- 0:13Speaker 1: This is Kevin Sports very Daily here bringing you the
- 0:16Speaker 1: Folkston and Hi Sports show right here on Radio Folkston.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Were with the extreme weather taking place, many of the
- 0:29Speaker 1: sporting contacts are in the sort of can't be asked mood,
- 0:34Speaker 1: including me. So I haven't got much sport to tell
- 0:37Speaker 1: you about, but we'll have plenty of great music on
- 0:39Speaker 1: the show.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I have got some cricket news.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I've got a report on last week's cliff Top Challenge,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and a few other odds and ends and snippets.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I'm going to chuck in. I was going to do
- 1:01Speaker 2: this on Saturday, but we had some guests in it.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It was so busy.
- 1:04Speaker 1: But last week there was five celebrities. Five famous celebrities
- 1:09Speaker 1: from the world of music had their birthdays, so we'd
- 1:11Speaker 1: be playing some of their tunes. So to start the show,
- 1:20Speaker 1: we have celebri number one, who recently celebrated her sixty
- 1:23Speaker 1: fifth birthday.
- 1:27Speaker 2: She's a South End supporter.
- 1:33Speaker 1: She used to be in a group called Yazoo. So
- 1:41Speaker 1: let's get this show on the road and listen to
- 1:44Speaker 1: a bit of Alison Moye and Love Resurrection.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Can do bigline day. What's which.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Alison Moye, Love Resurrection.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Nineteen eighty four.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Do you know what, that's one of my biggest regrets actually,
- 2:31Speaker 1: because Alison Moya was actually at the Least Kiffore many
- 2:35Speaker 1: years ago, and as a lot of shift workers can
- 2:39Speaker 1: sympathize with this, she was on at the Least Cliff
- 2:43Speaker 1: Fall probably on a Wednesday evening or something, and I
- 2:46Speaker 1: was working and I missed that, and she is one
- 2:49Speaker 1: of I've said this before on this show. I love
- 2:53Speaker 1: female singers with a strong voice, strong ballad singers, and
- 2:57Speaker 1: she certainly fits that category. That's the word, that category
- 3:02Speaker 1: is right.
- 3:03Speaker 2: So how are you doing out there? Are you coping
- 3:04Speaker 2: with this heat? Are you?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Are you loving it? Or you think a bit cooler? Please,
- 3:09Speaker 1: a bit cooler. Well, it has been a bit extreme.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I must admit that we were in Cyprus in May
- 3:16Speaker 1: time and it was pleasant and to be honest, it
- 3:19Speaker 1: wasn't as hot as this, but then we did have
- 3:21Speaker 1: the pool to jump into. Okay, So one game that
- 3:25Speaker 1: does like a bit of sunshine, but I don't know
- 3:27Speaker 1: whether it's this extreme is cricket. Now, it's nice to
- 3:31Speaker 1: have a nice sunny afternoon and watch a bit of cricket,
- 3:34Speaker 1: but the temperatures are still going to be very very
- 3:36Speaker 1: hot around the weekend, so I'm sure the games are
- 3:40Speaker 1: going ahead. So let's do some late cricket news now.
- 3:44Speaker 1: This is last week Folks on first eleven where they
- 3:47Speaker 1: traveled to Bickley Park near Bromley. They lost the toss
- 3:50Speaker 1: and were put into bat, but could only manage one
- 3:52Speaker 1: hundred and thirty three runs. Bickley Park then put one
- 3:56Speaker 1: hundred and thirty five on the scoreboard, winning the game
- 3:59Speaker 1: by six wicket. This coming Saturday they welcome Holmesdale from
- 4:03Speaker 1: seven Oaks to the Three Hill Sports Ground. Hawkins had
- 4:07Speaker 1: a good day at home with the bat, winning the toss,
- 4:10Speaker 1: deciding to bat, making the three hundred and twelve for five.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Westgate on Sea managed one hundred and fifty five all out,
- 4:17Speaker 1: but it was nowhere near enough and Hawkins won the
- 4:19Speaker 1: game by one hundred and fifty seven runs. This Saturday,
- 4:24Speaker 1: Hawkins are at home to of Faversham. I've also had
- 4:28Speaker 1: a good day at the crease. They were put into
- 4:30Speaker 1: bat by Saint Margaret's Cosmopolitan and made two hundred and
- 4:33Speaker 1: eighty for nine. They then skittled out the Cosmopolitan for
- 4:37Speaker 1: just eighty four runs and so won the game by
- 4:39Speaker 1: one hundred and ninety six. Saturday, Hi the visit at
- 4:43Speaker 1: Westgate on Sea. Iive Green a wonder toss at Tenadon
- 4:47Speaker 1: and put them into bat, making one hundred and fifty
- 4:50Speaker 1: three all out. The Green then made one hundred and
- 4:52Speaker 1: fifty five for four, winning the match by six wickets.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And this Saturday it's at home to Canterbury th third eleven.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Silwood lost the toss against north Down, who decided to
- 5:04Speaker 1: bat first, making two hundred and four all out. Silwood
- 5:07Speaker 1: could only manage one hundred and forty four so lost
- 5:10Speaker 1: the game by sixty runs. Saturday it's a local derby,
- 5:13Speaker 1: not too far to travel as they go to Merzam
- 5:17Speaker 1: Now in a low scoring game at Linton Park, batted
- 5:19Speaker 1: first against Sipton Park and made ninety.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Four all out.
