Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome to the Jagxam.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm Ken, Nannie Stevens, Brian Sexton, and John oserre with
- 0:20Speaker 2: me today. We're gonna have your Thanksgiving pre edition here.
- 0:23Speaker 2: On Wednesdays, we get ready for the holiday and we
- 0:25Speaker 2: get ready for the dag Wars to take on the
- 0:27Speaker 2: Texans this weekend. We heard from Doug Peterson yesterday for
- 0:30Speaker 2: the first time since the bye weekend. We did learn
- 0:32Speaker 2: a couple of things, or at least some new information.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So big thing number one is internal changes. Doug Peterson
- 0:38Speaker 2: not overly forthcoming with what those changes are, but he
- 0:42Speaker 2: did say there were changes made. Yeah, we're nothing that
- 0:48Speaker 2: will share at this time, and I personally thank you
- 0:55Speaker 2: just to be a little bit more clear on that,
- 0:57Speaker 2: you know, it's it's sort of I say that say
- 1:00Speaker 2: this that the lot.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Of these are in house, and then these are things
- 1:02Speaker 3: that we focus on as a staff and as a team,
- 1:05Speaker 3: and I just don't think they need to be in
- 1:08Speaker 3: the open right now.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Brian, we don't know what the exact changes are going
- 1:12Speaker 2: to be. Maybe we'll figure them out on Sunday when
- 1:14Speaker 2: we see the team go out there against the Texans,
- 1:16Speaker 2: but it's a little too late for changes at this point,
- 1:18Speaker 2: are you just happy they're doing something different.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I'm not quite sure what you're asking Kai, am I
- 1:23Speaker 3: supposed to interpret what he?
- 1:25Speaker 4: I mean, it's just.
- 1:26Speaker 3: So big, Yeah, I mean he leaves it open for
- 1:30Speaker 3: us to guess, and that's dangerous in and of itself.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Or we're talking about who's calling the plays, whether they're
- 1:36Speaker 3: eliminating the rotation on defense that has caused so much angst.
- 1:42Speaker 3: It probably does make sense for him not to share
- 1:44Speaker 3: all of it, but a little bit of it would
- 1:47Speaker 3: make it a little bit easier to describe.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Have no clue what they are. I neither its John.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I have my thoughts, but I'm I'm not gonna share
- 1:57Speaker 1: them at this time.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Okay, I appreciate you announcing that big thing number two.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Practice makes perfect Trevor Lawrence. We haven't seen for a
- 2:05Speaker 2: couple of weeks. Matt Jones as a starter for the
- 2:06Speaker 2: last two weeks before the buye. He was at practice
- 2:09Speaker 2: on Monday. John, we don't know still at this point.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I think we'll have maybe a little bit better idea
- 2:14Speaker 2: at the end of the week. But they purposely thegue
- 2:16Speaker 2: usually with these kinds of things. But it was good
- 2:18Speaker 2: to see Trevor back out there.
- 2:19Speaker 5: John, Yeah, and I think it's gonna say. I have
- 2:23Speaker 5: my thoughts on this too.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I'm not sure. It feels Brian and Kai like.
- 2:31Speaker 5: It's going to be a week where we don't find
- 2:34Speaker 5: out much hard information about Trevor Lawrence and they take
- 2:37Speaker 5: him into the weekend. I kind of feel like he'll play.
- 2:40Speaker 5: I guess if he wasn't going to play, I think
- 2:45Speaker 5: they would probably take the same approach as they did
- 2:47Speaker 5: in that last game where he didn't play before the
- 2:50Speaker 5: bye and as kind of Tea leaves, thank goodness we
- 2:53Speaker 5: have this to discuss, because I'm not sure what else
- 2:54Speaker 5: we would discuss, But.
- 2:56Speaker 1: That's sort of how it feels.
- 2:58Speaker 5: I think he'll play, and you know, frankly, Brian, as
- 3:01Speaker 5: somebody who looks for storylines, let's cross our fingers in
- 3:05Speaker 5: hope plays yeah, because it'll be interesting and it'll feel real.
