Transcript
- 0:20Welcome everybody to segment two of Grape Expectations on Coffee In The Park with Jennifer and Cam.
- 0:26Jennifer.
- 0:27We hope you all listened to last month's episode of Grape Expectations, and it was one of my favorites.
- 0:33It was amazing.
- 0:35I learned so much.
- 0:36We did, we did two wines, we learned some incredible things, they tasted great, and we learned things like how to cleanse our palate, we learned about what cheeses go with wine, and that's what is really exciting about this segment.
- 0:47That's right.
- 0:48And if you didn't listen to the last month's segment, you need to go back and take a listen.
- 0:53That's right, because it will be important for this month's segment.
- 0:57So hey, like Jennifer says, go back, take a listen, and then listen to this.
- 1:00So Jennifer, why don't you introduce, as always, not only our special guest, but our wine expert today?
- 1:07She is, she is our resident wine expert.
- 1:10She is the absolutely amazing Karen Principe.
- 1:14Welcome back, Karen.
- 1:15Well hello! Welcome, Karen.
- 1:17Good to have you.
- 1:18I'm so excited to be back. Always a good time.
- 1:20Today is very exciting.
- 1:22Yes, it is.
- 1:23Yeah.
- 1:23Cause I know you got good stuff. It's gonna be great.
- 1:25Oh yeah, you better believe it.
- 1:27We have a couple of new wines to test out.
- 1:29Yeah, yeah.
- 1:30So we're going to sample a red wine and a white wine today.
- 1:35And the first one is a Cabernet Sauvignon.
- 1:38Okay.
- 1:39And it is from Argentina.
- 1:40Jennifer, would you do me a favor and pour wine, a little bit of wine of the Cabernet Sauvignon for each of us?
- 1:46And I need to let the listeners know that last time, we started with the white wine first. This week.
- 1:52We're starting with red. Yes.
- 1:53That's right.
- 1:54But I also, that's a good point.
- 1:55I also want to add that last week, Karen taught us how to cleanse our palates.
- 2:00That's right.
- 2:01By eating a little bit of maybe white bread.
- 2:03Yes, exactly.
- 2:04That was fantastic.
- 2:05And to cleanse our noses with a little bit of coffee beans.
- 2:10So folks, we've done that already in preparation for this segment, but if you maybe just sat down and had something to eat or something like that, if you got a little bit of bread, try that before you try the wine and use a little coffee beans to cleanse the breathing apparatus.
- 2:25Or remember sniff your forearm.
- 2:26Sniff yourself.
- 2:27That's right.
- 2:29Sniff yourself.
- 2:31That's carried with me all month.
- 2:32I'm walking around sniffing myself now.
- 2:34People think I'm a little bit weird, but it really does work.
- 2:37It's incredible.
- 2:37It does.
- 2:38It's pretty amazing.
- 2:39All right.
- 2:39So tell us about this.
- 2:40Tell us about this wine.
- 2:41So this wine is the Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina.
- 2:45It's called 1884.
- 2:48Now, when you taste this, you might smell some oak.
- 2:55I'm not sure.
- 2:56I smell oak.
- 2:57Yes, I do.
- 2:59It's a little bit of oak.
- 3:01Can you smell the oak, Cam?
- 3:02No, I can.
- 3:03See, this is fascinating because as I've said, I'm not a big wine drinker.
- 3:06So all of these things that when you say, Yeah, I can smell oak.
- 3:10That's pretty cool.
- 3:11So in this one, it's dark fruits.
- 3:14So this is a bolder wine, a full body wine.
- 3:17And you might taste some darker fruits, like a plum, blackberry kind of fruits.
- 3:23Black cherry.
- 3:24Yeah.
- 3:25And a spice, a little bit of spice.
- 3:28And it's very mild.
- 3:29Yeah.
- 3:30Yeah.
- 3:30And interesting, you might even taste a little bit of bell pepper.
- 3:36Oh.
- 3:36So yeah, sometimes there's a vegetable taste to wines.
- 3:40Now, why is that Karen?
- 3:42Like, can you tell us, like you tell us, it has the hints of this and this and this and that.
- 3:47Why?
- 3:47How do those come?
- 3:48Well, there are different reasons why wines taste different.
- 3:51It can be where they're grown.
- 3:53So it's the type of soil, the type of climate, how it's manufactured, but also just the genetics of the grape itself can bring out different flavors.
- 4:04Does harvesting and bottling have anything to do with it?