- 5:23Speaker 1: The Sibs dismissed them for ninety five runs, losing just
- 5:27Speaker 1: five wickets along the way, but they won the match
- 5:30Speaker 1: by five wickets. On Saturday, Sibs are a way too,
- 5:34Speaker 1: which the ball's second team.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So there you have it.
- 5:36Speaker 1: The forecast doesn't look good if you're a spectator getting
- 5:40Speaker 1: the shade. And actually this tomorrow, actually Friday, Friday evening,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I'm off to Canterbury to watch a bit of T
- 5:49Speaker 1: twenty and we treated ourselves to some seats in the
- 5:52Speaker 1: stand and I'm not sure whether there's any shade there
- 5:55Speaker 1: or whether the sun will be belting down straight into it.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I really don't know.
- 6:00Speaker 1: This is the first time we've been in the shade
- 6:01Speaker 1: there in the stands there, so we're going to have
- 6:04Speaker 1: to wait and see.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Okay, now another birthday boy.
- 6:09Speaker 1: So this will be the second of our five birthday
- 6:12Speaker 1: musicians who have left their mark on the singing industry.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I mean you all remember this one. When it first
- 6:18Speaker 1: came out, they thought, who is that?
- 6:20Speaker 2: What does he look like? Is it a boy or
- 6:21Speaker 2: is it a girl?
- 6:22Speaker 1: Well, Boy George is actually sixty five now and at
- 6:26Speaker 1: the time he was joined by Culture Club and this
- 6:29Speaker 1: is probably his famous song, This is a Come a Chameleon.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Culture Club and frontman Boy George. They came to our
- 6:57Speaker 1: attention in the mid eighties, I think about eighty four
- 7:00Speaker 1: eighty three, and everybody thought, what on earth is this
- 7:04Speaker 1: lead singer doing.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Is it a boy? It says Boy George, But is
- 7:07Speaker 2: it a boy? Is it a girl? But I mean
- 7:09Speaker 2: he stood to test the time.
- 7:12Speaker 1: If anything, the way he dressed immediately you knew who
- 7:15Speaker 1: it was and you know what?
- 7:17Speaker 2: Where was it?
- 7:18Speaker 1: There was a fancy dress party up put the folks
- 7:21Speaker 1: in Rugby Club years ago and I thought, oh, what
- 7:24Speaker 1: can I go as it was a kind of a
- 7:26Speaker 1: pop theme, so I got a boy George outfit actually
- 7:30Speaker 1: and it suited me, I must say that. But when
- 7:33Speaker 1: I got there there was another boy George as well,
- 7:35Speaker 1: so there was two of us.
