Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody? It
- 0:14Speaker 1: is Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan, And yes, we have
- 0:18Speaker 1: reached that time in the year.
- 0:21Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We are within a week of the Eagles reporting the
- 0:24Speaker 1: training camp, and as promised Adam and I, we like
- 0:27Speaker 1: to take this time deep into the summer, right before
- 0:29Speaker 1: training camp begins, to go through some of our favorite
- 0:32Speaker 1: training camp individuals. Memories of individuals. We call them. I
- 0:37Speaker 1: kind of came up with this name are Lee Heisman's,
- 0:39Speaker 1: right in honor of those who have performed the best
- 0:43Speaker 1: at training camp, which used to be at Lehigh. When
- 0:45Speaker 1: I got on the beat, it was Lehigh, I know,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and Adam knows, and most people know that they had
- 0:50Speaker 1: training camp in other places like Westchester before that, but
- 0:53Speaker 1: Lehigh is where it started for me. They of course
- 0:56Speaker 1: have gone moved it to Novacare, which is now Jeff
- 1:00Speaker 1: for some health complex. But what we're gonna do is
- 1:03Speaker 1: talk about these Lee Heisman's, or before me, Adam, the
- 1:08Speaker 1: guys on the beat, you know, like the rich Hoffmans
- 1:10Speaker 1: and the Phil Sheridan's, those guys who have been on
- 1:13Speaker 1: the beat for longer. They used to call it the
- 1:14Speaker 1: Nay Brown award of a wide receiver who just lit
- 1:19Speaker 1: it up in nineteen ninety nine as a rookie at
- 1:22Speaker 1: a training I think it was at North Carolina. North Carolina,
- 1:24Speaker 1: Yeah right, and then went on to have a very
- 1:28Speaker 1: very very modest career for the Eagles. And that's the
- 1:31Speaker 1: spirit of this is guys who lighted up in training
- 1:33Speaker 1: camp but then either don't make it or have very
- 1:35Speaker 1: modest careers after.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Nate Brown, his problem was he couldn't catch once
- 1:39Speaker 2: the regulars has started.
- 1:41Speaker 1: That's amazing to me.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he it. But it's why you gotta be careful
- 1:46Speaker 2: because when teams game plan against you and then the
- 1:49Speaker 2: lights come on, it's like those of us who play golf.
- 1:51Speaker 2: You know that you play golf. Yeah, I'm generally very
- 1:54Speaker 2: good at the driving range, but around a lot of people,
- 1:57Speaker 2: I don't do very well because there's a lot of people.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah, people are a lot of pressure.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Yeah, he just he was actually a fourth round pick
- 2:05Speaker 2: out of nineteen ninety nine. Now, what we like to
- 2:08Speaker 2: do is we like to take the undirected free agents
- 2:11Speaker 2: with the lower round picks, guys who never made it
- 2:15Speaker 2: with another team who or late round picks or undirectored
- 2:17Speaker 2: free agents. I have a good one for defense. We
- 2:18Speaker 2: do the Defensive Show now. By the way, in the
- 2:22Speaker 2: in the YouTube comments, please give us yours like folks,
- 2:25Speaker 2: you might have twenty guys that come to your mind.
- 2:27Speaker 2: If you went to Lehigh or for a lot of
- 2:29Speaker 2: the season ticket holders get to go to Novercare now
- 2:32Speaker 2: call the Jefferson Health Training Complex yep. Or west Schester.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I mentioned a couple of days ago Billy Hess without looking,
- 2:39Speaker 2: he might have been number eighty and it was in
- 2:41Speaker 2: the eighties. I thought he was number eighty out of
- 2:42Speaker 2: west Chester. He was had unbelievable quicks, right, and that's
- 2:48Speaker 2: that's what's got That's what got him. If I remember
- 2:52Speaker 2: our good friend Merril Rae calling Billy Has, Billy Has.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I was thinking of another good friend recently, our good
- 2:58Speaker 1: friend Billy Osbourne. I wonder if you was once a
- 3:01Speaker 1: Lee Heisman, you know, because he made the team. I
- 3:03Speaker 1: mean that out of he was a he was definitely
- 3:05Speaker 1: an underrated free agent at a pitch.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Well, yeah, he made the practice squad. I don't think
- 3:09Speaker 2: he made the fifty three.
- 3:10Speaker 1: That's what I meant. He made the practice squad. But
- 3:11Speaker 1: in order to do that, you got to stand out
- 3:13Speaker 1: and as an Yeah from from the great High School
- 3:18Speaker 1: of Wildwood Catholic, I believe, local hero down the Jersey Shore.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And then he went to pitt and was a great
- 3:23Speaker 1: athlete there. Uh he might have been a Lee Heisman
- 3:26Speaker 1: at one point.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Bill, Yeah, Billy is a South Jersey athletic legend multiple sports.
- 3:34Speaker 2: In fact, he might have done basketball, baseball, and football.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Was I know, it wasn't just football.
- 3:39Speaker 1: He did, he did. He was a multi sport athlete.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I think those were all one.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Billy. I loved Billy says in front of
- 3:45Speaker 2: the show. So yeah, Honestly, a lot of the guys
- 3:50Speaker 2: I have here are from like twenty ten on mm
- 3:54Speaker 2: hmm to now, but you could go for that.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I got a few from early in my be I mean,
- 4:03Speaker 1: I think you and I can both start with the
- 4:05Speaker 1: first like obvious Leheisman, a guy who came to Lehigh
- 4:09Speaker 1: and just tore it up so unexpectedly he wound up
- 4:12Speaker 1: making the team and having again a very modest career.
- 4:15Speaker 1: But it starts with Hank Basket right, Oh my god,
- 4:18Speaker 1: this guy was just if I could like bring everybody,
- 4:22Speaker 1: if I could write a Hollywood script about the first
- 4:26Speaker 1: two weeks of an NFL player joining a new team.
