- 0:07Thanks for joining us, on beyond the sermon.
- 0:09The podcast of First Methodist Church in Collingswood New
- 0:12Jersey. Our goal is not only to share
- 0:14our sermons, but to go beyond the sermon in conversation about
- 0:18what we're learning and what God is doing in our lives, and in
- 0:21our community, this conversation is inspired by our 2023 sermon
- 0:26series for length, seven deadly sins, the power of God to Move
- 0:30us from death to New Life. He can find more information
- 0:33about our church at fum. See Collingswood, org.
- 0:37Thanks for joining us for this conversation.
- 0:39So, Scott, one of the great questions I receive from Meg and
- 0:44I'll add a little bit to it. What was it like saying the word
- 0:48sex so much from the pulpit and the second service, having to
- 0:54front rows filled with teenagers, awkward at first?
- 0:57I mean, eventually I got into a bit of a Flow with my sermon but
- 1:02especially that first time laying it out there.
- 1:05This is what we're talking about today.
- 1:06We're Jesus didn't beat around the bush about it and so I
- 1:10decided we weren't either and you know and and you mention
- 1:16about the the teenagers but in a lot of ways like those are the
- 1:22ones I had on my mind as I was Prepare and stuff this week not
- 1:29that they're the only ones dealing with issues of sex and
- 1:33sexuality. But they've grown up in such a
- 1:39different context than some of us other Generations where
- 1:42things were more clear-cut that they, I think they've got a lot
- 1:48more wrestling, they're going to have to do and it's gonna cost
- 1:52them more to live according to a Biblical sexual ethic then it
- 1:58has costs other Generations know our kids if they make it through
- 2:05a public high school education, I can almost guarantee you that
- 2:09they know more about things revolving around sex.
- 2:14Even if they haven't had any experience, they have knowledge
- 2:17of a lot more than any of us did ever at that age.
- 2:21Absolutely, yeah. Yeah, no.
- 2:23It's it's very scary and so Sometimes it's awkward to talk
- 2:28about. It's like within my job
- 2:31position. Like there are questions and
- 2:34conversations that are head. Yeah.
- 2:37And I need to be had and need to be head.
- 2:41But there's a layer of awkwardness primarily because
- 2:46I'm talking to minors. Yeah, about it.
- 2:49But I know that they're hearing about it every day, every other
- 2:52day at school, right? So like, don't We're Not Gonna
- 2:56Going to talk about it. That's all they're going to hear
- 2:58about. Yeah.
- 3:00And so that's where it's as uncomfortable as it can be.
- 3:03Sometimes that it's still conversations that need to be
- 3:08had. And, you know, the old old adage
- 3:12of like the birds and the bees and like all that stuff doesn't
- 3:16cut it because their friends are gonna tell him all this time.
- 3:20Where'd you hear that? Where you learned that?
- 3:21Oh Google and then Google this and then yeah.
- 3:24Everything will come up and I don't think ignoring it is
- 3:29really an option anymore. No, I think we owe it to our
- 3:35young people to be willing to have these conversations even
- 3:39though it's hard, and it's awkward and no one particularly
- 3:45wants to have these conversations, but we have to,
- 3:49yeah, we have to, you know, I mentioned towards the end of the
- 3:54sermon like, Like sex can have some life-altering consequences
- 4:01that don't just get taken away just because we're forgiven.
- 4:05Yeah. And so there there's just like a
- 4:07lot of consequences happening out of this desire out of this
- 4:12heart issue as you discussed in the sermon, that's being played
- 4:16out in all of these physical ways.
- 4:19Yeah and it's not just in in singleness either.
- 4:22I mean, you look at the number of Of marriages that end in
- 4:28divorce because of pornography because of infidelity because of
- 4:35unmet needs even. I mean, because we're just not
- 4:38willing to have the conversation and so we go looking elsewhere,
- 4:43you can tell me that, that's not a life-altering consequence,
- 4:47both for the two people involved, but also for their
- 4:52families and their friends and the community that they're part
- 4:56of Out of it it changes things. Yeah.
- 4:59So what's the solution? We just start cutting off
- 5:02people's hands and putting out people's eyes.
- 5:04That's Jesus said right days some days, I think it.
- 5:09And then people say, well, that seems too intense I have.
- 5:12But Jesus is reasoning for. That is pretty valid.
