- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:06Speaker 1: hottest influencer and pop culture.
- 0:08Speaker 2: News twice a week. I'm Kate Torver. I'm Amy Torver.
- 0:12Speaker 2: And I'm Sophie Torver.
- 0:13Speaker 1: And coming up on today's show, Catherine Ebbs' viral supermarket
- 0:17Speaker 1: crash out, Indy Clinton's OnlyFans stunt, and.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Prince Harry's Love Island confession.
- 0:24Speaker 1: But first, Amy, I felt sick to my stomach the
- 0:26Speaker 1: other night when I got notified that you had uploaded
- 0:29Speaker 1: a Snapchat story.
- 0:30Speaker 2: And I was like, why would I even be uploading
- 0:33Speaker 2: to Snapchat?
- 0:33Speaker 1: We've been called millennial in the past for having Snapchat groups,
- 0:36Speaker 1: but we don't usually take things out of the group.
- 0:38Speaker 2: We keep things private.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I don't think I've posted a story in probably seven years.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So I can understand why you were shocked when you
- 0:44Speaker 1: saw the notification. And I was like, oh my gosh,
- 0:46Speaker 1: this is clearly a mistake. And I clicked on And
- 0:49Speaker 1: I see you filming yourself in the bathroom of all
- 0:52Speaker 1: places and you had the filter on your face like
- 0:56Speaker 1: the ugly woman.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So let me set the scene.
- 0:59Speaker 1: So Dale and I were out on a walk with
- 1:01Speaker 1: Harry after work and I get this call on my phone.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I was like, oh, I'm mid-conversation. I'll call Sophie back.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Then Dale's phone starts ringing and I thought, oh, my God,
- 1:11Speaker 1: someone's died.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Like you never, ever call Dale. And so I'm like, oh,
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'll call her back. I'll call her back. And you're like, Amy.
- 1:17Speaker 2: What did you put on your Snapchat? Well, I saw
- 1:20Speaker 2: what it was. I saw that it was you with
- 1:21Speaker 2: a beard.
- 1:21Speaker 1: So basically I've been filming videos for my Instagram and
- 1:25Speaker 1: a lot of them are sort of like mum comedy
- 1:27Speaker 1: type videos. So I recently put up a video which
- 1:30Speaker 1: you were in, Sophie, and it was talking about the
- 1:34Speaker 1: reality of being postpartum and how you feel really ugly.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Hello, Miss Pasty Legs.
- 1:39Speaker 1: So I had used Snapchat because they have this ugly
- 1:41Speaker 1: filter on and And I wanted to do this scene
- 1:44Speaker 1: where I looked in the mirror and it showed my
- 1:45Speaker 1: normal face, but the reflection was that ugly filter. So
- 1:48Speaker 1: I had to set up my phone and film it.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I hadn't realized that these.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Had posted to my Snapchat story.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Thank God it only had three views, one being yours,
- 1:58Speaker 1: one being our mom, and then One was a guy that.
- 2:01Speaker 2: We used to work with.
- 2:02Speaker 1: The worst thing is when you've been inactive on Snapchat
- 2:05Speaker 1: for a while, it actually notifies your followers that someone's
- 2:07Speaker 1: posted a story.
- 2:08Speaker 2: That's what it did.
- 2:09Speaker 1: That's the only reason I knew because it literally popped
- 2:11Speaker 1: up with a notification saying that Amy had shared a
- 2:14Speaker 1: Snapchat story. That's why I did the mercy call. It's
- 2:17Speaker 1: so funny because I was like, do I even have
- 2:19Speaker 1: Dale's phone number? And this is our first text message exchange.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So after he found out what I was messaging about,
- 2:25Speaker 1: he's like, What an emergency with a laughing brain. The
- 2:29Speaker 1: most embarrassing thing is the video wasn't just me with
- 2:32Speaker 1: an ugly filter on. I was looking in the mirror
- 2:34Speaker 1: and I was like, my God, you're ugly.
- 2:39Speaker 2: There was audio too. Yeah, there was audio to it.
- 2:42Speaker 1: And a few times I'd cracked up laughing and I just–
- 2:44Speaker 1: I was thinking, oh, well, I'm going to be posting
- 2:46Speaker 1: this to Instagram later. So anyone who saw it would
- 2:49Speaker 1: probably realise that this was part of the video I
- 2:51Speaker 1: was filming. I panicked even more because when I initially
- 2:54Speaker 1: saw it, I thought maybe you'd accidentally filmed.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Yourself in the shower. Oh, my God. I feel like
- 3:01Speaker 2: I'm in a simulation right now.
- 3:04Speaker 1: US influencer Catherine Ebbs has been forced to defend herself
- 3:07Speaker 1: after she was labelled tone deaf off the back of
- 3:10Speaker 1: a video she shared shopping in a small town grocery store. Now,
- 3:14Speaker 1: before we get into the drama, Soph, can you get
- 3:16Speaker 1: listeners up to speed with who Catherine Ebbs is? Yeah,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I want to point out that this is, of course,
- 3:21Speaker 1: not Australia's Cath Ebbs. As soon as I saw this
- 3:24Speaker 1: story broke, I was like, what.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Have they been up to? They're lovely.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Surely they haven't caused this huge viral sensation for being
- 3:32Speaker 1: tone deaf. But no, it is someone who shares the
- 3:34Speaker 1: same name. So Catherine Ebbs is a US influencer. She's
- 3:38Speaker 1: 29 years old, and she's been sharing her life online
- 3:41Speaker 1: for the past five years. And Over that time, she
- 3:44Speaker 1: has notched up 1.6 million followers on TikTok and 467,000
- 3:50Speaker 1: on Instagram. Now, before becoming a full-time content creator, she
- 3:54Speaker 1: worked in personal finance and she actually has a series
- 3:58Speaker 1: of videos where she shares her finance tips. Currently, she
- 4:02Speaker 1: lives in New York City with her husband and their
- 4:04Speaker 1: two dogs. But prior to that, she did grow up
- 4:06Speaker 1: in a small town. So she was brought up in Minnesota.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So She has experienced a small town supermarket before. Yeah. Now,
- 4:12Speaker 1: the drama all started when Catherine traveled with her extended
- 4:16Speaker 1: family to celebrate the 4th of July. So her parents
- 4:19Speaker 1: and her siblings were all in town and they booked
- 4:21Speaker 1: a holiday house in a small mountain town called Catskill Mountains,
- 4:25Speaker 1: which is around 100 miles.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Northwest of New York City.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Now, Catherine had thought ahead of time and she'd organized
- 4:32Speaker 1: a food delivery through Sam's Club. And it sounds fancy,
- 4:35Speaker 1: but it's actually not. It's basically a bulk discount grocery
- 4:38Speaker 1: chain similar to Costco, but it's owned by Walmart. Now, unfortunately,
- 4:42Speaker 1: Catherine's order was canceled three times. So she and a
- 4:46Speaker 1: family member had to go in-store and get groceries for
- 4:49Speaker 1: their four-day trip. Now, Catherine, of course, vlogged this experience
- 4:52Speaker 1: to her TikTok. And from the get-go, the clip really
- 4:56Speaker 1: rubbed people up the wrong way. So after explaining that
- 4:59Speaker 1: her grocery order had been cancelled three times, she walked
- 5:03Speaker 1: into the store and said this.