- 4:30Speaker 1: It would be the first two weeks of Hank Basket
- 4:33Speaker 1: as a Philadelphia Eagle. If I can just paint a
- 4:36Speaker 1: picture here, Adam, and you know this, like the Eagles
- 4:38Speaker 1: were not doing well at wide receiver in two thousand
- 4:42Speaker 1: and six. They had moved on from t o the
- 4:44Speaker 1: year before, right, they had drafted Reggie Brown and I
- 4:50Speaker 1: think he was entering year two at this point two
- 4:52Speaker 1: thousand and six. Okay, they go to they signed Dante
- 4:56Speaker 1: Stalworth as a free agent, but he's got this history,
- 4:59Speaker 1: I believe injuries at the time, very good explosive player
- 5:01Speaker 1: out of Tennessee. Who was with that, I believe the
- 5:04Speaker 1: Saints before that, right, yes, But after that, man, you're
- 5:09Speaker 1: talking about like from depth standpoint, you're talking about like
- 5:14Speaker 1: they had Billy McMullen. They had Todd Pinkston, who was
- 5:17Speaker 1: good player, but you know, you're starting to enter that downside.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I believe it. At that part of his career, they
- 5:23Speaker 1: just didn't have that much. And then they go and
- 5:26Speaker 1: so you would everybody expected the Eagles were going to
- 5:30Speaker 1: trade or acquire a wide receiver. They had Jason Van
- 5:33Speaker 1: by the way, just starting to come into his own.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Everybody expected they would acquire a wide receiver at him,
- 5:38Speaker 1: but I don't think people thought they were going to
- 5:40Speaker 1: trade a wide receiver for a wide receiver. And that's
- 5:44Speaker 1: what they did, trading Billy McMullen, who was an underperforming
- 5:47Speaker 1: I want to say, third or fourth round pick out
- 5:49Speaker 1: of Virginia to bring in this guy that nobody ever
- 5:51Speaker 1: heard of.
- 5:52Speaker 2: So Hank Basket it gets traded straight out for Billy McMullen.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Billy McMullen was out of Virginia, big body, didn't run
- 6:00Speaker 2: all that well. Hank is a pretty good athlete, good size,
- 6:05Speaker 2: not the strongest guy in the world. But I don't remember,
- 6:10Speaker 2: and I'm going back. My first training camp was like
- 6:12Speaker 2: an O one HM and this clue the arya Rowans
- 6:16Speaker 2: obviously was. It was like mesmerizing what we saw in
- 6:20Speaker 2: that for training camp with McNab, but for any non developed, developed,
- 6:28Speaker 2: multi year pro player, like you know, a draft pick
- 6:30Speaker 2: or a pro bowler. He was a phenomenon. Circus catch
- 6:35Speaker 2: after circs catch, no one could cover him. They try to,
- 6:38Speaker 2: they try to hit him hard, they just he would
- 6:39Speaker 2: he jump over him. So I remember running to Ron
- 6:41Speaker 2: Jeorgskin I go jows what this is. Before I became
- 6:45Speaker 2: a little bit smarter on the way value players in
- 6:47Speaker 2: training camps. When I go my tour said you've been there,
- 6:51Speaker 2: raw jaws will go a lot because he goes. I says,
- 6:54Speaker 2: it really goes. It's real because you you can't do
- 6:57Speaker 2: stuff like this. It's one thing if you did a
- 6:59Speaker 2: couple of practice is then you just go, ah, I don't
- 7:02Speaker 2: believe it. But practice after practice it every practice and
- 7:05Speaker 2: he's attacking it. And he knew as a former und
- 7:07Speaker 2: drafted freegent he was actually traded to the Eagles. He's
- 7:10Speaker 2: got to prove himself. And it was I mean, aj
- 7:14Speaker 2: Brown here was obviously dominant, too, is dominant. Davante's always good,
- 7:21Speaker 2: Dante Smith is always good. But the circus type of catches,
- 7:25Speaker 2: the contested catches winning just about every time, no matter
- 7:28Speaker 2: what kind of coveragure was. It was kind of unfathomable
- 7:32Speaker 2: that anyone could do something like this, and then you
- 7:34Speaker 2: throw in the fact that he wasn't even drafted by
- 7:36Speaker 2: the Vikings. He was signed as a UDFA. It was
- 7:39Speaker 2: some of it was one of those I wish I
- 7:41Speaker 2: was doing like TV where I could like or doing
- 7:44Speaker 2: some sort of like play by play a practice, like, folks,
- 7:47Speaker 2: this is what we just saw, you know, just to
- 7:50Speaker 2: recap it. And now, if I remember right, this is
- 7:53Speaker 2: where you officially beat, right, because you were a backup
- 7:56Speaker 2: guy right before that.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Two thousand and six was my first as the beat.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Two thousand and five I joined as a GA. I
- 8:02Speaker 1: think I joined as the season started when I started
- 8:05Speaker 1: working at the Wilmington News Journal, so they were Lee
- 8:08Speaker 1: High had already taken place. So yeah, two thousand and
- 8:11Speaker 1: six is my first foray into covering the Lehigh and
- 8:16Speaker 1: going up there and tracking up there and doing all
- 8:18Speaker 1: that stuff. So that that was and you know, that
- 8:23Speaker 1: was a turbulent time for the Eagles. Really, the post
- 8:27Speaker 1: to era for the Eagles was filled with so many
- 8:30Speaker 1: first round holdouts, so many injuries, so many players complaining
- 8:33Speaker 1: about their contracts two years in to an extension, because
- 8:37Speaker 1: that's you know, they used to do that back then.
