- 0:00SPEAKER_05: And what is your feeling about Facebook?
- 0:02SPEAKER_05: I've never seen it for 30 million seconds.
- 0:06SPEAKER_05: In it seven million.
- 0:08SPEAKER_03: He directed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Asklin.
- 0:12SPEAKER_03: Amazing.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: It could be from anywhere, but they've got he's from Alabama, you know, people who do a couple of model weeks and a lot of it will hollow and then that's the minute.
- 0:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:19SPEAKER_03: Or is it now you have to be churning out stuff all day every day?
- 0:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's like I've got friends who like, I will talk about Ponair or something, and they'll be like, oh, it's so not realistic.
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, I mean, you like June.
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much for having me.
- 0:31SPEAKER_05: Thank you for being here, because you also, like you were just saying, you don't live in London.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: I don't live in London anymore.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: I lived in London for many years, and then uh I now live in um the countryside, a little village.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: So um, but it's look, when you move out of London, you become the person who justifies how close to London you actually live.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: So a lot of my conversations are like people go, oh God, you live there, and I go, I'm only in an hour, it takes me an hour to drive in.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: It's an hour.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: I'm an hour from Shepherd's Bush.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Um, and you know, I'll say things all the time like um I've become obsessed with like if I meet someone in in central London, like a friend, I'll be like, um, how long did it take you to get here?
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: If they live like in like Beckenham or somewhere, I'll be like, well, I actually got here quicker than you.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: So I basically live in London still.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: You end up with that chip on your shoulder.
- 1:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it is the other thing of like I live in I live in like North London, but you I still got uh it still takes me longer to get here than it does for you to get here.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, how long how long did it take?
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: How long does it take you to commute every day?
- 1:21SPEAKER_05: Uh door to door, like over an hour.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, see, like door to door in into town.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: This is slightly different where we are in um, you know, the very trendy London borough of Hackney.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, into like central London for me is like 50 minutes on the train and eight minutes on a tube.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: Maybe like a 10-minute drive.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: So it's not that bad.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: It's fine.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: When I first moved out, I lived somewhere where I could do Tottenham Court Road in under an hour from my house in Oxfordshire.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: That's mad.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was great.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: That's so good.
- 1:45SPEAKER_05: It was easy.
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: No wonder you've moved.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, get more space, less mortgage.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: Absolutely brilliant.
- 1:52SPEAKER_05: How long have you been there now?
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: Uh so four and a half years.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: I um I'm from round there originally.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: So I grew up round there and then moved.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: I was in London for 10 years, then we moved out.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: I don't live in my hometown though, because my wife didn't want to do that.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: She said she'd never forgive me if she would also be too much.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's what she said.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: She's like, if I hate it, it's your fault if it's your hometown.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: So we live like I live near Bister, which everyone knows because of Bister Village.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 2:15SPEAKER_05: Are you constantly going there or are you avoiding it?
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: Absolutely not.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: No, I'm not going there.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: Um but the problem is, right, when I was a kid, like Bister Village, there was, you know, there was an HM that was cheaper and all these things.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Now it's the kind of place you go if you want to save a thousand pounds on a six grand handbag.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: So it's just not I'm not quite in the bracket.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: It's not for you anymore.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: No, it's not for me.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Too much Gucci and stuff, like it's not really my vibe.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: No, I can really picture you in Gucci.
- 2:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: They used to have a van, so I was very happy when they had a van, but then that that's that that shut.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: So now I've got nothing there for me.
- 2:44SPEAKER_05: Oh wow.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: No, I've I've never been to Bista Village, and it's like it does, it's never appealed to me.
- 2:50SPEAKER_03: It's it's not for everyone.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: It's um it's the second most visited tourist attraction in the UK for Chinese tourists after Buckingham Palace.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: So when you get the train from Marlebone to Bister, all the announcements on the Bista trains are in Mandarin, uh, Arabic, and English because of all the Middle Eastern tourists that go as well.
- 3:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, it's crazy.
- 3:11SPEAKER_05: That's so funny.
- 3:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: What else have you um so what else have you been up to like at the moment?
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: Lots of gigs at the moment, um, you know, just doing lots of random kind of bits and pieces.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: I've just announced a tour, so trying to at the moment.
- 3:23SPEAKER_05: Oh, you're writing it on.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: It's not for like a year, so you know, I've just put it on sale early.
- 3:28SPEAKER_05: That's great to be at that level though, where you can just like sell the tour and then you start writing it.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, I mean, it's selling, but like it's just it's quite a tight like because I didn't finish my last tour till November last year.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: So like it's that two-year, just under two-year turnaround I've not done before because I didn't do a tour for six years before my last one.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: So it makes it like it's quite stressful.
- 3:46SPEAKER_04: How long have you been going now?
- 3:48SPEAKER_04: 17 years.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: That's mad.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I've been around for ages.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: Wait, so how old were you when you started?
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: 18.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: You were eighty, okay.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Did my first gig at 18, I did so like I did like all the competitions you do.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: So like so you think you're funny if I'm not I was in all of those when I was like 18, 19.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: And then I was doing it full time at by the time I was 20.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: So I didn't have another job then.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: I quit my job and was doing it.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: Crazy.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: I'm very bitter and jaded.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: I've been around for a long time.
- 4:14SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, you've got no reason to be bitter and jaded, though.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, of course I'm a comedian.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: That's the reason.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, every comedian is bitter and jaded, but you know.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: So yeah, 17 years I've been gigging.
- 4:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, fair enough.
- 4:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's like how much has changed in that time?
- 4:25SPEAKER_05: Well, I guess everything has changed, but Yeah, I suppose so.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: Like when I first started gigging, I guess like it was the peak of like Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, all of those kinds of things.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: Mot the week and you know, and all those were at their real pinnacle.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: Um and it used to be, you know, people would do a couple of Mott the Weeks and Alive at the Apollo, and then that's the thing.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: Whereas now you have to be churning out stuff all day, every day.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Like it's it, but I think it's I don't think it's a bad thing it's changed, it's just very different now.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like the powers, the power structure of comedy is very different.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: But um actual comedy I think has gotten much better because um when I was first doing like the clubs, I was doing like jonglers and highlight and like those kind of like very staggy, henny, yeah, and they've all gone.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: And like since COVID, especially, there's loads more like local gigs.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: So you've got things like loads of village hall gigs and stuff like that.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: Like it's gotten much nicer, the gigs are nicer.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: You used to always have like a weekend of gigs in your diary that you would be dreading for weeks because they'd just be a an awful, rowdy, horrible mess.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, whereas now it's much nicer to do.
- 5:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's really interesting.
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because I I remember those from when I was like what 18 years old or whatever.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: I didn't go, I wasn't doing any comedy at that time, but I do remember them being a thing.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, very much a thing.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I don't ever want to go to these because I know what it's gonna be like.
- 5:38SPEAKER_05: And like so, like it's very interesting now that how much it's changed, and I think that's I don't know if it's just the times or if it's the like I don't know what's the landscape has changed.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: I think those clubs uh went out of business, so that helps and then but even then, like I it used to be, you know, you do a Friday night gig in like one of the city centre comedy clubs, and there'd be five stagdos, three Hendus.
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: Now, even if you go in and there's and they say, Oh, there's two stagdos in, you're like, oh okay, that's more than you're expecting.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: Like, whereas there was a point where that was the norm.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I think, yeah, for whatever reason, I think a lot of those companies, like the stag and hen, like who organize stag and hendus, yeah, they used to just be in bed with the comedy club.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: So they're sure not as much now.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and yeah, and it's all like I think, you know, that City Centre comedy club thing is not what it was.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: Now it's not at all.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: So loads of promoters that have kind of cropped up that run lovely gigs in like theatres and village halls and things like that that are way nicer.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: And um everyone can walk there and walk home, so it's much more like couples and friends.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's just I think comedy gigs are much nicer than they used to be.
- 6:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 6:41SPEAKER_05: I've never like done the the only time I've ever had a like real rowdy kind of crowd was was when I did boat show, I remember.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: The boat show can still be really tasty.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: I did the boat, but I I really liked it, but it was very rowdy.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it can be so I I've done the boat loads over the years.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: Like that's something I did super regularly.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: And then um uh yeah, that can be an they can be really lively.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: I remember they're like if they're really up, if they're really lively at the beginning and you're headlining, you're like, oh my god, they're gonna be a nightmare for me.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, that can still be a bit like that, but like it's still fine compared to what that is like child's play compared to what junglers used to be.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: There used to be a gig down in Bournemouth that was just stags and hens.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: It was like a Saturday at six o'clock.
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: And these stag and hen companies would obviously take them down to Bournemouth, and that's all that the gig was.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: And I remember doing it once, and there was a a guy from like Romania on who was been brought over by the guy who booked it.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: And the stag was St.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: George, and the guy was dying, this Romanian act, and the guy dressed as St.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: George jumped on stage, danced around him while the audience yelled, Go home, go home.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Oh that yeah that was like, and you were watching it going, yeah, this feels about right for this.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: Like, this is what happens.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: Whereas that stuck kind of stuff doesn't happen anymore.
- 8:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm so glad that doesn't happen anymore.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: I once had I once left the stage at Up the Creek with the entire audience chanting the word cunt at me.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: Like all of those.
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: And that's Up the Creek, which is a great place as well.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: But it used to be really rowdy, it was like famous for it, and I caught the end of that, and my God, it was and the thing is though, I was probably 19 about then, I was sort of doing an open spot.
- 8:19SPEAKER_05: I can't even imagine doing that.
- 8:20SPEAKER_05: I would have been petrified.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: Also, I now look at it and I go, those that room full of adults, like you wouldn't do that to what is essentially like a child, basically.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: But what's even more mad is I went the next day, yeah, yeah, I'll go and do.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: I went back, obviously.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely mental.
- 8:34SPEAKER_05: It's crazy.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: Mentally ill.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: I don't know how you were doing that at 19.
- 8:37SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: I don't know either, because I actually think now, if I started now, or I wanted to start now, I wouldn't.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: I would very much go, oh, it's too scary.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: But I think when you're that age, like your prefrontal cortex hasn't developed.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: I was like, yeah, I'll go and do that.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: Like I had no fear about it.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: Whereas now I would I would probably be much more reluctant.
- 8:55SPEAKER_05: So interesting.
- 8:55SPEAKER_05: I feel like I feel the opposite for me, but like that I don't know why that I don't know what that's about.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: It's just gotten more confident.
- 9:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:01SPEAKER_05: I used to be terrified of any stage, any stage anything stage.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: I never was as a like as a kid and a teenager.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: Like I was sort of a uh precocious child.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I think now I go, oh God, what if it goes wrong?
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: I'd I'd care more than I did when I was 19, where I was like, it doesn't matter, let's just do it.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: I really want to do it.
- 9:16SPEAKER_05: I think that's I think with me, it might have been the fact that I did improv first and then like was like, well, I failed so many times.
- 9:21SPEAKER_05: Are you just constantly like failing on stage and like you're just like throwing Well improv is a really good thing that like lots of companies use it to like teach confidence?
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: Exactly, yeah, yeah.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: So that's probably why that you you've gone through the confidence course.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: And then stand-ups are all.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: And then I went into stand-up and I was like, well, I already know all these people.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: I don't really I don't have that fear now.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:40SPEAKER_05: It's really interesting.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's strange, isn't it?
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: But yeah, so um, so yes, I've yeah, been around a very Yeah, that's great.
- 9:47SPEAKER_05: But then you you almost went like you went really quickly into TV, didn't you?
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so 2013, so like three and a bit years, and I was but I went into like presenting, but it was an act I didn't plan on it, like I wasn't looking to do it, but I got offered uh a screen test for the X Factor and the X Factor spin-off, and I did that, and then that's how I ended up in tele.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: And then I did radio for a long time.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: So it was like a period where I wasn't doing loads of stand-up, and then um I did a tour in like 2017, and then I was gigging a bit more at the end of just before the pandemic, and then the pandemic hit, and then out of the pandemic I was sort of back properly gigging again, and sort of came back to this side of things.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because the TV work draid up.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, but I love it.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: Like I'm very happy, like it's my favourite thing.
