- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Hey, what's up? This is Tom Arnold, and you're listening
- 0:06Speaker 2: to Tech Talk Radio. They're really great, and I love them. Hey,
- 0:10Speaker 2: how about a copy of Windows?
- 0:11Speaker 1: Can I get a laptop? It's another episode of Tech
- 0:15Speaker 1: Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm Sean DeWeerd.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And I'm Justin Lemme. How are you guys doing? It's
- 0:20Speaker 1: good to see you again. Back from another whirlwind vacation
- 0:23Speaker 1: for you? Well, it was a vacation, but it was
- 0:26Speaker 1: also before that it was a work trip, and then
- 0:28Speaker 1: it was a school event, and yeah, so I've been
- 0:31Speaker 1: out for a while. Tell the class all about your
- 0:34Speaker 1: trip to, now you went to Devil's Tower, which The
- 0:38Speaker 1: only reason I know that, of course, is Close Encounters
- 0:41Speaker 1: of the Third Kind. Do they still make a big
- 0:43Speaker 1: deal about it there? Oh, yeah. I mean, I'll tell
- 0:46Speaker 1: you about the whole trip. But yeah, of course, as
- 0:48Speaker 1: soon as you go to the gift stores, there's like
- 0:50Speaker 1: two gift stores that are right there at the base
- 0:52Speaker 1: of the tower. Everything is alien themed.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Do they have a cardboard cutout of Richard Dreyfuss? Yeah. Yeah. No,
- 1:02Speaker 1: they don't have that. But no, everything is like, it's
- 1:04Speaker 1: like cheap alien stuff. Like, you know, little green men
- 1:07Speaker 1: and saucer-shaped spaceships and things like that. Yeah, so they
- 1:14Speaker 1: definitely still lean into it. For listeners who don't know,
- 1:16Speaker 1: Devil's Tower is in Wyoming, right?
- 1:18Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Wyoming, right?
- 1:19Speaker 2: Wyoming.
- 1:20Speaker 1: That's the scene, that big scene in Close Encounters of
- 1:24Speaker 1: the Third Kind where Melinda Dillon and Richard Dreyfuss, they converge.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And they, you know, meet the aliens. And it's there
- 1:32Speaker 1: that that happens. And apparently it's supposed to be... I've
- 1:35Speaker 1: never seen the movie, so... What? What? Aliens, right? Yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I know. I've never seen it. Sean, do you believe this?
- 1:44Speaker 1: You've never seen Close Encounters? What? Oh, man. No, I
- 1:49Speaker 1: haven't seen it. No, I haven't. But I wanted to
- 1:52Speaker 1: show Misa the movie, but she thought it was a
- 1:54Speaker 1: horror movie.
- 1:55Speaker 2: It's not a horror movie. No, no.
- 1:58Speaker 1: You know, I figured so, but no, they do lean
- 2:00Speaker 1: into it, but no going, going back to my trip. Yeah.
- 2:02Speaker 1: So we, um, my mom was camping out there with
- 2:06Speaker 1: her sister. They have this little, they have this little
- 2:08Speaker 1: vintage trailer camper. It's probably 15, 17 feet long. I mean,
- 2:14Speaker 1: it's a really small camera, but it's from 1978. It's
- 2:16Speaker 1: and it's, it's like, it's got the original paint and
- 2:20Speaker 1: everything about it. Like it is so vintage and people
- 2:22Speaker 1: like drive by and they're like, oh my God, your
- 2:24Speaker 1: trailer is so cute. But anyway, they were camping up there.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And we said, Misa's like, I really want to go
- 2:29Speaker 1: see Devil's Tower. I want to go. I've never been.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I was like, all right, fine. We'll go. So Friday afternoon,
- 2:36Speaker 1: you know, Misa gets off early. Soon as she gets home,
- 2:39Speaker 1: we hit the road. We got our stuff packed up.
- 2:41Speaker 1: We hit the road. Our goal was to get to Wheatland, Wyoming,
- 2:44Speaker 1: which was about two and a half hours from Denver North.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It was raining almost the entire time. We did stop
- 2:52Speaker 1: by Bucky's up there. You know, Bucky's the big gas
- 2:55Speaker 1: station convenience store thing, right? Still haven't been yet. Yeah. Oh,
- 2:59Speaker 1: this is our, like our fifth time being at Bucky's.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So it was so funny because we pulled into Bucky's
- 3:05Speaker 1: and I'm like getting gas. And I tell me scenario,
- 3:08Speaker 1: I was like, go inside, do your shopping. I'm going
- 3:09Speaker 1: to come in there. And we're just going to grab
- 3:12Speaker 1: our stuff and we're going to go. After I got
- 3:14Speaker 1: the gas, I parked the car. I ran into Bucky's
- 3:18Speaker 1: like it was an episode of Guy's Grocery Games. Oh, wow.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I walked in there like jerky wall. Where is it?
- 3:24Speaker 2: Bam, bam, bam.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Jerky candy wall. Where's the candy?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Bam, bam, bam.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Drink. Got it. Let's go. Boom. Out the door.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I mean, I made a very quick trip because I
- 3:34Speaker 1: knew exactly what I wanted and exactly where it was.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I heard you could spend an hour or two in there. Oh, easily.
- 3:39Speaker 1: If you, like, don't know what you're getting.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Easily.
- 3:41Speaker 1: It's like a mini target. We got to make a rule.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Because Sean has the Buc-ee's pajamas. You got to get them.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And I'll go to the one in Arizona. I'll get Buc-ee's.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And we'll do a show in our Buc-ee's pajamas. Deal.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I will pay for it. I will pay for each
- 3:56Speaker 2: of us to have our own. I don't care.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Wow. Okay. I'll take you up on that, Sean.
- 4:01Speaker 2: That would be incredible.
- 4:03Speaker 1: That's great. No, I will do that. No, it's about
- 4:05Speaker 1: 45 minutes north of us. So we go to Buc-ee's.
- 4:08Speaker 1: We get back on the road. We're going up the road.
- 4:10Speaker 1: We get to Wheatland, Wyoming, thankfully. But it was dark.
- 4:15Speaker 1: And I don't know if any of our listeners have
- 4:17Speaker 1: ever driven in Wyoming after dark. It is pitch black. Like,
- 4:22Speaker 1: it is scary. Right. Because, and especially when it's raining,
- 4:27Speaker 1: I forgot to mention this. At Bucky's, Misa was about
- 4:31Speaker 1: to go check out, and she's like, oh, my God,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I forgot my wallet at home. She was supposed to
- 4:39Speaker 1: drive half the way. Guess who drove the entire way
- 4:42Speaker 1: there and back? Me. Well, don't you carry, if you
- 4:46Speaker 1: carry the ID in your smartphone. She didn't have it either. Oh, boy. Nope.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Didn't have that either.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Yep.
- 4:53Speaker 1: So yeah, I had to drive the whole way. So yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I drove to Wheatland. We stayed the night. It was fine.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Next morning we get on the road. We drive another
- 5:00Speaker 1: three and a half hours, get to devil's tower. We
- 5:02Speaker 1: meet my mom, my aunt, uh, my aunt's kid, uh, uh, and,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and her daughters or our kids, daughter and son. And
- 5:10Speaker 1: then my other cousins, uh, came from rapid city. They
- 5:14Speaker 1: met us there. So we had this like little mini
- 5:16Speaker 1: family gathering and, We had lunch. We had dinner. We
- 5:19Speaker 1: did a walk around Devil's Tower. It took us about
- 5:22Speaker 1: an hour and a half because the kids kept wanting
- 5:24Speaker 1: to climb on rocks and things like that. We saw
- 5:27Speaker 1: some mountain climbers, the guys that were actually scaling the
- 5:31Speaker 1: side of Devil's Tower. Have you ever heard of Devil's
- 5:33Speaker 1: Tower or ever seen it? Just look up a picture
- 5:35Speaker 1: of Devil's Tower. What it is is an ancient volcano
- 5:40Speaker 1: that all that's left is the lava column that when
- 5:44Speaker 1: it last erupted... The lava column just kind of cooled
- 5:48Speaker 1: in place and in the mountain around it dissolved. And
- 5:53Speaker 1: so all that's left is a giant column of lava
- 5:56Speaker 1: sticking up off the ground. I don't know, Justin. Yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I like it. But I've always I've always believed it
- 6:03Speaker 1: to be an alien landing spot. Not some volcano thing.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Probably true, too. But science has said otherwise. But you
- 6:11Speaker 1: know what? If you want to believe that, I mean,
- 6:13Speaker 1: I'm with you. I'm with you. Because I think that
- 6:15Speaker 1: could also be it. But anyway, so then Sunday morning,
- 6:18Speaker 1: we get back on the road. We drive all the
- 6:19Speaker 1: way back. I drove six and a half hours straight.
- 6:21Speaker 1: We got back in Denver around 3.30 p.m. on Sunday.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Still able to watch that amazing Broncos game. Yeah. Against the, yeah.
