- 0:00The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network. Hey everybody,
- 0:03it's comedian Brad Williams and I'll see you February fourth for my show at the
- 0:08Fox Theater right here in Tucson. But right now you're listening to tech Talk
- 0:14Enjoy the show. Welcome to another episode of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy
- 0:21Taylor, I'm Sean and uh let's see Matt and Justin are both out today.
- 0:27It's just just me and and good old Sean. How you doing show.
- 0:29It is the holidays, people are traveling, and as you can see
- 0:32if you're watching the video, it's just not my normal background or my excellent
- 0:36lighting. You it actually looks like you're in something from a horror film because
- 0:40you're in the basement of dungeon. I'm in a unfinished Michigan dirt basement.
- 0:46So yeah, so, now what is this basement used for? Is it
- 0:49like story? It's just it's just the basement of the house. It's it's
- 0:52got a concrete floor and it's just use for storage. Now, so did
- 0:55you have to take your computer the camera down there or does he have one
- 0:59down here? That's what this is. This is my MacBook and so I'm
- 1:02just using the FaceTime camera and this is they the Wise gaming headset that I
- 1:07brought with. Oh good, that's pretty good. Actually, Wise makes a
- 1:11gaming hits that we talked about this last year, and you were pretty happy
- 1:15with it. Yeah, it was worth it in my opinion. I think
- 1:18they were fifty five dollars and they had. The microphone is removable. It's
- 1:23a three point five millimeter headphone jack tip ringk rings sleeve, so it does
- 1:27mike and it. Yeah, so just all that stuff. So it's removable,
- 1:30so you can use it just as headphones if you wanted to. Their
- 1:33bluetooth comes with the little USB dongle that I've got plugged in, and it
- 1:38works fine. It sounds good, so I'm happy with it. The only
- 1:40the only thing I really didn't like about it it doesn't have this feature which
- 1:45my Steel Series Octa seven's have, is the two channels of return audio from
- 1:49the computer. It's got two audio channels, so I can split game and
- 1:53chat. If I'm chatting a discord and I'm playing a game, I can
- 1:57just reach up, flip the knob down and kill all my game sounds,
- 2:00but still hear all my chat sounds or flip it up and hear just the
- 2:04game sounds and no chat sounds. But it'll generally do a mix, right,
- 2:07I mean, why you're it's however, you've got it set, so
- 2:09if it's in the middle, split fifty to fifty. But then you can
- 2:13finde tune it. Say I'm watching a movie but still chatting with my friends,
- 2:15want to hear what they have. I can turn them down, put
- 2:19the movie up, or turn the movie down put them up, just by
- 2:21adjusting it down my headset. This is just single channel, so it's everything
- 2:23from the computer that's being output to the headset into the headset. So I
- 2:29like that feature on the Steel Series. But those were also one hundred and
- 2:31sixty bucks. These are fifty five dollars, so I can't complain too much,
- 2:36and they don't sound it doesn't sound too bad, and it's USBC chargeable.
- 2:39The battery life is good, the FOLLM is nice and comfortable. They
- 2:43fit over completely over my ears, so I've been very happy with them,
- 2:46and I bought them just over a year ago. I think I think I've
- 2:49looked at Logitech, which I like. I like theirs. I like Steel
- 2:53Series. Steel Series has been kind of when it comes to gaming headsets,
- 2:57they've kind of been at the forefront, but the things you're also going to
- 3:00pay money for those, Yeah, I would say you have you have Steel
- 3:02Series, hyper X, Turtle Beach. Those are kind of the three top
- 3:07that I come to in my mind. Mob Tech is in there also.
- 3:08You know, it's c retly crazy. Sean when when when you talk about
- 3:13sound, like say you go back ten years ago and you talked about computer
- 3:16sound, you know, the whether it be headphones or microphones. What is
- 3:23one company that you always thought of Soundblester, Yeah, you always thought of
- 3:27creative labs, and it just seems like, you know now when you think
- 3:30about it. I mean, I know creative labs it's got they've got to
- 3:32have headsets. I know that they have, you know, all kinds of
- 3:36devices for you know, sound cards. The sound on most motherboards is going
- 3:40to be fine from most people, and then if you're gaming, you're gonna
- 3:45be wearing you know, a headset anyways, so it's it's going to be
- 3:49handled differently. Yeah, creative cs are creative creative labs. They have all
- 3:53sorts of stuff. They've got wire z eerbuzz, they've got internal cards,
- 3:57they've got used the audio cards, speaker, soundbars, what cams, audio
- 4:00adapters, all sorts of stuff. I like their external cards too, those
- 4:03were pretty good too, you know if you're doing Yeah, but like but
- 4:06when you were you know, back before bluetooth and wireless were a thing,
- 4:11right, everybody just had a sound Blaster card in their computer and we're running
- 4:18a wired headphone to the to the audio card. Yeah, Exact sound Blaster
- 4:23was great. I mean they always make great products, and I'm sure they
- 4:26do, but it's like they don't push as much. You like, if
- 4:30you if you go into the retail store shelves that you know best buy,
- 4:33you it might be hard pressed to find sound Blaster there. Yeah, but
- 4:38I think you got the people that know sound Blaster want to buy sound Blaster,
- 4:42right, So those people are going to search it out. They're not
- 4:44going to go to the brick and mortar stores to get it there or if
- 4:46some price still sell it. But those people are going to search it out
- 4:49because they know they're going to get good quality. Yeah. They still make
- 4:53a great speakers too as well. Speaking of that, and I got it
- 4:58first off, did you have a great holid? Was it nice? Yeah,
- 5:00it's been nice. The university has been closed, so I've been off
- 5:03for a handful of days and it's been nice, just relaxing. And you
- 5:09know, it's Max's first reel, like he understands what's going on kind of
- 5:14Christmas, so having him help open gifts, help me, you know,
- 5:16it's been has been kind of fun. And you know, it's always fun
- 5:20as an adult buying for other adults, but sometimes it's hard. I buy
- 5:25what I want for myself, so it leaves doesn't leave many options for other
- 5:28people when they buy for me. But I held back and I didn't make
- 5:31a whole lot of purchases, so I got what I wanted, at least
- 5:35what was on my list. I didn't get everything that I wanted because I
- 5:39put some expensive things on there just to see who would buy nobody else.
- 5:44But yeah, I got a couple of cool things. We talked about it,
- 5:46you know, we talked about our wish list a couple weeks ago on
- 5:47the show, and out of that wish list, I got the the I
- 5:51haven't used. The ex's still upstairs because we just opened stuff this morning,
- 5:55because we did our family Christmas with Kale's family this morning, and I got
- 6:00the wireless USBC rechargeable PC duster. Oh you did get that. Oh that's
- 6:06awesome. So it's got a little brush on it and you can turn up,
- 6:10turn down the pressure so stuff. So I can use it to clean
- 6:14my keyboard or you know, dust my computer or whatever. So, now
- 6:15can you do the outside. I don't know if your case is acrylic or
- 6:19do you have like the fan that big, you know, huge fan on
- 6:23the side of your case, which if you don't do anything with it,
- 6:26over time, you start to see the dust accumulate on the outside of that.
