twenty one. You were right. He
- 13:09Speaker 2: came to camp and they found ACL. The second one
- 13:12Speaker 2: was him playing center field, being a true team player
- 13:16Speaker 2: at the time because this is a shortstop and the
- 13:19Speaker 2: Twins needed a centerfielder that day. And he played and
- 13:22Speaker 2: he made a great catch at the wall and he
- 13:25Speaker 2: tore his ACL for a second time. And afterward he
- 13:28Speaker 2: went up to Sonny Grant and said, but was it
- 13:30Speaker 2: a cool catch? And Sonny was like, no, no, you
- 13:34Speaker 2: hurt yourself. Like Royce is such a pleaser, do you
- 13:37Speaker 2: know what I mean? Like he really is. He wants
- 13:40Speaker 2: to make You can speak to that. You've seen that.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Royce is like the guy that really cares what his
- 13:46Speaker 2: teammates think and is willing to do anything for his teammates.
- 13:50Speaker 2: And like there's so much of him that is really
- 13:53Speaker 2: good for a team. This is a number one overall
- 13:55Speaker 2: pick who probably gives too much of a shit about
- 13:58Speaker 2: what people think about him in the house and wants
- 14:01Speaker 2: to give it all.
- 14:03Speaker 1: We got to take take a quick break. We'll be
- 14:05Speaker 1: right back. I want to hear Tyler's thoughts on that lot,
- 14:07Speaker 1: more on Royce Lewis, more on the Twins' poor end
- 14:11Speaker 1: to the series in Washington, and what's coming next in
- 14:14Speaker 1: Cleveland right after this.

- 15:19Speaker 1: All right, we're back, Tyler. I think you're about to
- 15:23Speaker 1: say something about Royce Lewis and tearing his acl while
- 15:26Speaker 1: catching a ball in the Yeah.
- 15:27Speaker 3: I mean it's one to Dan's point, excuse me.
- 15:30Speaker 2: He uh.
- 15:31Speaker 3: You know, he is such a team guy and wants
- 15:34Speaker 3: to do everything right and at the same in the
- 15:38Speaker 3: same vein you know, I played for dougman Kaevich for
- 15:41Speaker 3: several years of my minor league career and one my
- 15:45Speaker 3: first full season twenty thirteen, we had him in high eight,
- 15:48Speaker 3: and you know, obviously he was pretty brash at the
- 15:52Speaker 3: time of stuff he said because he'd been there and
- 15:54Speaker 3: done it and kind of had to grind and all that.
- 15:57Speaker 3: One of his things I remember saying vividly was the
- 15:59Speaker 3: day you son, was the day they started looking for
- 16:02Speaker 3: your replacement. And he's not wrong because then in that
- 16:06Speaker 3: same conversation he even made remarks like, you know, nice
- 16:10Speaker 3: guys don't make it, and to that point is sometimes
- 16:14Speaker 3: you got to buckle down, be a dog, you know,
- 16:16Speaker 3: stay in your lane, like you can be the nicest
- 16:17Speaker 3: guy in the world, but at the end of the day,
- 16:20Speaker 3: it's cutthroat man and the next guy is tearing it
- 16:23Speaker 3: up and you're not like that's just the way of
- 16:25Speaker 3: the road. And you know Royce is going through what
- 16:29Speaker 3: he's going through right now, and like I said, in
- 16:32Speaker 3: two months, he could be an All Star. You know,
- 16:35Speaker 3: he could go on a tear for the next two
- 16:37Speaker 3: months and be, you know, the hero. It's it's just
- 16:41Speaker 3: one of those things. It's baseball. It's tough. It's one
- 16:43Speaker 3: hundred and sixty two game season. You know, he's had
- 16:46Speaker 3: so many injuries and everything he's he's yet to have
- 16:49Speaker 3: just like a consistent just show up and play baseball.
