Transcript
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Welcome to week three of the 2021 Section 4 football spring season.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Our guest football analyst is Nate Lall, the WCDO Sports Director in Sydney.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Welcome, Nate.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Hey, thanks so much for having me.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: This is a great opportunity.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: I appreciate it.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we appreciate it too.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: You sharing your knowledge with us.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Today, during the first quarter of the Cover Four podcast, Nate and I will discuss upcoming matchups.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Then we'll jump right into the second quarter.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: And during that second quarter, Nate will be reviewing the 11-player and eight-player teams in the eastern portion of Section Four.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: And what would those teams be that you cover in the eastern portion, Nate?
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Well, we uh we heavily focus on the teams that are in the MAC for all the other sports here, the Mid-State Athletic Conference.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: So those teams would include Sydney, Unitego, Bainbridge, Guilford, uh Deposit Hancock, Harpersville, Afton, Green, Oxford, Unadilla Valley, Walton, and Delhi.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: And then besides that, just geographically, uh, we like to cover Oneanta, Norwich, Windsor, and Whitney Point, since they end up playing a lot of the same teams.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: And Oneanta and Norwich are pretty much right here in our backyard, too.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: So those are the teams that we cover on a week-to-week basis.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Before we get right into the podcast, I want to start off by uh acknowledging Susquehanna Valley.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: They extended their consecutive win streak to 28 with their win last week.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: So that takes them out of the tie with Cortland and puts them one behind the 1951 Johnson City Wildcats who are at 29.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of interesting.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: It's nice to watch those streaks.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: I know when uh Maine Anwell was going through their run of uh 62 win streak, Roger and I got the opportunity to cover a great deal of those games each season as they were progressing through.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: And it was it was kind of neat.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: You know, we almost felt a little bit of the pressure as they were uh going through that streak as well.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: And they had some close calls here and there, but they right now sit atop of the uh the consecutive wins record book uh with 62, and that streak ended in 2015.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: So we'll jump right in now to week three, which will be played April 2nd and 3rd.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: But I will preface that with uh Nate, you actually have a game this evening that you're gonna broadcast.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Yes, I guess in today's world of uh, you know, we're we're throwing this season together in the spring.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, there are some wacky dates for football games, and that includes a Tuesday night game between Oneanta and Bainbridge Guildford.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: That game will be in Bainbridge, and we've been joking at the station that we think this will be the first time we've ever done a Tuesday night football game.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Uh so we're looking forward to that.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: It'll be our first chance at seeing these two teams, and it'll be the first time Bainbridge Guildford has had a chance to play this year.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: Unfortunately, their week one game had to be postponed.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: So we are looking forward to that here tonight.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Who's gonna be on the mic with you?
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Well, actually, my normal color guy, uh Tim Cutting, was not able to be there tonight.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna grab one of the United go eight-man assistant coaches.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, his name is Nate Wilsie, played a couple years up at Brockport, and uh, I always like having somebody that knows the X's and O's real well on the broadcast with me.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: So it'll actually be Nate's first appearance on WCDO.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: So we're excited to have him.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: And I think after this season is done and we get maybe two or three seasons or more down the road, this season's gonna be referenced back to just for what you were talking about.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, do you remember when we did that Tuesday night game and you know the 2021 season or or this crazy schedule we had, or we only had six games.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: So I think not only is this season going to have a major asterisk on it, but there's also gonna be a lot of things referenced back to it that uh for for some instances is gonna be kind of neat, and other instances maybe it's kind of a drag.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: But nonetheless, the bottom line is the student athletes get to play football and the coaches get to coach and the fans get to cheers, and that's the main thing.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Well, it's it's it's interesting this week because we have a Tuesday night game, and then we're gonna do Sydney and Walton on Thursday, so two uh middle of the week games.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: So you're right, that's definitely interesting.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: All right, the first game up is Binghamton at Vestal, and uh Binghamton is uh kind of struggling a little bit right now, and uh we expect some good things out of them.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Vestal, on the other hand, had a uh pretty good game they played against their arch rival, Union Endicott, last week, and they came out with a win there.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: So that should be a really good game.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: The next game up, this is the game that uh everybody's talking about.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: And even before the uh season got going, when they saw this on the schedule, people knew that this had the potential to be a really uh high profile game.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: And that's Shenango Forks, who is two and zero right now at Susquehanna Valley, which is also two and zero.