- 0:08Speaker 1: The Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the book
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Exodus. As we start chapter five. Welcome to the
- 0:23Speaker 1: Bible Study Podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. Moses will
- 0:27Speaker 1: stand before Pharaoh and talk about what he's looking for,
- 0:31Speaker 1: But first a word from this sponsor. This section is
- 0:35Speaker 1: labeled Bricks without Straw Exodus five. Afterward, Moses and Aaron
- 0:40Speaker 1: went to Pharaoh and said, this is what the Lord,
- 0:43Speaker 1: the God of Israel, says, Let my people go, so
- 0:46Speaker 1: that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Pharaoh said, who is the Lord that I should obey
- 0:51Speaker 1: him and let Israel go. I do not know the Lord,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and I will not let Israel go. Then they said,
- 0:57Speaker 1: the God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now
- 1:00Speaker 1: let us take a three day journey into the wilderness
- 1:03Speaker 1: to offer sacrifices to the Lord, our god, or he
- 1:06Speaker 1: may strike us with plagues or with the sword. But
- 1:10Speaker 1: the King of Egypt said, Moses and Aaron, why are
- 1:13Speaker 1: you taking the people away from their labor. Get back
- 1:16Speaker 1: to your work. Then Pharaoh said, look, the people of
- 1:20Speaker 1: the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them
- 1:23Speaker 1: from working. The same day, Pharaoh gave this order to
- 1:26Speaker 1: the slave drivers and the overseers in charge of the people.
- 1:30Speaker 1: You were to no longer supply the people with straw
- 1:32Speaker 1: for making bricks. Let them go and gather their own straw,
- 1:35Speaker 1: but require them to make the same number of bricks
- 1:38Speaker 1: as before. Don't reduce the quota. They are lazy, that
- 1:41Speaker 1: is why they are crying out. Let us go and
- 1:43Speaker 1: sacrifice to our God. Now make the work harder for
- 1:46Speaker 1: the people so that they keep working and pay no
- 1:49Speaker 1: attention to lies. Then the slave drivers and overseers went
- 1:54Speaker 1: out and said to the people, this is what Pharaoh says.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I will not give you any more straw. Go and
- 2:00Speaker 1: get your own straw wherever you can find it, but
- 2:03Speaker 1: your work will not be reduced at all. So the
- 2:05Speaker 1: people scattered all over Egypt together stuble to use for straw.
- 2:10Speaker 1: The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, complete their work
- 2:13Speaker 1: required of you before each day, just as when you
- 2:17Speaker 1: had straw. And Pharaoh's slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers
- 2:20Speaker 1: they had appointed, demanding, why haven't you met your quota
- 2:23Speaker 1: of bricks yesterday or today as before? So this may
- 2:32Speaker 1: have gone as God planned, but it certainly didn't go
- 2:34Speaker 1: the way Moses thought it would or the way the
- 2:36Speaker 1: people of Israel hoped it would. So Moses appears before Pharaoh,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and he is not requesting at this point that Pharaoh
- 2:48Speaker 1: let people go completely. He is requesting that they get
- 2:52Speaker 1: basically this break, this holiday here for something like six
- 2:58Speaker 1: days a week, three days into the wilderness. That makes
- 3:01Speaker 1: sacrifices in three days back, one would assume, and all
- 3:05Speaker 1: the people of Israel, and this is not a union negotiation,
- 3:10Speaker 1: they are slaves. And so Pharaoh does not want to
- 3:13Speaker 1: do this, doesn't necessarily trust Moses. But even if he did,
- 3:17Speaker 1: he's just not going to do this, and so he
- 3:21Speaker 1: instead makes things harder. He says, we're going to make
- 3:25Speaker 1: you do just as much work and a little more.
- 3:28Speaker 1: We're going to make you get your own straw, even
- 3:31Speaker 1: though for making your brick, and you're going to have
- 3:34Speaker 1: all the same quotas. So Moses goes to Pharaoh. Pharaoh responds,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and everything gets harder. So how do you think the
- 3:43Speaker 1: people of Israel respond? Then the Israelite overseers went and
- 3:47Speaker 1: appealed to Pharaoh, why have you treated your servants this way?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told
- 3:54Speaker 1: make bricks. Your servants are being beaten, but the fault
- 3:58Speaker 1: is with your own people. Pharaoh said, lay, that's what
- 4:00Speaker 1: you are lazy. That is why you keep saying, let
- 4:03Speaker 1: us go and sacrifice to the Lord. Now get to work.