- 5:06Speaker 4: This is so small town vibes, it's not even funny.
- 5:11Speaker 4: I have a feeling this is not going to be
- 5:13Speaker 4: good news.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I don't even have a cart.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Their fruit does not look good. Like all their fruit
- 5:20Speaker 4: looks bad.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I think it was also not only just what they said,
- 5:24Speaker 1: but the fact that they were laughing and giggling a lot.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It looked like they were mocking the supermarket and some
- 5:30Speaker 1: people got the feeling that they thought they were too
- 5:32Speaker 1: good to be there. Yeah. And for those who haven't
- 5:34Speaker 1: seen the video, it was really just a regular small
- 5:36Speaker 1: town grocery store you'd find in America. Like there wasn't
- 5:39Speaker 1: anything out of the ordinary about it. It kind of
- 5:41Speaker 1: just reminded me of your local RGA. You don't have
- 5:44Speaker 1: to go there because everything else is closed. I don't
- 5:47Speaker 1: think it looked That's small, though. I mean, I feel
- 5:49Speaker 1: like everything in America is big. Now, what people also
- 5:51Speaker 1: have an issue with is the way Catherine spoke about
- 5:54Speaker 1: the produce in the store. So she seemed to have
- 5:56Speaker 1: a real issue with the appearance of the store's fruit
- 5:59Speaker 1: and vegetables. She also made a comment about the store
- 6:01Speaker 1: not having any 100% beef hot dogs, despite actually filming
- 6:05Speaker 1: said hot dogs in the clip. The comment that's gone
- 6:08Speaker 1: the most viral, though, is this one.
- 6:12Speaker 3: This is a simulation.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Oh, shit.
- 6:19Speaker 1: You can see why people got so angry about this
- 6:22Speaker 1: because She's acting like this is some awful store, like
- 6:25Speaker 1: this fruit isn't good enough.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Nothing is good enough in this shop.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And I'm so not used to this experience that it
- 6:32Speaker 1: feels like a simulation.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you got the vibe that she was one of
- 6:34Speaker 2: those people who would shop at Air One.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yes, and that was what a lot of the comments
- 6:39Speaker 1: actually said. And the funniest thing is, despite complaining about
- 6:42Speaker 1: all the produce not being up to scratch, she actually
- 6:45Speaker 1: walked out with a completely full trolley of what looked
- 6:47Speaker 1: like normal food.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And when she loaded the groceries in the car, she
- 6:51Speaker 2: said this.
- 6:53Speaker 4: A crazy experience. An absolutely insane experience.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Unsurprisingly, the backlash was swift. One person wrote, what am
- 7:01Speaker 1: I missing? Is this not a normal grocery store? While
- 7:04Speaker 1: another said, normally love your content, but this comes across
- 7:07Speaker 1: as tone deaf as someone who loves their local small
- 7:10Speaker 1: town grocery store. Someone else added, she's so out of
- 7:14Speaker 1: touch with the real world, she acted like she's too
- 7:16Speaker 1: good for grocery shopping. Now, Catherine ended up deleting the video,
- 7:20Speaker 1: but that didn't stop the saga going completely viral. So
- 7:24Speaker 1: people have, of course, screen recorded the video and reposted it.
- 7:28Speaker 1: There are also countless parodies doing the rounds that are
- 7:30Speaker 1: notching up millions of views. I need to throw to
- 7:33Speaker 1: a clip to my favorite one. We're gonna go get
- 7:36Speaker 1: groceries and see if we can get enough for four days.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Tiny.
- 7:41Speaker 2: This is their fruit section. It's like old and musty.
- 7:45Speaker 3: I think this is.
- 7:46Speaker 2: The only baked beans they have. I feel like I'm
- 7:49Speaker 2: in a simulation. People shop.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Here.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Some goldfish for my kids.
- 7:55Speaker 1: This is like so small town it's not even funny.
- 8:00Speaker 1: All of this looks bad.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Ew.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Ew.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Ew.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Ew.
- 8:08Speaker 1: This was the first video I saw about the whole saga.
- 8:11Speaker 1: So it really set the tone of when I watched
- 8:14Speaker 1: the actual video. Yeah.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I hadn't heard about the controversy either.
- 8:17Speaker 1: And this video popped up on my For You page
- 8:19Speaker 1: and I still laughed at it because I just thought
- 8:21Speaker 1: they were taking a stab generally at influencers just being
- 8:23Speaker 1: tone deaf. Yeah. It reminded me of when Nicole Richie
- 8:26Speaker 1: and Paris Hilton got dropped in these small towns and
- 8:28Speaker 1: they didn't even know the name of Walmart.
- 8:30Speaker 2: They're like, oh, does it sell walls? Like it was
- 8:31Speaker 2: sort of giving that sort of vibe as well.
- 8:33Speaker 1: It was interesting because originally Catherine tried to address the
- 8:36Speaker 1: backlash in the comment section of the video, which is
- 8:39Speaker 1: a tactic we've seen a lot of influencers do recently
- 8:42Speaker 1: because they don't want to draw more attention to posting
- 8:45Speaker 1: an apology video on their own feed. So in those comments,
- 8:49Speaker 1: she claimed that her reaction wasn't to do with the
- 8:51Speaker 1: grocery store, but it was in relation to having to
- 8:53Speaker 1: shop in a busy store on the 4th of July weekend.
- 8:57Speaker 1: So she explained that she had planned ahead to try
- 8:59Speaker 1: and avoid all of the crowds, but ended up having
- 9:01Speaker 1: to go do this shop last minute. And that's why
- 9:04Speaker 1: she was so stressed because, you know, her order had
- 9:06Speaker 1: been cancelled and she didn't want to fight the crowds.
- 9:09Speaker 1: And she said she was particularly stressed about having to
- 9:12Speaker 1: get food for her brother, who was a vegan.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I mean, that would be stressful.