- 5:15Yeah, but somebody came up to me after the service and I remember
- 5:20who it was, I'm just not using their name because I didn't ask
- 5:23him for permission ahead of time.
- 5:24But somebody came up to me, After church and said, do you
- 5:29think Jesus was just toying with the Pharisees?
- 5:33He was kind of poking at them because by saying you know if
- 5:38your hands cutting causing you to sin, cut it off if your eyes
- 5:40causing you to send put it out because they had built so many
- 5:45rules to try to protect themselves from sinning.
- 5:50And Jesus was kind of saying, like, listen, you can do
- 5:53whatever you want to your body. D, it's not going to deal with
- 5:57the issue of the sin, in your heart and ones, God says,
- 6:01created rules that. In addition to the, how many
- 6:04hundreds in the Old Testament 613, in addition to the 613, the
- 6:09Jewish leaders were like, well, I'm not so clear about what it
- 6:12means to actually live these 630.
- 6:14Now, let's clarify by adding more specific rules on how to do
- 6:19it. And so by Jesus time how many
- 6:22were in the talmud like gosh I couldn't tell ya thousands, And
- 6:26it was stuff like the Ten Commandments say you shall honor
- 6:30the Sabbath right and not work on the Sabbath.
- 6:33Hmm. Okay.
- 6:35Well then we need to Define what it is to work.
- 6:39So that way we make sure we don't inadvertently break that
- 6:43guy. And I think there's 39
- 6:45categories that count as work. Oh yeah.
- 6:47According to the town and it was like, you know, you can only
- 6:50walk so far on the Sabbath day. You can eat cold food that you
- 6:56Repaired the day before but you can't heat up food from the day
- 6:59before the stuff like that. So all that to say all that to
- 7:05say the Pharisees created, these rules to protect themselves from
- 7:09breaking the rules and what happens that we used to tell
- 7:13people in Uganda when we were talking about this principle was
- 7:18you know, you might have a goat and you want to protect that
- 7:21goat and so you tie the rope around the go and Hiya to a post
- 7:28or a tree or something to protect that goat from wandering
- 7:31off and doing something. It shouldn't do getting into
- 7:33something that shouldn't be in. But instead of continuing to
- 7:38take care of the goat you start taking care of the Rope though,
- 7:43right? And so any you know you're very
- 7:45careful about what happens to that rope.
- 7:47Meanwhile the goats over here dying of thirst because you
- 7:50never untied it to let it go. Get water.
- 7:53How do we tie this all back to lust?
- 7:55Well, That's the key though. It Jesus, I think is saying
- 7:58here, our Behavior matters. Our actions matter, the things
- 8:02we do matter, but it starts in our hearts.
- 8:07And until we can deal with the sin in our heart, our actions
- 8:11aren't going to be the primary concern Dallas Willard called it
- 8:15a gospel of sin management. You know, we want just enough
- 8:19Jesus to help us to stop all these behaviors.
- 8:23We know are wrong. What Jesus is saying here is no,
- 8:28I want it all. All your whole heart, I want to
- 8:31deal with the stuff that's in there because on our own, we're
- 8:34never going to be able to deal with that said, we're never
- 8:36going to be able to clean up our hearts enough to make it a
- 8:40dwelling place for God. We can't do it.
- 8:43Yeah, that I mean, and I get that Jesus sets a high bar,
- 8:48right? But I don't think Jesus sets
- 8:51this bar that's unattainable for us because he's just trying to
- 8:55rub our Nose in it. I think that's part of what the
- 8:58law was meant to do. The law was given Paul says in
- 9:02Romans, so that we would learn to realize that will never be
- 9:08good enough to keep the law instead of convincing ourselves
- 9:11that we are following it perfectly like some of the
- 9:14Pharisees Reich, the rich, man and Raya.
- 9:17And so we can't do it on our own, we need God to come and do
- 9:24in us. What only I can do and it's in
- 9:29that choice to surrender ourselves to submit ourselves to
- 9:33God, to God's way of life, to how he calls us to live and
- 9:39interact with other people, it's an inviting him to come and do
- 9:42that work in us that he empowers us to live the kind of Life.
- 9:47He's called us to. And when we don't live according
- 9:51to the way he's called us to, you had mentioned about our
- 9:55actions affect. Acting the Holy Spirit.
