- 2:06Speaker 1: Critics Association, and our resident film critic here at Nashville
- 2:10Speaker 1: Movie Dispatch, mister big Shot Brandon, Vic Brandon, Merry Christmas, Christmas.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I love this time of year.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you feel about the tone from going from
- 2:23Speaker 1: Tangerine a couple of weeks ago to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I saw a lot of horrors in this one too show.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I'm sorry, you're just out of line.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Doris Roberts.
- 2:35Speaker 1: This was gonna be a nice episode. It was.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's still can be. It's still but yeah, will
- 2:41Speaker 2: this is a This is probably one of the biggest
- 2:43Speaker 2: shifts you can make from one Christmas movie to another,
- 2:48Speaker 2: but this is one I think all of us watch
- 2:51Speaker 2: every year, and it's one of the big ones for
- 2:55Speaker 2: us because it is something that like, I don't even
- 2:57Speaker 2: have to watch it all the way through. I can
- 2:59Speaker 2: just turn it on at different parts, let it play.
- 3:03Speaker 2: It's still funny. I love some of the music, and
- 3:07Speaker 2: so yeah, it puts me in the holiday cheer.
- 3:10Speaker 1: We've also got our buddy Brett back Brett. How are
- 3:13Speaker 1: you doing Merry Christmas?
- 3:14Speaker 3: I'm doing good, Merry Christmas. I shared A couple of
- 3:17Speaker 3: weeks ago, I had acquired a pickle me elbow. Yeah,
- 3:22Speaker 3: my children just one.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:23Speaker 3: You won't believe this if you remember in Jingle all
- 3:26Speaker 3: the Way, when Howard took that turboman out from under
- 3:31Speaker 3: the neighbor's tree. That happened, Is that right? So now
- 3:34Speaker 3: I've gotten a trickle me elmo, kind of like a waterboarding.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Who took your who took the other one? That pickle me?
- 3:42Speaker 3: We haven't, it's still in process trying to figure that out.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I thought you brought up Jingle all the Way to
- 3:48Speaker 1: say that you got a fresh new slurboman doll.
- 3:51Speaker 3: You know those were sold out too, well, those are
- 3:54Speaker 3: three years ago. Yeah, I did, I did look into that.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I think the lesson we've learned here is that if
- 3:59Speaker 2: I'm not Mista, can you live in Antioch? And that's
- 4:01Speaker 2: the album. I think that's the real issue here for Christmas.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Either way, No matter the circumstances, this is a movie
- 4:09Speaker 3: that lives rent free in my head. Hell yeah, I'm
- 4:12Speaker 3: happy to be here to talk about.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Is there just right off the bat? National Lampoon's Christmas
- 4:18Speaker 1: Vacation nineteen eighty nine. If I didn't say it, American,
- 4:23Speaker 1: an American Christmas slapstick comedy film, the third installment in
- 4:28Speaker 1: National Lampoon Magazine's Vacation film series. Christmas Vacation was directed
- 4:34Speaker 1: by Jeremiah s Chechik. I don't know any other films
- 4:39Speaker 1: that Jeremiah did. H Goodfellows, good Fellas? Are we gonna just.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Take it to the bank. Don't look it up.
- 4:45Speaker 1: No no, no, no no, don't worry, Brandon. We have
- 4:47Speaker 1: the Internet. I don't.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I think that's right.
- 4:50Speaker 2: That sounds right to me.
- 4:52Speaker 1: He also did. Jeremiah also did Bennie in June. Sure,
- 4:57Speaker 1: Tall Tale, Okay, Balik diyanball.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Eeks, Yeah, when's Goodfellas?
- 5:05Speaker 1: Come in the Avengers. What how about that nineteen ninety
- 5:10Speaker 1: eight's The Avengers?
- 5:12Speaker 2: Oh, would refine Thurman.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yep, and then the right kind of wrong in twenty thirteen.
- 5:20Speaker 1: So quite the uh, quite choamography there. It looks like
- 5:25Speaker 1: he did. He did some episodes of Burn Notice, oh,
- 5:30Speaker 1: three episodes of Gossip Girl, a lot of TV, A
- 5:33Speaker 1: lot of TV one.
- 5:35Speaker 2: What happens when you make the movies? You just said,
- 5:39Speaker 2: you go to TV?
- 5:40Speaker 1: Yeah, so this to me, uh, to just start this
- 5:46Speaker 1: conversation on this fine, fantastic film. It's gotta be the
- 5:52Speaker 1: most quotable Christmas movie. Oh, I see, well, I feel
- 5:56Speaker 1: like there's going to be a contingent of people that
- 5:58Speaker 1: are going to go to ELF because there's a lot
- 6:00Speaker 1: of quotes that came from ELF.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Now go to Hell.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I have, yes, that tis the season. You're right, that's right,
- 6:07Speaker 1: I I have softened. I liked ELF when I first
- 6:11Speaker 1: saw it, and then I rewatched it years later because
- 6:15Speaker 1: we did an episode of Drinking with Stephen mccash about ELF,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and I kind of realized about myself, is that I
- 6:23Speaker 1: like it because of the Christmas vibes. I don't actually
- 6:27Speaker 1: think it's that great of a film. I'm just saying
- 6:30Speaker 1: it has like a cult following, and there are people
- 6:34Speaker 1: out there that, to me, when I think of quotable
- 6:37Speaker 1: Christmas films, these are the two that I think of.
- 6:39Speaker 1: And I feel like there would be a strong contingent
- 6:41Speaker 1: of moviegoers that would say Elf is the most quotable
- 6:45Speaker 1: Christmas film of all.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I think some people would say Crazy Nights because these
- 6:49Speaker 2: things are talking about by day Man, yeah, and some
- 6:53Speaker 2: other things. But I feel like Christmas Vacation is kind
- 6:57Speaker 2: of the same way. Like, I don't think it's like
- 6:59Speaker 2: a well done, great movie, but for what it wants
- 7:05Speaker 2: to do and the people in it and the Christmas Yeah,
- 7:09Speaker 2: in the Christmas environment, it's just funny. It's stupid and
- 7:13Speaker 2: it's silly, but it is funny. But it does like
- 7:16Speaker 2: it does exactly what it's supposed to do when it's
- 7:20Speaker 2: Christmas time.
- 7:21Speaker 1: It's really interesting to look back at it too, because
- 7:25Speaker 1: when it was released it had got pretty mixed reviews.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and I think you can see it too
- 7:30Speaker 1: when you I mean, when you watch it, it's like, well,
- 7:32Speaker 1: if it wasn't the charm of the Christmas season.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Yeah, there's not much else going on.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Yeah, but over time. It's one of those films that
- 7:41Speaker 1: really grew legs in the hearts of audiences, so to speak,
- 7:44Speaker 1: because it became a Christmas classic, something that families sit
- 7:48Speaker 1: around every year. I know, like we do an event
- 7:51Speaker 1: we get together Black Friday every year, cook breakfast for
- 7:56Speaker 1: dinner and watch Christmas Vacation and it's crazy nights. Yeah,
- 7:59Speaker 1: but uh, there's a lot of people that do that.
- 8:02Speaker 1: But just like the the iconic characters in it, the dialogue,
- 8:10Speaker 1: the script, I feel like it's one of the funniest,
- 8:13Speaker 1: but also I think it's the most quotable Christmas movie
- 8:17Speaker 1: of all time. Where did you land on this one?
- 8:18Speaker 3: B From a quotable standpoint, I feel like this is
- 8:22Speaker 3: MJ versus Lebron debate of they're different eras, and you know,
- 8:27Speaker 3: maybe maybe Elf is that of Post two thousand, but
- 8:32Speaker 3: I feel like for this era, it's got to be
- 8:34Speaker 3: Christmas Vacation.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And what do you guys? So I did not realize
- 8:40Speaker 1: this was technically the third Vacation film series. First of all,
- 8:46Speaker 1: I also did not realize until doing research for this podcast,
- 8:50Speaker 1: that National Lampoon was actually a magazine.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought it was like a film company like
- 8:57Speaker 1: you know, Broken Lizardy, just a kind of guys that
- 8:59Speaker 1: make movies together, that sort of deal.
