- 0:18Speaker 2: Go It's.
- 0:21Speaker 1: So natural You belong to me I belong to you
- 0:26Speaker 1: Oh To the end of the road Till I can't
- 0:36Speaker 1: let go It's so natural.
- 0:42Speaker 2: You belong to me. I belong to you. Oh! All right. Well,
- 0:54Speaker 2: this is the end of the road. This is, yes.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Grand finals done.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Well, we've got some other things, some exciting sport opportunities
- 1:00Speaker 3: coming up.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I think there's some boxing action coming up in the
- 1:04Speaker 2: next couple of weeks. Vote a friend. And we've got
- 1:07Speaker 2: the test. The cricket.
- 1:08Speaker 1: The cricket time.
- 1:09Speaker 2: How's that? Good. How's that? Yeah, so we'll get into
- 1:12Speaker 2: the Australian team in the next podcast. I wish there
- 1:14Speaker 2: was a test in Brisbane. The kangaroos? Yeah, yeah. So, GF,
- 1:19Speaker 2: what did you think? Oh, it played out the way
- 1:23Speaker 2: I thought it was going to.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Across the day, it was actually a really, really hot
- 1:28Speaker 4: day in Sydney.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You were working down there? I was working down there
- 1:31Speaker 2: the Saturday. Because you had a suit on, though?
- 1:33Speaker 4: Yeah, actually, probably because I did have a suit on.
- 1:36Speaker 4: But there was a massive big storm that rolled through
- 1:40Speaker 4: on the Saturday and it kind of made it really humid.
- 1:43Speaker 4: So the first game was the state championship.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I ruined all my multis.
- 1:46Speaker 4: The Dolphins absolutely blitzed it, killed it in that game.
- 1:49Speaker 4: And they had a bit of NRL experience within their team.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Felice Capusi was playing. There's a break between when they
- 1:56Speaker 4: finished that game. There's a week, isn't there, in between?
- 1:59Speaker 2: No, there's not. No, but isn't it the next week? Yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 5: I always thought there was a week in between, and
- 2:05Speaker 5: that's what the issue was, I thought. No, no, no.
- 2:07Speaker 2: No? Okay. It was bang, bang. Okay.
- 2:11Speaker 4: And, yeah, the Dolphins were just way too good. It
- 2:14Speaker 4: actually just shows you how well the Dolphins and the
- 2:18Speaker 4: Panthers are as clubs at the moment. So I think
- 2:23Speaker 4: maybe even in the.
- 2:24Speaker 2: BRO– Maybe the Dolphins won that. Dolphins won everything. They
- 2:27Speaker 2: won reserve grade. They won 19. They won all comps,
- 2:30Speaker 2: didn't they? Pretty much. I'm certain they did. They won
- 2:33Speaker 2: so many comps.
- 2:34Speaker 4: It just shows that it's a healthy club and a
- 2:36Speaker 4: unique club that, yeah, you can play under sixes.
- 2:38Speaker 2: All the way down. How many NRL players they had?
- 2:39Speaker 2: The Penrith Panthers as well.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Penrith Panthers, again, I think because they kind of feed
- 2:44Speaker 4: a junior club as St. Mary's, which is in that
- 2:47Speaker 4: Penrith region. And they would absolutely blitz it as well.
- 2:50Speaker 4: So two really, really healthy clubs at the end of
- 2:54Speaker 4: the day. NRLW was super disappointing. I think the hardest
- 2:58Speaker 4: part was a lot of our senior players were the
- 3:00Speaker 4: ones that were You know, not playing great to start
- 3:04Speaker 4: off with.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But that Roosters team. Oh, no. Mate, that Roosters team
- 3:07Speaker 2: was unbelievable.
- 3:08Speaker 4: We played a Roosters team last year without Taryn Aitken,
- 3:11Speaker 4: who ended up, she's the woman of the match, the
- 3:14Speaker 4: player of the match.
- 3:15Speaker 2: And she is an incredible player. She's a great, great player.
- 3:19Speaker 4: And then, you know, you've got these veterans like Isabel
- 3:23Speaker 4: Kelly and Jess Sergis who are just absolute beasts.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Elliot, she got married. Oh, Elliot, sorry. Sorry. I was like,
- 3:31Speaker 2: you're looking at me weird. Why? Did I say something wrong? Yeah, Elliot, sorry.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Even the fullback, Corbin Baxter. So there was so many
- 3:37Speaker 2: more inclusions within. So if anything, the Roosters team, which
- 3:41Speaker 2: we beat last year, got better.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And we just beat them. Yes.