- 16:52Speaker 3: And I think that's what's at the end of the day,
- 16:55Speaker 3: is what's weighing down on him the most is he
- 16:57Speaker 3: hasn't just been able to play and he's get into play.
- 17:01Speaker 3: You know, he had the little hiccup and now he's
- 17:03Speaker 3: struggling a little bit and it's like he wants to
- 17:05Speaker 3: just be who he is and and sometimes it takes
- 17:07Speaker 3: some time. And you know, the league knows him very
- 17:10Speaker 3: well now. People know how to pitch him, where to
- 17:13Speaker 3: attack him, things like that, and he just needs to
- 17:15Speaker 3: kind of readdress himself and you know whether that happened
- 17:18Speaker 3: in the last two days and he's gonna break out
- 17:20Speaker 3: today or if he needs a minute to kind of
- 17:22Speaker 3: catch his breath and Saint Paul and forget about some
- 17:26Speaker 3: things like nobody cares. At the end of the day,
- 17:28Speaker 3: show up and help the team win and and all
- 17:31Speaker 3: all is great, And you know, I think he'll be
- 17:33Speaker 3: fine at the end of the day. You know, once
- 17:35Speaker 3: this storm rolls through, you know the way social media
- 17:38Speaker 3: and quotes work, now, it'll be gone in a couple
- 17:41Speaker 3: of days and nobody will remember it, and you know
- 17:43Speaker 3: it'll be fine. So it's it's on. It's gonna suck
- 17:46Speaker 3: for the next couple of days, like I said, but
- 17:48Speaker 3: it's uh, you know, it's not something I would have
- 17:50Speaker 3: set out loud.
- 17:51Speaker 1: At least, well, he'll be back in the lineup Friday
- 17:56Speaker 1: night in Cleveland, Dan, that's the expectation, I think.
- 18:00Speaker 2: So that's what Derek Shelton said. He said, Look, this
- 18:02Speaker 2: is a two game mental reset. Sometimes you just take
- 18:06Speaker 2: those two games off and you watch the game and
- 18:09Speaker 2: you don't feel the pressure and it's relaxing and you're
- 18:13Speaker 2: not thinking I got to get this guy later. You're
- 18:16Speaker 2: just watching and taking it in. And you know, it
- 18:19Speaker 2: worked for Matt Walner. And I don't know if brooks
- 18:21Speaker 2: Lee got two days off, but whatever reset they gave
- 18:24Speaker 2: him seemed to work for him pretty well. And he's
- 18:27Speaker 2: one of their better hitters now. So it's not a
- 18:30Speaker 2: bad idea to give these young guys, not necessarily young
- 18:35Speaker 2: anymore for those three, but I mean, like these still
- 18:38Speaker 2: proving themselves, guys who are talented, all of them are
- 18:41Speaker 2: first rounders, and yeah, giving them a little breather can
- 18:47Speaker 2: be a good decision.
- 18:50Speaker 1: The Twins. When the roller coaster of the Twins has
- 18:54Speaker 1: been something this year. We on Wednesday show where they
- 18:57Speaker 1: were coming off an eleven to three victory, the first
- 19:00Speaker 1: consecutive wins in almost a month. We were talking they
- 19:04Speaker 1: were a game and a half out of first. We
- 19:05Speaker 1: were talking about how a good end of this season
- 19:08Speaker 1: or sorry, the series in Washington could put them in
- 19:11Speaker 1: position for a first place showdown with Cleveland this weekend.
- 19:14Speaker 1: It didn't go that way. The Twins were out scored
- 19:16Speaker 1: twenty two to seven in the final two games of
- 19:18Speaker 1: that series, lost both games. Most of that damage happened
- 19:22Speaker 1: in the fifteen to two loss on Wednesday, but another
- 19:26Speaker 1: poor stretch of baseball and they head to Cleveland now
- 19:29Speaker 1: three and a half out. The Guardians, meanwhile, won both
- 19:32Speaker 1: games since our last podcast and are over five hundred.