- 9:58How do our actions affect the Holy Spirit and what versus well
- 10:03versus show? That our actions affect the Holy
- 10:07Spirit. And I think I even that verse
- 10:10that in First Corinthians, so we were really looking at that
- 10:12point. Like, says, do you not know that
- 10:15your uniting Christ or the spirit with a prostitute?
- 10:20Yes, I guess it depends on what I'm thinking about like calls
- 10:25effect. As in like, I do this, it
- 10:29affects the spirit like this. Hmm.
- 10:32Versus like a making the relationship less holy because
- 10:38at least that's how I took it. I mean like in a Ephesians Paul
- 10:42tells us not to grieve the Holy Spirit the spirit within us is
- 10:47grieved when it's in the context of unwholesome talk coming out
- 10:53of our mouths. Yeah.
- 10:54When we allow Bitterness and rage and anger, brawling, and
- 10:58slander to be the fruit that's being produced in our lives.
- 11:02It Grieves, the Holy Spirit, go, hold on, I can cut off to the
- 11:08right there. I think probably when I said
- 11:11that I was mostly thinking in terms of it impacts how the
- 11:15spirit then is able to relate to us.
- 11:18I think that's probably more what I had in my mind because
- 11:21it's in those things that we we lose the sensitivity to What the
- 11:26spirit is, we our hearts become calloused and hardened, the the
- 11:33relationship between Christ and the church between us is often
- 11:38described and used alongside the imagery of a marriage.
- 11:44And so if marriage is so holy and part of God's intention for
- 11:50us, then why can't Catholic priest?
- 11:53Get married. It's good question.
- 11:56That's why I asked because the the Catholic faith kind of
- 11:59stands alone in that position, right?
- 12:03The get there in protestantism, we have no problem.
- 12:06With pastors being married in the Greek and other Eastern
- 12:10Orthodox Churches. They have no problem with that.
- 12:13In fact, I think even to ascend into upper levels, like Bishops
- 12:19and those kind of things in the Eastern Orthodox, you have to be
- 12:22married. And that was true in And like
- 12:27the Old Testament Israelite laws to the priest had to be married
- 12:33but somewhere along the way as you know the church was I guess
- 12:38it was after the church split. So sometime after the split
- 12:43happened between the East and the West, some Bishop somewhere
- 12:46along the way as they were, you know, selling indulgences and
- 12:51all that kind of stuff to raise money to build these great
- 12:53cathedrals in Europe. They They realized that if the
- 12:58priests weren't married, then they wouldn't have kids.
- 13:03And if they didn't have kids, then they'd probably leave their
- 13:05money to the church when they died.
- 13:07And so, you get, I'm and then they couched it in very biblical
- 13:12language. I'm sure.
- 13:14And said, you know, like Paul said, I wish everyone could be
- 13:16single like I am. So they could be fully devoted
- 13:19to the work of God, but if you have to go ahead and get
- 13:23married, you know, and Jesus was single and are we And to be
- 13:26like, Jim right? Exactly.
- 13:28Exactly there, for ya. Hmm.
- 13:31Very interesting. And speaking of Jesus, I've
- 13:34heard of varies conspiracies that Jesus, either had wives or
- 13:38multiple wives, and had multiple kids, where did those come from?
- 13:43And why do you think those conspiracy started?
- 13:47There are some some documents that were written well after the
- 13:52time of Jesus life and even You know, the apostles lives that
- 14:00were written and claimed to be gospels.
- 14:04Like, we know, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John of other of his
- 14:09followers. So you get like, the Gospel of
- 14:11Thomas or the Gospel of Mary, you know, assumedly, Mary
- 14:16Magdalene and, and they would try to fill in some of those
- 14:22gaps that we don't have. So, you get stories in the
- 14:26Thomas about like Jesus, as a kid, picking up a dead bird and
- 14:31blowing on it, and it flying away.
- 14:33And those Thomas the same one. Where he, where he blinds like
- 14:36the whole town. I'm not sure about that one.
- 14:40That's my face. I'm gonna throw that one out
- 14:42there just because my kids love it and it's a lesson of, you
- 14:47know, part of how do we discern? What is true about?
- 14:50Jesus not and so if we, you know, can trust and we go into
- 14:54why we trust the synoptic Gospels.
- 14:56In Matthew, Mark, Luke and John Mackey.
- 14:59Matthew, Mark and Luke sorry. Sorry, John, not one of the
- 15:02synoptic scale. That's okay, right?