- 4:07It does, it does.
- 4:08But you know the genetics, just stay tuned to later on in this segment.
- 4:13You might learn a little something about the genetics of the grapes.
- 4:15I love it.
- 4:16Yeah.
- 4:17All right.
- 4:18And you might taste a little bit of vanilla in this one.
- 4:21And tannins.
- 4:22So the tannins are a little bit stronger.
- 4:25And in another episode, we'll actually learn more about tannins.
- 4:27Yeah.
- 4:28I was going to say what I'm not, I don't know.
- 4:29I've never heard about tannins.
- 4:30Well, we'll learn that.
- 4:31Okay.
- 4:31We'll save it for another episode.
- 4:33And again, this one compared to last month's episode where we did kind of a blend of Merlot and, you know, it was more of a Bordeau.
- 4:42This one definitely has more legs to it as a cabernet.
- 4:45Yes.
- 4:45Very good.
- 4:46Yeah.
- 4:47You're right.
- 4:47It is, it is a bolder wine.
- 4:49Yeah.
- 4:49It's very, I like it.
- 4:50And this one is one that you would want to pair with beef or lamb or game.
- 4:57Yeah.
- 4:57A bolder, a bolder meal.
- 5:00And with the cheeses, we have a lovely cheese here that we can also pair with it.
- 5:07A sharp cheese or an aged cheddar cheese, it would go well with this wine.
- 5:14Good cheese.
- 5:15Isn't that good.
- 5:18Good wine.
- 5:19It enhances the flavor.
- 5:21Doesn't it?
- 5:21Both ways.
- 5:22It goes both ways.
- 5:23For the cheese and for the wine.
- 5:24Right?
- 5:25I like that.
- 5:27I like that.
- 5:28That's good, eh?
- 5:28So good.
- 5:30To me that, when I have that cheese with the wine, it brings out the spice.
- 5:34Oh yeah.
- 5:35Yes, I agree with you.
- 5:36You agree?
- 5:37100%.
- 5:37It brings out the spice.
- 5:38It does.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:40I like that.
- 5:42Isn't that great?
- 5:44And so tell us about the Argentina region.
- 5:46Is it well known for its wine?
- 5:49It is, yeah.
- 5:49Argentina is well known for its wine.
- 5:52Mendoza region is quite popular.
- 5:56And again, it has a lot to do with the soil type and the climate.
- 6:01It's a good...
- 6:021884.
- 6:031884.
- 6:04Not to be confused with Yellowstone or 1883.
- 6:08You were thinking that, weren't you?
- 6:09I was looking over at you.
- 6:112022, Agrello Mendoza.
- 6:17Not sure what that means, but yeah 1884.
- 6:18Yeah, Mendoza is the region in Argentina.
- 6:21Okay.
- 6:21Estate grown.
- 6:23It says the texture is smooth and pleasant.
- 6:28It is.
- 6:28I would agree.
- 6:30Smooth and pleasant.
- 6:31The advertising is right on.
- 6:33That's very complex.
- 6:34I just wish our listeners could be enjoying it with us, but please do enjoy it yourselves. You need to try this.
- 6:39We'll put this up on our website so you can take a look at it.
- 6:42So when you go to your favorite wine store, you'll know exactly what you're looking for.
- 6:46Exactly.
- 6:46And yeah, I still say we need to sell tickets to these segments and pack the room and let everybody taste it because this is really incredible.
- 6:54This is something else.
- 6:55I really like this.
- 6:56Oh, great.
- 6:56I'm glad you enjoy it.
- 6:57I'm so glad.
- 6:58So now we're going to try, oh.
- 7:00Jennifer, would you mind pouring us some white wine here, please?
- 7:03I sure can.
- 7:04So this wine is our Sauvignon Blanc.
- 7:07Ah, Sauvignon Blanc.
- 7:08Yeah, this is a white wine from New Zealand.
- 7:12Yeah, New Zealand is quite well known for their Sauvignon Blanc.
- 7:17This one, when you taste this, you might taste some tropical fruits.
- 7:23That, the, do you smell that?
- 7:25Yeah.
- 7:26Like, okay, I still have a little bit of the, of the 1884.
- 7:31I'm taking a sniff of that.
- 7:32Now I know I'm supposed to cleanse my palate, but significantly different, significantly.
- 7:38And very nice.
- 7:39Right.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:40Isn't that nice?
- 7:42Hang on.
- 7:42I gotta, I'm doing, yeah, coffee bean.
