- 1:41So anyways guys, this is Noah's movie week.
- 1:46Yes, Sir. Noah the floor buddy is yours
- 1:49for this very, as Alex called it, split oinkle episode.
- 1:54It is. It will be a split oinkle
- 1:56episode this week that I picked the 1993 Trey Parker Mad Stone
- 2:02movie Cannibal the Musical, formally known formerly known as
- 2:06Alfred Packer the Musical. Is that what it?
- 2:09Was called, Yeah. So originally they made the
- 2:11movie under Alfred Packer the Musical, but when Troma picked
- 2:14it up and distributed it, they wanted to change the name to
- 2:17Cannibal because they didn't think that people would know who
- 2:20Alfred Packer was. Which is true unless you live in
- 2:23Colorado because his his story is very famous there.
- 2:27OK. We'll get into that.
- 2:29Yeah, he's a real guy. And the the story, the true
- 2:33story is shockingly, I mean the movie rather the movie is
- 2:37shockingly accurate to the real story.
- 2:41There's a lot of, there's a lot of differences.
- 2:43I've been doing a lot of research a very, you know, on
- 2:47the historical figure website, you might have heard of
- 2:50it.wikipedia.org. So we got lots of, we got lots
- 2:54of good stuff. But first I wanted to be talking
- 2:56about the movie a little bit. So we've all I think we've all
- 3:00seen it before this before our watching of it.
- 3:02So when, what, how did you guys find it and how did you watch it
- 3:06the first time You. Want to go 1st Alex?
- 3:09You want me to go first? I.
- 3:11Can go well. I didn't watch it up and not
- 3:16that long ago when Nick showed me it.
- 3:19That was your first time. That was my first time I'd I
- 3:23remember seeing the cover art for it hundreds of times, but I
- 3:28never paid like any attention to it, never clicked on it.
- 3:32I just like can't lie. I said musical.
- 3:35I kind of just like. Yeah.
- 3:37Now, in the way it was, I always thought it said Cannonball the
- 3:40Musical, which? I did too.
- 3:42I always thought it said Cannonball.
- 3:45Which that's a thing. Is it?
- 3:48I believe so, but it mean it was years like it was like what,
- 3:54three years ago? Yeah.
- 3:57Will you show me this? Yeah, just about and I.
- 4:00Fell in love with it because I was like, oh it's fucking mad
- 4:02Stone and Trey Parker. Like yeah, we love everything.
- 4:05These guys shit out everything. And it took me by surprise when
- 4:14I learned this was not produced but put out by Troma, our
- 4:18favorite. People.
- 4:19Yep, They sort of, they sort of saw it when it was being
- 4:25released and going around to festivals and stuff and they
- 4:30were like, they just sort of distributed it.
- 4:34Excuse me? Yeah.
- 4:35What happened there? My, my voice is a bit cracking
- 4:38right now, but what about you, Nick?
- 4:42Yeah, so I know for a fact that I had seen this in my Uncle
- 4:48Keith's goddamn like VHS collection.
- 4:53I know for a fact I saw it there.
- 4:56I had never watched it as Alex said, dude, I thought it said
- 5:00Cannonball the Musical until I was like 14.
- 5:05I remember I, I, I, I know exactly where I was.
- 5:08We were living. We had moved to Livonia at this
- 5:11point in time and I have been on Xbox Live in the way the Xbox
- 5:16Marketplace worked back in the day was it was actually really
- 5:19nice because you could just buy movie.
- 5:20I don't know if you guys remember like right on Xbox,
- 5:22like the UI was so fun to play around it and I would just go
- 5:26buy movies all the time. So I remember seeing that album
- 5:30or cover art for the movie and I went all right, Cannonball the
- 5:34musical and I just because I still thought it said cannonball
- 5:38the musical, but I had like this fucking crazy face on it and I
- 5:42was like, all right, I'll buy this whatever.
- 5:43And I'm like, are these the South Park guys?
- 5:46I was like, is this the toxic avenger guys?
