Latest / Reborn w/ Antonio Boutros / Redemptive Leadership: Serving God Through Entrepreneurship
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to today's episode of Reborn with Tony Bertrands.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Today we have the honor of interviewing Greg Enis.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Greg, it's probably a cliche by now, but you're an inspiration.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: You've started so many communities here and you've moved from sunny California to what I call bipolar Indiana.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: It truly, you're an inspiration for a community of leaders, entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: But even more than that, you lead the pack on being a man of God, being a redemptive leader, not just a leader, because that's what we're learning about, what we just spoke about, the redemptive playbook group, where we're learning how to build a business, but build it in a way we are serving God, we are serving the community, we're serving our partners, our staff, and so on.
- 0:48unknown: Yes.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So take your time.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Greg, thank you for being here.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: If you could just give us a brief understanding of what is C7.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: C7 stands for Citizen Seven, Indy.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: We're a network of men that really value friendship because we've been befriended by Jesus Christ.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: And in our friendship, we hope to spread the love of Jesus in every venture that we're called to here in Indy, to see Indianapolis become a city where everybody is known and loved.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: That's our vision.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: We believe in the power of Jesus love.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: At the core, when uh Don Palmer and I started in its former uh ages, uh it's called Narnia, but you can't call you can't copyright Narnia.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: C.S.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Lewis and others have that.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: So we uh thought about what it might look like if we were to rebrand but have a notion of us as our identity being citizens of heaven, but deployed here to Indianapolis.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: So citizen represents a place-based commitment to the ethos, culture, and ecosystem of the place that we're called to.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: But our identity is in heaven.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: We know that God has called us here.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Seven is the number of completion, it's the perfect number.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Many people use it in Las Vegas and elsewhere.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: I'm not a gambler that way, but I know that it's a lucky number.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, so Citizen Seven is a sense of aspirational vision.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: We desire Indianapolis to be made whole, to be made complete.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: And we also realize that men don't form deep relational affections well.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: But it's in the heat of battle that men do form friendships.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: And so, in the sense we're very missional, we're the network for guys that are really too busy to be a part of a network because they're about their calling.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: But we just try to bring people together, either physically in events that we hold or virtually, and we're rolling out a platform that will help us connect more virtually, uh, that allows us to have a sense of we're locking arms together and locking arms together, even though we may or may not know each other real well.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: But we're friends.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Jesus said, greater love has no man than this, than a man lay down his life for his friends.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: And so the best way we can show love is to walk arm in arm with our friends.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: And that's what we're seeking to do, is help strengthen friendships and help turn strangers into friends for the long haul.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: And so hence our vision, that's sort of our our means and our our thesis is that as men around the city form deep friendships across racial and intergenerational lines and across social lines, that that love amongst friends will really transform our city, indeed, to one where everybody, man, woman, children, are known and loved.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: So that's where Citizen 7 Indy is landed as a brand, and we hope now to aspire to uh be all that that brand means.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: I can I can see your eyes lighting up as you speak about C7.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: It's so amazing.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And I think you've been a you call yourself a venture catalyst.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Um well before I go into that, can you explain also what is a venture catalyst?
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Because I think most people know what a venture capitalist is.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: What is a venture catalyst?
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Well, it's sort of a play on words, in a sense, it plays to what I believe God has given me a strength to leverage uh in this enterprise.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: But yes, I'm not much of a venture capitalist because my financial capital is very slim.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: But I do have a lot of social capital that I've been able to build here in the city and outside of the city.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: And I am a catalyst uh which basically encompasses two features that are some of the strengths that uh I've been seeking to leverage.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: One is a connector, so seeking to connect people, seeking to connect financial capital, connect ideas, connect friends together, and then the second facet is galvanize them.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: So connect and galvanize.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Those are the strengths that I seek to use.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And under that umbrella, venture catalyst, I use the word venture, of course, because I like seeing various projects and ventures take root, be established, and grow.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: And so I call myself a venture catalyst, sort of as a play on words, uh, but it gets people's attention, and I hope to aspire to both connect and then galvanize for action around meaningful projects that change the city.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: And how do you define the word galvanize?