- 7:36Speaker 2: So we had a bit of a laugh about that. Okay.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Now if you remember a last Saturday, another Saturday before
- 7:43Speaker 1: I had two guests in the show, Chantelle and Phil Rashbrook.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And well, Saturday straight after last Saturdays, straight after the
- 7:52Speaker 1: sports show, I was off. I went to Deal for
- 7:55Speaker 1: the Cliff Top Challenge. Now, so let me remind you
- 7:59Speaker 1: just what exactly the Top Challenges. It's a trail run
- 8:02Speaker 1: and you can choose your distance either fifty five miles, yes,
- 8:07Speaker 1: fifty five miles, thirty six twenty six point two, the
- 8:10Speaker 1: Marrison distance fifteen ten or five miles now the fifty
- 8:16Speaker 1: five milers. They start near Hastings and they started at
- 8:20Speaker 1: two o'clock in the morning and everybody hopefully ends up
- 8:23Speaker 1: in Deal and it was a massive sellout eight hundred
- 8:26Speaker 1: runners taking part. Now the event has raised two hundred
- 8:30Speaker 1: and sixty thousand pound in before we started at the
- 8:34Speaker 1: last Saturday for breast cancer nour. I eventually got there
- 8:38Speaker 1: around about eleven forty five when absolutely amazed when a
- 8:42Speaker 1: fifty five mile runner came heading towards the finish line
- 8:45Speaker 1: at almost twelve o'clock on the dot midday. So let's
- 8:50Speaker 1: put this in perspective. It set off at two o'clock
- 8:52Speaker 1: Saturday morning to arrive almost exactly ten hours later, completing
- 8:57Speaker 1: at an average five and a half miles an hour.
- 9:00Speaker 1: But this is no ordinary terrain. Some of the hills
- 9:03Speaker 1: and trails are quite brutal, but it was an amazing
- 9:06Speaker 1: piece of endurance running. So then for the next four
- 9:09Speaker 1: hours we had runners from all the distances coming in
- 9:11Speaker 1: crossing the line.
- 9:14Speaker 2: We had live entertainment. It came from a soul choir.
- 9:16Speaker 1: There was a young lad called Jamie Reese who entertained
- 9:19Speaker 1: us playing the saxophone. Then a lively group of youngsters
- 9:22Speaker 1: called late to the function. They got everybody rooking. Now,
- 9:26Speaker 1: one particular runner, Jenny Heathfield, deserves a real special mention.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Last year she attempted the fifty five miler, but she failed,
- 9:34Speaker 1: so this year she had a score to settle and
- 9:36Speaker 1: she came back again, this time completing the course showing
- 9:39Speaker 1: real bravery, so massive, well done to you, Jenny. Now
- 9:43Speaker 1: I didn't get a chance to have a chat with
- 9:44Speaker 1: Jenny because she was totally wasted. Shots of bits. Whatever
- 9:49Speaker 1: you like to say, she'll agree with you. And she
- 9:52Speaker 1: took herself off for a little while and just kind
- 9:54Speaker 1: of chilled out, and I was a bit busy. We
- 9:56Speaker 1: missed each other, but I did have a catch up
- 9:58Speaker 1: with her during the week and as she's five. Now,
- 10:01Speaker 1: this event gets bigger and better every year. You don't
- 10:04Speaker 1: have to run it and many regulars come along and
- 10:06Speaker 1: support it every year. You can hire a table, your
- 10:09Speaker 1: reserve a table for ten for the whole afternoon, bring
- 10:12Speaker 1: a picnic, bring your own drinks, but of course there
- 10:15Speaker 1: are caterer's cocktail bars. You can buy a cold bier beer.
- 10:19Speaker 1: There's a massage table for the runners. Phil and Chantell
- 10:23Speaker 1: just thought about everything and the top of it all,
- 10:25Speaker 1: it was a lovely day. It wasn't as hot as
- 10:28Speaker 1: we are getting now in fact, and running from Hastings
- 10:31Speaker 1: to the deal direction there was a bit of a breeze,
- 10:34Speaker 1: but it was on their back, so it was not
- 10:37Speaker 1: too bad. Now, the people of Deal and surrounding areas,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I absolutely loved this event and the support is amazing.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I did my bit on the mic trying to keep
- 10:46Speaker 1: everybody informed as runners were coming in and thanking sponsors
- 10:50Speaker 1: for their support, and just trying to make the days
- 10:53Speaker 1: sort of flow a bit and keep everybody informed. Now,
- 10:56Speaker 1: I had a nice surprise when the group was setting
- 10:58Speaker 1: up that was late to the function. I saw Seasiders
- 11:01Speaker 1: radio football commentator Charlie Prescott. He was setting up his
- 11:05Speaker 1: keyboard and the first thing he said to me was Gregy.
- 11:08Speaker 1: I didn't expect it.