- 8:40Speaker 1: There was just always news and you know, obviously front
- 8:44Speaker 1: office things going on. Andy had power. They were starting
- 8:47Speaker 1: to like you could tell the organization was starting to
- 8:49Speaker 1: feel sheepish about Andy having as much power because some
- 8:52Speaker 1: of the drafts weren't going as well. Tom Tom Heckert
- 8:57Speaker 1: was his right hand man, but at that time, how
- 9:00Speaker 1: he's rising up the chain little by little. So there
- 9:03Speaker 1: was just so much going on with the Eagles, And
- 9:05Speaker 1: you know, I mentioned Pinkston, him him suffering the Achilles
- 9:09Speaker 1: tear in two thousand and five and then not coming
- 9:12Speaker 1: back in two thousand and sixty. K he was there
- 9:14Speaker 1: in camp, but he just you could tell he was
- 9:16Speaker 1: not what he once was. The Achilles tear really took
- 9:19Speaker 1: a lot out of him, and that's what left the
- 9:21Speaker 1: Eagles in such a dire straits at wide receiver. Like
- 9:24Speaker 1: I said, it was Reggie in the post t era,
- 9:27Speaker 1: it was Reggie Brown. They had added Dante Stalwart, they
- 9:30Speaker 1: had Greg Lewis. They were hoping Pinkston could come back.
- 9:34Speaker 1: He really was struggling to come back from that. And
- 9:36Speaker 1: then Bill Curtis, Kevin Curtis was seven, He wasn't there yet,
- 9:41Speaker 1: but I'm saying, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean it
- 9:44Speaker 1: it was time.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, he Kevin mc I mean, Kevin Curtis, you
- 9:50Speaker 2: go a number of years, right, Reggie Brown was the
- 9:52Speaker 2: fine player for a while. Ye kind of feel that
- 9:54Speaker 2: one to Tampa Bay.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Bill mcmon was a third round pick. As a matter
- 9:58Speaker 2: of fact, he had on great training camp. Yeah, like
- 10:02Speaker 2: he just if the life finally went on. Well, great's
- 10:04Speaker 2: probably too strong a good training camp, but they still
- 10:07Speaker 2: trade him up at the end of his rookie contractors
- 10:09Speaker 2: last year, they traded him to the Vikings, and it
- 10:14Speaker 2: was just one of these things where you really wondered.
- 10:17Speaker 2: But then once they got to the regular season, very pedestrian,
- 10:21Speaker 2: nothing special. It just goes to show you game planning, Like, yeah,
- 10:28Speaker 2: you're you're definitely gonna you're running your place in training camp, right,
- 10:34Speaker 2: but you're not game planning. That's the difference, right, And
- 10:38Speaker 2: once the game planning came about for billing for Hank Basket,
- 10:42Speaker 2: he became virtually non factor. Right.
- 10:44Speaker 1: So a couple of weeks ago, go buy in camp, right,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and then Andy realizes his top three on his depth
- 10:50Speaker 1: chart are basically Reggie Brown Dante Stalworth and at three
- 10:55Speaker 1: you're looking at Greg Lewis. A nice story as an
- 10:58Speaker 1: undrafted free agent, but not necessarily what you want as
- 11:01Speaker 1: your number three receiver. Your number four receiver with McMullen
- 11:04Speaker 1: really not performing, is Jason Levont Who's a rookie. Who's
- 11:08Speaker 1: a rookie who's a slot receiver. He's really a special teamer.
- 11:10Speaker 1: At that point, he hasn't become Jason Levant yet. So
- 11:13Speaker 1: that's when Andy decides I need something at receiver and
- 11:16Speaker 1: he flips McMullen to his to the Vikings where his
- 11:20Speaker 1: buddy and former OC Brad Childers is the and in
- 11:24Speaker 1: return he gets Hank Basket right, and from day one,
- 11:29Speaker 1: Hank Basket is pulling balls.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Out of the air, you know what I mean.
- 11:35Speaker 1: So the thing about everybody obviously had to do their
- 11:38Speaker 1: research on Hancott, like who is this guy? He wents
- 11:40Speaker 1: a University of Mexico. Apparently he was a really good athlete.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I think he was a track and field guy. In
- 11:46Speaker 1: so we knew he had like athletic abilities that probably
- 11:48Speaker 1: were better than what Billy McMullen were offering. And oh boy,
- 11:53Speaker 1: did those show up in the first six or seven
- 11:55Speaker 1: practices I before Randy like we use the term lost,
- 12:00Speaker 1: like this guy was mossing DB's in practice. And then
- 12:04Speaker 1: I had had to be like three or four in
- 12:06Speaker 1: at him where I was looking at talking to some
- 12:08Speaker 1: of the other beats and were like, this guy really
- 12:11Speaker 1: did the Eagles Did Andy just totally hoodwink his.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Good Buddy, I mean it was incredible. And Hank Basket,
- 12:19Speaker 2: I'll say this about me. He didn't get up. He
- 12:21Speaker 2: didn't put up very many receptions. But the thing about
- 12:24Speaker 2: him in six his first year with Eagles, almost every
- 12:27Speaker 2: catch was big, only twenty two receptions, but for over
- 12:30Speaker 2: twenty one yards per catch.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Right, that's what he was.
- 12:33Speaker 2: He downfield contested catch guy, that's what he was.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Completely.
- 12:37Speaker 2: The second year only sixteen, the third year thirty three.
- 12:40Speaker 2: For now his yards per catch went down. Buddy had
- 12:43Speaker 2: more catches he thirty three for four to forty thirteen
- 12:46Speaker 2: point three and then that that was pretty much it.
- 12:50Speaker 2: He would he didn't do well for the Eagle. He
- 12:52Speaker 2: moved on and then went to the Colts and did
- 12:55Speaker 2: very little after after that. And he actually had a
- 12:57Speaker 2: second time with the Eagles, but didn't go well and
- 13:00Speaker 2: that was it for him. But it was one of
- 13:03Speaker 2: the best unexpected training camp performances I've seen in my career.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I because when I go to camps, I don't go
- 13:10Speaker 2: to I don't go non Eagles, I don't go for
- 13:12Speaker 2: more two days. I just don't. There's no reason to it.
