- 1:49Speaker 3: Our buddy from Union Mission, is going to be making
- 1:50Speaker 3: a return appearance on the show today. Plus so Charleston
- 1:53Speaker 3: City Councilor Chad Robinson. Now last night Charleston City Council
- 1:56Speaker 3: met and one of the issues that you're probably going
- 2:00Speaker 3: to be hearing a whole lot about over the coming weeks,
- 2:03Speaker 3: especially as we head into the new year is in
- 2:05Speaker 3: proposed panhandling ordinance within the city limits. Now, it's not
- 2:09Speaker 3: necessarily what you think. It has more to do with
- 2:13Speaker 3: people standing around busy roadways and asking for money. Charleston
- 2:18Speaker 3: City Council and Chad Robinson one of the folks that
- 2:20Speaker 3: is at the forefront of this discussion. He's going to
- 2:22Speaker 3: join us to talk about that a little bit later on. Plus,
- 2:24Speaker 3: we now know who will coach the Mountaineers in their
- 2:26Speaker 3: bowl game. It's offensive coordinator Chad Scott, and I'll be
- 2:29Speaker 3: interested to talk to Chad about that. Chad Robinson, that
- 2:32Speaker 3: is because he's also a big Mountaineer guy. So we'll
- 2:34Speaker 3: get into that. Busher calls and text to welcome to

- 2:46Speaker 3: When do I have a discussion with University of Charleston folks.
- 2:48Speaker 3: They're doing something rather innovative, if you'll pardon the pun,
- 2:52Speaker 3: with the downtown Charleston and their use their their innovation hub,
- 2:56Speaker 3: which is Downtown Charleston. I had the chance recently to
- 2:58Speaker 3: tour the facility. In fact, I sit on the board
- 3:00Speaker 3: down there and had a chance to get get get
- 3:04Speaker 3: the full lay of the land, so to speak, down there,
- 3:06Speaker 3: not long ago. I just I think it's a wonderful
- 3:08Speaker 3: thing for employers and for job seekers in the area.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Doctor Russell Lasmar did I get it right?
- 3:13Speaker 5: Yes? You did that?
- 3:14Speaker 3: All Right is with us right now and he's the
- 3:16Speaker 3: program director for the Business Accelerat Accelerator program at the
- 3:20Speaker 3: University of Charleston's Downtown Innovation Hubb. It joins us now,
- 3:23Speaker 3: Good morning, welcome to the show, sir, well, thank you
- 3:25Speaker 3: for having me, thank you for being it. First of all,
- 3:28Speaker 3: for those who may not know exactly exactly what all
- 3:31Speaker 3: goes on at this downtown the Innovation Hub of University
- 3:35Speaker 3: of Charleston, let's start there before we get to the
- 3:37Speaker 3: Accelerator Accelerator program.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Okay, it's important to differentiate between the academic side of
- 3:44Speaker 6: the University of Charles and the business facing aspect of
- 3:48Speaker 6: the university. And the downtown Innovation Hub is by design,
- 3:53Speaker 6: our central location where we can launch out into the
- 3:55Speaker 6: business community. We can host events, folks, have conferences, meetings,
- 4:02Speaker 6: We have space that's available for lease, but the Business
- 4:06Speaker 6: Accelerator Program is our flagship program right now, and we
- 4:09Speaker 6: are exploring avenues for what's next another program that we
- 4:14Speaker 6: can bolt onto that to fill another gap in the
- 4:17Speaker 6: business needs of you know, the greater Charleston area.
- 4:20Speaker 3: And that's what we want to really get into is
- 4:22Speaker 3: to talk about this Business Accelerator program, who's it for
- 4:25Speaker 3: and what primarily does it do?
- 4:28Speaker 6: Right? Who's it for is easy if you're a growth
- 4:31Speaker 6: oriented small business in and around Charleston, so the greater
- 4:36Speaker 6: Charleston metropolitan area, this program has something for you. So
- 4:43Speaker 6: growth oriented small businesses, we've had ranging from I've been
- 4:49Speaker 6: in business for a year, I've started hiring outside of
- 4:52Speaker 6: friends and family, I have revenues to my business is
- 4:56Speaker 6: over one hundred years old, and I need new ideas,
- 5:00Speaker 6: need a new way of looking at things. So when
- 5:03Speaker 6: when you look at how long the firm's been in business,
- 5:06Speaker 6: is that that's not real important. What's is is important
- 5:10Speaker 6: that they're they're growth oriented, they're hiring, they have revenues
- 5:13Speaker 6: and and and they're looking for some ideas, some best
- 5:17Speaker 6: in class you know, uh uh, access to content that
- 5:22Speaker 6: can help them look at issues differently.
- 5:25Speaker 3: And talk about where this whole idea came from. What
- 5:29Speaker 3: did this concept originate?
- 5:32Speaker 6: We were looking for an opportunity to focus on the
- 5:36Speaker 6: business community with with with the flagship office with you know,
- 5:40Speaker 6: to make this.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Move and UH.
- 5:43Speaker 6: We were looking for a gap where there is UH,
- 5:47Speaker 6: where there are services lacking in the community for the
- 5:50Speaker 6: private businesses. Now, there are a ton of low and
- 5:54Speaker 6: no cost services available through the economic ecosystem. Those folks
- 6:01Speaker 6: do an incredible job, but when you get to a
- 6:04Speaker 6: certain point and you've outgrown what those resources can offer,
- 6:09Speaker 6: there's no there's no runway for you. Those services have
- 6:13Speaker 6: been exhausted. You're pretty much left to figure it out
- 6:16Speaker 6: on your own. So what we did was we devised
- 6:20Speaker 6: a program by which we can get best in class
- 6:22Speaker 6: content in front of these businesses that have already exhausted
- 6:28Speaker 6: all of the resources that are available from the startup
- 6:31Speaker 6: ecosystem or they're established businesses. So we divide this. We
- 6:38Speaker 6: we created the program to touch as many aspects of
- 6:42Speaker 6: the practice as possible. From inspiring an innovative mindset, we
- 6:50Speaker 6: have an interactive piece of content as it's specifically designed
- 6:54Speaker 6: to show people how to create an a pipeline of
- 6:59Speaker 6: in a within their business, so that it's not something
- 7:02Speaker 6: you just wake up one day and say, I want
- 7:04Speaker 6: to innovate. It's a practice, it's a process, and we
- 7:07Speaker 6: teach them how to do that. So we have a
- 7:09Speaker 6: series of modules each or a deep dive into different
- 7:12Speaker 6: aspects of what can be beneficial for their practice.
