- 0:07Welcome to another edition of this Just in Time podcast.
- 0:10I'm your host, Justin. Today we were going to be
- 0:12talking about we're just going to do a special real quick show.
- 0:16I'm not going to go through each game because frankly, it was a
- 0:20hard week for LSU. But today's Saturday and last
- 0:23night, they had a great game. They came through, it really
- 0:27worked on some stuff. I think they got a good, some
- 0:29good stuff going. It'll be great moving forward.
- 0:34I think what they needed to do was take a rest, reset, have a
- 0:38really good practice, get the bats moving again.
- 0:42We got the bats going again last night and that was perfect.
- 0:44But we're not going to talk about last night.
- 0:46We're going to talk about the Dartmouth Northeastern,
- 0:51Dartmouth Northeastern and ull games.
- 0:54As painful as that's going to be.
- 0:56It was a three and two week. Yeah, we went three and two last
- 1:00week in A5 game stretch in those two losses were just we looked
- 1:05terrible and through even the three wins, pitching was great
- 1:08on the 1st 3, but pitching wasn't so great in the second to
- 1:12the last two. Offense wasn't great throughout
- 1:15the whole thing. So I'm going to jump in to it
- 1:20and I'm not going to spend too much time talking on the games
- 1:22I'm going to go through. I'll go through the stat lines
- 1:27for the first. Here we go.
- 1:30I'll go through the stat lines for the Friday, Saturday.
- 1:35I'll go through the stat lines for the last for the Friday and
- 1:38Saturday game, which we're good. Like I said, we didn't hit that
- 1:43well, but I'll kind of run through them real quick because
- 1:46Evans did great. Evans was great, you know, but
- 1:50offensively we only had five hits, but Cason Evans went five
- 1:57and a third, gave up two hits and two runs, walked three, but
- 2:0210 KS, you know, so he did great.
- 2:07Offense wasn't great. We then we win that game five to
- 2:10two. Then we on Saturday we turn
- 2:13around and beat Northeastern 3 to 1.
- 2:17Cooper Moore went seven and two, seven and 2/3.
- 2:21He had a perfect game going until the 5th when he walked
- 2:24one. He gave up three hits and one
- 2:30iron run with 10K's. Had a perfect game going until
- 2:34the 4th where he walked on and then in the fifth he had a no
- 2:39hitter going on and then he gave up his first hit.
- 2:42Then we go to the Sunday game again, wasn't a huge, wasn't
- 2:47what we were expecting Offensively, we only scored
- 2:51three runs. Offensively, they just needed to
- 2:53reset. But here we go.
- 2:56William Schmidt got the win. We only had four hits in this
- 3:01game. Really.
- 3:02Yeah, we had four hits in this game.
- 3:03William Schmidt went seven and a third gave up four hits and then
- 3:08he struck out nine. He didn't walk anybody, but
- 3:11right before they pulled him, he did have a hit by a pitch.
- 3:15Offensive leaders we let's see, we got again, we got four hits.
- 3:21Our offensive leaders were Brown and Milan.
- 3:24Brown had a home run and then we get to the ugly where, I'm not
- 3:29going to lie, once it turned 10 to nothing and it didn't look
- 3:31like anything was going. I had other things to worry
- 3:34about this week and I turned the game off.
- 3:37But the losing pitcher was Cooper Williams.
- 3:40Looks like we did get something going.
- 3:42We had ten hits, but it was all of our backups to say that got
- 3:47hits. Eddie Yaman, the 4th got two
- 3:50hits, went 2 for three. Patrick went one for one.
- 3:54Harden went one for 2, Klaus went one for one.
- 3:58Yaman, Milam, Rucker, Harden and Klaus were leaders in this game
- 4:03and they came back from what seemed to be an immeasurable
- 4:07odds when they had went down 10 O in first, in the third, in
- 4:13work they way back and only lost 13.
- 4:16Still, we need to be better. We need to be more offensive.
