Latest / Mount Eaton Church / Christ the True and Better - Hebrews 13 - Christ Never Changes
Transcript
- 0:00This is the Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 3, Section 1.
- 0:21One of the things I want to encourage you all, especially those who are going through
- 0:24some things, is that God has ordained all things.
- 0:32He's not the author of sin, He doesn't cause sin, but He uses it.
- 0:38And He uses everything in this earth for His glory and honor, whether we like it or not.
- 0:44But God gets the glory.
- 0:47Amen?
- 0:48So let's dive in.
- 0:51Chapter 13, we finally finished Hebrews.
- 0:53I was watching John Piper this morning, and it took him two years to go through Hebrews.
- 1:03So you might want to turn me down, get a little feedback.
- 1:06Thank you.
- 1:07Can you imagine doing the, I can.
- 1:12But we're going to do two years over a lifetime, as long as I'm alive and preaching at 92,
- 1:21by God's grace, right John?
- 1:23So anyway, let's pray.
- 1:25Father, I want to thank you for this chapter, thank you for this book.
- 1:30Thank you that we know that you never change.
- 1:34You are the same today, yesterday, and forever.
- 1:37You are God.
- 1:39And that all of the things throughout all of our history point to one person, you.
- 1:48And you point us to the Father.
- 1:51And the Spirit points us to you.
- 1:53And we are thankful that you are God, the triune.
- 1:58And in your wisdom, Lord, you've redeemed a people.
- 2:02So I pray, Lord, as we go through this chapter, we understand the way we should live, why
- 2:06we should live, and the importance of where we're going.
- 2:11To you be glory in Jesus' name.
- 2:14Amen.
- 2:15All right.
- 2:16So we're just going to start right off, okay?
- 2:20A heart committed to loving Christ is a heart committed to obeying him.
- 2:25Very important.
- 2:26I think one of the things that we have a tendency to do is we diminish the importance of obedience.
- 2:32I'm going to get loud, so I'm just letting you know.
- 2:36We think that the issue of what we should do as believers becomes legalistic.
- 2:44When in reality, true faith is obedience.
- 2:48I've said this before.
- 2:50The reality of true worship is obedience.
- 2:54That's how we worship.
- 2:55If you love me, you will obey me.
- 2:58That is the standard of love for God.
- 3:01Not that we love perfectly, but we love intentionally.
- 3:05And we purpose, through the process of sanctification, become more obedient and more like Jesus.
- 3:13So a heart committed to loving Christ is a heart committed to obeying him.
- 3:19Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, making the best use of the time
- 3:24because the days are evil.
- 3:27Ephesians 5, 15 through 16.
- 3:29So in Hebrews 13, 1 through 6, clarifies this.
- 3:34It's interesting.
- 3:36Now that we're at the end of the book, I am fully convinced, and so is Matthew Henry,
- 3:41if you ever read his commentary, Paul is the writer of this book.
- 3:45When you get to chapter 13 and you read chapter 13 and you go back and you read the apostolic
- 3:52letters that Paul writes, you go, wow, this is Paul.
- 3:56I look at Paul being older in age and a possibility of Luke penning as Paul directs him.
- 4:03And you kind of know that at the end because there's a statement that Paul says kind of
- 4:07lets you know who the author is.
- 4:11And I think some scholars are hesitant to say it.
- 4:13I don't know why.
- 4:16Because even in the earliest parts of what you would consider reformed history, Paul
- 4:22was the writer.
- 4:23Anyway, that being said, verse one says, let brotherly love continue.
- 4:29Let brotherly love continue.
- 4:31He uses this word let because you, through volition, you being a believer, must determine
- 4:40to love the brotherhood.
- 4:43It's your responsibility to love one another.
- 4:46They will know you're my disciples if you have love for one another.
- 4:53You must let brotherly love continue.
- 4:57You must walk in it.
- 4:59It's not about you.
- 5:01It's about him.
- 5:02It's not about what you like or dislike.
- 5:03It's about what he wants.