- 5:49It's like, OK. And then it I see like cannibal
- 5:53the I was like, oh, this could be cool, but I avoided it for so
- 5:56long because I, you know, it did say musical as well.
- 5:59I was like, musical. I don't know.
- 6:01And then I again, I also did think it's a cannonball.
- 6:04I don't know why, but that's what I thought.
- 6:08But yeah, I rented it on Xbox or I bought it on my Xbox 360 and
- 6:13then watched it and I was like, whoa, this is hilarious.
- 6:17Like everything about it was good.
- 6:20You know, like Alex said, and I'm sure Noah will bring up
- 6:23like, like the South Park guys, Trey and Matt, like everything
- 6:29they do, I love. Like I absolutely adore the
- 6:33things they do. They don't give a shit.
- 6:35They do what they want to do. They make what they want to
- 6:37make, and they also prop that Casa Bonita.
- 6:41So again, they do what they want to do.
- 6:43This is one of those things where it's like they did what
- 6:45they wanted to do, made something awesome, and the music
- 6:49itself is good. Like it's all good.
- 6:53Like everything about this movie is just good.
- 6:55So that's my first experience with it.
- 6:57Well, they're, if you only watch South Park, I mean, you can kind
- 7:01of tell because of the amount of like songs that are in South
- 7:04Park. But they're like big musical
- 7:07nerds. Of course, everybody knows it
- 7:09now because they made like the Book of Mormon and stuff.
- 7:11But this is like this is this is their first day out and this is
- 7:14what they decided to do. Dude, that's it was just.
- 7:18Ridiculous. And they killed it.
- 7:19And they crushed it. Dude.
- 7:21Some of these songs are bangers. Well, this was this a college
- 7:26project of theirs or no? Yeah, so they made this movie
- 7:30over spring break, filming on the weekends.
- 7:34They were they managed to get a little bit of money together The
- 7:38so the whole budget of the movie was $125,000.
- 7:42They, like I said, they shot it on weekends at spring break.
- 7:46They shot the movie in real locations in Colorado, including
- 7:51the real courthouse that Alfred Packer was tried in.
- 7:55Most of the rest of the town was filmed inside of a western
- 7:58themed park in Canyon City during the filming.
- 8:04During the filming, there were a bit of mishaps like Trey
- 8:08suffering A hairline fracture when he was thrown off one of
- 8:10the horses that played Leanne. And there were crew members and
- 8:14cast who went into shock when they were were jumping into the
- 8:18the big river because that was that river.
- 8:21It was like the middle of winter for them.
- 8:23That's for real. They'd like jumped in there.
- 8:25And apparently some of them suffered from the cold a little.
- 8:27Bit so ridiculous. Dude, yeah, like all of it, all
- 8:36of it is made like gorilla style.
- 8:38Like they were just shooting in locations like they were
- 8:42shooting on their school campus. Like I mentioned during we were
- 8:47watching it when Polly Prize singing her song.
- 8:50That's at the university library, just on a big staircase
- 8:55in the library. That's sweet.
- 8:58And you can see like the background.
- 8:59You can see there's like a lamp and like a paintings on the wall
- 9:06and like light fixtures in the background.
- 9:10There's a lot of like, like we mentioned there, the South Park
- 9:14guys. So there's a lot of references
- 9:17that it's, it's a little bit murky the timeline because they
- 9:21had already the spirit of Christmas.
- 9:22They'd already made that. So they were working on the
- 9:25pilot of South Park while they were making this movie.
- 9:29So you see things that you would recognize in South Park, like
- 9:33you can hear like various voices and then on screen box it even
- 9:38says like Hartman voice on the on the subtitles.
- 9:43So you get like little voices. The alien that you see in the
- 9:47background all the time makes an appearance as the snowman.
- 9:50I don't know if you guys noticed it, but alien, Well, he's.
- 9:53Yeah, well, he's tap dancing. Well, Swan is tap dancing.