- 9:01Speaker 2: And there's some documentaries about National Lampoon and kind of
- 9:05Speaker 2: the way that it started and it was a big
- 9:07Speaker 2: deal and then their first one. I don't remember what
- 9:10Speaker 2: their first movie was because a lot of it was
- 9:11Speaker 2: a magazine and then I.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Know, like it was a magazine.
- 9:15Speaker 2: A Animal House was a part of it as.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Humor magazine from nineteen seventy to nineteen ninety eight, so
- 9:22Speaker 1: twenty eight year run. Yeah, let me see if I
- 9:25Speaker 1: can find the films that they did on.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they still did some all the way
- 9:29Speaker 2: up to I mean there's some National Lampoons whatever. Now
- 9:33Speaker 2: I'm not saying that they're good ones and that they
- 9:35Speaker 2: went straight to light.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeah, what it is National Lampoon today?
- 9:39Speaker 2: But I don't know what it is today because they
- 9:41Speaker 2: were doing some movies. But they they were always kind
- 9:45Speaker 2: of like they tried towards the end at least, they
- 9:48Speaker 2: were kind of like trying to do what like American
- 9:51Speaker 2: Pie did. I was gonna say, trying to do like
- 9:54Speaker 2: with younger people.
- 9:55Speaker 3: It may not be this exactly, but I'm thinking of
- 9:58Speaker 3: things like Van Wilder.
- 10:00Speaker 2: That is yeah?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Is that so? Man? They did They did everything National Lampoon.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I never realized this was such a big brand. But
- 10:08Speaker 1: they did do like they did books, they had theater,
- 10:14Speaker 1: they had record like vinyl cassette tapes at the time,
- 10:17Speaker 1: they did you won't televisions.
- 10:21Speaker 3: But the shoes I'm wearing are National lamp is. Yeah, predaced.
- 10:26Speaker 1: All right, here we go. The list of National Lampoon films.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Animal House nineteen seventy eight, Movie Madness, Class Reunion, Vacation,
- 10:37Speaker 1: Joy of Sex, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Loaded Weapon One,
- 10:43Speaker 1: Senior Trip, Vegas Vacation, Golf Punks, Van Wilder replicate, but
- 10:48Speaker 1: it's like repla hyphen Kate as in Kate. I don't
- 10:51Speaker 1: even know what that is. That's two thousand and two,
- 10:54Speaker 1: black Ball in two thousand and three, Jake's Booty Call
- 10:57Speaker 1: in two thousand.
- 10:58Speaker 2: This sounds fun.
- 11:00Speaker 1: And then it switched over to National Lampoon Incorporated. There's
- 11:05Speaker 1: a ton of movies barely Legal, Gord gold Diggers, Dorm.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Days, Dorm Days.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I remember Van Wilder, The Rise of taj Oh.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you can't forget that.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know any of these movies, But there.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I'm looking at some that say National Pen's Last Resort.
- 11:24Speaker 2: They had Corey Feldman and Corey Ham.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Oh good.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And there's one that has a where is it National
- 11:30Speaker 2: Lampoon's Holiday Reunion with Judge Renhold and Brian Princeton.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Oh man, we need to watch the You should see
- 11:39Speaker 1: the cover. They rebooted it in twenty fifteen with Ed Helms,
- 11:44Speaker 1: Ed Helms as a grown up rusty grizzly. Yeah, was
- 11:48Speaker 1: that any good? Did y'all see that?
- 11:50Speaker 3: I didn't?
- 11:51Speaker 2: I did? It's all right? And Chevy Chase and Beverly
- 11:53Speaker 2: Dangelo make a cameo, as is Chris Simsworth.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Isn't it yep?
- 11:58Speaker 2: He is in it?
- 11:59Speaker 1: Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I see National Lampoon Shindler's List. I must have done
- 12:07Speaker 2: that one.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah. So uh this.
- 12:11Speaker 2: National Lampoons says apocalypse now I am.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna be honest with you guys. It sounds like
- 12:19Speaker 1: a whole lot of I don't really give a ship.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Yes, longer ago past the vacation ones. Yeah, you're what
- 12:27Speaker 2: that's probably about? Right?
- 12:29Speaker 1: Excuse me? What were y'all's opinions on Animal House? Did
- 12:32Speaker 1: y'all ever see that.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I haven't seen it, so I think I've seen bits
- 12:37Speaker 2: and pieces and I'm kind of like you, I didn't
- 12:39Speaker 2: think it was that funny, but I haven't seen the
- 12:41Speaker 2: whole thing, I don't think, and I sometimes get it
- 12:45Speaker 2: confused with Porkys that I did see, and it was
- 12:49Speaker 2: it that was the most that was such a waste
- 12:52Speaker 2: of time and like cringe worthy gross, Like I like,
- 12:57Speaker 2: either if I was in that movie and washed it today,
- 12:59Speaker 2: there's there's no way I could look at myself and
- 13:01Speaker 2: be like that I thought that was good.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Yeah, having not seen it, I do wonder, and we've
- 13:06Speaker 3: asked this about other movies. Is it just you had
- 13:10Speaker 3: to be in that era?
- 13:11Speaker 1: I think so, yeah, because that's what I've been like
- 13:14Speaker 1: hyper critical of Animal House. I mean to the point
- 13:17Speaker 1: like I've caught flack online because I wrote a review
- 13:22Speaker 1: of it and posted my notes of watching it for
- 13:26Speaker 1: the very first time, and I caught a lot of
- 13:29Speaker 1: flak for it from people that were older, just saying like, no,
- 13:33Speaker 1: you don't understand. At the time John Belushi putting an
- 13:39Speaker 1: onion in his mouth and smashing his cheeks like he
- 13:42Speaker 1: was popping a zip. That was Pete comedy greatest show.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I remember one of them saying that that they they
- 13:49Speaker 2: that like you knew your stuff, but they hated your personality.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what it was about my
- 13:54Speaker 1: review of Animal House.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I'm just thinking six months or a year ago, my
- 13:58Speaker 3: wife watched Old Cool. It was on TV, and she
- 14:01Speaker 3: watched some of it and she she looked at me,
- 14:04Speaker 3: like offended, and said, was this funny? And it was
- 14:07Speaker 3: just kind of like you just kind of had to
- 14:08Speaker 3: be there.
- 14:09Speaker 2: It's like funny, that's the problem.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's different now.
- 14:14Speaker 2: It was first I loved it, like with Will Ferrell
- 14:17Speaker 2: and that Frank the tank and then when he's acting
- 14:20Speaker 2: like he's playing hockey and hits it in the house, and.
- 14:24Speaker 3: I just wonder if it's the same kind.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I'm sure it is for a different generation, I.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Would guess, so I would guess. So yeah, But I
- 14:32Speaker 1: I didn't like Animal House, but I don't I'm conflicted,
- 14:36Speaker 1: Like I haven't seen any of the other vacation movies,
- 14:40Speaker 1: so how how did those stack up? Because there's a
- 14:43Speaker 1: quote somewhere in my research I found that I should source,
- 14:46Speaker 1: but I don't have it handy. But somebody said at
- 14:50Speaker 1: some point during all this that these vacation movies are
- 14:53Speaker 1: little more than a vehicle for Chevy Chase.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I've seen, I've seen vacation, and You're vacation. To me,
- 15:02Speaker 3: Christmas Vacation is the definitive vacation.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I agree. I don't remember seeing all of European Vacation.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I remember seeing. I think I did watch the original vacation,
- 15:13Speaker 2: but nothing was as quotable, certainly nothing as funny as
- 15:17Speaker 2: Christmas Vacation and then Vegas Vacation would come after this one.