- 6:30Yeah, I could see that one, and it's got it on the
- 6:31side of mind. So I've got a full flat side with just a one
- 6:34hundred and twenty milimeter fan on the side of mine, and it's got an
- 6:36led on it so it always lights up so I can always see how dusty
- 6:40it's I clean that one pretty regularly. I'm pretty pretty meticulous about keeping my
- 6:44PC clean up. I probably open it up and dust it once a month
- 6:47at least. Oh wow, for me, it's been like a year.
- 6:51No. No, I open mine up and get in there and blow it
- 6:57out, just with a can of edge get some dust out because I'm in
- 7:00the basement, you know, and I don't want any weird bugs to get
- 7:01into the reading. Yeah. Do you have pets? No, we no
- 7:04pets, so that probably helps. Yeah, I don't know if you have
- 7:06pets like Justina's cats, at least you used to have cats. I don't
- 7:11know if people have dogs. You'd be surprised at how much of that that
- 7:15fur. You know, you could be like the cleanest person too, but
- 7:19how much of that fur gets sucked into the computer and we'll just sit there
- 7:24and float around inside the computer? Is that? I mean, that's bad
- 7:27for a computer, isn't it. Well, that type of stuff just gets
- 7:30kicked on and then it just it retains heat. So you run into it
- 7:34just brings the f If you leave it, you get dust caked on and
- 7:38stuff just brings the heat of your the total temperature. This vacuum that you
- 7:43I wanted to mention a brand because you mentioned it a couple of weeks ago.
- 7:46That was on your wish list. You had seen this and you wanted
- 7:48to get it, but we didn't get a manufacturer. The at in Genus
- 7:54so AT E n G e U S all right, compressed electric cordless brushless
- 8:00fan. Right, how much this thy go for it? Forty seven for
- 8:03this one. I don't I don't know which brand I got. I didn't
- 8:05see the brand name on it when I opened it, but I just know
- 8:07it's what it's the duster, right, I just don't know what it is
- 8:11now in doing this to your computer, right, so you open it?
- 8:15Number one, This is important because it will you know, it takes away
- 8:18some of the heat that can build up in your system. If you're getting
- 8:20rid of all that dust. It's just this is not a good environment for
- 8:24the computer. Just just keep you know. More and more often than that,
- 8:28most users aren't opening up their computers to dust them out because not all
- 8:31computers are made to be opened properly or easily. So your your average users
- 8:35not opening up their computer. But if you've got an all in one,
- 8:39yeah, if you've got an all on one or you know, you're not
- 8:41doing that, but you can still keep the vents clean and stuff like that.
- 8:45You know, if you need to get it clean, take it to
- 8:46a take it to a store, have somebody can open it up. Have
- 8:48you ever had this happen to you, Sean, Since we're talking about dust
- 8:52and everything, you ever had like a USB drive Suddenly like you try to
- 8:56plug it in, it's like it's not like making a connection, and it's
- 9:00like even hard to push in this it's mostly it's phones phones. You ever
- 9:05pulled out a big lit you know, dust bunny from your the phone socket
- 9:09for your USB cord because it didn't start charging. Yes, that's exactly what
- 9:15it is. So you go to plug it in, it's like, oh,
- 9:16my phone was charging my phone stakes cables, bads, you buy a
- 9:20cable, it doesn't work. No, the batteries and my phone's screwed up.
- 9:22Yeah, and you're look in there and you just use a little toothpick
- 9:26or something you pull out a huge dust bunny and then it clicks right in
- 9:28and you're ready off to the races. And the reason for that is because
- 9:31you put it maybe in your purse, you put it in your pocket and
- 9:33that has lint and that will actually just seat nicely inside the USB drive or
- 9:39or Yeah, and then you're plugging in and it's not making the connection and
- 9:43you have no idea why. I did have an issue though this past week
- 9:46and it's driving me nuts. So I have a it is a king?
- 9:52Is it a king note. It's a sand disc sixty four gigabyte drive.
- 9:56I've had for about maybe a year and a half. And and the other
- 10:00day I, you know, I I move a lot of files that I
- 10:03use for prepping and you know, data and stories that I need and whatnot.
- 10:09And the other day I went to save a file to it and it
- 10:11said this is right protected. Well that's kind of strange. I don't think
- 10:16there's a right protection notch on this flash drive. So I saved it locally,
- 10:22and then I went to the flash drive, took it out, and
- 10:24I'm looking at it. I'm moving flas back and forth, and plug it
- 10:28back in and it shows the show's files. Try to move a file to
- 10:33it, right protect it. I thought, well, that's kind of strange.
- 10:37I tried to delete a file that was on that drive. Can't do
- 10:39it right protect it. So I'm like, and it is isy, going,
- 10:43what the heck is going on here with this flash drive? It had
- 10:48Luckily it hasn't you know, deleted in the data from it. So I
- 10:52copied all the data off of it onto another folder that I created on a
- 10:56local drive, and then I I tried to find my Acronus Disc director but
- 11:03it turns out I had a demo on that one, so I cann't try
- 11:07and partition. So I used I tried Partition Manager. I tried, you
- 11:11know, the tools that are a part of Windows can't even partition, it
- 11:15can't format, it can't do anything with it. And so I got in
- 11:20touch with SanDisk tech support. And Sandus is really good. I love their
- 11:24products. But I got the tech support and finally, you know, the
- 11:26guy said, well, yeah, it's your drives defective. What you need
- 11:31to do is send it in to us and with a receipt, and he
- 11:35sent me paperwork, and I'm thinking, I'm not going to go through all
- 11:37of this for an eight dollar drive. So here's the eight or nine dollars
- 11:41for a sixty four gigabyte or you know drive. And I just thought,
- 11:45And then you go to you can't delete anything off the drive, so you're
- 11:48sending any documents that you have on the drive to them. So I'm thinking,
- 11:52I'm going to find a tool that is a partition manager tool that maybe
- 11:58is better than the Windows you know, the Windows tool that you get with
- 12:01Windows ten or eleven, and see if I could do it that way.
