- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Here's one of the biggest ironies of the modern world.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: We have more facts and data than ever before, literally right at our fingertips.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: However, the truth seems more elusive than ever.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Jesus once said, the truth will set you free.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: That's not only true in a spiritual sense, but it's also true in a creative sense.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: No matter what type of writing we do, whether it's fiction or nonfiction, our objective as writers should always be the pursuit of truth.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: The novelist Wally Lamb once said, if the book is true, it will find an audience that is meant to read it.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: But what does that mean exactly?
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Let's break it down in practical terms.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: There are three types of truth we must keep in mind whenever we're writing.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: First is the objective truth.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: If we're writing nonfiction, this means we should check our facts and strive for accuracy.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: If we're writing fiction, our stories should be true in the sense that they reflect the human experience.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Second is your truth.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: This just means that we're true to ourselves as writers.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: It means that we're not trying to portray ourselves as someone that we're not.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: It also means that we're trying to be true to our creative calling as well as our natural giftedness.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And then third is the reader's truth.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Whenever someone reads your writing, they come with their own agenda.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: They have their own perspective, they have needs, desires, and pain points, and they bring all that with them to your writing whenever they read it.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: There's something that they want from your writing.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: It might be education, it might be entertainment, it might be inspiration, or perhaps a combination of all three.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Well, it's hard to keep these three types of truth in balance whenever we write, but it's essential that we try.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: That's part of the challenge, the calling, and the privilege of being a writer.
