- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark Review podcast. I'm
- 0:13Speaker 1: Megan and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I'm Wendy. I'm a former Hallmark hater.
- 0:17Speaker 1: On today's episode, we're discussing Falling Into Place, which originally
- 0:20Speaker 1: aired on the Hallmark channel on Saturday, September 12th, 2026,
- 0:24Speaker 1: and is now streaming on Hallmark Plus.
- 0:26Speaker 2: And friends, you're going to want to be.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Bookmarking girlsgonehallmark.com because the Hallmark news is going to be
- 0:32Speaker 1: dropping fast and furious. The website is chock full of information.
- 0:37Speaker 1: We have information about all the movies that are coming out,
- 0:40Speaker 1: plus all of our podcast show notes, deep dives into
- 0:43Speaker 1: the actors. The Countdown to Christmas lineup comes out this week.
- 0:49Speaker 1: It may be out by the time this episode airs.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I doubt it.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I think it'll come out a little later in the week,
- 0:54Speaker 1: but it is coming.
- 0:56Speaker 2: So you're going to hear the full lineup. Apparently there
- 0:59Speaker 2: are 34 movies. Oh, my goodness. That may include Christmas
- 1:05Speaker 2: in July. I'm not sure.
- 1:07Speaker 1: But, you know, don't freak out till we see the list.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Don't freak out till we see the list. Don't freak
- 1:12Speaker 2: out till we see the list. My guess is we're
- 1:15Speaker 2: going to have far fewer series than we had last year.
- 1:17Speaker 2: All we know about is Mistletoe Murders. I know. I'm
- 1:20Speaker 2: looking forward to that. Totally.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'm just, I'm antsy. I want to see the list.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I want to see what we're working with. I want
- 1:27Speaker 1: to make a plan. Okay.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I'm ready. You are ready. I want to talk about
- 1:32Speaker 2: the book club. Oh. Listener Shannon from Australia said, Sent
- 1:38Speaker 2: us a message and she's like, hey, would you guys
- 1:41Speaker 2: do this book for book club? The name escapes me
- 1:45Speaker 2: right now, Megan. What's it called?
- 1:46Speaker 1: Her Night at the Museum, which is the book that
- 1:51Speaker 1: A Night to Remember is based on. And I have
- 1:54Speaker 1: to stop and think about the book movie titles every
- 1:56Speaker 1: single time.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yes, but we have a Facebook group for that. And
- 1:59Speaker 2: if you want to jump in.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It is separate from our main Girls Gone Hallmark Facebook group.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And if you were part of the Paris is always
- 2:07Speaker 1: a good idea book club, we're doing it a little
- 2:09Speaker 1: bit differently. Paris is always a good idea. We broke
- 2:10Speaker 1: down into three different discussion segments. We're just going to
- 2:13Speaker 1: be doing one discussion for this book. And it's the
- 2:16Speaker 1: Wednesday before the movie airs. So there's still time to
- 2:18Speaker 1: get in on that, join the conversation. And we're definitely
- 2:21Speaker 1: going to do at least one for the countdown to
- 2:24Speaker 1: Christmas season. And I'm thinking it'll be Christmas in Blue
- 2:26Speaker 1: Dog Valley, which I think is the Andrew Walker... Aaron
- 2:32Speaker 1: Cahill movie.
- 2:33Speaker 2: You're just pulling from memory here. I think.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Am I completely making that up? I'm not going to
- 2:38Speaker 1: fact check it at all. I mean, I will after
- 2:39Speaker 1: this episode, but not right now.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Okay. No, I love it. I downloaded the night book. Yeah.
- 2:47Speaker 2: And somebody had told us it was real spicy. Yes.
- 2:50Speaker 2: And I started listening to it while I'm driving and
- 2:53Speaker 2: something real spicy was said. Wow.
- 2:55Speaker 1: It like literally was like 40 seconds in. I was like,
- 2:57Speaker 1: holy crap.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Oh, wow. I was like, what's Hallmark going to do here?
- 3:03Speaker 1: They're just going to really tame it down.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 3:06Speaker 1: That's to be expected. Look, as we recall, Birding with
- 3:10Speaker 1: Benefits became Adventures in Birding. Birding with Benefits had some
- 3:13Speaker 1: spice to it. So I have heard some feedback about
- 3:17Speaker 1: this book. Slog was the word I read.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yes. Another viewer said, another listener said this was a
- 3:23Speaker 2: DNF for them. I did not finish. Oh, really? So. Oh,
- 3:28Speaker 2: that's too bad. I have, I've heard, I've heard a
- 3:31Speaker 2: variety of. feedback.
- 3:33Speaker 1: But yes, it is spicy. Yes, we are reading it. Yes,
- 3:36Speaker 1: we are discussing it. So we will leave a link
- 3:38Speaker 1: to the Girls Gone Hallmark.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Book club and you can join at any time for sure.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Let's hear a synopsis for falling into place. Kaya returns
- 3:44Speaker 2: home for her town's fall festival as well as her
- 3:48Speaker 2: high school reunion and spends the week with her childhood
- 3:51Speaker 2: best friend James to complete their unfinished fall bucket list.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Angie Nolan directed Falling Into Place, marking her Hallmark directorial debut.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Nolan is a participant in Hallmark's Make Her Mark program,
- 4:05Speaker 1: an initiative designed to support and develop emerging female directors.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Ansley Gordon wrote the script. Her other Hallmark projects include
- 4:12Speaker 2: the recent Aussie at Heart and Love Under the Mistletoe.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Alvina August stars as Kaya. Alvina has 28 acting credits
- 4:19Speaker 1: with roles in Tracker and Zoe's Extraordinary Playlist. Her last
- 4:23Speaker 1: time on Hallmark was in 2022 in the movie A
- 4:26Speaker 1: Second Chance at Love.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Nathan Witt stars as James. Nathan was recently part of
- 4:31Speaker 2: Texas Two-Step, as well as all four of the unwrapping
- 4:35Speaker 2: Christmas movies from 2024. Stephanie Bennett appears as friend Harper.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Stephanie has appeared in several Hallmark favorites like The Nine
- 4:44Speaker 2: Kittens of Christmas and Hearts Around the Table.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Do you think Stephanie Bennett should be a lead?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yes. I think so, too. She's always playing bestie. Was
- 4:54Speaker 2: she really pregnant in this role? I'd buy it. Yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 2: me too. BJ Harrison plays Gigi with 153 acting credits.
