- 0:00Speaker 1: And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord,
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel,
- 0:07Speaker 1: who delivered them, even Othniel, the son of Canaz, Caleb's
- 0:12Speaker 1: younger brother. Judges 3.9 Dear God, as I meditate on
- 0:19Speaker 1: today's reading of Judges 2-3, I ask, Lord, that you
- 0:24Speaker 1: make me like the mighty men and women of Judges.
- 0:27Speaker 1: who were used to deliver your children from the hands
- 0:30Speaker 1: of the enemy. Quicken my heart and strengthen my hands
- 0:35Speaker 1: so that I can take on the honor of being
- 0:39Speaker 1: used to bring freedom and breakthrough to those who are
- 0:42Speaker 1: hurting and in bondage. Raise me up like Othniel. Let
- 0:48Speaker 1: your spirit come upon me as I continue to win
- 0:51Speaker 1: battles and take territory for your kingdom. Next, I thank
- 0:57Speaker 1: you that you are giving me the boldness of Ehud
- 1:01Speaker 1: so that I can face my oppressor head on and
- 1:04Speaker 1: without fear. Give me divine strategy today so that I
- 1:09Speaker 1: know where my enemy's weak points are. Thank you for
- 1:14Speaker 1: inside information that will ensure the victory for me and
- 1:18Speaker 1: for all of your children. Shout out loud and declare
- 1:23Speaker 1: that you have given us complete victory over all of
- 1:27Speaker 1: our enemies. Thank you for rest and restoration. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Thank you for making prayer a priority in your day.

- 1:57Speaker 2: Rescuing Judges The generation of Joshua had passed, and Israel
- 2:03Speaker 2: made a home for themselves in their new land. The
- 2:06Speaker 2: gods of the other kingdoms surrounding Israel made their way
- 2:10Speaker 2: into their hearts, and they turned their backs on God.
- 2:14Speaker 2: In this story, we will learn how God heard the
- 2:17Speaker 2: cries of Israel, as He did once in Egypt. Only now,
- 2:21Speaker 2: instead of sending Moses, He sent His judges, mighty heroes
- 2:26Speaker 2: of great courage, inspired by the book of Judges.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:35Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In today's reading, we concluded
- 2:39Speaker 3: the story of Job and learned how God restored Job
- 2:42Speaker 3: to health and wealth, giving him more than even he
- 2:45Speaker 3: had lost. Today we return to the story of Israel.
- 2:49Speaker 3: The hearts of God's people have turned to other gods,
- 2:52Speaker 3: and rather than influencing the culture around them, they were
- 2:56Speaker 3: letting the pagan cultures, the They find themselves enslaved again.
- 3:06Speaker 3: It is the result of their unfaithfulness to God and
- 3:09Speaker 3: their forgetful hearts. But as we'll learn again today, God
- 3:14Speaker 3: is not about to abandon his children. He will hear
- 3:17Speaker 3: their cries and come to their rescue just in time.
- 3:21Speaker 3: So let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Truth had been forsaken. The generation that fought for the
- 3:29Speaker 2: promised land had passed away. God's mighty axe had been
- 3:34Speaker 2: buried and forgotten with the past. Now Israel lived in comfort,
- 3:39Speaker 2: sinning on the graves of those who bled before them.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Israel abandoned the Lord and adopted the gods of the natives.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Since they forsook God, all their military exploits went without victory.