- 7:16Speaker 3: One of the things that I think is really fascinating
- 7:19Speaker 3: right now what's going on in America, and the listeners
- 7:22Speaker 3: have heard me talk about this repeatedly, is that when
- 7:26Speaker 3: it comes to things like this, like our higher education
- 7:29Speaker 3: folks getting involved in our communities. For so long it
- 7:32Speaker 3: was just the model of all right, we're going to
- 7:35Speaker 3: produce students and we're going to send them out into
- 7:37Speaker 3: the world. Now over the last ten fifteen years or so,
- 7:41Speaker 3: and there's a lot of institutions in our area that
- 7:43Speaker 3: are doing this right now, and they're getting involved with
- 7:45Speaker 3: bringing the business community in is saying what can we
- 7:48Speaker 3: do for you to help you out more? And I
- 7:51Speaker 3: would imagine my next question was going to be how
- 7:53Speaker 3: has this gone so far? And once the response has
- 7:55Speaker 3: been from the business community, I would say it's probably
- 7:57Speaker 3: been pretty dang good.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Right, Yeah, pretty dang good is one way to put it.
- 8:03Speaker 6: It's been resounding, it's been positive, we've been blessed, it's
- 8:08Speaker 6: been wildly successful. We've learned a lot by getting feedback
- 8:13Speaker 6: from these businesses that are going through the program on
- 8:15Speaker 6: on how we can adjust it, tweak it to make
- 8:18Speaker 6: it even more impactful for you know, subsequent businesses coming through.
- 8:22Speaker 6: But yeah, it is an opportunity for us to address
- 8:26Speaker 6: at the practitioner level, at the business level, which is
- 8:32Speaker 6: it's just a version for a typical university's mindset. But
- 8:37Speaker 6: it's important to mention that this six month program is
- 8:43Speaker 6: a no cost to the company when we can can't
- 8:48Speaker 6: argue with the price, well, it's about an eighty thousand
- 8:50Speaker 6: dollars value in offering services, content and information. But we
- 8:54Speaker 6: have been able to because the gap was clearly defined,
- 8:58Speaker 6: because it's because there's a need, we were able to
- 9:03Speaker 6: reach out and get grant funding from a variety of
- 9:07Speaker 6: folks from the e DA to the Benedem Foundation, to
- 9:10Speaker 6: the Elliott Family Foundation, and even the City of Charleston
- 9:14Speaker 6: to provide this program. It's a six month long program,
- 9:17Speaker 6: but to provide these services and this offering to the
- 9:21Speaker 6: business community at no cost to.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Them, it's an amazing program. I'm just learning about it myself.
- 9:26Speaker 3: A day vallance showing five any lie brought to you

- 9:36Speaker 3: or visit fresh Air Filters dot us because everyone deserves
- 9:39Speaker 3: fresh air. Now, explain to us you kind of touched
- 9:42Speaker 3: on a little bit. Explain to us the different parts
- 9:44Speaker 3: of the program, the modules that you have to go through.
- 9:47Speaker 6: It's a six month long program. It meets face to
- 9:51Speaker 6: face one day each month, and each module or each
- 9:58Speaker 6: session is a deep dive to an area that impacts
- 10:01Speaker 6: the business, inspiring the innovative mindset. We actually in January,
- 10:08Speaker 6: we're kicking off another cohort. We're going to have the
- 10:11Speaker 6: president and CEO of the global Innovation Management Institutes coming
- 10:16Speaker 6: down to deliver that content.
- 10:17Speaker 5: So that's going to be a powerful, a powerful workshop.
- 10:22Speaker 6: But that's going, as I said earlier, show folks how
- 10:26Speaker 6: to consider innovation a process instead of a thing. That
- 10:30Speaker 6: another module is a deep dive and it's a interactive workshop.
- 10:34Speaker 6: It's a lot of fun. Usually ranks up there as
- 10:37Speaker 6: the people's favorite on process improvements, how to identify, diagnose,
- 10:42Speaker 6: and improve workflows within your business because in many cases
- 10:49Speaker 6: workflows are well at work. Let's just continue doing it
- 10:52Speaker 6: that way. It's not necessarily improving it, but this gives
- 10:55Speaker 6: you the skills to be able to diagnose and correct those.
- 11:00Speaker 6: Then we have deep dives into cash awareness cash efficiency.
- 11:04Speaker 6: It's not an accounting class, it's not a bookkeeping class.
- 11:07Speaker 6: It's how to understand what causes what related to cash
- 11:12Speaker 6: flow in the business. And marketing module, not to say
- 11:18Speaker 6: you know you need to market or digital marketing is
- 11:21Speaker 6: where we need to go, but to help you be
- 11:23Speaker 6: able to create start to craft a marketing guideline for
- 11:27Speaker 6: yourself and a blueprint so you can move forward. And
- 11:31Speaker 6: the final session we have a lot of fun with
- 11:33Speaker 6: this one is the firms have the opportunity to present
- 11:37Speaker 6: their business informed by everything that they've gone through the
- 11:40Speaker 6: sixth model, the six months, in front of members of
- 11:46Speaker 6: the financial stack in the community. So they get a
- 11:50Speaker 6: chance to actually present their business to folks that control
- 11:54Speaker 6: access to money. It's not a shark tank like a
- 11:57Speaker 6: fish bowl, it's polite. We will have work with these
- 12:00Speaker 6: folks on the mission, the vision, their values, their growth gap,
- 12:03Speaker 6: what they plan on doing to fill that. All of
- 12:05Speaker 6: that will be covered other six months. But then they
- 12:07Speaker 6: get some feedback directly from the folks that have access
- 12:11Speaker 6: to money, and that's a lot of that. I like
- 12:14Speaker 6: that that's the best session of them all because they
- 12:16Speaker 6: get to demonstrate what they've learned about themselves.
