True discipleship is not an add-on to a comfortable life but a complete reordering of our loves and loyalties. Taking up the cross means embracing the very path of rejection that Christ walked, yet this is not a sorrowful burden but a joyful participation in His sufferings. Because He first denied Himself for us, our self-denial becomes a response of love, not a grim duty.