- 12:07So I know that there's you know, uh, you know a Chronics didn't
- 12:09even make I guess disc director anymore. But I'm sure that there's some tools
- 12:15out there for doing this kind of thing where you could, you know,
- 12:18partition to drive and maybe even have better better ability to go ahead and do
- 12:22that. Have you heard of anything like that? The only one that I've
- 12:26really ever had to use I use. I usually just mostly use disc Manager
- 12:31for disc Utility for Mac or disc Manager for Windows because you can just do
- 12:35it all via command line or terminal. It's pretty easy if you know what
- 12:39you're doing, or you can just find a guide online. But the one
- 12:41that I found that I've used previously in the past and a pinch was Partition
- 12:46Wizard. Oh yeah, I have heard of that. Boy that's going back
- 12:50though, so but that's a free one. I'm sure there's other tools out
- 12:52there, and if you're looking for this kind of stuff, I'm gonna I'm
- 12:56gonna shout out a subar. Disc recard Data is a subreddit that I'm a
- 13:01part of, and they have a lot of great tools that are on their
- 13:05sidebar. So if you just want to quickly or if you have a drive
- 13:09that you're trying to get some stuff up. Just go check that out because
- 13:11they've got a huge list of resources on there. Justin had sent us a
- 13:15picture this week. I don't know if you saw that called a spiderboard,
- 13:18and I didn't understand. I've never seen a spiderboard before. But they took
- 13:22a USB flash drive or our hard drive basically that was or an SSD,
- 13:28and they took it apart and they were able to actually using the spiderboard,
- 13:33wire it so that it could work again, they could get data off of
- 13:37it. Yeah, it's the spiderboard's unique because it's got these really fine tippins
- 13:43that you can drop on a circuit board and put them in the right order,
- 13:46so you could just basically have your wires being the spiderboard work as the
- 13:52cables for the USB drive by just powering the USB because they had the power
- 13:56for the USB. Saw those two on there, Yeah, and they had
- 13:58everything else connected via the spiderboard and at worked. But like that's some crazy
- 14:03level physical level hacking, That's what I was thinking. I mean, that's
- 14:07like if if you have state secrets or nuclear secrets on there and you need
- 14:11them offering, you're not doing that just for pictures. Of your grandma.
- 14:13Right, But you see this is the whole thing too. This actually shows
- 14:16you why you don't want to take a USB drive that suddenly stopped working.
- 14:20That's eight dollars. Check it in the trash, because think about it,
- 14:26stuff is going to be recoverable. I am able to recover stuff. I
- 14:30have software, great software that I can recover stuff after it's been formatted and
- 14:35partitioned. So I mean that's that stuff is out there. So if you
- 14:39have this thing, you just think, oh, this drive is not working
- 14:41anymore. Maybe the USB tip broke off, or you broke it off purposely.
- 14:46Stuff could still possibly be recovered. Oh yeah, it's physical security,
- 14:52is it's you know, it's not usually the network's prop not usually the it
- 14:58or the network problem that causes hacks. It's a human element. It's the
- 15:05physical security of the human between the network. All it takes is for you'd
- 15:11be just to be social engineered to get a critical piece of information, to
- 15:15get your password. You take a thumb drive you found out on the street,
- 15:18You plug it into your computer, you know it. I think we
- 15:22talked about this once a year at least, if not out of six months.
- 15:24Is like when you're traveling, when you're going to places, hotels,
- 15:31everywhere now has USB plugged, newspeaports for plugging in your phones, charging your
- 15:35computers. Yeah, yeah, yeada. If you latch defcon or dream hack
- 15:43or any of those places that are the like the havens for hacker conventions and
- 15:46stuff, they will they will tell you that if you plug in your USB
- 15:52device, your computer, your phone into a public USB port, likely your
- 15:56data is getting stripped. Isn't that amazing? Yeah? Or if if somebody
- 16:00hands you, hey, I need to borrow a phone charger. I see
- 16:03you have an iPhone. Can I borrow your phone charger? Well, here's
- 16:06this special phone charger that as soon as you plug it in, it copies
- 16:07all your data off your phone and wireless. He transmits it to me,
- 16:11like it's crazy that the level of technology that people can think. So don't
- 16:15plug in USB cables you don't know. Don't plug in USB sticks you don't
- 16:18know. When you're traveling at the airport, use a power brick or use
- 16:25a chargeable battery. Don't plug him into your hotels like you know, Like,
- 16:30Hey, the nightstand I've got there's two USB's on the nightstand. Great,
- 16:33I got to charge my watch, I gotta charge my phone. Boom
- 16:36boom, there's my data gone. You never know. Yeah, take a
- 16:38power brick with you. That's your own, your own cable. If you're
- 16:41going to be staying in a hotel that you can you can actually control.
- 16:45Rather that's being like crazy level, like paranoid about stuff. But you never
- 16:49know, right, You never know who's who's hot wired a USB port or
- 16:55created a fake USB port just to see who plugs in. You know,
- 16:59when we spoke with Kim Crawley about you know, the difference between a hacker
- 17:03and a cyber criminal, you know, it's there's kind of a gray line
- 17:07there. I mean, I think she explained it pretty good in the book.
- 17:10Hacker has been around for many years. They find ways to make things
- 17:11better, and in some cases it's ways to make security better. We found
- 17:15out about some of these things because people were hacked, hacking or using it
- 17:21and saying, wait a minute, you don't want to do this, because
- 17:22this could happen to you if you plugged into say a lamp, you know
- 17:27socket with the USB who knows who put it in there? Yeah, And
- 17:32it's just like with the world of the internet, and things. Right,
- 17:34there are billions and billions of devices connected to the Internet, billions billions of
- 17:40devices connected to the Internet, and Carl, Yeah, it's just crazy how
- 17:48connected the world is. And there are resources and I'm not going to bring
- 17:51them up here Beacon, but you can find it was quite googling or using
- 17:53tour on the dark Web to find websites that will scour the Internet and provides
- 17:59you links to unprotected webcams, unprotected devices, unprotected everything. You can just
- 18:06browse them, mind you at your leisure. Yeah, because they're open and
- 18:10it's not anybody's fault except for the user who either didn't protect it properly,
- 18:14didn't change the admin password, didn't change the IP address or whatever, didn't
- 18:18protect themselves, and it's just the level of availability for some of this stuff
- 18:23is crazy. So it's like just a little bit of know how and some
- 18:27security, like you can protect yourself pretty pretty quickly. But that's gonna bring
- 18:33me around to the if you have any Ubiquity unified devices, right, Ubiquity
- 18:38had a quite quite a large I don't think they want to call it a
- 18:42hack, but a misconfiguration. Uh oh that allowed say you and I both
- 18:48had unified devices, right, and you logged in, you might have seen
- 18:52my devices. Wait, so I log into my device and I'm gonna suddenly
- 18:56see you it's it's there's their web portal, right, and it's there.
- 19:03So I would log in and my to unify portal, and then all of
- 19:10a sudden, I'm seeing up to eighty devices that aren't mine that I could
- 19:15get into, configure, update, turn off, restart, whatever. But
- 19:19then as soon as you refresh your browser it had it had something to do
- 19:22with caching or something within uh the user credentials, but Ubiquity was able to
- 19:29fix it, so it The company admitted that they had a misconfiguration with its
- 19:33cloud infrastructure which allowed some of its customers to watch footage from strangers security cameras.