- 12:18Speaker 3: And I would imagine that these businesses learn a lot
- 12:20Speaker 3: from each other as well, not just from the folks
- 12:23Speaker 3: facilitating these meetings, but they you can learn a lot
- 12:25Speaker 3: by networking, so to speak, and by learning what worked
- 12:28Speaker 3: for you, what didn't work for you. They kind of
- 12:30Speaker 3: worked together on these things. Right before we close, I
- 12:33Speaker 3: want to ask you of the program just received an award?
- 12:36Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 12:37Speaker 6: Yes we did, Yes, we did, and and and it's
- 12:40Speaker 6: another blessing that came our way because we worked very
- 12:42Speaker 6: hard to try to put together a program that would
- 12:45Speaker 6: add value years beyond you know where we sit today.
- 12:50Speaker 6: And we were just recognized by the Global Innovation Management
- 12:54Speaker 6: Institute internationally as a top three ecosystem startup support organization.
- 13:01Speaker 6: So we we're we're waiting for that trophy to show
- 13:04Speaker 6: up any day. It's a good one, you know, just
- 13:06Speaker 6: hopefully it's in time for our next cohort. It starts
- 13:09Speaker 6: in January. We're still taking applications. We have a few
- 13:11Speaker 6: slots open, and if anybody is interested in reaching out
- 13:16Speaker 6: finding out more about the program, they can get ahold
- 13:18Speaker 6: of us in one of three ways. They can get
- 13:20Speaker 6: us on phone, email, or Facebook. Can I give them

- 19:17Speaker 3: Jason Quintreil, now of Union Mission. How are you, sir?
- 19:20Speaker 5: I'm doing great man. How are you?
- 19:21Speaker 3: Thank you for being here. Last time you were on,
- 19:24Speaker 3: you were preparing for the annual Drumstick Dash on Thanksgiving morning.
- 19:28Speaker 3: How did that go?
- 19:29Speaker 5: It was wet, it was cold, but we had a thousand,
- 19:32Speaker 5: We had a thousand racers. It was one thousand, a
- 19:34Speaker 5: little over one thousand. It was great man, you.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Were I think when I had you on the show,
- 19:39Speaker 3: I think it was the day before Thanksgiving that you
- 19:40Speaker 3: were on. I think there was a little bit of
- 19:42Speaker 3: concern because of the weather. And I told you then
- 19:44Speaker 3: that runners are basically crazy, as are golfers, and they
- 19:48Speaker 3: don't care what the weather is. They're going to get
- 19:50Speaker 3: out there and run by gully. You pulled in over
- 19:51Speaker 3: a thousand people. Not too terribly bad.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Not chabby at all. You were spot on, all.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Right, So let's talk about the weather a little bit
- 20:00Speaker 3: before we get into some other things. Obviously we're dealing
- 20:03Speaker 3: now with some of the you know, coldest temperatures that
- 20:05Speaker 3: we've had. It's not even officially wintertime yet. My folks
- 20:08Speaker 3: in the weather business say it's called meteorological winter. But
- 20:11Speaker 3: the official kick off on your calendar is not till,
- 20:14Speaker 3: like you know, twenty first twenty seconds. But nonetheless, I mean,
- 20:17Speaker 3: when I left my house this morning around seven, I
- 20:19Speaker 3: think it was like twenty two to twenty three degrees.
- 20:22Speaker 3: What happens to the folks that you A lot of
- 20:25Speaker 3: the ones that you service when the weather gets cold
- 20:28Speaker 3: like this.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Yeah, so most of them will come into our almost
- 20:33Speaker 5: shelter only on Solvan Way. They get fed, they get
- 20:38Speaker 5: a bed, they get We do have expectations, you know.
- 20:42Speaker 5: We push them and try to find jobs for them.
- 20:45Speaker 5: We have barrier removals to try to get driver's license
- 20:48Speaker 5: and birth certificates and try to move them in the
- 20:51Speaker 5: right way to start getting back on their own.
- 20:56Speaker 3: So it's old to me and to rush you. So
- 20:57Speaker 3: what I'm saying is is you don't know necessarily when
- 21:00Speaker 3: you open up your doors. I mean, obviously you want
- 21:03Speaker 3: to take care of people and get them out of
- 21:04Speaker 3: the cold or whatever. But there's there is an expectations
- 21:07Speaker 3: from them that you're going to have to do something
- 21:08Speaker 3: to either earn a spot here or at least show
- 21:11Speaker 3: us that you're working towards something. Talk about that.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Yeah, so that's the deal. So we give somebody about
- 21:15Speaker 5: two weeks they come into our and this is just
- 21:17Speaker 5: our men's shelter. We have many different ways in which
- 21:19Speaker 5: we help people, but speaking of our men's shelter, we
- 21:22Speaker 5: give somebody about a week to two weeks to get
- 21:24Speaker 5: their feet underneath them, and then we start the expectation
- 21:27Speaker 5: of what we call barrier removal all those things that
- 21:29Speaker 5: are going to hold them back, finds, whatsoever, and we
- 21:33Speaker 5: immediately start looking for employment. We immediately start getting them
- 21:37Speaker 5: on the track with a meeting with a banker to
- 21:41Speaker 5: learn about checking accounts and savings accounts, and we want
- 21:44Speaker 5: to start that process as soon as possible. Yeah, there's
- 21:47Speaker 5: definite expectations.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Talk with Jason Contrell again from Union mission of a

- 22:12Speaker 3: got going on?
- 22:12Speaker 2: Man?
- 22:12Speaker 10: Man?
- 22:13Speaker 5: We do so with WCHS, the TV station. We have
- 22:16Speaker 5: been doing the Christmas Shop for twenty plus years with
- 22:19Speaker 5: these folks, and that has started already and applications are
- 22:24Speaker 5: still going on right now. We've got in, We've got
- 22:27Speaker 5: right now one hundred and fifty actually closer to two
- 22:30Speaker 5: hundred families signed up now, but we are still taking applications.