- 9:56If you go back, there's a single shot where the head of the
- 9:59snowman is sculpted like the alien.
- 10:03That's ridiculous. I didn't know that.
- 10:04Yeah. Go ahead.
- 10:09No, I just, I didn't know like the grey aliens that we.
- 10:12Yeah, Yep, it's head is all like sculpted and tall like that.
- 10:16That's sweet, I didn't know that.
- 10:19You got the guy who plays the judge Is Randy's dad or not
- 10:23Randy's dad, Trey's dad, Randy. Who is the inspiration for Randy
- 10:29Marsh? Yeah.
- 10:31And you got Trey doing all of the Japanese that is spoken by
- 10:34the Native Americans. This is an insane, it's an
- 10:37insane thing to say. It's just everything they did in
- 10:42this movie was just done so good.
- 10:45Like they had shit for a budget which I'm sure you'll tell the
- 10:48audience what the budget was they.
- 10:51You already did. Oh.
- 10:52Yeah, 125, yeah. So like nothing like they just
- 10:58did it. The the result here is so
- 11:00fucking good. They it's it's it's funny again,
- 11:04the songs are fucking on point. And like, it's it's not just
- 11:09like typical funny. There's like a lot of just a lot
- 11:12of the bleed over from this to South Park is so evident.
- 11:16There's some of some of the, some of the jokes are a little
- 11:21more subtle than I remember them.
- 11:22Like I kind of remember it because I haven't watched this
- 11:24in a while, but I remember being like wall to wall with jokes.
- 11:27But it's actually like, there's a lot of just like movie going
- 11:30on here, Like they're just kind of moving through it.
- 11:35A lot of the melodies are used in South Park.
- 11:38Yes, yeah. There's so fun fact, it's in
- 11:43Season 4 of South Park. At the end of the episode,
- 11:47there's the Braniff end card. It's the one with the plane.
- 11:52Yeah, the little tune that's playing over that is the tune to
- 11:55Spadoingle. Yeah, hold it.
- 12:00Fuck. You.
- 12:04That's crazy. If you go back, you go back.
- 12:07It's all the episodes in Season 4 and I think it bleeds into
- 12:10Season 5 as well, but you can hear it as that end card and I
- 12:14remember we were watching South Park me and Brooke and she knows
- 12:17that the first time she's like, wait a second, that's.
- 12:19The winkle, of course. Brooke noticed it though, too.
- 12:22Yeah. That's awesome.
- 12:25So the movie, like the movie came out and it was sort of like
- 12:29a cult to the cult classic type thing.
- 12:32After South Park released the Tromag, people learned about
- 12:36this movie that the South Park folks had made a movie before
- 12:40South Park and they but at that time it like I said, it was
- 12:45still known as Alfred Packer the musical.
- 12:48So they re released it under the new name Cannibal because they
- 12:51didn't think people would know where Alfred Packer was.
- 12:55Troma considers Cannibal to be one of its best films despite
- 12:59them not really having a hand in it.
- 13:01But they, you know, they, they did it a lot of help by
- 13:05distributing it a little bit better they got.
- 13:08They got they got more eyes on it.
- 13:10Yeah, it would have been seen by a lot of people now because of
- 13:14course South Park is huge now, but at the time, like it
- 13:17probably wouldn't have been seen by as many people.
- 13:21In 2008, as the first of the TRO Masterpiece collection, Cannibal
- 13:26was released on a DVD with extra footage and early short films
- 13:30that Trey and Matt made. And I need to hunt down that DVD
- 13:34because those do not appear to exist anywhere else.
- 13:37Those short films. Yeah.
- 13:39EBay. Definitely.
- 13:42The traumatic collection, you said, right?
- 13:44Tro masterpiece. Tro masterpiece.
- 13:46OK, Traumatic's also a good one though too.
- 13:49Just they so they released it on DVD with the extra stuff and
- 13:54then it was released again in 2008 and then again on Blu-ray
- 13:58in 2024. Yes.