- 11:08Speaker 2: To be this big.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Anyway, it was another successful day. Chantelle stood by the
- 11:14Speaker 1: band stand afterwards and thanked everybody and she said, all
- 11:17Speaker 1: the previous years have been good, but this one was
- 11:20Speaker 1: the best. So please spare a thought for Phil as
- 11:23Speaker 1: he has to go back cycle all the way from
- 11:25Speaker 1: Deal to Hastings picking up the signs and already they're
- 11:28Speaker 1: preparing for next year. Okay, so we're moving on to
- 11:32Speaker 1: our next celebrity and music birthday. Now, this is a
- 11:36Speaker 1: gentleman that is a bit Marmite. You either love him
- 11:39Speaker 1: or you hate him. But he had a great, great
- 11:42Speaker 1: following with the ladies, that's for sure. And during the
- 11:46Speaker 1: week he turned eighty three, I think we're going to
- 11:50Speaker 1: play this one. Yeah, I got it right. This is
- 11:53Speaker 1: a weekend in New England and this is everygo Barry
- 11:58Speaker 1: madlho for a minute there. So Barry Manilo Marmite, you'll
- 12:03Speaker 1: either love him or you hate him.
- 12:05Speaker 2: He was eighty three last week. This night weave goodbye.
- 12:20Speaker 2: No it seems I'm bad again again. That goes right
- 12:43Speaker 2: back to nineteen seventy six Barry.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Manilo, who last week was eighty and he hasn't been
- 12:52Speaker 1: in the best of health lately. He's had to cancel
- 12:55Speaker 1: a couple of concerts. But let's face it, you get
- 12:57Speaker 1: to eighty, do you really want to go out and perform.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I think it's only the Rolling Stones that I want
- 13:02Speaker 1: to do that, and it's talking to Rolling Stones.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I was just I don't know.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I had a flash moment there where I played a
- 13:11Speaker 1: song for Phil King on Saturday Route sixty six and
- 13:15Speaker 1: that was one of the early Rolling Stone songs. And
- 13:18Speaker 1: the film came in and with MICHAELA and Will and
- 13:22Speaker 1: we talked about their day at the London Marathon and
- 13:25Speaker 1: what a great Saturday morning that was.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I really loved it, you know.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And there are loads and loads of sporty podcasts on
- 13:34Speaker 1: Radio Folkston website and also on my Facebook page. But
- 13:39Speaker 1: if you go to Radio Folkston dot com and follow
- 13:43Speaker 1: the links to but it's got a sports show and
- 13:47Speaker 1: podcasts and.
- 13:48Speaker 2: There's a couple of hundred of them on there.
- 13:50Speaker 1: They're not all interviews, to be fair, and some of
- 13:52Speaker 1: them are just reports on various things. But you can
- 13:56Speaker 1: look back and you can have a listener and you
- 13:58Speaker 1: can share the podcast. And that's the great idea about podcasts.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Not everyone can listen live at this time of day,
- 14:04Speaker 1: and we do understand that. I mean some people, you know,
- 14:07Speaker 1: this is kind of a lunchtime. They might listen to
- 14:09Speaker 1: twenty minutes in the lunch break. But you can listen
- 14:13Speaker 1: to the whole show back on the radio of Radio
- 14:17Speaker 1: Focused on the website and just follow the links and
- 14:19Speaker 1: you can go to all the podcasts. Now, if you've
- 14:24Speaker 1: got a Spailty story to tell me, I'd love to
- 14:28Speaker 1: hear it, and it is the opportunity to come in
- 14:30Speaker 1: and have a chat with me.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And it is so casual.
- 14:33Speaker 1: People that have been in before a little bit tense,
- 14:35Speaker 1: a little bit nervous, but once we get going, we
- 14:38Speaker 1: have a chat and they relax. We ask them for
- 14:41Speaker 1: if they want to play their favorite song, that sort
- 14:43Speaker 1: of thing, and then invariably can't shut them up. It's
- 14:47Speaker 1: such a good thing to do. And you can see
- 14:50Speaker 1: behind the scenes of your local community radio how it works,
- 14:53Speaker 1: how the system works, how the tracks come out, and yeah,
- 14:57Speaker 1: it's really an education and you'd have a lovely morning
- 15:00Speaker 1: or even a Thursday at lunchtime. So if you've got
- 15:03Speaker 1: sporty stories, perhaps you're doing an event that wants a
- 15:06Speaker 1: bit of a recognition, then just get in touch with me.