- 6:33Speaker 1: against the, uh, the Rams there. And yeah, so it was,
- 6:36Speaker 1: it was a good one, but I have a very
- 6:38Speaker 1: big announcement to make. Really? You've been drafted, but drafted
- 6:42Speaker 1: by the, by the Rams. They need your help. Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Drafted by the Rams. Yeah. I'll be the kicker. Um,
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's not necessarily technology related like the show would be,
- 6:53Speaker 1: but it is definitely relatable to at least one of
- 6:56Speaker 1: us during this trip. Eric, really discovered his love of
- 7:03Speaker 1: the outdoors. And I've always loved the outdoors. And Misa
- 7:10Speaker 1: has always wanted to do more outdoor stuff. I have
- 7:17Speaker 1: convinced Misa to buy an RV. Whoa.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Wow.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You're going all in.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Oh, Sean.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Look at Sean. Road trip.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I'm ready.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Sean's happy. Sean, let me ask you. Do you have
- 7:31Speaker 1: an RV or do you have a fifth wheel?
- 7:33Speaker 2: I have a bumper pull tow behind.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Oh, bumper. Okay. So, okay. You have, okay. So, we
- 7:38Speaker 1: were kind of thinking about, but we don't have a
- 7:40Speaker 1: vehicle to be able to tow that. Now, yeah, the
- 7:44Speaker 1: Tesla can tow a little bit, but you know, living
- 7:46Speaker 1: in the Rocky mountains, I'm like, I'm not trying to
- 7:48Speaker 1: tow a trailer up the, you know, the side of
- 7:51Speaker 1: a mountain with a Tesla. No, if we were going
- 7:54Speaker 1: to do it, we were just going to go straight RV.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah. But the questions that I have, and this might
- 8:02Speaker 1: be too much even for this show, but what kind
- 8:05Speaker 1: of things should I be looking for in an RV?
- 8:11Speaker 1: And is it true that the best time to buy
- 8:14Speaker 1: an RV would be like, December and January when not
- 8:19Speaker 1: a lot of people are looking. They're trying to get
- 8:21Speaker 1: rid of their stock for the next year. Because I
- 8:24Speaker 1: was thinking about going to Camping World, the great American
- 8:27Speaker 1: RV show, and doing it. But they say that is
- 8:30Speaker 1: the worst thing you can do. Yeah. Sean's giving the
- 8:33Speaker 1: thumbs down on that one. Yeah. Tell me, Sean. Fill
- 8:35Speaker 1: me in.
- 8:37Speaker 2: It all depends. You should just come here and I
- 8:40Speaker 2: can take you to every... major national RV dealers factory lot.
- 8:45Speaker 2: You could probably just drive one off the lot from here.
- 8:47Speaker 2: So for those of you, so those of you who
- 8:50Speaker 2: don't remember where I live, I live in Granger, Indiana,
- 8:53Speaker 2: which is next door neighbor to Elkhart County, which produces
- 8:57Speaker 2: damn near 95% of the world's RVs.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Wow.
- 9:01Speaker 2: So, um, the camper that I have was made like
- 9:05Speaker 2: within it with a stone's throw from my house, like
- 9:07Speaker 2: 15 minutes from my house is where my camper was made. So, um,
- 9:12Speaker 2: We're talking.
- 9:12Speaker 1: About the big brands too? Coleman, Jayco.
- 9:15Speaker 2: All of them. All of them.
- 9:16Speaker 1: What is considered to be like top of the line
- 9:19Speaker 1: when it comes to, you know, your RV? I mean,
- 9:22Speaker 1: Winnebago has always been the name, right?
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Winnebago is just kind of the, everybody knew Winnebago.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Winnebago is the Kleenex of RVs, right?
- 9:31Speaker 1: Well, you think of Shazam. He drove around in a Winnebago.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Remember that?
- 9:35Speaker 2: It's a motorhome, right? Everybody thinks a motorhome, it's a Winnebago. No,
- 9:38Speaker 2: Winnebago is just a, it's a brand.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I mean, there's so many. You can spend as little
- 9:44Speaker 2: or as much as you want, right?
- 9:45Speaker 1: Well, see, I'm looking for a Class C. I'm looking
- 9:48Speaker 1: for a Class C, which is what they would consider
- 9:51Speaker 1: an actual RV. Now, I'm not looking for a Class A,
- 9:54Speaker 1: which is like a, like one of those motor buses,
- 9:57Speaker 1: you know, like the big, huge million dollar ones. I'm
- 10:00Speaker 1: not looking for a class. A, a class B I've
- 10:03Speaker 1: quickly come to learn is more of like a camper van, uh,
- 10:07Speaker 1: That's a class B. A class C, like a Mercedes
- 10:10Speaker 1: Sprinter van or whatever, that's a class B. A class
- 10:13Speaker 1: C would be like a Winnebago, a Coleman, a Jayco,
- 10:18Speaker 1: things like that. That's what I'm looking for, a class C.
- 10:20Speaker 1: All I know is that I need it to sleep
- 10:22Speaker 1: four or five, and I need it to be on
- 10:27Speaker 1: either a Mercedes chassis or a Ford chassis. I'm not
- 10:30Speaker 1: dealing with Chevy. And I'm sorry if you like Chevy.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I'm not doing it. But I want it to be
- 10:36Speaker 1: on a Mercedes or a Ford chassis, and it needs
- 10:38Speaker 1: to have a separate shower and a toilet. It cannot
- 10:42Speaker 1: have a wet bath. Oh, yeah.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. In those types that you're looking for, there's
- 10:48Speaker 2: going to be an enclosed shower with a toilet, right?
- 10:51Speaker 2: It's not going to be the largest, most luxurious bathroom.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Oh, I don't care.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Um, I'll have to send you some pictures of my
- 10:57Speaker 2: parents cause they have a class, whatever he said. I
- 10:59Speaker 2: can't remember what you just said. For what you want.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And there's a couple of factors that you would want
- 11:03Speaker 2: to look into. And I'm excited to talk about this
- 11:05Speaker 2: cause I love camping and I love my, my dad
- 11:07Speaker 2: really is the one you want to talk to cause
- 11:08Speaker 2: he would, he would be the genius behind this.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Maybe we should do a camping talk.
- 11:13Speaker 2: We should.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 2: There are tons of our, there are tons of podcasts
- 11:17Speaker 2: about camping.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Um, but you were looking at ones with slide outs.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I don't necessarily know if I need a
- 11:26Speaker 1: slide out, but maybe.
- 11:28Speaker 2: If you wanted to sleep four or five, you're looking
- 11:30Speaker 2: at a slide out. Comfortable.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Probably.
- 11:32Speaker 2: My parents have, both of theirs have had slide outs.
- 11:35Speaker 2: And they're comfortable to sleep in.
- 11:37Speaker 1: The.
- 11:38Speaker 2: You're going to have a bed, so for like you
- 11:41Speaker 2: and me, sir.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Yeah, of course.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And then you're typically going to have a couch that
- 11:44Speaker 2: folds into a bed, and the dinette will collapse into
- 11:47Speaker 2: another bed.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And then also over the cab. Over the cab.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Over the cab, yeah. My parents used that for storage,
- 11:54Speaker 2: but yes, that's... That would be Eric's spot.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:57Speaker 2: So you're looking at like a 24 to 26 footer.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Yeah, sure. Wow. I've heard so many horror stories, though,
- 12:05Speaker 1: of people buying... RVs for the first time and they
- 12:09Speaker 1: don't know the questions to ask. And then they get
- 12:13Speaker 1: stuck with an RV that's got problems. And the worst
- 12:16Speaker 1: thing that can be possible for an RV is the
- 12:19Speaker 1: fact that you're out at a campground and something fails,
- 12:23Speaker 1: especially the drive train. And then now you're stranded. Like
- 12:27Speaker 1: that's my biggest fear. Like with a trailer, worst case
- 12:30Speaker 1: scenario with a trailer, you just leave it behind and
- 12:33Speaker 1: you drive off and you go into town and do your,
- 12:36Speaker 1: but with an RV, that's pretty much all in one.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Like, so let's be realistic here.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Okay.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You have a 26 foot RV. You're, unless you're going
- 12:46Speaker 2: to a lot of national parks or places that are
- 12:49Speaker 2: complete isolated, you're still going to be within, A relatively
- 12:55Speaker 2: short distance from service. Now, granted, this is the old
- 13:00Speaker 2: adage my dad gave me, is when you go camping
- 13:03Speaker 2: or traveling, you pack half as many clothes and twice
- 13:08Speaker 2: as much money. So that way, because you're going to
- 13:12Speaker 2: run into problems, and if you need the peace, you
- 13:16Speaker 2: need the peace.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Right?
- 13:18Speaker 2: If it's a critical piece to get you home, what
- 13:20Speaker 2: are you going to do? Yeah. You're going to pay.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Just being in a position and knowing what you need
- 13:28Speaker 2: to take with you to be prepared to fix something.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And even if it's a patch. Right. To limp you
- 13:35Speaker 2: home to fix it later.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Has that ever happened to you, Sean? Have you ever
- 13:39Speaker 1: broke down in an RV?
- 13:41Speaker 2: In terms of engine or drivetrain?
- 13:43Speaker 1: No. Yeah. All right.
- 13:44Speaker 2: But I've had water heaters fail. I've had heaters fail.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I've had septic issues. I've had a toilet break. Those
- 13:52Speaker 2: are things that are inevitable. But again, you're in a campground.
- 13:57Speaker 2: It's designed for people to camp. So there's going to
- 14:02Speaker 2: be bathrooms. There's going to be water. There's going to be.
- 14:04Speaker 1: All right. I've got a big question, though. All right. Justin. What?
- 14:09Speaker 1: We look at the price of gas. Diesel is crazy
- 14:13Speaker 1: right now. And I don't know when it's going to
- 14:15Speaker 1: go down. Is there technology? Sean, maybe you know. Now
- 14:20Speaker 1: where we're seeing electric, powered... RVs? You're like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 14:27Speaker 1: All right. Just wondering. No, no.
