- 0:11Hello friends, it's Shawn. Here it is Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 25th of February and would you know that today is
- 0:18actually a Cracker Jack of a day?
- 0:20It is inconvenience yourself day.
- 0:24Yep, this date for the last 20 years has been celebrated as a
- 0:28day to just for a moment, do something that might not be
- 0:32convenient for yourself, but is helpful to someone else.
- 0:35Isn't that a beautiful thing? Just a small act of kindness,
- 0:38even if it costs us something? Because isn't it interesting how
- 0:41we judge everything on how it contributes or detracts from the
- 0:45ease of our own experience? And so this is a g'day to be
- 0:48reminded that actually, it's not about me.
- 0:49It's not about my ease. How about I inconvenience myself
- 0:53for someone else's goodness? And of course you know how to do
- 0:56that in a way that is caring and respectful and just can bring a
- 1:00little bit of joy and light to someone else's day.
- 1:02So there you go. That's our challenge.
- 1:04Inconvenience yourself for someone else's well being.
- 1:08And that is certainly what we are reading about is Hosea being
- 1:13very inconvenienced as he has to say these very awkward words to
- 1:17his people, trying to call them back to fidelity with God.
- 1:21And we are going to continue hearing his calls today as we
- 1:24continue reading through this book of Hosea.
- 1:26So you're ready to do that with me?
- 1:28Oh, Yep, Yep. I think we can do it.
- 1:31All right friends, let us read together.
- 1:32Hosea Chapter 7. I want to heal Israel, but it's
- 1:47sins are too great. Samaria is filled with liars.
- 1:51Thieves are on the inside and bandits on the outside.
- 1:55It's people don't realise that I'm watching them.
- 1:57Their sinful deeds are all around them and I see them all.
- 2:02The people entertain the king with their wickedness and the
- 2:05Princess laugh at their lies. They are all adulterers, always
- 2:10aflame with lust. They are like an oven that is
- 2:13kept too hot while the Baker is kneading the dough.
- 2:16On royal holidays, the Princess get drunk with wine, carousing
- 2:20with those who mock them. Their hearts are like an oven
- 2:23blazing with intrigue. Their plot smoulders through the
- 2:27night, and in the morning it breaks out like a raging fire,
- 2:32burning like an oven. They consume their leaders, they
- 2:36kill their kings one after another, and no one cries to me
- 2:40for help. The people of Israel mingle with
- 2:43godless foreigners, making themselves as worthless as 1/2
- 2:47baked cake. Worshipping foreign gods has
- 2:50sapped their strength, but they don't even know it.
- 2:53Their hair is grey, but they don't realise they are old and
- 2:56weak. Their arrogance testifies
- 2:59against them, yet they don't return to the Lord their God, or
- 3:02even try to find him. The people of Israel have become
- 3:07like silly witless doves, first calling to Egypt, then flying to
- 3:12Assyria for help. But as they fly about, I will
- 3:16throw my net over them and bring them down like a bird from the
- 3:20sky. I will punish them for all the
- 3:23evil they do. What sorrow awaits those who
- 3:27have deserted me? Let them die, for they have
- 3:30rebelled against me. I wanted to redeem them, but
- 3:34they have told lies about me. They do not cry out to me with
- 3:38sincere hearts. Instead they sit on their
- 3:41couches and wail. They cut themselves begging
- 3:44foreign gods for grain and new wine, and they turn away from
- 3:49me. I trained them and made them
- 3:52strong, yet now they plot evil against me.
- 3:57They look everywhere except to the Most High.
- 4:00They are as useless as a crooked bow.
- 4:04Their leaders will be killed by their enemies because of their
- 4:07insolence toward me. Then the people of Egypt will
- 4:11laugh at them. Our Lord, as we hear you crying
- 4:25out to your people to come back to you, you tell them that when
- 4:30things are difficult, they first run to Egypt and then when they
- 4:34don't get help there, they run to a Syria.
- 4:37Our Lord, I wonder what our Egypt and our Syria are.
- 4:40I wonder where the places are that when things first go wrong,
- 4:44when things first become challenging or hard or draining
- 4:47or difficult or not, what we want.
- 4:50Where is it that we turn Because you want us to turn to you.
- 4:56You want us to lean into Your grace and Your provision to get
- 5:00us through our day. We want us to come to you to
- 5:04receive Our Daily Bread, not to dig into some other
- 5:07relationship, some other source in our lives.
- 5:12Our Lord Jesus give us pure hearts that we would look to
- 5:16You, that we would rely on You, and that our relationship with
- 5:22you would be the bedrock of where we find our Wellness and
- 5:26wholeness and our reason to keep going.
- 5:30We are your children, we are your people, and we come before
- 5:34your mighty throne and we worship you and you alone, and
- 5:39we recognise that it's you who rescues us, and not just in some
- 5:43small trivial way, but you have rescued our souls for eternity.
- 5:48And you draw us back to you and you prepare a place for us to
- 5:53come and spend all that eternity with you, basking in your love
- 5:58for us. Ah, we are your loved children,
- 6:02and we thank you and we pray all of this in your mighty and
- 6:05wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