- 15:09Speaker 1: You can email us at Sports Desk at Radio Folkston
- 15:13Speaker 1: dot com or just send me a message on my
- 15:16Speaker 1: Facebook page. Okay, we're staying with the birthday theme now. Now,
- 15:20Speaker 1: this is a gentleman that probably is only remembered in
- 15:25Speaker 1: recent times for a song at Christmas because he says
- 15:29Speaker 1: in his typical brummy voice, this song is more pinching. Well,
- 15:34Speaker 1: there is another side to a nerdy holder, you know.
- 15:37Speaker 1: And I love this track. I've dug this one out now.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Nordi Holder was eighty years old last week and he's
- 15:46Speaker 1: always remembered for big, loud, shouty, powerful songs.
- 15:51Speaker 2: But I want you to hear the other side of him.
- 15:53Speaker 1: This is a lovely song from nineteen seventy four, and
- 15:55Speaker 1: this is Nordy Hold of Slade and a song called
- 15:58Speaker 1: every Day.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Every Day when I'm away, I'm think of you. Everyone
- 16:18Speaker 2: can carry on except.
- 16:30Speaker 1: So that's the other side of a naughty Holder. You
- 16:33Speaker 1: normally expect to see him in big platform boots and
- 16:38Speaker 1: we've Slade really rocking behind him. But he has got
- 16:41Speaker 1: a soft side.
- 16:41Speaker 2: And I'll tell you what. I love that song. I
- 16:43Speaker 2: really do. Okay, so well, I'll tell you what.
- 16:47Speaker 1: We keep with the birthday theme because we've got one
- 16:50Speaker 1: more birthday to celebrate.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Now.
- 16:51Speaker 1: This is a gentleman that needs no introduction whatsoever. I mean,
- 16:56Speaker 1: he's written so many classic songs and during the week
- 17:00Speaker 1: he was eighty four. Now he's a member of the Beatles.
- 17:03Speaker 1: There's I mean, he went on to write songs with
- 17:06Speaker 1: wings Beatles still standard test the time. And I've been
- 17:10Speaker 1: up to Liverpool and I've been to the Cavern and
- 17:16Speaker 1: I absolutely loved it. I mean geographically that it's not
- 17:20Speaker 1: the same cabin. It's in the same sort of location,
- 17:22Speaker 1: but there was a bit of structural work done, so
- 17:24Speaker 1: it's slightly moved, but it's still the cavern. I mean,
- 17:28Speaker 1: even Silla Black, she was a checkout girl. She used
- 17:32Speaker 1: to take the hats and coats at the cavern. And
- 17:36Speaker 1: it's just jam packed with nostalgia, not about the Beatles
- 17:40Speaker 1: either And in the afternoons they have a free afternoon
- 17:44Speaker 1: where there are and this shows you how long that
- 17:49Speaker 1: the music has lasted and stood the test of time.
- 17:52Speaker 1: They have kind of budding artists that are singing in
- 17:56Speaker 1: the songs of the sixties and they are really really good,
- 17:59Speaker 1: you know, And I just kind of felt it was
- 18:03Speaker 1: an honor to be there, all the old posters of
- 18:06Speaker 1: Billy J. Cramer and the Dakotas and Jerry and the Pacemakers,
- 18:10Speaker 1: all the Liverpool sound which really took off in the sixties.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Paul McCartney last week it was eighty four and once
- 18:19Speaker 1: he's gone on to make like literally hundreds of great
- 18:23Speaker 1: records when he was with the Beatles, and once again
- 18:25Speaker 1: they were up front and rocking and rolling, and all
- 18:28Speaker 1: of a sudden, the Beatles churned this one out and
- 18:31Speaker 1: for me, this would be the most classic song that
- 18:33Speaker 1: Paul McCartney has ever saw. Yes, there go Paul McCartney
- 18:50Speaker 1: and the Beatles and well looking say that was nineteen
- 18:54Speaker 1: sixty five. So okay, So we wished the following people
- 18:58Speaker 1: were happy birthday. Allisonmoya was sixty five, Boy George from
- 19:02Speaker 1: Culture Club was sixty five, Barry Manilow was eighty, Nordy
- 19:06Speaker 1: Holder was eighty, and Paul McCartney was eighty four. And
- 19:10Speaker 1: there was all last week. And I want to tell
- 19:13Speaker 1: you about someone else that's having a birthday.