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Galvanize is when it in the heat, if you look at uh how chemical or a yeah, chemical reaction takes place.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: That's a sort of the underpinning of galvanization.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: It's when you take heat or some kind of external force that brings together metal.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: For example, you galvanize metal.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: It's like fusion almost.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: It fuses them together for the purpose it's intended to accomplish.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: So my connection, then I help not only just connect people, but I'm spotting, oh, these people over here, they need an extra boost or a nudge going that way.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Let me see what I can do to get them moving that way.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Maybe they need another connection, maybe they need an infusion of financial capital.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: So galvanization is both connecting and then animating them towards the goal that they're called to achieve.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Even though you're not from the city, you've I I think you've definitely been very successful in connecting and being a catalyst, connecting so many different people to different resources, uh, financial resources, social resources.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: And ultimately, I'm curious how did you A come to meet Don Palmer and how has that relationship specifically played a role in your life?
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: That's a great question because I just love Don Palmer.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Uh I met him right when I moved to Indianapolis back in the early 80s.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Uh he was not married, I wasn't married at the time, but we never connected in a we were never galvanized together, if I can use that word.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: But I went to a Bible study as how some a mutual friend invited me, and we just sort of knew each other uh superficially that way.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: It wasn't until many, many years later after we had married our wives, after we had had children, and then Don and I reconnected just in the natural course of both carrying the same passion, the same aspiration to do good here in this city.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: And uh Don asked me uh to mentor 15 at-risk kids in one of the schools in urban Indy, a KIPP school, it's a charter school, and I was delighted to do so.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: And the reason that we were able to have that conversation, I mean to serve and mentoring, is that we had already come together as men in a small men's group.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: And that's why I'm really uh adamant that men form small, committed groups where you talk, you do life together.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: And Don and I were a part of that.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: We still are after all those years.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: And so we started mentoring.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: That was our trenches, that was our mission, is to work together to serve those kids.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: But Tony, here's the secret I didn't know those kids.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: And I told Don, I'm doing it not primarily for those kids, but I'm doing it because we're friends and I care for you.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: And that I learned a big lesson there because I didn't know the kids.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I couldn't honestly tell the kids, I love you.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: No, I did, but I didn't know them when I first started, but I knew Don.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: And the lesson is this, Tony love pours out of where you already are.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: That's why Jesus said, love your neighbor as yourself.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: It doesn't start with your neighbor.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Where does it start?
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: With yourself.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So with Don, it had to start there.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: And I said, Don, I'm gonna do this because we're friends and I want to grow this friendship, and I care for you.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: And I know that the overflow of our friendship will pour into those boys' lives.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: And it did.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: We did it for a few years.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: It was beautiful.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: My friendship with Don is still intact.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: I don't know those boys anymore.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: We we stopped mentoring, we moved on to different things.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: Well, they moved on, you know, they graduated from the middle school.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: And so we don't have contact with those boys, but Don and I still do.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: And we put and we believe that our love for each other and care for each other actually impacted those boys.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: And I can tell you great stories about our times with those boys.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: It was beautiful.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: In fact, another friend of Don's joined us, so two became three, and out of that really is the genesis of Citizen Seven, because now three has become 450.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: But Don and I go way back.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: We're still together as mutual friends, we're still part of our committed group of men.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: There's about eight men in this small group that have been together for decades, and uh it's been a joy to serve him in Indy together and collectively that the overflow of our friendship affect those around us.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: What initially sparred you to start C7 and what was your vision at the beginning versus now?
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Did you envision having 450 people, or did you just envision it being eight, nine, ten people, men coming together, Christian men and building and serving what I can?
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we just thought it'd be a small group, and we had no sense of where we were going.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: Citizen 7 is not an organization, so we never had a strategy session, you know, with a vision, mission.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we were just friends.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: And we still are an organization.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Uh we're just a loose network of friends.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, Don and I are at the core, but we're seeking to see the next generation come up and take on leadership here in the city that way.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: So to answer your question, we had no vision at the outset, no sense of how how many guys.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: In fact, now we have since the flywheel's starting to spin, uh we're thinking maybe it'll grow to a thousand or or more because of the way networks work.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: You get that flywheel spinning, you get the core spinning, and it just starts to move exponentially, not linear, but exponentially.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: So we had no uh aspiration or sense.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: We just wanted to spread love.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: And we wanted excuse me, we wanted friendships created.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: And that that's all the vision we had.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: The numbers, we didn't have a clue.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: But it's been great, and we hope to now continue to uh see it, see the flywheel spin, see more groups of friends spun out, be encouraged in the city, and and the city really get a vibe about it, that across racial uh church lines, denominational lines, lines that keep people apart, that would be very uh inclusive that way.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: And I think that's that's the power of God, right?
