- 0:14Speaker 1: Live from Patriots Training Camp.
- 0:16Speaker 3: This is Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota dot Com. Goody,
- 0:26Speaker 3: good morning, and welcome to Patriots Training Camp special Patriots
- 0:31Speaker 3: Unfiltered edition. We are high above the practice field here
- 0:35Speaker 3: at Jillette Stadium, getting ready for the joint practice with
- 0:39Speaker 3: the Indianapolis Colts. It's Paul Pirello, myself, Fred Kersh, my Dussau,
- 0:43Speaker 3: Evan Lazarre, and we're happy to have you with us
- 0:47Speaker 3: for this today. It's a beautiful day out, a little
- 0:50Speaker 3: bit of breeze, which is most welcome. It's been really
- 0:53Speaker 3: hot here in New England lately, but it's just a
- 0:56Speaker 3: glorious day for football.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Glorious day. I think everybody was looking forward to this.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Talking to the players over the last few practices, I
- 1:02Speaker 4: think they're already to hit somebody else, to see some
- 1:05Speaker 4: different schemes. And I don't know, have I think you
- 1:07Speaker 4: summed it up well last week where you're like it
- 1:09Speaker 4: feels like it's getting a little stale. Maybe they're kind
- 1:11Speaker 4: of getting used to seeing the same plays over and
- 1:13Speaker 4: over again.
- 1:14Speaker 1: These are always a highlight of.
- 1:15Speaker 4: The summer and it should be a really good one today.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Yeah, and with the way that the NFL as a
- 1:19Speaker 5: whole treats preseason games now for the starting frontline players,
- 1:23Speaker 5: we just heard from Mike Rabel that Drake May is
- 1:25Speaker 5: probably not gonna play on Thursday night.
- 1:27Speaker 6: This is the preseason now. These are practices.
- 1:30Speaker 5: Are where that starters Drake May, aj Brown, Christian Gonzalez,
- 1:34Speaker 5: That's where they get their work in is during these
- 1:37Speaker 5: joint practices.
- 1:38Speaker 6: So this is the this is the litmus.
- 1:40Speaker 5: This is a barometer now against the team last year
- 1:42Speaker 5: that was on its way to the playoffs until Daniel
- 1:45Speaker 5: Jones got hurt.
- 1:46Speaker 6: It's a talented team.
- 1:47Speaker 5: They got some stars on that side as well, So
- 1:49Speaker 5: it's gonna be exciting.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You mentioned this is preseason now, and it's going to
- 1:53Speaker 2: be increasingly so because eventually the league's gonna go to
- 1:57Speaker 2: eighteen games. That means they're gonna knock down on one
- 2:00Speaker 2: of the preseason games down to so it'll be two.
- 2:03Speaker 2: So these joint practices are going to be more and
- 2:05Speaker 2: more important, even more than they are now. You know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: it'll be common to see teams with two joint practices
- 2:13Speaker 2: at minimum during training camp.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So this is it.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Like Vrabel said, you're gonna get about twenty four offensive snaps,
- 2:22Speaker 2: so they've already got it all mapped out, which he
- 2:24Speaker 2: says is.
- 2:25Speaker 1: More than a game. I thought that was a little
- 2:27Speaker 1: bit strange.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Well for the for the ones and then no for
- 2:30Speaker 4: the ones, Okay, gotcha, Okay, it would be a little
- 2:33Speaker 4: bit more. But yeah, I mean this is you know,
- 2:35Speaker 4: the trend. We've been watching plenty of joint practices here,
- 2:37Speaker 4: we were in Minnesota last year. You know, always really competitive.
- 2:41Speaker 4: I mean, I just I always enjoyed the final two minute.
- 2:43Speaker 4: I mean that's the you know, the last segment that
- 2:45Speaker 4: they do. The two teams, you know, go against each other,
- 2:47Speaker 4: try to put some points on the board. So you know,
- 2:50Speaker 4: there's of course Robert Spileine out here. I'm sure he's
- 2:52Speaker 4: fired up today to get some stick marks, stick his
- 2:55Speaker 4: helmet into some of these cults players.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, for anyone who's new to joint practice,
- 3:00Speaker 2: is it's not one hundred percent tackling. It's pretty much
- 3:05Speaker 2: i'd say maybe eighty percent speed. And you know, guys
- 3:09Speaker 2: aren't for the most part, going to the ground.
- 3:11Speaker 1: There's some thutting going on.
- 3:13Speaker 2: There's some you know, pushing and shoving and kind of
- 3:17Speaker 2: heavy hits, especially along the line of scrimmage, but guys
- 3:21Speaker 2: aren't tackling, and sometimes when one.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Guy goes a little bit harder than another, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 1: it's get a little heated. We've seen some fights here,
- 3:32Speaker 1: you know.
- 3:32Speaker 4: I also think something I recognized last year was in Minnesota.
- 3:37Speaker 4: You felt like Minnesota's defense was all over Drake, which
- 3:40Speaker 4: you know they were, but I think there were also
- 3:41Speaker 4: plays that Drake said, people forget how mobile I am.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Not every single one of those was going to be
- 3:46Speaker 4: a sack. So I think it's important not to, you know, overreact.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Remember that it isn't live. The quarterback can sneak out
- 3:53Speaker 4: sometimes and it's in a real situation, so you know,
- 3:55Speaker 4: some of this stuff it's going to get blown up
- 3:57Speaker 4: and all. They had twelve sacks or you know, those
- 3:59Speaker 4: kind of things, even for the defense, But like you said, Fred,
- 4:02Speaker 4: it's not live, and you have to take everything a
- 4:04Speaker 4: little bit of a grain of salt.
- 4:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I hope they don't have twelve sacks.
- 4:10Speaker 4: That would probably be bad regardless yeah.
- 4:12Speaker 1: We uh.
- 4:12Speaker 2: In the last Patriots Unfiltered newsletter, we talked about the
- 4:16Speaker 2: matchups that we're looking forward to watching during this practice.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Let's go over let's go over that again. Evan. We'll
- 4:24Speaker 1: start with you.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah, has anything changed since you wrote wrote you wrote
- 4:29Speaker 2: up in the newsletter?
- 4:30Speaker 6: No, I said late to a lot to you versus
- 4:32Speaker 6: Will Campbell.
- 4:32Speaker 5: I'll stick with that as their best pass rusher on
- 4:34Speaker 5: the edge and a player last year at over sixty pressures,
- 4:38Speaker 5: double digit sacks. Pretty good player. Not necessarily a household
- 4:41Speaker 5: name yet, but it was a first round pick a
- 4:43Speaker 5: couple of years ago. I would just say big picture
- 4:46Speaker 5: offense in general. I think the offense for the Patriots
- 4:48Speaker 5: has been okay in training camp, but I don't think
- 4:50Speaker 5: that they've consistently hit their ceiling yet. A lot of
- 4:54Speaker 5: new faces, AJ Brown, Romeo Dobbs catching passes from Drake
- 4:58Speaker 5: May for the first time. So you'd like to see
- 5:00Speaker 5: the offense in one of these three joint practices. You'd
- 5:03Speaker 5: like to see MVP Drake May. You know, you like
- 5:06Speaker 5: to see him go out there and really tear it
- 5:08Speaker 5: up into practice. So hopefully it's today, if not next
- 5:11Speaker 5: week against the Eagles, but I don't think we've necessarily
- 5:14Speaker 5: seen this offense consistently firing on all cylinders yet.
- 5:18Speaker 4: I think I missed the one day that that it
- 5:19Speaker 4: was probably closest to the second day past.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, yeah, that that Friday was probably the
- 5:24Speaker 5: closest thing to it. He definitely was good that day,
- 5:27Speaker 5: And I'm not saying he hasn't been good, but I
- 5:30Speaker 5: just think that there's been some growing pains with those receivers,
- 5:33Speaker 5: in particular, breaking those guys in and Vera Tucker on
- 5:36Speaker 5: the offensive line on the left side, and different faces
- 5:40Speaker 5: in what they had last year in different spots. So
- 5:43Speaker 5: you would just like to see that start to come together.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Yeah, for me, I'm gonna go not surprisingly with the
- 5:48Speaker 4: edge players here for the Patriots.
- 5:50Speaker 1: You know, Draymont Jones I think has been fine.
- 5:52Speaker 4: You know, I think he's one of those guys that
- 5:54Speaker 4: will show up doing everything when when the season comes around.
- 5:57Speaker 4: But you know, how does Elijah Ponder look in some
- 6:00Speaker 4: of these drills? How does Gay Bachus look? Is he
- 6:03Speaker 4: you know, finally unleashed here as he's worked his way
- 6:05Speaker 4: back into you know, full play time, we've seen him
- 6:08Speaker 4: get rising reps. So those guys you know, just how
- 6:10Speaker 4: of they hold up. I mean, Indy's got a pretty
- 6:12Speaker 4: good offensive line. You know, you never know quite how
- 6:15Speaker 4: the matchups are going to work out. But you know,
- 6:17Speaker 4: Raymond's pretty good left tackle for them, So how to
- 6:19Speaker 4: out of those guys match up. It's still just such
- 6:21Speaker 4: a key position to me if they're going to be
- 6:23Speaker 4: able to generate consistent pressure off the edges with this group.
- 6:26Speaker 4: And you know we heard about Harold Landry two. He's
- 6:28Speaker 4: still working his way back. He's another part of this
- 6:30Speaker 4: group eventually, but these three guys behind him are going
- 6:33Speaker 4: to have to really hold the fort. I'd almost put
- 6:35Speaker 4: Brayden Swinson in that mix too, But those three guys
- 6:38Speaker 4: love to see something out of them today, winning their
- 6:40Speaker 4: matchups off the.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Edge, how about you, Paul?
- 6:42Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, unfortunately Mian already got blown up because
- 6:44Speaker 7: I don't think we're going to see Alec Pierce today.
- 6:47Speaker 7: He's not feeling with some injuries there in Indie. Because
- 6:50Speaker 7: I really have been impressed with the Patriots secondary during
- 6:53Speaker 7: these training camp practices, obviously led by Christian Gonzalez. I
- 6:57Speaker 7: wanted to see a different kind of challenge, you know,
- 7:00Speaker 7: a taller speed threat, true speed threat down the field.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Not going to see that, So.
- 7:06Speaker 7: I guess I'll focus a little bit more just on
- 7:08Speaker 7: the Patriots offensive line in general and see how it
- 7:12Speaker 7: looks against another team. You know, I don't know who's
- 7:14Speaker 7: going to be upfront, you know, if top to bottom
- 7:17Speaker 7: for the Colts, but their NFL players, it's a good
- 7:20Speaker 7: team that was off to a really good start until
- 7:23Speaker 7: they had unfortunate injuries last year. It's tough because I
- 7:27Speaker 7: think their offense is so predicated on Jonathan Taylor and
- 7:30Speaker 7: I don't think that gets accentuated in a joint practice.
- 7:33Speaker 7: You know, there's no real simulation for that, and I
- 7:36Speaker 7: think so much of what they do depends on how
- 7:38Speaker 7: he goes. But I do think you can see how
- 7:41Speaker 7: the Patriots offensive line performance. We've seen some of these
- 7:44Speaker 7: joint practices before. Some of them haven't always gone well,
- 7:47Speaker 7: and you can see, even though they're not live, you
- 7:49Speaker 7: can tell. So I'm hoping that there's a better showing today.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sorry to cut you off.
- 7:53Speaker 4: I just i'd highlight Jared Wilson and the interior, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 4: going against Grover Stewart to Forrest Buckner, two of their
- 7:59Speaker 4: top line guys. That's something I think we got to
- 8:02Speaker 4: keep it one with Jared Wilson moving to center, handling
- 8:05Speaker 4: the big guys inside, that's something that you know, we
- 8:07Speaker 4: saw a little bit when he was playing left guard
- 8:09Speaker 4: last year of you know, some of the power guys
- 8:11Speaker 4: could kind of get into him and get him pushing back.