- 10:26SPEAKER_05: Oh, amazing.
- 10:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and now now like now all of your to say to say it, to put it lightly, your TikTok has really blown off.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my TikTok's gone well.
- 10:36SPEAKER_05: It's weird once again, a total accident.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I'm very sort of like always the way though, isn't it?
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I've always, but also I think there's lots of comics who go, I don't want to do this, I'll say no to that.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: Whereas I've never had any expectations, so I just go, oh yeah, I'll take that meeting.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: Or like, you know, I've done some mad weird shows over the years, and um, and it's because I go, yeah, yeah, whatever.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm just thinking it'll be a laugh.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: Um, and like the TikTok thing was just, yeah, it just grew out of one post where I was on the greatest 80s movie moments on Sky.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: Perfect.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: And I put it, I put the telly on between Christmas and New Year, and it was on.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: And I was like, oh my god.
- 11:09SPEAKER_03: And I was it came on, I went, I wonder if I'm on this one.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: And I watched it and I was going, I have no memory of doing this.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Like I don't even like, and I because I've done I've done so many of those campaign shows, I've done loads of them over the years, and um, and I was watching it going, okay, like where when how long have I owned how long did I own that shirt for?
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: I was trying to work out when it was.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Okay, well I got that watch for my birthday when I was 30, so like I'm wearing that, so it must have been this side of COVID.
- 11:31SPEAKER_03: And and I just made a video going, This is what it's like being a Zedlister.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: I don't remember doing this because I've done so much shit TV.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: And um, and just someone went, How much do you get paid for those?
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: And then I answered, I'd never answered the question, I just started answering stuff.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: Oh that was it.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: And then just and then people started to start to watch them.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Because like I was uploading stand-up and stuff on there, but I wasn't like smashing it out the park.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Like a the odd video would do all right, and then it would go back to like a thousand views.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: And then um, and then yeah, and then it just sort of blew up, and we're like 60 odd million views later on TikTok.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: Absolutely this year.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: So it's so good.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: It's been great, man.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: I get stopped in the street more than I ever have been.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: It's so weird.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: Who knew talking about my failed career would be the thing to revive it?
- 12:12SPEAKER_05: Well, I think it's like I think what people like is the honesty of everything behind the scenes.
- 12:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's what people enjoy because they don't they a lot of people don't hear that.
- 12:22SPEAKER_05: And like people are people really want to know what goes on.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I think people are really interested in like the th the stuff that makes it normal.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Like the stuff that is like very worker day about it.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: Like I you get so many questions about like I think one of the first really like ones that really kicked off was someone asked me they're like, Is it a pain to get insurance?
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: Because you're a performer, so it makes it more difficult to get things like car insurance, right?
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: Um and and I talked about that, and like, you know, friends of mine who are like radio DJs who couldn't get it because of certain things, and and like those kind of like bits where people have never thought about the impracticalities of doing this job.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: And even the bits I think where I'm like, I am not a millionaire, like people assume you're minted because you've got to always assume that.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: And I was gonna tell you a lot, but you're like at a very much a jobbing level.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: Like I wasn't making tens of thousands of pounds a show, I was making like a couple of grand.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: So it's that where I think just the reality of the reality of everything, yeah.
- 13:15SPEAKER_05: Just what makes it a normal job, basically.
- 13:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:17SPEAKER_05: It's great, yeah.
- 13:18SPEAKER_05: I find it's I've I know about a lot of that stuff, and I still find it really interesting to watch all those videos because I'm just like, oh, I still want to hear from like someone at your level where it's like such inside baseball, isn't it?
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: But people seem to like it.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: I'm very happy they do.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: Like I've really I've I perfectly I I make them, I do five four or five a day.
- 13:33SPEAKER_05: Four or five you're doing four or five a day a day, I do, yeah.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: Oh wow.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: To begin with, I was doing more, and then I kind of like it just wasn't sustainable lifestyle-wise.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: So I get up in the morning, it's the first thing I do, I just knock out some videos, and then it's like, but it's like I reply to comments and whatever, so it takes a lot of time.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, to begin with, it was like I was just doing as many as I could get in.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: Because they were just I had hundreds of questions coming in.
- 13:55SPEAKER_05: Of course, yeah.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: And then now I've I've even then even now I've got like a list of a hundred that just list them out, and as I as I take them off, more get added on, like it just sort of self-generates.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so all my mates who do sketches online.
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: I've got one friend, my friend Daniel Fox.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: I remember him calling me, we were talking about something.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: He called me, he goes, You're such a prick.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: And then why?
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: And he goes, You don't have to write anything.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: The content is uh people are asking them, you don't even have to come up with the questions.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like Pete, you just answer them.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you sit on your sofa and he goes, I'm writing sketches, I'm getting costumes, you're a prick.
- 14:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's very lucky that I don't understand any of that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: I was gonna say I know Daniel Fox really well.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: I used to I used to I used to produce uh Welcome to Hell.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: Oh nice!
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's a good vote of mine.
- 14:32SPEAKER_05: I love Dan.
- 14:32SPEAKER_05: I love Dan.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: But yeah, so it's um it's that kind of yeah, total accident, but it's all very nice.
- 14:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Can't complain.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's good.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: You know, I get invited on like podcasts and things, whereas I wasn't ever getting invited on anything, so it's lovely.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: I'm very happy to do it all.
- 14:43SPEAKER_05: No, I was gonna I was gonna invite you anyway, because I was like answer.
- 14:47SPEAKER_05: Genuinely much cheers.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: But well, um, yeah, but it's all good.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: And to talk about like movies is great because it's not what you normally talk about.
- 14:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:54SPEAKER_05: Well, this is what I like about I like I love asking a comedian on to the to like talk about movies because they they they're always so passionate about them.
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: Like it's just absolutely, and I think like movies, but the thing with being comedy being in comedy is not glamorous, right?
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Comedians don't ever movies are glamorous, like movies are what we're all aiming for, really.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: Of course.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: Because in America, the the kind of career path for comedians, because they don't make any money, they want to end up in movies, right?
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: Which isn't the same here because you can make a nice career as a stand-up and do panel shows and whatever.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: Whereas there is such a different, yeah, it's such a different path.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Whereas they're all trying to get into movies.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then they eventually do, and then they don't go back to their stand-up.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: Never.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: Why would you?
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: Why would you bother?
- 15:32SPEAKER_03: Especially in America, where it's not like you can get home every night from gigs, like you've got to be all over the country.
- 15:36SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 15:37SPEAKER_05: The job of a touring comedian like a jobbing comedian in America must be awful.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: And the money's there's not money, so there's no money until you're a headliner, and even then, it's not great.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: And even places like the Comedy Cellar in New York, like they're all working jobs because they pay shit.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:52SPEAKER_05: So yeah, they all want to end up in movies.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: They're all the the thing I've heard is that they all stay in in condos together when they're on tour.
- 15:58unknown: Yeah.
- 15:59SPEAKER_05: And that's that must be fucking awful.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but it's no different, I guess, to when you move lots of people move to London and live in a house share with other comedians.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: I never did that, and I'm very happy.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Like living with comedians sounds horrendous.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: No, I could not do it.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: Could do anything, I'd rather do less.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: No.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: I think the weird thing is when I started, I was like the of all my mates in comedy, I was like the youngest by a long way.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: So like my mates, when I started, like Angela Barnes, um, you know, Romesch, uh, even yeah, like everyone was kind of like at least 10 years older than me.
- 16:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right, that makes sense.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: They all had large, they weren't living with they weren't living in house shares.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: So like I and also I was living, or I was in a house share with my parents until I was like 22, 23.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: So yeah, it was sort of I missed the kind of living in London with a load of other comedians, and I'm glad.
- 16:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: What but those houses must be messy as fuck.
- 16:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and also like no one's ever there in the evening.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and like, but also I just think being with around comedians, you get competitive and they're doing things you're undoing.
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: I just wouldn't want to do it.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 16:58SPEAKER_05: You're all going for the same gigs and like you're all going for the same job.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: I'm already anxious enough without living with my competition.
- 17:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, literally, like that'd be horrible.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:08SPEAKER_05: I'm so glad I never went through that either.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: Um, so yeah, you've come on today to talk about it and you you picked it without I don't think did I even send you a list?
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: I can't remember.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: You did send me a list, yeah, and I had a look through, and there was a couple of others on there I would have picked.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: But then I just thought that um this is a film I really enjoy.
- 17:28SPEAKER_05: Like just me too, yeah.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: Unironically.
- 17:30SPEAKER_05: I'm so happy you picked it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: Um I've I've re-watched it for this.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, thank you.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: And there's a lot about it I love.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: Um and the thing is though, with film, I am very easily pleased.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: So there's loads of films I'll go and watch, and people are going, oh god, that wasn't very good.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, like, even like like crap horror films.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, I quite enjoyed it.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't need much.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm very much like an escapist when it comes to film.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: Like if I can just sit, switch off, and enjoy it, I'm happy.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Great.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: And as long as it isn't three hours.
- 17:59SPEAKER_05: Like, so don't get me starting on three hour movies.
- 18:01SPEAKER_05: It's gotta be really good to be three hours.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, there's lots of m my friends who are like real film nuts, and they sort of you know make fun of some of my film choices because I'm just like, oh, it's just a bit of fun.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: So what wait, what are some of your favourites then?
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: God, my favourite films.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: So it's a real mix.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: Like they're like, this is one of my favourite films.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: Are we gonna mention what it is yet or not?
- 18:19SPEAKER_05: We can mention it.
- 18:19SPEAKER_03: It's it's common the best film ever made.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: One I I would put it as uh one of the the best action films ever made.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, it's sort of um what I love about it is it's kind of like it's it's one of those where I think a lot of action films now have gotten too realistic.
- 18:38SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: It's what I call the bornification of action film.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: That is what changed it.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: It's like James Bond, right?
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: Like I, big James Bond fan, um, I really like the Daniel Craig James Bond films, but I do love the ridiculousness of Piers Brosnan having an invisible car.
- 18:52SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: And then Born came out and it kind of changed everything, that everything is now hyper-realistic.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: You don't have those kind of action films where if you think about it for more than a second, it doesn't actually make any sense.
- 19:03SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: Like I don't want I want Armageddon.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: I want to, like where you go, okay, like you have to have a very short memory because if that that doesn't actually make sense because of something that happened 10 minutes ago, but it's really good and in the moment it's the best thing for the scene.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: There's something there's something about like those mid-90s ones.
- 19:21SPEAKER_05: So you said Armageddon, this, and I think face off are like the three for me, where I'm just like, I love how unrealistic, but like so fun and so over the top.
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's like I've got friends who like I will talk about Conair or something, and they'll be like, oh, it's so not realistic.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, I mean, you like Dune, like, and I I like the Dune films, but I'm just like they're they're they're making drugs on a fictional planet.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Like, like it doesn't, it's hyper, it's hyper real, these films.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: And I think like a lot of that Jerry Bruckheimer kind of Michael Bay sort of stuff really sits in that where you go, it doesn't matter that there isn't a trash compactor on the Las Vegas strip.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Like, who cares?
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: It's like what I like, it's almost like improv, right?
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: They just go, when they're writing it, they're going, yes, and yeah, exactly.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: Yes and, and there's no wrong answer, as long as it like keeps you engaged and entertained.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: Jerry Bruckheimer would be great at editing social media video.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: Because he can just keep you on, and like every time you think it's at the pinnacle, something else happens.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: It just builds.
- 20:21SPEAKER_05: That's so true.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Even if there's nowhere to go, a plane has crashed on the LA strip.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: Oh, there's now going to be a second ending where there's a firefighter, there's a fire engine chest.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: It's so great.
- 20:29SPEAKER_05: It's so great.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's just bananas.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: It's absolutely insane.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: It's it's like it's proper fun, isn't it?
- 20:35SPEAKER_05: It's so fun.