- 9:16Speaker 1: So he wasn't having the 100% beef hot dogs? No,
- 9:19Speaker 1: he was having the crappy fruit and vegetables that wasn't
- 9:21Speaker 1: up to scratch. Well, that kind of makes sense. She's
- 9:23Speaker 1: probably like, we've got a vegan who's very into fruit
- 9:25Speaker 1: and veg. We need to have some aesthetic looking veggies
- 9:27Speaker 1: for him. Now, this story got so big that it
- 9:30Speaker 1: was making international headlines. So Catherine came out and addressed
- 9:33Speaker 1: the criticism in a TikTok video.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Let's take a listen to some of what she said.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Looking back, the video I posted walking in the grocery store,
- 9:43Speaker 4: did I 1000% have a bratty bad attitude? Yes. I
- 9:46Speaker 4: was very, very, very frustrated with the day. I spent
- 9:50Speaker 4: weeks to make sure that everything went to plan and
- 9:55Speaker 4: us girly pops putting all the pressure on our shoulders
- 9:58Speaker 4: to make sure family birthdays parties, family parties, family weekends,
- 10:02Speaker 4: family trips, everything goes well. I felt like that day
- 10:07Speaker 4: was just a simulation. I was like, everything that could
- 10:09Speaker 4: have gone wrong went wrong.
- 10:12Speaker 1: She then went on to say, after watching the video back,
- 10:15Speaker 1: she understands she missed out the vital context that she
- 10:18Speaker 1: was actually under a lot of stress that day to
- 10:20Speaker 1: get food for the trip.
- 10:23Speaker 4: I cringe because it's like my intent versus the impact
- 10:26Speaker 4: are miles and miles and miles apart. And that was just,
- 10:29Speaker 4: that's not me.
- 10:30Speaker 2: That's not me.
- 10:30Speaker 4: That video does not reflect my own true character, my
- 10:34Speaker 4: own true thoughts. I come from way, way, way less
- 10:39Speaker 4: than what I have now. So I know what it's
- 10:42Speaker 4: like to not be able to feed your family, going
- 10:46Speaker 4: to bed hungry. And so again, that like, that just
- 10:49Speaker 4: was the furthest thing from my intention.
- 10:52Speaker 1: This does feel like a very genuine apology. Like it
- 10:55Speaker 1: doesn't feel like one of those cop-out apologies that we
- 10:57Speaker 1: see so many times. I mean, she did go on
- 10:59Speaker 1: to speak about the bullying that she's been receiving since
- 11:03Speaker 1: the video was published. And she suggested that trolls spend
- 11:06Speaker 1: their time more wisely and instead advocate.
- 11:09Speaker 2: For fresh groceries.
- 11:10Speaker 1: So I mean, I actually think that this was a
- 11:12Speaker 1: bit of a masterclass in how to apologize. Well, the
- 11:15Speaker 1: majority of people actually weren't happy with it. So one
- 11:18Speaker 1: person wrote, wait, but this is an apology.
- 11:20Speaker 2: It's an explanation.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And that comment got 18.3 thousand likes. Someone else said,
- 11:25Speaker 1: this felt so disingenuous, but whatevs, I unfollowed and I think.
- 11:28Speaker 2: It will stay that way. Best of luck to you.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I think the reason that people are angry is because
- 11:34Speaker 1: they're annoyed that there is actually an explanation that makes sense.
- 11:37Speaker 1: People would prefer to be angry at the tone deaf influence.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I mean, knowing the context now for the video, when
- 11:43Speaker 1: you watch it back, it actually makes perfect sense. Like
- 11:46Speaker 1: remember during COVID times, people would share vision of them
- 11:49Speaker 1: going to the supermarket. So just being shocked at the
- 11:52Speaker 1: lack of food on the shelves. She's obviously gone in
- 11:55Speaker 1: and tried to film something like this and it has
- 11:57Speaker 1: just backfired. I mean, people are saying this wasn't a
- 12:00Speaker 1: proper apology, but she did say at the end, I, apologize.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I'm truly sorry from the bottom of my heart. That
- 12:06Speaker 1: being said, as a creator, if you upload a video
- 12:09Speaker 1: and people have misconstrued your intentions, you are actually allowed
- 12:12Speaker 1: to explain what your intentions were.
- 12:15Speaker 2: That's ultimately the issue with TikTok though.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Things go viral and people don't know anything about the
- 12:20Speaker 1: content creator because one of her followers actually went in
- 12:23Speaker 1: to defend her. They said, as a longtime follower, I
- 12:25Speaker 1: knew the delivery landed wrongly immediately. We have seen you
- 12:29Speaker 1: be kind, loving, compassionate, and giving. To be honest, we
- 12:31Speaker 1: all have our moments and comments we shouldn't say yet
- 12:34Speaker 1: aren't under a microscope.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I love you.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And I think it's really easy for people to just
- 12:38Speaker 1: jump on the hate bandwagon, especially with TikTok and having
- 12:41Speaker 1: no context. So I actually really wanted to look at
- 12:44Speaker 1: her page and work out who she is. And because
- 12:47Speaker 1: I came across this saga via that comedy video we
- 12:50Speaker 1: played earlier, I already had this preconceived image about who
- 12:54Speaker 1: she was.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I just assumed she.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Was this mega wealthy influencer who had grown up with
- 12:59Speaker 1: a silver spoon and she'd never been to the supermarket.
- 13:02Speaker 1: But when you actually watch her content, it's quite the opposite.
- 13:04Speaker 1: So in a lot of her TikTok vlogs, she films
- 13:07Speaker 1: herself grocery shopping. Last month, she actually did a paid
- 13:09Speaker 1: partnership with Audi and she spoke about how sad she
- 13:13Speaker 1: was when she moved from Dallas to New York because she.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Wouldn't have an Audi nearby.
- 13:17Speaker 1: And in terms of her wealth, okay, she obviously makes
- 13:20Speaker 1: a lot of money influencing. She lives in a nice
- 13:23Speaker 1: apartment in New York. which I'm sure costs a lot,
- 13:25Speaker 1: but it's not some epic mansion. And she often, as
- 13:28Speaker 1: I said, films herself nipping down to the shops, doing
- 13:30Speaker 1: a quick grocery shop. She's also been through a lot
- 13:33Speaker 1: of adversity. So in the lead up to her 30th birthday,
- 13:37Speaker 1: she's been sharing a series where she shares 30 things
- 13:40Speaker 1: about her.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Life that people might not know.
- 13:41Speaker 1: And in the first installment, she listed off all the
- 13:45Speaker 1: struggles she's gone through, which included her parents divorcing when
- 13:48Speaker 1: she was two, childhood abuse, watching addiction firsthand, having to
- 13:52Speaker 1: write her will because doctors didn't know if she was
- 13:54Speaker 1: going to live, and sadly watching her dad die in
- 13:57Speaker 1: her arms. So this is someone that's actually been through
- 13:59Speaker 1: a lot.
- 14:00Speaker 2: That's the difficulty with TikTok.
- 14:01Speaker 1: You don't have all the background information about a creator's life.