- 5:06And it's important because it's difficult, especially when you're doing so many different
- 5:10things.
- 5:11Sometimes we have a tendency to forget the importance of the brotherhood and the unity
- 5:15of faith.
- 5:16And not all of us are the same.
- 5:19None of us are the same.
- 5:21We are vastly different.
- 5:24And it's important that we let our love for one another continue.
- 5:29Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers.
- 5:33This term show hospitality to strangers literally means love to strangers.
- 5:39Do not neglect love to strangers.
- 5:43Why?
- 5:45Because you don't know who you're going to be ministering to.
- 5:49You don't know who you're going to minister to.
- 5:53One of the important things is that we have a tendency to think that we are to go out
- 5:58into the community and feed the hungry and feed the poor and take care of those who are
- 6:02in need who have less than us.
- 6:05But you know what happens?
- 6:07We neglect love for the brotherhood.
- 6:10We neglect to show hospitality to strangers who visit.
- 6:16We have a tendency to forget the family.
- 6:19And you can't, if you can't take care of the house that you're in, you're not going to
- 6:23be able to go take care of a stranger's home or help them in their way.
- 6:28It requires that you must live rightly among each other.
- 6:32Right?
- 6:33It's important.
- 6:35Scripture says that God added to their number daily.
- 6:38Not that we went out, even though we go out to preach the gospel, but God adds to the
- 6:43number of the faithful.
- 6:46So how do we balance this out?
- 6:48Well, we don't neglect to show love or to love strangers because for thereby some have
- 6:57entertained angels unaware.
- 7:00I do have a story that fits us really well.
- 7:05One day I was driving a bus for handicapped individuals, developmentally disabled individuals,
- 7:13and we went to Atlantic City.
- 7:14It's a true story.
- 7:17And so we get to Atlantic City, we're walking down the boardwalk because we got to go down
- 7:19to the Civic Center.
- 7:21And there's this gentleman who's sitting on the, and I had just started reading and studying
- 7:26this scripture.
- 7:28This gentleman is sitting on a bench, which is on the, well, it would be my left side,
- 7:33so it'd be the ocean side of the boardwalk.
- 7:36And he says, hey, do you have a dollar?
- 7:40And I was like, no, I don't have a dollar.
- 7:42It was true.
- 7:44I had a $5 bill.
- 7:47And I'm walking, I take three steps, and I get this thought in my mind, you don't know
- 7:51if that's an angel.
- 7:52I'm like, oh, there goes my lunch.
- 7:58So I turn around, I walk back to the guy, and I say, I don't have a dollar, but I do
- 8:04have $5.
- 8:05Here is yours.
- 8:07And I didn't even walk five steps, turned around, and the guy was gone.
- 8:13I'm like, there goes my $5.
- 8:15Now if you understand Atlantic City Boardwalk, it's like a 20-yard space between the stores
- 8:23and the edge where the railing is.
- 8:28There's no way that if I walked five steps, that guy could have like, I couldn't see him
- 8:33anywhere.
- 8:34He was gone.
- 8:35So I was like, okay.
- 8:36Lesson learned when a stranger says, hey, be wise, right?
- 8:41As I read to you earlier, look carefully than how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise,
- 8:47right?
- 8:48Discerning.
- 8:49You've got to discern.
- 8:51So third, remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them.
- 8:57So how can you remember those who are in prison, who are believers in Christ, who have been
- 9:03put there because of their faith, that you also, as if you were in prison with them,
- 9:09must remember them?
- 9:11I mean, would you like to be forgotten if you were in prison?
- 9:15No.
- 9:16It's one of the things I'm thankful for about our church is we've committed during these
- 9:22last couple years to make sure that we lose none, that none are forgotten, that our deacons
- 9:29and our elders work hard, especially our deacons, to make sure that every family that God has
- 9:36assigned to us is remembered and contacted.
- 9:40And they've done a really good job at doing that.
- 9:42So thank you, deacons.
- 9:45Let since you are also, let's keep reading, and those who are mistreated, meaning those
- 9:51who are mistreated for the faith, since you are also in the body.