- 5:01Speaker 2: We last saw BJ in Texas Two-Step and I'll Be
- 5:05Speaker 2: Seeing You.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Jeff Gustafson plays Ben. Hallmark fans will recognize Jeff from
- 5:10Speaker 1: his longtime role as Norman in the beloved Signed, Sealed,
- 5:13Speaker 1: Delivered franchise, which also marked his most recent Hallmark appearance
- 5:18Speaker 1: in 2025. Hey, Wendy, what was your first impression of
- 5:22Speaker 1: Falling Into Place?
- 5:24Speaker 2: If you're the Hallmark viewer who says, I don't care
- 5:27Speaker 2: what happens. Just give me sweaters, pumpkins, and fall vibes. Congratulations.
- 5:31Speaker 2: This is your Super Bowl. Hey, we have similar vibes.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Mine is.
- 5:36Speaker 1: It only took four movies. But finally, the fall vibes
- 5:38Speaker 1: we have been waiting all season four have arrived.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Did your husband watch this with you? No, not yet.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Because we watched it before it aired. So he's going
- 5:47Speaker 2: to watch it this weekend. It's going to hit all
- 5:49Speaker 2: his vibe check marks. Yeah. Check boxes. Yeah. Yeah. You
- 5:53Speaker 2: know what I mean? He's like, is it really fall?
- 5:55Speaker 1: And I said, oh boy, is it?
- 5:59Speaker 2: Okay, can we talk about that? I think we might
- 6:03Speaker 2: have different takes on it. Really?
- 6:05Speaker 1: Well, mine's positive.
- 6:08Speaker 2: So is mine.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Okay, good. You know, if the assignment was fall, mission accomplished.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Absolutely. Great job. It looks like fall. We got a
- 6:15Speaker 2: fall festival. We got cider donuts, scarecrows, flowers, even though like.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a lot of faux fall.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Faux, faux fall.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I'm okay with that, though, because I think I'd rather
- 6:27Speaker 1: this level of faux fall than another Fall Into Love
- 6:30Speaker 1: 2026 movie that shall remain at this moment where it
- 6:33Speaker 1: was really phoned in. Like, let's put a sprig of
- 6:37Speaker 1: fall leaves in this tree and call it fall so
- 6:40Speaker 1: that there's a hint of fall in the background. I think,
- 6:42Speaker 1: not to beat a dead horse here, but it is
- 6:44Speaker 1: Fall Into Love, and I was happy with to see.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Them bring us the fall. I got to tell you,
- 6:50Speaker 2: while watching, I was like, you know what? I really
- 6:52Speaker 2: want to turn down the AC and grab a blanket
- 6:55Speaker 2: and turn on a pumpkin scented candle and drink me
- 6:59Speaker 2: a pumpkin spice latte. Like it was, I was like, ready.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I'm ready. I'm ready. I'm ready.
- 7:04Speaker 1: You're like, let's go to Trader Joe's and get those
- 7:05Speaker 1: apple cider donuts, baby.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Exactly. So it did what it needed to do. Yeah.
- 7:11Speaker 1: This movie earns its place in the fall into love lineup.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Though when they're at the apple orchard. Yeah. Are those?
- 7:18Speaker 1: That's what an apple orchard looks like.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I've never been apple picking.
- 7:21Speaker 1: That's what it looks like.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Like those bright red apples like that right there. Those
- 7:26Speaker 2: weren't fake. I don't know about the apples themselves, but
- 7:29Speaker 2: the orchard, like it's at eye level.
- 7:31Speaker 1: It's not big.
- 7:33Speaker 2: The local orchards here, like you can, that's what it
- 7:36Speaker 2: looks like. But are they like red apples that are
- 7:38Speaker 2: just like hanging there, ready to go? They were shiny.
- 7:41Speaker 2: That's why I feel like they're not. Well, they're not
- 7:43Speaker 2: shiny because they're growing on a tree. Like grocery store
- 7:46Speaker 2: apples are not from nature.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:49Speaker 2: So they may have, I honestly didn't notice the apples themselves. Oh, okay.
- 7:53Speaker 1: But the trees were accurate. They may have, they may
- 7:56Speaker 1: have planted some apples because of course apple season is
- 7:59Speaker 1: short and I don't know when this was filmed and.
- 8:01Speaker 2: If it was filmed. Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Prior to this time of year, which I assume it
- 8:05Speaker 1: was not filmed in 2025, probably the orchard was not blooming.
- 8:10Speaker 2: So you think those are potentially fake? Full apple.
- 8:12Speaker 1: But it did seem like a real apple orchard.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Okay. Tell me what else you liked.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Well, I'm happy to see Nathan Witt in a leading
- 8:18Speaker 1: role here. Loved him in Texas Two-Step and he has
- 8:21Speaker 1: this million watt smile that is so endearing on screen.
