Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The old what counts as media debate is back. The
- 0:02Speaker 1: Broadcasting Standars Authority, the BSA says the rule book stuck
- 0:05Speaker 1: in nineteen eighty nine. It wants the law change to
- 0:08Speaker 1: keep up with digital only content. This is your podcast
- 0:11Speaker 1: stuff on the internet. Acting p Laura McClure has lodged
- 0:15Speaker 1: a member's bill back in November last year to abolish
- 0:17Speaker 1: the BSA altogether and joins me, Now, Laura, good morning.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Good morning running.
- 0:24Speaker 1: So you want to get rid of the BSA altogether,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and they are saying they want more power. Why do
- 0:30Speaker 1: you think that, you know, broadcasters like this one shouldn't
- 0:33Speaker 1: be covered by a BSA. Yeah.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Look, I think times were different back in the nineteen eighties.
- 0:40Speaker 2: For example, you know, we only had radio and television,
- 0:43Speaker 2: and things have moved on, and the BSA we're right
- 0:47Speaker 2: about two things. One, you know, their revenue is declining
- 0:50Speaker 2: and to the world has changed significantly. We have quite
- 0:55Speaker 2: a lot of other mechanisms and oversight, and I don't
- 0:59Speaker 2: believe that the essay is relevant anymore.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Do you think it's unfair on traditional broadcasters to have
- 1:05Speaker 1: to follow these rules and others?
- 1:06Speaker 2: Not? Absolutely. I think it's completely unfair In a changing
- 1:11Speaker 2: world where people are consuming media and all kinds of
- 1:14Speaker 2: different places, that traditional broadcasters are paying an awful amount
- 1:18Speaker 2: of levies the quite frankly a service. I don't think
- 1:21Speaker 2: that they need more.
- 1:23Speaker 1: How do you make sure that people have some kind
- 1:25Speaker 1: of news that they can sort of loosely trust. And
- 1:29Speaker 1: I know, I know there aren't many who trust mainstream
- 1:32Speaker 1: media outlets anymore anyway, But you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 1:36Speaker 1: when something big happens, you go to a trusted source.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Do you not need some regulation for that?
- 1:44Speaker 2: Oh? Look absolutely, I mean we already have the Media Council,
- 1:48Speaker 2: which all of our big name media are signed into,
- 1:52Speaker 2: where you know, people can look to and make complaints
- 1:55Speaker 2: if you see things that are objectionable or illegal. We
- 1:58Speaker 2: have the Classifications Office can report TODA if it's online.
- 2:02Speaker 2: We have neat safe advertising standards already. That there is
- 2:05Speaker 2: an awful lot out there when it comes to regulation
- 2:08Speaker 2: and bureaucracy already, and given the fact that people are
- 2:12Speaker 2: consuming media in all kinds of different places, really it
- 2:17Speaker 2: really is unfair for mainstream media to have to adhere
- 2:21Speaker 2: or comply to essentially paying levies. I mean they have
- 2:25Speaker 2: barely any any complaints realistically, but I do think there is.
- 2:29Speaker 2: It is important for people who have oversight and trust
- 2:31Speaker 2: and accountability, and I think that we've got enough dere
- 2:34Speaker 2: all right.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Laura, appreciate your time this morning. Laura McLure, who's the