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Is everyone in C7 a Christian uh leader, whether it's nonprofit or entrepreneur, is that basically the gist of it?
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: That that's not certainly our ultimate mission.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: I know we would love for people, of course, to follow Jesus.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: We love everybody too.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: But we welcome everybody.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: At the core, we are following Jesus.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Our why is Jesus.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: When people say, why are you doing this?
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Our why is because of Jesus Christ.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: We're called to spread his love, we're called to tell people there's good news, we're called to have a hope, an answer for the hope that lies within us.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Our hope isn't Jesus Christ.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: That no matter how much horrible stuff is going on in the world, how much division there is, how much hatred, how much evil, that's guaranteed.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: The Bible tells us so, and it's empirically validated by what we see and live all over.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: But that's not the end game.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: We know that Jesus is calling his people to himself.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: And as he calls his people to himself, he's empowering them to go and co-create with him a new heavens, a new earth under his power.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: And that's why one day we look forward to being with him in that new heavens and new earth that he's making, but he's doing it with us.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: One of my favorite scripture verses is Romans 8.28.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: For we know that God works all things together for good, with those who love him, who are called according to that purpose.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: What purpose?
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: His good pleasure, his good.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: We're after his good, not after our good.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: And that's how we can welcome everybody.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: We love, we truly, we love everyone.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: And we want so if someone's not a Christian, whatever religious faith they have or non-religious faith, wherever they're coming from, we want to be able to encourage guys.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Now, we do have special uh eyes out for guys that want to make stuff happen.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: If someone wants to take and extract, a lot of networks do that.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: You already networking events, what can I get from this guy?
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Ooh, is he a business contact?
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: Is this and this?
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: We don't mind if that happens, but it's downstream.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: It's relationships and friendships first.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: If you aren't willing to be generous, to make friends, to encourage friends, then that's not who we are as a network.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Downstream from that, what happens?
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: I know of lots of business partnerships that have emerged out of Citizen Seven.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: But it's friendship and fun first.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: And then those other things are very, very secondary to it.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: So that's really where we're coming from.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Our wise Jesus.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: We want to share love as friends, want to grow love, and then ultimately we want to see that in all sectors of the city, in neighborhoods, in businesses, in non-for-profits, in schools, everywhere everywhere, in government, right?
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Wherever it might be.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Sweeping the street, taking out the trash, right, being at home with a sick kid, whatever it is, right.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: It reminds me of the quote that we just spoke about before the podcast where I said I had a friend of mine who said, we each have our own, we each have the same purpose, which is to serve God.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: But we each have our own calling, which is it might be to take care of your children.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: It might be to sleep garbage off and it might not give you as much glory or praise as someone who is an entrepreneur who does have a seven, eight, nine, whatever number figure business.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: And I think that oftentimes we can see them as better.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: We can we can almost in a way i d uh idolize them, but ultimately the person who's sweeping the street is just as important as a person who has that nine-figure business.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: They just have different callings for God.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: And that's right.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Have you been downtown?
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Seen the street sweepers in those yellow protective vests?
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: When some of them smile at you when you walk by, man, that's worth its weight in gold.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: You can't buy that.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: I don't care how much money you have in the back, that smile lights up life.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: That's we're seeking in everyone.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: For no one to be ashamed of their position in life, but that you're you're with God, you're with Jesus, you're with each other.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: You can share that love.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: That cannot be bought.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: It's already been bought by Jesus.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: He paid the price.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: So everything else is off the table.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: All he's equipped us by his spirit to be and do is to be agents of his love and by that love.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: And that means maybe a smile, maybe it's a tear.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: It isn't always, you know, it's rough going.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: There's pain in our lives.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's crying, weeping with those who weep and rejoicing with those who rejoice.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: I do believe that it's easy to be contradictory or be hypocritical.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Um when you are at a higher level, it's easy to say, yes, we're equals and all that, but that's right.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: When you're when you are that street sweeper, that's right.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: What words of advice would you give that street sweeper who feels like, man, I want to be up there, but I'm I'm I'm down here sleeping the streets.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: I feel like my life, I don't have a calling, I don't have a purpose.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: How can you do that?