- 19:34Speaker 1: We have an over five hundred team in the AL Central.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah go figure, but damn plenty to unpack from those
- 19:42Speaker 1: two games. Mostly bad. Yeah, ugly, ugly, ug l y.
- 19:48Speaker 1: You don't cut no alibi. Ugly, You're ugly that.
- 19:52Speaker 2: I'm gonna say that every time. I love that cheer. Anyways,
- 19:56Speaker 2: the bullpen falling apart on It was Wednesday, and that
- 20:01Speaker 2: game going from close to fifteen to two. Bailey Over game.
- 20:06Speaker 2: You know, Bailey Over was not his best in that one,
- 20:08Speaker 2: and you know he was. He got some early, a
- 20:13Speaker 2: lot of balls found gloves early, they didn't later. He
- 20:17Speaker 2: had no change up, he said, and gave up a
- 20:20Speaker 2: couple of home runs. And then the bullpen came in
- 20:23Speaker 2: and it went from like a four to two or
- 20:25Speaker 2: maybe I think it was four to two, and all
- 20:27Speaker 2: of a sudden it was fifteen to two, and it
- 20:29Speaker 2: was like that was just we've seen that so much.
- 20:32Speaker 2: We saw that with the eight run eighth last Saturday
- 20:35Speaker 2: at home. It's pretty bad right now with the bullpen
- 20:39Speaker 2: it's very hard to see this group keeping them in
- 20:44Speaker 2: games when you've seen those performances a couple times a week.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Like you need development, you need some guys to step
- 20:51Speaker 2: up and start having good years, and then you follow
- 20:53Speaker 2: that up with the series finale on Thursday. Simeon Woods
- 20:57Speaker 2: Richardson got through the first two, got some double plays,
- 21:02Speaker 2: and then he started giving the lead back. He put
- 21:04Speaker 2: the lead runner on the leadoff guy on three times
- 21:06Speaker 2: in five innings. Two of those guys came around to score.
- 21:11Speaker 2: It's funny because I feel like yesterday's game was sort
- 21:15Speaker 2: of like a microcosm of this season where the Twins
- 21:18Speaker 2: would have some momentum and then they'd do something to
- 21:20Speaker 2: kind of take their own momentum way, and then they'd
- 21:24Speaker 2: give it right back. And the example I can think
- 21:26Speaker 2: of right off the top of my head is, you know,
- 21:29Speaker 2: they take the three to one lead yesterday and Austin
- 21:34Speaker 2: Martin there was a double Austin Martin took a big
- 21:39Speaker 2: rounding of third, picked up Ramon Borego's signed too late,
- 21:45Speaker 2: the stop sign too late and was about ten feet
- 21:48Speaker 2: off third, and the Nationals back picked and instead of
- 21:51Speaker 2: throwing home, they throwed a third and they cut him down.
- 21:55Speaker 2: He made the third out to end the inning. There
- 21:57Speaker 2: was another play where Cody Clemens was thrown out at
- 21:59Speaker 2: home on a sack of potential sack fly. They had
- 22:03Speaker 2: the one ball where Walner and Keishael couldn't decide and
- 22:07Speaker 2: it should have been a routine pop up and it
- 22:10Speaker 2: it turned into a double. Yeah. And there were free
- 22:14Speaker 2: passes and there were hit batters and Sime and Woods.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Richardson gave up five has a six ninety two eer
- 22:21Speaker 2: right now, doesn't you know like that hasn't been going well.
- 22:26Speaker 2: The bullpen isn't going well, and you see the Twins.
- 22:30Speaker 2: They'll get a little momentum. They could have won this series.