- 14:01So now you can get it. Yeah, now you can get it on on
- 14:04that sweet, sweet Blu-ray. Here's there's this record
- 14:09company I follow called Enjoy the Tunes Records.
- 14:11Yep, they just put it out. They just put out the entire
- 14:15soundtrack on vinyl. Really.
- 14:17That's kind of dope. Oh.
- 14:18That's awesome. Such a good fucking movie dude.
- 14:21I've I've always loved this movie since the moment I saw it.
- 14:25That's like another movie like where Noah and I, it was just it
- 14:29kind of like brought up in conversation one day.
- 14:32It's like Cannibal the musical. There's Noah's like Cannibal the
- 14:34musical. I love that.
- 14:35I was like, what? That's?
- 14:38It's kind of like, it's like a South Park iceberg kind of
- 14:42thing. It's like, yeah, 'cause people
- 14:45know, like basketball people know orgasmo, but I don't know
- 14:47if a lot of people have heard of or seen this.
- 14:52Even if they've heard of it, Yeah, I don't know if they've.
- 14:54Seen it. My manager, perfect example,
- 14:56like his low South Park. Yeah, about South Park all the
- 14:59time. Loves basketball, loves orgasmo.
- 15:01And I brought up this movie. He's like, I've never heard of
- 15:04it. And then like a week goes by and
- 15:07he comes back in. He was like, so I watched
- 15:09Cannibal the musical. I was like, yeah, he's like,
- 15:12it's some of the funniest shit I've ever watched.
- 15:14If you like South Park my boy going to like this because this.
- 15:19Like if they animated this it would just be an episode of
- 15:22South Park. Oh dude, yeah.
- 15:25Everything might grew and uncut. Yeah, everything like the way
- 15:30it's shot, like the effects that they use the, you know,
- 15:35whenever, like silly things happen with a prop.
- 15:37Like you could just you could picture that being a South Park
- 15:39episode. The voice over like the actual
- 15:43dubbing because there's, there's a lot of dubbing in that.
- 15:45The whole movie is ADR. Like the whole is it really the
- 15:51entire movie? Most of it is like, if not every
- 15:54single bit of it, you can. I mean, you can pretty clearly
- 15:57tell when it's real because yeah, it's like sound quality
- 16:00sounds like shit, but they like they had something that's really
- 16:03clear. Yeah, they had like barely 2
- 16:06cameras. But you Speaking of the dubbing
- 16:12and stuff, that's where Spadogo comes from because they
- 16:17originally, when they were shooting the first song,
- 16:19spadoical wasn't going to be in there.
- 16:21So they just put it in as like a placeholder word, like somebody
- 16:24just said some nonsense word and then they never found another
- 16:28word to put there. So it just stuck as spadoical.
- 16:31And then they use they use spadoical as as many different
- 16:36meanings in many different contexts throughout the movie.
- 16:39Yeah, they when they follow, they go Spadoinkel.
- 16:41Yeah, sure isn't. It's anything you want.
- 16:45Sure is a Spadoinkel horse. Yes.
- 16:49We got all kinds of stuff, but yeah.
- 16:55Do you guys have any other thoughts?
- 16:56Anything. Anything specific?
- 16:59Dude how did they do the practical effects?
- 17:02Oh yeah, there was some good prosthetics in this.
- 17:04There's some very good prosthetics in this, especially
- 17:06being for some college kids with little to no money.
- 17:10Yeah, like the end kill. Pretty much like the final kill
- 17:16in the woods. It's like, God damn, dude,
- 17:18there's so much going on there. Well, it's the final kills and
- 17:21the stuff, it happened at the very beginning, but it's
- 17:23supposed to be the stuff that happens later.
- 17:26There's some like there's some good stuff in there.
