- 0:01Speaker 1: The Gone Call podcasts may contain violent or graphics subject matter.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Listener discretion is advised. At one thirty pm on Monday
- 0:11Speaker 2: March twelfth, nineteen seventy nine, an employee of a jewelry
- 0:15Speaker 2: store located in the South Cliff Shopping Center in southwest
- 0:19Speaker 2: Fort Worth phoned the police to report a terrible odor
- 0:23Speaker 2: coming from a vehicle parked in the lot. The car
- 0:27Speaker 2: from which the smell originated, a red nineteen sixty eight
- 0:31Speaker 2: Chevy Camaro, had been in the same spot for approximately
- 0:35Speaker 2: a month, the jewelry employee reported. Responding Officer John Campbell
- 0:40Speaker 2: noted that the car was locked, and on the driver's
- 0:43Speaker 2: door a note was found that read, I would like
- 0:47Speaker 2: to buy your vehicle Call me at followed by a
- 0:50Speaker 2: telephone number. When the policeman peered inside, he could see
- 0:54Speaker 2: several boxes in the back seat. After he jimmied the
- 0:58Speaker 2: lock using a long officer Campbell discovered clothing, chemistry notes,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and a chemistry set. Within the boxes. A shoe box
- 1:08Speaker 2: hid a purse and wallet which contained some jewelry change
- 1:13Speaker 2: and several unspent thirty eight caliber bullets. Campbell radioed his superior, sergeant,
- 1:20Speaker 2: Richard Andrews, who responded to the scene to observe the
- 1:24Speaker 2: trunk being opened. Using a priye bar, Officer Campbell popped
- 1:29Speaker 2: the trunk. The sight and smell was overwhelming. Inside, lying
- 1:34Speaker 2: on a large piece of plastic was the badly decomposed
- 1:38Speaker 2: body of a woman clad in blue jeans, a plaid shirt,
- 1:42Speaker 2: and white socks. She'd been shot to death multiple times
- 1:47Speaker 2: in her chest. The victim was tentatively identified as twenty
- 1:52Speaker 2: six year old Susan Boatman Kilgore by documentation found within
- 1:56Speaker 2: the car, and later officially identified. Fort Worth Star Telegram
- 2:02Speaker 2: reporters caught wind of the discovery fast and swarmed the scene.
- 2:07Speaker 2: It wasn't lost on them that the woman, judging by
- 2:10Speaker 2: the stage of decomposition, had been killed in February. Lieutenant
- 2:16Speaker 2: Cooy Martin agreed, we thought we got by that time
- 2:19Speaker 2: of year without one of these, but I guess we didn't,
- 2:22Speaker 2: Martin said. It was later determined Susan was killed in
- 2:27Speaker 2: early February. Some on the force, such as homicide detective
- 2:32Speaker 2: Roy Mullins, wholeheartedly believed in a connection between the February slangs,
- 2:37Speaker 2: now spanning a total of twelve years. In fact, Mullins
- 2:42Speaker 2: prepared a map that showed something striking. After marking the
- 2:47Speaker 2: spots where a few of the four victims were last
- 2:50Speaker 2: seen and where their bodies were found, including Susan Kilgore's,
- 2:55Speaker 2: he discovered the dots formed a crescent shape through the
- 2:58Speaker 2: southwest part of Terrank County in the interstate Loop eight
- 3:02Speaker 2: twenty area. It isn't clear exactly which cases Detective Mullens
- 3:07Speaker 2: included on this map, but whatever the case, it was
- 3:10Speaker 2: a stretch, and Susan Kilgore's murder was never mentioned alongside
- 3:15Speaker 2: the others after the initial suggestion, What eventually became known
- 3:31Speaker 2: as the February Slangs began with the nineteen sixty seven
- 3:35Speaker 2: murder of Mildred May. On her way home from stepping
- 3:39Speaker 2: out for a few drinks at Fort Worth's Elmatador Club
- 3:42Speaker 2: on the evening of Friday, February third, nineteen sixty seven,
- 3:46Speaker 2: Mildred's car broke down on the east shoulder of the
- 3:49Speaker 2: forty five hundred block of West Freeway on the city's
- 3:53Speaker 2: southwest side. The next afternoon, she was found nude, badly beaten,