- 8:25Speaker 1: He has several moments in this movie where he's just
- 8:27Speaker 1: so charming. There's a moment where he goes, I see
- 8:30Speaker 1: you missed me too. And he does like finger guns
- 8:32Speaker 1: and he's just... a sweetheart. And it comes through on
- 8:36Speaker 1: screen and there's no conflict. And that goes to the
- 8:39Speaker 1: storytelling here too. Like there's no enemies to lovers. I
- 8:42Speaker 1: wouldn't buy it.
- 8:42Speaker 2: If there was, because he's just a good guy.
- 8:46Speaker 1: After Texas Two-Step, I was like.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Wait, why isn't Nathan Witt in the leading role here?
- 8:50Speaker 2: Why wasn't he?
- 8:51Speaker 1: No shade to Brandon Penny. Loved Brandon Penny in Texas Two-Step,
- 8:54Speaker 1: bringing the heat, but happy to see him as the lead.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Yeah, me too. I agree with you. I think he's
- 9:00Speaker 2: Charming and funny and nice to look at. This is
- 9:03Speaker 2: sort of a... I don't think the material was that exciting. No.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I think he was doing some of the heavy lifting
- 9:11Speaker 2: in the charm department. Absolutely. Really sell me on James
- 9:16Speaker 2: and this situationship and... Whatever. You can see where this
- 9:23Speaker 2: is going, guys, for me personally.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about B.J. Harrison because I always have
- 9:28Speaker 1: a B.J. Harrison moment on my screen. And this was
- 9:31Speaker 1: no exception for me when Gigi opens the door. It's
- 9:34Speaker 1: just like a warm hug on screen. And I particularly
- 9:38Speaker 1: liked that her character was warm and supportive and she
- 9:42Speaker 1: offers advice that guides Kaya to make her own choices
- 9:48Speaker 1: without offering judgment on her choices.
- 9:50Speaker 2: I agree.
- 9:51Speaker 1: She says things like, if it doesn't light you up,
- 9:53Speaker 1: maybe it's not for you.
- 9:55Speaker 2: And I'm doing that little clap. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:58Speaker 1: It's very much of it's not a hell.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Yes, it's a no. Yeah, totally. And I appreciated that.
- 10:03Speaker 1: She does like lightly give Kaya some shit about being
- 10:06Speaker 1: on her phone a lot for work, but it's not
- 10:08Speaker 1: a through line. She's not really guilting her into making
- 10:12Speaker 1: a choice about changing her job. She's just trying to
- 10:14Speaker 1: kind of gently steer her towards what she really wants.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And I love that in the character. I thought that
- 10:20Speaker 1: character was really well written. I had a really great dialogue,
- 10:24Speaker 1: great advice. Like you said, it was like this steering,
- 10:27Speaker 1: not like this judgy advice giver.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I loved all that. Here's my concern. Is B.J. Harrison being,
- 10:35Speaker 2: I don't want to say typecast, but she falls into
- 10:38Speaker 2: the category that Barbara Niven falls into or there's like...
- 10:42Speaker 2: Laura Soltis. Or Laura Soltis. That's a great, another great example. Yeah.
- 10:47Speaker 1: What would you want?
- 10:48Speaker 2: Would you want B.J. Harrison in a lead role? Are
- 10:51Speaker 2: you afraid that, like, do you want her to have
- 10:53Speaker 2: her second chance romance? No.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I did love her in I'll Be Seeing You.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Great. I loved seeing this, like... female friendship dynamic in
- 11:03Speaker 2: that movie.
- 11:03Speaker 1: That was fantastic. I would love to see more roles
- 11:06Speaker 1: like that.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I would love to see movies made for mature women
- 11:12Speaker 2: that are at the center of the storytelling.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Well, I think what I'll Be Seeing You does that
- 11:17Speaker 1: this movie doesn't is that it really fleshes out the
- 11:20Speaker 1: supporting characters and gives them their own identities. And I'm
- 11:24Speaker 1: going to talk about that more in my wishes.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Okay. Okay. But do I think no, I just think
- 11:29Speaker 2: she's she's the go to actress for this role, just
- 11:33Speaker 2: like Barbara Nevin is just like Laura Solstice is this
- 11:36Speaker 2: kind of mature maternal figure. And it's not that I
- 11:40Speaker 2: don't want to see B.J. Harrison. It's just like, are
- 11:43Speaker 2: there any other women out there that could audition for
- 11:46Speaker 2: this role? It's not a negative. I hear what you're saying.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I hear what you're saying. Like, do we have a
- 11:52Speaker 1: deep bench of mature actors? And I think the answer
- 11:54Speaker 1: is no.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I think the answer is no. And I know they're
- 11:57Speaker 2: out there. Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 1: And then such a hard thing to say too, because
- 12:00Speaker 1: we say that about Barbara Niven too, but I'm always
- 12:03Speaker 1: happy to see Barbara Niven on my screen. I'm always
- 12:05Speaker 1: happy to see BJ Harrison on my screen, but yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Where are our actors of a certain age?
- 12:13Speaker 1: Well, while I'm running down the cast, I, Jeff Gustafson,
- 12:17Speaker 1: when he comes on screen, I texted Wendy in all caps.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I was like, Norman, what a delight.
- 12:25Speaker 2: So glad I got to see him in this. I
- 12:28Speaker 2: noticed that one of the producers was Linda Lisa Hader,
- 12:33Speaker 2: who directed a ton of the SSD movies. And I thought, oh,
- 12:38Speaker 2: maybe that's the connection here. Why Jeff's in this or whatever.