- 20:36SPEAKER_05: And like, yeah, I really miss this style of movie.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: And I don't think I don't know what if we'll ever go back to it.
- 20:41SPEAKER_05: That's the other thing.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I think like what I think about this as well is that Jason Statham, and actually Gerard Butler does churn out a few of these now, but they're very serious.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: They're still very serious, yeah, exactly.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: Because this one there's a real it's almost camp.
- 20:54SPEAKER_05: They're winking at the camera the entire time.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: Totally, like all this, you know, the deadpan lines and the one-liners, and like just you know, the characters saying stupid shit, and like they're all clearly they get what it is, yeah, rather than a pretending it's this yeah.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: Like I really like Law Abiding Citizen, right?
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: Which is great Gerald Butler film, but like it's very serious, takes itself very seriously.
- 21:17SPEAKER_05: I'd say like the one, the one when you mentioned Jason Statham, the one that I'm thinking of now that like it's closest to this would be crank.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man, yeah.
- 21:25SPEAKER_05: Where it's just like it's just having fun, it just doesn't, it's not taking itself seriously.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: They're just like taking the piss out of every they're just heightening everything.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and like and like Koskizi films, they are ridiculous, like the Beekeeper.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: Have you seen that?
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: No, I've not seen it.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, so it's a schlocky action film, right?
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: It's but it's good fun, but it doesn't have fun within it.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: Like it's fun to watch, but they're not like, like you said, winking at the camera.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: They're not making jokes all the time.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: Like, and I do like that in an action film that sort of has that, like you said, the wink to the camera, sort of a wry smile about it.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: That that kind of owns its ridiculousness in a really fun way.
- 21:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it really does.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: Do you so did you look at the rating before you picked it or did you just know that it was?
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: No, I I I I didn't.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: I just assumed it was badly reviewed.
- 22:09SPEAKER_05: Was it?
- 22:10SPEAKER_05: It is it's badly reviewed.
- 22:11SPEAKER_05: It's not as bad as you would quite expect.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: Oh really?
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: It's bad, it still fits into the badly reviewed, but it still qualifies, but literally just it's 59.
- 22:22SPEAKER_05: And do you go at 60?
- 22:23SPEAKER_05: 60 is when it changes.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: 60 on here is when it becomes.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: But is it one of those where it's I bet the audience reviews are quite good.
- 22:31SPEAKER_05: Audience is 75.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man, like that's what you'd expect.
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, totally.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:35SPEAKER_05: People, the audience, I've never met someone who did not love this movie.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like my I remember showing it to my wife and being like, we have to watch this.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Like, because we went through a period, even now, I'll go, a film you really like that I've never seen, like, let's do that.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: And like, I've done this, Air Force One, like she really likes an action movie, and like a lot of the Denzel, like the equalizers and all that love, all that stuff.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: But once again, very serious.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: But this is just I think Air Force One fits into this category.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: It does very much.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: Also, a proper actor being a mental villain and chewing the scenery is what they both share.
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: Oh, I love that.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like Gary Oldman in Air Force One is brilliant and is clearly going for it.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: And it's the same with uh John Malkovich.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, John Malkovich is so perfectly cast in this.
- 23:18SPEAKER_05: And I was reading that, like um the other people that auditioned, I don't know how much you know about the.
- 23:24SPEAKER_05: I know a little bit about it.
- 23:26SPEAKER_05: So oh, interesting.
- 23:28SPEAKER_05: I just seen this come up.
- 23:29SPEAKER_05: John Malkovich turned down the lead in Air Force One to do this.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: No way!
- 23:33SPEAKER_05: So there's there's a weird connection.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, what a good time for movies.
- 23:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 23:36SPEAKER_05: And Nickel and the other thing about this was that Nicolas Cage, they ran over three weeks on this and into face-off.
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: So like they were he was making them both at the same time over the last three weeks of this movie.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: This is like Peak Cage, though.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: Like when he's at like the top of his powers.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: Because I did read somewhere that he got paid$20 million for this movie.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: 20 million for this movie.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like that like apparently he was on like 20 million or something.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: It was on course.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: This is when he was perfect, you know, he could do no wrong.
- 24:05SPEAKER_05: So he probably made like 40 million that year, like for face-off as well.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, then he bought like a dinosaur, didn't he?
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: He just sort of buys all mad shit.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: And now he has to make terrible films because he's sh broke.
- 24:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:16SPEAKER_05: He bought the dinosaur, was it dinosaur bones?
- 24:18SPEAKER_05: And then loads of stuff to do with Elvis as well, I want to say.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, he just bought loads of tat, basically.
- 24:24SPEAKER_05: Millionaire's tat is what it was.
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: And it it of course he did.
- 24:28SPEAKER_05: It's so him.
- 24:29SPEAKER_05: Um who is it I saw audition?
- 24:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_05: The two people that auditioned for the John Malkovich role, Cyrus.
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, Willem Dafoe.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: That would have been good.
- 24:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:40SPEAKER_05: Different.
- 24:40SPEAKER_05: I can see it.
- 24:41SPEAKER_05: I can really see it.
- 24:41SPEAKER_05: And then Mickey Rook.
- 24:42SPEAKER_05: I think Willem Defoe would have been a bit too dark, though.
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but I feel like he would have been.
- 24:47SPEAKER_05: I I think he would have been camp with it as well.
- 24:49SPEAKER_05: I think he I can see it.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he could really go for it, I suppose.
- 24:52SPEAKER_05: And who was the other one?
- 24:53SPEAKER_05: Mickey Rook.
- 24:54SPEAKER_05: No, too serious.
- 24:55SPEAKER_05: Not in 97, especially '97, Mickey Rook.
- 24:57SPEAKER_05: I don't think like that's he wasn't in the best, like, he was in he was kind of in his B-movie era.
- 25:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 25:04SPEAKER_05: And he was, yeah.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because John Malkovich was like, I guess this is like when he is sort of like a bit of an Oscar Darling.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: And like making very highbrow stuff and sort of having a great time.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: But I like that.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: I really, it's a bit like.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: Have you seen read um the Bruce Willis film?
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: I haven't, I know enough about it, but like but once again, it's a bit like this big campaig action film, but it's Brian Cox, Helen Mirror, it's just and um John Malkovich is in it as well.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's like that, like proper actors having loads of fun.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: Because they're so good that they can really go for it and it works, I think.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I love it.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: Even in this though, like Steve Buscemi is phenomenal.
- 25:41SPEAKER_05: So good.
- 25:42SPEAKER_05: And this is like also, he wasn't like the biggest actor at this point either, at all.
- 25:46SPEAKER_05: Like Steve Buscemi was kind of.
- 25:48SPEAKER_05: I didn't know when he kind of got big.
- 25:49SPEAKER_05: He said he was kind of like in this the like Adam Sandler sort of films around that time.
- 25:54SPEAKER_05: And like, so he'd appear in like um Big Daddy.
- 25:58SPEAKER_05: Big Daddy was around this time, and then um what was the other one he was in around around here?
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: When's this?
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: 97.
- 26:07SPEAKER_05: Um What was he in at this time?
- 26:11SPEAKER_05: It was really not a whole lot.
- 26:14SPEAKER_05: Oh, he just came off of Fargo, actually.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: Okay, well then yeah, that's kind of his breakout, isn't it?
- 26:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: That was that would have been like the year before this.
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: So he would have probably been filming this while Fargo was coming out.
- 26:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: Um where's the Adolf stuff that he was in?
- 26:29SPEAKER_05: Because he was again, like, he wasn't the most famous person at this time.
- 26:34SPEAKER_05: He was just a really good actor.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just like a jobbing character actor.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he was in Desperado.
- 26:39SPEAKER_05: I guess he was in Airheads.
- 26:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he was kind of like not Oh, hit the f am I talking about.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: The most famous thing he would have done at that point was Reservoir Dogs.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah.
- 26:49SPEAKER_05: But that was years.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: But also still like indie films, like cool little things.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: He's probably like a big inch, like an indie darling in the years, like but he's great in it, and I think like he's almost in his own movie that isn't, you know, it's almost like it's like the intersection.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: You go, that could be another film about this guy.
- 27:04SPEAKER_05: I would love to see the spin off with that.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 27:07SPEAKER_04: Oh, it's so weird because he's so creepy as well.
- 27:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but and because he's so normal, and that's I think a really good way of playing it.
- 27:13SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: You know, like rather than playing it like a maniac, especially when everyone else, like Danny Trejo and you know, Ving Raims, they're all playing it to the max.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: The fact he just is this sort of calm pool in the middle of it makes it a really interesting sort of character that when he comes in at the right point in the movie, at least there's some light and shade in them all.
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: And it's also like you're expecting him to be really over the top and everything when you're seeing him in that mask that he's like cut and he's all like chained up and like he's completely tied up.
- 27:40SPEAKER_05: You're like, oh, what is this guy gonna be?
- 27:42SPEAKER_05: And then he's just so calm.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: And even though like he's the one that like all the others are these big buff guys, you're like, oh, he's clearly the most dangerous.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: Exactly, yeah.
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: Because he's not trying to prove anything, and I think that's um, yeah, it's I really like it.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: It's just I I watch this film once or twice a year, I shove it on, and it's just such good fun.
- 27:58SPEAKER_05: This was gonna be my question to you.
- 28:00SPEAKER_05: Like, how many times do you think you've seen it?
- 28:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, like quite a lot over the years.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: More than 10, but less than 20.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's that's still a good one.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: Like I put it on, like I put it on, you know, now and then quite often I'll put it on if I'm like sat doing some work and I'll just have it on in the background and half watch it because it's just a bit of fun and some distraction and some but yeah, it's it's such a laugh.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: And like it I I it shouldn't work, and I think it does.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: It does, yeah.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: I'm sure other people will disagree, like the reviews, I'd be fascinated to know.
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: Well, I'll tell you the review, we'll get to the reviews, but also like how what was the first do you remember the first time you watched it?
- 28:34SPEAKER_05: Do you remember like what I don't.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: I watched it as a teenager though.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: I went through a phase when Amazon was first kind of becoming a thing.
- 28:42SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: In like the sort of what we were talking about, the mid-2000s, like 2004, like when I was still at school, where I was buying films that like so I'd buy like one flew over the cuckoo's nest.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Like I was like working in a show, like, you know, doing a paper, and I'd spend it on like and I was buying these films that people said were the best films ever.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: Oh right.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: And like maybe like towards like the end of like when uh when I was at six form and like the dark night came out, and that's the first time we'd all my mates were like, oh, this is like a kind of like almost like a kind of prestige picture that we weren't used to watching.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: And my dad likes films, and I just started going through all these films and I bought the DVD then.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: So I'd have seen it in my like teens at some point.
- 29:19SPEAKER_05: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 29:20SPEAKER_05: I don't actually remember when I first saw this, but I just remember like as far as I remember, I've just like always loved it.
- 29:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 29:27SPEAKER_05: And I can't place when I actually saw it though.
- 29:28SPEAKER_05: This is one of the ones where I I cannot think when I first saw it, but I love this movie.
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: It's funny because like I remember um I'd spoke to my friends about this the other day, like that I grew up with, um, because we used to like this film.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: And even as teenagers, we kind of knew that like there was like a bit of an irony to loving it, like being like, it's the greatest film, but saying it kind of tongue-in-cheeky.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: Like we were talking about it going, yeah, we all used to be like, it's my favorite film, yeah, because it would annoy certain people, which is funny.
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: It's great, yeah, yeah.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: But also like it kind of said because like I do like a lot of like this sort of this kind of cinema that other proper cinephiles think is awful.
- 30:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: And like, and I think like me, I've always lent into it slightly, going, yeah, yeah, this is just better than any, this is better than any of your nonsense you like, just to be annoying.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: But I do really love it.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I've always found it fun and like I've watched it with mates a lot over the years.
- 30:21SPEAKER_03: Like it's a really good film to get like stoned and watch.
- 30:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: Because it's it's much funnier and it's very funny to begin with.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: It does very funny.
- 30:29SPEAKER_03: Some of it is all that kind of stuff like we've done over the years.