- 3:58Speaker 2: sexually assault and strangled to death by two boys riding
- 4:03Speaker 2: dirt bikes on a West Fork levee of the Trinity River.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Six years later, on the night of Wednesday, February seventh,
- 4:11Speaker 2: nineteen seventy three, twenty one year old Becky Martin disappeared
- 4:15Speaker 2: from the parking lot of what was then called Terrant
- 4:17Speaker 2: County Junior College. For several weeks, there was no sign
- 4:22Speaker 2: of her, but on the afternoon of Monday, March twenty sixth,
- 4:25Speaker 2: nineteen seventy three, Becky's skeletal remains were found in a
- 4:29Speaker 2: culvert on a secluded county road in far west fort Worth.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Because there were no marks on Becky's bones, no nicks
- 4:38Speaker 2: from a knife, whole from a bullet, or fractures from
- 4:41Speaker 2: a beating, fort Worth medical examiner Felix Quote's guest that
- 4:45Speaker 2: she died by strangulation. The next February slang was recently
- 4:50Speaker 2: solved forty six years after it happened. In the early
- 4:54Speaker 2: morning hours of February seventeenth, nineteen seventy four, a predator
- 5:00Speaker 2: hunting abducted Carla Walker from the passenger side of her
- 5:03Speaker 2: boyfriend's vehicle in the parking lot of the Ridgeley, Brunswick
- 5:07Speaker 2: Bowling Alley. Carla was the third in the series of
- 5:10Speaker 2: the so called February Slangs. She was found three and
- 5:14Speaker 2: a half days after she was stripped from her boyfriend's
- 5:17Speaker 2: vehicle in a culvert near Benbrook Lake, around ten miles
- 5:21Speaker 2: south of the site of the abduction. She had been
- 5:24Speaker 2: sexually assaulted and strangled to death. The monster who raped
- 5:29Speaker 2: and killed Carla Walker was identified in September of twenty
- 5:33Speaker 2: twenty by DNA as Glenn Samuel McCurley, then seventy seven
- 5:38Speaker 2: years old and ailing. The fourth victim in the February
- 5:42Speaker 2: Slangs was twenty five year old June Ward. In the
- 5:46Speaker 2: early morning hours of February nineteenth, nineteen seventy seven, June's
- 5:50Speaker 2: body was discovered on a curb at the one thousand
- 5:53Speaker 2: block of West Fuller Avenue on Fort Worth's south side.
- 5:58Speaker 2: She'd been strangled to death with the her own brawl
- 6:00Speaker 2: and mutilated, struck in the head and body multiple times
- 6:04Speaker 2: with a heavy sharp weapon believed to be some sort
- 6:07Speaker 2: of hatchet. The fifth and sixth victims of the series
- 6:12Speaker 2: of crimes referred to as the February Slangs are Christie
- 6:16Speaker 2: Tower and Hillside Jane Doe. Christy. Jean Tower moved to Odessa,
- 6:29Speaker 2: Texas from her childhood home in London, Ontario, Canada, in
- 6:33Speaker 2: nineteen eighty She was in her early twenties and seemed
- 6:37Speaker 2: to be doing some soul searching. Her mother, Jean Tower,
- 6:42Speaker 2: later told a Canadian newspaper that Christie wanted to see
- 6:46Speaker 2: a little bit of the world before settling down. Texas,
- 6:50Speaker 2: of course, offered her nearly year round warmth and practically
- 6:54Speaker 2: never a harsh winter, which could not be set for
- 6:57Speaker 2: her hometown. By December of nineteen eighty two, however, Christy
- 7:02Speaker 2: was feeling a little homesick. She moved in with her
- 7:06Speaker 2: sister Wendy and brother in law Dick in Grand Prairie, Texas,
- 7:10Speaker 2: that month, hoping her sister would fill the void that
- 7:13Speaker 2: her homesickness was leaving. Christy got a job in Dallas
- 7:17Speaker 2: as a server, but only lasted a couple weeks before
- 7:21Speaker 2: she quit that restaurant to work at Billy Bob's in
- 7:23Speaker 2: fort Worth. Billy Bob's nightclub is located in the fort
- 7:28Speaker 2: Worth Stockyards in the city's north end and is sort
- 7:32Speaker 2: of an anomaly. It's got a honky tonk vibe big time,
