Lightning season is here—June through August—and it’s deadly serious: 70% of lightning strike deaths happen then. This year alone, 12 fatalities in the U.S., including recent tragedies in Cape Charles and Florida. On average, 20 people die yearly from lightning strikes over the past decade. Lightning is five times hotter than the sun and can strike miles from the storm. When thunder roars, head indoors—cars are safe (thanks to metal shielding) as long as you don’t touch metal inside.