- 3:10Speaker 5: I don't know how it's going to feel if and
- 3:12Speaker 5: when Trevor Lawrence is done for the season, if that
- 3:15Speaker 5: even happens.
- 3:17Speaker 3: So, you know, normally when they play the vague, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 3: the game with quarterback. I mean, it's obviously to keep
- 3:23Speaker 3: the other team guessing and make them spend some time
- 3:25Speaker 3: preparing for Mac Jones or CJ. Bethern. But what would
- 3:28Speaker 3: be a setback for him? I mean, he's not going
- 3:29Speaker 3: to take a hit on the practice field this week.
- 3:31Speaker 3: So if he looks good and feels good and where are.
- 3:35Speaker 4: You on Friday?
- 3:36Speaker 3: And even then you get the sense douggers are going
- 3:38Speaker 3: to make any sort of a public proclamation on this thing.
- 3:40Speaker 3: But he wasn't on the practice field the week of
- 3:42Speaker 3: the Lions game. I would think that the fact that
- 3:46Speaker 3: he's out there getting some first team reps, which is
- 3:47Speaker 3: what we saw when practice was open, would indicate that
- 3:50Speaker 3: he's going to play.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Knock the rust off a little bit. Hopefully we see
- 3:53Speaker 2: Trevor out there on Sunday. Our final big thing today
- 3:56Speaker 2: can be Sunday showed out and they're taking on the Texans.
- 3:57Speaker 2: It's a divisional battle. Texans big lost last week and
- 4:01Speaker 2: just what we've been able to see, Brian, what would
- 4:03Speaker 2: a win this week do for this team, especially right now?
- 4:06Speaker 3: Well, I mean they're the class of the division. They're
- 4:08Speaker 3: seven and five. Even though they haven't played well the
- 4:10Speaker 3: last couple of weeks, they are still a team that
- 4:12Speaker 3: the Jaguars have been chasing. Since well, since this season started,
- 4:17Speaker 3: and they were holding them off when last season ended.
- 4:19Speaker 3: So they're the class, They're the top of the food chain,
- 4:23Speaker 3: and to go out there and beat them would indicate
- 4:26Speaker 3: that maybe you're not as bad as you looked against
- 4:29Speaker 3: the Lions, and that would be a big statement for
- 4:31Speaker 3: this team to make.
- 4:31Speaker 5: John Yeah, and I think they should realize that. In
- 4:35Speaker 5: the last two meetings with these teams, the Jaguars won
- 4:39Speaker 5: the one at the end of last season. It was
- 4:41Speaker 5: really the last breath of life for this team because
- 4:47Speaker 5: Cincinnati came next and all of a sudden, everything started
- 4:49Speaker 5: falling apart.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And they know.
- 4:52Speaker 5: I don't want to say the Jaguars were the better
- 4:54Speaker 5: team in Houston, but they sure had plenty of chances
- 4:57Speaker 5: to put that game away and win. So the difference
- 4:59Speaker 5: was isn't that much? I think the Jaguar I think
- 5:01Speaker 5: it's the game the Jaguars can win. It won't save
- 5:05Speaker 5: this season, but I guess it would if you assume
- 5:09Speaker 5: that the Texans are going to be a team that
- 5:12Speaker 5: the Jaguars as a franchise has to deal with going forward,
- 5:15Speaker 5: beating them, holding serve at home, bidding them for the
- 5:18Speaker 5: first time here since seventeen. It would matter in the
- 5:21Speaker 5: sense that there wouldn't be a tilting toward the Texans
- 5:27Speaker 5: feel right now, and maybe that would be a good
- 5:30Speaker 5: thing going forward.
- 5:31Speaker 3: And Kay, I think it's important to point out they're
- 5:33Speaker 3: the best team remaining on the schedule, right, I mean, yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 3: the Titans, the Jets, the Texans are.
- 5:38Speaker 4: The best team.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Love, So if you have it in your mind, let's
- 5:42Speaker 3: go on a little winning streak here at the end.
