- 0:00Back on the Yukon of Women's Basketball Coaches Show. This is show number two
- 0:03of three tonight, Dan Hurley, Mike Crispino, and I believe Sansom Johnson
- 0:08will be on the show later. That'll be eight o'clock tonight for the Men's
- 0:11Basketball Coaches Show here on the Yukon Sports Network and online via the Varsity Network
- 0:16app in the Varsity network dot com. More with Gino as we talk you
- 0:20kind of women's basketball. The defense you mentioned that was it as a communications
- 0:25issue with your defense on Sunday because it seemed like some people gravitated to two
- 0:31players and let one get free on a couple of occasions. Yeah, yeah,
- 0:41I guess you could say, you know, the closing staff has not
- 0:50done a very good job of explaining to our players the things that we need
- 1:00done, because we spent a month and a half and I bet you sixty
- 1:04percent of all our bright practices we're on defense, right and yet the the
- 1:17defensive part was I think, given how we normally play defense at this place,
- 1:26about as bad as I've ever seen it. We haven't given up ninety
- 1:29two points in thirteen years. That's not because all of a sudden we played
- 1:33a team that's really really good at scoring. No, it's it's because when
- 1:41you have a team of players who the majority of them have trouble communicating,
- 1:49Like, what do you mean they don't speak English? No, yeah,
- 1:51they speak English, Like they don't know what to say. Oh no,
- 1:55they know what to say. They just have trouble communicating. They just choose
- 2:00not to And it's it's confounding to the coaching staff because I've not experienced that
- 2:13in a long long time. I've not experienced this in a long long time.
- 2:17We just have a team of bad communicators. Bad not just you know,
- 2:25struggle with it, there's just bad at it. And h I think
- 2:31it's it's difficult when one or two of them have to be the voice for
- 2:36all of them. Yeah, you know. Yeah, so you just have
- 2:40a lot of very very very quiet you know, and and then when you
- 2:47get on the court and it's loud and the environment is heavy, the only
- 2:57way you can get through it is by communicating. And if you don't,
- 3:00you saw what happens right. There were twenty two files by your team.
- 3:05Now, granted some of them came late, but the one area of the
- 3:08game that it turned out to be a pretty kill. Big killer was those
- 3:13first five files of the first two minutes of the third quarter. And that
- 3:15was example of what you've talked about with me before. Yeah, I mean
- 3:22that started in our exhibition game against Syracuse. And again that goes back to
- 3:29when there's no when there is a lack of communication, you're late, and
- 3:35when you're late, you foul. Okay, So that's number one on the
- 3:38on the defensive end. Two, when you give up second shots, the
- 3:47second one is usually a foul. And thirdly, to put a capra on
- 3:55it, the umbrella on top of that is we've been working really, really
- 4:01really hard to make our players more disciplined. You know that. It's it's
- 4:11a it's a difficult concept right now for how we want to play, for
- 4:16players to buy in that you need to be more disciplined and that we're we're
- 4:29not disciplined enough, and those things. Those things were evident on Saturday,
- 4:39So Sunday someday. Yeah, part of it and part of it too.
- 4:42I think you mentioned some of the mental toughness aspect of the discipline. Mental
- 4:46toughness they kind of go hand in hand. Well, Yeah, mental toughness
- 4:51comes from when you know, you know that you're prepared. You know that
- 4:59you're kind of going in you know exactly what you're gonna do, what your
- 5:03teammates are gonna do. You know, the average person out there might think
- 5:10you got this player or this player, this player and this players. You
- 5:12know, so they should be able to do this, this, this and
- 5:15this. Well, yeah, if you put them all out there individually,
- 5:19yes they probably could. But when you put them out there together and there
- 5:24has to be a sense of, you know, everybody's gotta gel and everybody's
- 5:30got to cooperate, and everything's gotta fit. Yep, that's a whole different
- 5:35story. And sometimes it comes early, and it happens quickly, and sometimes
- 5:43it takes time. Indeed, uh Easy is off to a tough start,
- 5:48not only shooting the basketball, but it just seems like there's something missing with
- 5:54Aasies game right now. I don't know if it's a lack of confidence.
- 5:58She talks about it. She's a own worst end me at times. What
- 6:00have you seen from her on a day to day basis? You know,
- 6:04the same thing that you've seen the first two games, you know, and
- 6:12it just comes and goes, and you don't know why it comes, and
- 6:15you don't know why it goes. So you just know that when it's there,
- 6:23it's really really really really hard for anybody to control her, if anybody
- 6:28contain her. And when it's not there as much, and there's you know,
- 6:36there's a different there's a different Easy on the floor because now you know,
- 6:42sometimes there's a overthinking avolved instead of just playing. And I'm not saying
- 6:53that I want players who don't think, period because I've coached some of them
- 6:57and they're just as bad, if not worse. But I don't I don't
- 7:02know that anybody on our team works to the level that Aisy works, that
- 7:11prepares herself, to the level that Easy prepares herself. Whereas that's consistent every
- 7:16single day, and their effort, their execution of everything that you want executed,
- 7:23everything that you want from player effort wise, nobody you cannot pick one
- 7:29player who does it better than her. So it's not a matter of I'm
- 7:35not prepared, I don't work hard, I don't put the time in,
- 7:39and and it's a mystery. Everybody has a shooting slump. It happens.
- 7:53Hey, I'm I'm not ready to I'm not ready to trade her for anybody