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: So something's got to give at that particular game.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: But these are the kind of games that you really uh like as a fan, as a coach, as a player, these are the really kind of the neat games to to really uh get a chance to watch and and maybe be part of if you're lucky enough to be part of the Shenango Forks or Susquehanna Valley program.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: So that's uh that being said, they got Whitney Point, they're gonna be at Susquehanna Valley.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Uh that's gonna be, I think, a relatively close game.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Nick Sereni's really got the uh the Shenango Valley team playing excellent football.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Then we'll jump in.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: The next game is Maine Enwell at Johnson City.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Maine Enwell has traditionally been a powerhouse for the last few years, and Johnson City, I think, is is really starting to turn a corner.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Last week, Coach Place had uh their first victory at Johnson City, so that was good.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Then you've got uh young coach at Union Endicott, Tom Bellino going against uh Tim Hogan at Windsor.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: That that should be also a pretty good game.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Union Endicott has lost a couple of tough games late uh in the game.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: So I look for good things out of them.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: Now this is into your neck of the woods.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: We've got Delhi at Oneana.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Is there anything you want to add about that one?
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Well, I think uh if you were to ask me who maybe a favorite would be in my neck of the woods up here, I have not seen them in person yet, but I think Delhi uh is a very, very good team, and they are just absolutely loaded with athletes all over the field.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, no matter what sports these guys are playing, whether it's basketball or baseball or tennis, even, uh, they just have guys all over the field that can make plays.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Uh you look at a a player like Alex Hayes, who I'd say is their best wide receiver, uh, he's gonna go on to the Deerfield Academy next year out in New England.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, they just have weapons all over.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: And uh they didn't get a chance to play.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Last week their game was postponed, but I'll be interested to see how it goes against Oneanta.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, just a fast, tough team.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: And if you were to ask me who I think for some of the top teams out in in this area, I would put Del High near the top of the list right now.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Question for you, Coach Newman.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Is he an X player?
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: I I'm not a hundred percent sure.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: I I've known Coach Newman more from the baseball side.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: He's been uh coaching baseball there and turned that program around.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: And he kind of stepped into football on a pinch, and we haven't talked that much about his football background, but boy, he's surrounded himself with a great staff, and they've just done a really nice job.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: I think last year they really surprised a lot of people uh with the way that they played after struggling for a couple of years.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: And that's exactly what you do as a leader, in this case, the head coach.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: You surround yourself with, you know, good talent that uh is knowledgeable and also has the ability to communicate well and listen well to the players and their student athletes.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: And that goes a long way.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: The reason I ask about Newman is back when I had I actually had the opportunity to coach the defensive backs in the Ernie Davis game.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: I think it was 2005 or 2006, and there was an individual I'm pretty sure he was from Delheid.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: His name was Newman, and uh he was one of the defensive backs, but it it just may not may not be, but that would be I'd be curious to know on that one.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Next game up deposit Hancock at Harpersville Afton.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Well, I got a little news tip for you in that this this game as of today has been postponed, unfortunately.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, this game, uh, another victim, unfortunately, of uh of the health issues that are going on and the covet issues.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: So, what I have heard in in my neck of the woods is that this game has been quarantined or that that uh DH has been quarantined and uh they're gonna try to you know fix the schedule and see what they can do down the road.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Uh I hate to hear that.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: But you know, unfortunately, that is as life right now, and hopefully everybody comes out of that healthy.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: That's the main thing.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Come out of that healthy and get a chance to compete uh the rest of the you know the next three weeks.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: I will say that I had a chance to see Harper's Hill aften uh this past week when they played Sydney, and I was very, very impressed.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: A lot of speed, and uh, you know, with the new coaching staff there, I didn't know what to expect, but it's obvious that they were really uh ready to play Sydney, very prepared, came out with a lot of great plays in the running game and did a very nice job.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: So whenever they get back on the field, I'm excited to see what they'll bring to the table.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, next one up is Walton, who is one and one going at into Sydney against uh Matthews' team.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: They're zero and two, but I would not really base my indication of this game on those records.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: These are two really good programs led by two really good coaches, and I expect uh this to be a good game.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: What do you know about it?