- 7:36Speaker 2: something you wouldn't necessarily expect from such a large venue,
- 7:40Speaker 2: which used to be in open air barn where prized
- 7:43Speaker 2: cattle awaited their walk of fame. In fact, Billy Bobbs
- 7:48Speaker 2: called themselves the world's biggest honky tonk. It is an
- 7:52Speaker 2: impressive place and was even in nineteen eighty three, often
- 7:56Speaker 2: housing big name acts like Ernest Tubb, Carly Pride, and
- 8:01Speaker 2: Willie Nelson. Christi Tower, twenty six years old by this time,
- 8:06Speaker 2: was a night owl who likely found serving at Billy
- 8:09Speaker 2: Bob's much more exciting than whatever Dallas restaurant she'd been
- 8:13Speaker 2: working for. Regardless, her new employment wasn't a permanent thing.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Christy was a free spirit, highly independent, and didn't live
- 8:24Speaker 2: in constant fear of boogeymen. She was known to hitchhike
- 8:28Speaker 2: and more often than not stayed out until the late
- 8:31Speaker 2: hours had turned to early hours, but she was still homesick.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Christie's plan was to work a while, sell the few
- 8:39Speaker 2: large possessions she'd attained since her move to Texas, and
- 8:43Speaker 2: head back home to Canada. No matter her plans, and
- 8:48Speaker 2: no matter how little she feared them, Fort Worth in
- 8:51Speaker 2: nineteen eighty three was home to many boogeymen, and because
- 8:55Speaker 2: of this, Christi Tower never made it back home, only
- 8:59Speaker 2: three weeks after her first shift at the world's biggest
- 9:03Speaker 2: honky Tonk, Christy disappeared on Friday, February fourth, nineteen eighty three,
- 9:20Speaker 2: at two thirty am, Christy Jean Tower headed to her
- 9:24Speaker 2: car parked in Billy Bob's northeast lot after finishing her shift.
- 9:29Speaker 2: It was the last place she'd be seen alive. When
- 9:33Speaker 2: she didn't return to the home she shared with her
- 9:36Speaker 2: sister and brother in law in Grand Prairie, she was
- 9:39Speaker 2: reported missing the following day, on February fifth. The first
- 9:44Speaker 2: course of action for the Fort Worth Police, upon Christy's sister, Wendy,
- 9:49Speaker 2: filing the missing person's report, was to head up to
- 9:52Speaker 2: Billy Bobb's to see if they could pin down her
- 9:54Speaker 2: last known location there. The cops did, indeed find the
- 9:59Speaker 2: last person known to have seen her. A coworker in
- 10:03Speaker 2: the nightclub's parking lot, sat Christie's car, and the scene
- 10:07Speaker 2: indicated foul play. Two of the nineteen seventy five copper
- 10:12Speaker 2: color four door Chevy and Pola doors were unlocked, the
- 10:16Speaker 2: rear passenger and the driver inside the vehicle. Contents of
- 10:21Speaker 2: the glove compartment were strewn about on the seats and floorboards.
- 10:26Speaker 2: None of Christi Tower's personal effects, though, such as her
- 10:30Speaker 2: purse or wallet, were found. The car had been ransacked,
- 10:35Speaker 2: but detectives were skeptical. They didn't think it was a
- 10:38Speaker 2: car burglary at all, but instead believed it had been
- 10:42Speaker 2: staged to look like one. Officer Leonard Schilling wrote in
- 10:46Speaker 2: his report in fact that the incident was not a
- 10:50Speaker 2: typical North side car burglary because commonly stolen parts hadn't
- 10:54Speaker 2: been taken, such as the brand new tires the vehicle
- 10:58Speaker 2: had and the stereo. Christie's Impaula, too, was an older model,
- 11:03Speaker 2: a nineteen seventy five, so it was hardly a shining
- 11:07Speaker 2: beacon for would be car burglars. The witness who'd seen
- 11:11Speaker 2: her leave that night said Christie was wearing a white shirt,
- 11:15Speaker 2: Designer blue jeans, brown shoes, a blue jean jacket, and
- 11:20Speaker 2: her blonde hair was pulled back with red and white barettes.