- 15:04I'll just cut out that whole section.
- 15:06So I sound smart that why they're why they are trusted and
- 15:11how if it doesn't match the character of Jesus, that's a big
- 15:16Telltale sign that is probably not.
- 15:19And so, I believe it's most likely in Thomas because I think
- 15:23the original intention was people are More likely to
- 15:26believe in Jesus if there's a full well-rounded story and
- 15:31since we don't have stories of his childhood besides being left
- 15:36behind at the one festival and teaching in the temples that
- 15:39this would help to the validity of this story.
- 15:42And one of the stories is Jesus is walking through the
- 15:45marketplace and so on bumps into his shoulder and he kills the
- 15:49person on the spot and the Village People that like
- 15:54witnessed it go to Marion Joseph her like your son can't just
- 15:58kill people for bumping into him in the marketplace and Mary and
- 16:02Joseph, go to Jesus. He can't be killing people in
- 16:05the marketplace for bumping into you, because people saw it and
- 16:09now they're now they're telling us and Jesus goes well, if
- 16:13people can't see, then they won't be able to wrap me out.
- 16:16And so we blinds all the people in the town.
- 16:18Wow. Doesn't sound like the Jesus.
- 16:21We know doesn't sound like, it sounds like some of the kids, I
- 16:24know, but it doesn't sound like the geez.
- 16:26Isis that I know. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:28And so some of these, these false gospels, some of them are
- 16:32part of what's been, what has become known as the Gnostic
- 16:36Gospels. We mentioned gnosticism in
- 16:39church on Sunday. And, you know, these are where
- 16:44some of those stories came into Vogue.
- 16:49I guess you'd say that. Jesus actually either married or
- 16:56had a sexual relationship with Mary Magdalene after she started
- 17:02following him and that he had children.
- 17:06And so you know, a number of years ago, Dan Brown's The
- 17:10DaVinci Code kind of came out and became popular and and part
- 17:18of that story is kind of perpetuating this idea that
- 17:23Jesus had a wife and they had children.
- 17:28And there were still people who were part of the bloodline of
- 17:31Jesus alive in the world today and all that kind of stuff.
- 17:35And so, it crops up every once in awhile, people kind of
- 17:38digging into the, he's, you know, forgotten gospels or these
- 17:44hidden gospels or whatever. But but these documents aren't
- 17:51Aren't even close to on par with what the church is, always
- 17:56considered to be scripture. And again, for good reasonings,
- 18:01sure, distance of time, distance of location, not lining up with
- 18:07everything that we know to be true.
- 18:08Because of you can't just stick the word gospel on something and
- 18:13it automatically becomes scripture, but you can try the
- 18:16gospel of Jeremy. Yeah.
- 18:19Gosh. Anyway, moving on from that.
- 18:21That you know, or talk about some theories about Jesus and
- 18:27I'm curious, you were saying how you wish you knew what Jesus had
- 18:30written in the story of the adulterous woman and John and
- 18:35the saying he's writing in the sand and then the people started
- 18:38walking away and they did in stone the woman.
- 18:41Do you have any good theories that you've heard over the years
- 18:44as to what he wrote? I mean some people have said
- 18:48that, you know, he must have been writing out a list of some
- 18:53of the sins that the people in the circle had committed one.
- 18:59Guess is he was right in that verse that says, if you break
- 19:04any part of the law, you're guilty of breaking the whole law
- 19:09or something along those lines. That would have shown all those
- 19:13Pharisees who were ready to Stone this woman.
- 19:15That They were just as guilty as she was in reality.
- 19:22You know, any other ones that you've heard of the first one
- 19:24you mention is there's the one that always stuck out to me with
- 19:29the story of the adulterous woman.
- 19:31If anyone uses the Bible app, and some physical Bibles will
- 19:36also say, prior to the beginning of that story, I believe it's at
- 19:40the end of chapter 7, it will 753.
- 19:42Yeah, it'll say something to the effect of this story is not
- 19:47found in the earliest manuscripts of John and Then in
- 19:53some of the online versions then that whole story, The adulterous
- 19:57woman is italicized. Yeah.
