- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, here on the woelo up network, we're going
- 0:01Speaker 1: to do a couple of episodes today. The first one's
- 0:04Speaker 1: going to be about dry January. Now, as you know,
- 0:09Speaker 1: since May fourth, twenty twenty four, when I started feeling
- 0:12Speaker 1: immense pain after downing an ipa, all right, I have
- 0:18Speaker 1: stopped drinking completely. My Octoberfest is Octoberfest. My Dry January
- 0:24Speaker 1: is every month, so that's where I stay on it.
- 0:29Speaker 1: But it's kind of interesting that it seemed like doctor
- 0:32Speaker 1: Oz was endorsing alcohol when they released the dietary restrictions
- 0:39Speaker 1: this past week. Did you hear this?
- 0:42Speaker 2: So alcohol is a social lubricant that brings people together.
- 0:47Speaker 2: In the best case scenario, I don't think you should
- 0:49Speaker 2: drink alcohol, but it does allow people an excuse to
- 0:52Speaker 2: bond and socialize, and there's probably nothing healthier. They're having
- 0:55Speaker 2: a good time with friends in a safe way. If
- 0:57Speaker 2: you look at the blue zones, for example, around the
- 0:59Speaker 2: world live the longest, alcohol is sometimes part of their diet. Again,
- 1:03Speaker 2: small amounts, taken very judiciously and usually in a celebratory fashion.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So there is alcohol on these dietary guidelines, but the
- 1:11Speaker 2: implication is don't have it for breakfast. There should be
- 1:14Speaker 2: something done in small amount with hopefully in some kind
- 1:18Speaker 2: of an event that may have alcohol added. But they
- 1:22Speaker 2: general move away from two glasses of men one glass
- 1:24Speaker 2: to wind. There was never really good data to support
- 1:27Speaker 2: that that quantity of alcohol consumption. That data was probably
- 1:31Speaker 2: primarily confused with broader data about social connectedness.
- 1:35Speaker 1: All right, I want to hear this one more time.
- 1:37Speaker 1: What did he say about alcohol being on the dietary guidelines.
- 1:45Speaker 2: There is alcohol on these dietary guidelines.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And there you go in dry January. Doctor memd Oz
- 1:51Speaker 1: is saying there is alcohol on the dietary guideline. New
- 1:56Speaker 1: federal guidelines announced by the Trump administration on Wednesday include
- 2:00Speaker 1: a dramatic change on alcohol consumption. The new guidelines, which
- 2:05Speaker 1: are updated every five years, provide language on alcohol moderation
- 2:09Speaker 1: rather than specific drink limits has been included in the past.
- 2:13Speaker 1: The new dietary guidelines for Americans, according to ABC News,
- 2:17Speaker 1: instructs Americans to limit alcoholic beverages, which is a change
- 2:22Speaker 1: from previous guides that said, hey, over limit twenty one
- 2:29Speaker 1: and over a limit consumption and two drinks. So basically
- 2:32Speaker 1: they're saying, up halfine moderation, have it as you can.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And I just find this so fascinating that this administration
- 2:45Speaker 1: believes in sort of alcohol consumption because this is dry January,
- 2:53Speaker 1: and it's almost like they're putting a cool blanket or
- 2:58Speaker 1: whatever on the dry January idea, say yeah, go out
- 3:01Speaker 1: and drink, it's all the dietary guidelines. Now, well, I've
- 3:05Speaker 1: learned my lesson and I've stopped. I mean, I went
- 3:09Speaker 1: to the Mean Fiddler last week, didn't have a drink,
- 3:11Speaker 1: actually asked for coke, and you know what, I wasn't
- 3:14Speaker 1: embarrassed by it. That's the other thing is I feel
- 3:18Speaker 1: like there's this pressure to drink. I never really People
- 3:23Speaker 1: might disagree with me, but I never really did it
- 3:26Speaker 1: to be cool. I just whatever. But there is a
- 3:32Speaker 1: social pressure to drink. Once you remove that pressure from