- 13:15Speaker 2: So because I've gone been in more practices to the
- 13:18Speaker 2: Eagles than anyone else. I'm trying to think of, just
- 13:23Speaker 2: were the any quarterbacks you saw, like where you weren't expecting.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Quarterbacks is a tough one because they either stand out
- 13:30Speaker 1: and make the team or they're just not that they're not.
- 13:34Speaker 1: You know, we've talked a little bit in the past,
- 13:36Speaker 1: maybe for new listeners about Trent Edwards, who came to
- 13:39Speaker 1: the Eagles. I forget what year I want to say,
- 13:42Speaker 1: and eleven twelve maybe and was terrible like he had
- 13:48Speaker 1: been with I want to say, the Ravens. He was
- 13:50Speaker 1: a quarterback out of Stanford. He wasn't much of an athlete.
- 13:53Speaker 1: He was right right, Yeah. Wasn't he a first round
- 13:57Speaker 1: Was he a high pick? First or a second round picking?
- 14:00Speaker 2: Look, I don't remember. I know it's the first or
- 14:03Speaker 2: second round. I just don't remember.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he was. He was a guy who
- 14:07Speaker 1: could supposed to be an accurate quarterback and this guy
- 14:10Speaker 1: could not hit the broad side of a barn. This
- 14:14Speaker 1: is twenty twelve in training. In fact, I'm not training
- 14:17Speaker 1: to get ot a.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Third round pack of the Bills. Und third round pick
- 14:20Speaker 2: of the Bills.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I thought he was sure to get cut in OTAs
- 14:24Speaker 1: and I can actually remember a drill. It was a
- 14:28Speaker 1: quarterback drill with him. Man, who are the other quarterbacks?
- 14:32Speaker 1: Maybe was Nick Foles two twelve, it was his rookie year, right,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and then maybe Vick Right. They're they're doing this footwork
- 14:38Speaker 1: and net drill where you run around a couple of
- 14:41Speaker 1: cones and then you fire it into a net. You
- 14:42Speaker 1: run around a couple and you fired a net. Right,
- 14:45Speaker 1: He would fire it everywhere but the net. But it
- 14:48Speaker 1: was just I think Matt Barkley might have also been.
- 14:50Speaker 2: In too, by the way.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so I'm getting getting a few guys confused.
- 14:55Speaker 1: But he couldn't hit anything, and I couldn't believe it,
- 14:59Speaker 1: you know, I'm there. There was some talk that he
- 15:01Speaker 1: had made Andy never confirmed it.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I think it was I remember this.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think he had something done on his
- 15:07Speaker 1: shoulder that either either or something done or something that
- 15:09Speaker 1: kept him out. But he couldn't hit the broad side
- 15:12Speaker 1: of the barn at him, and it was almost getting
- 15:14Speaker 1: It was almost a daily thing, and I felt bad
- 15:17Speaker 1: for the guy. But then came training camp. You're right,
- 15:21Speaker 1: kaf goes on team because he wound up pushing Kafka
- 15:23Speaker 1: out of that job. It wound up being Foles in
- 15:25Speaker 1: Kafka who I mean Foles and Trent Edwards who won
- 15:28Speaker 1: the job out of training camp because all of a sudden,
- 15:30Speaker 1: the preseason games came and it was boom banged back.
- 15:33Speaker 1: He saw her to see the accuracy come back the rhythm.
- 15:37Speaker 1: What happened was Kafka broke his hand, so he was
- 15:40Speaker 1: sort of taken out of a lot of the competition.
- 15:43Speaker 1: And while that happened happened, Edwards turned it on and
- 15:46Speaker 1: he became this like holy gap and then he wound
- 15:48Speaker 1: up making it. But he really wasn't It wasn't fun.
- 15:52Speaker 1: I don't even think he was with the team the
- 15:53Speaker 1: whole year.
- 15:54Speaker 2: That year, he was, but he would get he would
- 15:57Speaker 2: They would cut him after around the before the draft
- 16:00Speaker 2: twenty thirteen the next year. But yeah, trying to actually
- 16:03Speaker 2: I ran into the comment he's in the sports space
- 16:05Speaker 2: maybe like wearables or something. It's like three or four
- 16:08Speaker 2: years ago maybe, But yeah, although recently I would tell
- 16:13Speaker 2: you as a six round pick, Tanner McKee had first
- 16:15Speaker 2: training camp was not very good. What happened is he
- 16:17Speaker 2: did great in the preseason. It looked great, and then
- 16:20Speaker 2: the next all of a sudden to the next off
- 16:23Speaker 2: season he found this mobility. I'm like, where the hell
- 16:25Speaker 2: did this come from? And then the arm strength was
- 16:28Speaker 2: just like wow. And he also had a very good
- 16:30Speaker 2: training camp where you know, here's your next backup, and
- 16:32Speaker 2: that's been the case. But yeah, I know GJ. Kinney
- 16:36Speaker 2: might remember him. He's a pretty good athlete. Didn't have
- 16:38Speaker 2: much of an arm but he's a lot of these
- 16:41Speaker 2: quarterbacks every once in a while look great in a
- 16:43Speaker 2: practice and you go, oh wow, it's interesting that they can't.
- 16:45Speaker 2: They just can't sustain it. But let's move on to
- 16:49Speaker 2: another position.