- 14:05Speaker 1: So you sort of just make your own assumptions when
- 14:07Speaker 1: you see a video like this. And also- The second
- 14:09Speaker 1: you read the comment section and see something that.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Affirms your first thought, you could sort of go with
- 14:14Speaker 2: it and be like, okay, that was quite out of touch.
- 14:16Speaker 2: That was tone deaf.
- 14:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:18Speaker 1: And the irony is Catherine, as I mentioned earlier, used
- 14:20Speaker 1: to work in personal finances. She's spoken about how she
- 14:23Speaker 1: had to watch her family's finances fall apart in real time.
- 14:26Speaker 1: They've had their lights and their water switched off. And
- 14:29Speaker 1: she actually shares advice to her TikTok followers about how
- 14:32Speaker 1: to better manage your personal finances.
- 14:34Speaker 2: So I actually feel really sorry for her.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, I don't think anyone should be being
- 14:38Speaker 1: bullied over this, but at the same time, if you
- 14:40Speaker 1: are a creator and you're sharing content on TikTok, you
- 14:43Speaker 1: do have to be aware that if a video goes viral,
- 14:45Speaker 1: everyone's not going to have the background of your life.
- 14:47Speaker 1: They are going to take the video for how it
- 14:50Speaker 1: comes across. And obviously she's probably going to be more
- 14:52Speaker 1: mindful when she is putting out random content like this
- 14:55Speaker 1: in the future to get get the tone right. The
- 14:57Speaker 1: thing is, anyone that's giving a hate, I like to question,
- 15:00Speaker 1: how do you feel on Christmas Eve when you go
- 15:02Speaker 1: to the store and there's nothing there? Because this is
- 15:03Speaker 1: essentially what it's like. It is hell going to the
- 15:06Speaker 1: supermarket on a long weekend. Yeah, but then again, I
- 15:08Speaker 1: don't actually think that this is the TikTok consumer's fault.
- 15:11Speaker 1: There was a lot of context missing from this video.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Who's going to go back and be like, okay, before
- 15:17Speaker 1: I have an opinion on this, I'm going to check
- 15:18Speaker 1: this whole person's feed out in their whole life. This
- 15:21Speaker 1: is the issue with TikTok because she actually had shared
- 15:24Speaker 1: a whole bunch of videos leading up to this 4th
- 15:26Speaker 1: of July holiday. So people who are invested in her
- 15:29Speaker 1: content would have known the context. But once a video
- 15:32Speaker 1: goes viral, it gets sent to so many different people,
- 15:35Speaker 1: as you said, who did not know the context. So
- 15:37Speaker 1: I can understand why there is this complete uproar, but
- 15:40Speaker 1: it just makes you think, well, next time a video
- 15:43Speaker 1: like this goes viral, Can we sometimes give people the
- 15:46Speaker 1: benefit of the doubt? Well, not blaming the comedy creators
- 15:49Speaker 1: because it was fucking hilarious, the video they put out.
- 15:51Speaker 1: But that's why a lot of them, for example, Madison Humphrey,
- 15:54Speaker 1: do you guys follow her on TikTok? She's that huge
- 15:56Speaker 1: American comedy creator. I think she's got like nearly 5
- 15:59Speaker 1: million followers. She always asks permission to do a skit
- 16:04Speaker 1: on videos like that that go viral. And she only
- 16:06Speaker 1: ever does it if people say yes. And you can
- 16:08Speaker 1: kind of see why, because there is a lot of
- 16:10Speaker 1: context sometimes missing from these videos. And I think a
- 16:13Speaker 1: lot of these creators realize just how powerful their channels
- 16:16Speaker 1: are and that they can sort of create a change
- 16:19Speaker 1: in public perception. I think the thing that's starting to
- 16:22Speaker 1: frustrate me about these type of pylons is when someone
- 16:25Speaker 1: actually apologizes. And provides context to why they said those things.
- 16:30Speaker 2: No one ever accepts it.
- 16:31Speaker 1: It's like, well, now we're at a state where no
- 16:34Speaker 1: apology is ever good enough. And it's like, well, what
- 16:37Speaker 1: are these people meant to do? Yeah. Because, you know,
- 16:39Speaker 1: you explain why you did something, then people are like,
- 16:41Speaker 1: that's just an excuse.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but the internet's never happy.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I think at the end of the day, she just
- 16:45Speaker 1: needs to turn off her comments for a while and
- 16:48Speaker 1: just get on with producing the type of content she
- 16:50Speaker 1: was producing before. That's exactly what she's been doing. She's
- 16:53Speaker 1: just been doing her regular stuff and there are people commenting, oh,
- 16:55Speaker 1: so we're just going back to normal.
- 16:57Speaker 2: And it's like, well, what else can she do?
- 16:59Speaker 4: I just think you need to figure out other ways
- 17:04Speaker 4: to biohack than to fast because it is making you, no,
- 17:07Speaker 4: I'm not even joking.
- 17:08Speaker 2: It's actually making you angrier.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Indie Clinton has teased her followers that she and her
- 17:14Speaker 1: husband Ben are launching an OnlyFans account, but not everyone
- 17:19Speaker 1: is buying it. Savvy followers believe this is yet another
- 17:22Speaker 1: marketing stunt by the popular TikToker.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Soph, can you bring us up to speed?
- 17:26Speaker 1: Yeah, well, on Wednesday, Indie surprised her followers by sharing
- 17:30Speaker 1: a link to a new Instagram account called BehindTheLaundryDoor. Now,
- 17:35Speaker 1: the account was public and it showed five rather steamy
- 17:38Speaker 1: candid photos of Indy and her husband Ben making out
- 17:42Speaker 1: in their laundry. Now, in the photos, Indy appeared to
- 17:45Speaker 1: be topless and she was embracing her husband who was
- 17:48Speaker 1: wearing a white singlet.
- 17:50Speaker 2: He had his guns out. I don't know if you
- 17:51Speaker 2: guys saw these images. Yes, I did.
- 17:53Speaker 1: I saw them in the outspoken Facebook community. Everyone was like,
- 17:56Speaker 1: oh my God, what is going on? And I must admit,
- 18:00Speaker 1: I was totally sucked in. I was like, oh, my God,
- 18:02Speaker 1: Ben has shared the link. Also because recently he's lost
- 18:05Speaker 1: his job. He's actually in court battling it out with
- 18:08Speaker 1: his former employer, Savills. So it was kind of like, oh,
- 18:11Speaker 1: is this– The thing, the new thing that he's doing?
- 18:13Speaker 1: When I saw it, I was like, oh my God,
- 18:15Speaker 1: imagine what his former colleagues must be saying.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Oh, they'll be going off in the group chat.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I remember when we interviewed Indy, she was saying that
- 18:22Speaker 1: he was being harassed for being in that Christmas cotton
- 18:24Speaker 1: on campaign.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Like imagine what they're saying about him now.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Well, the thing is, so when you click on this
- 18:30Speaker 1: new Instagram account in the bio, it says only for
- 18:33Speaker 1: my fans link in bio for more. And it had
- 18:36Speaker 1: the water droplet emoji, the shushing face and a chili.