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: My advice is this, Tony.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: That's a great question.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Love the one you're with.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: No one can stop the power of love.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: You start where you are.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: I've had people say, Oh, if only I had this and this and this.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Jesus said, be content with whatever you have.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: That's the scene.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: You turn one penny into two.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: You it's that's much better than not than losing a thousand or not turning a thousand to a thousand one.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: You see what I'm saying?
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: It's that return on investment.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: You turn one penny into two, you love the one you're with, that's how you start.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: And you know what?
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Then you have to stop worrying, you have to stop being envious about where that future leads because the secret is to just be in the moment, loving the one you're with.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: That's the beauty of life.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: That's how life grows.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: That's how flowers and trees emerge.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: They aren't thinking about what they're gonna be downstream, right?
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: They're just right there being.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: I love Psalm chapter one.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Do you know Psalm 1?
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: Where the psalmist talks about being like a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth fruit in its season, and its leaf will not wither.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: That's where we are.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: We are in Christ, we are in the vine, and we're just called to pull where we're planted.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: That's how you start.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: And you know what?
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: That's how you finish.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Everything else, you don't have to worry about it.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: God says every day to me, I got this.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just have to believe.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: And I don't always believe it.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: I worry and fret, stress.
- 19:15unknown: Uh-uh.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: God said, I got this right.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Will you surrender?
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Start surrendering.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: That's how you start.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: Start just being who you are, surrender to him.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: You know, let him do as he wishes.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: I've actually experienced that in my own life where I've for some time I had trouble speaking with God.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Um, I had to speak with a man of God in order to speak to them, uh to speak through through them to God.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: And recently, just very, very recently, within the last couple weeks, I've been able to speak with God.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Um, and man, he's been answering prayers uh left and right, but I do think that, and I I did a speech on this the other day, I think that oftentimes we when we do achieve success, um, which I think can be defined in so many different ways, but let's say material success, that can really, it in a sense it can destroy your relationship with God, it can destroy your relationship with others, you can really start to uh destroy your own relationship with yourself because it can become your identity.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: And then I think of the book of Job, when if you ever lose that, it's like, man, I I'm a servant of God first and foremost, but oftentimes we get that confused, and it's like, man, no, I'm I'm an I'm an entrepreneur, I'm gonna build this and this and that.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: And whoever's in my way, I don't care.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: You I it's it's uh it's a redemptive um framework.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: There's an ethical uh I win, you uh no, that's an exploitative.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Attack the exploitative, right?
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: I win, you lose, you attack that.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, and then the ethical is I win, you win.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: And then Jesus calls us beyond the ethical.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: We baseline the ethical and we move where we actually practice what quote creative restoration through sacrifice.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: I may have to lose in order for you or all of us in the long run to win.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: That's the redemptive edge.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: And that's I I was in the conversation about that earlier this this morning, and we were talking about how in reality it's much, much, much harder than it sounds.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Because I lose.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: So you're telling me I'm gonna wake up, I'm gonna go into my business, I'm gonna go throughout my day, and I'm gonna keep the mindset that I'm gonna lose.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: And that's that's just not the mindset that most entrepreneurs have.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: And that's right.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: So, do you have any specific examples of the redemptive framework?
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: I'm thinking of a friend, Fred Smith, who started the gathering.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: He was with Bob Buford when Bob was working on his book based on his life journey.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: His but Buford's book is called From Success to Signal.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: I highly recommend it if you haven't read it.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: Most of us are after that success that you're talking about.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: I want to be successful in the old size.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: And then many, when they get that golden ring, they realize, oh, this is empty.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: This wasn't, this is not success.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: This is what everyone told me was success.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: All the money, all the women, all of us, all that.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Because, uh-uh.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: And so then they say, I want to live a significant life.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: And then they start to live a life of significance, which is loving others and caring for others.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Well, Fred told us just a few months ago is uh what Bob realizes that it's important that journey from success to significance.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: But that's not the ultimate step that he's on.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: We are called to move from significance to surrender.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: That's the example.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: That's like that word surrender, so important.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Even Jesus, my God, my God, my wife forsaken me was on the cross.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: But before the cross, what was the prayer in Ghostemane?