- 11:24Speaker 2: The following Monday morning, a description was put out via
- 11:27Speaker 2: an article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, who buried
- 11:31Speaker 2: the story way down on page sixteen. Christie Tower is
- 11:36Speaker 2: five feet four inches tall. The article detailed, she weighs
- 11:40Speaker 2: one hundred fifteen pounds, has blue eyes and blonde hair.
- 11:45Speaker 2: The description and details, which were scant, were distributed to
- 11:49Speaker 2: all other law enforcement agencies in the surrounding jurisdictions. Meanwhile,
- 11:55Speaker 2: Christie's family was in a panic. This wasn't like her
- 11:59Speaker 2: at all, and they knew something terrible had happened. Billy
- 12:04Speaker 2: Bob's nightclub began insisting their wait staff park close to
- 12:07Speaker 2: a building in a well lit area, and it became policy,
- 12:11Speaker 2: at least for a while, for a bouncer or manager
- 12:14Speaker 2: to walk employees who had worked late to their cars.
- 12:18Speaker 2: The staff there, particularly the waitresses, were terrified and also
- 12:23Speaker 2: saddened by Christie's disappearance. She'd only worked there a short time,
- 12:28Speaker 2: but had already made a big impression. When almost two
- 12:33Speaker 2: weeks had passed with absolutely no new leads, Detective C. W.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Hennan told a reporter on February sixteenth, the longer it goes,
- 12:41Speaker 2: the worse it looks. A couple days later, though, a
- 12:45Speaker 2: lead did come in. On Thursday February seventeenth, nineteen eighty six,
- 12:52Speaker 2: twenty year old Tony Roy Scott and his seventeen year
- 12:56Speaker 2: old wife Sonya were arrested on forgery charges around fourteen
- 13:02Speaker 2: hours after Christy Jean Tower went missing. At four thirty
- 13:05Speaker 2: pm on February fourth, Sonia Scott visited a White Settlement
- 13:10Speaker 2: grocery store and cashed a paycheck. Only the check wasn't hers.
- 13:15Speaker 2: It belonged to Christy Tower. Fort Worth police had since
- 13:19Speaker 2: contacted the missing young woman's bank, asking to phone them
- 13:23Speaker 2: should there be any activity on her account. When the
- 13:27Speaker 2: check finally made its way to them, that's exactly what
- 13:30Speaker 2: they did. Fort Worth police contacted authorities in White Settlement.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Police there contacted the grocery store where the check was
- 13:39Speaker 2: cashed and discovered that it was the store's policy to
- 13:42Speaker 2: photograph folks who were cashing payroll checks. White Settlement police
- 13:47Speaker 2: quickly apprehended both Sonia and her husband Tony Sonia at
- 13:52Speaker 2: the diner where she worked, and Tony as he left
- 13:55Speaker 2: his construction job near General Dynamics. They were placed in
- 13:59Speaker 2: the Tarrant County Jail. Fort Worth detectives thought they'd found
- 14:04Speaker 2: two folks who were at least involved in some capacity
- 14:07Speaker 2: in the disappearance of Christi Tower, but it was only
- 14:11Speaker 2: a dead end. They grilled Tony and Sonya Scott, and
- 14:16Speaker 2: although it became clear the couple had nothing to do
- 14:19Speaker 2: with Christie's disappearance, it turned up a clue. Turns out
- 14:23Speaker 2: Tony came across Christi Tower's black vinyl purse when he
- 14:27Speaker 2: was looking for aluminum to recycle in a dumpster outside
- 14:30Speaker 2: a Camp Bowie Boulevard bar called Cheers in West fort Worth. Still,
- 14:36Speaker 2: they had turned up little to nothing in the initial
- 14:39Speaker 2: investigation into Christie's disappearance, and if the fort Worth Police
- 14:43Speaker 2: had earlier released the information they were about to as
- 14:47Speaker 2: desperation grew, they may have had more leads come their way.