- 9:54In other words, if one person is suffering and one person is being persecuted, or a family
- 10:00is being persecuted for their faith and they're suffering for the faith, remember they're
- 10:04part of the body.
- 10:05We're going to feel it one day, and we do.
- 10:10Now here's one thing I think that most people don't want to talk about, and I'm just going
- 10:14to talk about it because I really don't care.
- 10:17You're like, that sounds mean.
- 10:19No, in our society, I think we've accommodated people so much that we're not willing to stand
- 10:24on what God says in his word, and I am willing to stand on that and that alone, whether
- 10:29you like it or not.
- 10:32It's not an issue of arrogance, it's an issue of genuine love for you.
- 10:37Let marriage be held in honor among all.
- 10:40All who?
- 10:43All of the family of faith.
- 10:45So I'm going to make this real clear.
- 10:47If there's a church out there that does not honor marriage between a man and a woman,
- 10:53that is not a church.
- 10:56They are not people of faith.
- 10:57I don't care what people say.
- 11:01The woman who did the inaugural prayer is not a pastor.
- 11:07She is not of the faith, and she is a lost woman.
- 11:13We're not even going to get into the issue of the responsibility of the pastor being
- 11:16a man.
- 11:18This is a blatant disregard of the truth of this one statement.
- 11:23Let marriage be held in honor among all.
- 11:26Why?
- 11:27Because next to the church, the first institution that God had created was marriage.
- 11:33It is the one institution by which God had instituted to reflect his glory and how a
- 11:41husband and wife work together and surrendering themselves to the Father, the source of all
- 11:48life, by which they proclaim God in how they live with one another.
- 11:56There's a reason why he was taken, that she was taken from the man.
- 12:03They are one flesh, bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh, is what Adam says.
- 12:09There is not an option here.
- 12:11This is not to decide whatever society says should and shouldn't be.
- 12:18Not your job to determine the sanctity of marriage.
- 12:21The reality is marriage is an institution established by God since the beginning.
- 12:27That being said, as churches and as this church, we have in our constitution and will always
- 12:37continue to honor marriage among the faithful believers of Christ.
- 12:45This is not me accommodating your desires.
- 12:51Now that being said, look what it says in the second part.
- 12:55How do we honor marriage?
- 12:58By keeping the marriage bed undefiled.
- 13:03Isn't that interesting?
- 13:06That the one place that we can show honor is how we as husband and wife live together
- 13:11and be together.
- 13:15I'm trying to be sensitive to the little ones.
- 13:20Look what it says.
- 13:21Why?
- 13:22If we do not, if the church does not honor marriage among all, if the church does not
- 13:29commit to raising up godly men and godly women to keep the marriage bed undefiled, then God
- 13:36will judge the sexually immoral and the adulterous.
- 13:42It's not an option.
- 13:45Get your house right.
- 13:46That's what God is saying here.
- 13:48It's interesting that he uses this at the end of chapter 13.
- 13:54And there was a lot going on.
- 13:57Lord knows we can absolutely read about Eli and his sons and how they didn't honor marriage
- 14:07nor did they honor the marriage bed.
- 14:11So all kinds of things we can walk down and I'm not going to get into that right now,
- 14:14but I will not and we will not as a church defile that or dishonor the institution of
- 14:21marriage, but which God has instituted.
- 14:23It is not ours.
- 14:26It is given to us to steward so that we can enjoy and work together.
- 14:32My wife is my partner.
- 14:34She is not my slave.
- 14:38Verse five says, keep your life free from the love or from love of money and be content
- 14:46with what you have.
- 14:49Keep your life free from love of money.
- 14:53Money is necessary to survive in a world that is driven by money, but I don't love money
- 15:01to the point that I stored away with the hopes that one day, because when you die, someone
- 15:10else is going to get your stuff.
- 15:14Steward the money.
- 15:15Take care of it.
- 15:17Properly use it.
- 15:18Give it when God says to give.
- 15:21Do it joyfully.