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Not my will, but your will be done.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: He had to surrender before he could give his life.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: And so that is the theological example.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: That's a practical example of a famous author writing a mega seller for success to significance.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: He actually started an organization called Halftime to help people move from success to significance.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: But now what we're called is beyond significance, beyond impact, beyond return on impact to surrender.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: We're called the return on mercy, if I can use that.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Because to be merciful means you often have to give up.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: You have to sort of put your dreams aside in order to forgive the one who's offended you, in order to care, like the Good Samaritan did for the Jewish man who'd been beaten up and robbed and accosted.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: He had to stop.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: He had to pay attention to him.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: He had to take care of his needs.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: So just in life, I'll tell you, in, you know, we're all in families, right?
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: We're all born of parents and we all have uh our own families.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: That's where my own sacrificial journey, not that I'm beating, you know, praising myself.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: I'm not giving myself props, but in the crucible of family, uh you realize that you have to give up, oftentimes your dreams, oftentimes your time, your money, whatever it is, in order to serve your spouse, your children, uh, your parents, your elder aging parents.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: Uh you have to be willing to surrender for them.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: And I I mean, there's many some examples.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: I I don't want to cite any right now because none like poignant ones come to my head, but I'm just feeling it in my body.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Like that's where that's where surrender starts, is in your family.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Again, love the one you're with.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Well, you start with those closest to you and then your neighbors.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Um I remember in various uh you know business engagements.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Uh, I was at Eli Lilly in a large corporation, a fantastic company.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: I'm just honored to be able to work there almost 30 years.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Uh but there were there were times in the workplace where, to your point, Tony, uh I got a little envious at times.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Hey, how come that person got that promotion?
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: You know, how come that person is able to do that project?
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: I'm better suited, right?
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: I'm better suited for that.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: I should have that promotion.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Pride.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Pride gets in the way of that.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: And then to say no, instead of being envious of that person, you know what I'm gonna do?
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna bless them.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna bless them, I'm gonna help that person be the best they can be in that role they have, with that project they have.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: As a uh a manager of people for most of my career, I made it an important part of every employee's performance review.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: That not only did they have to achieve as an individual contributor, but part of their work was to help their colleague do better.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: And I rewarded them and incentivized them on not only their personal work, but how are they helping their colleague who they could be envious of?
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: How are they helping them achieve more?
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: You see what I'm saying?
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: So that's an example of that redemptive sacrificial edge, is practicing it myself and then incentivizing within the culture of my organization those kinds of behaviors.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: How can you shift your mindset from envy to help or to assisting people that have what you feel like is should be yours?
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: Well, it's almost impossible.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: It is impossible.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: You've heard of survival of the fittest, right?
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: There's a reason for survival of the fittest.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: I gotta survive.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: I gotta do it.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: Here's the secret take a lifeboat, a ship that's sinking.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Take my own life.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: I would I can now that I remember, I almost drowned when I was 18 years old in a riptide in the Pacific Ocean.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: Okay, no one came to help me.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: But I thought about this afterwards is that sometimes, do you know what a riptide is?
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: When there's an undertow in the ocean, the way the water's coming, and even though on top it might look smooth, underneath it's dragging you out to sea, and you cannot get back in.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that as an 18-year-old rookie, my freshman year of college, Southern California, at this beach.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: So uh the when you if I if I and I and I won't go into the story of how I was saved and made it back, but no one came to save me.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: But I realized afterwards that if someone had tried to come to save me, they may have drowned.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: In fact, we both would have drowned.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: So here's the secret that's why Jesus said, love your neighbor as yourself.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: You can only care for someone if you're caring for yourself.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: You have nothing to give someone unless you have received and been given and received it.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: So that's the secret to living a life of sacrifice is to be able to give what you've received.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: If you haven't received it, you don't have it to give.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: You have nothing to sacrifice.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: So to attack envy, you have to realize that that person has been given, and they've been given responsibility for that, and they have uh a mandate to use that well.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: I should be able to help them instead of instead of letting them drown, I should be willing to help them steward that appropriately because it leads to all of our good.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: If I'm not the the big head honcho at the company, but they do super well, well, hallelujah.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: I've been able to help them because we all rise together that way.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: And so, in that sense, I've just been thinking more about, and I've had to repent of this.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: I haven't received well.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: And because I haven't received well, I haven't been able to give well.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: And if you can't give well and you haven't received well, guess where you're stuck?