- 15:22Speaker 3: And I've seen a good amount of it, if not
- 15:24Speaker 3: all of them.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's why it ended. It's not it's not
- 15:30Speaker 2: even that funny, much less that fun and Chevy Chase
- 15:35Speaker 2: is past his prime. All that's gone.
- 15:37Speaker 3: The antics, the formula that's there in Christmas Vacation of
- 15:42Speaker 3: kind of you know, there's the piece with him trying
- 15:45Speaker 3: to flirt with a younger attractive woman like that's in
- 15:48Speaker 3: all of the movies, I feel like, and him doing
- 15:51Speaker 3: ridiculous slapstick things like that's in all of the movies.
- 15:55Speaker 2: No, I think the formula has been the same for
- 15:57Speaker 2: however long. But the thing is is that depending on
- 16:00Speaker 2: where you put this family. It can work, wonders, or
- 16:04Speaker 2: it can backfire. And I think there's a little bit
- 16:07Speaker 2: of I think there's a little bit of all of
- 16:09Speaker 2: that probably in all of them. But Vegas Vacation, what
- 16:12Speaker 2: is the worst Christmas Vacation is the only one I
- 16:15Speaker 2: really care to just visit just because it is fun.
- 16:17Speaker 2: And again, well, it's still silly.
- 16:20Speaker 1: What I was essentially getting at with like the National
- 16:22Speaker 1: La Lampoon movies as a whole, and people saying like, oh,
- 16:26Speaker 1: Chevy Chase just makes these things. It's a marketing gimmick
- 16:30Speaker 1: to get him over, so to speak. The other movies,
- 16:33Speaker 1: how they stand up to Christmas Vacation, Like, is this
- 16:37Speaker 1: just the case where kind of like what we were
- 16:40Speaker 1: dancing around before, probably not that great of a movie
- 16:44Speaker 1: that has helped tremendously buy the Christmas setting.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you know, spoiler alert because we'll go
- 16:53Speaker 3: there later. But for me, like you said, the plot,
- 16:57Speaker 3: all of that whatever on this movie, but on quotability
- 17:02Speaker 3: and vibes alone, ten out of ten.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and when the family comes and visits and all
- 17:08Speaker 2: of that interaction with them, on top of like trying
- 17:12Speaker 2: to make it the best Christmas and the decorations and
- 17:15Speaker 2: the neighbors who are no fun and don't give a
- 17:18Speaker 2: shit about Christmas. Like, there's a lot in there, and
- 17:20Speaker 2: Cousin Eddie is a huge part of it. That you know,
- 17:25Speaker 2: they did a Christmas vacation too, that was just about
- 17:29Speaker 2: because of Eddie's thing. I never saw it, and from
- 17:31Speaker 2: what I understand, Randy Quaid now is a very sensible person,
- 17:34Speaker 2: so I'm sure things have worked out. But but yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 2: I just yeah, Christmas definitely plays a part because like,
- 17:44Speaker 2: like honestly, let's just say, you're you know we talk
- 17:48Speaker 2: about this in March, for instance, Yeah, I don't want
- 17:51Speaker 2: to watch it. No, I'm not interested. I don't give
- 17:54Speaker 2: a shit about Christmas Vacation.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Then I will say it's because of what this movie is.
- 18:02Speaker 3: I could watch parts of it in other times of
- 18:04Speaker 3: the year. Maybe not in March in theory, not that
- 18:07Speaker 3: we would ever talk about it then, but I do
- 18:12Speaker 3: think I could watch it other I do. I was
- 18:14Speaker 3: gonna say, we owe a debt of gratitude to vacation
- 18:18Speaker 3: and European vacation, because without them we don't get this.
- 18:21Speaker 3: So fair enough, we need that for the characters, for
- 18:24Speaker 3: Cousin Eddie, for Clark for all of them.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. That's true, and I basically after Thanksgiving
- 18:32Speaker 2: through December, I can watch.
- 18:35Speaker 3: It anytime I've opened that window. This is a good
- 18:38Speaker 3: rabbit trail. I've opened that window to post October, like
- 18:44Speaker 3: as long as for November, as long as Halloween's over, Christmas.
- 18:50Speaker 1: A peak behind the curtain. We were all three college roommates.
- 18:54Speaker 1: We lived in the same apartment for our entire college.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Are you okay?
- 18:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm fine.
- 19:00Speaker 3: A please keep in the goodness.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Do you need to change your diapers?
- 19:02Speaker 2: No? No, no, okay, but there's a smelly frog in here.
- 19:06Speaker 2: I'll tell you that much.
- 19:07Speaker 1: We uh, we were all roommates in college, and there
- 19:12Speaker 1: was one year that you guys gave me ship because
- 19:15Speaker 1: on Halloween night, after we came in from you know,
- 19:19Speaker 1: we were wild. And yeah, back then we had come
- 19:22Speaker 1: in from I think having dinner at Little Caesar's or
- 19:25Speaker 1: Applebee's and eight o'clock Halloween was over. So I actually
- 19:30Speaker 1: took down the Halloween decorations and put up Christmas lights
- 19:32Speaker 1: in my room that night. So I am, I'm all
- 19:35Speaker 1: for it.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Like I would like to publicly apologize.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Not me.
- 19:39Speaker 2: There's gotta be November. You can't you enjoy spooky season
- 19:44Speaker 2: November first, you're free to You're free to to roam
- 19:48Speaker 2: and do what you play.
- 19:49Speaker 3: It has become for me September and October or spooky season.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Right, that's yeah, in November that I have a window.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I don't know if you know this about Brett, and
- 20:00Speaker 1: we're just gonna air this out live on the podcast whatever.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I have like a small collection of what I call
- 20:06Speaker 1: fall movies, and so like Labor Day through like the
- 20:10Speaker 1: second week of September, I'm watching like when Harry Met
- 20:13Speaker 1: Sally Dead Poet Society. You've Got Mail was a good
- 20:18Speaker 1: one that Brandon submitted. I like watching The Departed at
- 20:21Speaker 1: that time of year. It's just like stuff that's like
- 20:24Speaker 1: set in the fall. Goodwill Hunting is another one, but
- 20:27Speaker 1: it's not like themed.
- 20:28Speaker 3: You get through and see the autumn leaves as you're
- 20:31Speaker 3: talking about, thank.
- 20:31Speaker 1: You, thank you, get through those two weeks and then
- 20:34Speaker 1: I'm switching over to spooky season. Yeah, but it is
- 20:37Speaker 1: like I consider the holidays like the entire last third
- 20:41Speaker 1: of the year. Yes, Like, Okay, I'm winding down for
- 20:44Speaker 1: the year. Hopefully I've accomplished everything I want to do.
- 20:47Speaker 1: And I'm going to start getting into these these films
- 20:50Speaker 1: and why not. Christmas Vacation is one that, man, when
- 20:55Speaker 1: I think about not just the movies I watch every Christmas,
- 20:58Speaker 1: which I think if I had, well, maybe we'll save that.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Maybe we'll save that for the end of the show.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Mount rushmore of Christmas movies for all of us, just
- 21:06Speaker 1: jotting that down, making notes, live producing a podcast. But
- 21:10Speaker 1: it's not just one of those movies that I watch
- 21:12Speaker 1: every year. I'm liable to watch it like two or
- 21:15Speaker 1: three times every season.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, So.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Do you guys actually know what the film is based on?
- 21:24Speaker 1: This is not like an independent original screenplay. This is
- 21:28Speaker 1: an adapted screenplay.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Oh no, I think I have heard before that. It's
- 21:32Speaker 3: like is it a book or a short story?