- 8:15Speaker 1: We think he's better at center.
- 8:16Speaker 4: That's what we've been told, that's what is his natural
- 8:18Speaker 4: position is is that going to translate to the field
- 8:21Speaker 4: and really, you know, solidify this.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Whole new look offensive line.
- 8:24Speaker 4: So that's that's another spot I'll be watching, especially you know,
- 8:27Speaker 4: Elijah vera tucker for great things about him. Let's see
- 8:30Speaker 4: how he does against some of these bigger body players inside.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I and you know I wrote and you know
- 8:35Speaker 2: I'll stand by I'm looking at both sides of the line.
- 8:39Speaker 2: How how do the how does the offensive line handle
- 8:42Speaker 2: the Colts pressure when they send it? I think if
- 8:45Speaker 2: there are problems on the offensive line.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You'll see it today. Yeah, you'll see it today.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And and if there's not, you'll see a smooth, smooth
- 8:55Speaker 2: execution up front.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Uh.
- 8:57Speaker 1: And then of course can we get pressure on the Colts?
- 9:00Speaker 1: How is that working out?
- 9:03Speaker 2: And you know I'm like you guys, I'm excited to
- 9:07Speaker 2: see Gabe Achis, to see how he's doing out there.
- 9:10Speaker 2: No Christian Barmore today, as we as we found out
- 9:15Speaker 2: something happened last week with him and we haven't seen
- 9:18Speaker 2: him on the field since.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I don't know what it is.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I don't know if it's related, you know, to the
- 9:24Speaker 2: blood clot issue that he had before, or if it's
- 9:26Speaker 2: a you know, some type of injury that he sustained.
- 9:31Speaker 2: But there was a moment in practice last week where
- 9:33Speaker 2: he fired his helmet and walked off the field, so
- 9:36Speaker 2: he was upset about something.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, well it sounds like he's gonna be individual
- 9:39Speaker 4: drills at least, so that you know, positive sign it
- 9:41Speaker 4: is not something that's going to keep him out of
- 9:43Speaker 4: the mix. I mean, kind of the funny injury thing
- 9:45Speaker 4: to keep an eye on his his Julian Nashby was
- 9:47Speaker 4: out yesterday suddenly.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Never really seen that happen before the ankle.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Injury brought back Nico Lalos.
- 9:54Speaker 1: You know you have a that's.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Why you got those long snappers on on speed dial.
- 9:57Speaker 4: But yeah, just cantinuing to watch all those guys today.
- 10:01Speaker 4: It should be you know, just going back to sorry, Paul,
- 10:03Speaker 4: real quick. With the Alec Pierce thing, I think that's
- 10:05Speaker 4: a big thing for me is like A J. Brown
- 10:07Speaker 4: hasn't really been deep on Christian Gonzales and even in
- 10:10Speaker 4: the micd up you heard him and Drake kind of
- 10:11Speaker 4: talking about it.
- 10:13Speaker 1: That's Alec Pierce's game.
- 10:14Speaker 4: That would have been a really interesting matchup to watch
- 10:16Speaker 4: if if Gonzalez was able to, you know, keep the
- 10:18Speaker 4: clamps on him over the top, that would really put
- 10:20Speaker 4: a hamper in.
- 10:21Speaker 1: So who is the Cold's best cornerback right now?
- 10:24Speaker 2: Well, of course Various war is a good player and
- 10:27Speaker 2: he's one hundred percent, so you know that'll be a
- 10:30Speaker 2: good I'm assuming they'll put him on a J.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Brown, but you know we'll see that in Yes, he
- 10:35Speaker 1: expected to practice.
- 10:36Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 10:38Speaker 5: I mean, look, you go up and down to Colts roster.
- 10:40Speaker 5: They they've got some star players, you know, DeForest Buckner,
- 10:44Speaker 5: Jonathan Taylor, Tyler Warren at tight end obviously saw us
- 10:47Speaker 5: as a star player. So they they've got some household
- 10:51Speaker 5: names on both sides of the ball.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Indie Nopp, I mean, we it's easy to forget because
- 10:56Speaker 2: the Colts kind of fell off after Daniel Jones got
- 10:58Speaker 2: hurt and all.
- 10:59Speaker 1: That eating too.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Yeah, they were the number one seed in the AFC
- 11:03Speaker 2: for a while.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And I don't think that was a fluke.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I Like you said, I think they've got some real
- 11:08Speaker 2: good talent on this team. Like Paul said, a lot
- 11:12Speaker 2: of it is run based. Jonathan Taylor is probably their
- 11:14Speaker 2: most valuable player on offense.
- 11:17Speaker 1: But you know, Daniel Jones is okay, he can Well, we'll.
- 11:21Speaker 6: See about that.
- 11:21Speaker 5: I mean, I think that if we're gonna say, is
- 11:23Speaker 5: it wasn't a fluke, it's gonna be was Daniel Jones's
- 11:26Speaker 5: ten game sample size a fluke or not. But Shane Stike,
- 11:29Speaker 5: in their head coach, is one of the best play
- 11:31Speaker 5: callers in football, does a really good job, really quarterback friendly.
- 11:36Speaker 5: They run a similar system to what the Eagles do.
- 11:38Speaker 5: So there's gonna be a lot of RPOs. There's gonna
- 11:40Speaker 5: be a lot of quarterback movement in the backfield, moving pockets,
- 11:44Speaker 5: things like that. And they did that a lot with
- 11:46Speaker 5: Daniel Jones last year off that run game, and it
- 11:49Speaker 5: really kind of simplifies it for the quarterback. You know,
- 11:51Speaker 5: it's a lot of one red throws, a lot of
- 11:53Speaker 5: half field reads on the boots you know, so there's
- 11:56Speaker 5: not as much drop back progression passing on. Daniel Jones
- 12:00Speaker 5: has played as maybe there is another offenses and he
- 12:03Speaker 5: excelled in it. You know, he was able to use
- 12:05Speaker 5: his athleticism, his arm, you know, and really excel in it.
- 12:08Speaker 2: So as you can see, the Colts will be in white,
- 12:11Speaker 2: the Patriots will be in blue today. So I know
- 12:15Speaker 2: that when the Patriots are among themselves, it's white blue offense,
- 12:20Speaker 2: white defense blue. But here you've got all the Colts
- 12:23Speaker 2: in white, all the Patriots in blue.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 4: The you know, going back to last year's joint practices,
- 12:28Speaker 4: one of the themes that we saw a lot with
- 12:29Speaker 4: this defense that we thought they had trouble with were
- 12:32Speaker 4: screen passes and tight ends, and you know, I think
- 12:35Speaker 4: those are two things that the Colts do very well,
- 12:37Speaker 4: certainly with Tyler Warren. That's that's a big piece I'm
- 12:40Speaker 4: going to keep an eye on today of you know,
- 12:42Speaker 4: I almost thought last year that it's maybe a weakness
- 12:46Speaker 4: in this defense where they're so aggressive that at times,
- 12:49Speaker 4: you know, they will get their aggressiveness used against them
- 12:52Speaker 4: when with screen passes and those kind of things. You know,
- 12:56Speaker 4: Brabol kind of says, you just got to put your
- 12:57Speaker 4: foot in the dirt and go get the ball as
- 12:59Speaker 4: soon as you recognize it. But those are two spots,
- 13:02Speaker 4: especially going back to the Minnesota practices last year that
- 13:05Speaker 4: you know, and I think even carried over av into
- 13:06Speaker 4: the regular season a little bit.
- 13:08Speaker 1: With the tight end stuff.
- 13:09Speaker 6: The tight ends is definitely true.
- 13:11Speaker 5: You know, I don't know how much running back screen
- 13:13Speaker 5: they'll see from the Colts or like a perimeter bubble
- 13:16Speaker 5: screen type of team. But in terms of the tight end,
- 13:20Speaker 5: obviously there's Warren's one of the best, if not the best,
- 13:23Speaker 5: in the NFL soon sooner rather than later. So he's
- 13:26Speaker 5: a problem. And how are they going to cover tight ends?
- 13:29Speaker 5: And it's not exactly as cut and dry as like
- 13:32Speaker 5: a Belichick defense or you knew you had one guy
- 13:35Speaker 5: like a chunk that was going to be on the
- 13:36Speaker 5: tight end all the time. This defense kind of does
- 13:39Speaker 5: it more by committee. You know, sometimes even the linebackers
- 13:42Speaker 5: get caught in coverage on tight ends. So those those
- 13:45Speaker 5: are things that they're gonna see. They're gonna see, you know,
- 13:48Speaker 5: a J. Barner out of the gate. They're gonna see
- 13:50Speaker 5: Dalton Kincaid. They're gonna see tight ends that can make
- 13:53Speaker 5: plays in the passing game, just like Tyler Warren.
- 13:56Speaker 2: So as far as our coverage today, we're allowed to
- 13:58Speaker 2: be live through five, which from what I understand, will
- 14:04Speaker 2: be a team drill, So you'll see a little Patriots
- 14:07Speaker 2: versus Colts in that period and then we will shut off,
- 14:11Speaker 2: but the rest of the practice will be covered afterwards.
- 14:14Speaker 2: We'll do the camp cast afterwards, so you'll get everybody's
- 14:18Speaker 2: opinions on what happened after period five on that on
- 14:22Speaker 2: Patriots dot Com and Patriots Social.
- 14:25Speaker 1: So it's a big day here.
- 14:27Speaker 2: We're two days away from the first preseason game on Thursday.
- 14:31Speaker 2: It's hard to believe, but here we are. Summer is
- 14:36Speaker 2: officially over.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Yeah, we're in the preseason. But the joint practice preseason
- 14:40Speaker 4: part those first couple weeks.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Of training camp.
- 14:42Speaker 4: I feel like those you know, they're fun and it's
- 14:44Speaker 4: exciting to get back out here and watch a little football,
- 14:46Speaker 4: but you quickly turn the page to wanting to see,
- 14:49Speaker 4: you know, these joint practices, which to me is the
- 14:51Speaker 4: highlight of the summer, getting to watch these control atmospheres,
- 14:55Speaker 4: the good against good. You know, I know it'll be
- 14:57Speaker 4: a little bit of a slog when we get into
- 14:58Speaker 4: the fourth quarter on Thursday night.
- 15:00Speaker 1: With some of the backups.
- 15:01Speaker 4: But this here, today, there's not a moment that that's boring,
- 15:04Speaker 4: and you know, really looks like there's a you know,
- 15:06Speaker 4: good crowd already turning in away.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Drake May May out in the field, and as Rabel
- 15:15Speaker 2: revealed in his press conference, he he most likely will
- 15:19Speaker 2: not play in the preseason game, so this is an
- 15:22Speaker 2: important practice for him in the offense.
- 15:24Speaker 1: It is.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I like what Evan said, you know,
- 15:26Speaker 4: be nice to kind of I mean that's what I
- 15:29Speaker 4: came out of when I missed that practice. It was like, wow,
- 15:31Speaker 4: it feels like today Drake May reminded everybody that he
- 15:34Speaker 4: was an MVP runner up last year, and you know, hey,
- 15:36Speaker 4: look this is a joint practice.
- 15:37Speaker 1: This isn't the super Bowl or anything like that.
- 15:39Speaker 4: But it'd be nice to see him have a good day,
- 15:41Speaker 4: have a kind of day that you know they can
- 15:43Speaker 4: build off of. They can build some confidence, especially with
- 15:46Speaker 4: Romeo Dobbs, who you know has really been coming on
- 15:48Speaker 4: the last couple of practices. Can they keep that momentum
- 15:50Speaker 4: going here, you know against another team to good to see?