- 14:53Speaker 2: As Christy Jean Tower left Billy Bobbs and began heading
- 14:57Speaker 2: to her car late that night, a witness told them
- 15:00Speaker 2: a man approached her and the two began arguing. This
- 15:04Speaker 2: is the same witness, by all indications, that were reported
- 15:08Speaker 2: seeing Christie leaving for the night right off the bat.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Fort Worth Police Detective C. W. Hennan, who'd been put
- 15:15Speaker 2: in charge of finding Christie, told reporters that this man
- 15:19Speaker 2: had been inside Billy Bob's hitting on other waitresses. Detective
- 15:24Speaker 2: Hennan refused to disclose what the argument was about, but
- 15:28Speaker 2: said it was heated and the man was holding onto
- 15:31Speaker 2: Christie's arm. This man was described as standing about six
- 15:35Speaker 2: feet three inches tall and weighing somewhere around two hundred
- 15:39Speaker 2: and thirty five pounds. He had blonde, unkempt hair, blue eyes,
- 15:44Speaker 2: and a beard, the witness said at the investigation's detriment.
- 15:50Speaker 2: This description of the man wasn't released in the papers
- 15:53Speaker 2: until March tenth, nineteen eighty three, and the composite sketch
- 15:57Speaker 2: created based on it wasn't released to the public until
- 16:01Speaker 2: March eleventh, in the fort Worth Star Telegrams Morning edition.
- 16:05Speaker 2: That's over a month after Christi Tower vanished. In between
- 16:10Speaker 2: the days she was reported missing and the description and
- 16:13Speaker 2: compositees release, Detective Hennon said that he and other investigators
- 16:18Speaker 2: had questioned many area men who fit that description, the
- 16:22Speaker 2: usual suspects, perhaps, but none were involved. Another month went
- 16:28Speaker 2: by with no new leads or developments. On April seventh,
- 16:33Speaker 2: nineteen eighty six, Christi Tower's mom and brother, Jean and Ricky,
- 16:38Speaker 2: arrived in Fort Worth from London, Ontario, Canada. With the
- 16:43Speaker 2: case stalled and Fort Worth detectives making little to know headway,
- 16:47Speaker 2: Gene and Ricky began visiting bars and restaurants throughout Fort
- 16:51Speaker 2: Worth in hopes of turning something over, but nothing came
- 16:55Speaker 2: of their efforts. They'd also brought seventy three year old
- 16:59Speaker 2: psychic You're a Nickel from Millbank, Ontario with them, who
- 17:03Speaker 2: told Jeane Tower that she was positive her daughter was
- 17:06Speaker 2: alive and she'd find Christy if the family would only
- 17:10Speaker 2: take her with them to Texas. I put all my
- 17:14Speaker 2: faith in her, Jean Tower said, not one earthly thing
- 17:18Speaker 2: that woman predicted came true, but she went on. I
- 17:23Speaker 2: was desperate. Christie's mom, her brother, and her sister were
- 17:28Speaker 2: falling apart. Jean often wept. She'd go back home to Canada,
- 17:33Speaker 2: the mother told a reporter, and if Christie wasn't found
- 17:37Speaker 2: within a few months, she'd return and collect her belongings,
- 17:41Speaker 2: hold them for her until she came home. It feels
- 17:45Speaker 2: like all of this is happening to someone else, Christie's
- 17:48Speaker 2: sister Wendy said, I feel like it's a nightmare. Just
- 17:53Speaker 2: a few days later, Christie was found, and the nightmare
- 17:57Speaker 2: her family, unfortunately discovered, was hardly over. On Wednesday, April twentieth,
- 18:14Speaker 2: nineteen eighty three, a landscaping company cleanup crew was removing
- 18:19Speaker 2: trash and other debris from a field on the thirty
- 18:22Speaker 2: one hundred block of Fossil Creek Boulevard. The field was
- 18:26Speaker 2: in far north Fort Worth, just east of Interstate thirty
- 18:30Speaker 2: five and just north of Loop eight twenty. At about
- 18:35Speaker 2: ten fifteen am, a worker on that crew found the
- 18:38Speaker 2: body of a woman laying face down, partially covered by