- 22:34Speaker 5: If you know of a single mom that's struggling, if
- 22:37Speaker 5: you know of a family that's struggling to get Christmas
- 22:39Speaker 5: gifts for their kids, please call us three zero four
- 22:42Speaker 5: nine two five zero three six six. You can ask
- 22:46Speaker 5: directly for Katie Bush. She'll get the application to you
- 22:49Speaker 5: and get that taken care of. And we also if
- 22:52Speaker 5: you want to donate to this, please call us, or
- 22:54Speaker 5: you can go online and do that as well. If
- 22:56Speaker 5: you want to go shopping for these kids. The ages
- 22:59Speaker 5: are zero to six and Man we'll take. We've got
- 23:03Speaker 5: bikes already, we've got dolls, We've got all kinds of
- 23:05Speaker 5: toys right now already.
- 23:07Speaker 3: And sometimes people I think, and I think you and
- 23:11Speaker 3: I talked about this possibly last time you were here,
- 23:13Speaker 3: that there's sometimes there's a need for the older kids too,
- 23:16Speaker 3: because because they kind of I say, kids, teenagers, whatever
- 23:20Speaker 3: you want to call them, they kind of get forgotten
- 23:22Speaker 3: in all this.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Yeah, the thirteen to sixteen age group. You're exactly right, Dave,
- 23:26Speaker 5: get they get kind of left out a little bit.
- 23:28Speaker 5: It's fun to buy little kids, two, three, four or
- 23:30Speaker 5: five year olds. It's fun to buy those gifts. And
- 23:33Speaker 5: so people don't really know exactly what a teenager wants,
- 23:36Speaker 5: or maybe they think of they have to get an
- 23:38Speaker 5: iPad or they have to get an Apple watch or something.
- 23:40Speaker 5: That's definitely not the case.
- 23:42Speaker 3: What are some of the things that people could get?
- 23:43Speaker 5: Basketballs, football, it's clothing, my goodness, yeah, clothing, knives I had.
- 23:47Speaker 5: It was funny yesterday I was sitting in my office
- 23:49Speaker 5: and I had a bunch of people bring Amazon boxes
- 23:51Speaker 5: to my office and have my name on. It was
- 23:53Speaker 5: actually for Christmas Shop, and it was like body sprays
- 23:58Speaker 5: for girls, and it was sweatpants and and hoodies for
- 24:02Speaker 5: girls and stuff like that. So yeah, I was kind
- 24:05Speaker 5: of hoping it was for me, but.
- 24:06Speaker 3: It was not for you. It was not for you.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Let's talk about the overall mission, Union mission, so to speak.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Every time I have you on, I like to have
- 24:14Speaker 3: people explain what it is that you folks do.
- 24:17Speaker 5: So we help the hurting people in Jesus name. Basically
- 24:20Speaker 5: that's in West Virginia, and that's that's what we've been
- 24:22Speaker 5: doing for one hundred and thirteen years now. And the
- 24:26Speaker 5: many scopes I mean, from education to recovery, to homelessness
- 24:31Speaker 5: to just every every month needs somebody lost a job
- 24:37Speaker 5: and they mean that they may need help food wise
- 24:40Speaker 5: or or something like that, we step in and help.
- 24:44Speaker 3: I got a text here for you that says, there
- 24:47Speaker 3: are several homeless in Charleston that we see that have
- 24:49Speaker 3: dogs with them. Are these pets allowed in the shelter
- 24:52Speaker 3: with their owners during these nights?
- 24:54Speaker 5: That is That is a very good question. It's not
- 24:56Speaker 5: something that I have addressed within our men's shelter, But
- 25:01Speaker 5: I don't think that actually brings up a really good point.
- 25:03Speaker 5: I think that that might be a topic for our
- 25:06Speaker 5: next conversation in my mens Shelter meeting. That's a good point.
- 25:10Speaker 5: There's no reason to leave those dogs out. Well, we'll
- 25:13Speaker 5: work on that.
- 25:13Speaker 3: All right. That's a very good point. Remind us again
- 25:17Speaker 3: where people can get in touch with you, because I
- 25:18Speaker 3: know we have a lot of people that listen that
- 25:20Speaker 3: are involved in civic organizations, or they're involved in in
- 25:23Speaker 3: church groups or whatever the case may be, and they
- 25:25Speaker 3: would like to get involved and to kind of help
- 25:27Speaker 3: out the various projects you do, not just a Christmas Jason,
- 25:30Speaker 3: but year round.

- 29:54Speaker 3: deal with the homeless problems there. You know, a lot
- 29:57Speaker 3: of times I think when we talk about homeless issues
- 30:00Speaker 3: and so on and so forth. That's a very good
- 30:01Speaker 3: point from the Texter we only think about the urban areas.
- 30:04Speaker 3: I think about the Charlestons and Huntington, Morgantown. But if
- 30:07Speaker 3: you go up into a matter of fact, down in
- 30:10Speaker 3: my native land down in Logan County. Just talked to
- 30:14Speaker 3: some folks down there a couple of days ago that
- 30:15Speaker 3: had been working on a large home homeless encampment there
- 30:19Speaker 3: in Logan County. So it happens in areas other than
- 30:22Speaker 3: just the urban areas. A very good point by the
- 30:25Speaker 3: text Texas says Conservatives need to look in the mirror
- 30:29Speaker 3: and evaluate their choice for president before they let out
- 30:32Speaker 3: all the performative, commercialized outrage over Biden reversing his stance
- 30:36Speaker 3: on pardoning his son. The pot, calling the kettle black

- 31:39Speaker 3: twenty is here is that right word? Twenty Ward twenty
- 31:42Speaker 3: Good morning, Dave all Right man, good, I mean go
- 31:44Speaker 3: ahead and clear up any questions or confusions accountsmen that
- 31:48Speaker 3: may arise. I want to go ahead and get this
- 31:49Speaker 3: out on the open now. You are not being considered
- 31:53Speaker 3: to take over for coach Neil Brown and Morganton absolutely not.
- 31:56Speaker 3: All right, did you support the firing or do you
- 31:58Speaker 3: want to say, yeah, I like Neil Brown.