- 15:53Speaker 1: Yeah, if you want to write in you can do that.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Podcast at Patriots dot com is the way to email
- 15:59Speaker 2: us during the show. We'll get to those in a
- 16:02Speaker 2: little bit, but we are sponsored by Toyota dot com.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Up your game by going to Toyota dot com to
- 16:08Speaker 2: see the best selection of hybrid all wheel drive in
- 16:12Speaker 2: four wheel drive vehicles of any brand. Toyota is the
- 16:15Speaker 2: official vehicle of the New England Patriots.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Toyota. Let's go to joint practice. We're here, We're here,
- 16:23Speaker 1: We're here.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Yeah, we've got here in our Toyotas. So all right,
- 16:30Speaker 2: see a little uh backup quarterback action.
- 16:34Speaker 6: Tommy Tommy cutlet's Tommy too.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Has been good, Yeah, he's been good.
- 16:38Speaker 4: I mean just you know, universal kind of talking to
- 16:40Speaker 4: anybody down there that you know, all the beat writers,
- 16:42Speaker 4: everybody that's been covering this practice has you know, been
- 16:45Speaker 4: pretty impressed with the job that Tommy DeVito's done here
- 16:47Speaker 4: in his second year with the team, which I mean
- 16:50Speaker 4: it was I still remember so crystal clear last year
- 16:52Speaker 4: in that final preseason game against the Giants and being like,
- 16:54Speaker 4: she's Tommy DeVito's carving us up a little bit here,
- 16:57Speaker 4: and they went out and grabbed him and then season
- 17:00Speaker 4: made him, made him the backup.
- 17:01Speaker 1: So yeah, he's made the most of this opportunity for him.
- 17:04Speaker 1: He's got a live arm. Evan said, he can drive
- 17:07Speaker 1: the ball. He can drive it.
- 17:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, you know, I I think he's done
- 17:11Speaker 5: a pretty good job, even going all the way back
- 17:13Speaker 5: to the spring, just some of the throws that he's
- 17:15Speaker 5: made or right up there with some of the better
- 17:17Speaker 5: throws we've.
- 17:17Speaker 6: Seen in practice.
- 17:18Speaker 5: But I wonder too, you know, I was mentioning the
- 17:20Speaker 5: chemistry with the new guys, how many reps last year
- 17:24Speaker 5: in practice to Tommy DeVito and Efton Chisholm and Kyle Williams,
- 17:27Speaker 5: and like, I'm probably a ton, you know, because those
- 17:30Speaker 5: are the reps that guys were getting at that point
- 17:32Speaker 5: in practices last year. So you can see the difference,
- 17:36Speaker 5: I think in terms of how much de Vito has
- 17:38Speaker 5: probably worked with a lot of those guys on the
- 17:40Speaker 5: second team offense versus you know, how much Drake may
- 17:43Speaker 5: has worked with these new receivers that are around him
- 17:46Speaker 5: right now on the first team offense.
- 17:48Speaker 6: The second team offense has been fun to watch in practice.
- 17:50Speaker 5: They've made some big plays, they pushed the ball down
- 17:52Speaker 5: the field, But I think some of that might have
- 17:55Speaker 5: to do with the fact that he's throwing the guys
- 17:57Speaker 5: that were all here last year that he was working.
- 17:59Speaker 2: With Henry Newly inked a little bit of extra money
- 18:03Speaker 2: in his pocket pitching.
- 18:04Speaker 7: But look at the crowd there, like filling in, Like
- 18:06Speaker 7: Mike said that people, you know, people are coming. I
- 18:08Speaker 7: think these are their their opportunities to see. I think
- 18:11Speaker 7: it's it's more of a controlled you know, you can
- 18:14Speaker 7: control the young controllables. You know, you can set up
- 18:16Speaker 7: a two minute drill, you can set up down in
- 18:18Speaker 7: distance and things that you want. You can set up
- 18:20Speaker 7: if you want to dial up a specific blitz that
- 18:22Speaker 7: the other team can run at a specific time, see.
- 18:24Speaker 1: How you handle it.
- 18:25Speaker 7: So I think that's why the coaches like this setting
- 18:28Speaker 7: more than the game switch. You know, I kind of
- 18:31Speaker 7: told you for a long time somewhat meaningless.
- 18:35Speaker 4: Well, I tell you today, I take some precautions there.
- 18:38Speaker 4: With Hunter Henry, I just think he's so valuable to
- 18:40Speaker 4: this team, and you know, I think it's a work
- 18:42Speaker 4: in progress behind him, with Eli Raredin and Tanner Arkin,
- 18:45Speaker 4: who are getting up to speed. I think they've shown
- 18:48Speaker 4: some positive moments, but I still think it's very scary
- 18:52Speaker 4: to imagine no Hunter Henry and having to somehow piecemeal
- 18:55Speaker 4: it together with Eli Raredin and Tanner Arkin.
- 18:58Speaker 1: You know, I've high.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Hopes for both those guys that down the road they
- 19:01Speaker 4: can develop into into a nice kind of one two
- 19:04Speaker 4: punch there behind Hunter Henry. But it's hard to imagine
- 19:07Speaker 4: what this offense looks like without Hunter Henry, and and
- 19:10Speaker 4: and how the chaos that would kind of ensue by
- 19:13Speaker 4: not having him in the mix.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Has shown good hands.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Yeah, Raandon's had a good camp. I just and I
- 19:18Speaker 5: know I get craft for this, But the rookie tight
- 19:23Speaker 5: end position is one that's slower developing unless you're like
- 19:26Speaker 5: a Tyler Warren that was drafted high highly in the
- 19:29Speaker 5: first round.
- 19:30Speaker 6: I pulled the numbers the other day.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Rookie tight ends last five years that were drafted on
- 19:34Speaker 5: Day two of the draft averaged twenty six catches a season.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Twenty six. Now there's some outliers, you know, Harold Fannon
- 19:41Speaker 5: was an outlier, you know, Mason Taylor with the Jets
- 19:44Speaker 5: last year. I think I had around forty, but it was
- 19:46Speaker 5: on like you know, Paul's things like nine yards of.
- 19:48Speaker 6: Catch, right, so he's catching a buck.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Terrible team, Yeah, a bunch of checkdowns and dump offs,
- 19:53Speaker 5: you know, things like that. But for the most part,
- 19:55Speaker 5: that position is year one is kind of a feeling
- 19:59Speaker 5: out process because of how you know, heavy of a
- 20:02Speaker 5: mental burden is on that spot. So I think Eli
- 20:05Speaker 5: Riordan has shown that he's going to have a role,
- 20:07Speaker 5: and Tanner Arkins shown that he's going to have a role.
- 20:09Speaker 6: I would just caution.
- 20:11Speaker 5: Against thinking that he's gonna have some like Gronk like
- 20:14Speaker 5: rookie year where he's putting up massive numbers right out
- 20:16Speaker 5: of the gate.
- 20:17Speaker 6: No, but I think I.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Think I don't want people to be disappointed because I
- 20:25Speaker 5: think we're hyping him a lot in these practices.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Are we hyping him a lot? Yeah? I think so.
- 20:29Speaker 5: I think that he's getting a lot of hype, and
- 20:30Speaker 5: I think that something who's doing the hyping everybody?
- 20:33Speaker 1: What do you mean? I don't know. I haven't, honestly,
- 20:36Speaker 1: I haven't really.
- 20:37Speaker 2: I've heard that he's, like you said, he's had a
- 20:39Speaker 2: good camp, But I haven't heard people saying, oh, he's
- 20:42Speaker 2: going to be you know, you know, nipping at the
- 20:44Speaker 2: heels to be the number one tight end.
- 20:46Speaker 1: I haven't heard anything like that of you. No.
- 20:48Speaker 5: I but I think that we're hearing that he's having
- 20:50Speaker 5: a good camp. But people hear that he's having a
- 20:52Speaker 5: good camp, they think that he's going to have fifty catches.
- 20:55Speaker 5: And I'm just trying to tell you that that would
- 20:57Speaker 5: be an outlier season for a tight end drafted in
- 20:59Speaker 5: the third as.
- 21:00Speaker 2: A run I'd be happy if he becomes a viable
- 21:02Speaker 2: option when needed.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, that's it. That's it.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Just just just be just be reliable when called a.
- 21:08Speaker 4: Little red zone, little you know, little third down package form.
- 21:11Speaker 5: I think you're looking for the explosive plays from him,
- 21:13Speaker 5: Like Hunter Henry is going to move the chains. Hunter
- 21:15Speaker 5: Henry is going to be a consistent, you know, security
- 21:18Speaker 5: blanket for Drake May. Eli Ardin's thing in college at
- 21:22Speaker 5: Notre Dame is that he averaged over sixteen yards of catch.
- 21:24Speaker 5: He had eight plays of twenty plus yards last year
- 21:27Speaker 5: at Notre Dame. That's not Hunter Henry's game anymore at
- 21:30Speaker 5: thirty one years old, you know, getting down the field,
- 21:32Speaker 5: getting up the seams, things like that. So can eli
- 21:35Speaker 5: riard and add that to the offense, can he can
- 21:37Speaker 5: we call him takeoff routes right and running the seams.
- 21:39Speaker 5: You're running crossers, you know, things like that where he's
- 21:42Speaker 5: just winning foot races across the field at twenty twenty
- 21:45Speaker 5: five catches. Can he average fourteen yards a catch and
- 21:48Speaker 5: be one of those types of guys. It might not
- 21:50Speaker 5: be high volume, but it's something that they can get
- 21:53Speaker 5: some chunk plays out of.
- 21:54Speaker 4: I mean, after watching Devon ASIASI and Don'ton definitely looks
- 21:59Speaker 4: better than the Sorry did I say, did I say
- 22:01Speaker 4: Dalton Kincaid was Dalton? We had a different Dalton I believe,
- 22:05Speaker 4: but no, yeah, Dalton Kilton Keene.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Thank you, Paul.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Uh, you know, those those guys were quiet. Didn't see
- 22:11Speaker 4: a lot of this kind of potentially you've seen from Meriden.
- 22:13Speaker 4: But you know, I just think it's uh, it's like
- 22:15Speaker 4: a lot of these guys. I think getting up to
- 22:17Speaker 4: speed in the offense and being able to play fast
- 22:20Speaker 4: and you know, be consistent, those are the biggest things
- 22:23Speaker 4: for those rookies earning the trust. And I mean I
- 22:25Speaker 4: like what you're saying. I think there's a spot for
- 22:27Speaker 4: those guys, and most likely in Tanna Arkan when eighty
- 22:30Speaker 4: four comes on the field is probably going to be
- 22:31Speaker 4: a run most likely, but maybe they can eventually get
- 22:35Speaker 4: away from that kind of overly specialize. This guy's out here,
- 22:38Speaker 4: it's a past. This guy's out here, it's a run.
- 22:40Speaker 4: But you gotta love this the size and the athleticism
- 22:42Speaker 4: that that Rariden has out there.
- 22:44Speaker 2: We just saw Milton Williams coming up the center of
- 22:46Speaker 2: that defensive line.
- 22:49Speaker 1: See a captain candidate you think this year?
- 22:52Speaker 6: Sure? Yeah, I think so.
- 22:54Speaker 5: You know they he's, in my opinion, you know, one
- 23:00Speaker 5: of their best players, if not the best that they
- 23:02Speaker 5: had last year. I mean it's between him, Drake and
- 23:04Speaker 5: Gonzales for that. And I think that for him though,
- 23:08Speaker 5: what I always stands out to me is how much
- 23:10Speaker 5: energy he plays with, Like he plays with a real motor.