- 19:59And so curious yeah, even in the Bible I was reading from
- 20:03yesterday. Oh yeah it's 753 2811 is in
- 20:07italics and much smaller font with a little note there that
- 20:12says yeah. This hasn't been found in the
- 20:15earliest manuscripts and therefore people question the
- 20:20authenticity of it, whether it really should be included,
- 20:23there's a part. At the end of Mark's gospel,
- 20:26that's the same way. So how do we, how do we
- 20:31navigate? Those Aunty rights that I think,
- 20:34has been most helpful to me in this and, and he comes down, I
- 20:38mean, he's studied, you know, all of this in the original
- 20:42Greek and all that. Kind of stuff that way is
- 20:46phenomenal. Way above my pay grade and wind
- 20:49combined. Yes but his the point he comes
- 20:55back to is I believe the Bible we have today is the Bible Jesus
- 21:01wanted us to have. And so you know whether I will
- 21:07ever get the satisfaction of knowing whether there was an
- 21:11original manuscript of John Written in John's own hand that
- 21:17included this story and it got taken out pretty quick because
- 21:22it made people uncomfortable. And that's why because we don't
- 21:25have anything that goes back to John himself we have copies of
- 21:29copies and yeah and and those copies we have are incredibly
- 21:34reliable down through the years and they they're consistent.
- 21:39So whether this passage got taken out early, Whether it got
- 21:45added in, you know, by one of his followers somewhere along
- 21:51the way, I don't know. I don't know that I need to
- 21:57know. But I believe that the Bible we
- 22:00have, is the Bible God wanted us to have and that's where I come
- 22:05down on it. Yeah.
- 22:06And I think that's really important to the Bible.
- 22:10We have being the Bible that God wants us to have means that it's
- 22:16still useful for teaching for reproof judge for all of these
- 22:21things. And so we can still learn from
- 22:23that story and it still reflects the character of Jesus.
- 22:28Of not judging and you know the speck in someone else's eye of
- 22:34the plank in your own eye like it doesn't add a teaching that
- 22:38Jesus doesn't share anywhere else in the gospels.
- 22:41Sharm. It's just another example of the
- 22:44same teachings and what I think is really amazing about people
- 22:49being not just aware but also like Bible translators putting
- 22:56that in Bibles I think is Important because people who are
- 23:01they don't believe in scriptures of the validity of the
- 23:04scriptures, a lot of time. The argument is, well,
- 23:07Christians are the ones that have been passing it down so
- 23:09they can make it, say, whatever they want.
- 23:11How do we know what we have now is what was written way back
- 23:16then. And the fact that we have so
- 23:19many thousands of copies of manuscripts and were able to
- 23:23compare and contrast them because they were spread across
- 23:26so many different countries. Is that we can then look back
- 23:30and be like, oh, this may have been added in at some point, but
- 23:34that just shows how congruent the rest of the gospels are
- 23:39that. These are the only two sections.
- 23:41The one you mentioned at the end of Mark and John are the only
- 23:44two sections that we've seen show up a couple hundred years
- 23:50later after the Aurora earliest, manuscripts that we have.
- 23:53But yeah, for me, it just, it all comes back to.
- 23:55We have the Bible. God wanted us to have and that's
- 23:58why. Why we don't necessarily include
- 24:02the intertestamental books, the Apocrypha.
- 24:05It's why. There are other things that were
- 24:07written at that same time. Even within the church, other
- 24:11letters, Paul wrote other letters, Peter wrote James that
- 24:15didn't gain the same kind of acceptance.
- 24:19And therefore, haven't been considered scripture like what
- 24:21we know as first and second Corinthians as probably actually
- 24:25the second and fourth Letters that Paul wrote to the church in
- 24:30Corinth in a series of letters back and forth, I had no idea
- 24:36is. So why was he wrong in the other
- 24:39two? We don't know if what they say
- 24:44that's like some of them have gotten lost but there's internal
- 24:49evidence that says, no, there's something else going on at their
- 24:52to letter. There's a correspondence that's
- 24:54missing here. Yeah yeah.
- 24:57And so. So why that why?
- 25:00These two letters were the ones that were preserved?
- 25:02Well, it's because the church I believe under the inspiration of
- 25:06the spirit understood that there was something different about
- 25:09these letters. These words and they became
- 25:13scripture well that's our conversation for today but that
- 25:17doesn't mean the conversation is over.
- 25:19We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
- 25:22To ask a question about anything we've discussed in this episode
- 25:25or to join the conversation, you can head over to heh.