- 12:42Speaker 2: But Gosh, it made me miss Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Truly,
- 12:46Speaker 2: it did. And I thought, maybe I need to do
- 12:48Speaker 2: a rewatch of some of those. I thought so too.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And I have been.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Feeling like rewatchy. I haven't actually done any rewatch, but
- 12:55Speaker 1: I have been building a list of Hallmark Fall titles
- 12:58Speaker 1: that I'd like to rewatch. I'm going to actually publish
- 13:01Speaker 1: it on Instagram because I'm feeling like I need to
- 13:05Speaker 1: lean into some of those cozy moments. Like, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 1: Gilmore Girls, everyone calls a fall rewatch. But what are
- 13:12Speaker 1: our Hallmark fall rewatches? Keep an eye on Girls Gone
- 13:15Speaker 1: Hallmark Instagram.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I'm excited. I got some ideas. I'm excited to see
- 13:18Speaker 2: your list. And of course, Hall of the Halloween is
- 13:20Speaker 2: on there, but it's not. It's some obvious ones, but
- 13:23Speaker 2: some are more vibey. Give me a name right now.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Providence Falls. Really?
- 13:30Speaker 1: I think that's the perfect fall rewatch.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Was that last year? That was last year we watched that.
- 13:35Speaker 2: A little moody. Mm-hmm. Got it. Got it.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Well, okay.
- 13:39Speaker 2: I mean, I just gave away my whole list. That's
- 13:41Speaker 2: not your whole list. I'm dying to see the rest
- 13:43Speaker 2: of it. I have one last wish. Mm-hmm. Like.
- 13:47Speaker 1: You're right.
- 13:48Speaker 2: One last.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Sorry for jumping ahead. I have one last like.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I do think there is a good message buried underneath
- 13:56Speaker 2: all of this movie. Oh, me too. Yes. You know,
- 13:59Speaker 2: we have our main Kaya who has reached this place
- 14:01Speaker 2: in adulthood that, you know, is... I don't want to
- 14:05Speaker 2: say hashtag no fun, but she's business, right? You know,
- 14:09Speaker 2: she's like tied to her phone. She doesn't want to
- 14:11Speaker 2: miss a phone call from her boss. There's a corner
- 14:14Speaker 2: office potentially waiting for her trope that drives me absolutely bonkers.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I do love that we get Gigi telling her like, hey,
- 14:23Speaker 2: you've kind of lost your spark a little bit. Like,
- 14:25Speaker 2: where's that girl? You know, and there she is. So
- 14:29Speaker 2: the message there is, to me is like adulthood becomes
- 14:35Speaker 2: a game of like being productive and responsible.
- 14:37Speaker 1: And like we start to lose the fun in adulthood.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Yes. And so I liked that message. Do I like
- 14:46Speaker 2: the execution of it with the bucket list? No, I'm
- 14:49Speaker 2: going to talk about it in my wishes, but I
- 14:52Speaker 2: like the message, especially someone like me who I I
- 14:56Speaker 2: really feel like I lack a lot of joy and
- 14:58Speaker 2: fun in my everyday life and feel very productive. And
- 15:01Speaker 2: I just want to talk about the schedule and what's
- 15:03Speaker 2: next and what are we doing and have my plan.
- 15:06Speaker 1: And I don't.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Take the moment for like just vibing out in that.
- 15:14Speaker 2: You know what I'm talking about?
- 15:15Speaker 1: That is so hard because last night my daughter comes
- 15:19Speaker 1: downstairs and I'm sitting in my office working and it's
- 15:22Speaker 1: nighttime and she's like, I just needed a brain break
- 15:23Speaker 1: from studying. And I am such a to-do list oriented
- 15:28Speaker 1: person that I'm like, oh, she's in front of me. Like,
- 15:29Speaker 1: let me run down.
- 15:31Speaker 2: And I had some school related things to talk to
- 15:33Speaker 2: her about.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And she just looked at me. She goes, that was
- 15:36Speaker 1: not a break. And she walked out of the room.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Like she answered my questions, but she was like, she
- 15:40Speaker 2: came down here just to hang for a few minutes.
- 15:43Speaker 1: And she was not, she's like, I don't.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Sense the tone lady.
- 15:47Speaker 1: And I felt so, I was like a little bit amusing,
- 15:50Speaker 1: but then I felt bad, but that is who I am.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I think you and I thrive in that kind of like,
- 15:56Speaker 1: here's what, what makes us feel in control.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Yes.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, that's going to make me feel good
- 16:01Speaker 1: to feel like I've accomplished getting this information that I need.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Right. Like this is a conversation that we need.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Similarly, when it comes to the messaging of this movie,
- 16:09Speaker 1: there's a lot of talk about the next right step.
- 16:13Speaker 1: And they contrast that with the idea that her commitment
- 16:16Speaker 1: to her job has cost her the ability to do
- 16:18Speaker 1: some of the things that she wanted to do. And
- 16:20Speaker 1: for me, I think an important message, which is going
- 16:26Speaker 1: to sound like a negative, but is you cannot have
- 16:29Speaker 1: it all. And I think trying to have it all
- 16:33Speaker 1: is to be in pursuit of disappointment. Because I do
- 16:39Speaker 1: think there has to be a compromise. There has to be,
- 16:42Speaker 1: in this case, she needed to change directions in her
- 16:47Speaker 1: job in order to have the joy in her life
- 16:49Speaker 1: and the relationships in her life that she wanted. And
- 16:52Speaker 1: so I like the idea of the next right thing
- 16:55Speaker 1: is I don't have it all figured out. I just
- 16:58Speaker 1: need to know in the immortal words of Chad Bartlett,
- 17:01Speaker 1: what's next.