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Envy.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: All you can do is wish.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, I wish I had that.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: So, I had there's no magic bullet, but it's humanly impossible.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: But it comes back to ultimately being able to receive with the premise that you're called to give what you've received.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: That's that's what God's word says will conquer.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Have you looked at the Ten Commandments?
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: I have.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: I'm um brushing up on them right now.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: I'm actually joining a discipleship group that's gonna be throughout the year and um looking forward to working my way through the Bible because I'm actually in that this I'm glad you brought that up because I'm uh I was kind of on my my heart and I always feel like the Holy Spirit is leading me to, I feel like they're not my words, but the Holy Spirit leading me.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: Um and so what was on my mind just now is when I first came to God, which is only less than half a year ago, um, I struggled with finding my way, like I said, just just recently, a couple weeks ago, I learned how to speak with God.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: How how what do you recommend to those who are encouraged by talks like this or encouraged by I had a couple people that really spoke into me, and um how can they take that first step to developing a relationship with Christ?
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: Goes back to the Ten Commandments.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: People think of God's law as a hammer, as judgment.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: It judges you, it's it speaks reality, but go the Ten Commandments speak to God Himself, how beautiful God He is.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: You can sum as you go through the Ten Commandments, here's how I've summarized them: don't steal, don't take.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: From honoring God, not making idols all the way down, and you trigger me by saying the envy piece, don't covet, don't don't want to take, don't commit adultery, don't want to take.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: It's all it's all taking.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: You see, that's our human need.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: That sorry, that is what we do as humans in our sin is we take, we take, we take what's not ours.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: So I'll summarize it for you.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: Don't take.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: What's the opposite of don't take?
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: Give.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: See, that's where that's love.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: So I you you asked, where do you start to really come to know Jesus?
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: He's there waiting for you, Tony.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: And he's saying, Come, drop your nets and follow me.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: That's what he said to his disciples who were fishermen.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: A few of them were fishermen.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Drop your nets.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: Don't take, you know, just follow me.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: But you have to give.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: Well, they had to give their livelihood.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: You have to take the leap of faith.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: You had to actually walk out on the water there.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: But he said, drop your nets.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: He said, give.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: That's all you have.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: He didn't ask for millions of dollars.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: He wasn't out passing the plate, begging for money.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: He said, give up what you already have.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: And give up what you're holding on to for your security.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: In this case, your economic security.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Give.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: That's how you start following Jesus.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: You give up what's been holding you back from relationship with him, following him on that grand adventure.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: That's step number one.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: And you're right.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: How do you do that?
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: It's by faith.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: It's by grace through faith that we are rescued by Jesus Christ, following him.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: And so it's his grace that is given to us by faith in him.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: To say, Lord, I surrender to you.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: Faith is surrendered.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: I surrender to you.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: I give up.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: What's keeping me in charge of this?
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: I'm letting go.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: And uh I'm seeking just to plot after you step by step.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: That's the first step.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Baby step.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: There's nothing more difficult than that.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: Are you familiar with the book with God?
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: I've read on it.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: I've read with.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: I went through a Mets guy.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: You have Mets Guy?
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, way back in the day.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: He was a good one.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: I haven't had the honor to meet him yet, but I uh I went through a video series with a men's group I'm a part of last month, and I think that's something that people and I know I have personally gotten confused by that before because, like you said, a lot of people take the Ten Commandments as a hammer.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: God's hammering you, but that's in reality you're with God.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: The Ten Commandments just reveal who God is.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: You want to know someone?
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: Well, they need to reveal to you.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: That's what God's doing.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: I'm a God of integrity.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: I'm a God who's whole.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: I'm a God who's alive.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Hence, don't take.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: That's as simple as that.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: But we you're right.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: We we get involved with, oh, we got these check boxes.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't do this, I didn't do this, I didn't do this, oh, I blew it there.
- 34:17unknown: No.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: Talk to me about.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: You said you had an issue previously with an inability to receive.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Can you talk about that?
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, pride.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: I don't need I don't need to take that.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: I got enough.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: I'm doing it my own way.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: I've especially sinned in this regard with my wife.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: She's had so much to give me.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: And I have often, not maliciously.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, this, and it's oftentimes unintentionally, I just haven't fully received all the love that she's she's had for me.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: And I've sorrowfully had to repent of that.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: And continue, you know, I'd we need to be open to receiving all that God has for us.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: And what that relationship with my wife, Shobi, Tony, is that's true with God.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: I've squelched him.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: What's what does the the scripture say in the New Testament?