- 3:51Speaker 2: In vain they marched to conquer new lands, but they
- 3:54Speaker 2: were left with heartache and bloodshed. Israel spiraled into a
- 3:58Speaker 2: whirlpool of defeat. They had forgotten that Israel's strength was
- 4:03Speaker 2: not in their military might, but in the sovereignty of God.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Weakened and distressed, Israel was vulnerable to outside attacks. Other
- 4:12Speaker 2: nations would descend upon the people and plunder them. Women
- 4:16Speaker 2: and children were stolen in the dead of night. Homes
- 4:19Speaker 2: were set ablaze, and their food and livestock was taken.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So God raised up mighty men and women of valor,
- 4:26Speaker 2: those who would save them and bring them out of oppression.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yet Israel would not bow to them. They whored themselves
- 4:33Speaker 2: to other gods and did only what seemed right in
- 4:36Speaker 2: their own eyes. Yet God would not relent in His
- 4:40Speaker 2: compassion over His people. When Israel descended into destruction and slavery,
- 4:45Speaker 2: God would send His heroes to save them. After delving
- 4:50Speaker 2: deep into the worship of other gods, Israel found themselves
- 4:54Speaker 2: overcome by Kushan. the king of Mesopotamia. Kushan's army took
- 5:00Speaker 2: Israel by force, and God's people found themselves once again enslaved.
- 5:05Speaker 2: For eight years they sat under the cruel reign of Mesopotamia.
- 5:10Speaker 2: The people of Israel cried out to God, begging him
- 5:13Speaker 2: to save them as he had thousands of times before.
- 5:16Speaker 2: God did not ignore their cries. He raised up his
- 5:20Speaker 2: first judge, Othniel, the nephew of Caleb. The Spirit of
- 5:25Speaker 2: God was with Othniel. The same burning intensity Joshua once
- 5:29Speaker 2: had came upon him. Othniel gathered men from all over
- 5:33Speaker 2: Israel to raise a resistance. For weeks he plotted, schemed,
- 5:37Speaker 2: and strategized. Othniel was a man of few words. He
- 5:42Speaker 2: was a man of the sword and exactly what Israel needed.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Othniel stood at the top of a valley in front
- 5:49Speaker 2: of Kushan's army. Weeks of preparing had led him to
- 5:53Speaker 2: this moment. The air was cold, and the piercing wind
- 5:57Speaker 2: of winter blew from the north. Othniel was silent. As
- 6:02Speaker 2: lightning with thousands of Israelite soldiers behind him, Othniel stormed
- 6:06Speaker 2: the city of their oppressors. Blood scattered across the sky
- 6:10Speaker 2: above them. Israel had its first taste of true victory
- 6:15Speaker 2: in years. They were free. God had gone before them,
- 6:19Speaker 2: and Othniel was judge over Israel for forty years until
- 6:23Speaker 2: he died. After forty years of peace under Othniel's leadership,
- 6:29Speaker 2: the people of Israel fell prey to their old devices.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Slowly and gradually, their old idolatry crept back into their
- 6:37Speaker 2: lives and hearts. They let their guard down and became complacent.
- 6:42Speaker 2: While Israel rested, feasted among idols, and enjoyed their newfound freedom,
- 6:48Speaker 2: King Eglon from Moab gathered the Ammonites and the Amalekites
- 6:52Speaker 2: to overtake Israel. He succeeded, and for eighteen years his
- 6:57Speaker 2: cruelty and greed plagued the Hebrew people like a sickness.
- 7:02Speaker 2: The people of Israel cried out again to God, not
- 7:05Speaker 2: knowing that he was already raising up a young man
- 7:08Speaker 2: named Ahud from the tribe of Benjamin. He was a
- 7:12Speaker 2: left-handed man, which was uncommon and looked down upon in
- 7:15Speaker 2: his time. Yet his skill as a warrior and master
- 7:18Speaker 2: of deception were exactly what the people of Israel needed.
- 7:22Speaker 2: So God provided. It was tradition for the people of
- 7:26Speaker 2: Israel to pay a tribute to King Eglon in his palace.
- 7:29Speaker 2: These tributes were large platters of food filled with meats, cheeses,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and grains, for Eglon was a large and slothful man.