- 18:40Speaker 2: So it's quite clear.
- 18:41Speaker 1: From the bio and the images that she is trying
- 18:44Speaker 1: to make it look like they are launching an OnlyFans account.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Quite overtly too, because, you know, all of those emojis,
- 18:50Speaker 1: like there's, you know, people.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Know exactly what that means.
- 18:53Speaker 1: The link wasn't up for long before Indie quickly deleted
- 18:56Speaker 1: it and she replaced it with another grainy black and
- 18:59Speaker 1: white photo of her and Ben canoodling. And she had
- 19:02Speaker 1: the caption, if you saw what you just saw with
- 19:05Speaker 1: the side-eyed emojis, keep it between us. Now, despite supposedly
- 19:09Speaker 1: wanting to keep this under wraps, the following day, Indie
- 19:12Speaker 1: tagged the account again. So she shared a black and
- 19:15Speaker 1: white photo of her laundry door and wrote, The laundry
- 19:19Speaker 1: door is open for someone who can handle the banging.
- 19:23Speaker 1: By this point, when you clicked on the Instagram account,
- 19:25Speaker 1: it had been made private. But I was surprised to
- 19:28Speaker 1: see that only 35 people were following. And I wasn't
- 19:30Speaker 1: sure if this was because she hadn't accepted people because
- 19:32Speaker 1: there was a lot of interest. She shared another screenshot
- 19:35Speaker 1: that showed that 94,000 people had clicked on the, the
- 19:39Speaker 1: Instagram link to view it.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:40Speaker 1: But the thing is I'm interested to see what she's unveiling,
- 19:43Speaker 1: but do I want my little name following some account
- 19:46Speaker 1: that potentially could be an OnlyFans to the couple?
- 19:48Speaker 4: No.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing. I mean, her.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Target demographic is a lot of young mums who, as
- 19:53Speaker 1: you say, don't want to be publicly following an OnlyFans account.
- 19:56Speaker 1: I know my husband, if he, I mean, not that
- 19:57Speaker 1: he trawls through who I follow, but he'd probably be like.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Who's that? Like, what's that about?
- 20:01Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Thank you for counting me as a young bum.
- 20:03Speaker 2: I appreciate that.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I think a lot of people wouldn't care though. I
- 20:06Speaker 1: think a lot of people would just want to follow
- 20:08Speaker 1: for the tea. I'd follow in my burner account, but
- 20:10Speaker 1: I definitely would feel embarrassed that I'm having to like,
- 20:12Speaker 1: you know, that Indy has to approve me wanting to
- 20:15Speaker 1: look at her. I have to check if we have
- 20:18Speaker 1: been accepted because I think now it has about 70 followers,
- 20:21Speaker 1: but Indy also dropped another Instagram story of some more
- 20:24Speaker 1: photos that had been taken and she mentioned that it
- 20:27Speaker 1: was actually her three-year-old daughter Bambi who took them because
- 20:30Speaker 1: she said, guess which picture Bambi took?
- 20:33Speaker 2: Oh no.
- 20:34Speaker 1: She's definitely trying to get a lot of attention over
- 20:37Speaker 1: this and that's why I think it is not an
- 20:39Speaker 1: OnlyFans account. I mean, these photos were taken from quite
- 20:42Speaker 1: a low angle. So I legitimately think that they did
- 20:44Speaker 1: have Bambi with the phone out snapping these photos.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Are you serious? I think a professional photographer did that.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Yeah, sure.
- 20:49Speaker 2: They were like the.
- 20:50Speaker 1: The fact that there was like a bit of blur
- 20:53Speaker 1: on some of the, like, I don't think Bambi was
- 20:55Speaker 1: doing that.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Come on, you're not going to get your three-year-old daughter
- 20:57Speaker 2: to take these photos, surely. I think she did because
- 20:59Speaker 2: if they are all part of a joke, they're probably
- 21:01Speaker 2: sitting there laughing about it. No, it was a professional photographer.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I mean, Big Ed also got in on the action.
- 21:06Speaker 1: So on his Instagram account, which has 13.8 thousand followers.
- 21:10Speaker 1: he shared another one of these photos and wrote, thank
- 21:13Speaker 1: you to whoever didn't keep it between us.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I am now in the doghouse. This just confirms to me,
- 21:18Speaker 2: this is a marketing stunt.
- 21:19Speaker 1: The fact that he used the word doghouse because a
- 21:22Speaker 1: couple of years ago, he and Indy went viral because
- 21:25Speaker 1: she said he was in the doghouse and she filmed
- 21:28Speaker 1: him bringing her flowers and influencer watchdog account Dutch Minty
- 21:33Speaker 1: picked up on it and sent the rumor mill into overdrive.
- 21:36Speaker 1: She was trying to suggest that he was in the
- 21:38Speaker 1: doghouse because he went to a strip club.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Now they denied it at the time.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Well, she claimed that a friend of Indy's got in
- 21:44Speaker 1: touch with her and provided receipts showing that he had
- 21:47Speaker 1: been to this strip club. And it was quite interesting
- 21:50Speaker 1: because at the time, a lot of mainstream media publications
- 21:53Speaker 1: picked up on it and this story went everywhere. And
- 21:56Speaker 1: I think that's probably when Indy learned wow, I can
- 21:58Speaker 1: actually use this virality.
- 22:01Speaker 2: For my own purpose. So we saw it with Boof Hair.
- 22:04Speaker 1: The funniest part of that whole saga was the rumor
- 22:07Speaker 1: that Indy had taken her kids to a hotel after
- 22:11Speaker 1: this incident and she took Ben's credit card and maxed
- 22:14Speaker 1: it out as payback. I just feel like that was
- 22:16Speaker 1: quite an iconic thing. I actually think that a lot
- 22:19Speaker 1: of people still think that that happened and really love
- 22:22Speaker 1: Indy because of that. But she hit out at the
- 22:24Speaker 1: time and said that the internet will believe anything and
- 22:27Speaker 1: man would be in a stew if he went into
- 22:29Speaker 1: a club like that. I mean, I think this is
- 22:31Speaker 1: just the start of her using her virality to get
- 22:34Speaker 1: promotion for herself and whatever she actually wants to promote
- 22:37Speaker 1: at the time.