- 17:02Speaker 2: And I liked that messaging.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Finally, I do think Overall, this movie does a perfectly
- 17:08Speaker 1: fine job of executing the classic Hallmark fall movie, strong
- 17:10Speaker 1: fall vibes, strong sense of fall activities, a friends to
- 17:14Speaker 1: more romance that you can root for. It's far preferable
- 17:18Speaker 1: to when he's making a face, enemies to lovers, or
- 17:22Speaker 1: I think for me, this lifelong friendship turning into more
- 17:26Speaker 1: in an 84 minute format is easier to root for
- 17:30Speaker 1: than an enemies to lovers, than a new romance believable
- 17:35Speaker 1: in the span of a week.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I would agree with that.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Let us take a break and come back to talk
- 17:41Speaker 1: about our wishes. Hey, Wendy, what did you wish for? Unfortunately,
- 17:54Speaker 1: I have a long list. Here's my big wish.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Okay.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Kaya and James both have people in their corner. But
- 18:03Speaker 1: as we go down the line, they're increasingly one-dimensional. And
- 18:07Speaker 1: we start with Gigi, who I think is the character
- 18:09Speaker 1: who's most fleshed out. We know that she had a
- 18:12Speaker 1: role in raising Kaya. We know that it's time for
- 18:14Speaker 1: her to move on to her next right thing and
- 18:16Speaker 1: find her community and dig into retirement. But then we
- 18:21Speaker 1: move down to Harper, who.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Bestie. Pregnant Bestie. Pregnant Bestie.
- 18:25Speaker 1: We know she has a husband.
- 18:26Speaker 2: We know she has a daughter.
- 18:27Speaker 1: We know she was the high school class president. But
- 18:30Speaker 1: we don't really have a sense of who she is,
- 18:32Speaker 1: what's going on with her. We just have these kind of.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Identifiers. And then, uh, worst of them all is Ben
- 18:41Speaker 1: played by Jeff Gustafson. We know that he's James's friend
- 18:45Speaker 1: and coworker and they support each other and he rides
- 18:48Speaker 1: hard for the, rides hard for the James and Kaya romance,
- 18:52Speaker 1: but we don't know anything about who he is.
- 18:55Speaker 2: And I, I, your point about BJ Harrison and I'll
- 18:59Speaker 2: be seeing you it makes it perfectly because in that case,
- 19:03Speaker 2: she is a supporting character, but she has this very
- 19:07Speaker 2: strong backstory and this very, you're rooting for her.
- 19:11Speaker 1: You're invested in her. You care about what she's doing.
- 19:13Speaker 1: She's not simply a mirror for the other characters. And
- 19:17Speaker 1: if we're going to introduce these people, I want to
- 19:20Speaker 1: care about them. And I don't simply want them to
- 19:23Speaker 1: be a person with whom our lead character exchanges dialogue.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Got it. I agree, especially good point. On the character
- 19:32Speaker 2: of Ben, really know nothing about him. Nothing.
- 19:36Speaker 1: He doesn't exist outside of his relationship with James in
- 19:39Speaker 1: this movie.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Disappointing.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Let's dig into your wishes.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Okay. Tropes on tropes on tropes on tropes. Sure. We
- 19:47Speaker 2: knew this going in because we even like talked about it.
- 19:50Speaker 2: it in our fall preview. We did. Movie. This one
- 19:54Speaker 2: almost feels like, you know, it's a, it's a walking
- 19:58Speaker 2: bingo card.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yes.
- 20:01Speaker 2: And I can buy some of it. It was like,
- 20:05Speaker 2: we're going to sell the childhood home. Yeah. We're trying
- 20:09Speaker 2: to do this bucket list. We're... It was so many things.
- 20:15Speaker 2: So many, so many things. And then it was the
- 20:19Speaker 2: unfinished bucket list from the teenage years that I was like, yikes.
- 20:25Speaker 2: You liked it? It didn't bother me. It felt too
- 20:29Speaker 2: juvenile to me. And we have.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Two adults who are like, oh, I can't believe it's
- 20:34Speaker 1: our 20 year.
- 20:35Speaker 2: This puts them in almost 40. Yeah. Yeah. And they're
- 20:41Speaker 2: trying to finish this bucket list that they made as teenagers.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Why are we committing to finishing this list? One, that's
- 20:48Speaker 2: what I really didn't understand. Like, why are we trying
- 20:51Speaker 2: to capture this moment in time? Yes.
- 20:55Speaker 1: This is from the person who recently made a list
- 20:59Speaker 1: of things.
- 21:00Speaker 2: To create more whimsy in my life because I am
- 21:02Speaker 2: no fun. So yes. Yeah. Yeah. But I wouldn't go back.
- 21:07Speaker 2: I think adult Wendy, Wendy in 2026 is so much
- 21:12Speaker 2: different than Wendy in 1993. Same.
- 21:15Speaker 1: I don't think I would be in pursuit of the
- 21:19Speaker 1: same things.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Sure. Yeah. I hear that. I do hear that. I
- 21:24Speaker 2: think it would... Here's my critique. I think it would
- 21:27Speaker 2: have been better if they used this bucket list as
- 21:30Speaker 2: a starting point. And then you start to realize like, oh,
- 21:35Speaker 2: my teenage self or my adult self doesn't want the
- 21:41Speaker 2: same things I wanted as my teenage self. Well, here's
- 21:44Speaker 2: actually what I think. I think you're right about that.
- 21:46Speaker 2: But I think when you look at the bucket list
- 21:48Speaker 2: items that they're completing, the bucket list kind of was written...
- 21:53Speaker 2: Our 16 year olds like.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Get the secret apple cider donut recipe and bake apple
- 21:58Speaker 1: cider donuts. That feels like a very adult thing to do.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Make Mr.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Winters. Is that his name? Yeah.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Make Mr. Winters smile. Win King and Queen of the
- 22:09Speaker 1: Harvest Festival, whatever it is. That it to me felt like.
- 22:14Speaker 1: They were written, build a scarecrow. It just didn't feel
- 22:17Speaker 1: like these were the 16-year-old bucket list ideas.