- 23:13Speaker 5: That I think is exactly what Mike Rabel is all about.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Like that's what he wants out of players, That's what
- 23:19Speaker 5: he wants as like an example.
- 23:21Speaker 6: So if you're trying to think about.
- 23:22Speaker 5: Captains, and I would say that that's sort of the
- 23:25Speaker 5: type of guy that would be a captain material to
- 23:27Speaker 5: Mike Rabels, you know him, Robert Splaine, like guys that
- 23:30Speaker 5: just play all out all the time.
- 23:32Speaker 1: I like the two of Williams. He's not really a
- 23:34Speaker 1: raw rock guy.
- 23:35Speaker 4: He's just a straight faced ball guy that loves football
- 23:39Speaker 4: and you know, super serious.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Lets his play to in the talking. But what a
- 23:43Speaker 1: slam dunk signing.
- 23:43Speaker 4: I mean, you knew it was a slam dunk signing
- 23:45Speaker 4: when they signed it, but when you realize how they
- 23:47Speaker 4: want to play and what they want to do, it's
- 23:48Speaker 4: even more of it.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I loved last year.
- 23:50Speaker 2: It was during the or beginning of the playoffs, somewhere
- 23:53Speaker 2: around that time in fortune Foxborough postgame locker room scene
- 23:58Speaker 2: and Rabel's talking and he said something like, you know,
- 24:01Speaker 2: listen to me or something, and they they cut to
- 24:03Speaker 2: Milton Williams and Milton who says, I'm listening, you know,
- 24:07Speaker 2: like it just made me feel good, like he had
- 24:10Speaker 2: totally bought into this program. Yeah, he was a very
- 24:14Speaker 2: high priced free agent, and there were questions when he
- 24:18Speaker 2: came in because he hadn't had that many snaps per
- 24:21Speaker 2: game that he was expected to have here, and so
- 24:25Speaker 2: there were questions about, you know, his durability and how
- 24:27Speaker 2: he would do, and he was consistent throughout the whole season.
- 24:32Speaker 2: I think that was probably one of the best free
- 24:35Speaker 2: agent signings the Patrons have made in a long time.
- 24:37Speaker 7: Yeah, I agree, So I had questions about him playing
- 24:41Speaker 7: the run playing a full time player, and he's been
- 24:43Speaker 7: exceptional in both against the run end the past.
- 24:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, such a.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Physical player for a guy that's not very big for
- 24:52Speaker 5: that position. And I know, you know, he's big for
- 24:54Speaker 5: everybody else, but you know, he plays at like three
- 24:57Speaker 5: oh five maybe, and like that's not huge for defensive linemen,
- 25:01Speaker 5: and he plays with so much power power, his.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Hands are fast leverage.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I'm a little disappointed Barmore is not going to be
- 25:09Speaker 2: out there today with him, because I think when they're
- 25:14Speaker 2: both healthy, that that's the strength of this team. Yeah,
- 25:17Speaker 2: that interior.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Line, I mean, I'm probably forgetting one.
- 25:20Speaker 4: But you know the second week in Miami that that
- 25:22Speaker 4: big sack to you know, basically, I think it what
- 25:25Speaker 4: ended the game. And then against the Chargers, big sack
- 25:27Speaker 4: at the end, they really you know, being that closer.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I think that's you know, some guys.
- 25:31Speaker 4: Can can play well, but you can step up in
- 25:34Speaker 4: those big moments, especially, you know, I look at that
- 25:36Speaker 4: game in Miami, which I think rab Will you know,
- 25:38Speaker 4: pointed out too is just being impressed that his team
- 25:41Speaker 4: was able to bounce back and pull out a win.
- 25:43Speaker 4: Last year on the road in a really really hard
- 25:46Speaker 4: place to play. I mean, we all know Patriots record
- 25:48Speaker 4: down there in Miami and how how hard it can
- 25:50Speaker 4: be to get wins down there. But that to me,
- 25:52Speaker 4: Milt Williams stepping up in those big moments, making those
- 25:55Speaker 4: big plays, that's just you know, that's like the cherry
- 25:58Speaker 4: on top. And not all only is he great player,
- 26:00Speaker 4: but he's he's making game changing plays at the end.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels and Mike Rabel going over last minute plans,
- 26:08Speaker 2: but as Rabel said in his press conference today, it's
- 26:13Speaker 2: all mapped out. Yeah, they they've scripted this whole thing,
- 26:16Speaker 2: and I'm sure that both teams have shared their scripts.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Maybe you know, not the plays themselves, but yeah, you know,
- 26:22Speaker 2: we're gonna in this period, this is what we're gonna do.
- 26:25Speaker 4: I mean, I've seen enough of these now that they're
- 26:27Speaker 4: all kind of the same. You know exactly what you're
- 26:30Speaker 4: gonna expect. They're going to be some stretching, you're going
- 26:32Speaker 4: to walk through some stuff of what you want to do.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Then you're going right into one on ones, you know,
- 26:36Speaker 1: and then after one on ones, you're gonna have a
- 26:38Speaker 1: middle team period.
- 26:39Speaker 4: You're gonna have some red zone periods, and you know,
- 26:41Speaker 4: like I said, that two minute drill at the end is.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Usually the most fun. But you know, I go back
- 26:45Speaker 1: to Evan.
- 26:46Speaker 4: We were in Vegas after we hiked our way through
- 26:49Speaker 4: the desert to find an in and out.
- 26:51Speaker 1: The next day we were recovering.
- 26:52Speaker 4: But you know, that was a good That was a
- 26:55Speaker 4: good performance by Mac Jones and the Patriots offense.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I remember they you know, had a big touchdown at
- 26:59Speaker 1: the end of the two minutes drill. It was probably
- 27:01Speaker 1: maybe the high point.
- 27:02Speaker 6: What wasn't a good practice.
- 27:04Speaker 4: The whole thing was terrible, and then they have a
- 27:06Speaker 4: good two minute drive at the end and they score
- 27:08Speaker 4: a touchdown and you're like, all right, maybe it's not
- 27:10Speaker 4: quite as bad as we think it's going to be.
- 27:12Speaker 1: But guess what it was that way to bring it down.
- 27:15Speaker 7: Well, sorry, but you know it's just you give me that.
- 27:17Speaker 7: He makes it sound like it was exciting. That was
- 27:20Speaker 7: the most exciting thing. That whole story was the in
- 27:22Speaker 7: and out trip.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a long while.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Yeah, we were like we can walk it and it's
- 27:27Speaker 5: like one hundred and twenty degrees in the you know,
- 27:29Speaker 5: Vegas desert, and we overestimated our abilities.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Podcasts at pagries dot com is the way to email
- 27:37Speaker 2: US football. Flynn Rights in a big fan of Land Larison,
- 27:42Speaker 2: wondering if you guys had some predictions about if he'll
- 27:45Speaker 2: make the roster.
- 27:47Speaker 5: I think that him and Terrell Jennings right now are
- 27:49Speaker 5: probably the most likely to win the third running back spot.
- 27:53Speaker 5: But I think that spot in particular, you know, maybe
- 27:56Speaker 5: not so much with the other positions, but preseason games
- 27:59Speaker 5: where you're actually tackled guys to the ground, I think
- 28:01Speaker 5: is maybe a little bit more important at running back.
- 28:04Speaker 5: It's it's hard to evaluate that position in practice because
- 28:07Speaker 5: you're not evaluating tackle breaking and how they finish runs
- 28:10Speaker 5: and things like that. So it's harder to evaluate maybe
- 28:14Speaker 5: one of those undrafted rookies Miller or or I guess
- 28:17Speaker 5: he's a seventh round pick, Miles Montgomery, the undrafted rookie.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Uh.
- 28:20Speaker 6: They maybe they make a push.
- 28:21Speaker 5: In the preseason games and that makes the coaching staff
- 28:24Speaker 5: take a longer look at them in practice. But right
- 28:26Speaker 5: now we've seen a lot of Terrell Jennings and Lynn
- 28:28Speaker 5: theirs and with the second.
- 28:29Speaker 4: Team, Yeah, Terrell Jennings like right in the mix, Like
- 28:32Speaker 4: after he got back in it Paul A couple of summers ago,
- 28:34Speaker 4: we were we were kind of on a team Terrell Jennings.
- 28:37Speaker 4: I felt like we kind of left, you know, we
- 28:38Speaker 4: saw some glimpses of him. I always kind of like him,
- 28:41Speaker 4: Like he got back out here, and I'm always geez,
- 28:43Speaker 4: he's got pretty good size.
- 28:44Speaker 1: He runs kind of hard. Yeah, for an extra running back.
- 28:47Speaker 7: He does like he's not flashy, he's just sort of
- 28:51Speaker 7: straight ahead, straightforward.
- 28:52Speaker 1: H you know, he runs hard. You know, at some point.
- 28:56Speaker 7: He's got to show some consistency and he's got to
- 28:59Speaker 7: stay healthy. So those are the things that have really
- 29:01Speaker 7: held him back a little bit.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Is I think he's.
- 29:04Speaker 7: Had some concussion issues, and obviously those are unfortunate and
- 29:07Speaker 7: they need to be taken seriously. But you know, when
- 29:10Speaker 7: he's out there, I think as a backup, I think
- 29:12Speaker 7: he fills the role fine.
- 29:13Speaker 1: RB three. Yeah, Yeah, I agree with Evan.
- 29:16Speaker 7: I don't necessarily think you have to go out of
- 29:18Speaker 7: your way to save that roster spot. You might be
- 29:20Speaker 7: able to manipulate the practice squad rules a little bit
- 29:23Speaker 7: with that, but I have no problems with general.
- 29:25Speaker 1: A little scan of the field's house here.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Yeah, i'd see the two to Evan's point, there's not
- 29:31Speaker 4: a lot. You know, the preseason can be a little
- 29:33Speaker 4: bit tough to watch the times, but I do think
- 29:35Speaker 4: the running backs with actual tackling, that's you know, one
- 29:37Speaker 4: position to watch when you get into the preseason game.
- 29:40Speaker 7: So you know, who's the guy that left the NFL
- 29:42Speaker 7: and rushing a couple of years you know, Ralph Webb.
- 29:44Speaker 7: It's a lot more than a couple of years ago, now, Ralph,
- 29:46Speaker 7: Ralph Webb. It wasn't him.
- 29:48Speaker 1: It was a guy.
- 29:49Speaker 7: There's a guy from San Francisco, Well that came here
- 29:53Speaker 7: and just ran all over everybody. And I'm not somebody's
- 29:57Speaker 7: got to get the someone's got to get the carries
- 29:59Speaker 7: in the preseason, Yeah, but get tackled.
- 30:02Speaker 5: I'm not saying a you know, fourth quarter of the
- 30:04Speaker 5: preseason game that I'm gonna put much stock into you know,
- 30:07Speaker 5: which undrafted rookie running back is going off. But I
- 30:10Speaker 5: don't think that you can get a whole lot out
- 30:12Speaker 5: of practice at that position.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Oh totally, totally. You guys are right about that.
- 30:17Speaker 5: I mean, maybe, like if you're watching the film back
- 30:19Speaker 5: and you're seeing you know that they picked this blitz
- 30:21Speaker 5: up and were they in the right gap and like
- 30:23Speaker 5: all that. Maybe like you can get into that kind
- 30:25Speaker 5: of stuff, But and.