- 22:37Speaker 2: And we've seen her do it time and time again.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Well, this stunt has gone even further because on Saturday,
- 22:43Speaker 1: she shared Instagram stories showing that she and Ben had
- 22:46Speaker 1: put up QR codes outside laundromats across the country. So
- 22:51Speaker 1: she shared a photo of a laundromat outside Cremorne and wrote,
- 22:54Speaker 1: I'm stuck on a wall near a very big load.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Find me in Cremorne and scan the code. Now outside
- 23:01Speaker 1: another store, she wrote, I'm pinned against the wall outside
- 23:04Speaker 1: the laundromat door. In Darlinghurst, she wrote, I'm waiting here
- 23:08Speaker 1: with something to share. Come find me if you know where.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Another photo showed Big Ed outside one of the laundromats
- 23:14Speaker 1: with a green hat on with the slogan, Daddy's in
- 23:18Speaker 1: the doghouse.
- 23:19Speaker 2: This hat was classic. I actually want to get one.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I hope that they are selling this as merch.
- 23:23Speaker 1: The funniest thing was when you took a closer look
- 23:26Speaker 1: at the QR codes on top of them, it says
- 23:28Speaker 1: big loads ring when wet.
- 23:30Speaker 2: So they've clearly had so much fun with this.
- 23:33Speaker 1: When you actually follow the link on these posters, it
- 23:37Speaker 1: takes you to a website with a carousel of professional photos.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Bambi definitely didn't take these ones. So it showed Indy
- 23:44Speaker 1: wearing white lacy knickers in their laundry mat with the
- 23:48Speaker 1: words coming soon stitched across the knickers. And Ben is
- 23:52Speaker 1: also in the photo. So he is holding knickers.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Well, what are you called? Anties, underwear. G-banger. I call
- 23:57Speaker 2: them knickers anyway. How old are you? Three? Whatever.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 24:01Speaker 1: They have had so much fun with this. Underneath the photos,
- 24:03Speaker 1: it says put it in before someone else does. It
- 24:05Speaker 1: then asks you to enter your email address basically to
- 24:08Speaker 1: get the news first two hours early. So Indy says
- 24:11Speaker 1: a naughty little secret, no spam, just dot, dot, dot.
- 24:16Speaker 1: It also included a link to the Instagram account. So
- 24:18Speaker 1: they're really trying to drive people to that Instagram account.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Which again is surprising that it's only got 70 something followers.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Clearly they haven't approved everyone yet.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 1: And on Sunday, Indie backed it up by sharing the
- 24:31Speaker 1: same carousel of photos and directing people to the website.
- 24:34Speaker 1: The blue tick brigade, just like us, is waiting in anticipation.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Steph Clare Smith added clapping hand emojis. Ames wrote, actually
- 24:42Speaker 1: on the edge of my seat for this. And Nadia
- 24:44Speaker 1: Bartel wrote, hot. Another follower also wrote, girl, what are
- 24:47Speaker 1: you selling with a laughing face? And Indie replied, what
- 24:50Speaker 1: do you mean? It's not normal to have these types
- 24:52Speaker 1: of pics taken with your husband just for fun. Look,
- 24:55Speaker 1: I don't think anyone for a second believes that they're
- 24:58Speaker 1: actually launching an OnlyFans account. I think this is yet again,
- 25:01Speaker 1: another orchestrated PR campaign by Rachel Wild's team from Boof Hair.
- 25:06Speaker 1: I mean, last year, Indie caused a stir when everyone
- 25:09Speaker 1: thought that she was getting a corporate job. I mean,
- 25:11Speaker 1: there were those TikTok videos where she was supposedly at
- 25:14Speaker 1: a job interview. And that was all part of a
- 25:17Speaker 1: stunt to launch Boof Hair and to have Indie as
- 25:21Speaker 1: the ambassador. I mean, Indie is also a business partner.
- 25:24Speaker 1: So that's also why she's taking it to the next level.
- 25:27Speaker 1: I'm actually not convinced that this is for Boof Hair.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I actually think that maybe Ben and Indie are launching
- 25:32Speaker 1: something of their own and they have taken this marketing strategy.
- 25:35Speaker 1: They've almost put it up a notch. Like everyone is
- 25:38Speaker 1: talking about this. We're obviously talking about it now on
- 25:40Speaker 1: the podcast. They have so many potential eyeballs now on
- 25:44Speaker 1: their account. Everyone wants to know what they're up to.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Some people think that maybe they are starting up a podcast.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Indie did have one a couple of years ago, but
- 25:53Speaker 1: surely it's for something like sex toys, lingerie.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Something like that.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I actually think that Rachel Wild and her team, they're
- 25:59Speaker 1: going to expand into the sexual wellness space. There's so
- 26:02Speaker 1: much money to be made in it. And I think
- 26:04Speaker 1: that they've seen that this is a very fast-growing area
- 26:07Speaker 1: that they want to tap into. I mean, the sexual
- 26:09Speaker 1: wellness market is currently worth $ 700 million and it's projected
- 26:13Speaker 1: to exceed $ 1 billion by the next decade. So I
- 26:17Speaker 1: think that this is a very clever way to launch
- 26:20Speaker 1: Rachel Wild's new brand of sex toys with Indy and
- 26:23Speaker 1: Ben as the face of them. See, I actually think
- 26:25Speaker 1: it's going to be a podcast because the fact is
- 26:27Speaker 1: called Behind the Laundry Door, Indy and Ben often film
- 26:31Speaker 1: themselves in the laundry room having like pretty raw and
- 26:34Speaker 1: honest chats. I just think it's a way of creating
- 26:36Speaker 1: hype about it because there's a lot of chatter online
- 26:38Speaker 1: that every influencer and their dog has a podcast. Indie
- 26:41Speaker 1: Clinton's obviously had her own podcast before. So if she
- 26:44Speaker 1: went about it and just launched the artwork, people wouldn't
- 26:47Speaker 1: be that excited.
- 26:48Speaker 2: But the fact that she's created.
- 26:50Speaker 1: So much hype about it, And also that she's teasing
- 26:53Speaker 1: her sex life a bit. You know, people probably want
- 26:55Speaker 1: to know a little bit about what it's like. So
- 26:57Speaker 1: maybe the first episode is them opening.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Up about their relationship.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but then again, I think that the concern is
- 27:03Speaker 1: that people might be disappointed if all of this is
- 27:05Speaker 1: just for a podcast. I mean, remember when Kik were
- 27:07Speaker 1: promoting that they had this epic reveal and they did
- 27:10Speaker 1: this huge campaign and then it ended up being that
- 27:12Speaker 1: they had like Pilates as part of their program and
- 27:16Speaker 1: everyone was like, what the hell? There was like some
- 27:17Speaker 1: Pilates hotline. This is so underwhelming. I think that if
- 27:20Speaker 1: you're going to bring do a marketing stunt like this.
- 27:22Speaker 1: You actually want it to be for something new and exciting.