- 5:44Speaker 3: To start with the best team and to beat them
- 5:46Speaker 3: would give you something to build on.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Stay with us on Jagsam.
- 5:50Speaker 2: We do not know what those internal changes are, but
- 5:52Speaker 2: we're going to give you our best guess after the break.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Fields Autogroup Jacksonville, Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group. You can
- 6:06Speaker 2: go to Fieldsauto dot com to check them out.
- 6:09Speaker 1: This school the badness, this schools.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Welcome back into jacks Aam.
- 6:16Speaker 1: We're gonna do a little this or that.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Doug Peterson talking about internal changes on both sides of
- 6:21Speaker 2: the football, but didn't want to elaborate any more than that,
- 6:23Speaker 2: but we're going to do our best to guess as
- 6:25Speaker 2: to what those might be. We'll start with some defensive
- 6:28Speaker 2: changes and I just picked two that I would like
- 6:30Speaker 2: to see, and I'll want your guys to point of view.
- 6:32Speaker 2: If we could get Ventrel Miller's a starter and more snaps,
- 6:35Speaker 2: or Eric Armstead only starting as defensive tackle, which one
- 6:39Speaker 2: would you.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Like to see.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Armstead is a defensive tackle.
- 6:42Speaker 3: He's been a non factor to my site as a
- 6:46Speaker 3: defensive end, you know what, rushing from that wide nine.
- 6:50Speaker 3: But in the middle, he is tall, he's long, he
- 6:54Speaker 3: is the kind of guy with his arms stretched, is
- 6:57Speaker 3: in the field of view of the quarterback. I would
- 6:59Speaker 3: love to see him back where he had his most
- 7:03Speaker 3: success in San Francisco, which is lined up in the
- 7:05Speaker 3: three technique.
- 7:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree with you, except I don't know. You know,
- 7:11Speaker 5: it's hard for Trayvon and Josh to play every snap
- 7:16Speaker 5: out there, and I don't know who else to put
- 7:18Speaker 5: out there.
- 7:19Speaker 1: But I would take that.
- 7:22Speaker 5: With Armstead playing in the middle absolutely. At the same time,
- 7:26Speaker 5: I want to see Vntrel in there, Like I'd like
- 7:28Speaker 5: to see a game where Ventrel plays most snaps every snap.
- 7:32Speaker 5: It's not gonna happen, because you know, I could take
- 7:33Speaker 5: Devin Boy completely off the field, but gearing more toward
- 7:38Speaker 5: both I would like to see.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I'd love to see some more of Ventral in there
- 7:42Speaker 2: for sure.
- 7:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Looking at the offensive side of the football, Press Taylor
- 7:47Speaker 2: and Doug Peterson, we've been talking about play calling for
- 7:49Speaker 2: what seemingly as months, and while we both think, I
- 7:52Speaker 2: think we all think that they call pretty similar games.
- 7:55Speaker 2: That may be one of the changes that we've been
- 7:57Speaker 2: talking about. Because Doug didn't answer it before the the
- 8:00Speaker 2: bye week, and now he's saying there's changes.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Well, he has an answered it all season, right, I
- 8:03Speaker 3: mean he has left it of two so that people
- 8:05Speaker 3: could guess. And when I'm at a speaking engagement or
- 8:08Speaker 3: in line of publics and someone starts railing about Press
- 8:10Speaker 3: Taylor and his play calling, extinction and they should fire him,
- 8:13Speaker 3: like are.
- 8:13Speaker 4: You sure he's calling them?
- 8:14Speaker 3: I mean, Doug could have clearly said I'm calling the
- 8:17Speaker 3: place or Press is calling the place, but he didn't
- 8:19Speaker 3: want to do that. Again, he's an old school guy.
- 8:22Speaker 3: He likes to leave people guessing his opponent. Also, you
- 8:26Speaker 3: know John there of the same mind. They've worked so
- 8:28Speaker 3: closely together through the years. I don't know that it
- 8:31Speaker 3: matters which one calls the place.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I've thought this since day one, that it's been
- 8:38Speaker 5: an overblown issue. It's been a hot point issue the
- 8:41Speaker 5: frankly Doug has created by leaving it be an issue.