- 17:28There's like he like rips somebody's jaw open and rips out
- 17:31their tongue. Like there's some good stuff
- 17:33going on. Oh dude, yeah, well, at the back
- 17:35of the head explosions, we brought that up during one of
- 17:37the shootings. There's a very good back of the
- 17:41head explosion, very good use of gore as well, because it's like
- 17:46it's it's not as gore. It's I mean, it's it gets gory,
- 17:50but it's like not that the entire thing, like the entire
- 17:53that's not the focus of the film, which I think is to its
- 17:55benefit you. Know, but the most part it's
- 17:58like a straight comedy. Yeah, it's like a it's Trey
- 18:01Parker movie. Comedy.
- 18:03Yeah, musical comedy. Because it is a very much little
- 18:06musical, every 3-5 minutes there's a song.
- 18:09Yep, there's a song or some kind of vamp going on in the
- 18:12background. There's it's they, it's like
- 18:16it's an hour and 30 minutes and they just like packed it.
- 18:21Dude, well, it, it never feels like it overstays it's welcome
- 18:24either because just like I said, how good it is and like I, I
- 18:29personally liked every song. I've loved every song in this
- 18:32movie. I I love, love, love cannibal
- 18:39the musical and I just, I brought it up during the the
- 18:44watch and I was like, dude, I just really wish like I know
- 18:47they got the Book of Mormon, but I really wish like they would
- 18:50produce and take this on the road.
- 18:52Yeah, so, But there are, like, groups who did, like, perform
- 18:58this live, Yeah. Or, you know, like small
- 19:00renditions of this. But it was never anything
- 19:03official. Could you have the only thing,
- 19:05the only recent thing we have of this is Trey singing one of the
- 19:09songs at the anniversary concert.
- 19:12Yeah, the Red Rocks. They need to do like, you know
- 19:16how like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- 19:17People will go to the the viewings, dressed up and
- 19:20participate on stage. Yeah, this would be a perfect
- 19:23movie for something like that. It.
- 19:24Would be if we rented a theatre and like did an event for
- 19:29cannibal. I guarantee we get.
- 19:32I think trauma now because of like the South Park thing.
- 19:36I think everybody, like a lot of people, know about it.
- 19:40You'd you'd have to dress up. You would, but should we talk
- 19:45about Leanne for a second? Yes, bring up Leanne.
- 19:49So Leanne the name of Alfred Packer's disloyal host or host
- 19:54horse I can't talk tonight that the horse is based on his ex
- 19:59fiance who they were going to get married and he found out
- 20:02that she was having an affair and then that was shortly before
- 20:06making this. He was dating the woman who
- 20:09played Polly Pry while they were making this, but he gave the
- 20:14name Leanne to the horse and this is a quote from him.
- 20:17He gave the name to the horse who would let anyone ride her.
- 20:21Brutal, Yes. It's hilarious like it writes
- 20:28itself, dude. So yeah, it's and you can, you
- 20:32can. There's a leg of lines alluding
- 20:35to it throughout the movie, Like when when Leanne leaves, he's
- 20:39like, yeah, when Leanne runs off, he's like, no, she would
- 20:43never run away on me or she would never let anyone else ride
- 20:47her but me. Like everyone in this town has
- 20:51ridden your horse. Yeah, yeah, exactly like a
- 20:54trapper Frenchie. You know, like shit.
- 20:58I wonder how stupid she feels now.
- 21:00Oh dude, I wonder if she saw it. I I bet she's seen it and she's
- 21:05definitely. Oh no, there's no way she didn't
- 21:07see it. Yeah, he probably sent her a
- 21:09copy in the mail. Especially now.
- 21:13Yeah. Given like his status, you know,
- 21:16it's like golly. And that is like, I mean, I
- 21:20wonder how he feels about it now.
- 21:21Like if he looks back on that and still thinks it's funny
- 21:24because I think it's hilarious. Oh.
- 21:26It's it's that's amazing, but that's also college.
- 21:28It's. It's true.
- 21:30It's a whole new level of pettiness, which I'm here for
- 21:33it, He. Made a movie about her I.
- 21:35Mean Mark Zuckerberg made made Facebook?
- 21:37Well, he was filled with college angst.