- 18:42Speaker 2: rocks and other natural debris. The Fort Worth Police were
- 18:46Speaker 2: immediately notified. They arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, as
- 18:51Speaker 2: did the Terrant County Medical Examiner. The body was too
- 18:55Speaker 2: badly decomposed for authorities to identify with any kind of
- 18:59Speaker 2: certain but the clothing the woman wore was telling on
- 19:04Speaker 2: the remains were a white blouse, a blue jean jacket,
- 19:08Speaker 2: one swayed shoe on the left foot, and designer blue
- 19:11Speaker 2: jeans with a small metal plate on the right rear
- 19:14Speaker 2: pocket engraved with the words Billy Bob's. The death of
- 19:20Speaker 2: this woman was deemed a homicide right away, as her
- 19:23Speaker 2: hands were bound behind her back with electrical wire and
- 19:27Speaker 2: another wire was twisted around her neck. Fort Worth Police
- 19:32Speaker 2: detectives combed the field for evidence and clues. The body
- 19:36Speaker 2: was taken to the office of the Arrant County Medical
- 19:39Speaker 2: Examiner for an autopsy scheduled for the following day. It
- 19:43Speaker 2: was an official, but the cops and Christie's family knew.
- 19:48Speaker 2: At the autopsy performed on Thursday, April twenty first, it
- 19:53Speaker 2: was determined that the mostly skeletal remains found in the
- 19:56Speaker 2: North Fort Worth field belonged to someone who died a
- 20:00Speaker 2: asphyxiation by strangulation. The following day, Christy Jean Tower's dental
- 20:06Speaker 2: records arrived from Canada. Those records matched the teeth of
- 20:11Speaker 2: the body. Neither the medical examiner nor the police disclosed
- 20:16Speaker 2: whether or not Christie had been raped, likely it was
- 20:19Speaker 2: impossible to determine. On Tuesday, April twenty sixth, a Crime
- 20:26Speaker 2: Stoppers reward for information leading to the arrest an indictment
- 20:30Speaker 2: of the person or persons responsible for the death of
- 20:33Speaker 2: Christie Tower was posted.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Christy Jean Tower was a waitress at Billy Bob's, Texas.
- 20:41Speaker 1: She worked till closing the night of February fourth. It
- 20:50Speaker 1: was almost three in the morning when Christy punched her
- 20:53Speaker 1: time card. Her car was parked in the back lot,
- 20:56Speaker 1: but a few minutes after she left the building, another
- 20:59Speaker 1: waitress saw her out in front near the phone booths.
- 21:02Speaker 1: She appeared to be arguing with a man.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Your kind's all alike.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Christy never showed up for work the next day, her
- 21:12Speaker 1: car was still in the lot where she normally parked it.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Last Wednesday, the badly decomposed body of Christi Tower was
- 21:20Speaker 1: found near Fossil Drive in fort Worth, just outside Haltam City.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Police want very much to find the man Christy was
- 21:27Speaker 1: last seen talking with. They will pay one thousand dollars
- 21:30Speaker 1: for information that leads to the arrest and indictment of
- 21:33Speaker 1: the person or persons responsible for her death. Just call
- 21:37Speaker 1: crime Stoppers this week at for sixty nine tips. That's
- 21:42Speaker 1: four sixty nine tips.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Still there were no leads and no suspects. The same
- 21:51Speaker 2: day in London, Ontario, Canada, funeral services were held for
- 21:55Speaker 2: Christy and she was laid to rest. Weeks, as in
- 21:59Speaker 2: the case of Christie's disappearance, turned a months with nothing
- 22:03Speaker 2: substantial coming in. Then, on June eleventh of nineteen eighty three,
- 22:09Speaker 2: Texas ranger Phil Ryan arrested a man named Henry Lee
- 22:13Speaker 2: Lucas and charged him with unlawful possession of a firearm.