- 21:34Speaker 1: It is based off of the short story called Christmas
- 21:37Speaker 1: fifty nine that was published in National Lampoon written by
- 21:42Speaker 1: John Hughes. Oh so, for those not familiar, John Hughes
- 21:45Speaker 1: fabled director Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes,
- 21:52Speaker 1: Trains and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and his last one was
- 21:58Speaker 1: Curly Sue, which is John Hughes did not do what.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I remember seeing Curly Sue because they had Jim Belus.
- 22:07Speaker 1: It's like, well.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Anthony, listen, just for people, don't question me. Anthony Miguela
- 22:12Speaker 2: directed The English Patient.
- 22:15Speaker 1: I'm looking at his filmography. I'm like, John Hughes did not.
- 22:20Speaker 2: National Lampoon Shimmler's List, though, have you seen it?
- 22:22Speaker 1: So I wanted to ask you, guys, do you have
- 22:26Speaker 1: a favorite John Hughes film?
- 22:29Speaker 2: Oh?
- 22:31Speaker 1: I like the Breakfast.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Club, Breakfast I mean, I guess probably the Breakfast I
- 22:34Speaker 2: mean I feel like it always goes back to kind
- 22:36Speaker 2: of breakfast Club or sixteen Candles, which I mean, I
- 22:39Speaker 2: honestly have not watched those in years.
- 22:42Speaker 1: It's been a while. Maybe we need to revisit one
- 22:44Speaker 1: of those.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. Maybe Bride of Chucky.
- 22:47Speaker 1: That's not one of the ones that I listed.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Oh, I just thought you skipped some.
- 22:51Speaker 1: No.
- 22:52Speaker 2: I did like Curly Sue, I had Jim Belushi, and
- 22:55Speaker 2: I don't know the Little Girl, but I did like
- 22:56Speaker 2: that one.
- 22:57Speaker 3: I'll throw in there. This is probably not my favorite,
- 23:00Speaker 3: but I only saw it a few years ago. Planes,
- 23:02Speaker 3: Trains and Automobiles holds up, well, does it?
- 23:05Speaker 2: It's like a Thanksgiving Yes, that is Thanksgiving that's a
- 23:09Speaker 2: Thanksgiving very much.
- 23:10Speaker 1: So it's it plays this timing year too well.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I mean I think specifically it is for Thanksgiving. Yes,
- 23:20Speaker 2: but I watch it. You know what, I don't want
- 23:21Speaker 2: to I don't want to distract here. But I watched
- 23:25Speaker 2: a Christmas movie that had Steve Martin called Mixed Nuts.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Have you ever seen that?
- 23:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I know of it. I've not seen it.
- 23:32Speaker 2: No, I didn't really like it.
- 23:34Speaker 1: That's okay.
- 23:38Speaker 2: His movie has Steve Martin. I thought it was worth
- 23:40Speaker 2: mentioning that is true. But yeah, no, I don't know.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I guess Breakfast Club. I mean I feel like it's
- 23:47Speaker 2: kind of like the earlier stuff that kind of establishes them,
- 23:49Speaker 2: and then I like, but he also produced a thousand things.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Ferris Bueler's hard to top that for me.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I did like that. Yeah you haven't really I
- 24:00Speaker 2: have seen.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Oh we need to do that. Can we please do
- 24:03Speaker 3: a good one?
- 24:03Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 24:04Speaker 2: That is a good one, but yeah, maybe Fairris Bueller.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I think I kind of enjoyed that one more than
- 24:09Speaker 2: Breakfast Club. But there's so many memorable things in Breakfast Club.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I think that's why it kind of sticks with you.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Breakfast Club is probably more iconic to me, but fair
- 24:17Speaker 3: Fueler is probably more rewatchable to me.
- 24:21Speaker 2: No, that's that's fair.
- 24:23Speaker 1: So we've talked about these vacation movies kind of being
- 24:27Speaker 1: a vehicle for chevy Chase. I love that phrasing because
- 24:30Speaker 1: it does kind of fel feel wie.
- 24:32Speaker 2: I think that's how Fletch was. I mean, I think
- 24:34Speaker 2: that's how a lot of things were back in the day,
- 24:36Speaker 2: is that they kind of had this guy yeh, kind
- 24:39Speaker 2: of built it around them. I mean, I feel like
- 24:40Speaker 2: that's kind of the way it was with Tom Selick
- 24:42Speaker 2: back in the day, Burt Reynolds back in the day.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Like everybody, it was always kind of this fitting thing.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Like it's not like Chevy Chase was gonna go do
- 24:51Speaker 2: something different. Yeah, it was just gonna be these different characters.
- 24:55Speaker 2: But I tell you what, you're guaranteed it's a comedy. Now,
- 24:57Speaker 2: whether it's funny or not, that's different. But but yeah,
- 25:00Speaker 2: I mean I'm sure National and Poon kind of built up.
- 25:03Speaker 2: But I mean I feel like that's the same thing
- 25:04Speaker 2: with John Belushi. I mean, National and Poon played a
- 25:07Speaker 2: big part in kind of his success.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I uh, Chase is known as a pretty complicated guy,
- 25:15Speaker 1: not not always the easiest to work with. I think he.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Yeah, not at all. Matter of fact, there was the
- 25:21Speaker 2: word was is that John Hughes I think produced Christmas Vacation. Yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 2: and Christopher Columbus was going to direct Christmas Vacation. They
- 25:32Speaker 2: didn't get along, but they did not get along, so
- 25:34Speaker 2: John Hughes promised him a different movie, which ended up being.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Home Alone, Crazy How the Stars a line?
- 25:39Speaker 2: And then Jeremiah was the lucky guy to direct this,
- 25:43Speaker 2: which thank god, because he went on to do so much. Yeah,
- 25:46Speaker 2: he went on direct.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Was that before or after Christopher Columbus Sailed the Ocean?
- 25:51Speaker 2: I think it was after, Okay, because Christopher Columbus, if
- 25:54Speaker 2: I'm not mistaken, and this is for the kids out there,
- 25:57Speaker 2: he directed the first Harry Potter movie.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Really right?
- 26:01Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 26:02Speaker 1: Wow, very well. So do you guys have a favorite
- 26:07Speaker 1: Chevy Chase movie?
- 26:07Speaker 2: Then Christmas Vacation? Yeah, There's not much else that I
- 26:13Speaker 2: would say is great.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I mean, I look through he actually has a pretty.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Exclusive in the seventies and eighties, he was the man.
- 26:20Speaker 1: I did not realize. I didn't really realize how many
- 26:25Speaker 1: movies he had he had been in. He was in
- 26:27Speaker 1: Caddy Shack. Yeah, I'm sure some of these are well
- 26:31Speaker 1: known that I've never heard of. He's in Fletch yep,
- 26:35Speaker 1: the Three Amigos.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Yep, see Martin and Marty Short.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Caddy Shack two, there's Christmas Vacation. He was in
- 26:43Speaker 1: Last Action Hero. Oh he had a cameo as himself. Okay,
- 26:46Speaker 1: never mind, that's just one that I saw that I knew.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I know that Last Action Hero.
- 26:51Speaker 1: He was in Dirty Work, which was a fun little
- 26:55Speaker 1: nor McDonald. Yeah, he was in Orange County as the principal.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Yes, I was. I was just gonna say that's the
- 27:01Speaker 2: one I kind of remember him in.
- 27:03Speaker 1: I don't know anything that he has done in the
- 27:06Speaker 1: two thousands beyond Orange County. He has a credit for
- 27:10Speaker 1: Oh He's the Repairman and hot Tub time Machine.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it would be Christmas Vacation.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Think so.
- 27:19Speaker 2: People would argue about Three Amigo's Fletch and stuff, because
- 27:22Speaker 2: I obviously those are big ones. But for me, I
- 27:26Speaker 2: it's I don't know, it's kind of what you it's
- 27:29Speaker 2: kind of everything formulated from like what you know about
- 27:32Speaker 2: Chevy Chase and his comedic chops to SNL Chevy Chase
- 27:36Speaker 2: and even though, like you said, with Vacation European Vacation,
- 27:39Speaker 2: it's not like this is the first time Clark Griswold
- 27:41Speaker 2: has shown up. But to me, it's kind of one
- 27:43Speaker 2: of those where everything just kind of aligns like it should. Yeah,
- 27:48Speaker 2: and no matter how people received it or when it
- 27:51Speaker 2: came out, but it is one of those that I
- 27:53Speaker 2: feel like kind of shows everything that why and when
- 27:57Speaker 2: he was famous Christmas Fak shows it.