- 19:38Oh boy, so now this this may not sound too unfamiliar because Wise
- 19:45had the same problem. Was there series one? Right? No? No,
- 19:48no, this was their web portal? So why is the whyse web
- 19:52portal? You can go to whys dot com slash like it's live and you
- 19:56can view all of your cameras on the web. So if I logged in,
- 20:03I might have seen your cameras. If you logged in, you might
- 20:04have seen my cameras just for a brief second, but they were able to
- 20:07identify that only so many people like thirty users or or whatever were able to
- 20:11experience this problem. But then they were able to fix it. But it
- 20:15had to be something along the same lines of credential caching or webcasing for the
- 20:19portal. So it's interesting that this issue came up but with a much larger
- 20:25worldwide security firm. Yeah, Ubiquity is pretty big. I don't Broadway,
- 20:29who's you know on the show once in a while he used his ubiquity and
- 20:33they make all kinds of products. But again, this is that's not good
- 20:37because again it makes you question the security of the device that you're using or
- 20:42the portal. Yeah, so Ubiquity says twelve hundred and sixteen accounts were affected,
- 20:51so only out of millions of customers, only this many, you know,
- 20:53a drop in the bucket were affected. But yeah, but if you're
- 20:56that one customer, right, But it's like, really, was it just
- 21:00I mean, it's it's that kind of like transparency. Really was it just
- 21:04that many accounts? Or like I feel like an issue like that would be
- 21:10a little bit more widespread, But I'm not a security researcher, so I
- 21:12don't know, but I don't want our listeners, you know that are listening
- 21:17maybe have different varied levels of expertise when it comes to your devices securing them.
- 21:22You may have had, you know, your son or somebody you know
- 21:25come over and hook up your router to your home because you wanted Wi Fi,
- 21:27you wanted to have a doorbell cam, you know, and maybe you're
- 21:33afraid of touching that. I don't you to be afraid of what is out
- 21:37there, but you should always know some of this stuff that's going on with
- 21:40Maybe you don't have a Ubiquity account, but you may have an Infinity account.
- 21:45And Exfinity also suffered a major breach just recently and they're you know,
- 21:51doing the credit protection and the whole bit. And in that breach, you
- 21:55had partials on socials, you had addresses, you had, you had email
- 22:00accounts, you had I believe hashed passwords. You had all of this stuff
- 22:06that went out. And the problem is if somebody wants to target you in
- 22:10particular, and they're able to get this hash of information and buy it on
- 22:15the dark web, uh and have this the thing is that you have to
- 22:18realize that you're going to get You're going to get an increase in you know,
- 22:23the spam or the email. You know, and some of the email
- 22:26is going to look really good because they can see what your emails. So
- 22:30who's who's your who's your email coming from? Who do you have account with?
- 22:34Oh, you gotta account with Capital One Bank, or you've got to
- 22:37get account with the American Express. Oh, because they've got that. They
- 22:40might even see the last four year of a credit card and you might get
- 22:45that. So here on the Washington Post, the article says that the company
- 22:49concluded that the information included user names, hashed passwords, and for some customers,
- 22:56the last four digits of their social account security question answers for it's in
- 23:00contact information. So you can do a lot with that information to social engineer
- 23:04somebody. Yeah, And what that means is you focus on that person and
- 23:07you use other methods to try and get more information to be able to do
- 23:11a complete hack or again you know. Yeah, I mean with that information,
- 23:15you could call Exfinity, get in say hey, I'm sean to weird.
- 23:22Hell, yeah, what's the last for digital social here? It is?
- 23:23Okay? Cool? What do you want to do well, I want
- 23:26to change my count plan, I want to change my password, and I
- 23:27want to do all this. They don't know that they're not really talking to
- 23:30me right exactly with that information. It's just that's the level where we're at,
- 23:36right. It's like with the Internet of Things and just being so connected.
- 23:40It's this is just the reality of the world. It's this is going
- 23:44to continue to happen and it's going to become more sophisticated. Well, do
- 23:47you think people are more safe? And we all everybody on the show here
- 23:52uses a password manager, do you feel that we're safer when we do that
- 23:57a little bit? It's managing it so that Google's not storing my data.
- 24:03It's not, you know, I'm not. I'm keeping it local to my
- 24:07machine versus storing it on Google Drive or within a Chrome browser, because I
- 24:11don't save my passwords within Chrome anymore, just because the way the way our
- 24:18work handles management, if you stay logged in, other people can see your
- 24:22passwords and stuff. So I've been either using incognito Windows or just using a
- 24:30different browser or whatever. But I don't store anything within Chrome anymore. So
- 24:34I don't save my passwords in Chrome. I don't you know, so I'm
- 24:37always typing in my passwords or I'm using the links from one pass Well it's
- 24:42a little safer, but it's not the end all. It's just if you
- 24:47know, if there's a if there's an issue that like my browser gets hijacked
- 24:51or something, they're not going to find anything within Chrome, which they would
- 24:55have to dig deeper or get access to my machine or whatever. But you
- 24:59know, it's like you have people that are saying, oh, my data
- 25:02is already have there, so why does it matter? Right, Well,
- 25:04because it's a it's a if it doesn't. If you don't care, there's
- 25:08not going to be any regulation changes to make it better in the future.
- 25:12All right, here's a question for you, Sean. Tell me what happens
- 25:15when you do this. And I think a lot of it's gone through that
- 25:18you're on the web, you type in a web address, but you mistype
- 25:22a couple of letters close but no cigar, And you go to a website
- 25:27that looks real blank and plain, and all of a sudden you start getting
- 25:32the pop ups, and the pop ups are telling you that your system has
- 25:36been you know, frozen for this and that and this and that what's the
- 25:41safest thing to do. You can't find a way to shut it down?
- 25:45Hold kill your computer with the power bunch, hold it down. Just hold
- 25:48it and turn it off. Yep, yeah, just turn it off.
- 25:51If you feel like your machine has been compromised, yank out the network cable
- 25:56or turn it off if you're you're hardwired, like, just get it off
- 25:59the internet. When yank out means you know, unplug it, I mean,
- 26:03yeah, depends on how bad do you think it's going to be.
- 26:07Yes, No, you're just shutting off your computer and then trying to isolate
- 26:11it from the network. You still turn your computer out and run diagnostics and
- 26:15run antivirus or run a scan or whatever your however you want to do it.
- 26:19But just if you feel like your machine has been compromised, don't turn
- 26:25it back on and try and connect to the internet. Yeah, exactly.
- 26:27Don't connect it to your home Wi Fi because if your security settings on your
- 26:32computer allow your data to be shared across your home network your private network,
- 26:38then all of a sudden, your sister's computer could be compromised, or your
- 26:42dad's computer, or your phone or you know who knows how what the level
- 26:47of attack was but it's just isolating it, taking it to a repair center
- 26:52somebody you know that maybe knows a little bit more about computers, and just
- 26:56trying to diagnose the problem without being connected the internet run a network. Yeah.