- 30:26Speaker 7: I wouldn't dismiss if you've got a situation where like
- 30:28Speaker 7: Larison is out there, let's say Thursday night, so it's
- 30:32Speaker 7: no Drake May, but Tommy DeVito's out there, and he's
- 30:35Speaker 7: got a semblance of the offensive line. So let's say
- 30:37Speaker 7: Will Campbell, Jared Wilson and mikel Went who were playing
- 30:42Speaker 7: maybe Moses and Barret Tucker. Don't you know when Larsson's
- 30:46Speaker 7: out there at the start playing against a semblance of
- 30:48Speaker 7: the Colts starters on defense and he shows a little flash,
- 30:51Speaker 7: I would say there's something to be gained by that, Yeah,
- 30:54Speaker 7: as opposed to you know, once the game continues and
- 30:57Speaker 7: it's threes against threes, right, My threes are better than
- 31:01Speaker 7: your threes. That that's taught me Devido in the Giants
- 31:04Speaker 7: game last year.
- 31:05Speaker 6: That's when the.
- 31:05Speaker 5: Next gen is on the overdrive because they have the
- 31:09Speaker 5: players that are on the field and actually tells you
- 31:11Speaker 5: in real time who's on the field. And you start
- 31:14Speaker 5: to see some of the you know, Sonny's car wash people, Paul.
- 31:18Speaker 7: Some of us Fred just look look down and we're like, oh, yeah,
- 31:22Speaker 7: he's a third stringer, right, Yeah, some of us have
- 31:25Speaker 7: to go to next gen to do it.
- 31:26Speaker 1: But you know this is this is where he's studying
- 31:29Speaker 1: the chief step chart.
- 31:30Speaker 6: Good Paul, Sorry, sorry for doing my job. I'll see
- 31:34Speaker 6: myself up.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Well, there's different ways to do the job, that's all.
- 31:37Speaker 1: The works smarter, it works, works smarter, not hotter.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Paul and Germany writes in at podcast at Patriots dot Com.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Thanks for the vibes.
- 31:46Speaker 2: I'd be interested in your opinion, especially now after the
- 31:49Speaker 2: Henry extension. Who do you think will be extended after
- 31:52Speaker 2: the twenty sixth season? And he's got a list of
- 31:54Speaker 2: six Douglas, I think a lot depends on how they
- 31:58Speaker 2: do this year, right Booty, I don't know if he'll
- 32:03Speaker 2: be on the team.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Hollins, Yeah, what does that mean? I mean, what is
- 32:09Speaker 1: that grunt me?
- 32:11Speaker 4: I think these are all really interesting conversations they have,
- 32:13Speaker 4: and I think a lot of it is based on
- 32:15Speaker 4: you know.
- 32:15Speaker 1: This year.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, Pop Douglas has been great in camp.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Paul pointed out he's been great in camp before, but
- 32:22Speaker 4: I don't know. I kind of have high hopes for
- 32:23Speaker 4: him and could see maybe him earning an extension perhaps.
- 32:29Speaker 7: So I have a little update off the Twitter machine.
- 32:32Speaker 7: You know, we're up here. We're trying to do our
- 32:34Speaker 7: best to see who's here. Some of the Patriots writers
- 32:37Speaker 7: are reporting right now that they have not seen Christian
- 32:39Speaker 7: Gonzales yet, which I think is an interesting subplot to
- 32:45Speaker 7: this Kumbai yo the last two and a half weeks, Well, do.
- 32:48Speaker 1: You think the fact that Pierce isn't here?
- 32:50Speaker 2: Like I said, no, but Sarah's like like, why yeah,
- 32:53Speaker 2: Like what am I really going to gain from today?
- 32:57Speaker 2: I could get hurt because you know, we're going against
- 32:59Speaker 2: another team and it might be a little bit more
- 33:02Speaker 2: intense than when I'm going against my teammates.
- 33:05Speaker 7: The last part true to drive out Why risk it?
- 33:08Speaker 1: You know?
- 33:09Speaker 4: I mean I said to Paul yesterday we didn't spot
- 33:11Speaker 4: Christian Gonzalez off the bat, and I said, every day
- 33:13Speaker 4: I'm kind of holding my breath to see. At what
- 33:15Speaker 4: point does he say, Okay, I think I'm kind of
- 33:17Speaker 4: ready for the season, and now I'm gonna you know,
- 33:19Speaker 4: close it down. Possible it's today, but we'll see he's.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Insign signing the contract right now and then we'll be
- 33:26Speaker 1: out there.
- 33:27Speaker 7: That absolutely could be the case, and That's why I
- 33:29Speaker 7: don't draw a lot of conclusions.
- 33:30Speaker 1: I just state the facts.
- 33:31Speaker 7: Mark Daniels tweeted out that absent Christian Gonzales, Mike Brown,
- 33:35Speaker 7: veteran safety Julian Ashby, and Kyle Dixon, those are the
- 33:38Speaker 7: four guys that he hadn't spotted.
- 33:40Speaker 1: So I'm just stating that off the tweet. I'm not
- 33:44Speaker 1: saying why balis.
- 33:45Speaker 7: But Mike and I did have this conversation yesterday because
- 33:48Speaker 7: Gonzo was a little late coming out for him yesterday.
- 33:50Speaker 7: He's usually sort of middle of a pack with those
- 33:53Speaker 7: defensive backs, and he was very late arriving, and Mike
- 33:56Speaker 7: and I sort of started wondering, Huh, he's sent in.
- 33:58Speaker 5: The stage to not practice, and so I would just
- 34:01Speaker 5: say this really quickly, and I because I have to
- 34:04Speaker 5: put con He did get banged up on that plays
- 34:07Speaker 5: a little bit with Romeo Dobbs at the end of practice,
- 34:10Speaker 5: and I watched him go up and down the sideline
- 34:12Speaker 5: try I think it was his ankle, maybe turned an ankle,
- 34:15Speaker 5: and he was trying to walk it off.
- 34:16Speaker 6: And you know, obviously I.
- 34:18Speaker 5: Know all all of Paul's shows in the headlines are
- 34:20Speaker 5: going to be is this contract related? Which it very
- 34:22Speaker 5: well could be, but I think that there was an
- 34:25Speaker 5: instance yesterday where he did look like he got a
- 34:28Speaker 5: little bit banged up. And it was at the very
- 34:30Speaker 5: very end of practice when Romeo Dobbs made that catch
- 34:33Speaker 5: in the back of the end zone. They both went
- 34:35Speaker 5: up and when Gonzo came down, he looked like maybe
- 34:37Speaker 5: he banged up his ankle or his leg or something.
- 34:41Speaker 5: So maybe that's also just you know, precautionary in all directions, right,
- 34:47Speaker 5: Like you're a little banged up, you know, without a contract,
- 34:49Speaker 5: you also don't want to go out there.
- 34:51Speaker 2: And let's not forget the Patriots have too joined practices
- 34:54Speaker 2: next week with the Eagles, so we may not see
- 34:57Speaker 2: Gonzales for a little while.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Yeah, well, well we'll see, I mean this weekend they'll
- 35:02Speaker 4: have some practices too, so we'll get, you know, a
- 35:04Speaker 4: little glimpse in between the two. But yeah, I mean,
- 35:07Speaker 4: Calton Davis back yesterday, but I don't know if he's
- 35:09Speaker 4: going to be, you know, participating right out of the
- 35:11Speaker 4: shoot after being missing some time. I think was what
- 35:13Speaker 4: was maybe a hamstring. I think that was what we're speculating.
- 35:16Speaker 4: So it's gonna be worked for the for the younger guys.
- 35:19Speaker 4: Nothing on Charles Woods, Paul, Sorry, I meant a missed it.
- 35:21Speaker 7: He's back, but I expect him to be limited the way,
- 35:25Speaker 7: you know, far more. And you know, I would assume
- 35:28Speaker 7: Davis won't do anything with the Colts too.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and I don't think Josh Downs is here.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Ev Is that right?
- 35:34Speaker 5: So they said they said that Josh Downs was if
- 35:37Speaker 5: you can be questionable for a joint practice, then Josh
- 35:40Speaker 5: Downs was questionable for the joint practice. So I'm not
- 35:43Speaker 5: one hundred percent sure. But he was also banged up.
- 35:45Speaker 5: Al Pierce hasn't practiced all summer. He had surgery in
- 35:48Speaker 5: March and hasn't practice at all. But the stiking sounded
- 35:53Speaker 5: like cautiously optimistic that maybe Downs would participate now.
- 35:57Speaker 4: And he was Drake's like go to guy, right.
- 35:59Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, his true sophomore year at North Carolina, Josh
- 36:04Speaker 5: Downs was his number one receiver and probably their best
- 36:07Speaker 5: overall player on that team.
- 36:09Speaker 6: Uh, young Drake.
- 36:11Speaker 5: I remember watching Josh Downs at North Carolina for that
- 36:15Speaker 5: draft and uh texting Bart and being like, who's the quarterback?
- 36:19Speaker 6: They?
- 36:19Speaker 1: How do we get?
- 36:20Speaker 5: And we at the time because where you know, uh
- 36:24Speaker 5: dumb thought there was no well there's no chance they're
- 36:27Speaker 5: going to be picking that high, right, so so you
- 36:29Speaker 5: know we're not going to get the motor back. But
- 36:31Speaker 5: that was Drake May's best season in college was his
- 36:34Speaker 5: sophomore season at UNC, and and Downs was his.
- 36:37Speaker 6: Go to guy.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Uh. Tom writes in he wants to know, should fans
- 36:42Speaker 2: be excited about the expectations of A. J.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Brown and Romeo Dobbs?
- 36:47Speaker 4: Yes, yes, you sure, it's you know, it's a pretty
- 36:50Speaker 4: good uh. I still still think there's a ways to
- 36:53Speaker 4: go with everything that that they can accomplish. But the
- 36:57Speaker 4: good sign has been Dobbs coming on in these last
- 36:59Speaker 4: couple of practices is and then of course having that
- 37:01Speaker 4: big catch yesterday over Gonzales.
- 37:04Speaker 1: So really positive signs.
- 37:05Speaker 4: I mean, if those two guys can develop into a
- 37:07Speaker 4: complimentary pair where their skill sets match each other and
- 37:12Speaker 4: help each other get open, and you know, also help
- 37:14Speaker 4: a guy like Pop Douglas maybe get some extra space,
- 37:17Speaker 4: especially downfield, I mean that's uh, you know, they could
- 37:20Speaker 4: really be cooking with something with those three guys. And
- 37:22Speaker 4: you know, going back to your question Fred about who
- 37:24Speaker 4: should they resign, it's it's kind of an opportunity to rejigger.
- 37:27Speaker 4: I mean, how does Kyle Williams look this year? Kyle
- 37:29Speaker 4: Williams has a really good year, you know, are you
- 37:31Speaker 4: less inclined?
- 37:32Speaker 1: You know? Matt Collins, I don't know.
- 37:33Speaker 4: He's always seems like such a special kind of a
- 37:35Speaker 4: guy that they like to do a special kind of
- 37:37Speaker 4: a thing. He's bounced around the league, he's had his
- 37:40Speaker 4: two years here. Do they kind of say okay, let's
- 37:42Speaker 4: let's move.
- 37:42Speaker 1: On, or do they love special contract? Yeah?
- 37:46Speaker 4: Yeah, so yeah, I think there's some decisions to make
- 37:49Speaker 4: and a lot of it is dependent on how this
- 37:52Speaker 4: year goes for guys, especially like you know, if Pop
- 37:55Speaker 4: Douglas has a huge year this year, I could see
- 37:58Speaker 4: them definitely trying to check keep him around. Yeah, but
- 38:01Speaker 4: you got Drake too, and that's the big piece and
- 38:02Speaker 4: you got to figure that out first and then you can.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Probably get to these other guys.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Yep, yeah, so much, you know, for these guys depends
- 38:09Speaker 2: on what they do this year. And you know, if
- 38:13Speaker 2: Pop Douglas has a great year, yeah, i'd give him
- 38:16Speaker 2: a little bit of an extension. But like you said,
- 38:18Speaker 2: you got a factor in Drake. Yeah, that's gonna be
- 38:21Speaker 2: a huge, huge contract.