- 28:01Speaker 3: There's also a people of a certain generation which includes
- 28:04Speaker 3: us and I think our parents that for me, I
- 28:07Speaker 3: grew up watching this movie because my parents enjoyed it. Yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 3: and now that's continued on for me. And so it'll
- 28:15Speaker 3: be interesting to see, like my kids will they care
- 28:18Speaker 3: about Christmas Vacation.
- 28:19Speaker 2: I feel like your kids will care like in mine too,
- 28:22Speaker 2: is that it'll be this elephant like it'll be these.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Things nostalgic things.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's something you know what.
- 28:29Speaker 1: You're talking about there, Brett is why I ultimately feel
- 28:33Speaker 1: like chevy Chase probably owes his legacy to this movie
- 28:37Speaker 1: because this is something that's going to be passed down
- 28:39Speaker 1: through the generations. Yeah, I think people of a certain
- 28:42Speaker 1: age you look at him and you think of SNL. Obviously,
- 28:48Speaker 1: I think there's probably a good core of younger people
- 28:51Speaker 1: that look at him and think community. I think that
- 28:54Speaker 1: did a lot to really revive his career as well.
- 28:56Speaker 2: I do too.
- 28:57Speaker 1: But Christmas Vacation is the one thing that transit them
- 29:00Speaker 1: both because of what you talked about. It's parents watching it,
- 29:03Speaker 1: passing it down to their kids, and their kids passing
- 29:06Speaker 1: it along to their kids, so on and so forth.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Because this has become such a staple of the season.
- 29:12Speaker 2: And what's funny is if I noticed that, I think
- 29:13Speaker 2: Chevy Chase, I mean, he was only with S and L.
- 29:16Speaker 2: I think maybe one season was he I think he
- 29:18Speaker 2: left the second or third season because that Bill Murray
- 29:20Speaker 2: came in. And I think Bill Murray came in on
- 29:22Speaker 2: the second.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Season and they got into it. They did not when.
- 29:25Speaker 2: He came back, when Chevy came back to host. Oh,
- 29:28Speaker 2: I don't know how long ago that was, but from
- 29:30Speaker 2: my understanding, Chevy left because he was doing these movies
- 29:34Speaker 2: and so he you know, it's kind of like anybody
- 29:36Speaker 2: like I think S and L still does it today.
- 29:39Speaker 2: You kind of have these guys that kind of pop
- 29:42Speaker 2: out of it and they're gonna do it but rarely
- 29:43Speaker 2: does it happen within one year and they're just say, Okay,
- 29:46Speaker 2: forget it, I'm leaving.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Well. And the thing to me that makes this movie
- 29:49Speaker 3: great across generations is, and this is true of a
- 29:55Speaker 3: lot of good comedy movies, there are things that a
- 29:58Speaker 3: kid can find funny about. It's like the squirrel scene
- 30:02Speaker 3: or the sled scene. Yeah, and then there are different
- 30:05Speaker 3: things that adults. While adults may still enjoy those scenes,
- 30:09Speaker 3: there are different things that land differently for adults that
- 30:11Speaker 3: you don't quite understand.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Absolutely, absolutely, so this.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Film was a commercial success. I was kind of surprised
- 30:21Speaker 1: to see that they had a budget of twenty five
- 30:22Speaker 1: million for this movie, because you got to think, like,
- 30:25Speaker 1: it's released in nineteen eighty nine, what what is the
- 30:30Speaker 1: money going for Chevy Chevy Chase at this point?
- 30:33Speaker 2: Probably some probably millions. Randy Quaid maybe he's an Oscar nominee.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. I'm just saying it had a
- 30:43Speaker 1: box office run of seventy three point three million, so
- 30:47Speaker 1: wildly successful, nearly tripled its budget. Mixed reviews from critics
- 30:54Speaker 1: off the bat. Over time, it has kind of grown
- 30:56Speaker 1: a fondness in their hearts. Do you want to take
- 30:59Speaker 1: a wild guest Based on just fifty seven reviews on
- 31:03Speaker 1: Rotten Tomatoes, what the tomato meter is sitting at for
- 31:05Speaker 1: this film?
- 31:06Speaker 3: Oh?
- 31:06Speaker 2: I think it's things like thirty.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Eight, thirty eight. Guess.
- 31:15Speaker 3: I'm gonna guess higher than that. I'm gonna guess like.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Sixty seventy two percent.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Oh really? Oh, I thought hated it.
- 31:22Speaker 1: The audience higher or lower?
- 31:25Speaker 2: What was it? What was it? Seventy seventy two?
- 31:28Speaker 3: I would say higher.
- 31:29Speaker 2: I feel like it's higher, but maybe not that much
- 31:31Speaker 2: like seventy eight, eighty two, seventy eight.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Do you want to venture a number guests Brett for.
- 31:35Speaker 3: The audience, I'm going to guess more like eighty eight
- 31:38Speaker 3: or something.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Eighty six percent? Eighty six okay, based on one hundred
- 31:42Speaker 1: thousand plus reviews.
- 31:43Speaker 2: There you go.
- 31:44Speaker 1: So again one of those films that I think, over
- 31:48Speaker 1: time has really grown found a place in the hearts
- 31:52Speaker 1: of audiences. Uh do you guys have We'll be here
- 31:56Speaker 1: all day? Favorite quotes? Favorite scenes?
- 31:59Speaker 2: There's two that I use all the time. Is He's
- 32:04Speaker 2: just yacting on a bone? Yeah, I love that, all
- 32:07Speaker 2: kinds of different things. And then there's one that I
- 32:09Speaker 2: really like to use when someone says something to my
- 32:14Speaker 2: wife or I say something to my wife and you
- 32:17Speaker 2: don't hear. I say, they want you to say grace,
- 32:23Speaker 2: the blessing, the blessing.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it.
- 32:26Speaker 2: I love to say those two.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Another great scene that plays with kids and adults, because
- 32:31Speaker 3: I remember as a kid her standing up and saying
- 32:33Speaker 3: the play.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Killed.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Yes, Yes, those are the two. I like to use
- 32:39Speaker 2: a lot. You Serious Clark.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I think you serious Clark. That's a good one. I
- 32:44Speaker 1: use that one year round.
- 32:45Speaker 3: I feel like you serious Clark is just in the vernax.
- 32:48Speaker 2: It's funny. It's so funny, even when it's in that
- 32:52Speaker 2: movie where he's like talking about Santon of all the people,
- 32:55Speaker 2: a grown ass man, it's liken't wait, serious Clark.
- 32:59Speaker 3: I'll give two. That one that's well, very well known,
- 33:02Speaker 3: the rant that you started with, the quote from where's
- 33:06Speaker 3: the title of all? There are some things I'm looking
- 33:09Speaker 3: at this. There are some things in this that to
- 33:10Speaker 3: this day, I don't know what they mean. Really. For flushing,
- 33:15Speaker 3: I don't I don't know what that is.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Is that part of his rent?
- 33:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what that's part of what he calls his
- 33:21Speaker 3: ball for flushing stiff legged I'm not quite spotty lipped, wormheaded. Yeah,
- 33:33Speaker 3: it's it's great. And then a maybe an often overlooked
- 33:37Speaker 3: one that I loved is cousin Eddie when they're walking
- 33:40Speaker 3: through I guess it's Walmart or something, so or.
- 33:43Speaker 1: We about to say the same one, you're well, I
- 33:45Speaker 1: don't want to steal it.