- 7:44Yeah.
- 7:46There you go.
- 7:48Yeah.
- 7:48Oh yeah.
- 7:49And a little bit of citrus in this one.
- 7:51Very citrusy in this one.
- 7:52Yeah.
- 7:53And this one also fresh herbs.
- 7:55We might be getting a hint of fresh herbs here, which is, it's really nice that we have a dill Havarti cheese to sample with this one because it would compliment it well.
- 8:06Okay, try the cheese.
- 8:07Let's try the cheese.
- 8:08Okay, try the cheese.
- 8:08Okay, yeah.
- 8:12Mm, mm, mm.
- 8:14Oh, I love that cheese.
- 8:15Isn't that good?
- 8:16Oh, I love that.
- 8:18That's good cheese.
- 8:19Yeah.
- 8:19For a meal, you might like to pair it with seafood, even a grilled cheese sandwich.
- 8:24No kidding, eh?
- 8:26Or chicken skewers.
- 8:27Okay.
- 8:28I just love that Karen said wine and grilled cheese.
- 8:30Yes.
- 8:32Yeah.
- 8:32Yeah.
- 8:32We have to be practical.
- 8:33Do you know what we forgot?
- 8:34Cheesies.
- 8:35My Hawkins cheesies.
- 8:36Oh, yes.
- 8:36That's next month's episode.
- 8:38Karen, that's next month's.
- 8:40Jennifer will sit and eat a bag of Hawkins while she has a few sips of wine.
- 8:45I'll find the right wine to pair with it.
- 8:46I'm going to take another bite of my dill cheese.
- 8:48That really does bring out- And a drink of my Sauvignon Blanc.
- 8:52You're right.
- 8:52The herbs in it.
- 8:53Yeah, it does.
- 8:54It does.
- 8:56So this is the interesting fact I wanted to talk to you about.
- 9:00Incredible.
- 9:01So I'm not sure if you notice in the names, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, they both have the same name in it, Sauvignon.
- 9:13Sauvignon.
- 9:13Yeah.
- 9:14Is that the grape?
- 9:16Yes.
- 9:16So the reason that the Sauvignon Blanc is a grape parent of the Cabernet Sauvignon.
- 9:27So genetically, the Cabernet Sauvignon is a mix of the Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
- 9:36Okay.
- 9:37So they created a new grape, right, which is the Cabernet Sauvignon.
- 9:42So although they're obviously very different wines, sometimes you can pick up bell pepper in both of the wines just because of that genetic heritage.
- 9:53Okay, so obviously genetics play a big part in wine.
- 9:59It does, yes.
- 10:00And how they...
- 10:00Did you know that?
- 10:01No, I didn't.
- 10:02I didn't either.
- 10:02I just thought you got a grape was a grape was a grape, a different, you know, a different flavor grape, but they obviously, they do things.
- 10:09But I have another question about grapes, and this might be quite silly, but I'm sure other people are wondering.
- 10:15Yeah, no silly question.
- 10:16A red wine versus a white wine, is it a red grape versus a green grape?
- 10:21That's a good question.
- 10:22That's a very good question.
- 10:23It depends on the wine and how the wine is made.
- 10:27So typically, it is a black grape for a red wine and a white grape for white wine.
- 10:35However, when we look at champagne, champagne is made typically from Pinot Noir grape, but they remove the peel.
- 10:46So you just have the inner.
- 10:48Oh, and again, I think that was an excellent question because I didn't know that.
- 10:52So in this, they wouldn't take the peel off.
- 10:55The peel would stay on the grape?
- 10:56In the red.
- 10:57In the red.
- 10:57Yes, that's right.
- 10:58But in champagne, the peel comes off.
- 11:01Right.
- 11:02Wow.
- 11:04Okay.
- 11:04And what about an ice wine, Karen?
- 11:06What would happen with the grape in that situation?
- 11:08I hope we do a segment on ice wine.
- 11:10Typically, with ice wine, and this is a science as well.
- 11:14Wine is a science and an art.
- 11:16With the ice wine, typically what they do is they freeze, they let the grapes freeze on the vine, but there's a certain level where it has to be harvested.
- 11:30It's gotta be picked at a certain time.
- 11:32Exactly.
- 11:32Not too cold, not too warm.
- 11:34Exactly, yeah.
- 11:35Wow.
- 11:35And that concentrates the juices within the grape to make it sweeter.
- 11:41Okay, that makes sense.
- 11:42It does.