- 27:00The other thing too is if if you're trying to shut down, you
- 27:03may not be able to shut down. I've seen some of these uh uh,
- 27:06these these are the tacks that happened this way. And honestly, for
- 27:11people who don't know, you can just hold the power button until your computer
- 27:14shuts off and then unplug that get that cable unplugged definitely, and before you
- 27:18and let walk away for a little bit. It's really that's you know,
- 27:22some people will tend to just want to log back on and keep the network
- 27:26cable plugged in, thinking that's gonna fix it, and that may not fix
- 27:29it. We got to take a quick break. We come back. We've
- 27:30got more stuff to talk about. I wanted an Apple Watch for Christmas,
- 27:36and it looks like I may not be able to get one because well they've
- 27:40been told they can't sell them in the US. So we'll tell you more
- 27:41about that coming up. I'm Andy Taylor. I'm shot the word find us
- 27:45at the web at tech talk radio dot com and now back to tech talk
- 27:49Radio. So if you were hoping for an Apple Watch for Christmas, ah,
- 27:55yes that would be me. It wasn't gonna be the Series nine or
- 27:57the Ultra two. Now these are these are the latest in technology for Apple
- 28:03Watch. I mean there's other Apple Watch. These were released earlier last like
- 28:07I think in September. Maybe they've been on sale for a while, but
- 28:12as of December twenty sixth, twenty twenty three, import and US sales of
- 28:18some Apple watches were officially banned because there is a lawsuit saying that my Simo
- 28:25right, it's a US tech company, and the US International Trade Comission ruled
- 28:30in October that Apple had infringed on their patent and this was for blood oxygen,
- 28:34right, for reading the blood oxygen level. Yeah, so it is.
- 28:41It is for their my smoll. The band comes amid a legal speed
- 28:47with my Simo over the blood oxygen technology that they have in their watches.
- 28:51Oh and my SMO claims that Apple took employees still trade secrets and infringed on
- 28:56patents related to its pulse oxymetry technology. And you know that's the thing about
- 29:00you know, Apple watches too. They're great. I mean they're great because
- 29:04they do a lot of things. They're some cool apps. But the other
- 29:07thing that people have been saying that they really like about them is the fact
- 29:11that can kind of monitor your health. They can monitor your your heartbeat.
- 29:15If you maybe you have tachycardia or you know, a FIB, it can
- 29:19actually monitor how your heart is doing, and it will alert you when you're
- 29:22either in tech or a a FIB as well. So I have the Series
- 29:26eight so I got it for my birthday eight this year. Okay, we
- 29:30got it for me for birthday year. I had the Series three before that,
- 29:33right, and it has some of that technology, and it's kind of
- 29:37cool because they can just track it'll tell you like, hey, your blood
- 29:40broke, your heart rates that I probably high today. It's like cool,
- 29:44I can track my anxiety throughout the day because he tells me who my heart
- 29:47rate is. Right. But it doesn't have this newer technology like the nine
- 29:52or the Ultra two. So, but it's only not available in the US
- 29:57because those patents are apparently or only if impacted the US. So they're still
- 30:02available outside of the US in Italy and a couple other places. That this
- 30:07article says. There's the other cadactil to that too, is that they are
- 30:11not available in Apple store. They got pulled from Apple stores. However,
- 30:15Best Buy, Target, Walmart, anywhere else that they sell the Apple watch
- 30:22products may have them and they are still able to sell them. Correct.
- 30:27Yeah, I don't exactly know what exactly, but no more are going to
- 30:33come in. You're not going to like what they could sell what they have,
- 30:36and then that will be it. Yeah. So, I mean,
- 30:40and it's not a small amount of money that Apple brings in. According to
- 30:44this Forbes article I'm scrobbing through is in the third quarter of twenty twenty three,
- 30:48Apple Wearables, home and accessories brought an eight point two eight billion dollars
- 30:52for Apple billion dollars wow billion. Wow. So it's not a small amount.
- 30:59If you were looking, you know, it's not a small amount.
- 31:00I mean, do you think they did it on the twenty six to wait
- 31:04so people could buy them for Christmas? Of course they did? Yeah,
- 31:07yeah, right, of course. So they just didn't want to absolutely cause
- 31:11chaos with Apple watches and returns and all this crazy stuff. So yeah,
- 31:15it's just it's just the newer one. So anything without the technology right,
- 31:18without that Mysomo patent, that technology aren't affected. So but it's crazy for
- 31:23Mymo, this this tech company to take on Apple and actually get the US
- 31:30to ban imports and sales of these watches. I know Apple has gone to
- 31:33the Biden administration and actually said can you step in? And they said no,
- 31:37they're they're not going to step in on this, and they've been basically
- 31:41banned from doing this. So we'll y So we'll see, we'll see all
- 31:44that pans out. But this is as of the recording of the show,
- 31:47which is on the twenty sixth. That happened today, Well, we'll recording
- 31:49the show. It happened this morning, so that ban went to effect the
- 31:53day we recorded the show. So I'm I'm wondering though, speaking about Apple
- 31:57wearables. You know, I want the Apple Watch for Christmas. I didn't
- 32:01get it, But I've been thinking about the Apple and I always call them
- 32:07wrong. I call them ear pods. Is that that basically or is it
- 32:13air pods? Wait? Wait, what do you call them? Right?
- 32:15They're called the Apple air pods and they have the non pro version and the
- 32:20pro version and I think they're on series two of the pro versions, right,
- 32:23and the difference in price. So the pro version is one ninety nine
- 32:27is what I saw that I did see another version for, but another pro
- 32:30for two forty nine, so that's probably about the regular retail price. So
- 32:36the Yeah, So the benefit of the pro version is it comes includes with
- 32:39it includes uh, noise canceling. Okay, So I got these as an
- 32:45early Christmas present this year for me, right, and because I like wearing
- 32:50my earbuds at work when I'm going in and out working with equipment, I
- 32:52give a hands free or I'm talking to on the phone troubleshooting, and they're
- 32:57awesome, really all right, battery life is incredible, the sound quality is
- 33:01incredible. The noise canceling is phenomenal. If you have a relatively quiet environment
- 33:12with some white noises stuff, it just kills all that white noise. It's
- 33:15fantastic. So I keep them in almost all day just to kill out some
- 33:20of that white noise. But the battery, you know, it's usually a
- 33:23day's worth of working I can get out of before I drop back in the
- 33:27case and charge them again. Now, the stem, the stem on the
- 33:30pro and if you've ever seen an air an air pod, you'll see it
- 33:37has like the white piece that goes into the ear canal and then you've got
- 33:40this little stem that comes out. It seems like the stem on the pro
- 33:44version is a little shorter. It is a little shorter, and it's a
- 33:47little more rounder just because of the technology difference between the non pros and the
- 33:52pros. Right, they have to have the space for the noise canceling,
- 33:54the active noise canceling, the drivers, and there's differences, but they're different
- 34:00in size and shape. But you know, it's you're paying for what you
- 34:02get, right. If you're not buying the pro version, you're not getting
- 34:05some of the noise canceling functions. But I've been very happy with the with
- 34:10the AirPods. Now, all right, what about comfort? Because so I
- 34:14have and I like them. I got skull Candy and I've got Jabra the
- 34:20jobbras I've always loved. I've used those in TV, you know, when
- 34:23we were doing a remote I would call in on the phone and we would
- 34:28do the video back and forth. But I like those, but they would
- 34:31tend to fall out once in a while. Uh is so with the AirPod
- 34:37pros, I got four different sizes of removable silicone cups you can put on.