- 4:19And then the ugly. The real nasty, ugly thing
- 4:24happened defensively. We lost to ULL Louisiana, the
- 4:31University of Louisiana, Lafayette.
- 4:35I would never call you Louisiana.
- 4:37You will always be ULL you'll always be, little brother.
- 4:40We've got national championships hanging up.
- 4:42You have championship appearances, but kudos.
- 4:46See all y'all did beat us that night.
- 4:48Whatever, get over it. We lost 7 to 2 with our two runs
- 4:53only coming in the 5th of a two run bomb by Caraway.
- 4:57We had seven hits, but here's the big deal, 3 errors and we
- 5:05left seven on our offensive leaders were Curio was 3 for
- 5:08three, Brown was 2 for four and Caraway was one for four with a
- 5:13home run. Just to make it a Long story
- 5:15short, they had mental breakdown.
- 5:18Pitching wasn't all the way there and Jay Johnson this week.
- 5:23I read an article in the Advocate yesterday.
- 5:26He took responsibility somewhat for this.
- 5:28It's not solely on him because regardless you need to hit.
- 5:31But he said he top loaded the schedule.
- 5:34He learned from this. He won't top load the schedule
- 5:37again. NCAA rules only lets you makes
- 5:40you have to take one day off. So playing A5 game week made
- 5:44them have to take off Tuesday so they couldn't work on the errors
- 5:47and stuff that they mental mistakes that they had on Monday
- 5:50night, which led them into going into Wednesday somewhat not
- 5:54prepared and it hit the fan. I'm not putting any.
- 6:03This isn't going into this week's numbers.
- 6:05I mean it the last week's numbers.
- 6:07This isn't going into the powerhouse poll, which I'll get
- 6:09into, and I'm not going to do a tone setting Tiger of the Week
- 6:13since this is just a special episode, but we had 14.
- 6:18We scored fifteen runs on fourteen hits.
- 6:20We scored four in the first, three in the third, five in the
- 6:22third. I mean four in the first, three
- 6:25in the second, five in the third, three in the fourth, none
- 6:32in the 5th, none in the 5th, but we scored fifteen runs.
- 6:34Cason Evans had a perfect game going into the 6th inning and we
- 6:42had a completely. It was a clean slate, clean
- 6:45defensive game with 0 errors. That means a lot when you look
- 6:50into it. Our offensive leader was of
- 6:52course Jake Brown. He went 4 for five with a home
- 6:55run. Curio was the next one.
- 6:57Three for four got his first home run.
- 7:01Milan got his first home run was 2 for three.
- 7:05York was 2 for four with a double.
- 7:08Dardar was one for three with a double and two RBI, Bron was one
- 7:12for three with one RBI, and Aaron Beatty was a one for three
- 7:16with a home run and one RBI. Jake Brown hit three home runs
- 7:21last night. Left field, center field, dead
- 7:24center and then right center. So he had a great game and then,
- 7:29but like I said, we'll cover that more next week, but I just
- 7:31had to get that bad taste of the UL out my mouth.
- 7:34Moving forward. I think what they need to do is
- 7:36just keep it simple. Last night they had a real
- 7:38simplistic approach. Then they faced a good FCC
- 7:42caliber pitcher last night and everything went good.
- 7:47We'll face and we'll probably face another good on today and
- 7:51then everything will be, you know, we'll get back to where we
- 7:55were, where we were going, and they'll do good things again.
- 7:59I'd rather lose two or three games.
- 8:01We're not supposed to lose at the beginning of the season then
- 8:04get to it be in crunch time at the end of the season and we
- 8:07drop two or three games and there goes our season.
- 8:11These are learning experiences. Not having Stanfield there help
- 8:15hurt us. Hopefully he comes back soon.
- 8:17We need we could use him back. You know, I think they found out
- 8:20we found our second baseman last night with Rucker.
- 8:23I think he'll be good and I think Dardaro end up being in
- 8:27that DH spot because he's you can't lose him offensively, but
- 8:30defensively he's a liability. And I would rather a guy, and
- 8:34I'm not saying that Rucker can't hit the ball because Rucker can
- 8:37hit the ball. He's got a good eye at the plate
- 8:39and he gets stuffed on defensively.