- 15:22Be content with what you have.
- 15:25Be happy for the house you have.
- 15:27And if God by some work in your life, because you have stewarded what he has had, you have
- 15:33not buried it, but you have invested it, he is giving you the opportunity to enjoy a little
- 15:37bit more, go for it.
- 15:42God is a capitalist.
- 15:45Like, how dare you?
- 15:50It's the truth.
- 15:52He owns it all.
- 15:54Everything on the earth is his.
- 15:56The cat on a thousand hills, your life, this table, the carpet that we're going to get
- 16:01rid of this year.
- 16:04It's all God's.
- 16:06He does as he pleases.
- 16:09That being said, keep your life free from the love of money and be content with what
- 16:14you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.
- 16:20Why would he say this?
- 16:23Because the reason why people hold on to money and the reason why people are not content
- 16:27from what they have is because they don't believe that Jesus is with them.
- 16:34If I don't have this to hold onto, one of these days, we have a fridge.
- 16:41It's in the back.
- 16:43It's dead.
- 16:45I'm throwing it away.
- 16:48Don't come to me and go, hey, we can use that.
- 16:50For what?
- 16:51A flower bed.
- 16:53I didn't think about taking the doors off.
- 16:58It's a raised flower bed.
- 16:59That might be, no, it's got to go away.
- 17:03We don't hold onto things because we can or we should.
- 17:06We hold onto things because they are necessary and that God is honored.
- 17:11I got this thing turning purple on me.
- 17:15That's cool.
- 17:16But look what it says.
- 17:18I will never leave you nor forsake you so we can confidently say, so that we can confidently
- 17:25say the Lord is my helper, my helper.
- 17:30I will not fear what can man do to me.
- 17:35When we are content, when we don't love money, when we live in a way that honors and glorifies
- 17:42him not only in our marriage, in our household, but among the people of God and as an example
- 17:50to strangers, we can say with confidence that the Lord is my helper.
- 17:55I will not fear what can man do to me.
- 17:59Nothing.
- 18:01You can take my life.
- 18:03You're not going to take me from eternity.
- 18:06This is going to die eventually anyway.
- 18:11That doesn't mean kill me.
- 18:14Because if you do, I'm going to haunt you.
- 18:18You know a pastor is a man of God by how he exemplifies Christ in the way he lives.
- 18:26Therefore, be imitators of God as beloved children and walk in love as Christ loved
- 18:32us and gave himself up for us a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God, Ephesians 5, 1 through
- 18:392.
- 18:40Ephesians 13, 7 through 9.
- 18:42Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God.
- 18:48It's one of the things when God had called me here, I wanted to make sure that we did
- 18:54and that was to honor Doug.
- 18:56Twenty years of faithful service and preaching here.
- 19:03The issue is you're not always going to agree with me either.
- 19:08That's God's man.
- 19:14And so am I by his grace.
- 19:19You honor the leader.
- 19:21You give respect to the pastors, to the men that God has given you.
- 19:25And I want to make sure you understand this too.
- 19:28There are five, going to be five, what's up Owen?
- 19:36Five men that God has given to help shepherd you.
- 19:41They are just as much shepherds as I am, whether they like it or not.
- 19:45But they are.
- 19:46They are faithful servants to the Lord.
- 19:49And though my responsibility is far greater, that does not diminish the authority of the
- 19:53elder upon their life.
- 19:55They are called and ordained just like I am.
- 19:59And they are faithful.
- 20:01Honor that.
- 20:02Remember your leader, especially those who speak the word of God.
- 20:06Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
- 20:13If you have a man of God who is faithful to the word of God, who lives in a way that you
- 20:18can see Christ clearly in their life, imitate their faith.
- 20:21Jesus tells that to Timothy.
- 20:23Timothy, follow me as I follow Christ.
- 20:29Verse eight, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
- 20:35He's not going to change.
- 20:37You think God doesn't know who are the good shepherds and who are the false shepherds?
- 20:42He knows.
- 20:43He's not taking off.