- 34:43They come with it, Yes, oh cool, all right, but
- 34:45mine did. I mean, I'm sure I got just bought them from Apple,
- 34:50so I'm sure they came with it. So I had to go through
- 34:52and went, Nope, these are too small. It fell out too easy.
- 34:54Nope, these are too big. They didn't fit. They you could
- 34:58definitely feel, and then like I went with like one step down from the
- 35:01largest size and then they hit fine. Now I'm not sure if I just
- 35:07have weird ears, but like, if I'm going around, I'll notice up
- 35:12it's gonna slip out, and then it falls out of my ear and I
- 35:14have to try and catch it awkwardly. Right, it's like right, So
- 35:15they don't always fit in my ears super well, but for the most part
- 35:19they stay in ninety percent of the time of worrying them. Maybe that one
- 35:22ten percent where I turned my head too funny, or I've been talking a
- 35:25bunch and moving my jaw and they work themselves out and you can usually feel
- 35:29that. But I've not had an issue with them fitting or fitting comfortably.
- 35:34Right, And what about in phone calls, You're having a phone conversation with
- 35:38somebody, has anybody ever said I can't hear you, or you know,
- 35:43is it pretty cool? You know, it's pretty clear. It even it's
- 35:47like in our equipment room at work, when we're in with all the coolers
- 35:51and the fans blowing and stuff. It does a good job of canceling incoming
- 35:53noise also not just outgoing. They can hear me more clear, and I
- 35:59can hear them more clearly when I'm in a louder environment. But what I
- 36:01like about it is that if I sit on my computer and I start doing
- 36:07something on my computer, it recognizes them on my computer and we'll send the
- 36:08audio to me your buds. Oh really, that's kind of cool. I
- 36:13pick up my phone or walk away from my computer and take a phone call
- 36:15boo boo, boom and moves and moves and right to my AirPods. Nice.
- 36:19So seamless transition between the MacBook and an AirPod, you know, my
- 36:22phone, an iPad. You can do that all seamlessly just by quickly changing
- 36:27your audio settings by going, oh, I need to go to my AirPods
- 36:29and it'll sync up to multiple devices. Well, that's all through, that's
- 36:31all through iCloud. One of the other things I did like about those shun
- 36:36is, so I got and I don't know if you've got one. This
- 36:38was on your wish list, the Bellcan three and one. So it's a
- 36:44charging stand where you can mag safe charge your your iPhone, mag safe charge
- 36:50your your actual watch and if you've got to, you know, an eye
- 36:55watch, and then you can actually mag safe the carrying case for your your
- 37:00buds, which is pretty cool. All in one on that from that Belcan
- 37:04device. Yeah, that was on my list of things that I wanted,
- 37:12and it was an all in one stand where you drop your eye you just
- 37:15set your phone, your phone on it, charge your phone, you set
- 37:16your airpod's case on it. It charges, and you put your watch on
- 37:20it and charges, and then if you needed to, you could charge another
- 37:23USB device on it as well. But so right now, I just have
- 37:27a Belkan single charger for my phone. I drop it on and I just
- 37:30plugged my the air podcase in USBC and it charges just fine. Right,
- 37:34So you didn't get it for Christmas? No, I did not get it
- 37:37for Christmas. Sorry about that. All right, We're gonna take another quick
- 37:40break. We'll come back with more of tech Talk Radio. There's more tech
- 37:44to talk about. Uh. If you ever have a question for us,
- 37:45you can drop us an email. Tech Guys at tech talk radio dot com.
- 37:50I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Seanda Weird. Find us on x tech talk
- 37:52Radio. Now back to tech talk Radio. All right, there's a Colin
- 37:55Machria foseline? Is it anyway you're listening to tech talk Radio. I don't
- 38:00know how it works. It's all magical stuff for me. Saw a really
- 38:06cool article this week, Jean, about something that some of our older listeners
- 38:09may go through. And you know, we talked earlier about headphones. Some
- 38:14great headphones that are out there, whether it be hyper x, Steel series,
- 38:17you know, you've got the Wise Ones, Logitech. But it comes
- 38:22to watching television and being able to hear it because some of the TVs that
- 38:29there are TVs that come out in the market that may have a pretty good
- 38:31screen size, you have, the audio quality on them is not that great
- 38:37and sometimes it's hard. I've had people tell me it's hard to hear their
- 38:39TV and I'll say what kind of TV? They? Oh, fifty inch
- 38:43you know, Sony TV, And I'll think, how could you not hear
- 38:46that? But there are some cases where the TV sound is not that great
- 38:51Cnet put together a really good article and I wanted to just give them props
- 38:54for that about how to use these fixes to actually make dialogue more audible on
- 39:00your TV because it happens now. Some people have asked me when it comes
- 39:05to TV audio, if they want to get it, you know, get
- 39:07better sound be able to understand it, should they go out and get themselves
- 39:12the soundbar? And you know, soundbars are great, but it's like being
- 39:15in a movie theater. If your problem is hearing the dialogue. What you're
- 39:21getting with the soundbar is more an amplification of the music, the sound effects.
- 39:25You know, all of that combined, it still may not be sharp
- 39:30enough for you to get all of the dialogue on there. So take a
- 39:35look at this article because that will kind of go into better detail. Have
- 39:37you run across this at all? Oh? Yeah, So streaming gaps are
- 39:45terrible about this. It's about loudness metering and going between YouTube, YouTube,
- 39:53TV, Disney plus Netflix. They all have different ranges of volume. Netflix,
- 39:59I know't was kind of one of the first, I think to really
- 40:01work on this and make this technology available for somebody. Maybe that is a
- 40:07little harder of hearing or is a trouble with the dialogue. They did a
- 40:09lot to kind of clean that up. Yeah, accessibility, we've talked about
- 40:15this and the university a notre name we're doing a big push on in the
- 40:21classrooms is about accessibility in the classroom at a digital level. Yeah, So
- 40:27accessibility across all platforms is not equal. It's not equitable. So it's hard
- 40:32to make a platform and then know how to be accessible to everyone. So
- 40:39you know, it's it's not just you and me, there's the whole world
- 40:44has to be accessible to this. So it's hard for a manufacturer to conform
- 40:50to a standard when there are tens of thousands. There's not hundreds of thousands
- 40:54of different applications that have to use this that may change their settings based on
- 40:59user preference, right right, People sometimes get so frustrated and like you said,
- 41:07I will, I will Oh. Like you said, it kind of
- 41:09goes between the streaming services too. I mean network television. You watch it
- 41:15okay, then you decide, okay, I want to watch something on and
- 41:17you may have seen it come across this too. On the volume levels.
- 41:21You know, you go you're watching network television or maybe you're watching a streaming
- 41:24service like Disney Plus or Paramount Plus. And then you go back to your
- 41:29television and your television blaring because you had to turn it up just to be
- 41:32able to hear the sound, and it's it's just pushed at different levels.