- 32:01Speaker 13: I think Neil Brown took over the time for Westernia
- 32:04Speaker 13: football that needed rebuild the program, and he did a
- 32:08Speaker 13: good job. But you know, you got to win on
- 32:10Speaker 13: the field.
- 32:11Speaker 3: I think uh. And again, I think the reason I'm
- 32:14Speaker 3: bringing this up because you may be one of the
- 32:16Speaker 3: biggest Mountaineer fans that I know close, I think, well,
- 32:20Speaker 3: I know a lot, but I will say I think
- 32:22Speaker 3: that what you're saying is not is not wrong. Among
- 32:26Speaker 3: a lot of other Mountaineer faithful that are saying that,
- 32:28Speaker 3: you know, coach Brown was a don't I've never heard
- 32:30Speaker 3: anybody say anything negatively about him off the field, about
- 32:33Speaker 3: the way he treated members of the media, the way
- 32:36Speaker 3: he treated the staff. I mean, I've talked to people
- 32:38Speaker 3: that are very closely associated with the Mountaineer football team.
- 32:41Speaker 3: They say, you couldn't ask for a better guy. But unfortunately,
- 32:45Speaker 3: it all comes down to wins and losses.
- 32:47Speaker 10: That's right.
- 32:48Speaker 13: It's it's a w's and l's and you know, thirty
- 32:50Speaker 13: seven and thirty five and six years. I mean, that's
- 32:53Speaker 13: that's not acceptable. But like you said, I've never heard
- 32:56Speaker 13: anybody say a bad word about Neil Brown, and I
- 32:59Speaker 13: hope he does well. I think he'll pick up another
- 33:00Speaker 13: job real quick.
- 33:01Speaker 3: I think so. I think so maybe maybe in a
- 33:04Speaker 3: little over his head. Possibly, I don't know. I mean
- 33:06Speaker 3: I will see, but there's a big jump from Troy
- 33:08Speaker 3: to West Virginia. Well, and with his people skills, I
- 33:10Speaker 3: think that Neil Brown would make an excellent possibly athletic
- 33:14Speaker 3: director or something like that. Am I saying because he's
- 33:17Speaker 3: a young guy. When I'm totally closing the door on
- 33:19Speaker 3: his on his coaching altogether, but just saying it. Possibly possibly,
- 33:23Speaker 3: I agree with you, and I hope he'll he lands
- 33:25Speaker 3: on his feet. I think he's generally, genuinely a very
- 33:27Speaker 3: good guy. I do too.
- 33:28Speaker 13: And you know, we need some energy back in the
- 33:31Speaker 13: program and hopefully the new coach they hire will bring that,
- 33:34Speaker 13: and I think rim Baker will do a good job.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Any any insight or any anybody that you'd like to
- 33:39Speaker 3: see in Morgantown. Anybody I'd like to see Jimbo Jimbo
- 33:42Speaker 3: Fisher jimbo A lot of people would agree with that,
- 33:46Speaker 3: but I don't know that jimbo Is is going to
- 33:49Speaker 3: be there in his I mean, and of course everybody's
- 33:52Speaker 3: banging the Rich Rodriguez drums. Well, Hoppy's actually got a
- 33:55Speaker 3: poll going on on AX right now about that. Would
- 33:57Speaker 3: you support bringing rich Rodriguez back to Morgan chance at
- 34:00Speaker 3: all that? And then I promise we'll not talk about sports.
- 34:02Speaker 13: I like to see someone new. I don't think Rich
- 34:05Speaker 13: rod needs come back.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Okay, all right, all right, So last night Charleston City Council,
- 34:12Speaker 3: and if I get anything's wrong, you can correct me.
- 34:14Speaker 3: A bill was formally introduced and referred to the Rules
- 34:17Speaker 3: and Ordinance and Public Safety committees that would prohibit panhandling
- 34:21Speaker 3: in the city. Where does all this come from, Council?
- 34:24Speaker 13: Well, recently Willing passed a new ordinance dealing with public safety,
- 34:29Speaker 13: public safety and pedestrian bill. We've looked at it in
- 34:33Speaker 13: the past. You know, when I first got on council,
- 34:36Speaker 13: probably five years ago, during COVID, we had a bill
- 34:39Speaker 13: to deal with similar issues about ingress egress into the city,
- 34:44Speaker 13: about public safety, about corners meetings, things like that. Past
- 34:48Speaker 13: two committees unanimous and then we didn't take it up
- 34:52Speaker 13: for certain reasons that I agreed with at the time.
- 34:56Speaker 3: What were those reasons if well, you know.
- 34:57Speaker 13: The threats of lawsuits, did we have the language correct?
- 35:02Speaker 13: You know, it was so important in these things council
- 35:04Speaker 13: money and and uh, you know, at that point in time,
- 35:07Speaker 13: we were meeting by zoom. We weren't in person, so
- 35:10Speaker 13: we had two meetings. We didn't have a lot of
- 35:12Speaker 13: discussion in the committee. We had, you know, maybe fifty
- 35:15Speaker 13: forty five to fifty minutes in each meeting. It's not
- 35:19Speaker 13: going to be like that this time. We're going to
- 35:21Speaker 13: have lots of discussion on the issue. We're you know,
- 35:24Speaker 13: I've already met one time with my Ordnance and Rules
- 35:27Speaker 13: Committee looking at a draft bill before it was introduced.
- 35:31Speaker 13: Last night, we talked for fifty minutes. There's questions, there's comments, concerns,
- 35:37Speaker 13: and we're going to bring people in from certain departments
- 35:40Speaker 13: in the city and we're going to look at the
- 35:42Speaker 13: issue of areas of concern that the bill addresses for
- 35:45Speaker 13: pedestrians and the public safety in the right of ways
- 35:51Speaker 13: on and off ramps in the in the city from
- 35:53Speaker 13: the interstate, and we're going to look at a broad
- 35:56Speaker 13: spectrum of all the issue that goes into all this.
