- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's bring in Kim Strassel, the peniw columnist for The
- 0:02Speaker 1: Wall Street Journal and Foxy's contributed to Mark pen former
- 0:04Speaker 1: Clinton poster and CEO of Stagwell Incorporated. So, Kim, let's
- 0:09Speaker 1: begin with you. A lot of Democrats when we look
- 0:11Speaker 1: at New York City, you're saying, oh, this is just
- 0:14Speaker 1: a local race, This does not have national implications. But
- 0:18Speaker 1: there's some people out there who believe that if Mom
- 0:20Speaker 1: Donnie pulls off a big victory, this could beginning be
- 0:23Speaker 1: the beginning of a socialist wave across America, at least
- 0:26Speaker 1: in big, big blue cities.
- 0:28Speaker 2: What do you think, Yeah, it is. It is going
- 0:31Speaker 2: to have national implications, John, I mean one for Republicans,
- 0:35Speaker 2: because if Mom Donnie wins, you're going to see a
- 0:37Speaker 2: very easy foil be set up for President Trump and
- 0:41Speaker 2: Republicans pointing out his policies, the failures, maybe using him
- 0:45Speaker 2: as an excuse to send National Guard troops into as
- 0:48Speaker 2: a president already threatened to cut off federal funding, and
- 0:52Speaker 2: so it is going to be their poster child for
- 0:55Speaker 2: where things are going for the Democratic Party. But for
- 0:58Speaker 2: the Democratic Party too, you had Andrew Cuomo there saying
- 1:02Speaker 2: this is going to matter. You've already got progressives out
- 1:05Speaker 2: there saying, hey, look we've got two paths here. Look
- 1:08Speaker 2: we were running moderates in New Jersey and Virginia, and
- 1:11Speaker 2: then we've got a Democratic socialist in New York and
- 1:14Speaker 2: he's doing better. That just shows that this is the
- 1:16Speaker 2: future of the party. If he wins, they're going to
- 1:19Speaker 2: take that as a sign the Progressive Democrats are the
- 1:23Speaker 2: future again, and maybe stop in the tracks some of
- 1:25Speaker 2: the second thoughts Democrats have been having about what direction
- 1:29Speaker 2: they need to go.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So Mark all I has a bit on New York City,
- 1:32Speaker 1: but you also have to look to Minneapolis in Seattle
- 1:34Speaker 1: as well, where self proclaimed socialists are running for mayor
- 1:38Speaker 1: there Omar Fatah in Minneapolis, Katie Wilson in Seattle, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: the backing for them is splitting the party as well.
- 1:46Speaker 1: For example, in Minneapolis, Omar Fatah is backed by Ilhan
- 1:50Speaker 1: Omar Jacob Frey, who is the incumbent, is backed by
- 1:53Speaker 1: Tim Waltz. I mean, there are a lot of people
- 1:56Speaker 1: in the Democratic Party who do not want to see
- 1:58Speaker 1: this move towards socialism.
- 1:59Speaker 3: What do you say, Well, I agree with them, essentially.
- 2:06Speaker 3: What's happened here is that DSA has glombed onto the
- 2:10Speaker 3: Democratic Party and said, hey, we're Democrats, And unfortunately the
- 2:13Speaker 3: DNC leadership has said, sure, come on in, doesn't really
- 2:17Speaker 3: matter if you believe things that are completely antithetical to
- 2:20Speaker 3: core democratic principles. We're welcoming you if you win elections.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I think that's a crazy position for a party. It's
- 2:27Speaker 3: ultimately fundamentally destructive. I always remind people that in nineteen
- 2:31Speaker 3: seventy two and nineteen eighty four, the Democratic Party managed
- 2:34Speaker 3: to reduce itself to a single state, and we could
- 2:38Speaker 3: be headed for another wave. I mean, look, we see
- 2:40Speaker 3: what happened in Chicago. There was a clear choice. They
- 2:43Speaker 3: chose the candidate farther to the left, and now the
- 2:46Speaker 3: entire city is in an uproar because of the results
- 2:49Speaker 3: that they've gotten. These cities with these mayors are going
- 2:52Speaker 3: to get worse results, and this I think trend has
- 2:56Speaker 3: the real capability to take the party even further down.