- 7:37Speaker 2: He gorged on Israel's offerings and grew fat in both
- 7:41Speaker 2: mass and confidence. The people sent Ehud to pay the
- 7:45Speaker 2: tribute with a double-edged sword strapped to his right thigh.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Ehud brought in the tribute. Hail the king, he said.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I have brought you your tribute. Ehud then leaned over
- 7:57Speaker 2: to the king's side and whispered, I have secret news
- 8:00Speaker 2: from some spies in Israel, my king. Eglon's interest and
- 8:04Speaker 2: concern rose. He shooed away his guards and rose from
- 8:08Speaker 2: his seat to speak with Ehud. As Eglon rose from
- 8:11Speaker 2: his seat, Ehud unstrapped the sword from his thigh and
- 8:15Speaker 2: lodged it into Eglon's gigantic stomach in one motion. Eglon's
- 8:22Speaker 2: fat wrapped around the blade and closed it into his belly.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Entrails and dung came spewing out of Eglon as he
- 8:29Speaker 2: fell to the floor and died. Ehud drug the king's
- 8:33Speaker 2: massive body into his restroom. The guards heard a noise
- 8:37Speaker 2: and entered into the king's chambers. They heard a stirring
- 8:40Speaker 2: in the lavatory and did not want to bother the
- 8:43Speaker 2: king while he was relieving himself. While they delayed, Ehud
- 8:47Speaker 2: escaped through the hole where the excrement was released and
- 8:50Speaker 2: crawled to safety. Moments later, the guards opened the doors
- 8:54Speaker 2: to see the king dead on the floor. Ehud ran
- 8:58Speaker 2: past the temples to Sarai. When he arrived at the
- 9:02Speaker 2: right spot, he sounded a trumpet that echoed throughout the
- 9:05Speaker 2: entire hill country. As one wave, the Israelite army emerged
- 9:10Speaker 2: from the horizon and ran behind Ehud. They followed him,
- 9:14Speaker 2: and Ehud let out a battle cry, saying,' Follow me,
- 9:18Speaker 2: for the Lord has given them into our hand.' Ehud's
- 9:23Speaker 2: left-handed swings tore apart the flesh of the Moabite army.
- 9:27Speaker 2: One by one they fell, and hope in God was restored.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Ten thousand Moabites fell that day, all of them strong
- 9:36Speaker 2: and able-bodied soldiers. No one escaped. For eight years Ehud
- 9:41Speaker 2: protected the people of Israel, and there was peace in
- 9:44Speaker 2: the land. Yet danger and temptation lurked around every corner.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Ehud understood just as well as God that the peace
- 9:53Speaker 2: would not last. Soon, Israel would whore itself to other
- 9:58Speaker 2: idols again. and God, as a faithful groom, would do
- 10:03Speaker 2: anything to protect them.
- 10:08Speaker 3: In today's reading in God's Word, we begin with a
- 10:11Speaker 3: new generation of Israelites. This generation is different from those
- 10:17Speaker 3: who followed Joshua. Joshua's people were gone, but now the
- 10:22Speaker 3: people who had been living in comfort became complacent. They
- 10:26Speaker 3: turned to false gods, idols. They allowed the world around
- 10:31Speaker 3: them to infiltrate their daily lives, and the God of
- 10:34Speaker 3: their fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the
- 10:39Speaker 3: God of Moses and Joshua, these were a distant memory.
- 10:44Speaker 3: As always, rebellion and unbelief have consequences. God had warned
- 10:49Speaker 3: them that if they turned from him, they would not
- 10:52Speaker 3: experience victory, but only the bitterness and the brokenness of defeat.