- 22:32Speaker 2: This is the second series in a row where they
- 22:34Speaker 2: they won the first game and then lost the last
- 22:36Speaker 2: two and they get that good energetic start and then
- 22:40Speaker 2: they can't capitalize, and it's you know, it just seems
- 22:45Speaker 2: like we've seen this over and over and that's why
- 22:47Speaker 2: they are sixteen to twenty two. Early on, I think
- 22:50Speaker 2: of those first four series, they played three of them,
- 22:53Speaker 2: they were in the rubber match looking for win. They
- 22:54Speaker 2: lost them all, and then we saw them turning around
- 22:56Speaker 2: and start winning series and they're back to that m
- 23:00Speaker 2: right now where they can't get the big hit, they're
- 23:03Speaker 2: making silly airs. Derek Shelton said, this was just not
- 23:06Speaker 2: a good baseball game about Thursday. And it's funny because
- 23:10Speaker 2: it was a winnable game, and whereas the fifteen to
- 23:12Speaker 2: two is just a drubbing, the seven to five loss
- 23:15Speaker 2: was a disappointing. We just we should have won this game.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Kind of feeling.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Twins are five and one in their last sixth series,
- 23:27Speaker 1: but have won the first game in four of those.
- 23:30Speaker 2: That kind's crazy.
- 23:31Speaker 1: That goes back to the Cincinnati series right after they
- 23:35Speaker 1: they beat Boston. But yeah, Tyler, it does seem like
- 23:38Speaker 1: every time this team takes one step forward, it's followed
- 23:40Speaker 1: by two steps back.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Right now.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of like we've kind of talked off
- 23:46Speaker 3: and on all year about it. It's the little things
- 23:49Speaker 3: are going to show when they when they are going correct.
- 23:53Speaker 3: You know, I was watching, you know, I think Bando
- 23:56Speaker 3: was pitch when that fly ball dropped. You know, I
- 23:58Speaker 3: think there's two guys on and it's seemingly a routine
- 24:02Speaker 3: play and like the key Shoals defense in that moment,
- 24:06Speaker 3: he's not nearly the size of Matt Walner and you
- 24:09Speaker 3: hear him coming behind you, you're gonna stop, like sorry,
- 24:14Speaker 3: And you know the rule of thumb is outfielder's always
- 24:18Speaker 3: got priority. You know, he's barreling in. He stops and
- 24:21Speaker 3: you can see they kind of replayed and he's like, oh,
- 24:24Speaker 3: you know, and ball drops, run scores, another guy comes up.
- 24:28Speaker 3: You know, it's just the little stuff like that will
- 24:31Speaker 3: always beat this team if they don't execute. They don't
- 24:35Speaker 3: have that room for air. They don't have Mason Miller,
- 24:39Speaker 3: you know, who pick your guy coming out for the
- 24:41Speaker 3: eighth and ninth, Like, we just don't have that, and
- 24:43Speaker 3: so you can't afford to give away any runs, whether
- 24:46Speaker 3: you have a lead or not, because you're not gonna
- 24:49Speaker 3: miraculously pull a rabbit out of the hat over and
- 24:52Speaker 3: over again. And you know it's one I'm sure they're
- 24:55Speaker 3: talking about still. They're probably working in the outfield, you know,
- 24:58Speaker 3: night game today, they'll get there early, you know, get
- 25:01Speaker 3: some fly balls in Cleveland, like get the feel for
- 25:04Speaker 3: the stadium first time this year. Like the wind gets
- 25:06Speaker 3: a little scary in there sometimes. You know, it's just you.