- 8:42But we'll see in the future what happens.
- 8:44We probably won't have a solidified lineup until after
- 8:46next week. Knowing Jay Johnson, you
- 8:50probably won't have a solidified lineup defensively until Tax
- 8:55Day, but here we go. I'm going to go ahead and give
- 9:00Will's breakdown. I'm going to read his notes on
- 9:02why for the powerhouse pole Week 3 pitching.
- 9:07He's got Schmidt at one more at 2, Evans at 3.
- 9:11His rationale was no more, and Evans had more KS than Schmidt.
- 9:15Schmidt didn't allow a walk or earn run and was perfect through
- 9:18his four innings work, giving him the edge over more.
- 9:23In fairness, Evans a couple of errors from the infield put him
- 9:27through a toughest spot going into the past weekend.
- 9:29We agreed that the starters needed to step further, step up
- 9:34further and started delivered offense.
- 9:37Despite struggles. He had Jake Brown, Eddie Yaman
- 9:40and Steven Milam. Despite struggling on Monday
- 9:42against Northeastern, Jake Brown was clearly the best performer
- 9:46on offense this past week. He has a huge second game
- 9:50against Dartmouth as he hit a home run in the bottom of the
- 9:52first along with the clutch RBI double in the 8.
- 9:54Bottom of the eighth. Yaman at 2:00.
- 9:56Because of what he contributed in his outing against
- 9:58Northeastern on Monday, he accounted for two hits, two RB
- 10:02is and two runs. Given his production during the
- 10:05comeback effort, his performance carried weight for me.
- 10:08Not much on rendering redeeming, not much redeeming qualities on
- 10:12offense, but I ended up giving him the spot over mile limit 3
- 10:16as I charted him from multiple hits over the stretch and
- 10:19including his stolen base. Most of the offensive production
- 10:23was misleading due to gifts of errors of LSU was given and
- 10:27posing fielding. Special shout out to Reeves to
- 10:30reserves who showed up against Northeastern's Law in the
- 10:34Northeastern loss. Really gave the team life and
- 10:37almost put pulled off the comeback.
- 10:38I love the decision Jade to shake things up a little bit and
- 10:41most of it worked. Here we go with defense.
- 10:43Steven Milam at one, York at 2, Cooper more at 3.
- 10:47Milam just continues to excel on defense.
- 10:50Made some great plays at second base along with his usual
- 10:53shortstop productivity. York made great plays at first,
- 10:57including getting off the bag to toss to toss the out two more in
- 11:03the top of the sixth in game one against Northeastern.
- 11:06Along was snagging a family out in the top of the fourth in Game
- 11:082 versus Dartmouth. Cooper Morrow was very active
- 11:11fielding in game one versus Northeastern, recording 3 outs
- 11:16to the first. Building definitely was sloppy
- 11:19in general, but these guys were solid during the stretch.
- 11:21OK, here's mine pitching. I've got Schmidt, kind of the
- 11:25same reason as Will Moore, and although Evans did great, I
- 11:28really appreciated Guidry coming in and slamming the door
- 11:31offensively. For me, this was hard.
- 11:33Nobody really did anything too special.
- 11:35I've got Brown in one for obvious reasons, Curiel at 2:00,
- 11:40and then I've got Caraway at 3:00 because he did give us the
- 11:43only two runs against ull Milan would be in there.
- 11:48But that one double he had in game, I think it was Game 2,
- 11:54might have been game three. I don't count that because that
- 11:59hit the center fielder in the glove, and I don't think Dardar.
- 12:03Dardar deserved the hit because that left fielder was nowhere
- 12:06near that ball. And then Caraway, like I said,
- 12:10Curio had some decent hits. He did come around.
- 12:13He was struggling at first, but he got some good hits.