- 21:41Yeah, now he's. Like a robot Facebook and
- 21:44Cannibal the musical. I think, you know, they even
- 21:46out. Two types, two different types
- 21:49of people here. One's a sociopath.
- 21:51And one's a really silly guy. You know.
- 21:53Yeah. Oh man.
- 21:56But in terms of things come coming from college angst, this
- 22:00is what happens when you do have a creative outlet.
- 22:03Yes, and you're not making a website, just a fuck yeah.
- 22:06Yeah, but Alex is like, what? EW, I know.
- 22:13EW, what? No.
- 22:16Lizard person no fucking the. Lizard person book.
- 22:20Oh, Mark Zuckerberg. Yeah, he's gross.
- 22:22Yeah. So this is it says in the movie.
- 22:27This is based off a true story and it is very close to that
- 22:30true story. OK, how close is it to the true
- 22:33story? It's pretty close.
- 22:35So the basic, the TLDR of the story is Alfred Packer is a guy
- 22:43and he's just kind of like making his way through the
- 22:46world. He's not very talented or good
- 22:49at anything. He, he kind of like bounced
- 22:53around a little bit in the in Colorado, not not really ever to
- 22:58hold down any kind of job. He tried mining in Colorado, but
- 23:03that didn't really work out. So you moved to Utah where he
- 23:06met 20 men who were getting ready to travel back to Colorado
- 23:11where he had just come from. In the movie, it's five men who
- 23:18are looking to go and nobody else wants to go.
- 23:19But in real life, it was 20. And in real life, the trappers
- 23:25were part of that group. They weren't trappers in real
- 23:28life, but they were just, you know, every, everybody is like a
- 23:30hunter and everybody is a prospector and everybody's this
- 23:33and that. Alfred Packer was very like
- 23:37arrogant and full of himself and he thought he was hot shit.
- 23:41So he told these 20 guys that he was like, hey, I'm a guy and I
- 23:44can lead you back to Colorado. And in the movie, he's very
- 23:47reluctant to do it, which is like more if he was honest.
- 23:52But in real life, he was like pretty arrogant about it.
- 23:55And despite his like, lack of skill, he he got he did get them
- 24:01a good ways into the mountains before they got lost.
- 24:03But they did lose their horses and wagons on the way because
- 24:06the terrain was just too rough. They did go to the Ute Native
- 24:15American camp. There was a friendly Native
- 24:18American chief there. He was not a Japanese though
- 24:22like in the movie. And that guy, he was known to be
- 24:28like friendly to to white men. And he let them rest.
- 24:32He gave them food. But from there the party like
- 24:35fractures and the six people, including Packer and his party
- 24:40went off one way and then the other group including Frenchy,
- 24:46Cabazon, Oliver Lautsenhizer and the other guys something Nutter.
- 24:53They they went off a different route.
- 24:57These are real people. Those three were real guys and
- 25:00Frenchy's going to be important. Specifically, Frenchy and
- 25:03Lautsenhizer are going to be important because they split off
- 25:07and then there's no contact with anybody until 65 days after they
- 25:12split up. Packer was seen walking by
- 25:14himself on a frozen lake bed near Saw Watch.
- 25:19So he gets into town, he's all sick and he's like barely able
- 25:25to eat and drink and stuff. And they're like, Oh my God,
- 25:27what happened? He's telling the stories of what
- 25:29happened. The way he put it, like
- 25:32everybody went crazy and like tried to kill him and he had to
- 25:35kill them in self-defense. He did.
- 25:38He admitted that they had Eaton Swan because he was like, he had
- 25:45died during the journey and they admitted that they that they'd
- 25:48eaten him. People like cannibalism was kind
- 25:53of known at that point because the Donner Party thing had
- 25:56happened. It was sort of a known reality
- 26:00of travel like this that sometimes it would come down to
- 26:03that. So that wasn't really the
- 26:05problem they had. The problem that they had was
- 26:08that they think he murdered his his traveller, his travelling
- 26:16party and taking their stuff because he was seen spending
- 26:20tons of money in town using multiple different wallets.