- 3:45Speaker 4: And our team probably got, I wouldn't say worse, but
- 3:49Speaker 4: a lot less experience.
- 3:50Speaker 2: So we lose Gail Broughton, Mele Ufunga. So many more. Right.
- 3:55Speaker 2: And then we had some young girls that were playing
- 3:57Speaker 2: in there. But the Roosters team, they play that all year. Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Every game they played like a perfect game.
- 4:04Speaker 2: They really dominated that.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I think they're 31 from 32 games.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Like that, yeah. The last three years. It's an
- 4:11Speaker 2: incredible team.
- 4:12Speaker 4: The only team that beat them was the Broncos last
- 4:14Speaker 4: year in the grand final.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. That's crazy. Yeah. And then in the main game.
- 4:21Speaker 2: It was a great game. Newcastle, you could see they
- 4:25Speaker 2: were tired.
- 4:26Speaker 4: The Roosters really had a great game plan, and it
- 4:30Speaker 4: was to bash the hell out of them and kick
- 4:32Speaker 4: it to the corner. So they kicked it high to
- 4:34Speaker 4: Greg Marjou all day and then chased down there.
- 4:38Speaker 2: They got a few 50-50s.
- 4:40Speaker 4: They got a couple of one-on-one aerial battles going.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And they just stuck to it. And I think that.
- 4:48Speaker 4: The try just before halftime from the Roosters, that was
- 4:52Speaker 4: their belief. So if Newcastle had a 12-0 at halftime,
- 4:56Speaker 4: you know, maybe they'd go away from that game plan,
- 4:58Speaker 4: but they just stuck.
- 4:59Speaker 2: To it because it was a working form.
- 5:01Speaker 5: To me, it was the positives and the negatives. And
- 5:05Speaker 5: you look at, okay, the positives for Newcastle, they scored
- 5:10Speaker 5: off kicks. the Roosters scored off kicks.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 5: They couldn't break their defense. They couldn't break them. And,
- 5:18Speaker 5: you know, that is a massive positive for them. Their
- 5:21Speaker 5: negative is they dropped too many balls.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 5: And I don't care how much possession you say Roosters had.
- 5:27Speaker 5: It's because their errors were horrible. Their discipline was poor.
- 5:30Speaker 5: And they should be, you know, sitting at home going,
- 5:34Speaker 5: we should have won that game.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Like we hold the ball. I reckon they win.
- 5:38Speaker 5: I truly believe that they still were– They're still one
- 5:41Speaker 5: of the best teams of the year with their defense.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Like the last two months, teams can't score.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Like if you can do that, you win most games.
- 5:50Speaker 5: And what you have to do on the flip side
- 5:53Speaker 5: is hold the ball. Yeah. And the Roosters just showed
- 5:56Speaker 5: why the Roosters have been so good for so many
- 5:58Speaker 5: years and will do it for so much longer.
- 6:00Speaker 2: They completed.
- 6:02Speaker 5: They didn't go away from their game plan.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Their defense was incredible. And they just didn't let go.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:10Speaker 5: They didn't give. They didn't give anything. Kick chase didn't give.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Their runs never, like they didn't give on anything. And
- 6:17Speaker 5: that is the positive for them. Their negative was the.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Knights scored easily when they had the opportunity.
- 6:23Speaker 4: The first try was such a smart try.
- 6:27Speaker 2: It was a great try.
- 6:29Speaker 4: It was very, very well thought out at the end
- 6:31Speaker 4: of the day because the panic of Callum Ponger out
- 6:34Speaker 4: the back and trying to chase him. Um, because that's
- 6:39Speaker 4: what he does. He, he loved that side of the field.
- 6:41Speaker 4: He would skip and try to get a three on
- 6:44Speaker 4: two and then they played short instead.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So yeah, that was a great hole. That was one
- 6:48Speaker 2: of the best running.
- 6:51Speaker 3: It seems so easy that everyone just thought that there
- 6:52Speaker 3: must be an obstruction.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And like nothing. Yeah. You say that, um, the, the
- 6:58Speaker 2: back row defended that poorly.
- 6:59Speaker 5: The only thing that background did, and it's what we
- 7:01Speaker 5: used to, we used to train like this is all you.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Want that background to do is a lean. It's only
- 7:06Speaker 2: a lean. And there's your hole. That's the split second
- 7:09Speaker 2: where you go on. And that's all he did was just, oh.