- 35:59Speaker 3: And I think that the idea Council. Again we're talking
- 36:02Speaker 3: counsel with Chad Robinson. I think that that you're bringing
- 36:05Speaker 3: that into the conversation is this is not about the
- 36:09Speaker 3: guy coming up to you as you're walking out of
- 36:11Speaker 3: your favorite restaurant or whatever, saying, hey, can do you
- 36:14Speaker 3: have any change? This is not what this is about.
- 36:17Speaker 3: This is about from what I understand, what this starts
- 36:19Speaker 3: with is these folks that are standing with science. And
- 36:23Speaker 3: this is not just the quote unquote. I mean because
- 36:25Speaker 3: I heard one of the council people and I didn't
- 36:27Speaker 3: catch the name. I apologize. I don't want to disrespect
- 36:29Speaker 3: that council person, but I didn't catch the name that
- 36:32Speaker 3: said something to the fact that this was just an
- 36:34Speaker 3: attack on the unhoused in Charleston. That's not accurate at all.
- 36:37Speaker 13: And this is an issue about hey, coming off the interstate,
- 36:41Speaker 13: Let's think about the roadways first. We have individuals in
- 36:45Speaker 13: cars stopping in the middle of the flow of traffic
- 36:49Speaker 13: and handing out money when there's cars coming off the
- 36:54Speaker 13: interstate behind him and causing REX. We have REX all
- 36:57Speaker 13: throughout Charleston calls by the issues and let's look at
- 37:01Speaker 13: the public safety.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Listen.
- 37:03Speaker 13: You know we have individuals staying of corners. They have
- 37:06Speaker 13: the right to do that. But you know what, we
- 37:07Speaker 13: have the right to protect the public about safety, caution
- 37:12Speaker 13: and cars and automobiles all across the sea, and that's
- 37:15Speaker 13: what we need to do.
- 37:17Speaker 3: Are you concerned, counselmen that this could and again, we're
- 37:20Speaker 3: just in the infancy of this thing right now. This
- 37:23Speaker 3: is not I mean, it's just it's being discussed in committee.
- 37:25Speaker 3: It's not going any further at this point. It will,
- 37:27Speaker 3: but we don't want to put the cards before the
- 37:30Speaker 3: proverbial horse here. But are you concerned that maybe that
- 37:33Speaker 3: or have you heard concerns from others that it could
- 37:35Speaker 3: go too far that it that this could affect because
- 37:39Speaker 3: this is not as you said, and I kind of
- 37:41Speaker 3: want to go back to this again. It's not just
- 37:44Speaker 3: about the person that we all see on the on
- 37:46Speaker 3: ramp holding a sign or off ramp that says hungry,
- 37:49Speaker 3: please help. There have been other issues within the city
- 37:52Speaker 3: with with with other folks that are collecting money for
- 37:56Speaker 3: for kids programs for whatever. This is all going to
- 37:59Speaker 3: be compassed into that We don't know what the final
- 38:03Speaker 3: writing is gonna look like on the wall, but are
- 38:05Speaker 3: you concerned it could go too far? That's right.
- 38:07Speaker 13: This is a encompasses anyone campaign signs. Candidates holding signs
- 38:13Speaker 13: in the middle of medians.
- 38:15Speaker 3: Not easy now, because you know you're apology.
- 38:18Speaker 13: I know, but I've done it before too. But but
- 38:20Speaker 13: it's in some points that's dangerous. I mean we've seen
- 38:23Speaker 13: people back when Vic Sprouse started the process here in
- 38:26Speaker 13: Kanall County standing in the meetings a quarter g that's dangerous.
- 38:30Speaker 13: I mean at this point in time, with drivers the
- 38:32Speaker 13: way they are, I mean, we can't slow people Daan, We're.
- 38:35Speaker 3: Trying and distracted driving, so everybody's texting and doing everything
- 38:38Speaker 3: else they're doing.
- 38:38Speaker 4: Uh.
- 38:39Speaker 13: You know, we have individuals and medians with with animals.
- 38:42Speaker 13: There's dogs sitting with them. What happens if the dog
- 38:45Speaker 13: runs runs across the road chasing a squirrel or a
- 38:47Speaker 13: cat and it causes the wreck. That's a problem, and
- 38:51Speaker 13: we're gonna look at it. You know what. I'm not
- 38:53Speaker 13: here to say, hey, we're going to pass something right away.
- 38:56Speaker 13: We're gonna discuss it. I've always taken every issue that
- 38:59Speaker 13: comes before my committee and we're gonna discuss it as
- 39:03Speaker 13: the as the mayor said yesterday on your show, I'm
- 39:06Speaker 13: not pushing it down anyone's throat. We're gonna sit down,
- 39:09Speaker 13: we're gonna have meetings, uh counselor and Sean Taylor, and
- 39:12Speaker 13: I've already agreed that we're gonna let the discussion happen.
- 39:15Speaker 13: We're gonna bring in the officials, we're gonna talk about it,
- 39:18Speaker 13: and UH, you know, we'll see what at the end
- 39:20Speaker 13: of the day, what draft and what language we come
- 39:23Speaker 13: up with, and UH, hopefully we'll get something past so
- 39:26Speaker 13: we can help with the with the traffic problems, with
- 39:28Speaker 13: the with the accidents, and with the individuals on the
- 39:31Speaker 13: streets and corners.
- 39:32Speaker 3: And you reference the city of Wheeling that has looked
- 39:35Speaker 3: at similar, uh similar proposals. Where are they right now?
- 39:39Speaker 13: They've passed in ordinance. The language that we the language
- 39:43Speaker 13: we introduced last night is very similar to their language
- 39:47Speaker 13: they passed a month or two ago. It's not identical
- 39:51Speaker 13: because our code is different than theirs, but UH, it's
- 39:55Speaker 13: very similar. It talks about the areas of concern, it
- 39:58Speaker 13: talks about the UH in their language that was twenty
- 40:02Speaker 13: five miles prior or higher. We've changed hours to thirty.