- 14:32Speaker 2: So you want to talk about electric, right? The good
- 14:36Speaker 2: piece is that you can get roof mounted solar panels
- 14:39Speaker 2: that can charge your 12 volt system.
- 14:41Speaker 1: All right.
- 14:42Speaker 2: So you can charge a battery so you don't have
- 14:43Speaker 2: to run a generator or be connected to shore power
- 14:45Speaker 2: all the time. Boondocking is the term for that. But
- 14:48Speaker 2: in terms of electric trucks and Or cars?
- 14:52Speaker 1: No.
- 14:53Speaker 2: They can't even get Teslas to go 250 miles towing
- 14:56Speaker 2: a trailer.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Even a Cybertruck can't tow something like that. So you
- 15:00Speaker 1: get down the end of the street and you get
- 15:01Speaker 1: a recharge.
- 15:02Speaker 2: That's another thing, too, Justin, you want to think about, too.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Do you want to get a diesel? Or do you
- 15:07Speaker 2: want to get a gas? My parents have had two RVs.
- 15:13Speaker 2: They've both been on the Chevy frames. So I know
- 15:15Speaker 2: you said you don't like Chevy. But my parents have
- 15:17Speaker 2: had no major engine or transmission issues. They've either been
- 15:22Speaker 2: suspension issues, tire issues, or water tank issues. They were
- 15:27Speaker 2: the big ones for my parents. And they drove theirs
- 15:30Speaker 2: to and from Alaska three separate times. They've been to
- 15:33Speaker 2: every Canadian province. They've been to all lower contiguous 48 states,
- 15:38Speaker 2: plus Alaska.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Now, let me ask you this, though. When it comes
- 15:42Speaker 1: to those issues that we're talking about, some of those
- 15:46Speaker 1: are preventable, and especially when it comes to, what do
- 15:49Speaker 1: they call that... Winterization. How hard is it to go
- 15:55Speaker 1: through that process when you are ready to store your
- 15:59Speaker 1: vehicle for the winter? How hard is it to winterize
- 16:01Speaker 1: an RV or a trailer or whatever?
- 16:03Speaker 2: It takes like 30 seconds.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Really? Seriously?
- 16:07Speaker 2: So you drain your septic, you drain your gray water,
- 16:11Speaker 2: and then you flush it with antifreeze.
- 16:13Speaker 1: You're literally pumping that liquid into the pipes and letting
- 16:16Speaker 1: it sit over the winter? Yep.
- 16:17Speaker 2: You flow it through until it drains out every... faucet
- 16:21Speaker 2: and you let it fill the P traps and all
- 16:23Speaker 2: that stuff. And then you just let it sit.
- 16:25Speaker 1: But why, why do you need to do that? If
- 16:27Speaker 1: you drained it from the water, why do you need
- 16:29Speaker 1: to put antifreeze into it? Yeah.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Cause water finds the lowest point.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Ah, yeah, it's true. Right.
- 16:35Speaker 2: So if you have a P trap that may have
- 16:38Speaker 2: gotten some antifreeze through it, but is this.
- 16:40Speaker 1: A problem though? When you go to, put fresh water
- 16:44Speaker 1: into it in the springtime?
- 16:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you fill it, you drain it. You fill it,
- 16:48Speaker 2: you drain it. You fill it with bleach water, you
- 16:50Speaker 2: drain it, you fill it. It's like cleaning your Keurig.
- 16:53Speaker 2: You do like a two or three cycle. You fill it,
- 16:55Speaker 2: you drain it, and then you can do it with
- 16:57Speaker 2: a little bit of bleach water, you drain it, and
- 17:00Speaker 2: you fill it with fresh water, and you're good to go.
- 17:02Speaker 2: So it's not that difficult. To be honest, it's convenient.
- 17:06Speaker 2: If you can pay a dealership $ 125 to do it,
- 17:07Speaker 2: they'll knock it out. you're, you've got their backing on it.
- 17:12Speaker 2: If something happens, like you can take them and say, Hey,
- 17:15Speaker 2: you guys screwed this up, whatever.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:17Speaker 2: I've done my own since I mean, that's just, I
- 17:21Speaker 2: was taught how to do it. I did it my own.
- 17:23Speaker 2: We always had campers growing up. It's very easy to
- 17:26Speaker 2: winterize a camper.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I got a question. What is the coolest piece of
- 17:30Speaker 1: tech that you don't have yet, Sean, that you would
- 17:32Speaker 1: want that maybe Justin, if he's in the market for
- 17:35Speaker 1: an RV that he'd want to have?
- 17:38Speaker 2: Starlink.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Yep. Starlink.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:40Speaker 1: But I told my wife that. I said, look, I
- 17:42Speaker 1: want to get Starlink. She goes, that just defeats the
- 17:45Speaker 1: purpose of camping. No, it doesn't defeat the purpose. Everybody's like, oh,
- 17:48Speaker 1: you can't have technology in the wilderness.
- 17:52Speaker 2: It's convenience, right? It's a little bit of self-security. It's
- 17:55Speaker 2: a little bit of self-preservation. You're going to go on
- 18:00Speaker 2: camping trips and you're going to have the crappiest weather
- 18:02Speaker 2: of your entire lifetime and you're going to be stuck
- 18:05Speaker 2: somewhere for three days. What do you do to entertain
- 18:07Speaker 2: yourself during that time? What is Eric going to do
- 18:11Speaker 2: to entertain himself? We don't have very good internet when
- 18:15Speaker 2: we go camping, but I've built my own little Raspberry
- 18:20Speaker 2: Pi media server so that I can just connect my
- 18:22Speaker 2: iPad to it and stream my movies. I also have
- 18:25Speaker 2: movies on my iPad, so if we're traveling and I
- 18:27Speaker 2: don't want to hook it up, I just toss the
- 18:29Speaker 2: iPad to the boys and say, watch a movie. So
- 18:32Speaker 2: creature comforts are just as important. Being comfortable while you're
- 18:34Speaker 2: camping is just as important as relaxing. If you're not comfortable,
- 18:39Speaker 2: you're miserable. And if you're miserable, you're having a bad time.
- 18:42Speaker 2: And nobody wants that, right? Now, I'm not one, and
- 18:45Speaker 2: Andy and I talked about this, what, two weekends ago
- 18:47Speaker 2: when he brought up this little TV-powered thing he had.
- 18:50Speaker 2: He's like, oh, would you take this camping with you? No,
- 18:52Speaker 2: I wouldn't because I don't care about TV while I'm
- 18:55Speaker 2: out there. I'm not going to put a huge flat
- 18:57Speaker 2: screen outside of my camper and watch movies or stream
- 19:01Speaker 2: the football game or whatever. But some people do that,
- 19:03Speaker 2: and that's okay.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Right?
- 19:05Speaker 2: Because that's okay.
- 19:07Speaker 1: To each their own. Yes, teach their own.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Now, don't be a jerk and go out and blast
- 19:13Speaker 2: music or stream the game at full volume and watch
- 19:18Speaker 2: your TV in the middle of the night and it's
- 19:19Speaker 2: super bright and it's bothering everybody. There's places to go
- 19:23Speaker 2: that accept that and then there's places to go where
- 19:26Speaker 2: it's more restrictive and it's darker or it's quieter or
- 19:30Speaker 2: there's restrictions on things. Teach their own. But you're going
- 19:34Speaker 2: to find, as you go camping, you're going to find
- 19:37Speaker 2: what works for you. Do you do a KOA campground?
- 19:43Speaker 2: Do you do just straight up Bureau of Land Management
- 19:46Speaker 2: and you just drive in and find a spot that
- 19:48Speaker 2: works and you build a little fire and you guys
- 19:50Speaker 2: call it good? Or do you find an RV park
- 19:54Speaker 2: and subscribe to Harvest Hosts or another similar subscription service
- 19:59Speaker 2: that you can then find places where you can just
- 20:01Speaker 2: pull in, be a proprietor of a business, or go
- 20:06Speaker 2: be a customer and then park in the parking lot?
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Right.
- 20:10Speaker 2: So that's what my parents do.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:12Speaker 2: And that's what we've done.
- 20:14Speaker 1: That was the one thing I was going to mention
- 20:16Speaker 1: is if we did this, you know, being that my
- 20:18Speaker 1: mom stayed at a KOA campground because that was the
- 20:22Speaker 1: one that was right there at the base of Devil's Tower.
- 20:25Speaker 1: My wife was super impressed. Now, we've been camping in
- 20:28Speaker 1: the past. We've done some dispersed camping where there is
- 20:33Speaker 1: nothing around you. you get real close with nature. If
- 20:39Speaker 1: you know what I mean, when it comes to having
- 20:41Speaker 1: to do the thing, right? So we've done them all.
- 20:44Speaker 1: We've done that. We've also camped at campgrounds. She was
- 20:48Speaker 1: super impressed by the KOA. She's like, Oh my gosh,
- 20:51Speaker 1: the bathrooms are clean. They've got showers. They've got a
- 20:54Speaker 1: gift store. They've got a restaurant. They sell beer. If
- 20:58Speaker 1: you want some beer, you know, they got all of that.