- 25:10Speaker 3: You would hope and think and I know they are
- 25:13Speaker 3: you know they're working on this stuff, and you know,
- 25:15Speaker 3: I think to Chelte's defense, you know, sometimes managers get blamed,
- 25:21Speaker 3: he's he's here for a reason. They brought him in
- 25:23Speaker 3: for a reason. You know. I think he's there because
- 25:25Speaker 3: he knows how to work with young guys and get
- 25:27Speaker 3: them to develop and get them comfortable. And I think
- 25:30Speaker 3: he's probably doing that behind closed doors. It's just getting
- 25:33Speaker 3: it to transfer to the field, and you know, as
- 25:36Speaker 3: of the last few series, it just ain't happened.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Another development this week, Dan Amid starting pitching, being the
- 25:46Speaker 1: one consistent bright spot for the most part for the Twins.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Some bad news on that front, as Mick Abel, who
- 25:51Speaker 1: went to the d L a couple of weeks ago,
- 25:53Speaker 1: had to set back.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Yeah, he threw a bullpen on Saturday at home and
- 25:59Speaker 2: he he came off with some soreness, and I remember
- 26:03Speaker 2: he went on that with with right elbow inflammation, and
- 26:07Speaker 2: when he came off the mound the other day things
- 26:10Speaker 2: had been progressing nicely. He was reporting a little bit
- 26:14Speaker 2: of soreness in his triceps, did a COURTI zone shot
- 26:17Speaker 2: in his tricep and for the moment they've shut him down.
- 26:21Speaker 2: It does sound like they'll reevaluate him tuesday, they get
- 26:24Speaker 2: home to play the Marlins on Tuesday, and that they
- 26:26Speaker 2: want to get him throwing again, And so it doesn't
- 26:30Speaker 2: sound like a long shutdown, but nevertheless, like this is
- 26:34Speaker 2: a guy they thought was getting close to coming back
- 26:36Speaker 2: and maybe was within two weeks of getting back out there.
- 26:40Speaker 2: So you know, we're then looking at probably a somewhere
- 26:44Speaker 2: between a nine and ten days shutdown and starting up
- 26:48Speaker 2: again as long as you know the court of zone
- 26:51Speaker 2: took and that that you know, soreness, whatever showed in
- 26:55Speaker 2: the tricep afterwards is out of there, and that's you know,
- 26:59Speaker 2: assuming that, and we don't know that. So definitely, you know,
- 27:05Speaker 2: a little bit of a trying time for him because
- 27:07Speaker 2: mickabeles last two thirteen scoreless, sixteen strikeouts. He looks the
- 27:12Speaker 2: part of a guy that they gave up Joan Durant
- 27:15Speaker 2: for and they want him back, and you know, it
- 27:19Speaker 2: would probably make the if mick abel is on the
- 27:22Speaker 2: way back. You know, Simon Woods Richardson might be in
- 27:27Speaker 2: a tougher spot right now, even with Zebbie Matthews is
- 27:29Speaker 2: pitching well triple A, you know, come out two times
- 27:33Speaker 2: in a row and given five innings and a run
- 27:35Speaker 2: or two something like that. Simon Woods Richardson as of
- 27:39Speaker 2: this moment, you know, there's not anybody breathing down his neck,
- 27:42Speaker 2: but you know, if there was, he might have to
- 27:45Speaker 2: go to the Triple A to figure it out too.
- 27:47Speaker 2: And I think he's out options. So it's a weird spot.
- 27:52Speaker 2: This Mickabel news definitely is unfortunate for them, just because
- 27:55Speaker 2: you need the best out of your rotation and right
- 27:57Speaker 2: now it's been you know that that spot. I think
- 28:01Speaker 2: they've won one game that Samil Woods Richardson started and
- 28:05Speaker 2: you can tell he's searching for it just in his
- 28:08Speaker 2: answers after the game the other day too. It was
- 28:10Speaker 2: just it's it's a tough time for him. And so
- 28:13Speaker 2: this able news certainly is a damper for the Twins
- 28:16Speaker 2: who thought maybe they were going to get someone with
- 28:18Speaker 2: there with ace like qualities, or at least mid rotation
- 28:21Speaker 2: like qualities back soon, because his stuff has looked good.
- 28:25Speaker 2: And I'm sure they're a little disappointed.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Tyler. How fun is it to be in a situation
- 28:31Speaker 1: where you're getting asked about why you can't pitch? Well,
- 28:35Speaker 1: I mean what richards going through it?