- 19:15Speaker 2: On the twenty ninth.
- 19:17Speaker 1: June, I will be having a birthday and I will
- 19:20Speaker 1: be seventy five. Now I'm not going to make any excuses.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I'm going to put my hand up and own up
- 19:27Speaker 1: to my age. And I just want to read out
- 19:29Speaker 1: something that I have posted on Facebook and that is
- 19:32Speaker 1: getting a great response.
- 19:34Speaker 2: So listen to this.
- 19:36Speaker 1: On Monday, the twenty ninth of June, I will be
- 19:38Speaker 1: reaching a milestone in my life, my seventy fifth birthday.
- 19:42Speaker 2: So I thought, what can I do? How about raising
- 19:45Speaker 2: money for prostate cancer? Now?
- 19:47Speaker 1: I thought I've done my bit for Cancer Research UK
- 19:50Speaker 1: and breast cancer. Now and so I decided to promote
- 19:54Speaker 1: prostate cancer. Now I'm not climbing Everest, running an ultramarathon,
- 19:59Speaker 1: jumping out of a place, or anything like that. I'm
- 20:01Speaker 1: just having a milestone birthday. Then I thought, do you
- 20:04Speaker 1: know what. Over the last twenty five years, I've promoted
- 20:07Speaker 1: Race for Life on stage, I've promoted loads of charities
- 20:11Speaker 1: and interviewed hundreds of fundraising gifts on this very radio
- 20:15Speaker 1: focused in sports show. I've been a quiz master an
- 20:19Speaker 1: endless amount of quizzes for charity, all for other people.
- 20:22Speaker 1: So I thought it's my turn to do some fundraising
- 20:24Speaker 1: for a good cause. I've also compared hundreds of road
- 20:28Speaker 1: races for running clubs promoting their causes. If you've ever
- 20:32Speaker 1: been to one of those and one of those people
- 20:34Speaker 1: that I've helped or called in at a race, then
- 20:36Speaker 1: all I'm asking for is a small donation as a
- 20:39Speaker 1: birthday present, and it will go straight to the prostate
- 20:42Speaker 1: cancer charity. One in eight men will get prostate cancer,
- 20:46Speaker 1: and all too often men find out by complete chance
- 20:50Speaker 1: too late. So denote today to help funder research that
- 20:54Speaker 1: will improve the odds of catching prostate cancer earlier. Because
- 20:57Speaker 1: men's lives shouldn't be left to chance. So I mean,
- 21:01Speaker 1: this is what I posted on Facebook, and it just
- 21:04Speaker 1: says thanks for reading this together. Lots of small donations
- 21:08Speaker 1: can make one big donation. Kevin Daly, that's me. Yes,
- 21:12Speaker 1: I'll be seventy five on Monday. Now I might just
- 21:16Speaker 1: add that I haven't got prostate cancer myself. People have
- 21:20Speaker 1: been asking that, but no, but I have lost a
- 21:22Speaker 1: couple of friends who did have this terrible illness. So yeah,
- 21:26Speaker 1: I just thought, oh, I've seen it before. So I
- 21:29Speaker 1: decided to start this just giving page and set myself
- 21:32Speaker 1: a target of five hundred pounds, and so far I've
- 21:35Speaker 1: received nearly four hundred pounds. Now, the point that I
- 21:38Speaker 1: made is that lots of little donations make one big donation,
- 21:42Speaker 1: and I want to thank all those have donated so far.
- 21:45Speaker 1: But I too, I do want to tell you about
- 21:47Speaker 1: one donation that appeared on my page for a one
- 21:50Speaker 1: hundred pound I looked at the name Gary Parker. I thought,
- 21:56Speaker 1: I don't know anybody called Gary Parker, so I tracked
- 21:58Speaker 1: him down a complete stranger on Facebook, and sent him
- 22:02Speaker 1: a massive thank you. Now, Gary told me he was
- 22:05Speaker 1: a keen cyclist and himself and some of his Fellow'spurse
- 22:08Speaker 1: supporters have raised over three hundred and thirty thousand pound
- 22:13Speaker 1: for Pancreatic Cancy UK on a ride that they make
- 22:16Speaker 1: every year called the Grand Depart Amsterdam. Now looking at
- 22:20Speaker 1: Gary's Facebook page, is also taking part in various fundraising events,
- 22:24Speaker 1: including a twenty kilometer walk.