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: Do not quench the spirit.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: Do you know what that phrase means?
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Don't quench the spirit.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: It means the spirit has get has life available ready for you.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: Quenching means you quench the flame, you shut him out, you block him out.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: Don't quench the spirit.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: Receive him fully.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: We talk as Christians sometimes about receiving Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: We don't know what it means to receive him fully.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm talking about.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: And it took my wife to show me that it took other things too.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: I'm not a good receiver.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: We have to receive.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: To whom much is given, much is required.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: I think we purposely oftentimes don't receive because we know that we're required to give it back.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: And we don't like that.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: Human nature is if I got it, it's mine.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: You better not take it from me.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm not going to give it to you.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: It's mine to use.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: That's the vicious cycle that we find ourselves in.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: So I'm seeking, I had never read much or seen a lot of material on how to receive better.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: Check it out sometime, Google it.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: I bet you'll find very little on how to receive well.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: So that's one of my pet aspirations is to live that out.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying I'm going to write a book around that.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying, Greg Guinness, you better, you better be a good receiver because there's no giving unless you've received.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: I think it can definitely be easier to give than it can be to receive.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: I think of tiny stuff where, you know, I'll go out for a breakfast meeting and don't pay, and I feel guilty.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: It almost makes you feel like you're not being a man by allowing another man to pay for you.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: It also reminds me of a pastor we were talking about earlier, Ken Johnson, who he had uh told a group that I'm another man's group I'm a part of with him.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: He had told us uh late last year that there was a guy who he knew who had lots of money but uh didn't really live his life redemptively, and he was on his death, and he's looking to give back, and he asked him, How much money do you need uh for what you're trying to do, the purpose you're trying to fulfill?
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: And obviously, as a pastor, it's like I I can take all the money I need, like all the money I can get, because I can I have so many different projects I can do.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: But Ken Johnson told him$10,000.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: And so he gave him$10,000, but then before he left, he told him uh he told him, next time, tell me the real amount.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: And I think that in a sense, what I've found is that being or feeling nervous, feeling guilty in a way, can sometimes act as a good thing.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: Because I feel that when you are nervous, when you are in a sense feeling guilty, you that's because you know you're gonna actually do good with it.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: Because if if if I wasn't nervous, then that means I don't care.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: If I if I walk into doing a speech in front of 10,000 people and I'm not nervous, then that just means I don't care.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: Patrick Mahomes isn't nervous before the Super Bowl, even though he's a superstar, he's gonna lose the game.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: Right, that's right.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: But to on this point, you start by receiving.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: But Jesus said it is better to give than receive.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: See, it's always receiving with a view towards, again, giving.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: It's a view towards taking the little that you have and exponentially seeing it grow and giving that.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: That's always the view to give.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: It's better to give.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: It's not saying it's bad to receive.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: You have to receive first, but it's then better to give than to receive.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Do you feel that at this point in your life you are balanced with your giving and your receiving?
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: I'm seeking, I'm more balanced than I was a year ago.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: I'm more balanced than I was two years ago.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: But Tony, I have a long ways to go.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: Pray for me in that way.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: I'm seeking to grow in that manner.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: And I appreciate you sharing your transparency because you are the leader of C7 with Don.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: And so people see you as a leader, and people see you as maybe glorious, and people can maybe even idolize you, but you coming here today and being transparent, it really shows the people that hey, I'm I'm a human being too.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: I'm a sinner too.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: I'm imperfect too.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: I'm not, I'm I'm not God, I'm not Jesus.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: I give glory to Jesus.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: So I I appreciate your transparency today.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: Well, Tony, it's been a blessing to talk with you.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: It truly uh Jesus is everything.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm I'm going down with Jesus, you know.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: Uh I often my faith is small.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Often I shake my fist at God, why are you doing it this way?
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: Why are you allowing me to walk through this valley of the shadow of death?
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: Okay?
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: But I'm going with him because where else can I go?
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: As you read the New Testament, you'll find out Peter said that.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: Who has words of eternal life?
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: Jesus asked.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: Peter said, where else can't we go for eternal life?