- 8:45Speaker 5: I don't think he thinks it's a big deal. I
- 8:46Speaker 5: don't think it's a big deal with fans think it's
- 8:48Speaker 5: a big deal. Who calls play again, I think you're
- 8:54Speaker 5: getting mostly the same result no matter who calls him
- 8:58Speaker 5: flip a coin.
- 9:00Speaker 3: He's been adamant about it going back to his days
- 9:02Speaker 3: in Philadelphia. Reportedly, that's what cost him the head coaching
- 9:05Speaker 3: job when he was with the Eagles was that he
- 9:07Speaker 3: wouldn't make that change. And of course he stood up
- 9:10Speaker 3: here right after the Lions game and wouldn't let people
- 9:13Speaker 3: point fingers as coaches, he said, point him at me.
- 9:15Speaker 3: So I don't think you'll ever know until one or
- 9:19Speaker 3: both of them are doing something somewhere else who was calling.
- 9:22Speaker 2: The placer get some insight after the fact.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Maybe maybe all.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Right, coming up after the break, we're gonna tell you
- 9:28Speaker 2: what we're thankful for this Thanksgiving for Jaguars bum For
- 9:42Speaker 2: eleven years, Dreamfinders Holmes have been proud to call themselves
- 9:44Speaker 2: the official homebuilder of the Jacksonville Jaguars. You can visit
- 9:46Speaker 2: Dreamfindersomes dot com for all of the available inventory and
- 9:50Speaker 2: go Jags back here on jag Dam Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So things are not where we expected them to be
- 9:59Speaker 2: at this time year, but we're still thankful because we
- 10:01Speaker 2: get to cover football every single day and we found
- 10:03Speaker 2: a couple of things to be thankful for. I think
- 10:05Speaker 2: that's fair enough. But relative to football, yes, relative to football,
- 10:08Speaker 2: relative to this team, Brian, I think the stadium deal
- 10:11Speaker 2: has to be right up there this year.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Well, it is for me because for so many years
- 10:15Speaker 3: it was a question mark if the Jaguars would be
- 10:18Speaker 3: in this market long term. There was a time in
- 10:21Speaker 3: two thousand and two where the stadium was empty and
- 10:23Speaker 3: they were giving away tickets, and you always look to
- 10:25Speaker 3: the future and what would cement this team in this
- 10:29Speaker 3: town long term championships do that they don't have one
- 10:32Speaker 3: of those yet, But to have a stadium like the
- 10:35Speaker 3: one that they're calling the Stadium of the future to
- 10:38Speaker 3: look forward to and a long term, thirty year lease
- 10:42Speaker 3: means that you know, by the time we get to
- 10:44Speaker 3: the end of at least the Jaguars should have a
- 10:45Speaker 3: couple of championships and a tradition and a couple of generations.
- 10:49Speaker 3: I think the stadium represents the long term future of
- 10:53Speaker 3: the Jaguars and Jacksonville married together. So I'm personally very
- 10:56Speaker 3: thankful having been here since the beginning for sure.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Yeah I am as well.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I mean it's as somebody who I was around when
- 11:05Speaker 5: or say landed the helicopter in the seventies, nobody of
- 11:08Speaker 5: mine down the street had a Jacksonville Colt shirt all
- 11:11Speaker 5: that stuff.
- 11:12Speaker 1: So to have that be solidified.
- 11:16Speaker 5: Long after we're gone, Brian is it's a very cool thing,
- 11:20Speaker 5: and in the big picture matters more than the immediate.
- 11:24Speaker 5: We just need to get the immediate where it's more
- 11:26Speaker 5: fun than it.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you say the immediate would be really helpful right now,
- 11:30Speaker 3: but when you when you pull out and think about
- 11:32Speaker 3: your kids, kids, kids being able to be Draguars fans
- 11:35Speaker 3: like the people in Wisconsin are with Green Bay, that's meaningful.