- 38:22Speaker 4: And I think, you know, if Dobbs, I mean, Dobb's
- 38:24Speaker 4: here on a four year deal, so he's you know,
- 38:26Speaker 4: we know Brown will probably be somewhere year to year.
- 38:29Speaker 1: But that's a good place to start.
- 38:30Speaker 4: If you got Brown and Dobbs and Kyle Williams comes on,
- 38:33Speaker 4: and you got those three guys, and you know, maybe
- 38:35Speaker 4: Raridan starts to come on a little bit, Chizz Threat
- 38:38Speaker 4: and chis him. You know, it's it's a good starting
- 38:41Speaker 4: three and you've got some depth then at tight end that.
- 38:44Speaker 1: You're starting to develop a little bit.
- 38:47Speaker 4: So I think they'd been in pretty good shape.
- 38:49Speaker 2: Logan and Myrtle Beach saw an unofficial depth chart on
- 38:53Speaker 2: Twitter early and was wondering if there's any surprises on there, Well,
- 38:57Speaker 2: we have we don't know what depth chart you're talking about,
- 39:00Speaker 2: So how do we know if there's any surprises to us?
- 39:03Speaker 5: Well, I know what depth chart he's talking about, but
- 39:04Speaker 5: it does. It's called the unofficial depth chart for a
- 39:07Speaker 5: reason because it has no who publishes it. The pr
- 39:11Speaker 5: Patriots pr oh.
- 39:12Speaker 1: The one on Patriots dot com.
- 39:14Speaker 5: Well yeah, now, because it's a game week, it's kind
- 39:17Speaker 5: of it's out, like unofficially out.
- 39:20Speaker 2: So it's it's the one on Patriots dot com that
- 39:22Speaker 2: somebody put on Twitter.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah, is that what you're saying, correct? Okay? I mean yeah,
- 39:28Speaker 1: there's no surprises there. I mean I would say it's
- 39:31Speaker 1: not really going through football.
- 39:33Speaker 2: So unless it's somebody else's depth chart, I don't know.
- 39:36Speaker 2: I don't honestly, I don't know which one.
- 39:37Speaker 6: You know that's what he's talking about.
- 39:39Speaker 4: Okay, if it's the Patriots dot com one, Uh, it's
- 39:42Speaker 4: more from people like us in content than it is
- 39:45Speaker 4: uh in people at football, So I would take everything
- 39:48Speaker 4: with a grainsalt.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it's unofficial for a reason. Yeah, you know.
- 39:52Speaker 2: I was going over other teams depth charts on their
- 39:56Speaker 2: official websites, and a lot of teams don't even it
- 40:00Speaker 2: in the faux roster of.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Their depth chart. The cults are one, yeah, culture.
- 40:05Speaker 7: I was scrambling last week trying to get the information
- 40:07Speaker 7: for the magazine and I wanted to see if I
- 40:10Speaker 7: could steal one off the website, and they probably only
- 40:12Speaker 7: had about twenty five names on it.
- 40:13Speaker 1: I think they only they don't.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Put any rookies or anybody that's new to the team
- 40:18Speaker 2: right is even on it.
- 40:19Speaker 1: That's why I've.
- 40:20Speaker 7: Tried our Lands, but it doesn't translate to the program
- 40:23Speaker 7: that we need our our land.
- 40:25Speaker 2: You have to hour No, it's our last our lads.
- 40:30Speaker 7: They're not yours, they're not mine, they're ours, but our
- 40:34Speaker 7: is a r e.
- 40:36Speaker 6: This is our lads.
- 40:38Speaker 4: Yes, uh, you know, one more guy, one more guy,
- 40:42Speaker 4: one more guy, more guy on more got to be
- 40:44Speaker 4: excited and smiled about what do you got, Mike? You know,
- 40:46Speaker 4: even your friend Mike Giardi Paul is excited about this guy.
- 40:49Speaker 4: Aj Halsey, rookie safety number twenty five, really liked him.
- 40:53Speaker 4: Super physical guy.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Uh.
- 40:56Speaker 4: She already had a tweet about him, like watched him.
- 40:59Speaker 4: Oh my lord, h he's a guy. We'd be careful
- 41:02Speaker 4: cross in the middle with him today even though they're
- 41:04Speaker 4: not they're not tackling me. He's a really physical guy.
- 41:07Speaker 4: I don't know if you really fit the Patriots system,
- 41:09Speaker 4: but he was like you know when you watch somebody
- 41:10Speaker 4: and you're like, this guy plays with his hair on
- 41:12Speaker 4: fire and just tough SB And that's that's Aj Halsey, old.
- 41:16Speaker 5: School box safety. Yeah, you know, like he's camp chancellor,
- 41:20Speaker 5: you know like that. I wonder how he runs, you know,
- 41:23Speaker 5: Like that was one thing that I was a little
- 41:25Speaker 5: bit worried about if you're gonna play him in the
- 41:27Speaker 5: deep part of the field, if you're gonna have him
- 41:29Speaker 5: cover tight ends, like was he gonna be able to
- 41:31Speaker 5: to keep up in those foot races?
- 41:32Speaker 6: But he can hit, man, he definitely can.
- 41:35Speaker 2: So we're watching the Patriots stretch out a little stretching
- 41:39Speaker 2: out before they do this before every practice. And while
- 41:42Speaker 2: we're watching this, uh just want to ask, did you
- 41:45Speaker 2: guys catch Adam Viniti's speech at in Canton?
- 41:49Speaker 1: He did? I did? Yeah?
- 41:51Speaker 4: Making some shots yeah, Bill, But now just really cool
- 41:55Speaker 4: to see Adam vinentery finally, finally, I mean, what you
- 41:59Speaker 4: have to wait one year?
- 42:01Speaker 1: But you know, I just I've been working on a
- 42:02Speaker 1: project for.
- 42:03Speaker 4: Ninety six and man, it was a bumpy start for
- 42:06Speaker 4: Adam Vanitaria. I mean there's by like the third game,
- 42:08Speaker 4: you got Jerry Glanville on the radio call saying, if
- 42:11Speaker 4: he misses this kick, they got to go find a
- 42:13Speaker 4: new kicker, you know. I mean that's how tenuous it
- 42:16Speaker 4: was for Adam Vanitaria right from the get going.
- 42:18Speaker 1: So Paul was that the year. It might have been
- 42:20Speaker 1: ninety seven.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Parcells was the coach, so it had to be ninety
- 42:24Speaker 2: six where he in Kansas City. He clanked it off
- 42:27Speaker 2: the goalpost, and then Parcells didn't come out for the press,
- 42:31Speaker 2: the media.
- 42:31Speaker 7: A whole different year in ninety five. Parcells didn't come
- 42:37Speaker 7: out for the press in Kansas City.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Okay.
- 42:39Speaker 7: Vnitaria didn't become a Patriot until ninety six. He missed
- 42:42Speaker 7: the kick in Kansas City.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Kansas City off the upright. Pete Carroll ninety nine, my
- 42:47Speaker 1: first year.
- 42:48Speaker 7: Okay, may know anything else you want to know, sixteen
- 42:51Speaker 7: to fourteen loss in that Kansas City. Ya, I got
- 42:53Speaker 7: one more for you part Drew drove inside the ten
- 42:55Speaker 7: and lost. Because that's what Drew did. He just somehow
- 42:58Speaker 7: found a way that you know, the the greatest kicker
- 43:01Speaker 7: in the history of kicking, missed a thirty two yard
- 43:03Speaker 7: field goal that would have won the game after like
- 43:06Speaker 7: a seventy yard drive long pass to Sean Jefferson got
- 43:09Speaker 7: him down inside the ten, would have made four and zero,
- 43:14Speaker 7: and then that kind of started things.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Going the other way. Yeah, got a Paul, Paul, what
- 43:17Speaker 1: was the game? Shoot?
- 43:18Speaker 4: We were just I just watched in ninety six of
- 43:20Speaker 4: the TNT night game that they that they.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Pulled out Buffalo, Buffalo.
- 43:24Speaker 4: You know what was crazy to me about that game
- 43:26Speaker 4: was that Troy Brown had one catch coming into that game,
- 43:29Speaker 4: and then all of a sudden at the end, with
- 43:30Speaker 4: the game on the line, here's Troy Brown with like
- 43:33Speaker 4: three catches out of nowhere, and they're like, where's this
- 43:35Speaker 4: guy been all year?
- 43:37Speaker 6: Kind of an.
- 43:38Speaker 4: Interesting start for Toroy Brown there. It was another kind
- 43:40Speaker 4: of thing that stood out to me.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Troy Brown was cut twice in his first year by Parcels.
- 43:46Speaker 1: And was he a rookie in ninety six?
- 43:48Speaker 4: No, ninety five, So he's been around.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I think he was rookie in ninety three. Yeah he was.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Yeah, Oh man, it was part I think it was
- 43:54Speaker 2: Parcell's first.
- 43:55Speaker 1: He's another like Edelman kind of think it was an
- 43:57Speaker 1: eight round pick in ninety three. Water treaded water for.
- 44:00Speaker 4: A couple of seasons until he was able to build
- 44:04Speaker 4: up Patriots Hall of Fame career.
- 44:05Speaker 7: Now, like at the time, you know, Terry Glean comes in.
- 44:10Speaker 7: They had Sean Jefferson, they had Ben Coates. Vincent Brisbee
- 44:13Speaker 7: was a pretty productive guy for them. Frisbee, you know
- 44:16Speaker 7: heading into ninety six. He pulled a hamstring in ninety
- 44:18Speaker 7: six and barely played the whole year. And they also,
- 44:22Speaker 7: you know, Drew through a ton of passes to like
- 44:25Speaker 7: Leroy Thompson later Keith Byers, So they had a lot
- 44:29Speaker 7: of pass catches at the time. And you know, Troy
- 44:32Speaker 7: took a little while to sort of harve out a
- 44:35Speaker 7: niche yep, and once he did, I mean, Drew loved
- 44:37Speaker 7: him from the start. He wanted to keep him when
- 44:40Speaker 7: he was a rookie. He thought the guy had had
- 44:41Speaker 7: a lot of potential in ninety.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Three, that's what sitt out to me.
- 44:44Speaker 4: And the catches in ninety six, that's what you told
- 44:46Speaker 4: me right right when you o over over some double
- 44:49Speaker 4: back wine.
- 44:49Speaker 1: I'm sure Keith Byers h back, yeah, remember that. Ye.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Another crazy part of that with ninety six season was
- 44:55Speaker 1: him getting cut.
- 44:55Speaker 4: Keith Byer's getting cut by Miami Patriots. Bring him in
- 44:59Speaker 4: like second Amy's theory had like seven catches, you know.
- 45:02Speaker 1: All over the place.
- 45:03Speaker 7: But here's a valuable guy for a short period of
- 45:05Speaker 7: time in his career, and he did some good stuff
- 45:07Speaker 7: for him.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Aiden in California. I know why Paul likes the Bill
- 45:12Speaker 2: City uniforms. The reason is because of the same colors
- 45:15Speaker 2: as the diet PEPSI.
- 45:18Speaker 1: I didn't realize that I didn't know what I was
- 45:19Speaker 1: stepping into it. Believe me, I heard about it.
- 45:21Speaker 5: People are appalled, like worse uniforms of all time. I
- 45:24Speaker 5: don't know which is completely, which is complete, like.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Grown men with their uniform fetishes. It's unbelieving one way, right, Oh,
- 45:33Speaker 1: I know, I know the two of them.