- 21:01Speaker 1: She's like, I want to stay at KOAs. And I'm like,
- 21:04Speaker 1: I don't have a problem with that. But you talk
- 21:06Speaker 1: to people who are hardcore campers, like Sean, and they're
- 21:11Speaker 1: like KOA. Well, Sean, you get a K-O-A.
- 21:16Speaker 2: So those are, it's a hobby for some people, right?
- 21:20Speaker 2: And in every hobby, you've got the people that want
- 21:22Speaker 2: to yuck your yum, right? Yep. You have the people
- 21:25Speaker 2: that say, if you're not doing it this way, you're
- 21:28Speaker 2: doing it wrong and you're terrible. You should just put
- 21:31Speaker 2: your camper away and never go camping again because you're
- 21:33Speaker 2: not doing it my way.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Who gives a rat's patoot? Like, if you're going to
- 21:38Speaker 2: a KOA and you're having a good time and you're
- 21:40Speaker 2: building memories with your kid and you can go to
- 21:43Speaker 2: a KOA, it's within walking distance of a national park or,
- 21:47Speaker 2: you know, whatever. There's KOAs all over the country.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I've stayed at tons of them. Right. Anytime we traveled
- 21:52Speaker 2: West with my family, cause my, my mom had, we
- 21:55Speaker 2: have ties in Colorado to be on a Vista and
- 21:57Speaker 2: a couple other places. We would always stay at KOAs
- 22:00Speaker 2: the whole time because you drive six or seven hours,
- 22:03Speaker 2: you stop at a KOA. You drive six or seven hours,
- 22:05Speaker 2: you stop at a KOA. You have a pool, bathrooms, showers.
- 22:08Speaker 2: They have KOA cabins, or you could pull your rig
- 22:11Speaker 2: in and stop for one night or stay for a
- 22:12Speaker 2: couple of days. They're great. Now they're a little bit
- 22:16Speaker 2: on the pricier side in terms of you could spend
- 22:18Speaker 2: the time to try and find a mom and pop place.
- 22:21Speaker 2: It's got five sites and it's got a more scenic
- 22:23Speaker 2: view or whatever, but it's a little more commercial.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:27Speaker 2: But what's cool about it is you stop at these places.
- 22:30Speaker 2: They have a community center. They have an, you know,
- 22:33Speaker 2: some of them have arcades for kids, pool tables, et cetera, pool.
- 22:38Speaker 2: I made friends with other kids that were doing the
- 22:40Speaker 2: same thing. You know, you go swim in the pool
- 22:43Speaker 2: and you have a good time and you meet some
- 22:44Speaker 2: friends and you, you know, temporary friends are some of
- 22:47Speaker 2: the best friends you'll have in your life. Yeah. So
- 22:51Speaker 2: I think people that tell you KOAs are whatever commercial
- 22:56Speaker 2: or whatever are, are just so stuck in their own
- 22:59Speaker 2: roots or their own ways. They don't want anybody to
- 23:02Speaker 2: enjoy the hobby unless you're doing it their way. All right.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I want to say though, before you do this, Justin,
- 23:07Speaker 1: there is a movie that you need to see. It
- 23:11Speaker 1: is one of my favorite movies directed by... I don't
- 23:16Speaker 1: know who it was directed by, but it stars Albert Brooks,
- 23:19Speaker 1: Julie Haggerty. The movie is called Lost in America. It
- 23:23Speaker 1: is about a guy who works for an ad agency
- 23:26Speaker 1: who loses his job or promotion, so he decides to
- 23:30Speaker 1: sell his home, buy an RV, and travel across the country.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I thought you were going to say National Lampoon's Christmas
- 23:36Speaker 1: Vacation or something. Oh, that's a great... That is a great... Great,
- 23:40Speaker 1: great RV right there that Cousin Eddie had. But no,
- 23:43Speaker 1: Lost in America is really, it's a great movie about
- 23:46Speaker 1: this guy trying to get, he gets as far as
- 23:48Speaker 1: Vegas and she gambles everything away. Not to ruin it
- 23:51Speaker 1: for you, but. Lost in America. Lost in America. I'll
- 23:54Speaker 1: look it up. I probably can get it on Plex.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Real quick, trivia question. All right. What does KOA stand for?
- 24:03Speaker 2: Campgrounds of America.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Do you know why?
- 24:07Speaker 3: Why is it?
- 24:08Speaker 1: K instead of C. Well, COA. They just couldn't copyright
- 24:15Speaker 1: this C, so they went with K. Do you know
- 24:18Speaker 1: where it started and what year? Wow. Man, you got
- 24:22Speaker 1: into this.
- 24:23Speaker 2: No, hold on. I'm going to take a guess.
- 24:26Speaker 1: All right. Why? Hmm. All right. Come on. Hold on.
- 24:32Speaker 2: I'm going to say Lander, Wyoming.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:36Speaker 2: And because they wanted people to enjoy the great outdoors.
- 24:40Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Okay. Not too far away, 1962, Billings, Montana, when the
- 24:45Speaker 1: founders noticed travelers heading to Seattle World's Fair, camping along
- 24:49Speaker 1: roadsides and parking lots. They opened a simple campground with
- 24:53Speaker 1: picnic tables, fire rings, hot showers, and a small store,
- 24:57Speaker 1: and then expanded by selling franchises. Wow. That's amazing. Yeah.
- 25:02Speaker 1: That is good. Now we know something. with our camping
- 25:06Speaker 1: talk for this week's Tech Talk Radio. I like it.
- 25:09Speaker 1: It's a fair side chat. Will you keep us posted
- 25:12Speaker 1: on the search? And Sean, you're going to help him
- 25:14Speaker 1: pick out a few lines. I'm going to be reaching
- 25:15Speaker 1: out to Sean. Absolutely.
- 25:17Speaker 2: This is Campfire Radio, a product of the Tech Talk
- 25:19Speaker 2: Radio network.
- 25:20Speaker 1: There you go. You know what? What we should do,
- 25:23Speaker 1: we need to put fire, like a campfire sound in
- 25:25Speaker 1: the background during this whole segment. There you go. Sitting
- 25:29Speaker 1: around a campfire chatting. We've already got the name for
- 25:31Speaker 1: the show this week. It's Yuck Your Yum. I have
- 25:33Speaker 1: never heard that before. Yuck your yum. All right. We're
- 25:36Speaker 1: going to take a break. We come back with more
- 25:38Speaker 1: of Tech Talk Radio. We do have some tech questions.
- 25:40Speaker 1: I got a couple of products I need to show
- 25:42Speaker 1: you guys. So we'll do that when we come back.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I'm Andy Taylor.
- 25:45Speaker 2: I'm Sean DeWeerd.
- 25:46Speaker 1: And I'm Justin Lemme. Find us on the web at techtalkradio.com.
- 25:49Speaker 1: We'll be right back. And now, back to Tech Talk Radio.
- 25:53Speaker 3: I don't want to buy just the absolute primo system
- 25:55Speaker 3: out today. That usually wastes money. So I'll be doing
- 25:58Speaker 3: some digital photography, maybe some video editing. Don't do any
- 26:01Speaker 3: gaming at all, so I don't have that demand on
- 26:03Speaker 3: the computer. I was wondering what you guys would suggest,
- 26:06Speaker 3: either in brands or just in general speed, and where
- 26:08Speaker 3: do you go to get the maximum bang for the
- 26:10Speaker 3: buck right now?
- 26:11Speaker 1: Sounds like you want a Mac.
- 26:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:15Speaker 1: All right, before we move on to the next subject,
- 26:17Speaker 1: I just had one last question for Sean about camping.
- 26:20Speaker 1: We talked about campers in the last segment.
- 26:22Speaker 2: All right.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Sean, used or new? Ooh, good question.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I would say used because for one, most of the
- 26:32Speaker 2: small issues from a new dealer have been figured out
- 26:35Speaker 2: by then. Not every RV dealer or RV manufacturer does
- 26:42Speaker 2: things incredible, right? You're going to find little things that
- 26:45Speaker 2: are bad or things that may have gotten broken and
- 26:47Speaker 2: during shipping or delivery, a lot of those things get
- 26:50Speaker 2: worked out by the 30 to 40,000 mile mark. My
- 26:54Speaker 2: parents have always bought used mine.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 26:58Speaker 2: One of mine was used. We bought a new one
- 27:00Speaker 2: for RV, but it's different for a tow behind versus a,
- 27:03Speaker 2: versus a class a. Um, but yeah, my, my dad
- 27:07Speaker 2: wonders where the heck you were two months ago because
- 27:11Speaker 2: they just sold their old one when they bought their
- 27:12Speaker 2: new one. But they went from a 24-footer to a
- 27:17Speaker 2: 27-footer with an additional slide-out, so just a little bit bigger.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I just feel like I'm going to find crumbs or
- 27:27Speaker 1: dirt left behind by the previous owner. That's not good.
- 27:30Speaker 2: That's the whole point, dude. I know Misa loves being very,
- 27:35Speaker 2: very clean.
- 27:36Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Do you understand my wife is Japanese?
- 27:40Speaker 1: Very clean.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Good luck camping anywhere, Sandy.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Oh, boy. We're going to have like six pairs of shoes,
- 27:48Speaker 1: you know, to wear throughout the RV.
- 27:50Speaker 2: No, I mean, you're going to be constantly, like, even
- 27:52Speaker 2: when we go camping, we constantly sweep out, right? We're
- 27:55Speaker 2: constantly sweeping. That's just the nature of it.