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: I think it will be a very good game.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: It's a game we're gonna do on the radio here on Thursday night.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think Walton uh having a very good lead year last year, of course, getting to the Section 4 Class D final before losing to Tyoga, they're bringing everybody back on that line.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: So they're gonna open up a lot of holes and do a very nice job.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: I think what Walton has kind of found so far is they have some new players and some young players in some key positions, uh especially at the quarterback.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: When you try to replace a guy like Dylan Jacob, who was their quarterback last year, who graduated and he's now playing basketball at Elmira College, uh, he was your general on the field for four years.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: And Coach Hoover said it was like having an extra coach on the field.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: So I think that's what Walton is going through right now, just some growing pains in terms of having some new guys run the offense.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: But like you said, they'll figure it out.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: And I think Sydney as well, uh trying to replace a guy like Aaliam Matthews, who's now at Cornell, some new faces and some new positions, and they're starting to figure it out.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: It just takes a little bit of time, and they've all kind of gotten thrown into this.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: So I expect this to be a very close game, uh, a really good chess match between the two coaches.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: And uh you never know.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: I I think there's great athletes on both sides, and I think we could see another high-scoring game.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: So I'm interested to see what happens on Thursday night.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, on the Walton side, there's a uh a long pedigree of um the Hoover family there coaching.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Uh Adam's dad, Jim, and then his uh grandfather was the longtime successful coach at Vestal and Matthews being a former player, and uh he's had really put his mark on the Sydney program there.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: So I agree.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: I hope that's going to be a good game.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Next one up is Norwich with Coach Christie at Bainbridge Guilford.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: I I'm not sure on this one.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Uh Norwich had a tough game last week against Susquehanna Valley, and uh I don't really know what to expect in this particular game.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: What do you see?
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: I do know that Norwich had a key injury in the first quarter of that game against Sus Valley.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: And the vibe I got from talking to them was that that injury kind of put them in a tough position.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: And when you're playing such a good team like Sus Valley, uh it doesn't always go well when you lose one of your key guys.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: So uh I think if everybody is healthy, I would probably give a slight edge to Norwich in this game.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: That being said, I haven't seen BG tonight.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: I know Coach Larmer always does a good job, and the Bobcats have really done a lot of work in the offseason uh to try to be prepared.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited to see BG tonight, and then I would probably have a little better idea.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, but you know, going into that one, if I had to decide right now, I'd I would give an edge to Norwich if they're healthy, but interesting an interesting matchup that we wouldn't normally see uh, you know, based on the size of the school.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: So that'll be a fun one.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Now, the player that was hurt, that was the Norwich quarterback, correct?
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Correct, yes.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know when and talking to Coach Christie, he mentioned that, you know, we obviously know that that's a key position on a football team, but he really made uh made the comment that you know the the way that Norwich goes really goes through that position.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: And uh it's unfortunate, you know, you have those injuries that they are obviously part of the game, but uh hopefully that student athlete will bounce back and and be healthy, maybe come back this year.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't know what the injury was, but uh that's too bad.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Uh hard to hear that.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Now, the next game up is uh pretty interesting.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: It's Newark Valley at Waverly.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: Now, Newark Valley came out of the shoot.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, really uh played very well.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: And then last week they took it on the chin, but they were playing against Corning.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Okay, so that's not an easy jump for them to do that.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: So I think that Waverly really needs to be prepared because I think Newark Valley is going to come out with guns ablazing because in the first week of the season, um they beat Sydney 52 to 28.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: And um they they've got a lot of horsepower up there.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: I know Coach Hartenstein does a great job up there with them, and the same thing with Jason Miller down at Waverly.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: But uh I think this, I give the nod to Newark Valley in this particular game.