- 28:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it's you know, it's when you're having the one
- 28:41Speaker 3: in between some good ones, it's a little bit easier
- 28:43Speaker 3: to handle. You know. It's like you can kind of
- 28:45Speaker 3: be blunt and to be like, yeah, I just didn't
- 28:47Speaker 3: have it today, you know, miss. You know there's some
- 28:50Speaker 3: games in twenty sixteen. You know, I had a wild year,
- 28:55Speaker 3: like stat line wise, i'd you know, go seven and
- 28:57Speaker 3: two hits, and then I go to and give a
- 28:59Speaker 3: four home and it was just like, you know what happened.
- 29:02Speaker 3: I'm like, you tell me, you know kind of thing,
- 29:05Speaker 3: and the ball different, you know, like that Phillies game
- 29:11Speaker 3: comes to mind. I give it like I think I
- 29:12Speaker 3: gave up three or four home runs before the second
- 29:14Speaker 3: inning was over, and Molly pulled me, and I'm like
- 29:16Speaker 3: to just let me eat some innings, like let me
- 29:18Speaker 3: throw some pitches.
- 29:20Speaker 2: You know.
- 29:20Speaker 3: But to that point, if you're just getting hit, it's
- 29:24Speaker 3: one thing. But when you're walking people and you know,
- 29:27Speaker 3: hitting guys and whatever it may be, it's it's one
- 29:30Speaker 3: of those where it's like, hey, Bud, like you got
- 29:32Speaker 3: to step up to the plate here and show some
- 29:36Speaker 3: signs of life. Uh, you know, and back to like
- 29:40Speaker 3: the Royce situation, like sometimes you just need a reset,
- 29:43Speaker 3: you know, you need to go back and find some
- 29:45Speaker 3: confidence somewhere. You can pretend to have it all you want,
- 29:48Speaker 3: but only you know what's going through your mind when
- 29:50Speaker 3: you're on the mound, and whether he says that or not,
- 29:53Speaker 3: you know, postgame interviews, like, you know, it's not gonna
- 29:55Speaker 3: he's sim's not going to say that stuff. But it's
- 29:58Speaker 3: a tough spot to be, you know, of that four
- 30:01Speaker 3: days you're sitting there watching other guys do their job
- 30:03Speaker 3: and you're coming out. You're like, all right, I got
- 30:04Speaker 3: to do it today. And you know, sometimes it starts
- 30:08Speaker 3: to eat at you and it's a it can make
- 30:10Speaker 3: for a long season, but you know again, it's a
- 30:14Speaker 3: it's it's a game of losses more than it is wins,
- 30:18Speaker 3: and you know it. You know, do you know that
- 30:21Speaker 3: the other side of it is there, it's just getting
- 30:24Speaker 3: there and you know right now and he's just kind
- 30:26Speaker 3: of struggling going through it, and you know, maybe it's
- 30:30Speaker 3: time to change something, you know, I don't I don't
- 30:32Speaker 3: know if he's an option to move to the pen
- 30:34Speaker 3: to tick up some bilo or what like, you know,
- 30:36Speaker 3: if another guy is ready. But you know, at this point,
- 30:40Speaker 3: I wouldn't leave anything off the table.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I think I would just choose straight sarcasm, like what happened, Well,
- 30:47Speaker 1: he hit the ball a half inch higher on the
- 30:50Speaker 1: bat than he did last time, so instead of a
- 30:52Speaker 1: ground out, it was a laser into the left field seats.
- 30:55Speaker 1: But anyway, it was almost now almost out right. Uh,
- 31:01Speaker 1: the Twins are in Cleveland, and so is Dan hayes
- 31:04Speaker 1: h wearing a Warrior shirt not by accident, while while
- 31:08Speaker 1: they're the first series of the year against the Guardians. Tyler,
- 31:13Speaker 1: I think you mentioned this a little bit on last
- 31:15Speaker 1: on the last show. But a place that is easy
- 31:18Speaker 1: to get up for to play in, right.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's always that big division rival. You know,
- 31:23Speaker 3: Casey has been good. Detroit, you know, is coming alive,
- 31:27Speaker 3: you know in their own regard. But Cleveland's kind of
- 31:29Speaker 3: always been the place where the Twins have to win
- 31:31Speaker 3: baseball games to be relevant. And you know, in the
- 31:36Speaker 3: years past, it was, you know, the rotation was unstoppable.