- 20:44He's not like, oh my gosh, I can't believe Stephen Furtick, Joe Osteen.
- 20:54Lord knows.
- 20:55It's not the end of the world.
- 20:58It is for them.
- 21:00God will hold them accountable.
- 21:03But when you have a man of God who is faithful to the word, who lives in such a way exemplifies
- 21:07Christ, who calls out the evildoer and exposes the false teachers, is committed to teaching
- 21:13you and shepherding you and giving you what you need to continue to grow in life and godliness,
- 21:18hold on.
- 21:20Take care of them.
- 21:22And I'm not saying that because my sabbatical is coming in June.
- 21:27It's because God is faithful to you.
- 21:30He loves you.
- 21:32He's given good care.
- 21:36Look what it says here.
- 21:38In doing so, in understanding, honoring those men who lead you, here's what happens.
- 21:46Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings.
- 21:50For it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods which have not benefited
- 21:58those who devote, those devoted to them.
- 22:01Here was, what the issue here was, these false teachers were saying, you must do, you can't
- 22:07eat this, you have to eat that.
- 22:10And there was these strange teachings and these diverse teachings of how to be a good
- 22:15Jew.
- 22:19And what the writer's saying here is, Jesus is the same.
- 22:22He hasn't changed.
- 22:24He's not moved by what you think you want.
- 22:28He does what he wants and what's best for you.
- 22:30And in doing so, be mindful that when you have good teachings, don't be led away from
- 22:37bad because of bad teachings.
- 22:42The old way was fleeting and temporary, but the new way, Christ, is permanent and eternal.
- 22:49Let not your hearts be troubled.
- 22:51Believe in God, believe also in me.
- 22:52In my Father's house are many rooms.
- 22:55If it were not so, I would have told you that I go to prepare a place for you.
- 23:00And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and I will take you to myself,
- 23:05that where I am, you may be also, and you know the way to where I'm going.
- 23:12John 14, one through four.
- 23:14In Hebrews 13, 10 through 14, it says this, we have an altar.
- 23:19Isn't that interesting?
- 23:22What is an altar?
- 23:26What altar is he talking about here?
- 23:30We got little ones here, they're getting excited.
- 23:33Well, Jesus is the altar.
- 23:36He is the brazen altar for sacrifice and he's the golden altar for intercession.
- 23:43He is our altar.
- 23:45We have an altar for which those who serve the tent have no right to eat.
- 23:51Here's what it means.
- 23:53Those who claim they know that this is the way to God, which is the works-based faith,
- 23:59right?
- 24:00Judaism, they have to do this.
- 24:03Guess what?
- 24:04They don't get to eat at the altar of Jesus.
- 24:08They don't get to partake in grace.
- 24:13They miss out on mercy.
- 24:18But what do they do?
- 24:20Well, verse 11 says, for the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy
- 24:26places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside of the camp.
- 24:31So here's what would happen.
- 24:33They would take a bull.
- 24:35This is the sacrifice of atonement.
- 24:38Each year they take a bull and a ram.
- 24:43A ram is a male adult lamb.
- 24:47And they would sacrifice and they would take the blood and they would walk into the holy
- 24:52of holies and they would sprinkle the seat, the ark, to cover the sin of the people.
- 25:03Then they would take the animals and they wouldn't burn them there right outside the
- 25:10door.
- 25:11They would take them outside of the tent, out, and burn them there.
- 25:16Why?
- 25:17Why are they eating this animal?
- 25:19Isn't that interesting?
- 25:25So next time you read Isaiah and you want to know why there's a ram in the thicket?
- 25:30Because that was the sin sacrifice.
- 25:37Now look what it says.
- 25:40So Jesus also suffered outside the gate.
- 25:45He also was placed in the fire.
- 25:50Not literal, figurative.
- 25:52He was consumed by the wrath of God.
- 25:58In the same way that the bull and the ram were consumed by the fire that was presented
- 26:07for God.
- 26:09Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.
- 26:18Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured.
- 26:25Let us go outside the camp and suffer with him.