- 7:14Speaker 2: That was a beautiful hole. Everyone thinks that hole was
- 7:17Speaker 2: 16 metres.
- 7:17Speaker 5: That hole was like that.
- 7:21Speaker 3: What about James Tedesco? You think about his year. He
- 7:23Speaker 3: got dropped from Origin last year. You could think that
- 7:29Speaker 3: he's done representative-wise. Not only does he play his way
- 7:32Speaker 3: back into the Origin team and play brilliantly, but then
- 7:35Speaker 3: takes his team to the grand final, then plays player
- 7:37Speaker 3: of the game in the grand final.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 2: He ran 300 metres or something.
- 7:41Speaker 5: A lot of people keep saying that he shouldn't have
- 7:43Speaker 5: got it. I've seen a few things about he shouldn't
- 7:45Speaker 5: have got it. I'm like, eh, how does he not
- 7:47Speaker 5: get it? My thing is, if Roosters won during the
- 7:51Speaker 5: last 10 minutes of that game, Roosters win, Tedesco gets it.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Knights win. Callum Ponga. Ponga. It's simple.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Like 35 carries in nearly 400 meters.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 5: That is a performance by a fullback that you won't
- 8:04Speaker 5: see ever again or if not for a long time.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Did you see one weird stat?
- 8:07Speaker 3: Did you see how many tackles he made?
- 8:10Speaker 4: No.
- 8:10Speaker 2: To Desco? How many? Zero. But do you know what
- 8:12Speaker 2: that means? That's good. Isn't that incredible? But you know
- 8:14Speaker 2: what that means though? That means the front line defense
- 8:16Speaker 2: is there. The front line is doing their job. Not
- 8:18Speaker 2: one tackle. Yeah. Man of the match. It kind of...
- 8:22Speaker 2: it shows how the roost is defended.
- 8:24Speaker 4: So what they did is they didn't even let Newcastle
- 8:26Speaker 4: get out of their end. So Newcastle's first try comes
- 8:29Speaker 4: off the back of a penalty, which is a piggyback
- 8:30Speaker 4: down the field.
- 8:32Speaker 2: A second try comes off a bat back, which Calum
- 8:34Speaker 2: put in the right place at the right time. They
- 8:36Speaker 2: planned for it.
- 8:37Speaker 4: You could see that because, um, Calum kind of figured
- 8:40Speaker 4: out that that's what they were doing.
- 8:41Speaker 2: For the first four, five kicks. You'd see it. Hey,
- 8:43Speaker 2: he would be always in there.
- 8:45Speaker 4: And then he put himself into that position to, to
- 8:47Speaker 4: make sure he could get the ball.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yeah. Um, So, yeah, it just shows how well the
- 8:51Speaker 2: Roosters defended. And they bashed the hell out of them.
- 8:54Speaker 2: They did. And, honestly, the Knights kept turning up. Yeah.
- 8:58Speaker 5: I was a bit disappointed in a couple of the
- 9:00Speaker 5: outside backs for Newcastle. I really was just because I
- 9:03Speaker 5: thought they would have lifted for the game.
- 9:05Speaker 2: And their outside backs are– Incredible.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Like, incredible. The outside backs were covered, though. So, Dan
- 9:14Speaker 2: Gagai couldn't do what Dan Gagai could. No, no, no.
- 9:16Speaker 5: They couldn't do much, but it was the drops is
- 9:19Speaker 5: what I thought. You know, as an outside back in
- 9:22Speaker 5: the big game, you just, like, I remember I did
- 9:24Speaker 5: it and it sucked. And I've always, I used to
- 9:27Speaker 5: blame myself if we had lost, you know, because I'm like,
- 9:29Speaker 5: that's my job. Even the carries, you know, dropping off
- 9:32Speaker 5: a carry, your team's got to defend, your boys got
- 9:34Speaker 5: to defend.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Who do you reckon from the Knights, who do you
- 9:36Speaker 3: reckon is putting it on their shoulders the most?
- 9:39Speaker 2: Who do you reckon probably feels like they screwed up?
- 9:42Speaker 2: The guy that didn't play.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Yeah, right.
- 9:46Speaker 4: He was really, really emotional after the game. I saw
- 9:50Speaker 4: him sitting out there on the field by himself. He
- 9:54Speaker 4: had his game jersey on. He had his number nine
- 9:56Speaker 4: jersey on, which was really, really good to see.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think, you know, I think he was the
- 10:03Speaker 4: best defensive player or made the most tackles in the.