- 12:16OK defense, Cooper Moore at #1 for me, he was flawless on
- 12:23defense. He fielded his position and he
- 12:26just looked really good doing it to his mile.
- 12:28And my own is always probably going to be up on this list for
- 12:30me. The place he makes are really
- 12:34hard, but like I said last week, he makes it look to where anyone
- 12:39can get out on that field and make those plays.
- 12:42And if anyone else got on that field, like one of us got on
- 12:45that field, we would look foolish doing that.
- 12:48We can't do that. He makes it look easy enough to
- 12:51where we could say we have the confidence to say, oh, I could
- 12:54go out there and do what he does.
- 12:56And we don't know when she has that kind of play just off the
- 13:01street. He practices, he puts in the
- 13:03work and he gets it done. Defensive, I mean, I said that
- 13:10and then three, I've got Curio. Curio had some really good
- 13:13plays. He was sick on Friday night,
- 13:15came back Saturday and played really good defense, solid
- 13:18defense. Those are my guys for this week
- 13:22and we'll put the tone setting Tiger back when we thought I was
- 13:25going to film this episode on Wednesday and he said just the
- 13:29bats need to wake up in the offense.
- 13:32His setting, tone setting. Tigers are the offense.
- 13:34They need to bats need to wake up.
- 13:36Mine would be offense and defense for this week, this
- 13:41week, and I know they showed up last night.
- 13:43They showed up and showed out last night.
- 13:45They did really great. They played a clean game of
- 13:46baseball. You know, they look really well
- 13:49put together. They did really good.
- 13:51Come on deep. I mean, offensively we hit 388
- 13:56going into the Dartmouth. The Magnes game, we were 3/8 had
- 14:01a 388 team average, team average from Magnes, Dartmouth, McNeese,
- 14:09Dartmouth, Northeastern in Dartmouth.
- 14:12Again, those four-game stretch was 168 or something like that.
- 14:16I think they needed to wake up and come back in a big way and
- 14:21they did that. I think a lot of their approach,
- 14:24what they did was they needed to keep it simple, go back to the
- 14:28basics, work hard, you know, hard work.
- 14:31When you work hard in these situations, you just keep doing
- 14:33what you were doing. The drops, the bounces, it's all
- 14:38going to come from the hard work.
- 14:41You have to keep putting in the work in.
- 14:44Last night showed it. They put in the hard work, kept
- 14:47it up and they got the bounces. They got the drops, they got the
- 14:51hits, they got the hits in the no man's lands that can really
- 14:55pump an offense up. Defense, they was solid.
- 14:59I think a lot of that has to do with personnel, but they looked
- 15:03really good last night and you can't take that away from them.
- 15:06I'm sure moving forward they'll continue to look great.
- 15:09They're back to a regular schedule now too.
- 15:12They play 3 game series and then they have one midweek game.
- 15:16It's not going to be like anything outlook outrageous or
- 15:19top heavy like the schedule was where we had start the season.
- 15:22We play Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, then Wednesday.
- 15:25That Wednesday they got on the plane, went to Jacksonville
- 15:30after they beat Nichols. They had one day of practice,
- 15:34then they played three, came back, had a game on Tuesday,
- 15:40then rested practice, came back on Friday, played Friday,
- 15:43Saturday, Sunday, Monday and then Wednesday again and didn't
- 15:46have that normalized. Jay Johnson schedule, practice
- 15:49schedule where he went and got everything taken care of and
- 15:55squared away. But he did that and it was
- 15:57great. They showed really good results
- 16:00last night. They look good at the plate,
- 16:03they look good defensively, they look good pitching wise.
- 16:05I think was by the time the season's all said and done,
- 16:09they'll be right where they need to be.
- 16:12They're getting better. It looks like right now they're
- 16:14getting better. They're training up after one
- 16:15game, which is good. We have another game in a couple
- 16:19hours and we'll see how they do. But overall, I think this will
- 16:23be a good weekend and right now this is a great place to sign
- 16:27offs. Have a great day, a great night,
- 16:30whatever you have just made a great one.