- 30:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's perfect, yeah.
- 30:34SPEAKER_04: Like, do you um what is your feeling about face off?
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: I've never seen face off.
- 30:41SPEAKER_04: That's mad.
- 30:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I know.
- 30:43SPEAKER_04: That's mad.
- 30:43SPEAKER_04: I've never seen it.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: Well, it's one of those that's always been on my list to watch, and then you just kind of forget about it.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: Or if some I'll tell you what's happened before is I've gone to watch it on whatever it's on, and my wife's gone, we're not watching that.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, okay, fine.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: And then I whenever and then I've never watched it by myself, I need to watch it.
- 31:00SPEAKER_05: You really do need to watch it.
- 31:01SPEAKER_05: Because I know I would like it.
- 31:03SPEAKER_05: You would love it.
- 31:04SPEAKER_05: This it's so it's so much in this vein.
- 31:07SPEAKER_05: It's so over the top and so ridiculous.
- 31:09SPEAKER_05: Because I know the premise is ridiculous, right?
- 31:11SPEAKER_05: The premise is ridiculous, but the two of them are just so over the top and playing against each other.
- 31:16SPEAKER_03: And but they're both I feel like I've disappointed you now because I'm very surprised.
- 31:21SPEAKER_05: I'm just I'm not disappointed, I'm surprised.
- 31:23SPEAKER_05: I'm just completely shocked by that.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: Oh god, it was always the opposite with my parents.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: They were not surprised, they were disappointed.
- 31:28SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, I need to watch it, but it's they're both playing each other, essentially.
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: So it's so crazy.
- 31:33SPEAKER_05: Amazing.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: Freaky Friday.
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's Nicolas Cage playing John Travolta, John Travolta playing Nicolas Cage, doing impressions of each other.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: So love that.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: Absolutely all over that.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: So I need to watch that.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it's um, it just feels like at this point it was like bigger is better.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: Like it's so American, this film.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: Even the fact he's from Alabama, I just think is like so funny.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: It's so funny.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: He um because he doesn't need to be from he could be from anywhere, but they've gone, he's from Alabama, yeah.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: Even though he can't do an accent from there.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: No, he cannot do an accent from and also it's he said it said that he where did I just see this?
- 32:08SPEAKER_05: Uh he travelled to Alabama to work on his accent.
- 32:11SPEAKER_05: Did obviously that didn't work.
- 32:13unknown: No, no, he didn't.
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: That's like when you sort of that's like when you go, oh yeah, no, I I haven't written much homework, but like I actually went to the zoo to look at the animals to write about the animals.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: You're like, well, you didn't do the actual work though, did you?
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: You just went to Alabama and had a great time.
- 32:30SPEAKER_05: It's so funny.
- 32:31SPEAKER_05: There's so many uh so much to this.
- 32:35SPEAKER_05: John Cusack considers this a bad movie, he hated his time working on it.
- 32:40SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 32:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: But then I suppose he's kind of got he's not part of the main bit of it.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: He's sort of doing his, you know, that kind of obviously the Vince character is is being like, you know, obviously like isn't in the plane with all of them and part of it.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: Whereas I think this is my problem with actors, right?
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: And I've interviewed loads of actors over the years.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: The ones that take themselves really seriously are so tedious, and it sounds like that's him.
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: Have you seen him lately?
- 33:08SPEAKER_04: No.
- 33:09SPEAKER_05: He's had allegedly but he he has, because you can see it.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: He's had a major facelift.
- 33:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:17SPEAKER_05: And it's really uncanny, Valley.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, really?
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: Does he look like one of those like conservative American women?
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: It's like they've all got the same like Trump, the Trump woman face, the MAGA face.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Um I can see in the corner there.
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:31SPEAKER_05: Like it's really strange.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: God, he he looks like um Sylvester Stallone's mum.
- 33:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Jackie Stallone.
- 33:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Jackie Stallone.
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:39SPEAKER_05: And I was like, why have you done this to yourself?
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: They all live in Hollywood, they're you know, they're all vain.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: We're all vain anyway in entertainment, aren't we?
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: But I suppose he thinks, oh, I'll keep him young, but yeah, he's um, and like you can see, I wonder, there's a few times where he like quotes philosophy and stuff in the film.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: And I I I was like, I wonder if he's made them put that in.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: Because he'd be like, I'm the clever character.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but he doesn't look like he's having fun.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: He doesn't look like he's having fun.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Um Cole Meany, you know, who's the DEA agent.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, with the car, like he is chewing the scenery and going for it.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: And it feels like John Kusack would have had a better time if he'd have just accepted what he was.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: Lean into it.
- 34:19SPEAKER_05: That's exactly the thing.
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: I also read that Dave Chappelle improvised most of his stuff, which I'm like, of course he did.
- 34:24SPEAKER_05: He's really good in it.
- 34:25SPEAKER_05: He's really funny.
- 34:26SPEAKER_05: And he's so good.
- 34:27SPEAKER_05: I miss this, Chappelle.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:28SPEAKER_05: That's what I miss.
- 34:29SPEAKER_05: Like that time period, you know, he was in like this blue street.
- 34:33SPEAKER_05: The Nutty Professor.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: The Nutty Professor.
- 34:35SPEAKER_05: He was so fun back then.
- 34:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:37SPEAKER_05: And now he takes himself so seriously.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that happens to everyone, I think, in the end.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, it's um it's he's really good in it.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: I really like the Dave Chappelle character.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: Dies early though.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:47SPEAKER_03: Dies earlier than I remembered when I watched it this time.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: Because I I sort of I I kind of hadn't seen it for a while, and I was like, oh yeah, he's I thought he was in it for the whole film, but he isn't.
- 34:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I do I did think that as well, you know.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: I was like, I'm sure he's in it for whatever.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: Is that one of his first film appearances?
- 35:00SPEAKER_05: Not he'd been in like quite a few films.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: Was he famous at that point?
- 35:04SPEAKER_05: He was like getting famous.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: Okay, fine.
- 35:06SPEAKER_05: He'd been in a few films.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: Um Nutty Professor's the year before this, so he's probably, but also like he's not recognizable in the Nutty Professor.
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: But he'd been like, I think he was recognisable sort of in like the the comedy world and then Yeah, yeah.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: He was a big stand up, but not like a household name.
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: Because I guess like Nicolas Cage is at the height of his powers.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: Steve Buscemi wasn't, you said.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: No.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: John Malcolm is pretty famous.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I guess he's been in like indie films and like high, you know, high art films and stuff.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: He's not been in something like this.
- 35:36SPEAKER_05: Ving Raims is very famous at this point.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: Is he?
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: What else has he been in?
- 35:40SPEAKER_05: Fiction, Mission Impossible.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: Is Mission Impossible?
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: This is after Mission Impossible.
- 35:44SPEAKER_05: This is after Mission Impossible.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: Because you don't see much of him anymore.
- 35:46SPEAKER_05: You don't.
- 35:47SPEAKER_05: You only see him in Mission Impossible films.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: He's just making the money off that and living his life.
- 35:50SPEAKER_05: Do you know how much money he makes for them?
- 35:52SPEAKER_05: No.
- 35:52SPEAKER_05: Like it's something like the last one, I read that I gotta I gotta find this as well.
- 35:56SPEAKER_05: It's see, I sort of love that.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: Like, there's a bit of me that it's a bit like this with comedians as well.
- 36:02SPEAKER_03: Like, I think you would never have to work again.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: Why are you doing this?
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: And I think that with a lot of actors, I go, if I had a thing like Mission Impossible where I could do one every three years and I get paid a fortune, I wouldn't do anything else.
- 36:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 36:14SPEAKER_05: So he for so for Ghost Protocol, which came out in 2011, he's in it for 39 seconds, he made seven million.
- 36:21unknown: Yeah.
- 36:21SPEAKER_05: Why would you do anything else?
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just like go and live a don't go mad and buy a boat, just live a lovely life and go on loads of holidays.
- 36:29SPEAKER_05: It's crazy.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: He's making it Why did he get paid so much considering he was in it so little?
- 36:34SPEAKER_05: Because of his like the contract, because of like he he's been in every one of them.
- 36:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's one of he's one of the only like three three of people been in every one of them.
- 36:42SPEAKER_05: So because of that, he gets to like continuously up his contract.
- 36:45SPEAKER_03: Oh, right.
- 36:46SPEAKER_05: Which is great.
- 36:46SPEAKER_05: Good for him.
- 36:47SPEAKER_05: So smart.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: Um, so he's really famous then.
- 36:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's really famous.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: Obviously, John Cusack is very famous.
- 36:53SPEAKER_05: John Cusack's very famous.
- 36:55SPEAKER_05: Um Mikel T.
- 36:57SPEAKER_05: Williamson, the so uh Nicolas Cage's friend in this.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: Is he Bubba?
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I thought he was Bubba.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: Sort of doing roughly the same character.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: Literally the same character.
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: Just the same thing, isn't it?
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: Just the same thing.
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: What about Cole Meany?
- 37:12SPEAKER_03: Is he famous, obviously, the Irish actor?
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: Uh who I first came across in Layer Cake was the first time I saw him.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: And then I saw this after Layer Cake, and I was like, oh, it's him doing American.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: Great.
- 37:23SPEAKER_05: I actually don't know.
- 37:26SPEAKER_05: Uh what had he been in?
- 37:29SPEAKER_05: I'm not like super familiar with him.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: He'd been in Under Siege.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: Do you not really know him?
- 37:33SPEAKER_05: No.
- 37:34SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, he's a great actor.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: He's in, yeah, he's in Layer Cake.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: He's brilliant in that with Daniel Craig.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: I love Layer Cake.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Um he's in.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: He's in Law Abiding Citizen.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: Law Abiding Citizen, yeah.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: He's a police officer in Law Abiding Citizen.
- 37:46SPEAKER_05: Oh, he was Yeah, he was big.
- 37:48SPEAKER_05: He was in Deep Space Nine at the time.
- 37:50SPEAKER_05: He'd been in like he'd been in that for like four years.
- 37:52SPEAKER_05: Oh, what, Star Trek?
- 37:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he'd been in Deep Space Nine for like four years.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: With um Patrick Stewart.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: I don't know anything about Star Trek.
- 37:58SPEAKER_05: I'm not like super familiar with with Star Trek.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: Which ones are which?
- 38:01SPEAKER_05: Uh this is No, this is not the Star This is not the Oh, it's just a different Star Trek.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: There's so much Star Trek on it.
- 38:10SPEAKER_05: But he was in 173 episodes.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: So he was like a decent TV actor then.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he was like a nice.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:16SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's interesting.
- 38:17SPEAKER_05: I I don't know him.
- 38:18SPEAKER_05: I'm not I'm not sure.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he crops up in all sorts.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: He's one of those that like you see him, he's always good as well when he's in stuff, but he like crops up in loads of TV shows, just a really successful working actor.
- 38:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:29SPEAKER_05: It was kind of like what Danny Treho was for a long time.
- 38:32SPEAKER_05: And then he was just like Who's also in this?
- 38:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's what I mean.
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: That's yeah, that's why I brought him up.
- 38:36SPEAKER_05: He's like, he's always he was appearing in loads of like I guess like around this time he was just constantly in stuff.
- 38:41SPEAKER_05: People didn't really know who he was.
- 38:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:43SPEAKER_05: And then he just took off, obviously.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: What was his machete, machete?
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: But even like talking about Danny Trey, the little things I like about this is like all everything has a punchline in this film.
- 38:55SPEAKER_03: So like not even a joke punchline, but there's like a visual punchline of something.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: So when Danny Treos, you know, Johnny23 dies, and they take him out, they go, This one's dead, and they take him out, and his arm is still hanging there.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: Like everybody has a lovely kind of like extra bit.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: It's so good.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: That it doesn't necessarily like, and I think a lot of um film now, it's like down to the bare bones and it's character driven rather than like, oh, visually, this is something that is enjoyable.
- 39:22SPEAKER_05: It's such a such a great visual gag.