- 22:17Speaker 2: But that was only the beginning. Authorities in Monteigue County
- 22:22Speaker 2: had been looking for Lucas after the disappearance of his
- 22:25Speaker 2: landlord Kate Rich and the discovery of human bones in
- 22:29Speaker 2: a wood burning stove at his home. When he started
- 22:33Speaker 2: confessing to nearly every unsolved crime an investigator from any
- 22:37Speaker 2: given jurisdiction presented to him, the Fort Worth police caught
- 22:41Speaker 2: the Lucas fever and sought to question him for several
- 22:44Speaker 2: cold cases there. Those cases included that August nineteen eighty
- 22:49Speaker 2: two sexual assault and slang of twenty three year old
- 22:53Speaker 2: Kathy Munroe, a crime that DNA helped convict a man
- 22:56Speaker 2: named Lucky Odom for in two thousand and nine, and
- 23:00Speaker 2: the murder of Christi Tower just several months before Lucas's
- 23:05Speaker 2: arrest and confession spree. It's unclear whether or not Lucas
- 23:10Speaker 2: claimed either of the killings, but presumably he did not,
- 23:14Speaker 2: since neither Kathy nor Christie are listed in Attorney General
- 23:18Speaker 2: Ken Paxton's Lucas report. Fort Worth detectives also questioned Lucas
- 23:23Speaker 2: about two other homicides in the area, but refused to
- 23:27Speaker 2: name the victims in the press. After Lucas was found
- 23:31Speaker 2: to have not been involved in the murder of Christy
- 23:34Speaker 2: Jane Tower, and after another Crimestoppers piece offering a reward
- 23:38Speaker 2: in January of nineteen eighty four ran the news about
- 23:42Speaker 2: her case stopped completely stopped. Other than the handful of
- 23:48Speaker 2: fort Worth Star Telegram newspaper articles about Christie's disappearance and
- 23:53Speaker 2: slang found in archives, there's nothing out there, nothing to google.
- 23:58Speaker 2: At the time. This story was a originally written in
- 24:01Speaker 2: early twenty twenty one. When Glenn Samuel McCurley was arrested
- 24:07Speaker 2: for the abduction, rape, and murder of Carla Walker in
- 24:10Speaker 2: September of twenty twenty, the slang of Christi Tower popped
- 24:14Speaker 2: into my head immediately, as did the nineteen seventy three
- 24:18Speaker 2: abduction and murder of Becky Martin. Now, McCurley didn't have
- 24:23Speaker 2: blonde hair and blue eyes like the man who was
- 24:26Speaker 2: seen flirting with Billy Bob's waitresses and seen arguing with
- 24:30Speaker 2: Christi Tower the last time she was seen alive, but
- 24:33Speaker 2: McCurley was six feet three inches tall and looks to
- 24:37Speaker 2: have steadily weighed the same for quite a while, around
- 24:41Speaker 2: two hundred and forty pounds. Both of those features match
- 24:45Speaker 2: exactly the description of the man arguing with Christi Tower.
- 24:49Speaker 2: As far as the other details of the man's appearance,
- 24:53Speaker 2: mccurley's eyes are brown and his hair dark brown. But
- 24:57Speaker 2: witnesses rarely get everything right. These are hardly the only
- 25:02Speaker 2: reasons to speculate Glenn mccurley's involvement in Christi Tower's murder.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Though Christy was obviously abducted as she attempted to leave
- 25:11Speaker 2: from work at Billy Bob's in North fort Worth, something
- 25:16Speaker 2: terrible happened next. Christy was bound and strangled to death
- 25:20Speaker 2: and then dumped in a field about six miles north
- 25:24Speaker 2: of Billy Bob's. Her purse, at some point was discarded
- 25:28Speaker 2: in the dumpster of a bar called Cheers in West
- 25:31Speaker 2: fort Worth, almost twenty miles from the North fort Worth field.