- 31:39Speaker 3: You know, they've always pitched developed pitching so well. You know,
- 31:42Speaker 3: the bullpen's always they somehow just magically have a great
- 31:45Speaker 3: bullpen no matter what, you know, it's it's always a
- 31:49Speaker 3: competitive series. It's always a good series, tough lineup. Normally,
- 31:53Speaker 3: they got some pesty guys in there. You know, Jose
- 31:56Speaker 3: Ramirez is always lurking. You know, I've always joked him.
- 32:00Speaker 3: He's he's one of those guys. You know, whatever your
- 32:02Speaker 3: best out pitches, he's gonna swing and miss once and
- 32:06Speaker 3: then you better get him with something else because you're
- 32:08Speaker 3: not gonna get him twice in the same at bat.
- 32:10Speaker 3: It's it's really hard to do. There's a reason he
- 32:13Speaker 3: is who he is. And you know, they got good coach.
- 32:17Speaker 3: It seems like they're always a good vibes team, you know,
- 32:20Speaker 3: and it's it's a great place to go play a ballgame.
- 32:22Speaker 3: I'm sure they'll have some good crowd, you know Cleveland.
- 32:25Speaker 3: When they're good, people show up. And like we just said,
- 32:27Speaker 3: they're about five hundred leading the division. So as long
- 32:30Speaker 3: as the weather's good. Sometimes it can be pretty rainy
- 32:33Speaker 3: and gross there, kind of like Minnesota. But it's a
- 32:35Speaker 3: great place to watch for watch a game, great bullpen,
- 32:39Speaker 3: you know, it's a it's a good place to play.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Starting pitching will again be a challenge for the Twins.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Parker and Messi goes tonight two point four oh e
- 32:48Speaker 1: r A and seven starts in the finale on Sunday
- 32:51Speaker 1: is Gavid Williams, who leads the majors in strikeouts right now.
- 32:54Speaker 1: But the Twins Dan have a pretty good lineup of
- 32:56Speaker 1: starters as well, and it would surely be nice to
- 32:59Speaker 1: end this road trip with something other than zero or
- 33:02Speaker 1: one wins in a series.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Well, at least they're at a place where nothing bad
- 33:06Speaker 2: ever happens. Right Oh wait, yeah, oh wait, let's just
- 33:13Speaker 2: talk about all the rewrites that Dan has had here,
- 33:16Speaker 2: because Cleveland, between the eighth and ninth innings against teams
- 33:21Speaker 2: with good bullpens, has come back. Duff, do you remember
- 33:25Speaker 2: the Wes Johnson left the team series mid flight, we
- 33:30Speaker 2: find out that West Johnson's no longer a pitching coach.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Twins are in first place in twenty twenty two. End
- 33:35Speaker 2: of June. Four game series. Twins win one by an
- 33:39Speaker 2: absolute blowout, the other three walkoffs or Cleveland scoring in
- 33:43Speaker 2: the eighth inning. It always happens here, tight games. These
- 33:47Speaker 2: two teams beat the crap out of each other with
- 33:50Speaker 2: three to two games, and then Cleveland finds Rabbit and
- 33:53Speaker 2: Hat and walks them off. I have heard more. Tom
- 33:56Speaker 2: Hamilton excited calls based off these series, and it goes back.