- 27:58Speaker 1: It's the outdoors. You don't have a Roomba? a Roomba
- 28:03Speaker 1: and an RV.
- 28:04Speaker 2: No.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Oh my God. No, I swear to God. I went
- 28:07Speaker 1: to an, I went to a campsite one time and
- 28:09Speaker 1: there was a person there with a class a, like
- 28:11Speaker 1: one of those bus style ones with like three slide
- 28:15Speaker 1: outs and everything. Like this was their full-time home. Right.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I walked in cause they were like, Hey.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Come in and check it out. Yeah. Come on in.
- 28:22Speaker 1: We went in, there was a Roomba going up and down.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Oh my Lord. Oh, that's crazy.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I mean, some of those are huge.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Oh, they are, yeah.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Fun fact about KOA, and I just confirmed this because
- 28:33Speaker 2: I heard that, I wasn't sure, the CEO of KOA,
- 28:37Speaker 2: Toby O'Rourke, is a Notre Dame grad.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Whoa! Had to get that in there. Yeah, definitely. And
- 28:42Speaker 1: if you don't know, if you're listening to the show
- 28:44Speaker 1: for the first time, Sean works for Notre Dame. We
- 28:47Speaker 1: live at the base of the Rocky Mountains. We've got
- 28:50Speaker 1: so many different dealers around that we could go visit.
- 28:53Speaker 1: But if they're making them in Indiana... You should go
- 28:57Speaker 1: back to Indiana and see them there. Well, for the
- 29:00Speaker 1: first time, I've never been to Indiana, so I've been
- 29:03Speaker 1: to Chicago, but never been to Indiana. But now, real quick,
- 29:06Speaker 1: I did mention in the very beginning, you did say,
- 29:08Speaker 1: or I said, go to the Great American RV Show
- 29:12Speaker 1: and buy one, and you were like, no, no, no. So,
- 29:15Speaker 1: the Great American RV Show is a great show to
- 29:18Speaker 1: go look at stuff, but it's not good to buy. 100%.
- 29:21Speaker 2: You want to go and walk in and put your
- 29:26Speaker 2: feet in and lay on a bed and like look
- 29:29Speaker 2: at the layout because when Caitlin and I bought ours,
- 29:32Speaker 2: we went from a smaller, camper to a bigger camper.
- 29:35Speaker 2: And we were hell-bent on not having a Murphy bed
- 29:39Speaker 2: in the front. One that flips up. Until we went
- 29:42Speaker 2: in and saw how much space you get back when
- 29:44Speaker 2: you flip the bed up and you get a couch.
- 29:47Speaker 2: So we saw a couple models of that. And that
- 29:48Speaker 2: led us to, like, we had never been in one
- 29:50Speaker 2: like that. So, like, getting in and seeing it and
- 29:52Speaker 2: putting your hands on it. and understanding how it's designed
- 29:55Speaker 2: and the intricacies.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Well, that's what the Great American RV Show does, that
- 29:58Speaker 1: you can get in and you can go see that
- 30:00Speaker 1: kind of stuff. Yeah. Yeah, look stuff up. Use the,
- 30:03Speaker 1: just like buying a car. Don't you agree, guys? You're
- 30:07Speaker 1: going to buy a car, you're going to buy a motorcycle,
- 30:09Speaker 1: you're going to buy an RV. Look it up and
- 30:13Speaker 1: see what, you know, what is recommended.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:16Speaker 1: You know, it can't go wrong there.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 1: I got to show you guys something. All right.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Show this product. Is that a prosthetic leg? It looks
- 30:25Speaker 1: like a lightsaber, doesn't it? It does have that look,
- 30:28Speaker 1: doesn't it? I'm showing it on our video. If you
- 30:30Speaker 1: guys want to check out our YouTube, you can subscribe
- 30:33Speaker 1: there and everything, too. This is from Ulanzi. It's called
- 30:37Speaker 1: the TT23. My daughter does a lot of content, social
- 30:42Speaker 1: media content. And she likes to write. And then she
- 30:45Speaker 1: does videos and reads some of her writings. And she
- 30:49Speaker 1: said that her tripod was falling apart. And she needed
- 30:52Speaker 1: one for her phone. So I recommended her the Ulanzi T2,
- 30:56Speaker 1: which connects to a desktop and has a holder for
- 30:59Speaker 1: a smartphone on it. And it's perfect. You can adjust
- 31:01Speaker 1: the height. But then I was doing the research before
- 31:04Speaker 1: I recommended that to her because I have a T2.
- 31:07Speaker 1: And I was looking up this Ulanzi TT23. And I thought, well,
- 31:12Speaker 1: that's kind of cool, right? And if you bang the
- 31:15Speaker 1: bottom of it, it will open up. I'm probably going
- 31:17Speaker 1: to hit the face by doing this. And it turns
- 31:21Speaker 1: into a Tripod. Now this tripod extends up to 64 inches.
- 31:26Speaker 1: So if you're looking for, if you're content creation, you're
- 31:29Speaker 1: looking for a way to, you know, hold your smartphone
- 31:32Speaker 1: and kind of showing that it could twist. You can
- 31:34Speaker 1: do vertical, horizontal, but what's really cool is right here.
- 31:39Speaker 1: There is a, uh, it's a sensor. And what you
- 31:44Speaker 1: can do now is remember the Belkin that I had, the, the,
- 31:47Speaker 1: that would follow you, but you only, the only thing
- 31:50Speaker 1: it would work with was an iPhone. This will work
- 31:54Speaker 1: with Android, and you put your phone in here, and
- 31:58Speaker 1: when you turn it on, which is very easy to
- 32:00Speaker 1: do with this device, but you turn it on, with
- 32:04Speaker 1: the sensor, it will follow you. So if you're a
- 32:08Speaker 1: content creator, or you want to create videos where you're
- 32:10Speaker 1: maybe walking around a room, talking, cooking demos, sewing demos,
- 32:15Speaker 1: any kind of demo, and you want to have the
- 32:17Speaker 1: camera being able to move, this will move with you,
- 32:20Speaker 1: and it's You could put up a hand to stop
- 32:23Speaker 1: it or an L to start it. And I mean,
- 32:26Speaker 1: it's really good. You could use it like a selfie
- 32:28Speaker 1: stick or you could put it in the tripod mode
- 32:30Speaker 1: like I showed you. This looks amazing. The Belkin was
- 32:34Speaker 1: like $ 139. This was about $ 39. Really? Yeah. So if
- 32:40Speaker 1: you're looking for a tripod, I want to recommend Ulanzi.
- 32:44Speaker 1: So I got that to show on television. And I
- 32:47Speaker 1: also got this. The DJI Mic Mini 2.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Hey!
- 32:53Speaker 1: And this is pretty cool. Little, you know, receivers. Or
- 32:59Speaker 1: one receiver, two transmitter. This is a transmitter. This is
- 33:06Speaker 1: the receiver. Can plug right into your smartphone. USB-C. You
- 33:10Speaker 1: can plug it into a standard phone or camera if
- 33:14Speaker 1: you wanted to do that too. And... It's basically a
- 33:18Speaker 1: wireless microphone. How much are those? This was only $ 79. Yeah,
- 33:22Speaker 1: they're not that expensive.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Well, Andy, I think like four or five months ago,
- 33:27Speaker 2: I had bought the Mic Mini and I did the
- 33:30Speaker 2: show on it.
- 33:31Speaker 1: That's right. And it sounded good. It sounded great.
- 33:36Speaker 2: What I like about them is they have the magnetic mount. Yeah.
- 33:39Speaker 2: It has a little magnet on the back. So you just,
- 33:41Speaker 2: you just put the magnet in your shirt and you
- 33:43Speaker 2: clip it to the front. So there's no pin. There's no,
- 33:45Speaker 2: you know, no pin or lapel or anything. You can
- 33:47Speaker 2: kind of mount it anywhere. A lot of people put
- 33:49Speaker 2: them on the brims of hats.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Or they're out of the way or they put them on,
- 33:54Speaker 2: you know.
- 33:55Speaker 1: And it has a, it has a windscreen, you know,
- 33:57Speaker 1: that you could plug into the top of it.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Which is magnetic.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Which is magnetic. And the thing is, they actually came
- 34:03Speaker 1: up with one, my hair color, which I thought was
- 34:06Speaker 1: kind of cool. But, um, You know, for $ 79, if
- 34:09Speaker 1: you're looking for a wireless solution for this, and wouldn't
- 34:14Speaker 1: you know, I bought this, and the next day I
- 34:17Speaker 1: got a gig shooting an event for the town of
- 34:20Speaker 1: Oro Valley where I'm going to need this. So I
- 34:23Speaker 1: could put it on somebody and get the sounds of
- 34:26Speaker 1: around the area. That's cool.
- 34:30Speaker 2: So the receiver just plugs in. It's either USB-C or lightning,
- 34:33Speaker 2: so you can do either. And then it's got a
- 34:35Speaker 2: decent range on it, right? So if you're not in
- 34:37Speaker 2: a hostile RF environment, I used it when we were
- 34:40Speaker 2: camping this summer to record like Caitlin's family singing campfire songs.
- 34:44Speaker 2: So I just put it on a little tripod.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:48Speaker 2: It clicked on magnetically to the side of the tripod
- 34:51Speaker 2: and I just left it and it got really good sound.
- 34:55Speaker 2: I mean, they're good quality for the size and the cost.
- 34:59Speaker 2: They're conspicuous.