- 41:37Yeah, so that there is a there is a mandated loudness level that has
- 41:45to be met my broadcast television standards now, So there's actually equipment in most
- 41:50TV stations that will bring volume levels up and down based on their loudness if
- 41:54it's up or over, and then you can get fined if you're if you're
- 41:57if you're you're programming exceeds that has to be brought down by this hardware.
- 42:01But I will say that if you if you own a Roku TV and you
- 42:07download the Roku app on your phone, you can get personal audio delivered from
- 42:13your TV to your phone to your phone. So if I'm watching TV,
- 42:19say Caitlin's on her computer doing work, all right, I'm sitting in the
- 42:21living room on the couch and I want to watch a show. I open
- 42:24up the Roku app on my phone, say give me personalized audio, and
- 42:28it'll play audio lot on my phone. Nice. So if you're wearing your
- 42:31air air buds. You've got that then like going into your headphones. Yeah,
- 42:36it goes through your goes from your over the network. It to be
- 42:38connected to the same network as your TV. But yeah, I could.
- 42:43I've I've done it where I put on my my Wise bluetooth noise canceling earbuds
- 42:47that I have or no headphones that I have and have walked around the house
- 42:51doing chores while there's a movie been playing on the TV. So you're not
- 42:53missing anything. That's kind of cool. Well, you know, you you
- 42:55walk through the liver room, stop and watch for a second, walk through
- 42:59it comfitting, which cause hear everything, but it's all through, but it's
- 43:01not playing out of the TV anymore. So it's not playing in the room.
- 43:05So I'm not interrupting anybody else. I'm not interrupting Caitlin if she's doing
- 43:07work or so. If you want a Roku TV, I highly recommend you
- 43:12downloading the app because it also uses your photos are remote. Now, could
- 43:15you use about a Rocu stick? So if you're you're maybe it's not a
- 43:21Roku TV, but maybe a Rocu stick that you're watching, you know,
- 43:24streaming content on. Can you do the same thing. I guess. I
- 43:27don't know. I don't have a Rocue stick. I just have the Roku
- 43:29TV, so I don't know, right, I kind of wonder how that
- 43:31would work. But that's actually a pretty good Ye Roku TVs are Aren't they?
- 43:35Not that bad? Are they? I mean? No, we we
- 43:37bought this is our second Recu TV that we've owned. We owned a thirty
- 43:42five inch before we moved out of our apartment, and I think we have
- 43:45the sixty five inch now and it's been fantastic, right, I remember when
- 43:50TV's the last twenty years? Though, Boy I sound old when I say
- 43:52that, don't I. I'm trying to think. So. The first LCD
- 43:57TV that I bought, right, I bought it for Christmas twenty ten.
- 44:00Right. It was a tcl oh gosh, yeah, thirty two inch seven
- 44:07twenty p right, and I still have it and use it in the basement.
- 44:12Mine was a view Sonic and it still works. When view Sonic made
- 44:15televisions, yeah that was. It still works and I use it. I
- 44:19haven't set up for my retro gaming system, so I have got my Nintendo
- 44:22and stuff plugging because it has actually has a v in. Oh cool,
- 44:24but it has it's got two HDMI and av in composite in component in uh
- 44:32and I think that's it all right. Question for you speaking of gaming.
- 44:37A couple of weeks ago, some of something you had done got you banned
- 44:44from playing one of your favorite games. Did How did you? Number one?
- 44:49How did you handle it? Because I mean, I play this game
- 44:52on my phone a lot, and if I got banned, I would be
- 44:53I would be I'd be disappointed. I Yeah, So I a lot of
- 45:00World of Warcraft and I have been playing since two thousand and five, right,
- 45:04And they released new content for the classic version of the game called Season
- 45:09of Discovery. And if you know what happened, if you're listening and you
- 45:15play World of Warcraft, or you know somebody that plays World of Warcraft,
- 45:17you can ask them about it. There was a big band wave that went
- 45:21through it and impacted a lot of people that yes, they violated the terms
- 45:24of service by participating in a by participating in the buying and selling of gold
- 45:32within the game, violates the terms of service. Could I give you one
- 45:37up on play in the game. It's just like an added benefit, right,
- 45:39Yes, So there was this massive band wave that banned tens of thousands,
- 45:44if not hundreds of thousands of accounts across the world Warcraft and I got
- 45:47caught in that because I'd been playing it. How did I let you know?
- 45:52Did you get a pop up or did you get an email? Well,
- 45:55if you listen to the recording of that show for two weeks go it
- 46:00happened while we were on the show. Oh wow, Oh that I did
- 46:04know because right at the end of the show, I was logging it into
- 46:07play because I was gonna play after we recording the show, and it disconnected
- 46:13me. And I was like, oh, I just got disconnected. Log
- 46:14back in is like, your account has been suspended for fourteen days. You're
- 46:19violating in terms of service. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So if you
- 46:22listen to the go back and listen to the show, because it's funny,
- 46:23because you could probably hear me, like my voice probably chasing pitch. I
- 46:29was like, I I mad, I might, I might not have talked
- 46:31the last twenty minutes of the show. I don't remember. Yeah, you
- 46:34were it, but those fourteen days were up today. So I'll once we're
- 46:39done recording, I'm gonna check back in, log back in, see when
- 46:42the thing's good. But now you have it, will you have the stuff
- 46:45that you had before the band? You don't know, Oh my gosh,
- 46:49I don't know. They said that, they said, we've taken action against
- 46:52you account. We're going to take back the items that you bought with the
- 46:54gold that you got and all this stuff. So so it wasn't a significant
- 47:00amount of gold, right, it was a very small amount. But according
- 47:06to the Reddit threads and the forum posts and stuff, it didn't matter if
- 47:08you bought one gold or twenty thousand gold, right, you got caught up
- 47:13in it. And so I learned my lesson because I would be devastated if
- 47:17I lost my account from of two thousand and five to now all of that
- 47:22character progression across all those years. And so learned my lesson. But it
- 47:29is what it is. If you know what I'm talking about, you kind
- 47:31of understand my frustration with that whole thing. All right. So I'm wondering
- 47:37in the meantime, do you have another game that you so here you are
- 47:40you can't play this one, and you know you get free time in your
- 47:44hand? Is there another game that maybe you jumped to? Yeah, so
- 47:47I've been playing Overwatch two. I played some more Boulder Skate three, which
- 47:52has been fantastic. I actually worked on some video projects I needed to get
- 47:55done that. Yeah, I just downloaded a new game called Wrecked. It's
- 48:02a demo derby demolition derby crash them up the game. And then I've been
- 48:07playing a a ghost hunting game called Fasmophobia with some friends of mine, which
- 48:13is a really fun game. But if you're into horror games, oh cool.