- 33:46Speaker 3: If you're gonna go ahead, go ahead your people, you're
- 33:48Speaker 3: a company, kill off all those people in India while back,
- 33:51Speaker 3: and he says, no, we missed out on that one.
- 33:55Speaker 1: It's the same conversation as when I think I know
- 33:57Speaker 1: where when he's asking him about like, what are you
- 34:01Speaker 1: going to do for the kids for Christmas? And Eddie
- 34:03Speaker 1: thinks he's talking about the kids in Walmart and he goes, oh,
- 34:05Speaker 1: these kids can fit for themselves. I say that all
- 34:08Speaker 1: the time too.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I But in that same conversation where he asks like, oh,
- 34:12Speaker 2: you know, we don't have a Christmas and then like
- 34:14Speaker 2: what do you want? And then he gives them money,
- 34:15Speaker 2: it's like, you you buy yourself something real nice to
- 34:18Speaker 2: Clark like he has this whole list ready for him
- 34:20Speaker 2: to buy and he as he's packing on like fifteen
- 34:23Speaker 2: pounds of dog food.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Here's a list alphabetically.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Anyway, you get yourself something real, nice, Clark, if.
- 34:31Speaker 1: You don't mind, Clark, I'd like to get you something real.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Yes, that's another quotable line.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Yes, I like it. It's not a quote or anything,
- 34:42Speaker 2: but I like where he messes with the windmill and
- 34:43Speaker 2: then he just kind of shrugs like he didn't understand
- 34:46Speaker 2: what that was for during the eggnog and he's just
- 34:49Speaker 2: like oh, and then like.
- 34:50Speaker 1: I like that the way he's dressed, I mean, cousin.
- 34:53Speaker 2: That that's turtleneck where you can see right through.
- 34:55Speaker 3: It is funny in a in a movie that is
- 34:58Speaker 3: full of quotable lines, and this rewatchable scene after rewatchable scene.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Cousin Eddie is a showstopper.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, he is MVP of the film.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, I mean for a lot of things he
- 35:08Speaker 2: does bring out. Yeah I do, I do. I would yeah,
- 35:15Speaker 2: I would say so.
- 35:16Speaker 3: It's it's at that level of things are not going
- 35:20Speaker 3: well with this Christmas vacation, but when he shows up,
- 35:24Speaker 3: it rocket ships off to what the movie becomes well.
- 35:27Speaker 2: And even like when he goes out next, like like
- 35:30Speaker 2: if he could like save that chair, maybe he'll take it.
- 35:34Speaker 1: And he's quality item. He's like he.
- 35:38Speaker 2: I didn't want to some about basically but basically sold everything,
- 35:41Speaker 2: and like they live in that trailer like but nothing's
- 35:45Speaker 2: ever really that surprising that they've that this has happened
- 35:50Speaker 2: to them. And he talks about like where like her eye,
- 35:53Speaker 2: like his daughter's eyes, probably because it was a mule
- 35:57Speaker 2: or something kicked her. Yeah, and I'm just like this
- 35:59Speaker 2: is so like but it's so ridiculous, but it's funny.
- 36:01Speaker 3: I don't remember the order, but it's fell down a well.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Isico cross got kicked by the mule?
- 36:06Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 36:07Speaker 3: They come on.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like oh, it's like it's like when he says, uh,
- 36:13Speaker 1: somebody's talking about joining the circus, you must.
- 36:16Speaker 4: Be yeah, oh yeah, this isn't even really a quote,
- 36:23Speaker 4: but I just love how like they want to check
- 36:25Speaker 4: those lights, and Rusty's like, oh man, I got homework
- 36:28Speaker 4: the pigs and he just wanders off.
- 36:31Speaker 1: I like the I don't remember if it's the aunt,
- 36:34Speaker 1: great grandma, whatever, the old lady is. She's like, I'll
- 36:38Speaker 1: give you a whole quarter to yeah, rub my bunion
- 36:42Speaker 1: or something.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Yeah. Clark's mom, aunt Bethany, is also in the running
- 36:48Speaker 3: for m v P that's true. Yeah, every scene of
- 36:51Speaker 3: her great.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, and you know she is uh, she's Shirley Temple.
- 36:57Speaker 3: No, yeah, I never knew that ever knew that.
- 37:00Speaker 2: She is the O G Shirley TIMI wow. But I
- 37:04Speaker 2: do love the way she talks with that brode AND's like,
- 37:06Speaker 2: oh my god, your cat.
- 37:07Speaker 1: She wrapped up her, damn cat.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Damn cat. And you can tell it's a real performance
- 37:12Speaker 2: from Chevy Chase because he moves that box yeah and
- 37:15Speaker 2: acts like there's something and I'm like, he's he's with
- 37:19Speaker 2: it's with it. But it's funny.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Let's get into some letterboxed reviews, because this is you
- 37:24Speaker 1: get into some of these iconic films and there's some
- 37:27Speaker 1: some really good stuff. I feel like the mark of like,
- 37:30Speaker 1: you know, you've got a good movie that has stood
- 37:33Speaker 1: the test of time, it lives in people's hearts. When
- 37:36Speaker 1: the letterboxed reviews are just series of quote, oh yeah
- 37:41Speaker 1: from the film, But there are there are some funny
- 37:43Speaker 1: ones in here. Russman gives it a three and a
- 37:46Speaker 1: half and just says they didn't even go on vacation.
- 37:50Speaker 2: That's true. It's a staycation, is what it is.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a funny one from Sean three and
- 37:57Speaker 1: a half stars, an insightful critique exploring the plight of
- 38:02Speaker 1: the shrinking middle class in post Reagan suburban communities at
- 38:06Speaker 1: the expense of encroaching globalization and billionaire brain poison. In
- 38:11Speaker 1: many ways, a movie for our time. Oh good squirrel
- 38:14Speaker 1: bit too.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Wow, that's a lot of thought there.
- 38:19Speaker 1: He's just yacking on a bone. Here's here's a good
- 38:22Speaker 1: one we missed. Hey, Griswold, where do you think you're
- 38:24Speaker 1: gonna put a tree that big? And Clark says, bend
- 38:27Speaker 1: over and I'll show.
- 38:28Speaker 2: You talking to you?
- 38:30Speaker 1: And why is the carpet all wet? Todd, I don't know, Margo.
- 38:35Speaker 1: I love this one.
- 38:36Speaker 3: This is.
- 38:39Speaker 1: This is from Den of Geeks four and a half stars.
- 38:42Speaker 1: This walked so Joker could run. There is a tideline
- 38:48Speaker 1: where Clark Griswold becomes the Joker.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Yes, it makes sense.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Yeah, she wrapped up her damn cat. We talked about
- 38:55Speaker 1: that one. Oh, here we go, Here we go. She
- 39:00Speaker 1: falls down a well, her eyes go cross, she gets
- 39:02Speaker 1: kicked by a mule. They go back. I don't know.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Five out of five yep, I don't know. Yeah, this
- 39:13Speaker 1: look I want Clark to get his in ground pool
- 39:15Speaker 1: just like the rest of you. But let's be honest,
- 39:17Speaker 1: for a moment, Clark's bonus, even if it's more than
- 39:20Speaker 1: he dreamed of, we'll be spent repairing his damn house.
- 39:22Speaker 2: That's true. That is very true.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Oh man.
- 39:27Speaker 2: I also find like there's times where, like where they're leaving,
- 39:29Speaker 2: they leave them in the attic. He's like, well, I can't.
- 39:32Speaker 2: I have to take medicine for my back. And just
- 39:35Speaker 2: like I can't imagine in some any shape or form
- 39:40Speaker 2: where we're just not gonna talk to the person of
- 39:43Speaker 2: the house and we're all gonna get in the car
- 39:46Speaker 2: and drive off and maybe they'll meet us later. That
- 39:50Speaker 2: sounds that's the most ridiculous thing in the movie.