- 40:06Speaker 13: I'd like to look at the ingress and egress language
- 40:09Speaker 13: that we've had before, and certain bills that you know, Look,
- 40:12Speaker 13: let's look at the coming off the interstate. Let's look
- 40:15Speaker 13: at going on in the interstate, you know, things like that.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Give us an idea of some of the area's councilmen
- 40:24Speaker 3: that we're getting people's heads here. Okay, give us an
- 40:28Speaker 3: idea a historical landmark, so to speak, that we would
- 40:32Speaker 3: be looking at, for example, if this, if this whole
- 40:34Speaker 3: thing passes, I mean, just get in your proverbial car,
- 40:37Speaker 3: take a drive, and tell us exactly what areas that
- 40:39Speaker 3: we could be looking.
- 40:41Speaker 13: Let's look at coming off the interstate on Pennsylvania Okay,
- 40:45Speaker 13: going on to Virginia Street. There's individuals standing there right
- 40:49Speaker 13: in a meetium with dogs. The cars are coming off
- 40:52Speaker 13: the interstate a high rate of speed. You know, it's
- 40:55Speaker 13: supposed to be thirty or forty miles prior. Right there,
- 40:58Speaker 13: they're coming off there fast. There's there's cars on both
- 41:01Speaker 13: sides of that meeting. That's a good example. Right there,
- 41:04Speaker 13: Kanall City, beside the Taco bell coming off the interstate,
- 41:07Speaker 13: there's individuals standing on the inside part of the cones.
- 41:11Speaker 13: You know, we still have construction cones in Kanas City,
- 41:13Speaker 13: as you know.
- 41:13Speaker 2: You well know.
- 41:15Speaker 3: It's it's interesting I have you on the show to
- 41:17Speaker 3: talk about something other than construction.
- 41:19Speaker 13: But you know we have any individual standing on the
- 41:21Speaker 13: inside of the roadway from the cones that are there, uh,
- 41:25Speaker 13: inside the lines. That's another example. I mean, that's that's
- 41:28Speaker 13: closer to my ward. Those are two good is good
- 41:31Speaker 13: locations that we can look at. But you know, we're
- 41:35Speaker 13: not talking about neighborhoods. We're not talking about the west
- 41:39Speaker 13: side Washington Street areas that might you know, there are
- 41:43Speaker 13: issues there. You know, there's a lot of traffic there.
- 41:46Speaker 13: But you know, let's look let's first look at the
- 41:48Speaker 13: high rated traffic. Uh the speed's coming off off and
- 41:52Speaker 13: onto the interstates. We'll start there and see where we go.
- 41:55Speaker 3: And let's uh, before we let you go, I've got
- 41:57Speaker 3: a couple of things I want to get to you about.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Let's talk about where it goes from here. Now, it
- 42:02Speaker 3: was brought up last night, referred to I think the
- 42:05Speaker 3: rule committee by committee. So what happens next? Because you
- 42:09Speaker 3: referenced I had the mayor on the show yesterday and
- 42:12Speaker 3: she says to me, this is going to be something
- 42:14Speaker 3: we're gonna be talking about a whole lot in the
- 42:16Speaker 3: new year. So I don't think this is when when
- 42:18Speaker 3: the Council you know, reconvenes. I don't think that you're
- 42:21Speaker 3: going to have you know, at your next meeting, Council.
- 42:24Speaker 3: But I don't think that you're going to have it. Okay,
- 42:26Speaker 3: here's what we're gonna do. It's going to be discussed
- 42:28Speaker 3: for quite some time. So what's the timeline at this point?
- 42:30Speaker 13: Look like I'm looking at the calling a meeting maybe
- 42:33Speaker 13: next week the week after before Christmas, of my Ordnance
- 42:36Speaker 13: and Rules Committee, having a first another shot at discussion.
- 42:41Speaker 13: In our original meeting, when we were looking at the
- 42:43Speaker 13: draft language, there were questions regarding traffic with with police presence.
- 42:49Speaker 13: So I'm gonna ask for those officials to be be present.
- 42:53Speaker 13: We'll ask questions go from there. I think after the
- 42:55Speaker 13: first of the year we might get some final language,
- 43:00Speaker 13: maybe some some amendments things like that, but it won't
- 43:03Speaker 13: be in the next few days or anything like that.
- 43:06Speaker 3: It'll be after the new year, all right, and there's
- 43:08Speaker 3: gonna be a whole lot more discussion, just like there
- 43:10Speaker 3: was in these other cities like Wheeling and whatever that
- 43:12Speaker 3: you mentioned before we let you go. The final meeting
- 43:14Speaker 3: of the Capitol Connector project is scheduled for this afternoon,
- 43:17Speaker 3: five thirty in the Library downtown. Any thoughts on that
- 43:20Speaker 3: from you?
- 43:20Speaker 13: The Capital Connector, you know, that's that's gonna be a
- 43:23Speaker 13: great project for the See of Charleston. The Minister, the Mayor,
- 43:26Speaker 13: and the hern administration went out and got these grants
- 43:29Speaker 13: for the twenty five million. You know, I looked at
- 43:32Speaker 13: the plans. I think they're going to try to finalize
- 43:34Speaker 13: them tonight or or in a very near future.
- 43:36Speaker 3: It's gonna be a.
- 43:37Speaker 13: Big project coming off greenbrog Street towards the Capitol, all
- 43:40Speaker 13: the way down the thirty fifth Street bridge.
- 43:41Speaker 3: It's good for Charleston. The mayor said on the show
- 43:44Speaker 3: yesterday that we're a riverfront city that doesn't utilize their
- 43:46Speaker 3: riverfront nearly as much as they should.
- 43:48Speaker 13: You agree with that, I do, and you you look
- 43:50Speaker 13: at uh look at Canoell Boulevard. I mean we use
- 43:52Speaker 13: one part of it. Basically we can use the entire
- 43:56Speaker 13: project to go all the way down to use in
- 43:59Speaker 13: front of the Capitol down by the thirty fifth Street bridge.
- 44:02Speaker 13: That's an area that is seldom used for the riverfronts.