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: It just there's just so much firepower they have, and Waverly's struggled a little bit on defense.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: So that I think that the edge goes to Newark Valley there.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Next up will be what I call a backyard brawl.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: It's Tyoga with Coach Ilo at uh we go with Coach Vergler.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: That's just one of those situations where probably most, if not all, the student athletes that are competing each other probably know each other, maybe some better than others.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Maybe you grew up playing travel ball, AAU basketball, whatever.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: That's one of those backyard brawls.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: It's really hard to tell what's going to happen in that particular game.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: But I think it's, you know, they're playing it at Oigo and they have the uh the new turf there.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: So both teams actually have pretty good, what I call ball handling position players.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: So expect to either be relatively close, depending on what the defenses will do, or maybe it's uh uh, you know, uh more of a high scoring affair.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: But anyways, I think that'll be an interesting game.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Then you've got Almira traveling to Corning.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: This is uh also one of those games that people looked at early on when they looked at the schedule.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: And uh, because Almira, the Almira Express always has uh a very good team there.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: They run that double wing, and it's very difficult to defense that.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And then Corning, of course, is just got so much uh firepower in a lot of their ball handling positions, and they always have the great line play.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: And matter of fact, when I watch them play, their I don't know if you've seen them or not, their uniforms look just like the United States Military Academy at West Point, the Army team, they look just like uh those uh uniforms.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of cool, but that should be a really good game up there in Corning.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Now, the next game, Horseheads at Syracuse Henninger.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: That just got on the schedule here not too long ago because horse heads actually had an open uh opening or a bye.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: So it's good that they actually get a chance to do that because if they didn't, this this would have been the first of two consecutive buys for them.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: And that doesn't bode good for anybody to you know get all ramped up in the offseason and play a game or two and then sit out two games.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's glad to see that they actually get a chance to play Syracuse Henninger, who's up in division three in Syracuse, and they're always a tough team, always have good foot speed on the team, a lot of good athletes.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: So that should be a real interesting game up there.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be Saturday at one o'clock.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Next up is uh Ithaca High School at Dryden.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Now, Ithaca is what I call the frequent flyer miles uh winner this year.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: They have their field is not playable, they're getting new turf installed, so all their games are away.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: So they're at going to be at Dryden, which is not too far away.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: So there may be a little bit of uh little bit of rivalry there, but that's not a common game either.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of good to see these.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: It's almost like March Madness with football, where you get teams playing other teams that don't normally play.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of interesting to see how they they match up and what the results are.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: And then the final uh 11, 11 player game would be Watkins Glenodessabon Tour at Groton.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: And uh that one I'm really not sure.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: These teams I know have played in the past a little bit, but uh I think uh is Groton one of your teams, did you say?
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: No, they're a little bit out of my area.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: Uh we do see them time from time to time, but it's mostly in the playoffs.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: So unfortunately for this one, I don't have a lot of background on how they're doing this year.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: But when you say you see them mostly in the playoffs, that that makes me think that they probably have a pretty good program if they're usually in the playoffs.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: So that that could be a good game.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: I know Watkins Glenodusa Monteur, we covered their playoff game last year against Susquehanna Valley.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: And although they got beat pretty handedly.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Watkins Odessa Montour had some really good student athletes in the backfield.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: The the coach's son was a quarterback, and then they had a couple, I think it was a slot and a running back that were very good, and they were young, so they should be good uh not only this year, but hopefully when we get around to the fall season as well.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Now that takes us to the eight-player schedule.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: We've got Oxford at Unadilla Valley.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Can you tell us anything about that?