- 35:00Speaker 1: So it's... What is it called again? The DJI what?
- 35:03Speaker 1: It's the DJI Mic Mini 2 and it comes with
- 35:06Speaker 1: the charging case. So... You know, you can put it
- 35:09Speaker 1: in here. The case is fully charged. It will charge
- 35:13Speaker 1: the receiver and the two transmitters that's in there, too.
- 35:17Speaker 1: So you're not stuck with just having one. Now, I've
- 35:21Speaker 1: tried Rode before, and the Rode ones are really good.
- 35:24Speaker 1: They're a lot more expensive than that. There is a
- 35:27Speaker 1: DJI Mic 3. That's not the Mini 3, but that
- 35:31Speaker 1: one actually allows you to record directly onto it.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Correct.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Oh, wow. That one's 260 right now. Yeah. And that allows,
- 35:38Speaker 1: you know, to record 32 gigabytes of storage right onto
- 35:42Speaker 1: the device.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Well, what I like about it too is like, you
- 35:44Speaker 2: don't have to have a smartphone, right? It's got a
- 35:46Speaker 2: tip ring ring sleeve.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 35:48Speaker 2: So you can come out 3.5 millimeter into a, you know,
- 35:52Speaker 2: a DSLR or another type of camera because it's got power.
- 35:56Speaker 2: So you don't need to provide it power, phantom power
- 35:58Speaker 2: or anything like that. So that's kind of a benefit there. Um, again,
- 36:02Speaker 2: they're relatively inexpensive. You're seeing them. They're very popular for,
- 36:05Speaker 2: for content creators. Um, And they're easy to use. The
- 36:09Speaker 2: only downside is.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Not that expensive.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Right, they're not that expensive. The only downside is you
- 36:13Speaker 2: forget to charge them. You're kind of out of the list.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Yeah, because it takes a little bit to charge. The
- 36:17Speaker 1: case charges it, right? When you pop it back in
- 36:19Speaker 1: the case.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Right, but like anything else, you forget, and then you
- 36:22Speaker 2: take it out six months later when you need it,
- 36:24Speaker 2: and it's not charged, the whole thing. Everybody knows that story, right?
- 36:26Speaker 1: Yeah, of course. We got a question, and I was
- 36:31Speaker 1: hoping that maybe, Sean, you could take this one from Brian.
- 36:36Speaker 1: And this one came actually came in a couple of
- 36:37Speaker 1: weeks ago and we were both out last week. So
- 36:40Speaker 1: I thought maybe you'd still want to go ahead and
- 36:42Speaker 1: handle this one, Sean.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Oh, yes. I read this one pre-show and I told
- 36:46Speaker 2: you I wanted to answer it because I think I
- 36:47Speaker 2: have the best answer. May not be the most convenient,
- 36:50Speaker 2: but I think it's the best. So Brian wrote to
- 36:53Speaker 2: us from Tucson. Hey guys, love the show and have
- 36:55Speaker 2: been recently wanting to save videos I've seen on YouTube
- 36:57Speaker 2: and Instagram, but I don't see a way to download them.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I've tried using my phone to record the screen, but
- 37:03Speaker 2: the quality isn't great. Can you recommend a solution?
- 37:06Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 37:07Speaker 2: So, in the world of news, and Justin, you understand this,
- 37:13Speaker 2: a producer will say, hey, you need to grab that
- 37:16Speaker 2: video off of YouTube or Facebook and we want to
- 37:19Speaker 2: air it. Okay, well, you screen record it. Well, you
- 37:22Speaker 2: lose a ton of quality that way.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Well, then you try and find the original source and
- 37:25Speaker 2: you got to track down the person. You got to
- 37:27Speaker 2: get the rights and all this stuff. So, if you're
- 37:29Speaker 2: just looking to preserve media for your own consumption, there's
- 37:35Speaker 2: a great command line process called YouTube Downloader. YT-DLP. You
- 37:44Speaker 2: can get it. You can Google it. You can figure
- 37:46Speaker 2: it out. It's very easy to install.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Is it safe? It is.
- 37:52Speaker 2: I mean, it's as safe as they get. I think
- 37:55Speaker 2: it's safer than buying a license to YouTube Downloader 4K
- 38:01Speaker 2: that you have to click on six suspicious links to
- 38:03Speaker 2: download and then and then you download two videos, and
- 38:06Speaker 2: they're like, oh, by the way, you only get the
- 38:08Speaker 2: first minute and a half because you can pay $ 8. 99
- 38:11Speaker 2: a month to get the full version. Oh, and if
- 38:14Speaker 2: you want to just get the MP3s, that's another $ 8.
- 38:16Speaker 1: 99.
- 38:16Speaker 2: You know, there's a whole bunch of... It's a SaaS
- 38:18Speaker 2: at that point, right? It's a software as a service
- 38:20Speaker 2: at that point.
- 38:20Speaker 1: But you say it's command line, so it's not like...
- 38:23Speaker 1: So you actually have to enter in the command.
- 38:26Speaker 2: So, yeah. So there are a few very easy-to-follow guides online.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Once it's installed, it's just running... a command like you
- 38:35Speaker 2: type in YT dash DLP, and then you put it
- 38:40Speaker 2: in quotes, the YouTube link at end quote, and it
- 38:43Speaker 2: downloads it to your seat, wherever you decide to go.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Really?
- 38:47Speaker 2: So the, the benefit to that too is there's another,
- 38:51Speaker 2: another software that you can get called FFM peg, which
- 38:55Speaker 2: is a open, these are both open source, right? So
- 38:57Speaker 2: they're developed by the community. They're maintained by the community.
- 39:00Speaker 2: They're supported by the community. Um, and, I've had no
- 39:05Speaker 2: issues with it over the last probably two years I've
- 39:06Speaker 2: been using it. But FFmpeg allows you to do more
- 39:10Speaker 2: advanced features such as I want to download it, but
- 39:14Speaker 2: I also want to convert it from a WebM to
- 39:17Speaker 2: an MP4, or I want to convert it from a
- 39:19Speaker 2: WebM and retranscode it as HEVC, or I want to
- 39:24Speaker 2: download just the MP3, or I want to download it
- 39:26Speaker 2: as a wave or a flat.
- 39:28Speaker 1: But that YouTube downloader command line that you mentioned, does
- 39:31Speaker 1: that download it in an MP4 format?
- 39:34Speaker 2: It downloads it whatever you can tell it. Hey, I
- 39:36Speaker 2: want you to download this as the highest resolution. I
- 39:39Speaker 2: want you to download it as the most compressed format.
- 39:43Speaker 2: I want you to download it as the original. You
- 39:46Speaker 2: set the parameters, and it will then get what you
- 39:48Speaker 2: tell it to.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Where do our listeners go to get this?
- 39:51Speaker 2: If you want free and easy, relatively easy, YouTube Downloader, YouTube-DLP.
- 39:56Speaker 1: We've got to take a quick break. Now, coming back,
- 39:58Speaker 1: we've got a special guest on the show. Tom Camber
- 40:02Speaker 1: is Executive Director of Older Adults Technology Services, otherwise known
- 40:06Speaker 1: as OATS, from AARP. You know, a lot of adults,
- 40:11Speaker 1: senior adults that, you know, maybe have been using computers
- 40:14Speaker 1: a lot longer than all of us are starting to
- 40:17Speaker 1: venture into this world of technology a little more. And
- 40:20Speaker 1: they're finding out that maybe there's some scary parts that
- 40:24Speaker 1: they need to know about. So we're going to talk
- 40:26Speaker 1: with Tom about some of those tips, some of the
- 40:28Speaker 1: things to think about. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 40:30Speaker 2: I'm Sean DeWeerd.
- 40:31Speaker 1: And I'm Justin Lemme. Send us a message on X
- 40:34Speaker 1: at Tech Talk Radio. We'll be right back.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Now, back to Tech Talk Radio.
- 40:39Speaker 1: We are constantly told about AI and, you know, the
- 40:44Speaker 1: benefits of AI. And there's so many great things around it.
- 40:47Speaker 1: But I've had a lot of people here in Green
- 40:48Speaker 1: Valley ask me about the safety when it comes to that.
- 40:52Speaker 1: And one of the companies that's really spearheading the idea
- 40:55Speaker 1: of safety and seniors using technology is, of course, Oats.
- 41:00Speaker 1: That's the older adults technology services from AARP. And Tom Camber,
- 41:06Speaker 1: is Executive Director of Oats and is with us on
- 41:09Speaker 1: the line. Tom, good to see you, sir. Good to
- 41:12Speaker 1: be here. Thanks for having me. There is a lot
- 41:14Speaker 1: of concern when it comes to AI. I mean, AI
- 41:17Speaker 1: has some great benefits. It really does. But we're hearing
- 41:20Speaker 1: right now about some of the problems that exist with
- 41:24Speaker 1: AI and, you know, things that we need to know. And,
- 41:28Speaker 1: you know, are seniors jumping into using this technology or
- 41:33Speaker 1: are they really holding back?
- 41:35Speaker 4: Well, what we're finding is that increasingly the majority of
- 41:38Speaker 4: older adults are now using AI chatbots. They're actively engaged
- 41:42Speaker 4: using this technology. Many of them find it to be indispensable.
