Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Matt Terrill: Former Chief of Staff to Marco Rubio on the peace deal between Ukraine and Russia
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well he did it. Donald Trump has paused all military
- 0:03Speaker 1: aid into Ukraine. This comes just days after his row
- 0:06Speaker 1: with Zelensky in the Oval Office. White House officials have
- 0:09Speaker 1: noted the pause could be lifted if Zelenski shows a
- 0:12Speaker 1: new commitment to peace talks with Russia. I'm joined again
- 0:14Speaker 1: by Matt Terrell, who joined us a couple of weeks ago,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Marco Rubio's former campaign manager. Hello, Matt, very great to
- 0:22Speaker 1: be with you.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Hey.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Look, so a day ago, Zelensky said he'd signed the
- 0:26Speaker 1: minerals deal. Last night the Prime Minister of Ukraine said
- 0:29Speaker 1: they'd signed the military deal. They're saying this because they're
- 0:32Speaker 1: comfortable with the security guarantees that Europe is offering. So
- 0:35Speaker 1: why is America punishing him again?
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, a quick crush of my title is the chief
- 0:40Speaker 2: of staff from Mark Rutbu's presential campaign in twenty sixteen.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Is just quick correction there. But great to be with
- 0:46Speaker 2: you again, and I'll just say that, you know, look,
- 0:48Speaker 2: I mean what we're seeing right now it takes shape
- 0:51Speaker 2: is on the heels of the Friday meeting between President
- 0:54Speaker 2: Zelenski President Trump. You know, President Trump feeling there's always
- 0:57Speaker 2: taken the action that he sees fit as this military aid,
- 1:02Speaker 2: if you will, this US aid to Ukraine. And I
- 1:05Speaker 2: think at this stage, right now, the real question everyone
- 1:07Speaker 2: has is what happened next. I think right now we're
- 1:10Speaker 2: going to just pause and wait and see. But certainly,
- 1:13Speaker 2: I think right now, Persident Trump has been very transparent,
- 1:16Speaker 2: very clear about what he expects, and that is that
- 1:19Speaker 2: he wants to bring peace to this war. He campaigned
- 1:22Speaker 2: I'm bringing peace to this war, and he campaigned on
- 1:24Speaker 2: doing it in a negotiated way. And I think right
- 1:26Speaker 2: now where this administration is at, that they felt that
- 1:29Speaker 2: this agreement would have been a good deal economically, not
- 1:32Speaker 2: just for both Ukraine and the United States, but also
- 1:35Speaker 2: in his own right with service and security guarantees. So
- 1:38Speaker 2: we'll see what happens here. We're seeing a lot of
- 1:40Speaker 2: moving parts, of course takes shape here, but pausing that
- 1:43Speaker 2: aid is something that's obviously breaking news and frankly nothing
- 1:46Speaker 2: that people should be too shocked by. Giving how that
- 1:48Speaker 2: meaning went on Friday.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Okay, what's the reaction mean like in the United States
- 1:52Speaker 1: of America, Because our Americans struggling with some of the
- 1:55Speaker 1: concisions that Prisident Trump is making to Russia.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Well, I think a lot of Americans first and foremost
- 2:02Speaker 2: viewing this. You know, if you look at the recent
- 2:04Speaker 2: polling on this, the vast majority of Americans, over seventy
- 2:06Speaker 2: percent of Americans want this war to end. And look,
- 2:10Speaker 2: the reality is, I think Americans recognize that there's ampathy
- 2:13Speaker 2: concessions on both sides, but you can't get there in
- 2:16Speaker 2: terms of discussing those concessions unless you bring the necessary
- 2:19Speaker 2: parties to the negotiating table and then includes Presidents Lensky
- 2:22Speaker 2: being at the negotiating table, but also President Putin. And
- 2:25Speaker 2: what your seeing administrations say most recently is that they
- 2:29Speaker 2: feel as though this war is a war of attrition
- 2:31Speaker 2: and the only way to end it is to get
- 2:33Speaker 2: both parties, both Presidence Lenski and President Putin to the
- 2:36Speaker 2: negotiating table. I think the administration has been clear that
- 2:39Speaker 2: you know you're going to have to likely see concessions
- 2:41Speaker 2: on both sides here, but you don't know what those
- 2:43Speaker 2: will look like until you negotiate, until you have discussions,
- 2:45Speaker 2: And that's where I think the administration is at wanting
- 2:47Speaker 2: to get those discussions going booked by President Putin as
- 2:50Speaker 2: well as by President of Lenski.