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, I had a good chance to see Unadilla Valley this past weekend against Unitego.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Unfortunately for UV, the injury bug did strike, and I would say one of their best players, if not their best player, uh Kyler Butts got injured in the first game of the season against Green, and uh he has a broken tibia.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Now, to show you what kind of a player he is, he'll be going to play at St.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: John Fisher next year.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Uh so to have that type of an athlete on the field, especially at the eight-man level, uh, was very, very helpful for Coach Regis there at UV.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: So he's out.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: A lot of it now will will uh fall on the quarterback shoulder and shoulders in Blaine Reifenberg, very good athlete.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: And there's a good quarter receivers there.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: So I would give a slight edge to UV here.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Oxford has only played one game uh so far, and they didn't put any points up on the board, but I know they're a group that has a good line that has come back again.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: I think it's again a situation where they're trying to fill in those gaps around uh the line and see what they can do.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: I would I would maybe give a slight edge to UV here.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Next one up, we've got Green at Unitego Franklin.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: I think this will be a very good game.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, a team, uh a game I should say, that has great players on both sides.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: When I look at Unitego, they have a running back in Leo Temple, uh who is actually a Franklin kid and comes over to play.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, we were joking last week on the broadcast that if we did a Section 4 fantasy draft, he might be one of the first running backs off the board.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: Just a powerful, powerful runner.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: He's had over 200 yards rushing and a couple of TDs in the first two games of the season, and he's got some breakaway speed.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: And Unitego also has a sophomore quarterback in Logan Utter, who I've been very impressed with.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: And talking to Coach McCrony there at Unitego, he said uh, you know, Logan is like a sponge for us.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: We tell him to do something he wants to learn, and uh, they've been very impressed with him.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: Now, Green again transitioning to the eight-man game.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: These are two teams that are transitioning to the eight-man game.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Uh Coach Gorton there is always well prepared.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: And with an athlete like Tristan Austin, uh, he's another guy that if he can shed a couple tackles, he's gonna be gone.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: So I could see this being a high-scoring game uh because there's some breakaway speed on both sides.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: And in the eight-man game, with all that space, if you can turn the corner and get that corner, uh, you might be in for six.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: So I think that would be uh another great game on Thursday to watch if you're a fan up in my area.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: I I want to really get out when I can and see one of these eight uh player games.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: I just think that it was would be so cool to watch and see how these student athletes react in space and uh you know the techniques they have to.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: I've spoken about this last week in our broadcast.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: The techniques, blocking and tackling, has to be much more precise because you don't usually have that student athlete behind you or maybe beside you that can fill in and and make that tackle if you miss it, because usually there's a lot of open space.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Just uh it's a very exciting game.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: Next one up, you got Thomas A.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Edison going to Lansing.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: And now Thomas Edison really had a tough week last week.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: They got beat by Notre Dame 49 to nothing, but they also um they they have um a very dynamic team.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: It's just that they ran into a buzzsaw at Notre Dame.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: I think Notre Dame was still reeling to their for their opening season loss to Moravia, where they were shut out.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: So they turned around and did the same thing to Thomas Edison.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: So we'll see how that goes up in Lansing.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Now then the other one is Notre Dame travels to Trumansburg.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Do you know anything about that matchup?
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: I don't.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Again, two teams that are just a little bit out of my area.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, the four eight man teams that I'm primarily uh Uh covering our green, Oxford, UV, and Unitego.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: So unfortunately, I don't know a lot about that one.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Well, I know uh Coach Struble's got a lot of firepower with his offensive team there.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Last week I alluded to they scored 49 against Thomas Edison.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: And I was able to see a little bit of that on um the YouTube.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: It wasn't really clear, but you could still see what was transpiring.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: And they've got some good student athletes in all positions, you know, the ball handling positions and the non-ball handling positions.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: So look for good things out of them.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: And then if you're playing at Trumansburg, you know, you never know what might happen up there.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Next game up is one that uh really comes to the forefront is Candor, Spencer Venetton at Newfield.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: Now, the very first weekend, Newfield put up 74 points.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: And that's that's not easy to do.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I don't care what level of football you're playing, 74 is a lot.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: And I didn't see the game or get a chance to get any statistics on it.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: But when you have 74 points, chances are you're probably not only scoring on offense, you're probably scoring on defense in the in the kicking game as well.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: And Candor Spencer Venettin, uh, their very first uh game, they were at home and they beat Unitigo Franklin 50 to 22.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: So they're somebody that can really put up points.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be hard to tell how this game is gonna go out.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: There's gonna be a lot of pressure on both defenses because both teams are so offensive oriented.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: But that that's one of the games I think will be a real uh key game to watch if you you can, or uh listen to it maybe on the radio or through the Huddle application.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: Moravia, as far as I know, they have a bye this week.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Is that what you have on them?