- 16:50Speaker 1: How about we go to the running back? Okay, yeah,
- 16:54Speaker 1: running back? Who Actually, I'm going to drop this now
- 16:57Speaker 1: on Friday on the inside the Birth Platform, you will
- 17:01Speaker 1: see this running back as the final guest of our
- 17:05Speaker 1: Lee High Legend series with Andrew de Checo. His name
- 17:08Speaker 1: is Henry Josie and this guy is the epitome of
- 17:13Speaker 1: a Lee Heisman. Now, technically he was a Novacare stand
- 17:18Speaker 1: out because they were this was in the Chip Kelly
- 17:20Speaker 1: era and they were at the Novercare complex at the time.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I probably have to come up with a cool like
- 17:25Speaker 1: Novacare novelty. I don't know, but we're gonna stick with
- 17:29Speaker 1: Lee Heisman. Adam. This guy was incredible as a running back.
- 17:36Speaker 1: He just in the preseason games was unbelievable. Now, the
- 17:40Speaker 1: reason why he's gonna be on Andrew is because the
- 17:43Speaker 1: biggest thing about Henry Josie that I can remember is
- 17:46Speaker 1: that when the Eagles cut him, sports talk radio went
- 17:50Speaker 1: a buzz. I mean, people were mad at Chip. They
- 17:53Speaker 1: thought that Chip had just cut the next Adrian Peterson.
- 17:56Speaker 1: They couldn't believe that Henry Josie didn't make the fifty three.
- 18:01Speaker 1: And it turned out that the Eagles were right, the
- 18:03Speaker 1: NFL was right. He didn't really have a very promising career,
- 18:06Speaker 1: and he talked he has a great story about it
- 18:09Speaker 1: and about how those fans still reach out to him
- 18:13Speaker 1: that he tells to Andrew to check on. That'll be auful.
- 18:15Speaker 2: That's that's like they would remember, Well, that's incredible. Yeah.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I So here's my all right, So he's I don't
- 18:22Speaker 2: know what do we know what year it was of the.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Check I think it was the first year. I think
- 18:28Speaker 1: it was twenty thirteen. I can check really out.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, so you know we're we're covering the story
- 18:34Speaker 2: back then, and he's he's killing it. Super explosive, interesting
- 18:40Speaker 2: running style, high knees. Yeah, kind of like Roger Craig
- 18:44Speaker 2: a little bit for those of you are old enough.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Twenty fourteen by the way.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Okay, he was unbelievable. Fol looked great. But I got
- 18:53Speaker 2: tipped off that he was not going to make it,
- 18:56Speaker 2: and I double check because I thought this is ridiculous.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Like I didn't, I didn't. I know he had an
- 19:01Speaker 2: injury history with his knees, but I didn't know it
- 19:02Speaker 2: was the severe. So I got the word. I broke
- 19:07Speaker 2: the news. I put on Twitter, and I'm like, people
- 19:12Speaker 2: are calling me names, like really like out of blocks
- 19:14Speaker 2: of people, like they're they're they're blaming me, like you know,
- 19:16Speaker 2: it's your fault, You're you're putting out false information. I'm like,
- 19:19Speaker 2: I'm just telling I'm trying to educate you, right, because
- 19:22Speaker 2: I was curious, like the fans or why the how
- 19:24Speaker 2: you cut this guy? Uh? The person in the front
- 19:26Speaker 2: office told me that they were so worried about his
- 19:30Speaker 2: knees that they just got ahead of it. They knew
- 19:33Speaker 2: he had no chance.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Right, he had a really bad knee injury. I believe
- 19:37Speaker 1: he talked to Andrew about it in at jury where
- 19:41Speaker 1: he went.
- 19:41Speaker 2: I believe I even know where he went.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, yeah, well I think it involved it might
- 19:46Speaker 1: have been an ACL tear. And this is you know,
- 19:48Speaker 1: this is like years ago, over a decade ago, so
- 19:52Speaker 1: it wasn't as easy to come back from those kind
- 19:54Speaker 1: of things.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Yeah he he he tells me like thirty five years old. Yeah,
- 20:00Speaker 2: it's uh, he just he bounced around a little bit.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Then when he bounced around that season and then went
- 20:06Speaker 2: to the CFL for two years. Then I was in
- 20:09Speaker 2: one of the satellite leagues. That was it. Yeah, he looked.
- 20:11Speaker 2: They're right when it comes to medical you're not always
- 20:14Speaker 2: going to be right. Like with every blue moon, there's
- 20:21Speaker 2: a there's an a Kobe Dean which defies medical science,
- 20:25Speaker 2: like you could come back from back to back of
- 20:27Speaker 2: the worst injuries. Let's frank full rupture and turn pro
- 20:31Speaker 2: teller tendon like this doesn't know human being could come
- 20:34Speaker 2: back from this right? Well one did you know, Henry Josie.
- 20:37Speaker 2: They just felt like no, you know, the person I
- 20:40Speaker 2: spoke to said, no, you don't understand, like we know
- 20:42Speaker 2: medically he's never going to hold up, which is going
- 20:44Speaker 2: to get ahead of it and help him out here. Yeah,
- 20:46Speaker 2: I didn't. I just because when you can only go
- 20:49Speaker 2: back what they're telling you, and they're telling you the truth,
- 20:51Speaker 2: why they cut them.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean he went to two other teams.
- 20:55Speaker 1: He went to two other teams that year, and none
- 20:57Speaker 1: of them he was just on practice school.