- 27:25Speaker 1: That's why I'm convinced that sex toys, I mean, on
- 27:27Speaker 1: the website, it says, put it in before someone else does.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Is it in yet? Like all those sort of comments
- 27:33Speaker 2: refer to sex toys.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Well, I mean, yeah, because it's on theme of them
- 27:36Speaker 1: pretending that they've got an OnlyFans account. But I just
- 27:39Speaker 1: think now that Ben's not working for Savills, it's going
- 27:41Speaker 1: to be a collaborative project.
- 27:43Speaker 2: You know, what else would it be? A podcast. That's
- 27:45Speaker 2: my prediction.
- 27:48Speaker 4: What's your name?
- 27:49Speaker 1: Henry Charles Albert David, Duke of Sussex.
- 27:52Speaker 3: It's a long one. All right, Jake.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Prince Harry has revealed he is a Closet Love Island fan.
- 28:03Speaker 1: The Duke of Sussex made the admission whilst appearing on
- 28:06Speaker 1: UK rugby player Joel Marler's podcast. It's pretty interesting timing
- 28:10Speaker 1: because Prince William has recently made headlines for appearing on
- 28:13Speaker 1: Travis Kelsey's podcast. So it seems like he's trying to
- 28:15Speaker 1: get back in the zeitgeist. It's not the same caliber
- 28:18Speaker 1: of podcast though. I mean, the fact that in the
- 28:20Speaker 1: space of a few weeks, they're both appearing on different
- 28:23Speaker 1: sporting identities podcasts, it shows they're trying to reach a
- 28:25Speaker 1: particular demographic of men, aren't they?
- 28:28Speaker 2: Can you just please.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Confirm to me that Harry is watching the UK version
- 28:31Speaker 1: of Love Island though? Or is Meghan trying to push
- 28:33Speaker 1: him to watch the US one? Oh, I hate the
- 28:36Speaker 1: US one. I just can't stand it. Even just the
- 28:38Speaker 1: ads are enough for me.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Well, he didn't actually confirm.
- 28:40Speaker 1: So he was asked by one of the hosts, what's
- 28:43Speaker 1: his favorite trashy reality show?
- 28:45Speaker 2: And this is what he said. Favorite trashy TV show?
- 28:50Speaker 3: Love Island. Do you watch Love Island? I don't watch
- 28:53Speaker 3: Love Island.
- 28:54Speaker 1: I have watched Love Island. There's a big.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Difference there, Jake. I love that he had to preface.
- 28:59Speaker 2: I don't watch it all the time. I'm not a
- 29:00Speaker 2: big viewer, but I've seen it, but I'm.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Not a fan.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Megan will be fucking spewing because every time she's interviewed
- 29:05Speaker 1: about her favorite TV show, she gives off the impression
- 29:07Speaker 1: that all they do is like learn languages or play Sudoku.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Like they're not watching TV despite having a deal with Netflix. Oh,
- 29:14Speaker 2: we don't watch television. Isn't that just a flex from
- 29:16Speaker 2: people saying, well, what do you do?
- 29:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Also, I wonder if the series of Love Island that
- 29:22Speaker 1: Harry's referring to that he watched.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Was was the one, remember Camilla, the real posh girl?
- 29:26Speaker 2: And she ended up with Jamie. She's married with a kid.
- 29:28Speaker 1: This is like maybe season three. She was rumoured to
- 29:31Speaker 1: have dated Prince Harry. That was her sort of claim
- 29:34Speaker 1: to fame on the show. So maybe he tuned in
- 29:36Speaker 1: for that series. Also, he was rumoured to date Caroline Flack,
- 29:40Speaker 1: who was the original host of Love Island as well.
- 29:42Speaker 1: So that is actually quite a controversial admission that he's
- 29:45Speaker 1: watched the show.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Of course he's bloody watched it. Everyone in the UK
- 29:48Speaker 2: watches it. Oh, my God, he'd be watching it to
- 29:50Speaker 2: have a perv.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Like, come on, especially when he was single. This show's
- 29:52Speaker 1: been on, as you said, Amy, for like a decade.
- 29:54Speaker 1: And also it's just a funny show to watch. Well,
- 29:57Speaker 1: I mean– It would be really bizarre if you were
- 29:58Speaker 1: a contestant knowing that Prince Harry had tuned in. It's
- 30:00Speaker 1: like Margot Robbie being such a massive fan of the
- 30:02Speaker 1: show because a couple of years ago she did her
- 30:05Speaker 1: birthday party Love Island theme. Well, this admission was the
- 30:09Speaker 1: perfect segue for the host to bring up the infamous
- 30:11Speaker 1: dating show I Want to Marry Harry. Let's take a
- 30:14Speaker 1: listen to what was said.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Yeah, well, originally they asked me and I wasn't available, so...
- 30:20Speaker 3: Do you know about this? I want to marry Harry.
- 30:23Speaker 3: There's a crazy, trashy TV phenomenon. I want to marry Harry.
- 30:26Speaker 3: In 2014, they got 14, like, American reality stars. They
- 30:30Speaker 3: all wanted to date Prince Harry. Every episode, they got
- 30:32Speaker 3: rid of one of the women and then the final
- 30:33Speaker 3: woman was like, I win a date with you. And
- 30:36Speaker 3: then they reveal it to some bloke from Stoke, ginger
- 30:37Speaker 3: guy from Stoke. But they thought it was Harry the
- 30:39Speaker 3: whole time. I think they call it a lookalike.
- 30:40Speaker 1: A lookalike, yes. Harry was on fire. This whole podcast interview,
- 30:47Speaker 1: it went for 45 minutes. Everyone was loving him. They
- 30:50Speaker 1: were saying, he is so funny. I love it how
- 30:51Speaker 1: he's like, I believe they call it a little lookalike. Like,
- 30:54Speaker 1: not some random ginger guy. Isn't it crazy to think,
- 30:57Speaker 1: we were talking about Travis Kelsey before, that he was
- 30:59Speaker 1: legitimately on a show to find a partner? Where, you know,
- 31:04Speaker 1: now it's like crazy to think that he's married to
- 31:05Speaker 1: Taylor Swift. I forgot that these women actually thought they
- 31:09Speaker 1: were really dating Prince Harry.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Because we actually watched the show. This was back in 2014.
- 31:12Speaker 2: I remember. Did I watch it with you?
- 31:15Speaker 1: Yeah, because literally the US only aired four episodes and
- 31:19Speaker 1: then canned the whole thing because the ratings were that bad.