- 41:46Speaker 4: They're using it for research. They're using it for learning things,
- 41:51Speaker 4: for planning trips and things like that. But we're seeing
- 41:54Speaker 4: a sea change in the comfort level because the AI
- 41:58Speaker 4: tools are really a different order of set of challenges
- 42:02Speaker 4: for people. When it used to be that we would
- 42:04Speaker 4: survey people and they would say about half of them
- 42:06Speaker 4: might have some questions or comfort level issues. We did
- 42:10Speaker 4: a survey recently of 600 older adults using technology. Only
- 42:13Speaker 4: 7% said they felt confident using AI and knowing what
- 42:17Speaker 4: to share with those tools.
- 42:20Speaker 3: Wow.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Only 7%. And we think about the importance of online
- 42:25Speaker 1: safety when it comes to using any kind of technology,
- 42:29Speaker 1: whether it's just getting on your browser and doing a search,
- 42:32Speaker 1: answering an email. AI kind of, does it present a
- 42:35Speaker 1: different situation? It does.
- 42:37Speaker 4: It's actually created a set of different challenges for people,
- 42:40Speaker 4: which I think is why people are expressing so much concern.
- 42:43Speaker 4: First of all, those AI interactions that we're having feel
- 42:48Speaker 4: very human. So when we're connecting to a chatbot, we're
- 42:50Speaker 4: not typing into a screen or wrestling with a bunch
- 42:53Speaker 4: of menus. We're just talking naturally, and it responds to
- 42:57Speaker 4: us almost as a friend might. And so we lower
- 43:02Speaker 4: our sense of concern. We lower some of our self-protection
- 43:07Speaker 4: in there. And many people will share things with their
- 43:09Speaker 4: AI chatbots that they wouldn't normally be expecting to put
- 43:13Speaker 4: on the internet. The problem is the chatbots are not people.
- 43:16Speaker 4: They're part of a company providing you with a service.
- 43:19Speaker 4: Those companies are not regulated by the government to protect
- 43:22Speaker 4: your medical information. They don't all have the same practices
- 43:26Speaker 4: and rules about protecting your privacy. And so when you
- 43:29Speaker 4: share something onto an AI chatbot, you should assume it
- 43:33Speaker 4: could become public. And people don't realize that or have
- 43:36Speaker 4: kind of gotten lulled into a false sense of security
- 43:39Speaker 4: and are forgetting it. So we're really encouraging people to
- 43:42Speaker 4: take a moment, put on the brakes, and just think
- 43:45Speaker 4: about what you're sharing with your AI chatbot and learn
- 43:48Speaker 4: some new tools and skills to protect yourself a little
- 43:50Speaker 4: better these days.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Well, let's face it, Tom, there are medical professionals and,
- 43:55Speaker 1: you know, organizations that will ask for some of this
- 43:59Speaker 1: information during, you know, a registration or, you know, giving
- 44:04Speaker 1: that information to an insurance company. Again, they have to
- 44:07Speaker 1: take a step back because they may get an email
- 44:10Speaker 1: that says this is, you know, you need to fill
- 44:12Speaker 1: out this form. Come on here. They click through. They
- 44:15Speaker 1: think they're interacting with their hospital or their their practice.
- 44:19Speaker 1: And that's not the case. Right.
- 44:21Speaker 4: That's absolutely correct. So in many cases, these systems mimic
- 44:27Speaker 4: our medical information systems. And so if you are communicating
- 44:31Speaker 4: with your doctor, you're normally going to be using what
- 44:33Speaker 4: they call a patient portal, which is a specific set
- 44:36Speaker 4: of technology tools that are relatively well protected from a
- 44:41Speaker 4: privacy standpoint. They're regulated through a federal law called HIPAA,
- 44:44Speaker 4: and your doctor is required to protect your personal information
- 44:47Speaker 4: while using them. But if you get a random email
- 44:49Speaker 4: from you know, maybe an insurer or another medical sounding
- 44:54Speaker 4: institution that you're interacting with, they're not protected by HIPAA.
- 44:57Speaker 4: They're not necessarily going to protect your privacy in the
- 44:59Speaker 4: same way.
- 45:00Speaker 1: So people really need to.
- 45:01Speaker 4: Be careful when you are sharing information to only do
- 45:05Speaker 4: it if it's medical information and within a HIPAA regulated environment.
- 45:09Speaker 4: Usually that's going to be through a personal health record
- 45:11Speaker 4: that your doctor's office is enrolling you in. And then
- 45:14Speaker 4: you also are using that to supplement your interaction with
- 45:17Speaker 4: your doctor. So you're working with a provider who's an
- 45:19Speaker 4: expert and has been licensed to do this, the use
- 45:22Speaker 4: of the AI tools can be helpful, but only as
- 45:25Speaker 4: a supplement to that, to maybe prepare you for a
- 45:27Speaker 4: doctor's visit or to research some conditions or things that
- 45:30Speaker 4: you're interested in without putting your personal information on there.
- 45:33Speaker 1: What are some steps, Tom, that people can do right
- 45:37Speaker 1: now to protect their information?
- 45:39Speaker 4: Well, we've set up a website. I'll give you a
- 45:42Speaker 4: quick plug here for where we're putting the information. We
- 45:45Speaker 4: have a special website that we've assembled. It's at seniorplanet.org
- 45:52Speaker 4: slash privacy. And seniorplanet.org slash privacy, it's run by my
- 45:56Speaker 4: nonprofit organization. We don't charge for using it. It's non-commercial,
- 46:00Speaker 4: meant to just be a socially beneficial tool here. We've
- 46:03Speaker 4: put together a bunch of resources. One of them is
- 46:05Speaker 4: a do's and don'ts checklist. for things that people should
- 46:08Speaker 4: be aware of. Some of it's things I'm talking about
- 46:11Speaker 4: here around your personal information. Some of it's getting a
- 46:14Speaker 4: little more thoughtful about passwords and protecting your devices. Secondly,
- 46:19Speaker 4: we have a quiz that allows people to assess their
- 46:21Speaker 4: own personal profile around privacy. Privacy isn't the same for everybody.
- 46:25Speaker 4: Some people want to be more private and don't want
- 46:28Speaker 4: much information. Other people are more comfortable having some stuff
- 46:31Speaker 4: out there. So it allows you to assess your own
- 46:34Speaker 4: profile and then set your settings accordingly. And then finally,
- 46:37Speaker 4: we really zero in on AI. So we have some
- 46:39Speaker 4: tools around what kinds of information to share with AI.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Do you recommend for senior users that are in this
- 46:47Speaker 1: to take, well, number one, they definitely want to visit
- 46:49Speaker 1: this site. But do you recommend they take classes? Where
- 46:53Speaker 1: can somebody learn more about the safety of being online?
- 47:00Speaker 4: Well, you've really asked the right guy here because my nonprofit,
- 47:03Speaker 4: Senior Planet, does classes every single day on technology for
- 47:08Speaker 4: older adults. Again, we've been doing this for 20 years.
- 47:09Speaker 4: We've got sites around the country, and we're an affiliate
- 47:12Speaker 4: of AARP. So our job here, our goal, our mission
- 47:15Speaker 4: is to help older people live and thrive in this
- 47:18Speaker 4: modern world using these technology tools. So if people go
- 47:21Speaker 4: to seniorplanet.org, they'll see there's classes that are Zoom-based for
- 47:25Speaker 4: the most part. You can log on to a Zoom
- 47:27Speaker 4: class and be together with sometimes hundreds of other older
- 47:31Speaker 4: adults are taking the class with you. You can ask
- 47:34Speaker 4: questions through the chats and things like that. It's really
- 47:36Speaker 4: a great way for people to learn about tech. And
- 47:38Speaker 4: it's not just learning about the tech itself, but sometimes
- 47:41Speaker 4: we have classes on virtual travel where they get to
- 47:43Speaker 4: have a travel guide to another country, bringing people through
- 47:47Speaker 4: something that they haven't seen before or people doing book
- 47:50Speaker 4: clubs and things like that online. So it's kind of
- 47:52Speaker 4: a community of older users that are learning about technology.
- 47:54Speaker 1: SeniorPlanet.org is a great place to start. Do you cover,
- 47:57Speaker 1: and this has been a subject that's come up quite
- 48:00Speaker 1: a bit, Tom, especially talking with Oates and AARP, genealogy.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Genealogy is huge. Is that also something that seniors should
- 48:09Speaker 1: be concerned with before putting that information for living relatives online?
- 48:15Speaker 1: I think so.
- 48:16Speaker 4: People need to be, whenever, there's a host of different
- 48:19Speaker 4: genealogy apps and tools out there. Some of them are
- 48:22Speaker 4: better than others. And again, it's a changing landscape every year,
- 48:26Speaker 4: so I don't want to get into the specifics of
- 48:27Speaker 4: which one today. But if I was going to be
- 48:30Speaker 4: using a genealogy tool, and we certainly hear people calling
- 48:32Speaker 4: about it and contacting us pretty regularly, I would certainly
- 48:35Speaker 4: research which tool that is, look up the reviews and
- 48:38Speaker 4: the ratings of that tool online, and then actually go
- 48:43Speaker 4: and take a peek at what their privacy policy is.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Virtually all of these apps have a privacy policy. You
- 48:50Speaker 1: can read it.
- 48:51Speaker 4: I know it sounds a little wonky, but it's actually
- 48:53Speaker 4: pretty clear once you look at them, which ones are
- 48:55Speaker 4: taking your privacy more seriously than others. And again, do
- 48:59Speaker 4: assume that anything you share could become public. So just
- 49:02Speaker 4: be a little cautious about things where there may be
- 49:05Speaker 4: something sensitive. If I had a sensitive family situation that
- 49:08Speaker 4: I didn't want to be disclosing or connecting in some way,
- 49:11Speaker 4: I probably wouldn't use a public genealogy tool for it.