- 20:59Speaker 2: I called, so most of me said hey, yeah, I said, hey,
- 21:02Speaker 2: this is what I was told. I'm sure you know
- 21:04Speaker 2: his background and he never made it. But it was
- 21:09Speaker 2: one of those few that I didn't agree with it,
- 21:12Speaker 2: but I understood and I accepted it because it wasn't
- 21:15Speaker 2: like that I was the guy was a friend of mine, right,
- 21:17Speaker 2: I just felt like he was such a great training
- 21:19Speaker 2: camp story. There's another guy that I would get to
- 21:21Speaker 2: know and that deserves more time because that one was
- 21:25Speaker 2: more that was more involved.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah, right, it was. Listen, it's really hard sometimes we
- 21:31Speaker 1: get on fans for like falling in love with a guy,
- 21:33Speaker 1: whether it like like a Paul Turner, who you know,
- 21:35Speaker 1: that's another wide receiver we could talk about. Yeah, it's
- 21:39Speaker 1: clear as day that this person is either feasting off
- 21:42Speaker 1: of going up against the third string, or they're short,
- 21:47Speaker 1: or they're not fat like you could tell it's not
- 21:48Speaker 1: going to translate. But this one was hard. I got
- 21:51Speaker 1: to admit, he was just so dynamic in the preseason. Now,
- 21:57Speaker 1: if you go back and look retrospect, it was probably
- 21:59Speaker 1: because he was through enormous holes, but he was so
- 22:03Speaker 1: dynamic that it was hard just to understand what he
- 22:06Speaker 1: didn't do right to make the team. Turner, No, no, no,
- 22:11Speaker 1: I'm saying I was giving Paul Turners an example of
- 22:13Speaker 1: people who kind of over overdo it because they think
- 22:15Speaker 1: some guy had a great training camp. But with Henry Josie,
- 22:19Speaker 1: I can understand why people got really into that. There's
- 22:23Speaker 1: no reason or something good there.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Yeah, performance wise there was no reason to but medically
- 22:27Speaker 2: that he was a medical reject is what they call him.
- 22:29Speaker 2: They just could they they couldn't keep him. They were
- 22:31Speaker 2: worried about the condition of his knees. So they were right,
- 22:34Speaker 2: Paul Turner, let's get to him. Then the other guy. Yeah,
- 22:37Speaker 2: So Paul Turner was a guy just literally caught everything.
- 22:40Speaker 2: But I knew because what I, what you and I
- 22:43Speaker 2: try to do is we try to get information on players.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Every player that the Eagles bring in, whether they're drafted
- 22:49Speaker 2: or not, just get up a working idea of what
- 22:51Speaker 2: they are and who they are. And we were told
- 22:53Speaker 2: the guy can't run, but he catches everything. He's going
- 22:55Speaker 2: to have a problem getting open on his own. He's
- 22:58Speaker 2: not going to make it. And I remember being told that, like,
- 23:01Speaker 2: let's say it's like the beginning of training camp. I'm like, okay,
- 23:03Speaker 2: because he had a great OTAs and this dude is
- 23:07Speaker 2: like pile up catches, pile up catches, short area, stop
- 23:10Speaker 2: and start, good hands, thinner build, but he's catching everything.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, wow, okay, we'll see what happens. He's
- 23:17Speaker 2: just not stopping. I don't know what his preseason numbers were,
- 23:19Speaker 2: but I just remember talking to someone, you know, closest situation, said, no,
- 23:23Speaker 2: he's not he's no chance, can't get open. But wait
- 23:26Speaker 2: a minute, he's getting open to practices, dude, that's not
- 23:28Speaker 2: that's that's practice. Yeah, this is the NFL man. When
- 23:32Speaker 2: when the light's going, he's not gonna be able to
- 23:34Speaker 2: get open. And he couldn't. That's exactly what happened. He kept,
- 23:36Speaker 2: he kept, he was on it. He was brought back
- 23:38Speaker 2: a number of times. But here they look, these people,
- 23:42Speaker 2: they breathe football, they know it They're not always going
- 23:44Speaker 2: to be right, but this is this is They nailed
- 23:47Speaker 2: this one. They absolute nailed this one.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans. Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 23:52Speaker 1: long lines, We've all been there, But when it comes
- 23:55Speaker 1: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 23:59Speaker 1: the dispensary for sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly,

- 24:43Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 24:46Speaker 1: one and up.
- 24:47Speaker 2: But the next guy, wait, I just.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Want to go back, really thick because I found something,
- 24:51Speaker 1: all right, I found the twenty fourteen NFL preseason rushing stats. Okay,
- 24:56Speaker 1: Henry Josie had He was the second leading rusher in
- 24:59Speaker 1: the preseason, behind a guy named Lorenzo talia Farrell. Okay,
- 25:03Speaker 1: Lorenzo talia Farrell at two hundred and fifty three yards.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Josie had two twenty five. But Josie had thirty four
- 25:09Speaker 1: carries and taller Ferriol had sixty six carries. Joes averaged
- 25:12Speaker 1: six point sixty two yards per carry on thirty four carries,
- 25:18Speaker 1: had six points.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Geez, six point six. Like I said, from a former standpoint,
- 25:23Speaker 2: he had no reason to cut him. But they ane
- 25:25Speaker 2: more else about us. By the way, Paul Turner did
- 25:28Speaker 2: play in the NFL for four games with the Eagles.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's funny, remember why, I mean they had DG.
- 25:35Speaker 1: They started the year with DGB. He was not playing well.
- 25:38Speaker 1: They were having a real problem with the past. This
- 25:40Speaker 1: is what wentz his rookie year right two.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Ye. Yeah, he's a slat.
- 25:44Speaker 1: They finally added him because they had a few banged
- 25:46Speaker 1: up players in the position, and he did all right.
- 25:49Speaker 2: By the way, it's funny about his numbers. If you
- 25:52Speaker 2: look at his row numbers, you go, wait a minute,
- 25:53Speaker 2: you said he can't run. It was only nine catches, folks,
- 25:56Speaker 2: but for one twenty six fourteen yards per catch. But
- 25:59Speaker 2: he trust me, he's a nine point five to ten
- 26:02Speaker 2: yards per catch guy in the NFL. He ever played
- 26:04Speaker 2: in it full time. But it was just yeah, it
- 26:07Speaker 2: was a nice story. But again, you know your job
- 26:10Speaker 2: as a reporter to tell the truth of that biased
- 26:11Speaker 2: And I was like, okay, this is this is what
- 26:13Speaker 2: I was told, and it was true. They were right,
- 26:15Speaker 2: but the next one they were wrong in that the
- 26:18Speaker 2: guy would have a very very successful CFL career. In fact,
- 26:21Speaker 2: he would win a great Cup. That's our friend, Rashid
- 26:23Speaker 2: Bailey with the new Rashid, we need to have him on.