- 22:21Speaker 2: They didn't seem authentic to what a teenager would write down. No,
- 22:24Speaker 2: I mean, it felt very natural for them to be
- 22:26Speaker 2: doing these things as an adult. So it almost was
- 22:29Speaker 2: like they... Of course, this bucket list was created for
- 22:33Speaker 2: this movie. So it just feels.
- 22:36Speaker 1: maybe too obvious that it was created for this movie.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Like I think, I think, and maybe I'm wrong, but
- 22:41Speaker 1: I think you're looking at it from the perspective of like,
- 22:43Speaker 1: I don't want to do the stuff I wanted to
- 22:45Speaker 1: do when I was 16. And I'm looking at it
- 22:46Speaker 1: from the perspective of, I don't, with that in mind,
- 22:49Speaker 1: I don't think that really these were on their 16
- 22:52Speaker 1: year old bucket list. Like kids are probably more fun
- 22:54Speaker 1: than this.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Like what I think is fun. What I think is
- 22:59Speaker 2: fun is not the same thing as what my kid
- 23:01Speaker 2: thinks is fun.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I have a 16 year old. She's not going to
- 23:04Speaker 1: think any of this is fun.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Yeah. This bucket list thing didn't really... It didn't land
- 23:09Speaker 2: for you. You weren't excited about it. I'm not excited
- 23:12Speaker 2: watching these two adults pursue completion of this bucket list. No. What?
- 23:18Speaker 2: Is there something you would have rather them do? I
- 23:21Speaker 2: don't know. Yeah. It just wasn't landing for you. This particular.
- 23:25Speaker 3: No, I just feel like there's so many other movies
- 23:30Speaker 3: that are better, better executed, better storytelling.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:36Speaker 1: I mean, I, I, I, I do agree with that. Look,
- 23:39Speaker 1: I thought this movie, like I said, in my likes,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I thought it was perfectly fine. Like I think it
- 23:43Speaker 1: fits really into the classic Hallmark fall movie, fall activities.
- 23:49Speaker 2: They kiss at the end, sweet little romance. trope of
- 23:52Speaker 2: it all. But you're right. I don't think this movie
- 23:56Speaker 2: is pushing the envelope or doing anything surprising. I know.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Sometimes I know there's the viewer who just loves the escapism,
- 24:04Speaker 2: who loves the comfort watch. But for me, I feel
- 24:08Speaker 2: like my expectations are high from week to week because
- 24:12Speaker 2: I have seen some exceptional movies at this point. Mm-hmm.
- 24:18Speaker 2: in our Hallmark career. And so that's, that's the, where
- 24:22Speaker 2: the bar is at for me. And when we get
- 24:27Speaker 2: a movie of this caliber, you know, I, the hater
- 24:32Speaker 2: kind of like comes out in me a little bit. Right.
- 24:34Speaker 1: You don't want those exceptional movies to be the exception.
- 24:37Speaker 1: You want them to be the rule.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Moving on this movie, please stop telling
- 24:44Speaker 2: me about the relationship I'm supposed to be watching this
- 24:48Speaker 2: movie relied so heavily on exposition. There were numerous conversations of,
- 24:55Speaker 2: remember when we did this and then you did this
- 24:58Speaker 2: and then that happened and then this happened? Remember when
- 25:01Speaker 2: we did this and I was like, oh, my God. Like,
- 25:04Speaker 2: I don't know how you fix that. I'm not a
- 25:06Speaker 2: writer for movie movies, nor am I a director. And
- 25:10Speaker 2: I don't mean to like shit on anybody's art. I'm
- 25:14Speaker 2: truly at coming as like just like a viewer who
- 25:17Speaker 2: wants more. Right. And I don't know how they would
- 25:20Speaker 2: have done it. You know, they're trying to establish that
- 25:23Speaker 2: they have this long history together and, you know, whatever.
- 25:26Speaker 2: But it was not working for me. It was not working.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And some of their dialogue felt very transactional. I thought
- 25:37Speaker 2: Kaya and James had their dialogue to me was reading
- 25:45Speaker 2: it off the page until the very end. It was
- 25:49Speaker 2: the very end scene that I was like, oh, there's
- 25:52Speaker 2: this couple that I can root for. But it was
- 25:54Speaker 2: not until the final scene.
- 25:56Speaker 1: So I know that you haven't listened to our interview
- 25:58Speaker 1: with Alvina August and Nathan Witt, but Alvina said in
- 26:02Speaker 1: that interview, I asked about the scene. What scene was
- 26:06Speaker 1: the one where they felt their characters went from friends
- 26:08Speaker 1: to something more? And they talk about the dinner slash
- 26:12Speaker 1: fire pit scene, which I think is obviously the right
- 26:14Speaker 1: answer there. But what Alvina said was that they were
- 26:17Speaker 1: able to have some input in that scene. And She,
- 26:22Speaker 1: I'm not going to put words in her mouth, but
- 26:24Speaker 1: she said, you know, at some point having all that
- 26:26Speaker 1: dialogue feels a little bit stiff. And she wasn't saying
- 26:29Speaker 1: that the writing was stiff, but I think she was
- 26:32Speaker 1: acknowledging that if you're going to have this relationship. appear
- 26:37Speaker 1: to become more it can't happen purely on the basis
- 26:39Speaker 1: of dialogue which is why they added in that dance
- 26:42Speaker 1: moment and that was probably my favorite scene well and
- 26:45Speaker 1: she even says in the interview she's like that dance
- 26:48Speaker 1: is like a staple in black weddings and so it
- 26:50Speaker 1: was very important for us to represent this relationship she's
- 26:54Speaker 1: like that's going to be a recognizable moment for viewers
- 26:57Speaker 1: watching this and so I hearing her say that hearing
- 27:02Speaker 1: you say like the dialogue felt very transactional and then
- 27:06Speaker 1: I think I like that they were able to, that scene,
- 27:10Speaker 1: that dance felt like a real moment. And maybe we
- 27:17Speaker 1: didn't get enough of those. I would agree 100%.