- 26:29That's the idea.
- 26:31How many of you guys willing to suffer for Jesus?
- 26:33Many of you guys like, yeah.
- 26:35Would you really?
- 26:36I'm sorry.
- 26:37Look what it says in Romans 12 verse 1.
- 26:45Therefore I urge you brothers in the view of God's mercy to offer your bodies as a
- 26:50living sacrifice, holy and pleasing unto God for this is your reasonable act of worship.
- 27:01So we can go outside the camp and we can bear the reproach he endured by giving our lives
- 27:07as a sacrifice on the altar.
- 27:10Not of redemption, but the altar of sacrifice, of surrender.
- 27:18For here we have no lasting city.
- 27:21Do you hear that?
- 27:23We don't live for what we have here.
- 27:26We're not looking for the city to come here.
- 27:29We're looking for the city to come there.
- 27:33For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.
- 27:40I go to prepare a place for you.
- 27:42If it were not so, I would have told you that where I go, you will be also.
- 27:50Verse 15 through 16.
- 27:52In Psalm 34 verses 1 through 3 says this, I will bless the Lord at all times.
- 27:58His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
- 28:00My soul makes boast in the Lord.
- 28:02Let the humble hear and be glad.
- 28:04Oh, magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together.
- 28:12In 2 Timothy 4, 2 says this, preach the word.
- 28:17Be ready in season and out of season.
- 28:19Reprove, rebuke, exhort and complete with complete patience and teaching.
- 28:28You have a responsibility.
- 28:29I have a responsibility.
- 28:31Preach the word.
- 28:34Verse 15 and 16 says this, though or through him, then let us continually offer a sacrifice
- 28:40of praise to God.
- 28:42That is the fruit of the lips that acknowledge his name.
- 28:45You're like, pastor, why would you use Psalm 34 and 2 Timothy 4, 2?
- 28:52Because Psalm 34 and 2 Timothy 4, 2 is Hebrews 13, 15.
- 29:00Through him, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God.
- 29:06That is the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
- 29:09How can you acknowledge his name?
- 29:11How can you bring praise to his name?
- 29:13Preach the gospel.
- 29:19What is the greatest way to show love to a stranger?
- 29:22Preach the gospel.
- 29:25You can feed people all day long, but if you feed them and you don't give them the gospel,
- 29:30they're going to die with a full belly.
- 29:35What good is the food then?
- 29:38I just want to make sure that the Lord says, well done, my good and faithful servant.
- 29:46Giving food without the gospel is no use.
- 29:51It only makes them fool.
- 29:54Do both.
- 29:56Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have for such sacrifices are pleasing
- 30:04to God.
- 30:06Gentlemen, sitting at the steps of the temple, or right outside the temple, really, Peter
- 30:15and disciples walk by.
- 30:17Hey, you got any money?
- 30:24Nope.
- 30:26Not a silver and gold have I none, but what I do have I will give unto you.
- 30:32You notice he didn't give them any food.
- 30:35He gave them the one thing that mattered, everlasting water.
- 30:45So I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ,
- 30:52as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed.
- 30:56Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion,
- 31:04but willingly as God would have you, not for shameful gain, but eagerly, not domineering
- 31:11over those who are in charge, but being an example to the flock, 1 Peter 5, 1 through
- 31:193.
- 31:20This is to the elders.
- 31:22Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who
- 31:27labor in preaching and teaching.
- 31:30For the scripture says, you shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.
- 31:37You muzzle the ox when it's busy trying to give you food and plant your crops.
- 31:42He will not do it anymore.
- 31:47That's what it means here.
- 31:49Don't make it difficult for him.
- 31:52Work with him.
- 31:53That's the idea.
- 31:54You don't, you work with the ox and he will work for you.
- 31:59Why?
- 32:00Because the labor deserves his wages.
- 32:02First Timothy 5, 17 through 18.
- 32:04It's like, why, Lord, do I need to use that?
- 32:07It's because it's right here.