- 4:06Speaker 1: You will not be given any straw, yet you must
- 4:08Speaker 1: produce your full quota of bricks. The Israelite overseers realized
- 4:13Speaker 1: they were in trouble when they were told you were
- 4:15Speaker 1: not to reduce the number of bricks required for you
- 4:18Speaker 1: each day. When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and
- 4:21Speaker 1: Aaron waiting to meet them, and they said, may the
- 4:24Speaker 1: Lord look on you and judge you. You have made
- 4:27Speaker 1: us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put
- 4:30Speaker 1: a sword in their hand to kill us. So they
- 4:35Speaker 1: go back to Pharaoh and they say, this doesn't work,
- 4:38Speaker 1: this isn't fair. Pharaoh doesn't care. He says they're lazy,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and so they go and find Moses in Aer and
- 4:46Speaker 1: they blame them, And can you blame them for blaming them?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Their life was bad and it's just gotten worse. And
- 4:55Speaker 1: sometimes you need to do that. Sometimes you need to
- 4:59Speaker 1: purchase test the current situation, and things can get harder
- 5:03Speaker 1: in the meantime. Right, It's not like Pharaoh was going
- 5:06Speaker 1: to immediately say, oh you're right, Oh my goodness, you
- 5:09Speaker 1: shouldn't be a slave. We'll just let you all go,
- 5:12Speaker 1: or you should go and worship and things like that.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It doesn't happen. God's promises delivered. Moses returned to the
- 5:21Speaker 1: Lord and said, why Lord, have you brought trouble on
- 5:23Speaker 1: this people? Is this why you sent me? Ever since
- 5:27Speaker 1: I went to Pharaoh and speak in your name, he
- 5:29Speaker 1: has brought trouble on this people, and you have not
- 5:32Speaker 1: rescued your people at all. So Moses blames God. Now,
- 5:39Speaker 1: this whole section here is going to be we have
- 5:44Speaker 1: a couple different sections in the Book of Exodus. We
- 5:47Speaker 1: have pre that early life of Moses that we didn't
- 5:52Speaker 1: spend a whole lot of time on, and then we
- 5:54Speaker 1: have this section here of getting Israel out of Egypt.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Now we're going to have a section whether they learn
- 6:01Speaker 1: how to make the tabernacle, We're going to have sections
- 6:03Speaker 1: about the law, and then we're going to have the
- 6:06Speaker 1: whole rest of the book where they're trying to get
- 6:08Speaker 1: Egypt out of Israel. And yes, I did say that correctly.
- 6:12Speaker 1: They're trying to take the people who were born in
- 6:15Speaker 1: Egypt and change them into the nation of Israel, and
- 6:18Speaker 1: that's actually going to be the hardest part of all.
- 6:21Speaker 1: But we're going to continue on a bit here. We're
- 6:23Speaker 1: not going to stop just yet because we got a
- 6:26Speaker 1: lot of Exodus let to cover. So I'm going to
- 6:28Speaker 1: go into chapter six, and we're going to do chapter
- 6:31Speaker 1: six their first section. Here. Then, the Lord said to Moses,
- 6:35Speaker 1: now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Because of my mighty hand, he will let them go.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Because of my mighty hand, he will drive them out
- 6:43Speaker 1: of his country. God also said to Moses, I am
- 6:47Speaker 1: the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to
- 6:50Speaker 1: Jacob as God Almighty. But by my name the Lord,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I did not make myself known to them. I also
- 6:57Speaker 1: established my covenant with them to get them the land
- 7:00Speaker 1: of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners. Moreover, I have
- 7:04Speaker 1: heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving,
- 7:09Speaker 1: and I have remembered my covenant. Therefore, say to the Israelites,
- 7:13Speaker 1: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out
- 7:15Speaker 1: from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free
- 7:18Speaker 1: you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem
- 7:21Speaker 1: you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I will take you as my own people, and I
- 7:27Speaker 1: will be your God. Then you will know that I
- 7:29Speaker 1: am the Lord, your God, who brought you out from
- 7:31Speaker 1: under the yoke of the Egyptians, and I will bring
- 7:35Speaker 1: you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to
- 7:38Speaker 1: give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will
- 7:41Speaker 1: give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not
- 7:47Speaker 1: listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Then the Lord said to Moses, go tell Pharaoh, King
- 7:53Speaker 1: of Egypt, to let the Israelites go out of his country.
- 7:57Speaker 1: But Moses said to the Lord, if the Israelites will
- 8:00Speaker 1: not listen to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me?
- 8:03Speaker 1: Since I speak with faltering lips. So Moses is making
- 8:09Speaker 1: up some excuses again, but he is sent back to
- 8:13Speaker 1: talk to Pharaoh to see if it will go any better.