- 39:24SPEAKER_05: That's that it just like I have so clear memories of that one as well.
- 39:29SPEAKER_05: And like there's so many, so many things in this where I'm like, oh yeah, I love this, I love this.
- 39:33SPEAKER_05: And like um there's the scene where uh Dave Chappelle like sets fire next to him to the guy next to him, and I'm just like that is so crazy.
- 39:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it's such a it's the inciting incident, essentially, isn't it?
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: Like which is like I don't know.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: But yeah, just everything has like a little flourish to make it like that bit more ridiculous.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: But whereas I think a lot of films now you go, oh well that's one too far.
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, whereas there's no one too far in this film in any way.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: Well, and I don't know how that's possible because they're just constantly hyped.
- 40:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, just constant, and then every scene's got they they put a hat on a hat, that's the phrase.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: That's exactly it.
- 40:08SPEAKER_03: And every time, like I've done things, they go, You're putting a hat on a hat, whereas in here they're like, more hats on hats, please.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: So there's always these little bits that are like just adding to everything, and it makes it like a bit more fun and a bit sort of more ridiculous.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: It's like it's it's proper junk food, really, in that way.
- 40:22SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I really enjoy that in any film, anyway.
- 40:26SPEAKER_05: I was gonna say, like, it starts off, the way it starts off is like this could be really serious, and then it immediately breaks it with Nicolas Cage because it he um so it starts off with the scene where uh He kills a man, he kills a man, and it's really it's really intense and serious, but then it cuts to him and he just goes, like this, just into the camera, and it's so over the top, it's so good, and like, but it's even the fact of going, Oh my god, like you notice little things like why is he getting into the bar on a boat?
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: And also in America, they love the troops, ma'am.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: Oh, they love the troops.
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: So the fact that these guys are like, fuck you, army boy, yeah, and you go, okay, yep, lovely.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: Like, but and you go, and what I love about it as well is it's just so crowbared in at the beginning of like, he's a good guy.
- 41:12SPEAKER_05: He's a good guy, yeah.
- 41:13SPEAKER_03: This is a great guy.
- 41:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's lethal, but he's a great guy.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: Like, look at him with his lovely wife and his, you know, um the basically one of the only two women in it.
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: Um the third woman is a very homophobic character, which you know is uh is one of the things that I suppose is a 90s throwback.
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it's like it's all about him being like this guy in like even in the cell, like I love it when he's in prison, because it's like there's a riot happening.
- 41:38SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: There's a prison riot, and he's doing like learn Spanish.
- 41:42SPEAKER_05: And there's like a big fire behind him, and he's just like lying there.
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, like with his Spanish, with his Spanish book going and going, uh, no, no, education for me over chaos, thank you.
- 41:52SPEAKER_03: Just like everything about him, you're like, oh yeah, we get it.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: We totally get what you're doing here.
- 41:56SPEAKER_03: There's no subtlety to it.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: They might as well have been reading a book going, How to be a good guy in action movie.
- 42:03SPEAKER_05: It's so funny.
- 42:04SPEAKER_05: But then it's also like it also hints at like his lethal side uh at the start because she goes to him, oh, just um, I don't want that side of you coming out again.
- 42:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like it's it's so sort of crowbar, isn't it?
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: Going, don't be that guy, you know.
- 42:20SPEAKER_03: And um, and even when the judge, when he goes to prison and the judge is going, because you are a lethal weapon, it's like you don't need to say we know what being in the army is.
- 42:29SPEAKER_03: We saw what you just did.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: We know that if you're in the army, that you are dangerous because you've been trained, but they they really lay it on thick.
- 42:36SPEAKER_03: And I just love that.
- 42:36SPEAKER_03: You're like, yep, lovely.
- 42:37SPEAKER_03: There's gonna be no subtext here.
- 42:40SPEAKER_03: Just give it to me proper.
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: Do you know that this was directed by an Englishman?
- 42:45SPEAKER_03: I did know that.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: Who um this was his first movie.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: It's isn't that crazy?
- 42:49SPEAKER_03: Do you want to do you wanna know the one fact I know about him?
- 42:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, go on.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Um, he directed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: Amazing.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: He was a music video director and he did ads, but he did Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley.
- 43:00SPEAKER_05: That's great.
- 43:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 43:02SPEAKER_05: That's so funny.
- 43:03SPEAKER_05: And to go from that to this, and then he like he just went like, I can't believe this is his first movie.
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: What did he what else did he do after this?
- 43:10SPEAKER_03: Did he stay in this action world?
- 43:12SPEAKER_05: He did Tomb Raider, the first Tomb Raider.
- 43:14SPEAKER_05: No way! Yeah.
- 43:15SPEAKER_05: And then he did he did stay in the action world.
- 43:19SPEAKER_05: Um, let me pull them up.
- 43:22SPEAKER_05: So his name's Simon West.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: He And is he still making stuff?
- 43:27SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, he is.
- 43:29SPEAKER_05: He did Tomb Raider, he did The General's Daughter the year uh right after this, which is a Travolta film.
- 43:34SPEAKER_03: I've never seen that.
- 43:35SPEAKER_05: I've not seen it either.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: Then he went, then he did Tomb Raider, then he did a horror film called When a Stranger Calls.
- 43:41SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: Then he went back, then it seems he went back to action movies.
- 43:44SPEAKER_05: He did The Mechanic, The Expendables 2, and uh just a bunch of like Slocky B movies.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: Now he's he's sort of doing a lot of B movie stuff now.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: A lot of action though.
- 43:54SPEAKER_05: Ride Hard Ride Hard.
- 43:57SPEAKER_03: Ride Hard is his latest.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: What is that?
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: I've heard of it.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: I don't know anything of other.
- 44:02SPEAKER_03: It's an action comedy with a 23 matter score.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 44:05SPEAKER_05: With Reva Wilson.
- 44:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:08SPEAKER_03: Anna Chumpsley from Veeep.
- 44:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's like, yeah.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:13SPEAKER_05: Oh, poor guy.
- 44:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm sure he's had a very nice career and he's got a lovely house.
- 44:17SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: That's all that matters.
- 44:18SPEAKER_05: He also produced Black Hawk Down.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, did he?
- 44:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 44:21unknown: Great.
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: That's a very serious film.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it's it's fun, and I think um, yeah, it's just well, I also know that on the script, you know, JJ Abrams punched it up.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say this.
- 44:31SPEAKER_03: A lot of the jokes of J.J.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: Abrams.
- 44:33SPEAKER_05: That that blows my mind.
- 44:34SPEAKER_05: I only found that out today.
- 44:35SPEAKER_05: That blows my mind that J.J.
- 44:36SPEAKER_05: Abrams.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: But I think he was doing a lot of like Jerry Bruckheimer stuff and touchstone who are Disney, and then he made obviously lost.
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: But yeah, like he would go in and just like add some jokes and some lines and and um he did a lot of ghostwriting.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:50SPEAKER_05: He did a lot, and I always find that really interesting when you see someone that's done a lot of ghostwriting um on stuff.
- 44:56SPEAKER_05: There's um so Demi Idiji Webe, um, is this American comedian that came on here, he was talking about how he made a joke on so he came on to defend Space Jam.
- 45:06SPEAKER_05: And the thing that he did was he made a joke on his letterbox about how he did punch up on uh the new Space Jam, and everyone believed it.
- 45:14SPEAKER_05: And he had to come out and be like, guys, I didn't like obviously I'm joking because he was like, I tried to sh I try kept trying to get this stuff in about um I can't remember what he said, but he kept like I kept trying to get this stuff in, and then the director yelled at me.
- 45:26SPEAKER_05: I'm like, obviously that's not true.
- 45:27SPEAKER_05: Why would I write that in my letterbox preview?
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: That's fair.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, it's like he was like a real kind of like Hollywood wonder kid, wasn't he?
- 45:35SPEAKER_03: So he's very young, a bit like Josh Joss Whedon used to do a lot of this, didn't he?
- 45:39SPEAKER_03: Loads of films where Joss Whedon came in and like fixed them.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like Toy Story.
- 45:43SPEAKER_03: I didn't know that.
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:45SPEAKER_03: I didn't know that at all.
- 45:46SPEAKER_03: But yeah, he was very much one of those, and I think like that and a lot of that kind of stuff that is added that you can tell is like a flourish is really nice in this film.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: Whereas sometimes it feels a bit much, but I love it, it doesn't matter in this movie.
- 45:58SPEAKER_05: It's his kitchen sinks.
- 46:00SPEAKER_05: It really is they get away with everything, but whatever they want to do in this movie, they get away with.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: I the thing one of my favourite things about this movie is Nicolas Cage's hair.
- 46:09SPEAKER_05: It's ridiculous, isn't it?
- 46:10SPEAKER_05: It's so ridiculous.
- 46:11SPEAKER_03: Do you know he's meant to have a beard as well to begin with, and they made him shave it off on the first day.
- 46:15SPEAKER_03: He wanted a beard and the hair.
- 46:17SPEAKER_05: That's so much funnier, though.
- 46:18SPEAKER_05: It's so much funnier than it's like.
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: And apparently he was devastated and was like, I've lost the character because I've got I've got no beards.
- 46:24SPEAKER_05: It's so much funnier without the beard.
- 46:26SPEAKER_05: It just makes him look, it just makes him look insane.
- 46:28SPEAKER_03: The hair is mad, and like it's um obviously because he's got a real widow's peak, Nicolas Cage, as well, and you just think it just couldn't be worse.
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: And he's and it's like he's I don't think Nicolas Cage is a bad looking guy, right?
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: And he's ripped in this film.
- 46:42SPEAKER_03: He's so ripped in this film, and he's got the hair of a serial killer, like who lives with his mum.
- 46:47SPEAKER_03: Like it's such a weird choice.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: But apparently, like they didn't like it, and he went, No, I'm having you, I'm not having a beard, I'm keeping the hair.
- 46:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 46:55SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's so funny.
- 46:56SPEAKER_05: You would think they'd go, keep the beard, get get rid of the hair.
- 46:59SPEAKER_05: That's what you're doing.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: No, no, because I I read it, I read an interview with um Jerry Bruckheimer, yeah, who said that you don't pay a Nicolas Cage 20 million dollars and then cover his face up.
- 47:09SPEAKER_03: He's like, You've paid the money you're having Nicolas Cage like Nicolas Cage.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: That's so true.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:14SPEAKER_03: Whereas obviously now, uh you know, it's all about like like even in Digger at the moment, Tom Cruise, it's like, how can we make them not look like them?
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: Whereas back then it's like, no, no, they're the they're the star of the movie, they need to look like the star of the movie.
- 47:25SPEAKER_05: Because that that's something that has changed now, is like you don't even I guess Tom Cruise was kind of the like the last one for this, but you don't get the the star on the poster anymore, and that and that that's what's bringing in people.
- 47:35SPEAKER_05: The movie is what brings in the play.
- 47:37SPEAKER_05: Or the franchise or the iPhone.
- 47:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the IP.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: But you need Nicolas Cage on the poster looking like Nicolas Cage.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: And also, I suppose this is the day before you didn't see trailers on your phone all the time, so you could work it out.
- 47:47SPEAKER_03: Like you just went, oh, that's a Nicolas Cage film.
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: And there's a plane behind him, and they're all in prison clothes.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: I know what that film is.
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: Like it was a real kind of like skill to get it all on the post.
- 47:56SPEAKER_05: Also, the title is perfect, con air.
- 47:58SPEAKER_05: Like that's that tells you everything you need to know.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: Great.
- 48:00SPEAKER_05: Tells you everything.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: It's perfect.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: It's just it's the thing with it, is as well, is I think the reason it's so good is because it isn't trying to be something else.
- 48:09SPEAKER_03: Like I think a lot of films get lost in well, we want to be, you know, a bit more serious or we want to make a point.
- 48:14SPEAKER_03: Whereas this is make like nothing in this film, no one learns a lesson.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: No one like has a moment where they go, Oh, I've become a better person from this.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: No, everyone ends up exactly where they started, pretty much.