- 32:09In Hebrews 13, 17 through 19, obey your leaders and submit to them.
- 32:16This is not giving us the, this is not giving us a power to control you.
- 32:20It's not our job to dominate you.
- 32:22It's our job to lead you, to shepherd you, to care for you, to give you tools to be faithful
- 32:29in your living.
- 32:33So obey your leaders and submit to them, especially when, well, always when they're good to you.
- 32:41They're causing you to sin and you have a conversation with them, bad leaders.
- 32:50For they are keeping watch over your souls.
- 32:53That word souls means entire being.
- 32:57God has entrusted me as your pastor and God has entrusted these elders as your shepherds
- 33:05also to oversee your lives.
- 33:11We are held at a very high account as those who will give an account.
- 33:16God will give me, will hold me accountable to each and every life that he brings here.
- 33:22It's very serious.
- 33:24This is not a game.
- 33:30And me saying that, let them do this with joy and not with groaning.
- 33:36And I got to tell you, I haven't grown a bit in three years, going on three years.
- 33:41I love shepherding you.
- 33:44It's a joy.
- 33:46I adore it.
- 33:49And you make it easy.
- 33:51I got to tell you.
- 33:54Don't they John?
- 33:55Ben, our people make it easy.
- 33:59God is so good.
- 34:02Jodie's saying not for me.
- 34:07So let us elders do it with joy and not groaning.
- 34:12For that would be of no advantage to you if it was a struggle.
- 34:18So pray for us.
- 34:20So what Paul says here, pray for us for we are sure that we have a clear conscience,
- 34:27desiring to act honorably in all things.
- 34:29We want to live in such a way that we are honored, honoring you and honoring the Lord
- 34:35in all things.
- 34:37I urge you to come earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you sooner
- 34:43is what the writer says here.
- 34:46And then lastly, end of the chapter.
- 34:49For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
- 34:54Philippians 2.13.
- 34:56Are the responsibility of leaders.
- 34:59And I say this to every leader, every teacher.
- 35:04Hear this.
- 35:05Your responsibility is to equip the saints for the work of the ministry, for building
- 35:10up the body of Christ.
- 35:11That is your job.
- 35:13One job.
- 35:15Do that.
- 35:16Be faithful with the gospel.
- 35:18And this is what it says.
- 35:19That's Ephesians 4.12.
- 35:20Hebrews 13, 20-25.
- 35:21It's the nun.
- 35:25Now may the God of peace who brought you again from the dead, who brought, sorry, not you.
- 35:33Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd
- 35:39of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that
- 35:45you may do his will.
- 35:49It says you are to do his will, not yours.
- 35:54His working in us, that which is pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ, to whom
- 36:01be the glory forever and ever.
- 36:04Amen.
- 36:05I appeal to you, brothers, bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written to you
- 36:12briefly.
- 36:14You should know that our brother Timothy has been released with whom I shall see you if
- 36:22he comes soon.
- 36:23There's the answer.
- 36:24Who's the writer?
- 36:26Paul.
- 36:28May all your leaders and all the saints, those who come from Italy, send you greetings.
- 36:38Grace be with you all.
- 36:41What an amazing book.
- 36:44Go back, read it.
- 36:47There's a lot more there, and we will cover more in the years to come.
- 36:55But God is faithful to his people, isn't he?
- 36:58There's anything we learn from this entire book.
- 37:01Christ is the better.
- 37:05Christ is the better.
- 37:07Lord, I want to thank you so much for your word.
- 37:10Thank you for this amazing book.
- 37:12Thank you that we have opportunities to dig even more into this book and the truths that
- 37:18you have for us are inexhaustible, and we praise you.
- 37:21So Lord, I pray that you be with your people as we sing this last song and as we break
- 37:26bread together and get ready for our meeting.
- 37:28I pray you would give us wisdom.
- 37:30Let us keep the brotherhood, the love of the brotherhood to work for your goodness and
- 37:40your faithfulness to walk in your wisdom.
- 37:43And we praise you and thank you in Jesus' name.
- 37:45Amen.