- 39:53Speaker 3: You know, the movie has the perfect you were talking
- 39:56Speaker 3: about the attic scene, and you know, then he gets
- 39:58Speaker 3: trapped up there. He watches the old movie, the old
- 40:01Speaker 3: home films, And I think that's part of what keeps
- 40:05Speaker 3: the staying power too, is that it does have this
- 40:08Speaker 3: sentimental nature about it that you know, you combine our
- 40:15Speaker 3: nostalgic watching it with generations, well that was sentimental too,
- 40:21Speaker 3: with the kind of sentimental feelings in the film, and
- 40:25Speaker 3: it all works.
- 40:26Speaker 2: And I really think people should they I don't think
- 40:30Speaker 2: it's played at all. But that song that's played up
- 40:33Speaker 2: in the attic is Ray Charles's Spirit of Christmas. I
- 40:37Speaker 2: love that song, but it is never played on any
- 40:42Speaker 2: of the stations that kind of run at twenty four
- 40:44Speaker 2: to seven once Thanksgivings over. But I really love I
- 40:48Speaker 2: love that song because it is He's like, why can't
- 40:51Speaker 2: Christmas be every day of the year? And I really
- 40:54Speaker 2: love that song.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Well, and there's a on that note, there's a handful
- 40:57Speaker 3: of songs in that movie that if I hear.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Them all that I think if that one, and I
- 41:03Speaker 2: love the opening, the whole animated one, like Christmas Vague.
- 41:07Speaker 2: It's it's so catchy.
- 41:09Speaker 1: It's crazy because it's something that this film has gotten
- 41:12Speaker 1: a lot of praise for. From a critical standpoint, has
- 41:15Speaker 1: been like, well, the soundtrack is the music's great in this.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Film sings that opening song, She's What's something divine?
- 41:22Speaker 1: Uh something, She's She's she's very famous.
- 41:25Speaker 2: And she's been like.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Joy divine Randolph.
- 41:30Speaker 2: No, no, okay close, but yeah it's Mava Staples.
- 41:34Speaker 1: That's love the Staple Singers. Yeah, I was going to
- 41:37Speaker 1: say Staple sisters.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but I love I love that music.
- 41:43Speaker 1: So that was something like it was lauded for, but
- 41:46Speaker 1: they never released a soundtrack.
- 41:48Speaker 2: That's bullshit.
- 41:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you would think about that leaving money
- 41:52Speaker 1: on the table right there. Yeah, so one of the
- 41:56Speaker 1: all time classics. I don't know, do you guys have
- 41:59Speaker 1: any harding thoughts we're wrapping things up here.
- 42:03Speaker 2: I like when Beverly dan Angelo does a kiss to
- 42:06Speaker 2: Chevy Chase's buttch in. Yeah, it's very very sweet. It's
- 42:14Speaker 2: just funny. Like when that road rage incident where the
- 42:16Speaker 2: movie starts.
- 42:17Speaker 1: It really is to finish. I feel like we're laughing.
- 42:21Speaker 2: We're having a ridiculous Everyone knows there's no way they
- 42:25Speaker 2: put a They could have pulled that Christmas tree out
- 42:27Speaker 2: of the ground and put it on that car. It's impossible,
- 42:31Speaker 2: but they did it. I get it. The way the
- 42:34Speaker 2: kids act, the way the brother and sister act when
- 42:36Speaker 2: the family comes in. I've made a comparison. When we
- 42:40Speaker 2: host stuff, it's like it's like Christmas vacation where everyone's
- 42:43Speaker 2: at the door and then there is no peace and
- 42:46Speaker 2: everyone's talking and everyone's scriping, and you know, we've all
- 42:49Speaker 2: been there and done that. But but there's also a
- 42:54Speaker 2: real like love for the holidays when the family's together,
- 43:00Speaker 2: and we've had this with with my with our family
- 43:03Speaker 2: is like you get up and there is like the
- 43:05Speaker 2: siblings are there, like everybody's there, and it is there
- 43:08Speaker 2: is something you know, there's something nostalgic about it and
- 43:11Speaker 2: something that's it just feels nice. But but yeah, I
- 43:15Speaker 2: just love like the when he is talking to the
- 43:18Speaker 2: I think she might be she may have been a
- 43:20Speaker 2: real life model. But when he's at the mall and
- 43:22Speaker 2: he keeps talking about nipples and stuff and like his
- 43:25Speaker 2: laughing and like yes, he's looking at him like, oh
- 43:27Speaker 2: my god. And then like he has that like I
- 43:30Speaker 2: think of that song every time when he sees like
- 43:32Speaker 2: he imagines the pulling that woman in there she's about
- 43:35Speaker 2: to reveal her top and saying that. Yeah. There's just
- 43:41Speaker 2: so many things associated with that movie now that that
- 43:44Speaker 2: maybe not even before you even could remember, but now
- 43:48Speaker 2: it's like, oh, yeah, I remember that because it played
- 43:50Speaker 2: there and this was this and.
- 43:51Speaker 3: But you're at a store and you hear the Hawaiian
- 43:53Speaker 3: Chris yeah, and you're immediately watching that scene in your
- 43:56Speaker 3: mind again.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Yeah, And like I said, the opening of it with
- 43:59Speaker 2: the anime and stuff with the Christmas vacation.
- 44:02Speaker 3: Well you mentioned it, but you know, as you get
- 44:05Speaker 3: older and as you're the adult putting these kind of
- 44:09Speaker 3: things on, dealing with the chaos of them, it just
- 44:12Speaker 3: it lands in a different way. And that's part of
- 44:15Speaker 3: why it works.
- 44:16Speaker 2: And that's it too, because you start to identify who
- 44:20Speaker 2: is who in this situation, like I don't know, but
- 44:25Speaker 2: uncle whoever where he can't help but light a cigarette
- 44:28Speaker 2: and lights it and he's like, that was an ugly
- 44:29Speaker 2: tree anyway. But there's also those moments and you were
- 44:34Speaker 2: talking about where like Chevy Chase's dad is talking to
- 44:37Speaker 2: him and there is that there is that sense of
- 44:40Speaker 2: tradition and like, no, I think it's your Like there
- 44:44Speaker 2: is this kind of reminder of what it should be
- 44:47Speaker 2: about and kind of how you can get caught up
- 44:49Speaker 2: in it, which a lot of the Christmas movies are
- 44:52Speaker 2: kind of like that. But but I thought that was
- 44:54Speaker 2: nice too to you to.
- 44:55Speaker 1: Your point, Brett. It's echoed in one of Ellen's comments
- 44:59Speaker 1: when she says, I don't know what to say, but
- 45:00Speaker 1: it's Christmas and we're all in misery.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Yes, And what's the one where they're like, hey, I
- 45:05Speaker 2: share a bish, I might have to share a better
- 45:07Speaker 2: with your father. Yeah, and the and you know what's
- 45:10Speaker 2: funny is when I was younger, I didn't quite understand
- 45:13Speaker 2: the the gag of it. But when he's flipping through
- 45:18Speaker 2: the magazine and those pages get stuck, I didn't think
- 45:21Speaker 2: of the tree part. Yeah, but it is quite funny.
- 45:24Speaker 3: That is what's great about good like long standing comedy,
- 45:28Speaker 3: the way that those things kind of unfold over.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Yeah, And that's kind of where you say, where like
- 45:33Speaker 2: it kind of separates, like the kids laughing and then
- 45:35Speaker 2: the adults are like, yeah, like okay, I get it
- 45:38Speaker 2: and stuff, and especially like dealing with him and Ellen's
- 45:42Speaker 2: like kind of you know, uh, marriage and kind of
- 45:45Speaker 2: what they're what she puts up with and what he's
- 45:48Speaker 2: trying to do and show off and try to sit
- 45:51Speaker 2: with the lights and everything else and give this you know,
- 45:53Speaker 2: elaborate demonstration.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Do you guys have a mount rushmore of Christmas movies?