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: Ultimately, at the end of the day, I don't care if you're Nietzsche or, you know, who he lived a tragic life, but he he died, knows some things really well.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: It's important to read him.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: You know, he brought some things to light, but you know, he died a tragic death.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: Uh just, you know, just despond and depressed that way.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: Peter said, where else can we go for eternal life?
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: We can only go with Jesus.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: You won't get it from the national elections, you won't get it from your job, for how much money you have, how how big your house is.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: Ultimately, it's in the one who made you.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: Because he made you and me beautiful.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: And you and I are different, physically, right, whatever way.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: We're both beautiful in this light, made in the image of God.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: And that's what I'm banking on is to just be true to the image he's made us.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: I tell people, be the person that God designed you to be.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: You don't have to make yourself up to impress that person.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: You don't have to change yourself to impress this other person or feel good about yourself.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: I just heard yesterday that there was an app that parents could buy likes for their teenagers who didn't get enough likes on social media and they were despondent.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: You know, and there's so much struggle now with social media and the mental distortions and shame and depression that's going on.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: And I heard about this that, yeah, hundred bucks, get a hundred likes.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: You know, kind of this can you believe?
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think I can believe that.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: But that's not exploited.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: That's that's exploited.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Jesus says it's about love.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: Don't worry about anyone else.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: You be the person I designed you to be.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, go for it.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: And you, in order to do that though, you have to follow him.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: You can't do that on your own.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: You can only be the person God's created to be if you're with the creator.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: That's the secret.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: You're back to your word with.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: I love that part.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: So, if you can give one last final piece of actionable advice to the audience, no matter how old, no matter how young, no matter what race, no matter where they are in their career or life, what would that piece of advice be?
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: Wow, it's probably the piece of advice I have to remind myself of all the time.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: On the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: Everything else will be added to you.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: Keep the main one, the main thing.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: Seek first his kingdom.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: So you ask, well, where's his kingdom?
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: It's where the king is.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Who's the king?
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: Jesus is.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: He's the king of the universe.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: In him, Paul said in Colossians, everything consists.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: And as we explore, I'll be dead and gone before we find out truly what quantum mechanics and quantum theory is.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: We're finding out all these really wild, nonlinear patterns and trends in the universe.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: And every time we look, the universe is bigger than we thought it was.
- 43:50unknown: Wow.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: Hey, it's beautiful.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Let's explore that.
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: Jesus holds it all together.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: You know, and so that's the advice I give you seek him.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: Seek the king.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Go where the king is.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: My little back to Citizen Seven as we close out here in Indianapolis, I go where the love is.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: That's where I want to be.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: I want to go where God's love is.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: And where it isn't, I want to be that love there.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: That's why we want this city permanent with love.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: It starts in our homes.
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: It starts by me loving my life as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: By me loving my kids.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: The overflow of our home, being hospitable, caring for our neighbors, bringing people in, sending people out, helping the little old lady next door, whatever it is.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Stopping and helping a guy on the street with a flat tire if that's difficult.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: Not that you have to.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: I'm not talking being a do-gooder.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: I'm talking about that the love that you've received.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: I'm going where the love is, Tony.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: And that's what I tell people to do.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: Don't be discouraged.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: Don't fret.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: You're losing your job.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: You're losing your relationship.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: You're losing this, you're losing that.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: You'll never lose Jesus.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: That means you'll never lose love.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: You'll never stop him loving you.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:05unknown: Yeah.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: I think that's one of the most important things is not doing it to be a do-gooder, but doing it because you want to.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: Out of gratitude.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: Out of gratitude.
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: He loved us so much.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: That's the least we can do is just love those that we're with.
- 45:23unknown: Yeah.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: This has been the Reborn Podcast with Greg Enos.
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: Greg's, as you can see, a leader, a visionary, a venture catalyst.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: But most importantly, as you can see from this episode, he's a man of God, and I'm personally looking forward for all of you guys to see this episode and being able to develop a relationship personally with Greg uh throughout the next few years and developing a relationship with C7 and all these amazing blessings that God has blessed me with, and uh that God has blessed Greg to be able to lead.
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: So, with that being said, Greg, thank you so much for being here.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: Well, you're welcome, Tony.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: It's been a pleasure.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: Thank you for inviting me, and thank you for being open and available to how God is and will use you uh here.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: Thank you for your friendship, too.