- 31:21Speaker 1: But then they sold it to different countries like Australia
- 31:23Speaker 1: and they put it on streaming. But I think we
- 31:25Speaker 1: need to go back. So for those who weren't lucky
- 31:27Speaker 1: enough to watch this masterpiece when it aired, as I
- 31:30Speaker 1: touched on, there were 12 single Americans who who were
- 31:33Speaker 1: taken to this grand estate. And it's just so ironic
- 31:37Speaker 1: because it was only a couple of years later that
- 31:40Speaker 1: Prince Harry met his American wife, Meghan Markle. Everyone was
- 31:42Speaker 1: saying this was almost predicted that he was going to
- 31:45Speaker 1: basically meet this American woman. Not that she's a reality person,
- 31:48Speaker 1: but the thing is a lot of people in America
- 31:51Speaker 1: aren't really up to date with the royal family. Like
- 31:53Speaker 1: it's not the same, obviously, as it is here in Australia.
- 31:57Speaker 1: So you can understand why some people actually.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Thought that this was Harry.
- 32:01Speaker 1: So this is Meghan Markle's excuse as to why she
- 32:04Speaker 1: didn't understand the gravity of what it was like being
- 32:06Speaker 1: involved in the royal family.
- 32:07Speaker 2: So does this actually prove that she was telling the truth?
- 32:10Speaker 1: Yeah, in her Netflix doco, she claimed that she never
- 32:12Speaker 1: Googled Prince Harry and she didn't understand what the family
- 32:15Speaker 1: were like. Getting back to this show though, the contestants
- 32:18Speaker 1: were basically told that they were going to meet this
- 32:20Speaker 1: eligible bachelor and They ended up meeting Matthew Hicks, this
- 32:24Speaker 1: Prince Harry lookalike. It was quite funny because I looked
- 32:26Speaker 1: into it and apparently he beat out more than 100
- 32:29Speaker 1: Prince Harry lookalikes for this role. Well, I'm guessing it
- 32:31Speaker 1: was just all guys with red hair that turned up. No,
- 32:33Speaker 1: but this guy actually looks like him. I had to
- 32:35Speaker 1: go back and look at the photos. He really did
- 32:37Speaker 1: look like him and he was given all of this
- 32:39Speaker 1: coaching on all of Prince Harry's mannerisms and about how
- 32:42Speaker 1: to speak and they were told all about his backstory
- 32:45Speaker 1: so that he could be super convincing. And basically the
- 32:48Speaker 1: women weren't explicitly told that this was Prince Harry. But
- 32:51Speaker 1: as the show went on, they were led to believe
- 32:53Speaker 1: that he was the real deal because they would do
- 32:55Speaker 1: all of these stunts. So they had all these paparazzi
- 32:58Speaker 1: that came up to him at one point.
- 33:00Speaker 2: They had fake security.
- 33:02Speaker 1: They had all of these fake royal events and they
- 33:05Speaker 1: constantly referenced the royal family, but they just didn't say
- 33:07Speaker 1: he's actually Prince Harry. Yeah, because they never actually referred
- 33:10Speaker 1: to him as Harry, except obviously in the title once
- 33:13Speaker 1: the show was marketed. But it was almost like them
- 33:17Speaker 1: trying to trick the women into being like, oh, this
- 33:20Speaker 1: is Prince Harry but we're having to pretend to you
- 33:22Speaker 1: that it's not because he's so famous and that he
- 33:25Speaker 1: only wants a woman that loves him for him and
- 33:28Speaker 1: not for his title.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Yeah, but it was probably also a legal thing.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Like if they had said this is Prince Harry, legally
- 33:34Speaker 1: those women probably could have sued them.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing. I don't actually think that everyone
- 33:38Speaker 2: bought it.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Like some of the women did buy in and they
- 33:41Speaker 1: were obviously kept till the final rounds but a lot
- 33:43Speaker 1: of women didn't believe it. Some contestants have since come
- 33:46Speaker 1: out and described the experience as psychological manipulation. One went
- 33:50Speaker 1: as far as saying that they felt like they were
- 33:52Speaker 1: being brainwashed. Do you guys want to know what happened
- 33:55Speaker 1: at the end of this show?
- 33:56Speaker 2: Yeah, my memory is very patchy about this whole thing.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Basically, once it was whittled down to two women, he
- 34:00Speaker 1: had to reveal that he was not Prince Harry and
- 34:03Speaker 1: he had to ask whether they actually loved him for
- 34:06Speaker 1: him or wanted to be.
- 34:06Speaker 2: With him for him.
- 34:08Speaker 1: And the woman who was picked ended up deciding to
- 34:10Speaker 1: continue dating him. I just don't understand how that works
- 34:14Speaker 1: because he was literally pretending to be someone else. Like,
- 34:16Speaker 1: how did they get on their high horse and be like, oh,
- 34:18Speaker 1: but don't you love me for who I am?
- 34:20Speaker 2: Not for all of this royal. But like you were
- 34:22Speaker 2: pretending to be someone the whole time.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I think this just really reflects what reality TV was
- 34:27Speaker 1: like 10, 15 years ago. Like, do you remember there
- 34:30Speaker 1: was that Australian princess show where they were training women
- 34:33Speaker 1: to be princesses? It was like off the back of
- 34:35Speaker 1: Princess Mary. Yeah.
- 34:37Speaker 2: What about Joe Millionaire?
- 34:38Speaker 1: So basically it was this hot, poor guy and they
- 34:40Speaker 1: pretended that he was super rich and every week instead
- 34:42Speaker 1: of handing out roses, he would hand out a different
- 34:45Speaker 1: gemmed necklace and each week it would get better.
- 34:49Speaker 2: And it was always so funny.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Because he always struggled to put the necklace on the women.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Like it would be like take quite a while. I
- 34:55Speaker 1: also loved Age of Love with Mark Philippous. I still
- 34:58Speaker 1: don't know how they managed to get him on the show.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Do you know what we've got to do? I've just
- 35:02Speaker 2: had an idea. I feel like we always joke.
- 35:04Speaker 1: That we need to do Gogglebox, but watching vlogs, I
- 35:06Speaker 1: think we need to do a Gogglebox where we rewatch
- 35:09Speaker 1: some of these shows and put it on TikTok or YouTube.
- 35:11Speaker 1: I actually think we might have the full recordings of
- 35:14Speaker 1: Age of Love. Mum has been doing a massive throwout
- 35:16Speaker 1: at her house and there's a lot of burnt CDs
- 35:19Speaker 1: with TV shows.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Like that on it.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Well, I reckon we can also get our hands on
- 35:22Speaker 1: I Want to Marry Harry. There were some clips circulating online.
- 35:25Speaker 1: So watch this space. But that is all we have
- 35:27Speaker 1: time for today. Thank you so much for joining us
- 35:29Speaker 1: for this episode. Shout out to your husband, Dale, Amy,
- 35:32Speaker 1: who is holding down the fort at the moment. He's

- 35:39Speaker 1: He does. He's been thoroughly enjoying it. We haven't heard
- 35:41Speaker 1: too much noise from him either. He's been keeping them