- 22:27Speaker 2: So I just want to share this story.
- 22:29Speaker 1: And if you remember, I read out a story for
- 22:32Speaker 1: Gemma Jemmy Niles who was raising charity at Money for
- 22:36Speaker 1: Charity for her daughter and she found it very humbling
- 22:40Speaker 1: to find that total strangers were donating to her her
- 22:43Speaker 1: charity as well. So it does you know, it makes
- 22:47Speaker 1: you feel that there are some lovely, lovely people out there.
- 22:52Speaker 1: It's just a great thing that these people do, just
- 22:55Speaker 1: off their own back, complete strangers.
- 22:58Speaker 2: It's brilliant. I'm lost for the words. Anyway, there you go.
- 23:01Speaker 1: If you want to click on my Facebook page and
- 23:03Speaker 1: track the links down, you see a picture of me
- 23:05Speaker 1: and my just Giving page, and that will wish me a.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Very very happy birthday. Thank you very much.
- 23:11Speaker 1: But this is one of my favorite I'll think if
- 23:14Speaker 1: I had to choose a song for my birthday, I
- 23:17Speaker 1: do love the Eagles and It's a tough call, but
- 23:20Speaker 1: I've chosen this one.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Here we go. Take it easy, dig you.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Easy, don't look the sound your Onscrib.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Eagles nineteen seventy two.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Right, I want to tell you about another sporting event
- 23:45Speaker 1: that's come my way and now listen to this. Are
- 23:49Speaker 1: you looking for a fun challenge this summer while supporting
- 23:52Speaker 1: two fantastic local charities, Join us for Beat the Bell
- 23:56Speaker 1: on Sunday, the sixteenth of August at the Anchor in
- 23:59Speaker 1: in Winger. Beat the Bell is a unique self guided
- 24:02Speaker 1: charity run or walk for people of all abilities. You
- 24:06Speaker 1: can choose from ten circular routes, all starting and finishing
- 24:10Speaker 1: at the anchor and complete as many or as few
- 24:13Speaker 1: as you like. Take part on your own or with
- 24:15Speaker 1: a team or with some friends. The event starts at
- 24:18Speaker 1: eleven and finishes at nine o'clock when the last bell rings.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Now the entry is twenty pound, all profits going to
- 24:26Speaker 1: Young Lives Foundation and Saint John's Ambulance, who will both
- 24:30Speaker 1: be there on the day now. Young Lives Foundation supports
- 24:33Speaker 1: children and young people across Kent, helping them overcome challenges,
- 24:37Speaker 1: build confidence and reach their full potential, and Saint John's
- 24:40Speaker 1: Ambulance where we all know who they are, but it
- 24:43Speaker 1: is a well known volunteer based organization that could always
- 24:47Speaker 1: do with a bit of extra fundraising. I mean whilst
- 24:49Speaker 1: they might be volunteers, I mean they've still got to
- 24:51Speaker 1: buy the kit and stuff like that. So yeah, raising
- 24:55Speaker 1: funds for the Sir John's Ambulance is a great cause.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Now this is a very very different sort of run.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I think it's unique actually. Now a gentleman called the
- 25:04Speaker 1: Rob Small got in touch me and asked if I
- 25:06Speaker 1: could just mention it on the radio and now I'll
- 25:10Speaker 1: get into it. He's done so much work, you know.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Now if you visit on the website Beatthebell dot UK right,
- 25:19Speaker 1: what you'll find is ten videos. Now the keyword in
- 25:23Speaker 1: their little right up there is self guided. So there's
- 25:26Speaker 1: not going to be any marshals out on the course.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And what you would do if you So you decide
- 25:32Speaker 1: to run five miles, So go to beat the Beell
- 25:36Speaker 1: you dot UK and you will see there's a map,
- 25:40Speaker 1: a physical map you can look at like any other
- 25:43Speaker 1: Ordnance Survey type map, but then you can click on
- 25:45Speaker 1: the video. Now Rob has run that five mile course
- 25:49Speaker 1: and he's videoed every sort of left turn, right turn,
- 25:53Speaker 1: and just to make sure that you don't get lost.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And he's done that from all the all the ranges
- 25:59Speaker 1: of one mile to ten miles, so the amount of
- 26:01Speaker 1: work has gone into that. And if you're doing a
- 26:04Speaker 1: one mile course, you might do one and think oh
- 26:07Speaker 1: that was good, Perhaps do another two miles. Then you
- 26:10Speaker 1: can click on the two mile and do another two
- 26:12Speaker 1: miles and so on and you can run as many
- 26:14Speaker 1: as you like. But the old principle is totally different.