- 45:59Speaker 1: I've got mine. And while while you guys think I
- 46:03Speaker 1: would give honorable mentions, it's not a Christmas movie. I
- 46:07Speaker 1: know what you're gonna say. It's not a Christmas movie
- 46:09Speaker 1: just because we watch it every Christmas time. Eight Crazy
- 46:12Speaker 1: Nights is technically a honikael So which is also there's
- 46:18Speaker 1: a I don't remember which publication, but somebody wrote a
- 46:21Speaker 1: big think piece about like it says something about Honkah
- 46:25Speaker 1: that this is our best Honkkah movie. I digress. I
- 46:30Speaker 1: would also give honorable mentions to Love Actually, which I
- 46:32Speaker 1: watched for the first time this past Christmas season, The Holiday,
- 46:36Speaker 1: which is one that my wife loves that we sit
- 46:38Speaker 1: and watch every season, and a new addition to the rotation,
- 46:42Speaker 1: The Holdovers.
- 46:43Speaker 3: Yes, great, glad you brought that one. It's not on
- 46:46Speaker 3: my Mount Rushmore, but it's close.
- 46:49Speaker 1: My Mount Rushmore would be yeah, and I'm I'm with you.
- 46:52Speaker 1: I almost put it on mine too. Christmas Vacation. I
- 46:56Speaker 1: like the weird Jim Carrey Christmas Carol, the anime one
- 47:00Speaker 1: that's like super trippy. I like watching that really close
- 47:03Speaker 1: to Christmas. The Polar Express is online, and then the
- 47:08Speaker 1: fourth one would go to the night before.
- 47:12Speaker 2: I think mine would be the Santa Claus Christmas Vacation
- 47:17Speaker 2: Polar Express and the Holdovers is very close and I
- 47:24Speaker 2: just watched it. It's become somewhat of a tradition now
- 47:26Speaker 2: because I really enjoy it, and it's close, but I
- 47:30Speaker 2: really as far as just things that's recent and the
- 47:33Speaker 2: way it's done. I really like Klaus.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Klaus is good too.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Yeah, So I think those would be my top four
- 47:39Speaker 2: where like I want to, I must watch them every year.
- 47:46Speaker 3: My Christmas Vacation is on my list. Probably my number
- 47:49Speaker 3: one is Home Alone from A. I do like Home
- 47:52Speaker 3: from A like can watch it with the family, and
- 47:56Speaker 3: I would I'm cheating, but I would include both Home
- 47:58Speaker 3: Alone one and two that both of those are kind
- 48:01Speaker 3: of equally good to me. A movie that's really become
- 48:06Speaker 3: one of my favorite movies just in general is It's
- 48:09Speaker 3: a Wonderful Life. I think there's a movie that's aged
- 48:12Speaker 3: really well, and I love that one for a lot
- 48:16Speaker 3: of the same reason. It's not hilarity but just nostalgia
- 48:20Speaker 3: and that kind of thing. And then I didn't see
- 48:22Speaker 3: this until I don't know, seven or eight years ago,
- 48:25Speaker 3: but I'm gonna say die hard. I watch it every
- 48:28Speaker 3: single Christmas.
- 48:29Speaker 2: I love I have not seen it forever, but you
- 48:31Speaker 2: know what the thing is, and I feel like maybe
- 48:34Speaker 2: that's why some people have come around on Christmas Vacation.
- 48:36Speaker 2: When it first came out is that there is some
- 48:39Speaker 2: kind of lenient scene. If it's a Christmas movie. There's
- 48:43Speaker 2: a movie I watch every Christmas at some point. It's
- 48:47Speaker 2: not a good movie. It's a dumb movie. I want
- 48:49Speaker 2: to say, it's like five or six percent rotten. But
- 48:51Speaker 2: I will watch Christmas with the Cranks. I will watch
- 48:55Speaker 2: def To Hall's which is a not a very good movie,
- 48:58Speaker 2: but Danny DeVito and Matthew Broad But it's if it's Christmas,
- 49:02Speaker 2: it's fine. And it's the same one of what is
- 49:04Speaker 2: the it's a sequel Bad Moms Christmas or something like
- 49:09Speaker 2: that has like Susan Saranda, but Kristen Bells in it. Yeah,
- 49:13Speaker 2: and Catherine Han's in it. I think put Daddy's Home
- 49:15Speaker 2: two in the Daddy's Home Tomb is one which that
- 49:17Speaker 2: thermostat argument makes me laugh every single time. But but yeah,
- 49:23Speaker 2: those the the ones that you mentioned. I love watching
- 49:26Speaker 2: Home alone. I do like that one that that's a
- 49:28Speaker 2: tough one.
- 49:31Speaker 1: I surprised I liked you.
- 49:32Speaker 2: I like Jingle all the way, and I like that
- 49:34Speaker 2: kind of element of where you have to go find
- 49:36Speaker 2: this one a toy. I like that to me, is
- 49:40Speaker 2: is fun.
- 49:40Speaker 3: But and that one's very of our era as Yeah,
- 49:45Speaker 3: it is, especially for kids, that way of Christmas shoppings disappear.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and if not, it's not it's not as simple
- 49:53Speaker 2: as it was now. It's like like this you know,
- 49:55Speaker 2: PlayStation seven that's like a thousand dollars. Like it's not
- 49:58Speaker 2: fun when like you would go and find a furber,
- 50:01Speaker 2: tickle me Elmo or something or but the like I
- 50:08Speaker 2: remember when like I stood in line and raced to
- 50:12Speaker 2: get the Power Rangers. It wasn't even Christmas, but like
- 50:15Speaker 2: there's that fever of like this toy and it's the
- 50:19Speaker 2: thing these days. It's all tech stuff and it's just
- 50:22Speaker 2: expensive as hell. But but I love that like he's
- 50:26Speaker 2: just run like that's that's the whole thing of it.
- 50:30Speaker 2: But but I will watch almost anything as far as
- 50:33Speaker 2: related to Christmas and like the old school, you know,
- 50:36Speaker 2: Rudolph and stuff. My son loves the o G.
- 50:41Speaker 3: We have to give me any any Grinch property. I'm
- 50:45Speaker 3: good with the original, the n them Grinch, the.
- 50:50Speaker 2: New my son loved. I mean, And we will pass
- 50:56Speaker 2: this house that has like you know where they have
- 50:58Speaker 2: the lights, but one of them has the Grinch's face
- 51:00Speaker 2: on their garage door. During it, he will we will
- 51:03Speaker 2: drive by and he will say no, Gritch, no, snow
- 51:06Speaker 2: Like he's almost like he's waiting for it to come back,
- 51:09Speaker 2: but he knows he's not come assume. But but and
- 51:12Speaker 2: we watch it. I don't know how many times. But
- 51:14Speaker 2: but there's stuff like that in Frosty. He loves to.
- 51:16Speaker 2: So there's things like that that I that that is
- 51:20Speaker 2: fun to watch, and I really do love to. I'm
- 51:25Speaker 2: not like Stony. I don't have stuff for seasons, but
- 51:28Speaker 2: I will say I do try to watch like scary
- 51:31Speaker 2: stuff during Halloween, and a lot of it's rather it's
- 51:33Speaker 2: monster House, hocus Pocus, which, again, hocus Pocus is not
- 51:36Speaker 2: a good movie, but it's just something that people watch. Sorry,
- 51:40Speaker 2: it's not it's I tell Brittany and my my sister
- 51:43Speaker 2: in law love and and they're like, oh, it's great,
- 51:47Speaker 2: and I'm like, but but it's not good. Like can
- 51:49Speaker 2: we agree that it's not a good movie? List Pocus
- 51:52Speaker 2: to proves that point that they haven't gotten any better.
- 51:55Speaker 3: To me, it's like and it circles back to Christmas Vacation.