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: Yes, as far as I know, also a bye.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: All right, that completes our first quarter.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Now we'll roll into the second quarter, and Nate will give us a review of the eastern section four football teams.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: So maybe some things we haven't already covered a little bit.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: Now, as we were going through the first quarter, Nate dove a little deep on some things, and then this will this is an opportunity for Nate to share with our fans out there in the eastern section of section four.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: So take it away, Nate.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: Well, I certainly appreciate you giving me the opportunity because I think uh a lot of the teams that I cover, a lot of the schools that I cover, uh, we're in a strange geographical area here where there's not a lot of newspaper coverage.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Uh so I'm doing my best to get out to these games.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: Our goal is to always do as many games on the radio as we can.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: We try to get to each school that's in our coverage area at least once.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: That might be a little hard to do during the shortened season, but we try to spread the love to everybody.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: So I guess I'll start right off the top with Sydney.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: As you said, a team that's 0-2, but filling in some new roles.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: And I think it all kind of revolves around uh their quarterback and Peyton Mosier.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: Uh, he's a baseball kid, he's gonna go play at Courtland next year, uh, which I know you'll like, Coach.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, he's a great young man.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: And if he can get out into space, I think that's one of the things to where they've had a lot of success.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: And they also have some great sides on the line.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: A couple of those guys are gonna go on and play college ball.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: And so Coach Matthews has really been leaning on those guys to try to create some space there for Peyton.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: So I think, as you said, uh, you know, Sydney will be okay in the long run.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: Uh for Unitigo, next one of my eight-man teams that I cover.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: I mentioned a little bit about the running game there.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: I had a chance to really sit down and talk with Coach McCrony before their game last week, and he mentioned a lot about learning the eight-man game.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: You know, they just transitioned from 11-man to eight-man this year, and they're learning a lot.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: And so it's it's not only the athletes, but it's the coaching staff learning about uh what it takes to have some success at the eight-man level.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, and so far they're doing it.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: I think the first week ran into a little bit of a buzzsaw there with Spencer, Van Hett, and Candor, but they seem to find their way last week against Unadilla Valley.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: For BG, uh again, I'll be seeing them tonight.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: Have not seen them in person yet.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, but a young team that has spent a lot of time in the offseason, in the weight room specifically, trying to get bigger, stronger, faster.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: And Coach Lormer there has a great, uh, a great nose for the game, really knows his stuff.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: And so I think that they'll be fine, especially going down the road.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: He's trying to build for long-term success there, and I like that.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: Uh Harper Zillafton is next.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: I was so impressed with them last week against Sydney.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: They have uh some great leaders at the quarterback position and in the backfield, and they were able to throw it around a little bit too, and they just looked hungry.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: And that's what I really liked about Harper Zillafton.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: I noticed that more than almost any other team I've seen so far this year, I thought they just looked so hungry to get out there and so happy to be back out on the field.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: And that really stuck out to me.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: Uh Deposit Hancock, another team that I have not seen yet, and unfortunately for them, they've kind of been struck down by the quarantine so far this year.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: Uh so I'll be interested to see what happens with them traditionally, a very tough and rugged program down there that has a lot of strong running backs and plays really good fundamental defense, and I would expect to see the same from them going forward.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: I talked a little bit about Green, another eight-man team that I cover.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, they're so well coached over there.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: And again, a transition from 11-man to eight-man, but they seem to be doing it very well, and they have some horses there, especially in the backfield, uh, in Tristan Austin, a guy that if you can get him to the outside and get him one block, he's gonna be gone.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited to watch Green uh in the coming weeks.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: Unidilla Valley, again, I mentioned that unfortunately their top player, Kyler Butts, is out with an injury from that week one contest.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, he'll be playing at St.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: John Fisher next year.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, but they've just really kind of put their program back on the map for the last couple of years.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: And I think they're gonna continue to do that.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: Another team that is very hungry to compete right now.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, next up would be Oxford.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: I've not seen them yet.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: An eight-man team uh that has a really experienced line.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: A couple of those guys are gonna be going on and playing in college.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: And I love seeing those guys that work so hard in the trenches get some recognition and that they get to move on and play at the next level.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: So I would expect to see a nice season out of Oxford.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: And then I would have Walton next.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: I just had a chance to talk on my podcast with the Hoovers not long ago.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: I had Jim and Adam on the podcast and just learned so much about their system and the way that they like to do things and all the different plays and just the uh attention to detail that they have there.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: So I know that Walton's gonna be fine again, as you said, coming in at one and one, and I think they uh are really looking forward to this game with Sydney this week.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Del High, I think, would be my favorite right now for one of the top teams in the area because they have a veteran quarterback, a veteran running back, and some guys on the outside at wide receiver and tight end that can really do some special things.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: If we were in a full season, I would be very interested to see uh what Delhi could do.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: I think the gold standard in our area is how do you do against Tyoga?