- 26:17Speaker 1: And I've got to applaud in well done, Rob, And
- 26:20Speaker 1: as you say, there's two good charities there, the Young
- 26:22Speaker 1: Lives Foundations and the John's Ambulance. And so keeping in
- 26:27Speaker 1: touch with Rob and he's letting me know how the
- 26:31Speaker 1: entries are going, and I just want to keep you
- 26:33Speaker 1: up to date.
- 26:34Speaker 2: But Rob, well done to you.
- 26:36Speaker 1: That has a great idea and unique, I would say,
- 26:39Speaker 1: and it will be a little bit of a challenge
- 26:41Speaker 1: for the runner. So if you really fancy doing something
- 26:44Speaker 1: totally different, basically it's running with your phone and following
- 26:48Speaker 1: the course that Rob has run and you're not getting lost.
- 26:52Speaker 1: So that's on Sunday, the August the sixteenth, So visit
- 26:55Speaker 1: their website Beatthebell dot uk. Right bit of music. Now,
- 27:01Speaker 1: now this one takes me back nineteen ninety seven. Now,
- 27:04Speaker 1: I started working down at Eurotunnel with an agency in
- 27:07Speaker 1: nineteen ninety seven, and so this song was actually really
- 27:12Speaker 1: prominent in those days. And it's like a song that
- 27:15Speaker 1: can take you back to your holiday, to your first love,
- 27:19Speaker 1: to a funeral perhaps, But this one will take me
- 27:22Speaker 1: straight back to those early days on Eurotunnel. And it
- 27:26Speaker 1: is brim full of asher and corner Shop theyah we
- 27:44Speaker 1: go in nineteen ninety seven, the corner shop and brim
- 27:47Speaker 1: full of asher.
- 27:49Speaker 2: And as I said, the records do take.
- 27:50Speaker 1: You back to your childhood, your first girlfriend, your first nightclub,
- 27:56Speaker 1: certainly holidays and I don't know periods of university and
- 28:02Speaker 1: that one takes me back so the first time I
- 28:05Speaker 1: worked at Eurotunne or that one seemed to be pumping
- 28:07Speaker 1: out all the time for some reason. So I had
- 28:09Speaker 1: a good time. I met up with a load of
- 28:11Speaker 1: old my old buddies Ramsgate. If you've ever been over
- 28:15Speaker 1: to a certain establishment that has got the word spoons
- 28:19Speaker 1: in it, then that's where we met and up on
- 28:21Speaker 1: the rooftop and it's great to get together, you know,
- 28:25Speaker 1: and we've all packed up work now and they all
- 28:28Speaker 1: got plenty to talk about, all got time on our hands,
- 28:30Speaker 1: and yeah, it's great to keep in touch with all
- 28:33Speaker 1: the guys from a eurotunnel there, right, So the last
- 28:36Speaker 1: song of the day. We are running out of time.
- 28:39Speaker 1: I've been waffling quite a bit today because we just
- 28:41Speaker 1: couldn't be asked to do much sport. There we go,
- 28:44Speaker 1: We owned up to it. So we're going to play
- 28:46Speaker 1: out with this one. We won't get it all in,
- 28:48Speaker 1: but I'll be back on Saturday. So this is the
- 28:52Speaker 1: verve and bittersweet symphony.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Well that's it from me for today.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I'll be back on Saturday between ten and eleven, when
- 29:19Speaker 1: my special guest will be Beth Keeling, who recently took
- 29:22Speaker 1: part in a strong woman competition.
- 29:25Speaker 2: So that's going to be an interesting morning.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Friday evening Tomorrow, I'm off to watch Kent Spitfire's play
- 29:31Speaker 1: Nuts Outlawers in the two twenty match at the Saint
- 29:34Speaker 1: Lawrence Grown that I'll be back on Saturday and see
- 29:37Speaker 1: you then five point nine online at Radio Folkston dot
- 29:43Speaker 1: com and on your smart speaker