- 27:23Speaker 2: We have been saying for years, especially this last two years,
- 27:31Speaker 2: that we need more diversity in our homework movies. Yes.
- 27:36Speaker 2: We finally get a movie with lead actors who are
- 27:41Speaker 2: people of color. And everyone else is white. No, I
- 27:45Speaker 2: hadn't noticed, but you're right.
- 27:47Speaker 1: They're everyone else.
- 27:48Speaker 2: You're right. What I needed from this movie is when
- 27:53Speaker 2: we're finally putting diverse leads front and center, I want
- 27:58Speaker 2: our actors getting that same rich... memorable material that we're
- 28:06Speaker 2: asking for. Now, you said, Alvina, she told you in
- 28:11Speaker 2: that interview that she got to bring in some of
- 28:13Speaker 2: like that dance. That's very like this moment that is
- 28:15Speaker 2: like woven in.
- 28:17Speaker 1: I needed that throughout the entire movie.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Yes.
- 28:20Speaker 1: We need to acknowledge that there's not only a diversity
- 28:24Speaker 1: in actors, but there's a diversity in storytelling.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Yes.
- 28:26Speaker 1: And we're applying the exact same story. And maybe we
- 28:30Speaker 1: need to allow that There's can be more of a
- 28:34Speaker 1: richness in the story we're telling.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Yes, exactly. I agree with you. Moving on. Finally.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Wait, we have a we have a listener. Who writes
- 28:47Speaker 1: the most thoughtful emails. She's like a super hype girl
- 28:50Speaker 1: for us, but... Her last email was Texas Two-Step. Her
- 28:54Speaker 1: last email was Texas Two-Step.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Her name's Kia. Kia, we'd love to hear from you. Yeah, definitely.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Every time she writes in, I'm like, damn.
- 29:02Speaker 1: It, that's so much better than what we said.
- 29:05Speaker 2: I know. Any more wishes? No, I think that's it.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Well, let's talk Did You See That?
- 29:10Speaker 2: Okay. I don't have any.
- 29:13Speaker 2: You know what is so funny is I was listening
- 29:15Speaker 2: to one of our like fall rewind episodes that we
- 29:18Speaker 2: dropped recently and it had like true did you see
- 29:22Speaker 2: that's in it. And for me, like lately, I haven't
- 29:24Speaker 2: been able to spot like true. Did you see that?
- 29:27Speaker 2: They're not always there. They're not always there for me
- 29:30Speaker 2: in this one. I have two mostly questions. Okay. My
- 29:34Speaker 2: first one is the apple cider donuts. Yeah. Aren't they
- 29:39Speaker 2: typically fruity? fried? My stomach is growling.
- 29:43Speaker 1: I've had two different styles of apple cider donuts. One,
- 29:46Speaker 1: like the mini ones that are like fried and like
- 29:48Speaker 1: shaken in a bag.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:49Speaker 1: And then we went to Vermont two years ago and
- 29:52Speaker 1: we had apple cider donuts from an apple farm and
- 29:54Speaker 1: they were baked like this.
- 29:55Speaker 2: And it was actually kind of a dissimilar. Oh.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Because I want, they were good if you like a
- 29:59Speaker 1: baked donut.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Yeah. But I want a fried donut.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Is a baked donut a real thing?
- 30:04Speaker 2: They were like this, like they had been baked. Were
- 30:06Speaker 2: they like a cupcake almost? Because.
- 30:08Speaker 1: It was like a cake donut shake.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Yeah, when they were piping those donuts and I was like, wait,
- 30:13Speaker 2: I thought you, I thought you piped that into the oil.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Into the fryer. Yeah. Yeah. I think perhaps they're made
- 30:20Speaker 2: different ways, but. It did make me want to go
- 30:22Speaker 2: to my local Trader Joe's and grab some apple cider donuts.
- 30:25Speaker 2: They're delicious. They're delicious. Yeah, I might have to do
- 30:27Speaker 2: that on the way home. You want to drive to
- 30:28Speaker 2: Oakland and visit the non-racist apple? Do you want to
- 30:33Speaker 2: do that for your birthday? No, it's a long drive.
- 30:38Speaker 2: You're all, no, I don't want to do that. I'm sorry.
- 30:42Speaker 2: It's a long drive.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I need it to feel like fall.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Okay, I'll just go to the Trader Joe's instead. Get
- 30:49Speaker 2: me a donut over there. I did buy some Pillsbury
- 30:53Speaker 2: pumpkin cinnamon rolls. That sounds delicious.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Who's going to eat that now that there's no child
- 30:58Speaker 1: in your house and your husband doesn't eat carbs?
- 31:01Speaker 2: Me? A whole tube? Maybe. No, not a whole tube.
- 31:06Speaker 2: You know what I've been craving? This is so off topic.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Cookie dough. I've been wanting cookie dough so badly because
- 31:13Speaker 2: I was recently in New York and my daughter and
- 31:14Speaker 2: I went to Mimi's, which is like a frozen yogurt
- 31:17Speaker 2: place that we waited in a 45 minute line to
- 31:20Speaker 2: get into the damn store for hours. self-serve yogurt but
- 31:25Speaker 2: the cookie dough was like it like you scooped oh
- 31:28Speaker 2: yum it wasn't like the little weird balls that you
- 31:31Speaker 2: get here like a golden spoon or whatever it was
- 31:34Speaker 2: like you scooped it out like my whole cup was
- 31:37Speaker 2: like cookie dough and a little bit of yeah it
- 31:41Speaker 2: was delicious.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Worth the 45 minute line.
- 31:44Speaker 2: So funny. Here is my other, did you see that?