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: And I would love to see a team like Delhi get a chance this year to go up against the Tyoga.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: That's one of those matchups that I would love to see happen, but uh unfortunately, with the way things are, that's uh that's the way it is.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: But I would say Delhi is one of the stronger teams in my coverage area.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: And that leads me to my last two of Onianta and Norwich.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: I think Norwich first is so well coached by Coach Christie, as you know.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: I loved listening to his episode on the cover four.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: And uh I I think, as you said, they go as their quarterback goes.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: And uh from everything that I'm hearing, uh Griffin Mills will be back this week, and that should bode well for them.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Uh very attention to detail type of team, and I think that they'll be fine.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: And Oniata is the last team, and they seem to have some new life under head coach Will Neal.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, getting that victory over Walton 21 to nothing.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: They'll have a chance on the road here at BG.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: I'm excited to see them play some teams more up this way instead of going down to the Binghamton area.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's a better chance for me to see them.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Some new faces there.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: I think they're pretty young, but they seem to be buying in, and the energy seems a lot different there this year.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: So that's kind of a quick breakdown of all the teams that I see regularly here on WCDO.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: Great overview, Nate.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Thank you very much.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: I appreciate there's a lot of great insight there.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: And I uh I know our listeners are gonna really enjoy that, and that's what this whole podcast is about, and that's why I started it is to give uh everybody an opportunity.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: It's the tag of the podcast is everyone section four of football.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: And that's literally what I'm trying to do.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: And it's not only on the field, it's anybody in a support capacity, fans, those kinds of things.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: If you listen to any of the podcasts, you'll you'll get that flavor from it.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: So I really appreciate that.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: And it's nice to hear you talk about the linemen.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Now, I was an occasional ball carrier or receiver, but it you really do appreciate the linemen.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: They don't get a lot of the notoriety they deserve because a lot of that goes to the people carrying the football or throwing the football.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: But there is a uh a lot that they do, and you know, it's kind of difficult to hear, but a lot of times you don't hear anything about them unless it's a for a penalty.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: And I'm talking like the collegiate game and the uh professional, they they call out the player and the number.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: And uh on the podcast, I actually had uh earlier this season, right after the Super Bowl, I had Joe Gilbert, who is a Section Four alumni for Horseheads, and he's the offensive line coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: And we talked in in detail about you know the need and quality of linemen because other things don't happen.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: And he he would reference Tom when we were talking.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: He means Tom Brady, because you know, Tom doesn't do certain things if you know he's sitting on his rear end or he's you know knocked back and tackled.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot that goes into that.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: And also it's good to see student athletes going on to play at the collegiate level.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: That's one of the things I've done in the past is is recruited student athletes.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: And I looked, you know, scoured section four, and they the good student athletes aren't necessarily always at a quote unquote bigger school.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: You know, they are student athletes anywhere that can play.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: And it was it was nice to see that as well and hear you talk about that.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Nate, uh, want to give you a chance to talk a little bit about your podcast and your broadcast information so so we can listen into some games uh that you have.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: If you're uh if you're up this way and you're in the car or anything, uh you can tune us in at 100.9 FM, also at 1490 a.m.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: on the radio dial.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: If you're a little bit farther out, you can always go to wcdosports.com and our web stream is uh free service there.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: It's just the audio only, no video, uh, but you can go there and listen anytime, and it does work on uh on your phone as well.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: So those are the best two ways to listen to our games.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: All right, thank you.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: Then what I'll do is I'll put that information in the show notes so we can uh our listeners can get to that.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: I think that wraps up, Nate, the first and second quarter, and it's gonna roll us right into halftime.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: So I want to thank you for taking the time on this Tuesday afternoon, and now you got a ball game tonight.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's gonna be pretty cool.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: The Oniana Bainbridge Guildford game.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: So good luck with that and best wishes to you and keep doing what you're doing.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: Thanks so much for having me on.