- 3:36Speaker 1: your mind and you just enjoy your time out and
- 3:39Speaker 1: watch everybody else get drunk, that's the best way to
- 3:42Speaker 1: do it. If you want to be the sober one,
- 3:45Speaker 1: go for it. If you want to extend dry January
- 3:48Speaker 1: into dry February, dry March, dry and dry March. I
- 3:52Speaker 1: was on Patrick say I'm actually gonna try non alcoholic Guinness.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I am determined to try that this year. I'm determined
- 3:58Speaker 1: to try that this year because I do like my goodness,
- 4:02Speaker 1: but I like it not alcoholic. Now it'd be a
- 4:03Speaker 1: different story. But to come out in this month specifically
- 4:11Speaker 1: and pour cold water or I guess you would say
- 4:16Speaker 1: cold booze on dry January is fascinating to me. They
- 4:21Speaker 1: are putting alcohol in moderation on the dietary restrictions. There's
- 4:27Speaker 1: no distinction between alcohol guidance for men and women, though
- 4:30Speaker 1: scientific research has shown the sexes metabolized alcohol differently, and
- 4:36Speaker 1: of course for me, I was like eighty five eighty
- 4:39Speaker 1: six pounds, so it would be very different for me.
- 4:41Speaker 1: But having learned my lesson in May of twenty twenty four,
- 4:46Speaker 1: it's been dry every day and I'm proud of that.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And I just find it fascinating that under rfk's watch,
- 4:53Speaker 1: under Doctor Oz's watch, there is justification for alcohol. And
- 5:00Speaker 1: I don't know if I agree with it. I understand it. It's
- 5:04Speaker 1: a social lubricant, which is a very weird thing to say.
- 5:08Speaker 1: But is it healthy for the FDA to come out
- 5:11Speaker 1: with these guidelines. I don't know. I feel like that's
- 5:19Speaker 1: a stretch. I feel like we're gonna do dry January
- 5:23Speaker 1: we should promote dry January, not say well, alcohol is this,
- 5:26Speaker 1: alcohol is that?
- 5:29Speaker 2: So?
- 5:29Speaker 1: I don't know about this move, but from personal experience,
- 5:33Speaker 1: even before, like junior year, senior year in college, I
- 5:40Speaker 1: was enjoying watching anybody else get hammered. Well, I was sober,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and I've gone back to that. Now I've been forced
- 5:46Speaker 1: to go back to it, but I'm glad I did
- 5:48Speaker 1: because I think it's more fun to watch everybody else
- 5:50Speaker 1: get wrecked than you. And maybe that sounds harsh, but
- 5:55Speaker 1: it is kind of funny and you hope they will okay.
- 6:02Speaker 1: But I think we have to eliminate the social pressures
- 6:11Speaker 1: of drinking and admit that that can lead alcoholism instead
- 6:18Speaker 1: of calling it a social lubricant, Doctor Oz, dry January.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Should we dry every day? If you want to be
- 6:25Speaker 1: here for a long long time. Call me a prude,
- 6:29Speaker 1: but a lot of you know me, and I've had
- 6:31Speaker 1: some rough nights and I don't regret it. But I'm
- 6:41Speaker 1: glad that i had that wake up call in twenty
- 6:44Speaker 1: twenty four because now I'm able to live life, enjoy life,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and watch life unfold instead of feel that pressure to
- 6:53Speaker 1: go back into consumption. We have to have one leg
- 6:57Speaker 1: up over alcohol. And if you can do that in moderation,
- 7:02Speaker 1: good for you. But if you can't and you came
- 7:06Speaker 1: into the pressure, don't stay sober. I know the line.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I'd stay sober and get pulled over, but literally stay
- 7:14Speaker 1: sober and just enjoy life and not just make dry January,
- 7:18Speaker 1: dridge Anuary, make it dry every day. I've done that,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and I feel so much better for it. Here on
- 7:25Speaker 1: the Walling Up Network,