- 45:36Speaker 5: I'm not you know, I like style. No, that's that's
- 45:39Speaker 5: more fashion. That's barth slant on catch twenty two. You
- 45:42Speaker 5: tell me what face masks you know so and so
- 45:44Speaker 5: is wearing.
- 45:45Speaker 1: That's a funny joke. Though they do look like die
- 45:49Speaker 1: I can see that. What's wrong with that? It feels
- 45:52Speaker 1: like the Homer Simpson thing were good color cod color combination.
- 45:56Speaker 1: You hear that. I think the Simpsons might be coming
- 45:58Speaker 1: to an energy had that. Oh no, really.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Talking to the team, telling them what's going to be
- 46:04Speaker 2: critical today?
- 46:08Speaker 1: No fighting? Do you think he knows he says that
- 46:11Speaker 1: the way says it. I think you're talking enough.
- 46:15Speaker 4: You all got your own uh cadences and millionaires.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Well, I'm just I'm flashing back to some joint.
- 46:22Speaker 4: Practice memories and uh you know, of course the fight
- 46:24Speaker 4: here against the Panthers and Dietrich Wise of all people
- 46:27Speaker 4: like went went ham.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Uh.
- 46:29Speaker 4: But I think one of my favorite memories joint practice,
- 46:32Speaker 4: the memories when we were in Green Bay and we
- 46:35Speaker 4: were the Patriots were warming up on one field separated
- 46:38Speaker 4: from the Packers.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Movie.
- 46:40Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like quiet. You know, it's almost like it
- 46:42Speaker 4: is right now where the Colts are down on the
- 46:43Speaker 4: Patriots quiet practice field, and then there are at it's
- 46:46Speaker 4: time and we walked through their field house.
- 46:49Speaker 1: And it's like you're walking into thunder.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Just the fans are screaming the music and they're just
- 46:55Speaker 4: they got there starting eleven on offense on one field,
- 46:57Speaker 4: they got their starting eleven defense and it was just
- 46:59Speaker 4: like right into it. It Uh, just such a really
- 47:01Speaker 4: cool moment, great energy, and then you know she's that
- 47:04Speaker 4: practice too. That was one where it was like every
- 47:07Speaker 4: other play the second day there was a fight.
- 47:09Speaker 6: Yeah, No, that was that was like, that was really cool.
- 47:12Speaker 5: I mean, then you go to a city like that
- 47:13Speaker 5: at Green Bay where football is literally everything there at
- 47:18Speaker 5: the Packers And so was that.
- 47:19Speaker 1: The year the game actually got shortened? Yes, yeah, I
- 47:23Speaker 1: supposed to go to Tennessee after that.
- 47:26Speaker 5: No, it was an Isaiah Bolden concussion. Yeah, but at
- 47:30Speaker 5: the end of the very very end of the game.
- 47:32Speaker 5: He got hit pretty badly and and they called the game.
- 47:36Speaker 6: And then Bill said we're going home.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and we.
- 47:40Speaker 6: Went to Tennessee.
- 47:41Speaker 4: I was had because I was supposed to. I flew
- 47:42Speaker 4: back to Boston back to Tennessee forget it.
- 47:46Speaker 6: Yeah, So that was.
- 47:48Speaker 5: That was a good two days though, And it was
- 47:52Speaker 5: back and forth, and even then Mac Jones made some
- 47:55Speaker 5: plays and yeah, taekwon, right, taekwond got when taekwon got her. Yeah,
- 48:02Speaker 5: DeVante Parker on Russell Douglas down the left sideline.
- 48:07Speaker 7: Oh see the defensive and DeVante Parker. It's amazing it
- 48:12Speaker 7: didn't work out.
- 48:13Speaker 2: We've come a long way, PAULI defensive bats warming up here.
- 48:16Speaker 2: And as we said earlier, no Christian Gonzales on the field.
- 48:21Speaker 1: But there's Carlton Davis at number seven.
- 48:23Speaker 7: It'd be interesting to see if he comes out at all.
- 48:26Speaker 7: But yeah, I mean, I I would be lying if
- 48:29Speaker 7: I if I would say I was really surprised, just
- 48:31Speaker 7: based on a conversation yesterday, man, Yeah, sure, just.
- 48:35Speaker 1: Kind of one certain point. I more wonder if if
- 48:39Speaker 1: maybe he's signing a contract.
- 48:41Speaker 5: What happened at the end of practice yesterday It's one
- 48:44Speaker 5: thing to practice when your body is feeling one hundred
- 48:46Speaker 5: percent healthy, but then the second.
- 48:48Speaker 6: That there's like a little bit of a scare.
- 48:50Speaker 5: I wonder if that you know, not to not to yeah,
- 48:54Speaker 5: not to make a comparison, but like Jason Tatum in
- 48:57Speaker 5: Game seven last year, like as soon as the Celtics
- 48:59Speaker 5: were like, oh there, no, you're not playing in this game,
- 49:02Speaker 5: And I wonder for Gonzales if it was something similar.
- 49:05Speaker 2: To I you know, I don't think it wasn't a
- 49:08Speaker 2: contract issue. But when Moss came here the first year
- 49:10Speaker 2: training camp, he was out there for like two practices.
- 49:13Speaker 2: I think he might have tweaked his hamstring a little bit.
- 49:15Speaker 2: We never saw him again. I'm good, you know that
- 49:18Speaker 2: was it? I mean, just what did last year?
- 49:21Speaker 4: You know, Mike Crable has been pretty upfront with the
- 49:23Speaker 4: media about participation in those kind of things.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Uh do you think perhaps if.
- 49:27Speaker 4: It was an injury, he might have said, you know,
- 49:28Speaker 4: god's a little I mean, or I'm just speculating here.
- 49:32Speaker 4: Might you expect him to cut that off at the
- 49:34Speaker 4: pass and say it twasn't and.
- 49:36Speaker 7: John if no one asked him, because then you know, well,
- 49:38Speaker 7: why is it you know, why was he so quick
- 49:40Speaker 7: to say that, right?
- 49:40Speaker 4: You know, yeah, right, you do the dance consistent.
- 49:44Speaker 6: I just know that this.
- 49:45Speaker 5: Will get run with for obvious reasons about the contract,
- 49:48Speaker 5: and I I think it might be a little bit
- 49:51Speaker 5: of call a, a little bit of Colum B. You know, yeah,
- 49:54Speaker 5: because when I saw him yesterday limping around and trying
- 49:57Speaker 5: to stretch out because you're talking, I was like, uh oh,
- 50:00Speaker 5: that's not great, and you know, you kind of make
- 50:02Speaker 5: notes of those things. And then he's not out here today.
- 50:05Speaker 1: So yep, also filling up. Man, if you're a rookie,
- 50:09Speaker 1: maybe you play through it.
- 50:10Speaker 2: But at his you know, tenure in situation, I think,
- 50:13Speaker 2: oh yeah, I think, you know, from an agent and
- 50:16Speaker 2: from a player standpoint, it's a wise move.
- 50:18Speaker 7: And that's why I think Yev says, and I think
- 50:20Speaker 7: he's right to say, is a little column A and
- 50:22Speaker 7: col Um B. If he had signed the contract like
- 50:25Speaker 7: last year and this was like the second year of
- 50:26Speaker 7: the deal, is maybe yet, Okay, I can be out there,
- 50:29Speaker 7: but yeah, I'm not feeling great and I'm trying to
- 50:32Speaker 7: get the contract. I need to put my best work
- 50:35Speaker 7: on tape.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Maybe I'll dial it.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Back, not today, coach not today, David Bethlehem.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Can Ardan block and can ar can catch?
- 50:45Speaker 5: That's the number one question. I think Ardan can block
- 50:48Speaker 5: a little bit. I don't think he's a nothing blocker,
- 50:50Speaker 5: and he wasn't at Notre Dame. Maybe a little bit inconsistent,
- 50:53Speaker 5: but I thought some of his good run blocking was good,
- 50:57Speaker 5: So I I think that there's a little bit there.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Ark.
- 51:00Speaker 5: I don't think he's going to catch very many plasses,
- 51:02Speaker 5: like end the career, Dwayne Allen is like what he
- 51:05Speaker 5: feels like to me, Like if they forget to cover
- 51:07Speaker 5: him in the flat or something like that, Like he's
- 51:10Speaker 5: going to get a throw here and there, you know,
- 51:12Speaker 5: play action and they sell out and they get they
- 51:14Speaker 5: get him to bite badly on a play action fake,
- 51:17Speaker 5: you know, something like that.
- 51:18Speaker 2: So there's a Christian Barmore. He's off on his own
- 51:21Speaker 2: doing some one on one work. So you know, he
- 51:27Speaker 2: looks okay. So we don't know what his injury was,
- 51:31Speaker 2: but it's enough where he's not going to be doing
- 51:33Speaker 2: any team stuff yet it looks like yeah, yeah.
- 51:36Speaker 1: I mean can sign he's back.
- 51:37Speaker 4: I mean I think he's only miss two or three practices,
- 51:39Speaker 4: So it doesn't it doesn't been anything crazy, but you know,
- 51:42Speaker 4: it's just it's nice to see that we're beyond the
- 51:45Speaker 4: heart palpitations. You know, the blood clots thing.
- 51:47Speaker 2: Well that's the thing that's the first thing to think
- 51:49Speaker 2: of when he's not out there.
- 51:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you know.
- 51:51Speaker 2: But the fact that he's out there in pads, you know,
- 51:55Speaker 2: doing someone on one stuff, that's a good sign.
- 51:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, for sure. Let's see.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Chris in Clemson, South Carolina writes in before my questions,
- 52:06Speaker 2: I must give the crew some well deserved criticism.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Ready, Paul, get your thick skin on. I don't have
- 52:13Speaker 1: any other kind.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Fred reminds me of that adduled old uncle wearing socks
- 52:18Speaker 2: on his hands, asking everyone if they've seen his sandals,
- 52:21Speaker 2: and somehow still ending up running the meeting.
- 52:25Speaker 1: You like that.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Paul seems to have a rare talent for speaking at
- 52:29Speaker 2: length without disturbing the facts, while simultaneously arguing with absolutely
- 52:34Speaker 2: everyone over the most mundane point imaginable that Mike is
- 52:39Speaker 2: a master persuader of the completely obvious, whose greatest contribution
- 52:43Speaker 2: is his unwavering commitment to the occasional half witted comment.
- 52:47Speaker 1: It's a talent, really half witted.
- 52:50Speaker 6: These are pretty brutal. I'm not gonna lie.
- 52:53Speaker 2: I genuinely admire how you never let opinions interfere with
- 52:56Speaker 2: the facts. Seriously, I wish you guys had more opportunities
- 52:59Speaker 2: to ride useful commentary giving your access to the players
- 53:03Speaker 2: and coaches, so nothing.
- 53:04Speaker 1: We give is useful. Sorry, sorry to disappoint you if
- 53:07Speaker 1: you're not watching now. Question one, I don't know. I
- 53:10Speaker 1: supposed to pay second skin on what happened, but he
- 53:13Speaker 1: wants to ask us.
- 53:14Speaker 6: Questions right now. I thought our opinions were useless.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Well, I uh, if the Patron's offensive line looks solid
- 53:20Speaker 2: against a normal four man front, but rush, I should say,
- 53:24Speaker 2: but is inconsistent picking up Blitzer? Should we be concerned
- 53:26Speaker 2: that opponents will figure out they can pressure May, force
- 53:30Speaker 2: checkdowns and take away the deep ball threat?
- 53:32Speaker 1: Aj Brown gives us.
- 53:33Speaker 2: At what point does that go from something they'll clean
- 53:36Speaker 2: up to a legitimate weakness.