- 31:47Speaker 2: And it is another food related moment. Sweet potato fries
- 31:51Speaker 2: with toasted marshmallow and cinnamon sauce. Get in my belly
- 31:55Speaker 2: right now. Sounds incredible. I love that. Sounds incredible.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I'm like, that sounds like a sweet potato casserole, but...
- 32:02Speaker 1: In fry form.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Why? Does this exist here? I don't know.
- 32:07Speaker 1: But I was like, can we make it?
- 32:08Speaker 2: Like, can I buy? I have Crater Joe's sweet potato
- 32:10Speaker 2: fries in my freezer.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Is this something I could like make myself?
- 32:14Speaker 2: Do you have an air fryer? No, but. I was
- 32:16Speaker 2: wondering if that's where you could put like a toasted potato.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Or you could throw some marshmallows on top of that.
- 32:22Speaker 2: And you could definitely make a cinnamon, like, sauce. Because
- 32:25Speaker 2: you make cinnamon... No, you make a brown sugar. Well,
- 32:30Speaker 2: I feel like you could.
- 32:31Speaker 1: If you baked them in the oven, you could maybe
- 32:34Speaker 1: toss marshmallows in for, like, 30 seconds at the end.
- 32:37Speaker 1: And just, like, get them all melty.
- 32:39Speaker 2: And then.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Might have to try that.
- 32:43Speaker 2: I did also... Save a TikTok recipe for toasted marshmallow
- 32:48Speaker 2: coffee syrup. Oh, yum. I was like, that looks amazing.
- 32:52Speaker 2: So we'll see if I follow through. I wondered, is
- 32:55Speaker 2: this like a regional thing?
- 32:58Speaker 1: Or like, I've never heard of this. I haven't either,
- 33:00Speaker 1: but my stomach is growling right now. And I thought
- 33:03Speaker 1: it sounded delicious in the moment.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Messy.
- 33:06Speaker 1: But like maybe you need it with a fork.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Hell yeah. My only other little did you see that
- 33:11Speaker 2: movement moment was in that scene when she like spills
- 33:14Speaker 2: it on James. But it was like a full like
- 33:17Speaker 2: it was angled at him like right into him. I
- 33:21Speaker 2: was like, OK. Anyway. What do you got? This was
- 33:24Speaker 2: homework sponsored by Anthropic because the AI posters were prevalent.
- 33:30Speaker 2: There's a moment where she's like downtown and they all
- 33:33Speaker 2: have their like vote for me for Harvest King. Those
- 33:36Speaker 2: are all the whole board is full of full of
- 33:38Speaker 2: AI posters. I'm 99% sure the like Hayride rules sign.
- 33:44Speaker 2: It had that like very specific AI blocky font on it.
- 33:48Speaker 2: And then there was like another sign, um, And the
- 33:54Speaker 2: throwback photos of them as teenagers. Yeah.
- 33:57Speaker 1: You know, we're getting, finally, we're getting photos that look better,
- 34:01Speaker 1: but you know that they were AI generated.
- 34:02Speaker 2: That's how we're getting them.
- 34:03Speaker 1: They're like, here, send them to prom. Send them to prom.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Have you ever seen the AI generated photos that are
- 34:11Speaker 1: like television couples photos? But so there's one of like
- 34:16Speaker 1: Rory and Logan and it's like, make it look like
- 34:19Speaker 1: a blurry snapshot. And it's like Rory and Logan and
- 34:21Speaker 1: their daughter and just like selfie-ing on the street.
- 34:24Speaker 2: It made me so sad. I haven't seen that, but
- 34:27Speaker 2: I have seen like Rory and Logan and a daughter
- 34:30Speaker 2: in the gazebo and it's terrible.
- 34:32Speaker 1: No, this one looks like a blurry selfie.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Like it was actually, I was like, oh, that makes
- 34:37Speaker 2: me sad. They just look like so happy out and
- 34:40Speaker 2: about with this daughter of theirs. Honestly, the biggest, biggest
- 34:44Speaker 2: heartbreak of my life is that Rory and Logan don't
- 34:47Speaker 2: have to end up together. Oh no. In my mind,
- 34:49Speaker 2: they're together. Oh, okay.
- 34:50Speaker 1: And she's pregnant with his baby.
- 34:52Speaker 2: They're together. Well, I know she's pregnant with his baby. Guys,
- 34:55Speaker 2: this was 10 years ago. I know.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I know she had his baby, but like, did she
- 35:01Speaker 1: just have to, like, is he the Christopher who just,
- 35:04Speaker 1: I mean, I can't, it breaks my heart.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Think of them not together.
- 35:08Speaker 1: He was at Decade Days. Did you see that? Yes,
- 35:10Speaker 1: I did.
- 35:11Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, Logan. You know what I
- 35:14Speaker 2: read in the comments is like, we love Logan, but
- 35:17Speaker 2: we like, what's his name on that? On his... Oh,
- 35:20Speaker 2: The Resident. Yeah.
- 35:22Speaker 1: God, he's so good on The Resident.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Well, we like that him better. His character name. I
- 35:27Speaker 2: can't remember. Conrad? I can't think of it either. I
- 35:29Speaker 2: think it is Conrad. Is that it? I think it
- 35:32Speaker 2: is Conrad. That's a great show. He's a great actor.
- 35:35Speaker 2: I don't know why he's not in some more stuff. Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:38Speaker 2: What's he doing now? I don't want to... I was
- 35:40Speaker 2: going to say, I don't want him on Hallmark.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Maybe I would want him on Hallmark. I mean, I
- 35:44Speaker 1: would love him in a Hallmark. I don't think it's
- 35:45Speaker 1: going to happen.
- 35:46Speaker 2: I don't think so either. I think he.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Cbs series by himself you should watch him on the