- 48:26SPEAKER_05: It's like it defies all rules of storytelling.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: Because I think it is, it's it's like, it's almost like there is no overarching thing.
- 48:35SPEAKER_03: It is genuinely scene by scene where they're going, what will make this scene not even the best it can be?
- 48:42SPEAKER_03: What will make this scene cool as fuck?
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: Like they don't give a shit about anything, but like, how can we make this as cool as possible?
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like a 15-year-old boy was there going, not cool enough.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: Oh what, he's gonna have a real moment of redemption.
- 48:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, kill him.
- 48:57SPEAKER_03: Like, that's what it feels like with this film.
- 48:59SPEAKER_03: Like, there's no kind of and there's no thought about like the end.
- 49:03SPEAKER_03: Like, it feels like they're just trying to get to the next moment and they don't give a shit about where it's gonna end up.
- 49:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 49:10SPEAKER_05: Because also the other thing you were talking about this about like the ending, but like you would think the ending is the cr the plane crashing onto the Vegas strip.
- 49:17SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, but there's that's what that's what makes sense logically.
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: But they wrap it all up, like you know, his mate gets Bubba gets saved, and like he's with his wife, he's got the you know, all of these things happen.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: You go, oh, it's the end of the movie, and then there's another 15 minutes of movie.
- 49:29SPEAKER_03: There's like an extra little movie on the end of the movie.
- 49:31SPEAKER_05: But I forgot about that last bit.
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: Because you could have just killed Cyrus in the plane crash.
- 49:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: Or he could have like got, you know, try like you could you didn't need it's almost like they had leftover money.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: That's what it feels like.
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: No, of course they didn't, but it feels like they've gone we've got 10 million here, and if we don't spend it, we don't we don't get to make another film.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: So like get a fucking fire truck.
- 49:51SPEAKER_03: What did this cost?
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: It cost 75 in 97.
- 49:55SPEAKER_05: In 97, and it grossed 224.
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: Nice.
- 49:58SPEAKER_05: So it did very well.
- 49:59SPEAKER_05: But it but it just didn't get reviewed well.
- 50:01SPEAKER_05: It just didn't, well, again, it like got middling reviews.
- 50:04SPEAKER_05: So what are the reviews then?
- 50:05SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 50:06SPEAKER_05: So let me see the reviews now.
- 50:08SPEAKER_05: So it's it's 59%, as I said.
- 50:11SPEAKER_05: Like you said right on the edge.
- 50:13SPEAKER_05: Right on the edge.
- 50:14SPEAKER_05: Uh so it the thing is, like, a lot of them a lot of the reviews that have come out since then, like all the all the they're all good.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, people have really in in retrospect.
- 50:26SPEAKER_05: In retrospect, yeah.
- 50:27SPEAKER_05: Which is I I see that a lot now with all these movies where that people come on and defend.
- 50:31SPEAKER_05: It's like in retrospect, people actually enjoy it.
- 50:33SPEAKER_05: People really enjoy it.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: And it did well at the box office, so it wasn't like it wasn't enjoyed at the time.
- 50:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm trying to find the old ones.
- 50:39SPEAKER_05: Um from around the time.
- 50:43SPEAKER_05: Wow, there's one here that says, like, you have to wonder where we stand as a society when something like Conair passes for entertainment.
- 50:49SPEAKER_05: That's a crazy thing to say.
- 50:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean why do they can you did why did it why what was wrong with it though?
- 50:58SPEAKER_03: Like, why is that about society?
- 51:00SPEAKER_03: Um Like the problem is, I think, is uh I have this issue with comedy reviewers.
- 51:05SPEAKER_03: They've seen too much.
- 51:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yes.
- 51:07SPEAKER_03: Like the things, the things that comedy reviews are really like when Edinburgh's on and there are people getting good reviews, I'm like, I've never seen them get a laugh.
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but they're doing something, you know, that they they're doing this mime interpretation of something.
- 51:17SPEAKER_03: And comedy reviews have seen thousands and thousands of comedians who are like, oh, it's different.
- 51:21SPEAKER_03: Whereas actually sometimes life is hard, you want to switch off.
- 51:25SPEAKER_03: And like Conair is the perfect, put your brain on standby and enjoy film.
- 51:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 51:30SPEAKER_05: Conair is the thing, is the sort of movie that would get two stars in Edinburgh.
- 51:36SPEAKER_05: Totally.
- 51:36SPEAKER_05: It's it would get two stars in Edinburgh and you'd be like, but people are enjoying it all.
- 51:40SPEAKER_05: Conair is Paul Smith, right?
- 51:42SPEAKER_03: In that like reviewers in the industry turn their nose up at him, but he's selling hundreds of thousands of tickets and he's smashing it.
- 51:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 51:49SPEAKER_03: Like, there's this kind of like, and this happens in all arts, I suppose, where like there's this high browfication of it.
- 51:55SPEAKER_03: And it's the same with fucking actors, right?
- 51:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: Who are like, um, especially when it's like method, and they're like, well, I have to really immerse myself in.
- 52:02SPEAKER_03: You're like, you're doing a bit of pretend, yeah, like get over yourselves.
- 52:05SPEAKER_03: But we're trying to make everything deeper than it needs to be.
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: And we don't need it anymore because the world is already deep.
- 52:10SPEAKER_03: The world is complicated.
- 52:11SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: We need simple rather than you know, all these films where you go, oh yeah, like, you know, a mad film, like, and it's a film I quite like.
- 52:19SPEAKER_03: So I'm I'm using it as an example, but like The Lobster by Yorgos Lanthus Lantham.
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: It's very high concept.
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:27SPEAKER_03: And like I liked it, but I didn't I liked it, but I didn't enjoy it in the same way I enjoy this.
- 52:33SPEAKER_05: Totally, totally.
- 52:34SPEAKER_03: Where I'm like, totally like, what next?
- 52:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know.
- 52:37SPEAKER_05: You're like on the edge of your seat for this.
- 52:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 52:39SPEAKER_05: But the lobster, you're like, this is good, but I'm not gonna be on the edge of my seat for it.
- 52:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like it's it's sort of like it's almost like enjoyable homework.
- 52:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:48SPEAKER_03: Whereas, you know, you're doing those homework for the subject you like, whereas this is going to the park with your friends and fucking around.
- 52:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 52:55SPEAKER_05: God, like the movie sends two mean-spirited messages.
- 53:00SPEAKER_05: One is that bad criminals are no better than animals and should be treated accordingly accordingly.
- 53:04SPEAKER_05: The other is that hatred, mayhem, and destruction are rip-raw ingredi ingredients for summer entertainment.
- 53:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 53:11SPEAKER_03: Like, but also, it's a film.
- 53:14SPEAKER_05: It's a film, it's a c it's a comedy action film.
- 53:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like it's it's not it's the everything is broad brush strokes in it.
- 53:22SPEAKER_03: Like it's and I think the thing is as well, it's not like and this does happen in films, you know, where like you go, okay, well, all of the characters are really well developed, apart from the criminal.
- 53:31SPEAKER_03: So then they're making a point.
- 53:32SPEAKER_03: Whereas when you're like, they haven't thought about any of this.
- 53:36SPEAKER_03: Like the character, the character descriptions in the script must have been a line and a half.
- 53:40SPEAKER_03: That's all it matters.
- 53:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 53:42SPEAKER_03: But but you know, and I think there's a lot of films where they go, they're not very good at writing women, but they're really good at men, like Quentin Tarantino, right?
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: You go, well, he's got a problem writing women.
- 53:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: These people have a problem writing everyone.
- 53:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they and that's not.
- 53:52SPEAKER_05: Not one person in this is realistic.
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: They no, and they haven't thought about the backstory of anybody.
- 53:57SPEAKER_03: Like, even like Nicolas Cage's character, you're like, all you get is that oh yeah, he's got a fit wife and he hit a guy and killed him.
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: Like you, there's no more backstory.
- 54:06SPEAKER_05: He's getting out of jail to and he's gonna see his daughter.
- 54:08SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 54:09SPEAKER_03: Just wants to see his daughter.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: Like, there's no complicated feelings about how he's felt in prison and all that.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: Don't give a shit about that.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: Like, it's the top line minimum.
- 54:21SPEAKER_05: Uh this is funny.
- 54:23SPEAKER_05: The worst part of the conclusion is that when you breathe a sigh of relief that this is repetitive and overly long film is over, it isn't.
- 54:29SPEAKER_05: No, it isn't.
- 54:30SPEAKER_05: It isn't.
- 54:30SPEAKER_05: There's another 15 minutes.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: And there are so many big action set points that you go, like they obviously um they blow up a petrol station with a plane crashed in it.
- 54:40SPEAKER_03: They um they tow a car behind the plane.
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: Like everything is bananas.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: And it's just so great that it just goes.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: And but I like that.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: It's like you, it's almost like by the end of it, you're punch drunk.
- 54:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:52SPEAKER_03: You're like, oh my god, there's been so much mad shit and so many big, incredible action scenes.
- 54:57SPEAKER_03: It's just phenomenal.
- 54:58SPEAKER_05: Do you know what is closest to this now when I'm thinking about it?
- 55:02SPEAKER_05: Is the Fast and the Furious franchise.
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:04SPEAKER_05: It's the only ones where they're like, how can we heighten this?
- 55:07SPEAKER_05: How can we have fun?
- 55:08SPEAKER_05: Bigger, more, more.
- 55:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, everything is extended.
- 55:11SPEAKER_03: It's almost like, I cannot believe there's never been a Conair theme park ride.
- 55:16SPEAKER_05: Oh, it'd be so good.
- 55:18SPEAKER_03: But it's just that kind of vibe in it where they go, it's just another thrill, another thrill, a bigger loop, a bigger drop.
- 55:24SPEAKER_03: Like that's how it's almost written like a roller coaster.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: You're sitting on the plane and it's shaky.
- 55:29SPEAKER_03: But it's just that way, the way they that the whole like ethos of how they've done it is like thrills.
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: Thrills, spills, and making people have fun.
- 55:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 55:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like there's nothing else around it.
- 55:39SPEAKER_05: I can't believe they didn't make one at the time.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: Well, I don't know, if because like it's Disney, innit, Touchstone, and they wouldn't have had it at Disneyland because it's a bit too, I guess.
- 55:48SPEAKER_05: You know, I guess now Disney are branching more into adult territories that it was.
- 55:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I guess I don't know, but it's it's just very kind of it's just that's how it feels when you're watching it rather than anything.
- 55:59SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's like that.
- 56:00SPEAKER_03: They've thought of it, like it's just maximum fun, minimum effort.
- 56:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think it's wild that he was shooting this and face off at the same time.
- 56:07SPEAKER_05: Especially when you see face off, you'll be like, I can't believe they're gonna be able to do it.
- 56:10SPEAKER_05: Oh really?
- 56:11SPEAKER_05: Because he's such a different character in that.
- 56:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's fun.
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: He's so different in that.
- 56:14SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna watch it tonight now.
- 56:15SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go home and watch face off.
- 56:17SPEAKER_05: So, like, initially he is the criminal in it, but then obviously they do the switch faces thing, and then he's playing the yeah, it's so fun.
- 56:25SPEAKER_03: Um I think he's a really good actor, right?
- 56:27SPEAKER_03: I really like Nicholas.
- 56:28SPEAKER_03: This is the thing, I yeah.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of his films that I suppose he's having a bit of a renaissance because he did like Pig and things like that, but I really like some of his like quite shit, kind of like straight to DVD stuff, he's still good in it.
- 56:42SPEAKER_05: He's always good in where.
- 56:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 56:44SPEAKER_03: That's a really fun film.
- 56:46SPEAKER_05: That's so fun.
- 56:46SPEAKER_05: He's having a lot of fun in it.
- 56:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like they're just good, like he's and he is what he is, right?
- 56:51SPEAKER_03: And he really leans into it.
- 56:52SPEAKER_03: And I think, but maybe he's making so many movies that you're like, well, he's gonna be good.