- 44:06Speaker 3: All right, I appreciate you being here, and we'll have
- 44:09Speaker 3: you on again, probably the next couple of weeks, maybe
- 44:11Speaker 3: even next week once your rules committee meets. We'll be
- 44:13Speaker 3: talking about this a whole lot in the new year's
- 44:15Speaker 3: Charleston City Council and Chad Robinson, I appreciate you being here, man,

- 47:29Speaker 3: just after eleven on talk line to talk with Hoppy
- 47:31Speaker 3: about the panhandling issue in the city at Charleston. On
- 47:35Speaker 3: the Hunter Biden situation. Text says, none of these sleazy

- 47:41Speaker 3: word about the promise to pardon January sixth, criminals who
- 47:44Speaker 3: disgraced Trump, who he calls political prisoners. Republicans have no integrity,
- 47:49Speaker 3: says a texture, A texture that is not texture. Texas
- 47:53Speaker 3: says the panhandling issue was brought up during the first
- 47:56Speaker 3: Good one term by a formal council member, but was
- 47:58Speaker 3: poo pooed then by your guests. I am glad for
- 48:01Speaker 3: the about face, says a Texter Texas's Dave. When you
- 48:05Speaker 3: have it, Mike Pushkin back on the show, would love
- 48:07Speaker 3: to hear his expert opinion on why the voters nationwide
- 48:09Speaker 3: chowse overwhelmingly the Conservative Republican Party candidates. Anytime that Mike

- 48:25Speaker 3: he goes, says a Texter. Texter says David Charleston police
- 48:31Speaker 3: and Canawh County prosecutors work together more efficiently. At least
- 48:34Speaker 3: half of the homeless people in town wouldn't be on
- 48:36Speaker 3: the streets. They'd be incarcerated. A large percentage are dangerous
- 48:40Speaker 3: with rap sheets full of violent offenses, and many are
- 48:42Speaker 3: convicted sexual offenders. Just go and check out the roll
- 48:45Speaker 3: sheet at the Rourke Sullivan Men's shelter, says a tex
- 48:49Speaker 3: Texas Dave. I agree the coach Brown had to be
- 48:51Speaker 3: let go. He's responsible for the performance of the team
- 48:55Speaker 3: as a whole, but I also think the individual players
- 48:58Speaker 3: must also be held in the same screw as well
- 49:00Speaker 3: if they drop passes or lose the ball or miskicks.
- 49:03Speaker 3: They're already having their educations paid for, which thousands of
- 49:06Speaker 3: students would be very appreciative of. But they want all
- 49:08Speaker 3: this nil money, then they must take the negative consequences
- 49:12Speaker 3: as well, says a texture Texas dave. Until the city
- 49:18Speaker 3: adequately funds public services to help the homeless, mentally ill,
- 49:21Speaker 3: and addicted, these folks are going to turn to the
- 49:23Speaker 3: free market and take their message to the streets. Current shelters,
- 49:26Speaker 3: day centers and healthcare options are failing the poor and homeless,
- 49:30Speaker 3: and blaming those groups for trying to help these people
- 49:32Speaker 3: is part of the problem. It's a civil case of
- 49:34Speaker 3: a nimby. Not in my backyard, says a texture text says,
- 49:39Speaker 3: and encouraging people to come downtown and drink beer and
- 49:42Speaker 3: wine in public is hypocritical, says a texture tex says
- 49:47Speaker 3: he's misusing high rate of speed, which means increasing speed,
- 49:51Speaker 3: different from speeding. Dad was a physicist and consultant lawyers
- 49:56Speaker 3: in court cases on this term used wrongly in the
- 49:59Speaker 3: police reports, says a Texter. You know, and again I
- 50:03Speaker 3: heard some of the comments. I did not attend the
- 50:05Speaker 3: meeting last night, but I did hear some of the
- 50:06Speaker 3: comments and there have been some people in the community
- 50:09Speaker 3: of city council folks that are saying that this basically,
- 50:12Speaker 3: and I'm very much paraphrasing here, is just a war
- 50:15Speaker 3: on the homeless, the unhoused, the poor, whatever you want
- 50:18Speaker 3: to call them. But what they're looking at folks in
- 50:21Speaker 3: Charleston right now, And again the language is being looked at.
- 50:24Speaker 3: This is the third time. I think it's the third time,
- 50:26Speaker 3: as the texture pointed out, but this has been brought
- 50:29Speaker 3: up and maybe the language wasn't right the other times,
- 50:31Speaker 3: but this is not just going to impact the homeless
- 50:35Speaker 3: the unhoused. If the person standing at the intersection holding
- 50:39Speaker 3: the sign that says please hungry, this what they're looking at.
- 50:43Speaker 3: This could have to do with charitable things, you know,
- 50:46Speaker 3: people standing in in intersection with a sign that says
- 50:49Speaker 3: car wash, you know, girl, scott Cookies for sale, whatever,
- 50:53Speaker 3: campaign signs. And I thought that was interesting and council
- 50:58Speaker 3: when Robinson brought that up and say politician himself, you
- 51:01Speaker 3: know that he's had to run for office and he
- 51:03Speaker 3: said in the past he's held up campaign signs. If
- 51:05Speaker 3: depending on what the final language in this thing looks
- 51:08Speaker 3: like it could very easily impact those things as well.
- 51:13Speaker 9: Texts.
- 51:14Speaker 3: Let me get a sponsor credit in here, shall we?

- 51:24Speaker 3: with this. Aaron Parker has a story posted about this
- 51:27Speaker 3: at wv Metronews dot com. Officials in the city of
- 51:29Speaker 3: Dunbar have released more details regarding two investigative reports of
- 51:35Speaker 3: misconduct by the Dunbar Police Department. The reports were released
- 51:40Speaker 3: at a civil service meeting which was held yesterday, according
- 51:44Speaker 3: to the story, and again you can read it for
- 51:45Speaker 3: yourself at wv metro news dot com. According to the report,
- 51:48Speaker 3: Dunbar Mayor Scott Elliott requested the information from the former
- 51:52Speaker 3: Dunbar Police Chief, Brian Oxley, but the mayor says he
- 51:55Speaker 3: did not get said information. The loss that involved a
- 52:01Speaker 3: death in one of the cases was settled for somewhere
- 52:04Speaker 3: in the neighborhood. I think of about two million dollars
- 52:07Speaker 3: and I want to get into this story a little
- 52:08Speaker 3: bit more in the future, but until then, go over