- 11:39Speaker 2: I think one of the bright spots I always like
- 11:41Speaker 2: to point out is Brian Thomas Junior because I didn't
- 11:43Speaker 2: expect it. John we I think we were both on
- 11:45Speaker 2: the same page of let's get a corner, maybe someone
- 11:48Speaker 2: on defense. But Brian Thomas Junior is one of the
- 11:50Speaker 2: brightest spots we've had this ye.
- 11:52Speaker 5: Yeah, Brian and I both thought they might go offensive line.
- 11:54Speaker 5: I didn't know which direction they would go. Anybody who
- 11:58Speaker 5: reads me for the long term knows I expect very
- 12:01Speaker 5: little out of rookies usually, and Brian Thomas Junior.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Has far exceeded my expectation.
- 12:07Speaker 5: I think what's the most exciting is you can see
- 12:10Speaker 5: what he is, you can see what he's gonna be.
- 12:12Speaker 5: And you know, if usually rookies are operating at about
- 12:17Speaker 5: forty percent of what they're going to become. When this
- 12:20Speaker 5: kid gets everything, meaning NFL level professionalism, when the game
- 12:27Speaker 5: slows down for him, he's got a chance to be
- 12:29Speaker 5: top five and you know who knows how good he
- 12:32Speaker 5: can be.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I guess what I'm getting that, Bryan.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Yeah, listen, I mean the unanswered prayers, right. I wanted
- 12:36Speaker 3: them to take offensive tackle. I really felt like in
- 12:38Speaker 3: this draft high which was so loaded with great on
- 12:40Speaker 3: young offensive tackles, and with Cam on his way out
- 12:43Speaker 3: and Walker Little on the last.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Year of his deal, I want him take a tackle.
- 12:47Speaker 3: And then this kid comes through in his revelation and
- 12:49Speaker 3: I'll just I'll use Jimmy Smith's phrase to me, wow,
- 12:52Speaker 3: standing on the sidelines of that Colts game. Before complementing
- 12:56Speaker 3: the Ring of Honor, he said, Wow, that kid is
- 12:59Speaker 3: really good. And Jimmy does throw around a lot of
- 13:01Speaker 3: compliments to other wide receivers, so that one really sticks
- 13:04Speaker 3: in my head. He is special. He will be that
- 13:07Speaker 3: guy who helps the quarterback with his game.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Right.
- 13:10Speaker 3: There's a lot of pieces they need to add, but
- 13:12Speaker 3: when you've got the quarterback and the wide receiver, mixing
- 13:15Speaker 3: the running back and the tight end, you've got some things.
- 13:18Speaker 3: But you got to have the alpha receiver. He's the
- 13:20Speaker 3: first alpha that we've had in Jacksonville since two thousand
- 13:23Speaker 3: and five.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Good when Jimmy was playing.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Yeah, it's good to see it.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Mine is a little bit. I have a two parter
- 13:30Speaker 2: because mine originally was I'm thankful we're not playing on
- 13:33Speaker 2: Thanksgiving because I thought we were gonna play this year.
- 13:35Speaker 2: That's the only franchise that hasn't played on Thanksgiving that
- 13:38Speaker 2: we're playing Detroit. Maybe we'll play that game. That wouldn't
- 13:40Speaker 2: have been very fun to see that Detroit game play
- 13:42Speaker 2: out this week, and also to have the break be
- 13:44Speaker 2: home with our families and be able to celebrate the holiday.
- 13:47Speaker 1: So I am thankful for that.
- 13:48Speaker 2: But then also breaking news today, Tyler Shatley is back,
- 13:51Speaker 2: and selfishly he is one of my favorite players that
- 13:53Speaker 2: I've ever covered. We're all big fans of him here
- 13:55Speaker 2: on the couch. So Tyler Shatley back in the house
- 13:57Speaker 2: on a practice squad makes me happy.