- 49:14Speaker 1: There you go. Um, what seems to be the question
- 49:16Speaker 1: that you get the most, uh, Tom? And I know you,
- 49:20Speaker 1: you feel a lot of questions from a lot of users.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Oats is, uh, I've been doing this radio show for
- 49:25Speaker 1: almost 30, 30 years. And, you know, I've, I've heard
- 49:29Speaker 1: of senior planet. I've heard, you know, and so what is,
- 49:31Speaker 1: what is the question that you seem to get the most?
- 49:34Speaker 4: The question that we get the most from older adult
- 49:36Speaker 4: users is, um, what is the benefit of this technology?
- 49:40Speaker 1: Why should I be using it? That's the big issue
- 49:42Speaker 1: for folks there.
- 49:43Speaker 4: We find that older people particularly are less about the
- 49:46Speaker 4: sort of social using of the technology. So often younger
- 49:50Speaker 4: people will say, well, all of my friends are using
- 49:52Speaker 4: that app or that tool, so I should get on
- 49:53Speaker 4: and participate as well. But for older adults, they're looking
- 49:57Speaker 4: to figure out if I adopt this tool or I
- 50:00Speaker 4: take the risk or the work that's required to start
- 50:02Speaker 4: this new journey on a piece of technology, What am
- 50:05Speaker 4: I going to get out of it? Is it going
- 50:06Speaker 4: to help me with some knowledge that I don't have?
- 50:08Speaker 4: Am I going to use it to write documents that
- 50:09Speaker 4: I need to write? Is it going to save me time,
- 50:11Speaker 4: save me money, make me more secure? And so we
- 50:14Speaker 4: are often finding ourselves helping people tease out, we call
- 50:17Speaker 4: it the value proposition. And that's the most important part
- 50:20Speaker 4: for most folks when they're using technology. If you know
- 50:23Speaker 4: why you want it, you'll know the value that it's
- 50:25Speaker 4: bringing to you and how much time and energy you
- 50:27Speaker 4: want to invest in learning all these different skills.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Absolutely. All right. Where can our listeners go once again
- 50:33Speaker 1: To get information, to find out more about OATS, which
- 50:36Speaker 1: is a great program, Senior Planet, what's the best links?
- 50:40Speaker 4: SeniorPlanet.org is the general link for the site. It's got
- 50:43Speaker 4: our hotline number.
- 50:43Speaker 1: There as well.
- 50:44Speaker 4: You can see it right at the top of the
- 50:45Speaker 4: site when you go visit. There's also SeniorPlanet.org slash privacy,
- 50:50Speaker 4: specifically focusing on these AI tools that are happening. And
- 50:53Speaker 4: also for folks that may not be familiar with the
- 50:56Speaker 4: ARP website, ARP.org has astonishingly good resources.
- 51:00Speaker 1: They have a fraud hotline.
- 51:02Speaker 4: They've got very large quantities of articles that help illuminate
- 51:05Speaker 4: these things. And it's not just for ARP members. The
- 51:09Speaker 4: general public can go on the website and get some
- 51:10Speaker 4: great information as well. So we encourage people to look
- 51:12Speaker 4: at both sites.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Great information. Tom Canberra, thank you so much for coming on.
- 51:17Speaker 1: And we'll just keep getting that information out there and
- 51:20Speaker 1: helping to keep everybody safe when they're online, at least
- 51:23Speaker 1: making the steps, right? Thank you. We're all in this together,
- 51:25Speaker 1: so as we learn it together, we'll keep each other safe.
- 51:28Speaker 1: Once again, that website address is seniorplanet.org for more info.
- 51:33Speaker 1: And don't forget to follow us on Tech Talk Radio.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Make sure you give us a like, subscribe right there,
- 51:38Speaker 1: and be updated whenever we post content from this show and,
- 51:41Speaker 1: of course, our KMSB Fox 11 segments all right there.
- 51:45Speaker 1: You'll find it on our website, techtalkradio.com. We'll be back
- 51:49Speaker 1: with the guys with more of Tech Talk Radio coming
- 51:51Speaker 1: up next. And now, back to Tech Talk Radio. Hey everybody,
- 51:55Speaker 1: I'm John St. John, the voice of Duke Nukem, and
- 51:58Speaker 1: you're listening to Tech Talk Radio. I know I do.
- 52:01Speaker 2: So Andy, I did it.
- 52:03Speaker 1: Oh, what'd you do?
- 52:06Speaker 2: I pre-ordered it.
- 52:07Speaker 1: You pre-ordered something like GTA 6?
- 52:09Speaker 2: I told you if they announced it, I was going
- 52:12Speaker 2: to buy it. Because when they announced the Ocarina of
- 52:16Speaker 2: Time remake, I told you they were going to announce
- 52:20Speaker 2: a special edition Switch for it. Because I didn't have
- 52:24Speaker 2: a Switch 2. And it's only available on the Switch 2.
- 52:28Speaker 1: So you ordered a Switch 2.
- 52:31Speaker 2: They finally announced it. This has been about a month now.
- 52:35Speaker 2: And it's been one of those, you know, the scalpers
- 52:37Speaker 2: and the bots and everything. So after trying to find
- 52:41Speaker 2: a way to get it, I downloaded an app that
- 52:43Speaker 2: tracked it all and sent me emails and tried to
- 52:45Speaker 2: get me on lists and all stuff. Yesterday, I finally
- 52:48Speaker 2: got one. I finally got a pre-order.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Oh.
- 52:51Speaker 2: For the Nintendo Switch 2 Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition.
- 52:55Speaker 1: Oh, nice.
- 52:56Speaker 2: Which looks awesome. If you're a Nintendo fan, Zelda fan,
- 53:00Speaker 2: look for it on their website. It's incredible. I pre-ordered
- 53:04Speaker 2: the game through Best Buy because the game itself was
- 53:07Speaker 2: relatively easy to find. I pre-ordered the actual 40th Anniversary
- 53:14Speaker 2: Pro Controller also from Best Buy, which have been a
- 53:17Speaker 2: hot ticket item as well. But I went through... a
- 53:20Speaker 2: month of daily alerts, trying to log in, trying to
- 53:24Speaker 2: beat the scalpers, trying to get, and I finally got it.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Cause I, there's no way I was going to pay
- 53:30Speaker 2: someone at eBay above MSRP for this thing.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:34Speaker 2: I finally got it. So I'm, I'm very excited to
- 53:36Speaker 2: get it. When I get it, I will show it
- 53:39Speaker 2: to you guys. I will stream the game when it
- 53:41Speaker 2: comes out. Cause it's my childhood all over again. My
- 53:45Speaker 2: brother is getting one. I got one. I've got other
- 53:47Speaker 2: friends that have been looking for them. Some of them
- 53:50Speaker 2: are even trying to sell their original Switches so they
- 53:52Speaker 2: can get the new one. Yeah, so I was able
- 53:55Speaker 2: to get it through Nintendo.
- 53:57Speaker 1: I don't have a Switch. How's the quality look on
- 54:00Speaker 1: the Switch when you're looking at it? I mean, how
- 54:03Speaker 1: does it stand up?
- 54:04Speaker 2: The Switch, the original Switch is 1080p 60.
- 54:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 54:08Speaker 2: I think the OLED one went up to 120 refresh.
- 54:13Speaker 2: The new one, I've only played the Switch 2 once.
- 54:16Speaker 2: I've not had one. And I, so I'm excited to
- 54:20Speaker 2: see what it looks like. It'll, I believe it does 4k.
- 54:24Speaker 1: So you've got one, right? We do. We have one.
- 54:27Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't, I don't know if it
- 54:28Speaker 1: does 4k cause I've never actually hooked it up to
- 54:30Speaker 1: the TV, but.
- 54:32Speaker 2: I'm excited to get it because it's a game that
- 54:34Speaker 2: I enjoyed playing when I was a young adult. And
- 54:38Speaker 2: I'm excited because my boys like playing the Mario games.
- 54:41Speaker 2: They like playing the original Zelda games. So I'm excited to,
- 54:45Speaker 2: have a little childhood nostalgia and some whimsy, right. And
- 54:49Speaker 2: then show my kids Ocarina of Time. And from what
- 54:52Speaker 2: I've seen online and I'm, I'm trying to avoid as
- 54:55Speaker 2: much as possible so I can go back into it
- 54:57Speaker 2: as blind as possible because there is rumor that they've
- 55:01Speaker 2: added some certain, they've added small amounts of things, some
- 55:04Speaker 2: quality of life adjustments, that kind of stuff. So I'm
- 55:07Speaker 2: trying to really enjoy it without spoiling myself too much.
- 55:11Speaker 1: All right. Well, this sounds great. You're going to have
- 55:13Speaker 1: to give us an update next week on the show.
- 55:15Speaker 1: In the meantime, glad you're back, Justin. Be sure to
- 55:18Speaker 1: hit up our website, techtalkradio.com. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 55:21Speaker 2: I'm Sean DeWeerd.
- 55:22Speaker 1: And I'm Justin Lummey. Once again, find us on the
- 55:24Speaker 1: web at techtalkradio.com. Have yourselves a great week.
- 55:28Speaker 2: See ya.