- 10:58Speaker 3: And that's exactly what they experienced. In loss after loss
- 11:03Speaker 3: after loss, they became weaker and weaker as a nation.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Even though God sent them a godly leader, the Israelites
- 11:11Speaker 3: persisted in their rebellion until they were overcome by the
- 11:15Speaker 3: king of Mesopotamia, Kushan. And then the people were once
- 11:19Speaker 3: again under the rule of another. They were slaves in
- 11:22Speaker 3: a pagan nation. This was the price to be paid
- 11:25Speaker 3: for their sins against God. But God would not abandon
- 11:29Speaker 3: His people, and when they cried out to Him, He
- 11:31Speaker 3: brought a mighty warrior, a judge named Athoniel. He was
- 11:35Speaker 3: the nephew of Caleb, and he burned with zeal, a
- 11:38Speaker 3: zeal for God and a zeal for the people of God.
- 11:42Speaker 3: And so God began the time of the judges. Athoniel
- 11:47Speaker 3: raised up an army, and under God's protection, he led
- 11:49Speaker 3: them to victory over Hushan's army. They were once again free,
- 11:54Speaker 3: and for the next generation, this man led the people
- 11:57Speaker 3: as God's appointed judge. But as it happened after Joshua died,
- 12:02Speaker 3: once Othoniel was gone, the people rebelled against God again.
- 12:06Speaker 3: And so began a tragic pattern of turning from God,
- 12:10Speaker 3: facing defeat, turning back to God for help, and God helping.
- 12:16Speaker 3: The words in Judges 3.12 signal the refrain that will
- 12:19Speaker 3: repeat itself too many times in the years to come.
- 12:22Speaker 3: And the people of Israel again did what was evil
- 12:26Speaker 3: in the sight of the Lord. Rescue, rebellion, repentance, and return.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Before we too quickly judge the Israelites for their unfaithfulness,
- 12:38Speaker 3: let's consider how often we do the same thing when
- 12:41Speaker 3: we allow other gods to take over our hearts and
- 12:44Speaker 3: our minds. idols of the heart. We get caught up
- 12:47Speaker 3: in the world and rebel against God. But here's what
- 12:51Speaker 3: we know. Because of what Jesus Christ has done for
- 12:55Speaker 3: us on the cross and by the power of his resurrection,
- 12:59Speaker 3: God can redeem us, renew us, and restore us when
- 13:03Speaker 3: we repent of our sin and return to him. God
- 13:08Speaker 3: will respond and receive us because of what Christ has
- 13:10Speaker 3: done for us. we do need to remember that there
- 13:14Speaker 3: are consequences to our sins. And so when the people
- 13:18Speaker 3: once again turned against God again and again, they were
- 13:23Speaker 3: conquered by another nation. They cried out to God, and
- 13:27Speaker 3: God brought them a new judge, Ehud. Ehud courageously faced
- 13:32Speaker 3: the king of Moab and put him to the sword
- 13:34Speaker 3: before leading an army against 10,000 Moabite men, killing them all.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Once again, Faith in God and hope for the future
- 13:42Speaker 3: was restored. But once again, this would be only temporary
- 13:47Speaker 3: as the people would turn away. They would often lose
- 13:52Speaker 3: their faith and their faithfulness. But God was faithful to
- 13:55Speaker 3: his people, and he would not abandon them. And it's
- 13:59Speaker 3: a wonderful promise to know that God loves you, that
- 14:03Speaker 3: his plans for your life, even when you fail, when
- 14:05Speaker 3: you are fickle, and when you fall, if you will
- 14:08Speaker 3: return to him, and receive him through his son, Jesus Christ,
- 14:12Speaker 3: you can be forgiven and God will lift you up.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Dear God, thank you for your patience with us when
- 14:18Speaker 3: our hearts fall away and stray and our attentions drifts
- 14:22Speaker 3: to the gods of this world. Help us to come
- 14:25Speaker 3: back to you and to cry out to you for
- 14:28Speaker 3: your unending mercy and grace. We know this grace, this
- 14:32Speaker 3: mercy is available because of your son, Jesus, who died
- 14:36Speaker 3: on the cross for our sins and rose again that
- 14:39Speaker 3: we may have eternal life. It is in his name
- 14:42Speaker 3: that we pray.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Amen.