- 25:35Speaker 2: If you take the easiest, most inconspicuous route by traveling
- 25:40Speaker 2: Loop eight twenty, that bar Cheers is approximately two and
- 25:45Speaker 2: a half miles from where Glenn Samuel McCurley lived at
- 25:48Speaker 2: the time and continued to live until his arrest for
- 25:52Speaker 2: the sexual assault and murder of Carla Walker. If Christy
- 25:57Speaker 2: Towers killer lived in West fort Worth, say on the
- 26:00Speaker 2: same street McCurley lived, and took Loop eight twenty to
- 26:04Speaker 2: get home, dumping her purse and Cheers bar's dumpster would
- 26:08Speaker 2: have been on the way home directly on the way home.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Although current cold case detectives also theorized mccurley's involvement in
- 26:17Speaker 2: Christie's murder, her case remains cold to this day, forty
- 26:21Speaker 2: two years later. She was not the last victim of
- 26:25Speaker 2: the so called February slangs. On Monday February twenty fourth,
- 26:32Speaker 2: nineteen eighty six, at about seven thirty am, on the
- 26:36Speaker 2: thirteen hundred block of Kuroki Street, near Hillside Park in
- 26:40Speaker 2: South Fort Worth, a body was seen by a woman
- 26:43Speaker 2: driving her children to school. The woman at first thought
- 26:48Speaker 2: maybe her eyes had deceived her. She dropped her kids
- 26:51Speaker 2: off at school and drove back past the spot to
- 26:54Speaker 2: make sure she'd seen what she thought she'd seen, and
- 26:58Speaker 2: she certainly had. The woman hurried home and phoned the
- 27:02Speaker 2: Fort Worth Police, who rushed to the scene. The body
- 27:07Speaker 2: belonged to a white female approximately forty years of age,
- 27:11Speaker 2: possibly in her late thirties, and was lying in the
- 27:14Speaker 2: driveway of a vacant lot near the curb. She was
- 27:18Speaker 2: about five feet three inches tall and weighed one hundred
- 27:22Speaker 2: and twenty to one hundred and thirty pounds. The woman's
- 27:25Speaker 2: eyes were green or hazel, Her hair shoulder length and brown.
- 27:31Speaker 2: She had a small scar on the bridge of her
- 27:33Speaker 2: nose and another on her upper right arm. Though the
- 27:37Speaker 2: body was nude, articles of clothing thought to be hers
- 27:41Speaker 2: were found wrapped inside the blanket that partially covered her.
- 27:45Speaker 2: No identification of any kind was found on the scene,
- 27:49Speaker 2: and in fact, evidence there or lack thereof, led police
- 27:54Speaker 2: to believe that the deceased woman had died elsewhere and
- 27:57Speaker 2: was subsequently placed where she was discover An autopsy was
- 28:02Speaker 2: performed the same day the body was found, and the
- 28:05Speaker 2: Terrant County Medical Examiner determined that the woman had been
- 28:09Speaker 2: strangled to death. Although the me told a Fort Worth
- 28:12Speaker 2: Star Telegram reporter that he was awaiting test results to
- 28:16Speaker 2: decide whether the slain woman had been sexually assaulted, that
- 28:20Speaker 2: information never saw print and remains publicly unknown. That's all
- 28:26Speaker 2: that is known about who we'll call Hillside Jane Doe
- 28:29Speaker 2: until she's given her name back. The unidentified woman was
- 28:34Speaker 2: never mentioned alongside the other victims in the February slangs,
- 28:39Speaker 2: and no composite sketch of her was ever released, certainly
- 28:43Speaker 2: limiting the chances of her identity being determined, especially at
- 28:47Speaker 2: the Get Go. She remains featured on the fort Worth
- 28:51Speaker 2: Police Department's Cold Case website today because she was later
- 28:57Speaker 2: determined to have been a sort of high end and
- 29:00Speaker 2: cocaine and methanthetamines dealer. Susan Kilgore's murder, which was discussed
- 29:06Speaker 2: at the top of the episode, was thought to have
- 29:09Speaker 2: been drug related. To be clear, it is not definitively
- 29:13Speaker 2: concluded Susan was a dealer publicly, so we do not
- 29:17Speaker 2: assume it is the indisputable truth. Even if it is.
- 29:22Speaker 2: She deserves justice all the same, but her case, it appears,
- 29:26Speaker 2: remains cold to this day. If you have any information
- 29:33Speaker 2: about the nineteen seventy nine murder of Susan Bowtman Kilgore,
- 29:38Speaker 2: the nineteen eighty three murder of Christy Jean Tower, or
- 29:42Speaker 2: the nineteen eighty six slang of Hillside Jane Doe, please