- 26:27Speaker 2: He's a wonderful guy. So what Rashid told me was
- 26:30Speaker 2: that he's either Chip Keller. Ed Manowitz told him, well,
- 26:35Speaker 2: we'll get to what he did in trading give but
- 26:36Speaker 2: he had a great preseason training kit, led the Eagles
- 26:39Speaker 2: in receiving yards in preseason and I don't have either
- 26:43Speaker 2: twenty thirteen to twenty fourteen. I don't know what year
- 26:45Speaker 2: it was. So anyway, he thought we thought, you know,
- 26:49Speaker 2: we all thought he was gonna make it, and you know,
- 26:53Speaker 2: he got the call and you know, I put the
- 26:56Speaker 2: information out and what I was Rashid told me that
- 26:59Speaker 2: they told him don't go anywhere, stay close. You know.
- 27:02Speaker 2: He went to del Valleys from Philly. Yep, he said,
- 27:05Speaker 2: don't go anywhere. We're gonna wait. You know, after after
- 27:08Speaker 2: everything clears out from the fifty three and waiver, clams
- 27:12Speaker 2: will bring it back to the practice squad. I don't
- 27:15Speaker 2: think they ever. I'd have to check how we would
- 27:17Speaker 2: bring him back. You how he got control back. But
- 27:20Speaker 2: I don't remember them get put him on the practice squad.
- 27:23Speaker 2: They may have done it. I don't know, but I
- 27:25Speaker 2: just know this. He earned a roster spot and uh,
- 27:28Speaker 2: to its credit, he learned that it was a business.
- 27:32Speaker 2: But his agent got him a good job. It might
- 27:34Speaker 2: have been with Argos Toronto Argonauts. I don't remember, but yeah, maybe,
- 27:39Speaker 2: but either I don't know. He won at least one
- 27:41Speaker 2: Great Cup, might have won to more than one. But
- 27:43Speaker 2: he did really well there, like really well. He became
- 27:45Speaker 2: a player.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Man awesome, like you mentioned, awesome guy.
- 27:49Speaker 2: He's got a he has a podcast. I know he
- 27:51Speaker 2: just had who the hell did Oh he had a
- 27:54Speaker 2: bg on. I know that, but he might he may
- 27:56Speaker 2: have had some you know, not that PG sound a
- 27:58Speaker 2: big name, but he might have had a big time
- 27:59Speaker 2: offensive guy on. I saw it. But so what happened
- 28:03Speaker 2: was he just because he's well built for a guy
- 28:06Speaker 2: that wasn't a speed demon. You know, he wasn't a
- 28:08Speaker 2: fast guy. But he understood. He put it like a
- 28:12Speaker 2: zillion catches at Delval like he just the numbers were insane,
- 28:17Speaker 2: but he understood how to get open, how to be physical,
- 28:19Speaker 2: to get open and run after the catch. He just
- 28:21Speaker 2: he was great in training camp. There was no reason
- 28:23Speaker 2: for them to cut him, but they had a numbers
- 28:25Speaker 2: problem and they weren't truthful with him, right he That
- 28:29Speaker 2: one bothered me because he earned it. And it's just
- 28:35Speaker 2: I that one. Look. They actually turned out to be
- 28:38Speaker 2: a mistake because he made it when again he made
- 28:41Speaker 2: in the CFL. You could debate how when we get
- 28:44Speaker 2: to the fussive show, there's a CFL refugee who we
- 28:47Speaker 2: talk about who it was a great story until he
- 28:50Speaker 2: got hurt. But yeah, Rashid should have made it. He he
- 28:53Speaker 2: should have made it with Egles. Oh well, good story though,
- 28:55Speaker 2: good friends.
- 28:56Speaker 1: He want another good story about twenty seventeen preseason. There
- 28:59Speaker 1: were about three Eagle that finished in the top twelve.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Here in receptions, you would never guess who those three
- 29:06Speaker 1: Eagles are at twenty seventeen.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Yeah, Rashid was, because Rashid was much earlier than that.
- 29:11Speaker 1: No, he was that he was with Cleveland and then
- 29:13Speaker 1: came to Philadelphia.
- 29:14Speaker 2: H I No, he can't know. But Rashid was first
- 29:15Speaker 2: with the Eagles during the Chip era. Yeah, then they
- 29:18Speaker 2: cut him. Then he came back again.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Right right, he came back.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Then how he cut him? They he just didn't make it. Wait,
- 29:23Speaker 2: but what did he? Yeah, I don't know. Twenty seventeen
- 29:25Speaker 2: pre season, I don't know.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Mac Hollins with thirteen catches that year for a hundred.
- 29:31Speaker 2: He hasn't retired. It's unbelievable.
- 29:33Speaker 1: This guy rights with Anti Lee. This guy next guy
- 29:37Speaker 1: is an Anti Lee Heisman he had he would be
- 29:39Speaker 1: if whatever, if we did like the worst player in
- 29:41Speaker 1: the training camp, Daniel.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Pumphrey Donelle Well, he was terrible.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Trading patches for seventy two yards there was only five
- 29:48Speaker 1: and a half for carry. He was a dump off.