- 34:02Speaker 2: I had it. I heard it a lot when I
- 34:04Speaker 2: covered the White Sox too from twelve to seventeen. I
- 34:07Speaker 2: estimate I've seen thirty games where Cleveland has come back
- 34:11Speaker 2: in the eighth or ninth inning to win because they're
- 34:14Speaker 2: so good at what they do and they're so good
- 34:16Speaker 2: about it at home. So, yes, the Twins have some
- 34:18Speaker 2: really good starting pitching. The one thing we have seen
- 34:21Speaker 2: that they don't have so far as a bullpen that's consistent,
- 34:24Speaker 2: that can get outs when it matters. That's not a
- 34:27Speaker 2: good I don't know, that's just not a good place
- 34:31Speaker 2: to be when you're coming to a place where Cleveland
- 34:33Speaker 2: knows how to get the most out of your you know,
- 34:36Speaker 2: in those spots. So this could be a painful series
- 34:40Speaker 2: despite some really good potential starting pitching, and you know,
- 34:45Speaker 2: it wouldn't be the first time I've seen it. But
- 34:47Speaker 2: that's why I love to come here and represent the
- 34:50Speaker 2: one thing you know, in my life that actually the
- 34:55Speaker 2: Warriors just owned the Cavaliers. And I love to wear
- 34:58Speaker 2: this T shirt here, like if they're gonna give me
- 35:02Speaker 2: the pain of having to rewrite a story, you know,
- 35:06Speaker 2: If Cleveland is responsible for me doing extra work thirty
- 35:09Speaker 2: times over the last ten years, I'm gonna remind them
- 35:12Speaker 2: of the bad times for them. So this is why
- 35:14Speaker 2: I wear this T shirt here, even though the wearors suck.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Right now, it's been really tough. Steve Kerr might leave.
- 35:20Speaker 2: We got all kinds of issues. It's not good. Maybe
- 35:22Speaker 2: I shouldn't talk about it out loud.
- 35:24Speaker 1: They also lost in NBA Finals to Cleveland. If I don't,
- 35:27Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken, I've the.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Ball tap heard around the world. Draymond had to punch
- 35:32Speaker 2: Lebron and they blew a three run lead, and I
- 35:35Speaker 2: still have nightmares about that. But yeah, it'll be an
- 35:41Speaker 2: interesting couple of days here, just because you have pre Lip,
- 35:45Speaker 2: you have Joe Ryan and TODJ. Bradley, and you feel
- 35:48Speaker 2: good about your team's chances. Anytime those guys are in
- 35:50Speaker 2: the Mountain. I would imagine when it comes to the
- 35:53Speaker 2: betting lines out there that you won't see the Twins
- 35:56Speaker 2: be heavy dogs because you've got three dudes like that
- 36:00Speaker 2: going in the games and all three have been TOAJ
- 36:04Speaker 2: was outstanding the last time out. You know, Joe Ryan
- 36:06Speaker 2: pitches well here all the time, and Connor Prelips had
- 36:09Speaker 2: a good start to his career.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Prelip against Parker mess tonight, Joe Ryan against Tannered Biby
- 36:17Speaker 1: on Saturday, and then TOAJ Bradley and Gavin Williams on Sunday.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Twins are off Monday and then a nine game homestand
- 36:25Speaker 1: and four of their next five series are against teams
- 36:28Speaker 1: that are currently under five hundred. After this Cleveland series
- 36:32Speaker 1: in Cleveland's only one game over, so perhaps a chance
- 36:36Speaker 1: to start stacking some wins. However, the Twins have not
- 36:40Speaker 1: exactly shown a lot of consistency in that department lately,
- 36:42Speaker 1: to put it mildly, but we'll see. We'll be back
- 36:45Speaker 1: with you on Monday before the nine game homestand begins
- 36:48Speaker 1: with the Marlins on Tuesday, And as always, we thank
- 36:53Speaker 1: you for listening. If you like what you hear, please
- 36:55Speaker 1: subscribe toss us alike a comment. We'd love to hear
- 36:58Speaker 1: your feedback and we will see you next time on