- 56:56SPEAKER_03: They're gonna be alright sometimes by accident.
- 56:59SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I think This is the thing people say about him.
- 57:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I just think like this film is the most 90s thing.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: It's so American.
- 57:06SPEAKER_03: It's even like the soundtrack with the fucking wailing guitars in the background, sweet home Alabama, where do I live?
- 57:13SPEAKER_03: And also, yeah, how do I what a great movie song.
- 57:15SPEAKER_05: Perfect movie song.
- 57:16SPEAKER_05: It's like opens and closes.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: It feels like it should be in a different movie to this.
- 57:20SPEAKER_05: It does and it doesn't.
- 57:21SPEAKER_05: I think it's I think I think it's great for it.
- 57:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a good, yeah.
- 57:25SPEAKER_03: Because I didn't know I knew the song before I knew the movie.
- 57:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, same.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: It's like the song doesn't connect in any way to it for me.
- 57:31SPEAKER_03: Um and every time it comes on, I go, Yeah, this is a great song.
- 57:33SPEAKER_05: It's also not the Leanne Rhymes version, it's a Trisha Yearwood version of it.
- 57:37SPEAKER_03: Is that the original or did Leanne Rhymes do the original?
- 57:39SPEAKER_05: I th what I read in this was like Leanne Rhymes did the original, but maybe Trisha Yearwood did the original.
- 57:44SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 57:44SPEAKER_05: I'm not but like I'm not super off with it.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: Like my Leanne Rhymes knowledge is limited.
- 57:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 57:50SPEAKER_05: Uh and it was also written by Diane, Diane Warren, who who is do you know, do you know much about her?
- 57:58SPEAKER_05: I know the name, but I don't know.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: Well, tell me.
- 58:00SPEAKER_05: So she's she's someone who will who writes like songs for for movies, essentially.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: She's had like 17 or 18 Oscar nominations where like every year Best Original Song.
- 58:12SPEAKER_05: Best original song, every year they will just nominate her because they see her name on like what other songs has she written then?
- 58:18SPEAKER_05: Um so originally, so she wrote Rhythm of the Night.
- 58:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:24SPEAKER_05: Um which was the the big thing for her.
- 58:27SPEAKER_05: And then let me find the ones that she's been nominated for.
- 58:31SPEAKER_05: Uminations.
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: Here we go.
- 58:36SPEAKER_01: Nothing's gonna stop us now from from Mannequin.
- 58:41SPEAKER_03: What's the song Nothing's gonna Nothing's gonna Which is Who Sang that in the film?
- 58:47SPEAKER_05: Uh Starship.
- 58:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, she wrote that.
- 58:52SPEAKER_05: She wrote that.
- 58:53SPEAKER_05: She wrote I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing for Armageddon.
- 58:56SPEAKER_03: No way!
- 58:56SPEAKER_05: She wrote How Do I Live?
- 58:58SPEAKER_05: She wrote Because You Loved Me.
- 58:59SPEAKER_05: She wrote There You'll Be Because You Love Me from Toy Story 2.
- 59:03SPEAKER_05: I thought it was, it's not.
- 59:04SPEAKER_05: It's from Up Close and Personal.
- 59:05SPEAKER_05: I guess it's a different thing.
- 59:06SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say that's a that's a real departure from her normal thing.
- 59:09SPEAKER_05: Um she wrote uh There You'll Be from Pearl Harbor.
- 59:13SPEAKER_05: And then she gets into this like territory of just like this is where she gets nominated for like some random song from a random film that you've never heard of.
- 59:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:21SPEAKER_05: And they just give every single year.
- 59:23SPEAKER_05: So so she's been nominated for best original song at the Oscars every year from 2014 to now.
- 59:31SPEAKER_05: And has she won?
- 59:32SPEAKER_05: She's never won.
- 59:34SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 59:34SPEAKER_05: She's never won.
- 59:35SPEAKER_05: Because it's just like, it's just shit.
- 59:37SPEAKER_05: And also, it's sure shit, right?
- 59:39SPEAKER_03: But I think the the 90s, everything had a good original song like everything had an original song.
- 59:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:44SPEAKER_03: Like everything had a song for the movie.
- 59:46SPEAKER_03: Whereas it's not the done thing as much anymore.
- 59:49SPEAKER_03: So if she's churning out all right ones, she's not.
- 59:51SPEAKER_05: They're just naming, they're just nominating her because of the name now.
- 59:54SPEAKER_05: Now because she has such an attachment, because like because she did so well in the 90s.
- 59:58SPEAKER_03: But I'm just saying there can't be many original songs that are being written for films anyway.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: Like, it's not like back in the 90s where they all had them.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_03: No, it's not.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_03: And I think that's why she continues to get nominated.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, good for her.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, she's got an honorary Oscar from 2022.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_00: Like they don't care.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_05: And then in 2025, she was nominated for a song that she wrote for a documentary about herself.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that feels like that category's dead, doesn't it?
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_03: Fucking hell.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_03: Sorry, Diane, but my god.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_05: Crazy.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_05: Um she's she's a strange, she's a strange, strange person.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_05: Um There's yeah.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_05: I think there's if there's anything else about this movie that's insane.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_05: Tony Scott was gonna direct it originally.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_05: Oh really?
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_05: Which I would have loved.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_03: Ridley Scott's brother.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_05: He was an action director.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, a big action director.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, he was like massive, but I didn't realise he was sort of attached to this ever.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_05: They want Studio wanted him.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_03: Fair enough.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_05: I guess he maybe turned down.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_05: Then, okay, here's something.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_05: Here is this is crazy.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_05: Looking at the who's considered for Cyrus, Gary Oldman was the first choice.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_03: Great, perfect.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_03: Gary Oldman's yeah.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_03: Gary Oldman could play anybody.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_03: He should play Diane Warren in that documentary.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_05: Diane Warren's trying to win an Oscar.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_03: She's so he's so perfect for villains and he's kind of chewing the scenery and enjoying himself.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_03: I think that really comes across with him.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_03: See, I'd see Gary Oldman play so much.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_05: Have you seen True Romance?
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, great, brilliant.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_05: He's just brilliant.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_03: Well, even like at the moment in Slow Horses, he's clearly having fun with it.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_03: And I think that's what he's very good at.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: But yeah, that'd have been great.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_03: Who else?
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_05: So many people.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_05: Kevin Bacon.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_05: Alec Baldwin?
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_05: No.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_05: No.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_05: George Clooney.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_05: No.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_05: De Niro, maybe.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: Very different character, then, isn't it?
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_05: Michael Douglas.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_05: No.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_05: Richard Dreyfuss, no.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_05: James Gandolfini.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_03: But they're all more you're going like more like they could play like gangster-y guys, not like this kind of insane bloke.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they're like Ed Harris, Rudger Hauer.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_03: Ed Harris would be interesting.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it'd be very different.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_05: Everyone here, John Travolta was what oh it would have been great if it was John Travolta.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_05: But at the same time, it's face-off.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_05: Like both of the two.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_03: But I don't know if John like I don't know, John Malkovich has got that super intelligent, sinister thing down there.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_03: This is the thing, yeah.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_03: Another thing they would struggle with.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_03: It'd be a different character.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_05: Every one of these people is like Jack Nicholson, completely different.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_05: Sean Penn, completely different.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_05: Bruce Willis, no.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_05: Like none of these would have worked very differently.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_05: And then Vince Larkin.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_05: Vince is Vince the Vince is um John.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_05: John Cusack.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_05: So Robert Downey Jr., Charlie Sheen, and Matthew Broderick considered.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_03: Matthew Broderick, I think, would have been, out of those ones, is kind of like the I think would be quite good, kind of nerdy guy.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_03: I like that.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it'd have leant into that side of it more.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_03: That could have been funny.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that would have been great, I think.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_05: Um what else was there?
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_05: Who else was considered for all these?
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_05: The the funny thing about Mikel C.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_05: Williamson and Dave Chappelle being in this was Dave Chappelle turned down Bubba Gump.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_05: No, there's not the Bubba Gump Bubba from He turned it down.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_05: So like he was gonna be Bubba and then couldn't do it.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: No, he didn't want to do it.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_05: He didn't he just didn't want to play that character.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_05: I think the other guy's a better Bubba.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know, yeah, it's your sort of kinder, softer role isn't it.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: Um where else is there stuff about this?
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: There's so many things about this movie.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_05: Umly two or two people So Nicolas Cage Oscar winner, John Malkovich Oscar nominee, no one else anything.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_05: Which is crazy.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of character actors and stuff though, isn't it?
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but you'd think you'd think by now at least.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, maybe lost both of its Academy Award nominations, Best Sound and Best Original Song, to Titanic.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_05: Of course it did.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, of course it did.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_03: Bad year to be a disaster movie.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_03: Like that is that's very, very big.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_03: I love that it got nominated for two Oscars, though.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_03: That is quite funny.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_05: That is funny, but also like Best Song was one of those nominations, and of course it was this song got nominated.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_05: Fair enough.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, there's so there's there's so much trivia on this movie.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_05: There's so like and there's hundreds and hundreds of pieces of trivia on this.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I've been too much to even like I think it's one of those where people have really enjoyed it and like have gotten into it, haven't they?
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's lots of stories around it.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_03: You know, it's the peak of cocaine-fueled 90s Bruckheimer movies.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_03: So I think that's a lot of things.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_05: The Bruckheimer's like the the you he's is famous for the cocaine.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, these mad scripts, like it's fucking great.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_03: More of that.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_05: And then, yeah, so people said like the the Holy Trinity is of Nicolas Cage movies, of like Nicolas Cage action movies, it is the rock, this, face off, all in like the space of a year.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they all within a year of each other.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_05: Within a year.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_05: That's a good run.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_05: That's a great run.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_03: And they were all they were all critical, they were box office successes as well.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_03: Huge.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_05: Huge.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_03: It's like 97 is sort of his moment.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's like right in there.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, look, I I I will I'm gonna watch face off now.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_03: I've seen The Rock and I like The Rock, but and then I'm gonna come, I'm gonna watch them all in one day.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_03: I think that's how I'm gonna do my evening tonight.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_05: That's a great night.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_05: Face off is long, by the way.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_05: Face off is like two and a half hours, I feel like.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_03: Oh, maybe face off is over two nights then.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_05: Are you one of those people that has to watch over two nights?
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, I can do my wife is terrible because she will um we'll be watching something and there'll be like half an hour left, and she's like, I'm going to bed.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, can we jump?
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_03: We're nearly there.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_03: Not just finish it, but she will go, No, I will finish it tomorrow.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_03: I need to go to bed.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's a nightmare for that.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_03: So I do end up doing that, yes.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_03: I c I really find that I need to finish something and just like I don't mind, but I would rather finish it sometimes, especially if I'm enjoying it.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_03: I'm like, well, I'll I'll step another half an hour.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: But she's like, nope, it's time to go.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_03: Very militant.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_05: Oh, I don't know if I could do that.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I I probably would.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm gonna do a thing now.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_05: Let's let's go into the the game that I wanted to try, which was I'm gonna do keep four, cut four.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_05: I don't know if you've seen this, but like I'm gonna give you this is a blind I'm gonna give you these blindly.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_05: I'm just gonna name name the movies, and you're gonna say if you want to keep it or cut it, but you've only you can only keep four, and you can only cut four.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_03: Okay, fine.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_05: And the Nicolas Cage movies.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_03: Lovely.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_05: So I will start with I've made a list of them to know which ones I want to do.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna start with Adaptation.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_03: I've never seen it cut.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_05: Oh it's probably his like highest-rated movie.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_05: Oh really?
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_05: I've never seen it cut.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_05: Um Ghost Rider.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_05: Are there eight of them you're always?