- 10:08Speaker 2: End of the season. He makes a difference because, one,
- 10:11Speaker 2: he's the number nine. He gives great service. He brings
- 10:15Speaker 2: an extra kicking element to their team. He tackles everything
- 10:19Speaker 2: that bloody moves. He leads their line speed for me. Yeah.
- 10:22Speaker 5: It's what I noticed a lot with Knights and what
- 10:25Speaker 5: they missed.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Their line speed dropped off. Yep.
- 10:28Speaker 5: And then that's when the Roosters started getting over him.
- 10:31Speaker 5: And in my head I went, that's where he would
- 10:33Speaker 5: normally be.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Yeah. He would normally lead that.
- 10:35Speaker 5: And he would actually come up with plays too.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Like he'd throw a hit in there and
- 10:40Speaker 2: actually pop a ball out. Right. And I think he
- 10:45Speaker 2: needs to hold his head high still because– He's had
- 10:47Speaker 2: one of the greatest years. He's had a great year.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And this is him now. This is his stepping stone.
- 10:50Speaker 2: This is him. That's his standard now. Now he keeps going.
- 10:53Speaker 5: And this is where I go for next year, like, oh,
- 10:56Speaker 5: the Knights are– like Ponga has amazed.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Me all year, like with his leadership game.
- 11:03Speaker 5: He's grown where he is now with his game and
- 11:05Speaker 5: with his leadership and his composure. That team, for me,
- 11:10Speaker 5: they can really do something now for the next– two,
- 11:13Speaker 5: three years. They really can with a couple.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Of those guys. Yeah, Sandon Smith.
- 11:17Speaker 4: You get a couple of Fords back in the middle
- 11:19Speaker 4: as well.
- 11:20Speaker 2: You get Cy Feeney back. You get their Million Dollar
- 11:22Speaker 2: Man and Brown back. The team is set up. I
- 11:26Speaker 2: think that's where they were a little bit skinny. There
- 11:28Speaker 2: were a couple of middle Fords skinny. They're young. 17
- 11:31Speaker 2: games and 15 games, two of them.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I know.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:35Speaker 2: But they'll only get better.
- 11:37Speaker 4: It was almost a case of, The Roosters were playing
- 11:40Speaker 4: chess and the Knights were playing checkers.
- 11:43Speaker 2: It was very, very well thought out.
- 11:45Speaker 5: It was a great game of rugby league, if I'm honest.
- 11:50Speaker 5: I still get goosebumps thinking about it because I thought
- 11:51Speaker 5: that was one of the all-time grand final.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I just thought it was great. I'll take my hat
- 11:56Speaker 2: off to the ref. Let it go. Let it play.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Tackles that we copped every week. that were penalized all year.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 2: He didn't do it. I loved it.
- 12:07Speaker 5: I'm like, yes.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Like, yes, the game is, just let it go.
- 12:12Speaker 5: Like, I thought that if they can do that next
- 12:14Speaker 5: year for every game, I'd be so happy. Like, the accidental,
- 12:19Speaker 5: you know, where the arm hits the ball, goes up,
- 12:20Speaker 5: hits the chin, play on. You know, the big boys
- 12:23Speaker 5: going at it, a little bit of a shoulder charge.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Who cares? He didn't hit anyone in the head. But
- 12:26Speaker 2: there was no hit in the head.
- 12:28Speaker 5: There was no illegal hit. You know, it wasn't from
- 12:31Speaker 5: 30 metres away. It was like the last two seconds, oh,
- 12:34Speaker 5: he's squared me up-ish. You know, I'll just give him some.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Like, I loved it. I actually really enjoyed the whole game.
- 12:41Speaker 2: It was good. Great, great. It was a great grand final.
- 12:43Speaker 2: I think it was good, too, seeing a couple of
- 12:45Speaker 2: different people in the grand final as well. Yeah, that too.
- 12:49Speaker 2: And seeing nights there. Yeah, yeah. I think you've seen
- 12:51Speaker 2: the passion.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Seen so much passion that I think a lot of
- 12:55Speaker 5: supporters had forgotten about.
- 12:58Speaker 3: There's 23 players named for the Australian team. So we're
- 13:01Speaker 3: going to come back in tomorrow's podcast and go through
- 13:04Speaker 3: who we actually think is going to take the field.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 3: And maybe who might have got robbed this time around.
- 13:09Speaker 3: So we'll do that tomorrow on the podcast.