- 3:00Speaker 3: So let's face it, it's out of power in all
- 3:02Speaker 3: branches of government precisely because it's moved too far to
- 3:05Speaker 3: the left.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought it was pretty interesting the President Trump
- 3:08Speaker 1: threw his support behind Andrew Cuomo in New York City.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Cuomo is trying to run on good governance, though a
- 3:14Speaker 1: lot of people would say he doesn't have a particularly
- 3:16Speaker 1: a great track record after being governor of New York State.
- 3:19Speaker 1: It's showing that. But the appeal for Mondami is mostly
- 3:23Speaker 1: among gen Z voters Kimberly who liked the idea of
- 3:27Speaker 1: free stuff, free buses, free childcare, you know, low rent
- 3:32Speaker 1: things like that. But remember, as Margaret Thatcher famously said,
- 3:35Speaker 1: let's put it up on the screen, the problem with
- 3:37Speaker 1: socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money. Kimberly,
- 3:43Speaker 1: that's absolutely right.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And by the way, John, don't we all love other
- 3:46Speaker 2: people's money. But it just doesn't really work that way.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I mean, I can appreciate why Donald Trump is really
- 3:53Speaker 2: putting his hat in the ring for Cuomo. Curtis Leewa
- 3:56Speaker 2: doesn't have a shot of winning this and if the
- 3:59Speaker 2: president come back a guy who you know it looks
- 4:01Speaker 2: as though the polls are narrowing in the gaps there
- 4:04Speaker 2: and help them put in a good show that really matters.
- 4:07Speaker 2: One thing to watch here, because you make a great
- 4:10Speaker 2: point if this is just younger people and really base
- 4:14Speaker 2: voters who are turning out in this election. I think
- 4:17Speaker 2: that's where you get the big Mom Donnie lead that
- 4:20Speaker 2: you've seen in some of the polls. But Cuomo's been
- 4:23Speaker 2: making the point that if this is a huge turnout
- 4:25Speaker 2: election and a lot of people are motivated that maybe
- 4:28Speaker 2: you haven't heard from to maybe not to be on
- 4:32Speaker 2: board with Mom Donnie, then he's got a better shot.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Maybe that's where you see some of that tightening.
- 4:38Speaker 1: And I just want to finish off with you, Mark.
- 4:40Speaker 1: On another topic, this is going on in California. What's
- 4:42Speaker 1: on the ballot there today is Prop fifty And here's
- 4:46Speaker 1: what Prop fifty would do. Here's currently the makeup of
- 4:49Speaker 1: congressional delegation in California. You've got nine Republicans. If Prop
- 4:53Speaker 1: fifty is passed, there is a good chance that Republican
- 4:56Speaker 1: representation will go down to just four seats. Team Jeffries
- 5:00Speaker 1: was pressed on this idea of jerrymandering on a Sunday
- 5:04Speaker 1: show a week Aldgo. Here's what he said.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Listen here, Democrats are going to push back aggressively to
- 5:10Speaker 4: make sure that we have fair maps across the country,
- 5:14Speaker 4: not partisan jerrymandering, which Republicans have initiated in state after
- 5:19Speaker 4: state after state.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I mean, if you take a look at that the
- 5:21Speaker 1: potential there in California, how is that possibly fair? And
- 5:24Speaker 1: not only that, but Democrats have been at this jerrymandering
- 5:27Speaker 1: game for decades.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Now.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Well that's true because I think Eric Holder and Barack
- 5:35Speaker 3: Obama have had this fake nonpartisan redistricting effort which was
- 5:40Speaker 3: really about going from state to state and trying to
- 5:42Speaker 3: maximize the number of Democratic seats that they could get.
- 5:45Speaker 3: And in fact, the Democrats have an overall advantage, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 3: in this jerry mandering. Now, look, the Texas things set
- 5:52Speaker 3: off a war. Politics is going to be met by politics.
- 5:55Speaker 3: I think it's an exercise in hypocrisy for Jakim Jefferies
- 5:59Speaker 3: of the to go out and say, well, if they
- 6:01Speaker 3: do that, we'll do this. You know, four seats in
- 6:04Speaker 3: California when what is a thirty forty percent of the
- 6:07Speaker 3: state is Republican. That is jerry banderin in the extreme.
- 6:11Speaker 3: On the biggest level, it is rank hypocrisy. I don't
- 6:14Speaker 3: know how we're going to work our way out of it.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Politics being what it is these.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Days, Yeah, it's a zero sum game and it's getting
- 6:20Speaker 1: even worse than that. Mark Kimberly, Great to talk to you.