- 26:25So eventually Frenchie, Lautzenheiser and Nutter show up
- 26:32and they're like no way dude like this.
- 26:35There's no shot that he's telling the truth.
- 26:37Like this is all really SUS. So they they took that
- 26:40information. They said, yeah, they're like,
- 26:42there's no, there's no fucking way.
- 26:44So they went to the sheriff with it, and the sheriff was like,
- 26:46OK, that's enough evidence. So they arrested Packer and they
- 26:50put him in jail. And then they so they plan to go
- 26:54out and look for the corpses. And when they found them, they
- 26:59were all together in one spot, just like in the movie where
- 27:01they all die in the same place. Yeah, after I think Bell kills
- 27:06them all. So that that part, it's pretty,
- 27:11it's pretty accurate. I would have to say this little
- 27:13things like the, you know, the trappers were probably not
- 27:18actually just trappers, but they did.
- 27:21When they split off at the Ute camp, there was like an
- 27:24altercation and one of them threatened Packer that if they
- 27:27followed him they would kill him.
- 27:30This Packer could just not get shit right, dude.
- 27:33Yeah. So by the time the authorities
- 27:38went out to look for the bodies and they found it, by the time
- 27:40they got back, Packer was gone. Somebody had slipped him a key
- 27:44to his shackles and he escaped that way.
- 27:47They didn't even have a jail in the town, so they were holding
- 27:50him basically just locked in a cabin with the shackles in on
- 27:54his wrists and his ankles so he couldn't run away.
- 27:58So by the time they get back, he was gone.
- 28:00He had escaped to Wyoming, like he mentions in the movie, which
- 28:03is probably the funniest joke in the movie.
- 28:09Yeah. And he was.
- 28:10So he he went to Wyoming and he was living under a cover name.
- 28:13And then somehow he didn't recognize Frenchie because he
- 28:16approached him to buy some supplies.
- 28:19And Frenchie recognized him and turned him into the local
- 28:22police. And from there, a sheriff took
- 28:25him back to Denver to stand trial.
- 28:29And during his trial, they, they convicted him of murder.
- 28:35The cannibalism, like I said, it wasn't really that big a deal to
- 28:38the judge because it was sort of a known thing that can happen.
- 28:42They, they said that he just killed him, killed all the men
- 28:45to steal their stuff. So he managed to avoid the death
- 28:53penalty on a technicality that he was basically able to
- 28:57convince enough people that he didn't have a choice but to kill
- 29:00them because they were going to kill him, which is all like he
- 29:03said, she said there's no way to prove it.
- 29:07So he avoided execution. He only served 18 out of his 40
- 29:12year jail sentence. And he was released on parole
- 29:15because Polly Pry from the movie had gotten the idea that he was
- 29:22being unfairly punished for this thing that he just had to do
- 29:26because there was no other choice.
- 29:30And he and a long time friend of Packard were able to convince
- 29:34the public through like articles and stories that it was unfair.
- 29:40And then so he was released and he he always viewed her as being
- 29:45his like savior because she basically got him out of jail.
- 29:50Dude, that's ridiculous and. From from there he kind of just
- 29:55like he worked little odd jobs and then he retired.
- 29:59He died in 19 O 7 at the age of 65.
- 30:03They cited the causes dementia, trouble and worry, which is
- 30:07basically old time in medical talk for he had a stroke before
- 30:12he died. He he was known to be very
- 30:14modest and very charitable and he lived as a vegetarian.
- 30:21All right, so the man noticed a cannibal.
- 30:23He went, he went vegan at the end there he said no more meat
- 30:27for this guy, you. Know what?
- 30:28I've had my fair share. But you know what?
- 30:30If I had to eat a person, I'd probably also go vegetarian
- 30:33after. Well, like eating human, doesn't
- 30:37it like make you actually go crazy?
- 30:39Turns you into an indigo or something, yeah.