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: I appreciate it.

- 33:55SPEAKER_01: It's time to ask Coach Smith.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: Today's question for Coach Smith is from Arnie and Joseph.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: We want to know why linemen can't declare themselves as eligible receivers.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: Under the National Federation of State High School Associations rules, in order for a student athlete to be an eligible receiver, they must meet two criteria.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: One is the position they line up in, and the second is their jersey number.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Eligible receiver positions are the two student athletes on each end of the line of scrimmage and the four student athletes in the backfield.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: While in those positions and wearing jersey numbers one through 49 or 80 through 99, they are eligible to receive a legal forward pass.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: The receiver numbers in the 90s can be confusing because most receivers don't normally choose to wear those numbers.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: Thank you for your question.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: If you or someone you know would like to learn more about football, don't worry, we've got you covered.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: Visit cover4.com.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: And remember that's a Roman numeral four.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Cover4.com.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: That'll get you there.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: Under the football courses section, select one of your courses.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: We have two courses.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: One is called Football Fundamentals, and that's if you know a little bit or nothing about football, but want a much more thorough understanding of all aspects of football, football fundamentals is your course.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: If you already know quite a bit about football and have you know a very good understanding, but want to know more or get into coaching football, beyond fundamentals is a course you should take.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: Take care.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the fourth quarter of the Cover Four podcast, Coach's Corner.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Today our guest is Roger Neal, and he will be discussing four games of the week.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: Welcome, Roger.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: And Tim, thank you.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: Yes, indeed.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: Um, as we're getting out this week, pretty much midway in the shortened season, things are getting very exciting.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: And what a highlight we have to start things off at a Class C battle.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: I don't know what gets any better than this this season, or perhaps anywhere in the last couple of years, defending state champions coming at a class C duel between Chenago Forks and Susquehanna Valley at SV.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: And to me, I know coaches will disagree to an extent.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: But hey, Lucas Scott, the standout, the bull, what a rusher and a tremendous football player for the forks against Logan Haskell, who does it all for Susquehanna Valley.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: Two standouts, sure, it's team-oriented.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: We get that.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: But how do you get two better players anywhere in the region?
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: The Lucas Scott and Logan Haskell.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: That is going to be one premier matchup.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: The Forks has not given up any points yet.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: 48 to nothing over Windsor.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: And then in the season opener, they shot out Chedago Valley 40-0.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, SV last week, in what we thought might be a lot closer game, not really any contest.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: SB blew out Norwich 39-6.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: And before that, they opened up on the road at Alumni Stadium, beat Binghamton 53-13.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: And so the teams are rolling the forks again for 88 4 and 0 again.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: So they have the offense clicking behind, of course, the standout Lucas Scott.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: That's going to be a tremendous game.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: Also, Main and Well matching up at Johnson City, the Sparcat trophy on the line.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: And this always is an outstanding game.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: These two teams go right at it, neighborhood battle, and it should be a tremendous game.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: For Maine and Well, and he has played very well out of the gate.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: They were able to uh come up with a victory over Binghamton 58 to 7 in uh the Opera 53-7.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: And so they played well.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: JC comes in one and one.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: The Wildcats improved this year.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: They beat UE 24-19 in the opener.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: How about Walton at Sydney?
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Walton comes in one and one.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: And last week, Walton was able to beat Whitney.40 to 32.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: In the first week, Oliana stopped Walton 21-0.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: So they're one and one.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: Sydney's 0-2.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: And a big thing for them, their defense has really been uh struggling.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: They've given up in the first two games, 52 points each.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: So 104 points given up by their defense in the first two outings.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: They've scored 58.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: So Sydney needs to get the defense on the right track.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: Walton, of course, trying to come up with a victory at Sydney.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: Eight-man football.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: 11 teams in the area now playing eight-man football.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: We're highlighting in this one Spencer Vanett and Kander at Newfield.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Newfield comes in 2-0, and they were able last week to beat Lansing 48-14.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: Week one, Newfield 74, Thomas Edison 16.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: We talk about a high-powered offense, 122 points in two games, 61 points a game average in the first two outings.