- 8:16Speaker 1: So God says to Moses, who comes to him and
- 8:19Speaker 1: complains that I'm God, You're not by the way, I'm
- 8:25Speaker 1: God and I will do this. And Moses has a
- 8:30Speaker 1: little trouble believing this, doesn't really want to go back
- 8:32Speaker 1: to Pharaoh. The people of Israel definitely don't believe this
- 8:35Speaker 1: at this point because things just got harsher and they
- 8:37Speaker 1: can't hear God because they are discouraged. And then one
- 8:42Speaker 1: more section here will finish out this chapter. Now, the
- 8:47Speaker 1: Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron about the Israelites and Pharaoh,
- 8:49Speaker 1: king of Egypt, and he commanded them to bring the
- 8:52Speaker 1: Israelites out of Egypt. These were the heads of the families.
- 8:55Speaker 1: The sons of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel, were
- 8:59Speaker 1: Hannok and Palu, Hesron and Karmi. They were the clans
- 9:02Speaker 1: of Reuben. The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamyn, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and Shaou, the son of a Canaanite woman. These were
- 9:13Speaker 1: the sons of Simeon. These were the names of the
- 9:16Speaker 1: sons of Levi. According to their records, Ghershan, Kohath, and Marri.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Levi lived one hundred and thirty seven years. The sons
- 9:24Speaker 1: of Gershan by clans were Libni and Simai. The sons
- 9:29Speaker 1: of Kohath were Amram, Ishar, Hebrun, and Uziel. Kohath lived
- 9:36Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty three years. The sons of Mary
- 9:39Speaker 1: were Mahali and Mushi. These were the sons of Levi
- 9:43Speaker 1: according to their records. Amran married his father's sister, Jokhabed,
- 9:49Speaker 1: who bore him Aaron and Moses. Amran lived one hundred
- 9:52Speaker 1: and thirty seven years. The sons of Ishar were Corah, Nephag,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and Zigri. The sons of Uziel well mush L, El
- 10:01Speaker 1: Zephon and Zithri. Aaron married Elishiba, daughter of Aminidab and
- 10:07Speaker 1: sister of Nashon, and she bore him Nadab and Abihu,
- 10:12Speaker 1: Elizar and Ithamar. The sons of Korro were Asir, El Khanan,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and Abissaf. These were the Korah height clans. Elis R,
- 10:24Speaker 1: son of Erin, married one of the daughters of Putiel,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and she bore him Phineas. These were the heads of
- 10:30Speaker 1: the Levite families clan by clan. It was this Aaron
- 10:34Speaker 1: and Moses, to whom the Lord said, bring the Israelites
- 10:38Speaker 1: out of Egypt. By their divisions. They were the ones
- 10:41Speaker 1: who spoke to Pharaoh, King of Egypt, about bringing Israelites
- 10:44Speaker 1: out of Egypt. This same Moses and Aaron. Now, we
- 10:50Speaker 1: live in a society where genealogies aren't all that interesting
- 10:55Speaker 1: and aren't well that No. Now, my family, we have
- 10:58Speaker 1: our genealogies back to the sixteen hundreds on both my
- 11:01Speaker 1: mother's and father's side. But my wife's family, when I
- 11:04Speaker 1: married her, she didn't even know what her grandmother's maid
- 11:08Speaker 1: name was. And that's not all that uncommon where I
- 11:11Speaker 1: live in the US. But there are countries, there are people,
- 11:15Speaker 1: there are tribes that keep very close track of these
- 11:18Speaker 1: and these are important things. And that was true of
- 11:22Speaker 1: the Hebrews of these people here. And so we're talking
- 11:25Speaker 1: about where do Moses and Aaron come from. So most
- 11:28Speaker 1: of this genealogy here was focused on the sons of Levi,
- 11:33Speaker 1: because Moses and Aaron descend from Levi, one of the
- 11:38Speaker 1: twelve sons of Israel or Jacob. And then one last section,
- 11:43Speaker 1: Aaron speaks for Moses. Now, when the Lord spoke to
- 11:46Speaker 1: Moses in Egypt, he said to him, I am the Lord.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Tell Pharaoh, King of Egypt, everything I tell you. But
- 11:51Speaker 1: Moses said to the Lord, since I speak with faltering lips,
- 11:54Speaker 1: why would Pharaoh listen to me? And then we're going
- 11:58Speaker 1: to end they that's kind of a repetition from what
- 12:03Speaker 1: we learned earlier. We're going to jump into Exodus seven
- 12:06Speaker 1: as we get back, and this is where we start
- 12:09Speaker 1: to get signs and wonders and plagues, and that's the
- 12:14Speaker 1: next section of the Book of Exodus. Just asking nicely
- 12:19Speaker 1: didn't work, so other things are going to happen. And
- 12:22Speaker 1: with that, we're going to end this episode of the
- 12:24Speaker 1: Bible Study Podcast. If you have any questions, send an