- 53:38Speaker 6: Did you watch the Super Bowl?
- 53:39Speaker 5: Because that's exactly what happened right in the Super Bowl.
- 53:42Speaker 5: That's the number one question I have with Drake May
- 53:45Speaker 5: going into his third season. To me and I know
- 53:48Speaker 5: you know we can argue about it, but that that's
- 53:50Speaker 5: not an offensive line issue. That is a that is
- 53:54Speaker 5: a protections i Q quarterback at the line of scrimmage
- 53:59Speaker 5: type of issue. You know, how are we going to
- 54:01Speaker 5: block this if we don't have enough guys to block
- 54:04Speaker 5: it and we're hot?
- 54:05Speaker 6: Where is my answer? Where is my hot?
- 54:07Speaker 2: Now?
- 54:07Speaker 5: Some of that is play design a couple of terms
- 54:10Speaker 5: of that as well, but that's it. That's the number
- 54:13Speaker 5: one question because they're going to keep blitzing until they
- 54:15Speaker 5: can prove that they can stop.
- 54:16Speaker 4: Any how many free runners you're see in training camp.
- 54:19Speaker 5: Too many, Mike and I It bothers me every single
- 54:22Speaker 5: time I see one, because I'm like, is this what
- 54:24Speaker 5: Seattle did and exposed it? Shouldn't we take all off
- 54:27Speaker 5: season to work on this? So that definitely remains a
- 54:30Speaker 5: work in progress.
- 54:31Speaker 4: The Marcus Jones delayed blitz Craig.
- 54:33Speaker 5: Woodson just right in the B gap. It's like Devin
- 54:36Speaker 5: Witherspoon flashbacks on my head.
- 54:39Speaker 2: The second question that Chris had with the Colts joint practice,
- 54:42Speaker 2: how much should we judge the Patriots by how they
- 54:45Speaker 2: win rather than simply weather they win. If May handles pressure,
- 54:49Speaker 2: the old line communicates well Brown wins against coverage and
- 54:53Speaker 2: the defense generates four man pressure.
- 54:54Speaker 1: That's encouraging.
- 54:56Speaker 2: But if we don't see those things today, how does
- 54:58Speaker 2: that reframe the question when we get to the Eagles,
- 55:00Speaker 2: At what point do we stop saying it's just camp
- 55:03Speaker 2: and start calling it a real weakness that good teams
- 55:06Speaker 2: will attack. Well, I think I think yes, the context matters.
- 55:11Speaker 2: You know, completing a pass isn't always good if May
- 55:17Speaker 2: has to run around in order to do it. Yes,
- 55:20Speaker 2: we know he can extend plays, but you like to
- 55:23Speaker 2: see the play executed as it was drawn up. And
- 55:26Speaker 2: if he's running around because there's pressure, that's not necessarily a.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Win if he completes the pass. You know.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Conversely, if Daniel Jones does the same thing, but Milton
- 55:38Speaker 2: Williams is in the backfield, then you look at it
- 55:41Speaker 2: the same way. So yeah, you have to look at
- 55:43Speaker 2: everything you see in context.
- 55:46Speaker 5: I mean, maybe like a little over complicating it. I
- 55:48Speaker 5: would say, like it's just practice. Like I'm not probably
- 55:52Speaker 5: not going to like hold too much against them, unless
- 55:54Speaker 5: it's like that Eagles during practice a couple of years ago,
- 55:57Speaker 5: or they get their butts kicked, I'm probably not gonna
- 55:59Speaker 5: be off.
- 56:00Speaker 6: The season's over. They lost the cold.
- 56:02Speaker 1: That was real.
- 56:03Speaker 7: That's what he's saying, unless it's something like that, it's
- 56:06Speaker 7: just so apparent that there's one team playing NFL ball
- 56:10Speaker 7: and the other teams.
- 56:11Speaker 2: So let's look at some of these one on ones
- 56:12Speaker 2: that have gone Just saw Milton Williams. What do we
- 56:18Speaker 2: have here, Corey Dirton there, Yeah, going against little.
- 56:25Speaker 1: Drake May back to the one on one.
- 56:31Speaker 2: That's it Farmer Farmer against Matt gun Cos. Yeah, we
- 56:39Speaker 2: call these the mono amano. These are some of the
- 56:42Speaker 2: more interesting things to watch in camp, whether it's joint
- 56:45Speaker 2: or when the Patriots are amongst themselves, because it truly
- 56:49Speaker 2: is a one on one battle and it gives you
- 56:51Speaker 2: a good indication of who's doing what on the pass rush.
- 56:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it's be tough drill.
- 56:57Speaker 4: I mean, crowd's going a wild for some of the
- 57:00Speaker 4: one on ones over there, which Evan is charting for
- 57:03Speaker 4: us and give us an update.
- 57:06Speaker 1: But yeah, this is the stuff.
- 57:07Speaker 4: I feel like that it's good for the players individually,
- 57:11Speaker 4: but for fans, you know, overreacting especially nothing to get
- 57:14Speaker 4: more overreaction than one on ones in practice.
- 57:17Speaker 7: I mean the first look at officials. By the way,
- 57:19Speaker 7: just spotted one of the stripes I want to ge
- 57:21Speaker 7: down and you want to go out right right, maybe later,
- 57:27Speaker 7: but just an impossible drill for the cornerbacks.
- 57:29Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, yeah. A lot of passes get completed.
- 57:33Speaker 7: And I also think it's you know, the one on ones,
- 57:35Speaker 7: even with the linemen are very misleading. Like you saw
- 57:37Speaker 7: Draymond Jones do this dramatic slant to the inside.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Well, there's other guys there right.
- 57:43Speaker 7: In a real game, Like, there's not a clean path
- 57:45Speaker 7: to go, like parallel to the line of scrimmage to
- 57:47Speaker 7: run around the.
- 57:47Speaker 1: Tackle, right.
- 57:49Speaker 2: I mean, honestly, if you're not completing ninety percent of these,
- 57:54Speaker 2: and we just saw the Patriots miss two in a row.
- 57:58Speaker 1: It's not good. I mean I just felt like it
- 58:01Speaker 1: took uh, yeah, the receiver has a big advantage.
- 58:03Speaker 4: Yeah, it took Eli a wilde to.
- 58:05Speaker 1: Keep going on that one.
- 58:08Speaker 5: I would say that wide receiver one on ones have
- 58:11Speaker 5: zero value. I don't really know why they do them.
- 58:14Speaker 5: I think that they're useless. Like you have help defenders,
- 58:19Speaker 5: you have a pass rush, there's a million other factors
- 58:21Speaker 5: that go into a play that doesn't account for.
- 58:24Speaker 6: But people love them. People, people eat them up.
- 58:26Speaker 5: They absolutely love them, at least the one on ones
- 58:28Speaker 5: with the offensive and defensive lineman is a little bit
- 58:31Speaker 5: more game like I would say, but.
- 58:32Speaker 1: It is good like for the it's it's good for technique.
- 58:35Speaker 7: It's the you know, you get you're running your routes
- 58:37Speaker 7: and you want to make sure that you're you're sharp
- 58:39Speaker 7: in your routes with somebody covering you that doesn't know
- 58:41Speaker 7: what route you're going to be running.
- 58:43Speaker 1: You know, that's what it is. We're watching U beat
- 58:47Speaker 1: with a little spit.
- 58:48Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, left tackle the ninety one.
- 58:57Speaker 6: That's root pick reptich.
- 59:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:00Speaker 5: I had Will Campbell two and zero in his reps.
- 59:04Speaker 5: He looked pretty good. Vera Tucker beat to Forrest Buckner
- 59:07Speaker 5: both times as well. He looked pretty good.
- 59:08Speaker 1: That's good too. Ben Brown looking decent there, so we'll see.
- 59:13Speaker 5: Uh Lomu lost his first one there against ninety one
- 59:16Speaker 5: and then James Hudson on James Hudson skates.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:19Speaker 7: So the James Hudson thing to me like he's been
- 59:22Speaker 7: at guard now for a while.
- 59:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:24Speaker 7: I think they're priming him for just a versatile backup
- 59:28Speaker 7: role where he can play four spots.
- 59:30Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, that's after Kate Wallace was traded.
- 59:34Speaker 4: Yeah, she's happened more and more of these days when
- 59:36Speaker 4: they get you get a report in the morning that
- 59:38Speaker 4: the guy's gonna get released.
- 59:39Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden it becomes a trade
- 59:40Speaker 1: in the afternoon fall start there on. Rupstich has a
- 59:45Speaker 1: better rep.
- 59:46Speaker 5: It seems like with Lomu to me that the high
- 59:48Speaker 5: side spear, the outside speed is not as problematic for him.
- 59:51Speaker 5: He's got good feet and he can run guys by
- 59:53Speaker 5: the quarterback. It's when he oversets and gets those inside
- 59:56Speaker 5: moves that that's not uncommon.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Like sounds familiar.
- 59:59Speaker 5: Will Campbell struggle with that a lot last year too
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: in rookie Minnie Camp, rookie training camp. So I'm not
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: totally surprised that that's his issue, because you know it's
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: a young lineman. But those are to me, the more glaring,
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: decisive losses come to those inside moves from Lomu.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Ben Brown had a good rep there.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: There's Hudson again, you know, back to the receivers, Pat
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: and Whitesburro New York rites in.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: Like Evan to clarify something a little bit.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: He made it take the other day that keeping Booty
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: would be beneficial because Dobbs is still a small sea concern.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: But it was my understanding that they were trying to
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: get Dobbs into that digs role and with Booty primarily
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: only playing X in the NFL, has Booty been getting
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: some reps inside where he could back up Dobbs or
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: would that mean AJ Brown would go inside and Booty
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: would go outside?
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: I think either one.
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: But I look at you know, Dobbs and Brown right
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: now as your base receivers. You know, those are the
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: guys that are your your base receivers and whatever formations
- 1:01:03Speaker 5: you're in, whether you're in a two tight ends said
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: a twenty one personnel with the full back, you know,
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: those are your base guys. And you know, I think Booty,
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: whether he's playing X Z wherever, I think he could
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: be a base receiver in their offense. So it's just
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: a little bit either way, whether it's you know, a J.
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: Brown injury insurance, Dobbs insurance and if that doesn't pan
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: out the way we hope it does. Like either way,
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: I think Booty is insurance for that kind of role.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Is rare it in with a catch, like to see
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: that ball out in front of him a little bit.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: Yeah, these are these are tough as there's so much
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: going on yeah. Uh.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Nick Dejenaro got gotta hold on to that. Twenty three.
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: Yeah, the couple updates.
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: I had Lomu one on one, he won the second rep,
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: lost the first one. Marcus Bryant all so one and one.
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: So those two guys, I don't know how to feel
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: about that, but it does feel like those two guys
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: are in a little bit of a competition right now
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: for that third tackle spot. I think you would probably
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: say that there's any if it's close at all, it's
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: probably gonna go to Loomu as a as a first
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: round pick. But we've seen Marcus Bryant get more of
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: the work at right tackle lately.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Pop Douglas having a good camp.
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I I mean I if Pop Douglas can't win
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: a route when there's one on ones, then right's in trouble.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: Well, it was a good catch too, you know.
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: I just I see it a little bit as a positive,
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: and I know the future is probably Lomu.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: But you know, Marcus Bryant was here for a year,
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: he was a seventh round pick. He's had some development.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: I just you know, it shows that he improved, that
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: they have some confidence in him, and that you know,
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: it's not another late Day three.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Pick that's just a total throwaway.
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: It's a guy that has some value to them and
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: that you know, there's continuing to find out how good
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: he can be, and especially the tackle position.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: You can never have too many of those guys. All right, Well,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: that's going to wrap up our coverage.