- 13:58Speaker 4: We look for Tyler and has a legitimate beard once again. Yes, man,
- 14:02Speaker 4: he takes it very, very seriously. I'm grateful for him
- 14:05Speaker 4: to be back to you.
- 14:06Speaker 3: He came here in twenty fourteen as an untrafted rookie
- 14:09Speaker 3: and stayed all those years. He's such a sage voice
- 14:14Speaker 3: in the locker room. Even though he wasn't a starter
- 14:15Speaker 3: or a star, he was a guy that you could
- 14:18Speaker 3: always go to for a little bit of perspective. He's
- 14:20Speaker 3: got it.
- 14:21Speaker 4: A great guy. Happy Thanksgiving, Glad to have.
- 14:24Speaker 1: You back to Yeah, no doubt and his eleventh season.
- 14:26Speaker 2: So nice to have an elder Jaguar statesman in the
- 14:28Speaker 2: house again once again. All right, say with us, We'll
- 14:30Speaker 2: tell you what's coming up the rest of the week
- 14:31Speaker 2: before the Texans game on Sunday, Jack's Fans, if you
- 14:43Speaker 2: want customized Jaguars furniture for your home, check got zipter
- 14:45Speaker 2: dot com to browse all the customizable options. Zip cher
- 14:48Speaker 2: Is furniture for fans. Also, this weekend's game against the Texans,
- 14:52Speaker 2: sponsored by the University of Florida Health is they are
- 14:55Speaker 2: proud healthcare partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. That's gonna be
- 14:58Speaker 2: this Sunday's game against the Texans. Also going to be
- 15:02Speaker 2: My Cause, My Cleats game, which is pretty cool because
- 15:04Speaker 2: each player gets to pick a cause or charity that's
- 15:06Speaker 2: really important to them and get to wear that on
- 15:08Speaker 2: their cleats, which normally they're very particular about what you
- 15:11Speaker 2: get to wear for your uniform. I believe those are
- 15:13Speaker 2: Ross Matti six is going to be representing the j Fund,
- 15:15Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence doing Wilson's Children's Hospital, and then my personal
- 15:19Speaker 2: favorite cleats I don't know if we have yes, Evan
- 15:21Speaker 2: Ingram is doing this special Education School of Florida and
- 15:25Speaker 2: he loves that. And then this is also coach Shoey
- 15:28Speaker 2: and some of the other coaches are going to be
- 15:31Speaker 2: representing triple negative breast cancer research to honor Showey's wife
- 15:35Speaker 2: who just finished treatment in October, so happy for that.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Lots of great causes.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Check it out.
- 15:39Speaker 2: We'll have a bunch of stuff posted throughout the week
- 15:41Speaker 2: about different players and what causes they're representing.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Yeah, the league is so percipity about uniform and socc length.
- 15:47Speaker 3: I mean, they have people with clipboards that walk around
- 15:49Speaker 3: on the sidelines before a game and you know, make
- 15:51Speaker 3: sure that guys aren't violating that. So it was really
- 15:54Speaker 3: nice to see when they let up for this a
- 15:56Speaker 3: few years ago and it was two or three players,
- 15:58Speaker 3: and now I think over the course of season, every
- 15:59Speaker 3: player the league gets to do this.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Yes, and it's nice to just kind of throw that
- 16:03Speaker 2: all away for a week. So very very fortunate, and
- 16:06Speaker 2: hopefully you guys have some good Thanksgiving plans.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Yes, I'm cooking. I'd love to cook and I'm excited
- 16:11Speaker 4: to do it as.
- 16:12Speaker 1: My sister's in town, so that'll be great.
- 16:14Speaker 2: We love it and you I'll probably take the dog
- 16:16Speaker 2: to the beach and then I'll find a turkey somewhere,
- 16:17Speaker 2: as I always do. We appreciate you guys joining us.
- 16:20Speaker 2: We are thankful for you guys joining us. We'll be
- 16:22Speaker 2: back on Monday to talk about that Texans game. Enjoy
- 16:24Speaker 2: the weekend, Enjoy your holiday.