- 48:15You have to like go into old buildings and they contact the ghosts and
- 48:19then they you have to track them down and it's really fun. But so
- 48:22I've been I've been supplementing my time with other games, so I have at
- 48:27the end of the world. I've been contemplating of getting the game pass because
- 48:31I had it at one time, and I'm thinking, Okay, maybe it's
- 48:34time to get that all set up again and and start to just have some
- 48:37fun, maybe take you know, an hour and play a game. And
- 48:42I was looking at that. I was also looking at Epic and so I
- 48:45wanted our listeners to know if you go to store dot Epic games dot com,
- 48:49they have some free game content that is in there, and they usually
- 48:52do this around this time of the year to get ready for the new year.
- 48:55You may find some there to play just this weekend that are going to
- 48:59be a lot of fun. My daughter has been a big fan of SIMS,
- 49:05and they had SIMS pets that were available and I'm talking free, you
- 49:08know, they were doing that. They've got red Dead redemption too, if
- 49:13you wanted to play that, you know, if you wanted to play it.
- 49:15A couple years ago, it was like sixty seventy bucks. Now you
- 49:17can get it for twenty dollars. And again you can find that at storep
- 49:22Epic games dot com. They list free games in there as well. But
- 49:25yeah, you can always find most of the major game providers, Epic Apple,
- 49:32you know all. You know, Activision, you know ea, they
- 49:36always have these you know, store sales or you free sometimes free, just
- 49:39try and get you in to buy it and hopefully play those games and then
- 49:43play more games on their platforms. But Steam always has good sales around this
- 49:47time of the year or so. I'll tell you. One of the things
- 49:50that blew me away the other day was a demo. If you haven't seen
- 49:52it yet, you find it on YouTube for the new updates that they've done
- 49:55with Microsoft Flight Simulator and if you think about it, kind of sad because
- 50:00Microsoft Flight similarly went away for years. It was gone for a long time,
- 50:05maybe five, five years, six years, I don't remember. I
- 50:08think twenty twelve was the last one and then twenty twenty was back. Yeah,
- 50:14it was like they just kind of okay, it's it's it's out there.
- 50:16But the changes they made were pretty dynamic. And now the graphics.
- 50:21If you've not seen it since twenty twelve or even some of the earlier days,
- 50:24I remember playing it on DOS. That's how far back I go with
- 50:29with FLIGHTSIM it's pretty amazing when you see what they've done with it right now.
- 50:34And that's one you can play with the Microsoft you know, game Pass
- 50:38what was it? It was? What is that one website I've gotten to.
- 50:42I've I've bought Office off of there, and I've bought Windows eleven,
- 50:46Stax Social yes, yes, Jack Social Keys. Yeah. They had a
- 50:51one month subscription to game Pass I think for under eight bucks, so you
- 50:55just to get in there. It's been eight bucks. You get in there
- 50:59for a month and try it and see if you like it, and if
- 51:00you do, then it goes to what fifteen sixteen bucks? A month,
- 51:04so it seemed like that would be probably worth it. What year do you
- 51:07think the first Matrouf flight sibmitter released? I am going to say nineteen ninety
- 51:13five, nineteen eighty six? Are you kidding me? Eighty six? What
- 51:20what platform was it on? They? I don't know, but they,
- 51:24oh, you know what? Did the series begin in nineteen eighty two?
- 51:28That's right, that would make sense because so my mom's boss, May he
- 51:32rest in peace. My mom bought an airplane with him. They went and
- 51:36the goal was I was gonna get my pilot's license. They bought a Setabria
- 51:39and I would go up with him and we would fly and he would do,
- 51:45you know, loop the loops and you know, he would do all
- 51:47that kind of stuff. But he had flight simulator in his office, so
- 51:51that would have been in the early eighties, maybe eighty two. Wait what
- 51:57year did you say? Eighty eighty two, eighty three, eighty six?
- 52:00Yes, yeah, she stopped working for him in eighty three. But he
- 52:07had a DOS version. It was like yellow like may like a wireframe almost,
- 52:14but if he needed to, he could hit an escape button and a
- 52:16spreadsheet would come up. So if you were at work and it wasn't Microsoft
- 52:22that made it. It was it was another Mega. It was another company.
- 52:27I don't know was it a Mega. I think it might have been
- 52:30have something else. I want to say Apagee or something like that. But
- 52:34I know that they kind of change hands. And then Mike when Microsoft took
- 52:37him over, they they took it to a whole new level. Yeah,
- 52:40and I was wrong. Twenty twelve was not the most recent. It was
- 52:45two thousand and six. Was the last flight sim that was out before twenty
- 52:49nineteen. Wow, Yeah, they had left. They had let it go
- 52:51for a many years. It was still fun to fly fly back then.
- 52:53But what you get now is it's pretty amazing. It's incredible you can do
- 52:59in VR. It's awesome. All right, Well, take another quick break,
- 53:01come back with more of tech talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm
- 53:05Sean Deired. Find us on Facebook at Facebook dot com tech Talkers, and
- 53:09now back to tech talk Radio. So we've been talking about flight simars the
- 53:14last segment there, and just reminded me of the website that I love.
- 53:16He used to sing called adsb exchange dot com. No, what is it,
- 53:21adsp exchange. So adspexchange dot com is a flight tracking website, literally
- 53:28a beacon. Most airplanes have what they call ADSB transmitter. That's it's the
- 53:32location speed VITA Reference information name all Zoe. This guy created this website that
- 53:42put these ADSB sensors around the world. He will he will literally send you
- 53:46a kit so you can put one at your house and connect to the internet
- 53:50and then you can go to this website and literally trackplanes around the world.
- 53:54Wow. So if a plane is taken off right now in Brussels, I
- 53:58can actually see this plane taken off. Yeah, so you can literally go.
- 54:02You can go to this website, go to the map, and you
- 54:05can see every flight that is being picked up by an ADSB ADSB receiver.
- 54:12Can you do it by tail number? You can do by tail number.
- 54:15You can just click out of one. You can just hey, there's a
- 54:17plane flying overhead. Go want to go to it on your phone, pull
- 54:20it up and say, oh, yep, here there's my location. Hope,
- 54:22Yeah, there's a plane. Poop, And then you can see where
- 54:23it is, where it came from, it's if it's registered a flight plan,
- 54:28where it's landing, how long it's been in the air registration. All
- 54:30this stuff is this gonna be a little better than flight Tracker, because that's
- 54:34a that's another app, or flight aware, flight aware, they're they're all
- 54:37kind of the same thing. Yeah, but this one just from a UI
- 54:42standpoint, from a user experience standpoint, it just is so much better.
- 54:46And go to this website check it out, and you will be your mind
- 54:50will be blown at how many airplanes are actually in the air right now.
- 54:52Oh, it's kind of crazy, especially around this time of the year too,
- 54:55you know this weekend. Peoples, there are there are, I mean,
- 55:00it's insane, all right. So what is the website address again?
- 55:04Globe, like the word Globe dot adsb exchange dot com. Awesome. Well,
- 55:08I'm gonna take a screen. I'm gonna take a screenshot so Andie can
- 55:10post this so you can just put it on our blog site. That'd be
- 55:14cool. All right. That's it for this week's tech Talk Radio last show
- 55:16of the year. Sorry the other guys couldn't join us, but we'll be