- 30:41I thought, I thought there was like the something in the meat
- 30:44in the ends. I don't.
- 30:45I'm not a goddamn scientist. It definitely.
- 30:47I mean it has a psychological effect like if you.
- 30:50Oh yeah, dude you eat a dude you.
- 30:52Know, yeah, if you look at like stuff from the Donner Party or
- 30:56if you ever watched the Terror, yeah, or that the one about the
- 31:01the fucking soccer team that crashed in the mountains.
- 31:05Oh yeah, the rugby. Fuck yeah.
- 31:07The rugby. The rugby team.
- 31:08Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, yeah, I mean, that's like,
- 31:13that's the real Alfred Packer's story.
- 31:16If you look up a picture of Alfred Packer, it's crazy how
- 31:18much he looks like a young Trey Parker.
- 31:20He does. It's ridiculous.
- 31:21It's like it's honestly a little bit insane.
- 31:25After he died, they did continue to investigate this.
- 31:31They part of that investigation did include exhuming Packer and
- 31:36the other men's remains, which resulted in parts of his
- 31:41skeleton, namely his skull, going missing.
- 31:45And so we got another stop on the on the IT came from screen
- 31:50box field trip right after we find the frogman in Loveland,
- 31:53OH. But the skull.
- 31:55As of 2008, the skull is reported to be at the Ripley's
- 31:59Museum in San Antonio, TX. Are you serious?
- 32:04Yeah. And there are.
- 32:05There are many there are rumors that it's fake or that it's just
- 32:09some random skull, but that is, you know them, them's be the
- 32:14rumors. That's what we got.
- 32:17So the most recent, the most recent investigation into the
- 32:21thing happened somewhat recently.
- 32:23It was 115 years after this incident, but people were still
- 32:28investigating it and they still don't fully know what happened.
- 32:31But what what the common theory is is that Packer just killed
- 32:37them all in their sleep and lived off their corpses for a
- 32:40while. Because when?
- 32:44Bad guy. Yeah, So, you know, maybe he
- 32:47didn't. He felt he didn't have a choice.
- 32:49Maybe they did go snow blind and they went crazy.
- 32:52Who can say? But we got a pretty good movie
- 32:57out of it. Thank you, Alfred.
- 32:59Thank you, Mr. Packard. We appreciate that.
- 33:04Fantastic. Stuff.
- 33:06Fantastic. Did you have any more?
- 33:09Nope, that's all of it. Oh my God.
- 33:12A lot of fun stuff. Yeah, that was fun, that.
- 33:15Was a good history lesson. Great movie.
- 33:17Five out of five. Well, I think it's like it's a
- 33:19it's a silly movie, but it's also like it's a crazy story.
- 33:22Like that's that is just like a little piece of the story.
- 33:26There's people go like the official stuff goes pretty deep
- 33:30on like how exactly? Like beat for beat, how do they
- 33:33think it went down? That's cool.
- 33:36I fuck with that heavy. I like that.
- 33:40Yes. Mr. Alex, what's your rating?
- 33:42Five out of five. Yeah, it's five out of five,
- 33:48Yeah. It's another perfect go watch
- 33:49it. It's another perfect score on.
- 33:52I think sometimes people are going to be like, well, these
- 33:53guys are too lenient. But like for certain movies,
- 33:55like it's just a perfect movie. The writing is just like, do I
- 33:59enjoy ones? Yeah, we've given ones.
- 34:02Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're. Doing looking at you cocaine
- 34:06crabs. Hey, but we we did have fun
- 34:09with. You.

- 34:14know, there's a lot of good stuff being added to screen box

- 34:22I think there's more coming. Yeah, they put a a a big amount
- 34:26of tromba movies, all the classics.
- 34:29I'm kind of surprised this one was on there, but I'm not
- 34:32surprised after learning that they see it as the like one of
- 34:36their best offerings. But Amen, really good.

- 34:43It's a it's an easy foot in the trauma because it's not.