- 29:50Speaker 1: King uh In that that year and then we got
- 29:53Speaker 1: Bryce Tregg's twelve cats.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Yeah you could run, you could run. Yeah.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Now now currently an agent, I believe it was, yeah right, yeah,
- 30:02Speaker 1: So those are the three Hollins. That's how funny is that?
- 30:04Speaker 2: Just Mackett run that. Look he won a super Bowl
- 30:07Speaker 2: with Eagles. He just made the Super Bowl with New England.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Yep.
- 30:11Speaker 2: So to end this, no, no, that's it, Josie basket,
- 30:16Speaker 2: anyone else you want to add?
- 30:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll add. In twenty thirteen, Greg Sallas was, Yes,
- 30:23Speaker 1: he had. In fact, he had like seven catchers for
- 30:25Speaker 1: one hundred and ten yards in the preseason. He was
- 30:27Speaker 1: he had been claimed off waivers from the Patriots the
- 30:29Speaker 1: year before. Uh, and they released Marty Gilliard. I remember this.
- 30:33Speaker 1: They released Marty Gilliard to make room for Greg Salas
- 30:36Speaker 1: and all of us. I guess the beat guys were
- 30:38Speaker 1: synegor are, like, what are we doing? Just rearranging the
- 30:40Speaker 1: furniture of that.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Titanic yere pretty much.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Sallas wound up fitting in pretty well. It made a
- 30:46Speaker 1: ton of contested catches. He's not not a huge guy.
- 30:49Speaker 1: He's like six foot one.
- 30:51Speaker 2: He's a slot receiver.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I remember, yeah, slot receiver. But for whatever reason. He
- 30:54Speaker 1: was going over the top making a ton of catches.
- 30:57Speaker 1: But the Eagles kept their draft pick said they kept
- 31:00Speaker 1: BJ Cunningham over him, which did not work out. They
- 31:05Speaker 1: did signs with a practice squad, but then the Jets
- 31:07Speaker 1: claimed him off the practice squad and then actually played
- 31:10Speaker 1: him that year. Greg Sallas, but he is a guy
- 31:13Speaker 1: who was making highlight reel catches.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Nothing right.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Michael Gasperson the name from the past that my recollection
- 31:20Speaker 1: of Michael Gasperson is this. He was a tall, big
- 31:23Speaker 1: bodied wide receiver. He could have been a tight end.
- 31:26Speaker 1: He had two years on the practice or trying to
- 31:28Speaker 1: make the team, would not make it, went and played
- 31:29Speaker 1: in NFL Europe. Came back year three. He finally makes
- 31:33Speaker 1: it to the Eagles as a He was on the
- 31:35Speaker 1: practice squad, but they activated him for one game. I
- 31:38Speaker 1: wanted to get him a catch, one career catch so
- 31:42Speaker 1: badly that Andy Reid drew up a play to get
- 31:45Speaker 1: him a ball in the flat against his own where
- 31:47Speaker 1: there was just no possible way he couldn't catch it.
- 31:50Speaker 1: They threw the mcnaw throws the first pass of the
- 31:52Speaker 1: game to him in the flat left side. He drops
- 31:55Speaker 1: it and he never got targeted again. Ruin is one
- 32:01Speaker 1: shot at getting an.
- 32:02Speaker 2: What a last name? Michael gas person.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Michael gas Person, that's remember. Uh So those are some
- 32:09Speaker 1: a look at some of our favorite Cornelius Ingram who
- 32:12Speaker 1: was on with Andrew, had a really nice camp before.
- 32:14Speaker 1: He was a fourth round pick out of Florida, had
- 32:16Speaker 1: all sorts of explosive traits, but suffered nacy l injury
- 32:20Speaker 1: and kept getting hurt and that was unfortunate. Can't think
- 32:23Speaker 1: of too many other tight ends. You and I watched
- 32:26Speaker 1: the kid from Buffalo right the quarterback turned tight end.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Oh he was great. That's a great one. Is Tyree
- 32:32Speaker 2: Jackson Jackson poor? They nailed that evaluation. He actually made
- 32:39Speaker 2: the successful conversion, but he got hurt. Had he not
- 32:42Speaker 2: gotten hurt, he could have had a long career here. Yep.
- 32:45Speaker 2: But yeah, he's trying to be like Logan. Thomas Logan
- 32:48Speaker 2: Thomas Ye had a long cer and made a lot
- 32:51Speaker 2: of money. Yeah, it's too bad.
- 32:54Speaker 1: And the finished off that one last running back two
- 32:56Speaker 1: thousand and eight was Lorenzo Booker, who was so dyna.
- 33:02Speaker 1: I remember watch taking he took a pitch right from
- 33:04Speaker 1: I think Garcia. No, I forget who the backup was
- 33:08Speaker 1: in that way I can't remember, took a pitch, juked
- 33:10Speaker 1: two guys out of their cleats in the backfield. He
- 33:13Speaker 1: should have been stopped for minus five, put the like
- 33:16Speaker 1: the Madden spin move on, and then ripped it up
- 33:19Speaker 1: the field for like a fifty yard touchdown. And it
- 33:22Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, this guy's incredible. But again
- 33:25Speaker 1: the lessons learned. He played ten games that year. He
- 33:28Speaker 1: rushed for fifty three yards on twenty carries two point
- 33:32Speaker 1: seven yards per carry for the Eagles. It just he
- 33:34Speaker 1: never even came close to being a good viable backup
- 33:38Speaker 1: for Brian Westbrook.
- 33:39Speaker 2: A third round picking seven out of Farida State. Never,
- 33:43Speaker 2: I mean, he just bounced around. He just really Yeah.
- 33:45Speaker 1: It got caught after one year, right for the Vikings.
- 33:47Speaker 1: So that's a lesson learned, all right. So those are
- 33:50Speaker 1: Lee Heisman on offense. A little stroll down memory lane.
- 33:53Speaker 1: In the next episode, we'll go through some guys on defense.