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_05: There's eight here.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_05: Cut.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_05: Okay, so you've cut two already.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_05: Um gone in 60 seconds.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_05: Keep.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_05: Keep gone in 60 seconds.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_05: I know where this is okay, I see I see where you're leaning.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_03: I don't want Nicholas Cage, I know what I want my Nicolas Cage to be doing.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_03: You know, he's he's he's got a very specific job in my head.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_03: Connor.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_03: Keep.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_05: Okay, so you've got two and two now.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_05: Leaving Las Vegas.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_02: Ooh.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_02: I'm worried about Wells is coming to Kate.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_05: Okay, so you've got Connor leaving Las Vegas and gone in 60 seconds.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_03: They're the three I've kept so far.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_05: So you can keep one more.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_01: Which way do I go with this now?
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_01: Captain Corelli's mandolin.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_01: I don't love a costumey thing, not for me.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_05: So you've cut you cut adaptation, Captain Corelli's mandolin.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_01: And you can't ghostwriting.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've done three and three.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_01: I've got one of each left.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_05: I was gonna say face off, but you haven't seen it, so there's no point in saying that.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_03: No, but you know what?
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_03: I'll keep it to see it.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_03: Like if I cut it, then I'll never get to see it, so I'll keep face off.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_05: Okay, there you go.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_05: That's the four.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_03: Lovely, done.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_03: And what's the final one?
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's cut?
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_05: The final one you cut is long legs.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, but you know what?
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_03: So I've seen it.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_03: You've seen it.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_03: I have seen long legs, and he looks like John Kusack now in it.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_03: He does, yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_03: He does.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_03: So that's why I it's he's a bit too creepy in.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_05: Oh, I really like his performances.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_03: He's it's a cool film, but like I he really puts me on edge.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's one of those like makes me squirm, so I'm happy to cut that just so I can easily.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_05: So yours are gone in 60 seconds, Conair, face off, and leaving Las Vegas, and you cut adaptation, Captain Curry's Mandolin, Ghost Rider, and Long Legs.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_03: I think other people would swap that round, wouldn't they?
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_05: They would, yeah, but you also did it blindly.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_03: I did it blind, and also, like I said, I want a big stupid action film with Nicolas Cage.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't want any Oscar Bait, thank you.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_05: This all this does it does all track with what you've been saying the whole time.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like it's like when Dwayne Johnson tries to do anything that isn't just him.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't want to see that.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_03: I'm not interested.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_05: Oh god, when he does when uh what are the films he's been doing lately?
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_03: Black Adam, dog shit.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_05: Oh, so bad.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_03: But he's bad in it.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's a deep.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_05: He can only play.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_03: I want Nicolas Cage to be like weird and in an action film.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_03: But he's a very good actor, but that's just my preference, you know.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_05: I'm just thinking about this.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_05: Around this time, he was supposed to be Superman as well.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I've seen the video of him in the series.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_03: Isn't that great?
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_03: That'd be weird.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_05: I would love that though.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_03: Because he's always Nicholas Chen.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because I think he was probably during this, wasn't he when he auditioned?
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_03: And I I need Nicolas Cage to be doing a very specific thing, otherwise, I'm watching a film going.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_03: It's like Tom Cruise, in every film I've ever watched Tom Cruise, and I'm going, that's Tom Case.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_05: Tom Cruise, yeah.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_05: That does tend to be the problem with those with the case.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, whereas Nicolas Cage, I think, in these sorts of roles where he can really put his teeth in, he's fine.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_03: Otherwise, I'm like, oh, it's Nicolas Cage.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_05: I guess long legs, you're like, no, that's not anything.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_03: Well, it's just like it's quite a it's quite an unsettling film.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_03: I did enjoy it, but yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_03: I've just, you know.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_05: But Gone in 60 Seconds, he's great and he's so fun.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a great like those 90s action films like were done very well with him in.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_05: Oh god, I wish he would go back.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_05: I I do wish like they'd start making those again.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they never will, though, will they?
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_05: It's too expensive.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_03: More CGI action hero films.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_05: This is the thing, it's all CGI now.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_05: It's not fun.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_05: Do you remember the point where it was like all this all martial arts in the in the movies they were putting in?
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_03: Everything goes through the trend, doesn't it?
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_03: Like, I do like that someone like Christopher Nolan does a lot of like, oh no, we're doing it.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_03: Like, I think that is good.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_03: Because I think CGI is getting worse.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_05: It is definitely getting worse.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_05: He only had like a little bit of CGI in the Odyssey, which is crazy.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_03: Tiny bits, yeah, but I think like it's and I'm not I'm not into superhero films, really.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_03: Like the the Avengers and all that have never done anything for me.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I'd rather be like, I'd rather they spend 50 million quid on an action film like this.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_05: Well, this costs more than 50.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_03: No, I know, but you know, even if they're gonna like, yeah, let's make some stupid action film.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_05: What is that?
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_05: It's like so it was like 75, wasn't it?
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_05: So that's like nearly that's probably like a hundred now.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_03: Probably more.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_05: Crazy.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_05: You can see it though.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_05: You see it.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, there's well, even like the airfield is massive with all the with the the the the the plain bone like bone yards.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_03: One thing I'll say So 75 million dollars in 1997 is the equivalent of 156 million dollars today.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_05: Holy shit.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_05: So yes, a lot of that's an expensive movie.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_03: It's an expensive movie, it's a big, big risk.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_03: And you said he got 20 million.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_03: Apparently he got 20 million, yeah.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_04: What so what's that now?
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_05: 40, it'd be about 40.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_03: It's like double.
- 1:11:34unknown: Fucking hell.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_05: To get 40 million for one movie.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_03: Good for them.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_05: Crazy.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_05: Like he really was at his peak.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he was like untouchable.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_05: I actually need to pull I need to pull out what he was in at this exact time, other than those movies.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_05: Like what led to this these ones.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_05: He's been in s 120 movies.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_05: So coming off of this, he did so he did leaving Las Vegas, he won an Oscar.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_05: Then he did The Rock.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_03: Great.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_05: Then he did Connor, then he did Face Off.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_03: And then what was after Face Off?
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_05: City of Angels.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_03: What's that about?
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_05: Um, it's to do with him being an angel on Earth.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_05: It's not great.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_03: No, that was sort of he had a really nice little action run and did something a bit different.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_03: And then does it start to drop off after that?
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_05: No, then he goes back into action again.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_05: Then he does Snake Eyes, 8mm, Bringing Out the Dead, Gone in 60 Seconds.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_05: Then he goes into his weird ones where he's like Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Christmas Carol, the movie, The Family Man.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_03: Like that's like That sounds like the tax bill came.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_05: Then he goes into Adaptation, which he's great in, Matchstick Men, National Treasure.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_05: Uh then this is this is where it gets weird.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_05: The Weatherman, World Trade Center, The Wicker Man, Ghost Rider.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_05: Like That's when the tax built.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this is where the tax built.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_05: Next, Bangkok Dangerous, knowing, bad lieutenant, and he's churning out like three a year as well.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this is he's like these these are literally like three a year, four a year.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_05: Christ, like he really went through it.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_03: And then now he's kind of doing like cool indie films and he's sort of coming out the other side.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he he just did the Spider Noir series, which was fun.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_03: Long legs, obviously.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_03: Long legs, Pitty Pig.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_03: You know the one about the truffle hunter?
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sort of really interesting stuff now.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_05: Willie's Wonderland.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_05: Uh that sounds like a porn film.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it does.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_05: Dream scenario, Dream Scenario, which is really fun.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_05: Um, and he did um the unbearable weight of massive talent.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_05: Like he's he's having fun now.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_05: He's back into his like fun.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_03: Just having a just having a good time.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_05: So like good for him.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_05: I'm glad he's back.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_05: I'm glad he's out of that.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he can have it.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_03: Conair for me is the thing I'll remember him for forever.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_05: Oh, for sure, yeah.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_05: Conair and face off are like the two that I'm just like that's that's the height of Nick Cage for me.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_05: So okay, so let's let's talk about um let's go into the the final segment, which is the reverse of this, which is do you have a movie that's well loved, well reviewed, you actually think it's a bad one?
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_03: Gosh, yeah.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's probably quite a few.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_03: Like I there's a lot of kind of like Oscar baity stuff that I never really love.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_03: And I'm not a big sci-fi man.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_02: So there's a lot of like Blade Runner is not really for me.
- 1:14:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_03: Like, I know that's like a massive kind of like um sacrilege in the cinema world, but a friend of mine a few years ago um went we all went to see for his birthday, we went to see a direct the director's cut of Blade Runner in the BFI.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_05: Oh, interesting.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_05: I fell asleep.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_05: Wow, because also the director's cut is way more loved than the original.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, but I fell asleep.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_03: I was quite that's quite funny.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_03: It's just like, but that kind of like those sort of like sci-fi dystopian things, like there's some of it I don't mind, but like it's just not my bag.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_05: What do you not which ones do you like then?
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_05: You said you know some you don't mind.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_03: I really like like June, I think, are really good films, like that kind of, but that's proper, like that's interesting that you really like Dune, but you're like Blade Runner.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_03: It's almost like that mix in the middle of like, you know, a short time into the future, like like the judge dread sort of thing, right?
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_03: Those kinds of stuff just aren't for me.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_03: Whereas um I don't dislike June, but Dune's a political thriller, really, like dressed up as it.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_03: So like it's not the idea, yeah, it's not a runner is the one that everyone knows that.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_03: I'm just don't get it.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_05: Is it just that you just don't you just can't connect with it then?
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's just not like it's just not my thing in any way.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know what it is about that kind of stuff, but it's just yeah, that sort of sci-fi dystopian thing.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_03: It's not my bag.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_05: Um, the one that the sci-fi one that comes up on here quite a lot is Arrival.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_05: People don't like arrival.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_03: I've never seen it.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_03: I did think Interstellar was quite boring.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_03: I did too.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_03: And I also hated Tenant.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_03: I walked out.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_03: I didn't even finish it.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_05: There's I've I've talked about this a few times on here, but like there's a period of Kristen vanolen movies that I really don't enjoy, and it's that time.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_05: They're a bit dull.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_05: I I think he's coming out of that, yeah, and I'm starting to enjoy them now.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_03: I thought Oppenheimer was very interesting.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_03: I did think that was quite dull.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I would agree.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_03: It was good, like there were bits I really liked about it, but I thought it was like boring.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_05: It was boring.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_03: It was like that felt like well made.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's that's exactly it.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_05: It's well made.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_05: I can appreciate that, but not for me.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Interstellar was another one.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_03: I'm just like, it just doesn't really do it for me, space.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_05: I get it, I get it.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_05: There's a lot of people that don't like space movies.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, it's just one of those things, you know.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_03: And I think like um my um wife really likes kind of like what would be sci- well, like like sort of historical, sci-fi fiction-y, yeah, fairy porny books, you know, but like won't do space.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_03: But it's just never been but then I'm not I'm not into like dragons and swords, particularly.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_03: Game of Thrones and stuff, and I've read some of I've read the books of those, a couple of them, but it's like, yeah, kind of fantasy is not me.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_03: Like, give me a stupid action film that's really unrealistic, which is basically fantasy anyway.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so you're like not into Lord of the Rings, for example.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_03: Look, I think the Lord of the Rings films are amazing, but uh the other sh offshoots of it, like so anything that's like Lord of the Rings is great, and Game of Thrones is great almost till the end, and then um, but anything like The Wheel of Time, yeah, yeah, I'm not bothered.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_03: Like it's just completely fill you up.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_03: My wife just reads fantasy and she loves and but has read The Wheel of Time, she's read all the really classic fantasy, yeah.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_03: She's probably read Lord of the Rings six or seven times, yeah, just not my thing.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I can I I get that as well, though.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_05: I get it.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_05: I I can get into like I love Lord of the Rings, I love parts of Game of Thrones, but the offshoots again, like you said, the offshoots.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and like the ones that are very popular that just I just don't get it.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_03: It's just not for me.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_05: All the all the extra shows as well that they're doing.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_03: I just I've given up on all of them.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_05: I don't care.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, where she likes all that or watch any of it, but not for me.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_05: Um, well, thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_05: Thank you for having me.

- 1:18:20SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be really fun and really stupid, and there's nothing in it that has any narrative, any deeper beat.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_03: It's just a load of wank jokes and stupid things.