- 11:42So this Sauvignon Blanc that we're drinking here, this is Oyster Bay from New Zealand.
- 11:49Right.
- 11:49And this is a wine enthusiast Best Buy, 2024.
- 11:55So if you're a white wine drinker, or even if you're not and you wanna try a white wine, head down to your favorite wine store and check this out.
- 12:03So how is this determined?
- 12:06Are there wine awards?
- 12:07Cause I think we should go to the wine awards.
- 12:10Yeah, we should.
- 12:10We should.
- 12:11We should do a podcast at the wine awards.
- 12:13A field trip.
- 12:14Yeah, a field trip.
- 12:15I love that. Somewhere warm hopefully.
- 12:16A wine field trip.
- 12:17Yeah.
- 12:20Yeah, and we'll go in February.
- 12:21Yeah.
- 12:23Yeah.
- 12:23This is fabulous.
- 12:24Isn't that great?
- 12:25So again, how much would this one?
- 12:27This one was roughly...
- 12:28Yeah, I think that one's about $20.
- 12:30$20.
- 12:30Again, very reasonable for a good bottle of wine.
- 12:33So all the wines we've had so far are between the $20 and $25 range.
- 12:37This is...
- 12:37And that's reasonable.
- 12:39That's fantastic.
- 12:40White wine, I think you mentioned it, best with...
- 12:44So this one is best with seafood.
- 12:47This is the one that I would suggest with a grilled cheese sandwich too.
- 12:50Yeah.
- 12:50I'm trying that.
- 12:51Yeah.
- 12:51Yeah.
- 12:53Jennifer was heading home right after this, and the white wine and the grilled cheese sandwich.
- 12:57Yeah.
- 12:58Do it on your panini maker, because then it's like, oh.
- 13:01That sounds so good.
- 13:03Now we know what to get her for Christmas.
- 13:04That's right.
- 13:04Next year, panini maker.
- 13:06Yeah.
- 13:06Yeah.
- 13:06Awesome.
- 13:08Yeah.
- 13:08This is very good.
- 13:09This is good.
- 13:09I'm glad you're enjoying it.
- 13:10It just, yeah, it has a very unique taste.
- 13:12Yeah.
- 13:13And it's kind of crisp.
- 13:14This one is nice and crisp.
- 13:16Wow.
- 13:16And like we talked, the Argentina region, you mentioned that New Zealand is also very well known for its wine.
- 13:22Right.
- 13:23Yes.
- 13:23Yeah.
- 13:24And the Sauvignon Blanc.
- 13:26Yeah.
- 13:26Specifically.
- 13:27Yeah.
- 13:27Well known for it.
- 13:28So I typically steer when we talked about, you know, you don't want to break outside your box sometimes of the wine.
- 13:34I will typically go to the New Zealand, Australian section for wine because generally they have great wine.
- 13:41Yeah.
- 13:41Yeah.
- 13:42And it is great to experiment.
- 13:44Try different wines, right?
- 13:46And you never know what you might be surprised what you're really going to enjoy.
- 13:50Yeah.
- 13:50Yeah.
- 13:51No, you're right.
- 13:51You don't know and then you try it and you like it and away you go.
- 13:54Right.
- 13:54And so this is amazing.
- 13:55Anything else you need to tell us today about these?
- 13:57Because they're incredible.
- 13:58Stay tuned for the next episode.
- 14:00So folks, listen, go to our website, www.coffeeinthepark.com, and we'll put these wines up on our website.
- 14:08And be sure to tell people about this segment.
- 14:11Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your coworkers, tell your enemies, because then you'll tell them and you'll share a glass of wine.
- 14:17You won't be enemies anymore.
- 14:18And if you don't have any friends, this is the perfect way to make them, to tell them about the Grape Expectations wine segment.
- 14:25Cam, let's have our listeners tell us, would you like to come to a wine segment where you would taste wine with Jennifer and Cam?
- 14:33That sounds fun.
- 14:34Okay.
- 14:38All right.
- 14:39So, this is great, fantastic.
- 14:43And yeah, stay tuned and appreciate everything.
- 14:47Karen, you're amazing.
- 14:48You're absolutely amazing.
- 14:49So much fun.
- 14:50So again, stay tuned and stay tuned for next month's segment, because I know it's just going to be as good as this month's.
- 14:56www.coffeeinthepark.com.
- 14:58Thanks everybody.
- 14:59Thanks everyone.
- 15:00Bye.
