- 1:18Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 1:20Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 1:22Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 1:26Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about
- 1:29Speaker 1: Quentin Tarantino, our brand new episode on Kobe Bryant, the
- 1:33Speaker 1: sources that we used for this episode, which helped us
- 1:35Speaker 1: tell Kobe's story in a unique and really exciting way,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and of course your voicemails, text, dms and more and
- 1:41Speaker 1: has always a whole lot of Rosie. All Right, disc goes,
- 1:44Speaker 1: let's get into it. Pulp Fiction is the best Quentin
- 1:59Speaker 1: Tarantino film. It might be the greatest film of all time.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And I know I'm contradicting myself, but this week, with
- 2:06Speaker 1: the release of our Kobe Bryant episode where we use
- 2:08Speaker 1: Tarantino's Kill Bill as the template to tell Kobe's story,
- 2:12Speaker 1: obviously because Kobe took his alter ego name Black Mamba
- 2:15Speaker 1: from Kill Bill, understandably I have Tarantino on the brain now.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I have made.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Ludicrous, authoritative statements like these before, particularly about films, stating
- 2:25Speaker 1: unequivocally that The Godfather was the greatest film of all time.
- 2:28Speaker 1: But I think I am ready to amend that and
- 2:30Speaker 1: to piss off a lot of film purists in the process.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I've also said, by the way that The Godfather might
- 2:35Speaker 1: just be the first great film ever. That really upset people.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I think it's true, and if it's not, what I
- 2:42Speaker 1: definitely know to be true is that it is at
- 2:44Speaker 1: least certainly the first great modern film. But this is
- 2:48Speaker 1: a digression, Okay, back to Tarantino in pulp fiction. When
- 2:51Speaker 1: pulp fiction came out, you know this if you were around,
- 2:54Speaker 1: it was a revelation. It broke the mold. It completely
- 2:57Speaker 1: captured pop culture at the moment. It inspired an entire
- 3:00Speaker 1: movement of indie filmmakers. It also inspired a bunch of
- 3:03Speaker 1: bad copycats. It changed not only how we view movies,
- 3:06Speaker 1: but how we talk about movies and what we expect
- 3:08Speaker 1: from movies, to say nothing of how unique every aspect
- 3:12Speaker 1: of that movie was, while it was clearly paying homage
- 3:15Speaker 1: to films that Quentin loved from the past, all this
- 3:18Speaker 1: and it is wildly entertaining. This is why it's Quentin
- 3:24Speaker 1: Tarantino's greatest film, and also why it may be the
- 3:28Speaker 1: greatest film of all time. And I'm being serious. I'm
- 3:30Speaker 1: being dead serious. I'm not just saying this to have
- 3:32Speaker 1: a hot take on Kobe Bryant week. Of course, the
- 3:35Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant kill Bill thing that we did got me
- 3:37Speaker 1: thinking about this. But if I'm assessing all the movies
- 3:41Speaker 1: I've seen in my life, and I don't pretend to
- 3:43Speaker 1: be a cinephile or understand film like some of my
- 3:46Speaker 1: friends do or just you know, other people out there
- 3:49Speaker 1: in the world. But you know, I have pretty okay
- 3:52Speaker 1: taste and I watch a lot of fucking movies. So
- 3:54Speaker 1: just as a consumer, you know, I'm sitting here going
- 3:57Speaker 1: what's the greatest film of all time? And I'm not
- 4:00Speaker 1: trying to be pretentious about it. And when I think
- 4:02Speaker 1: about what pulp fiction meant at the moment, what it
- 4:06Speaker 1: means now, it's hard to think of another movie.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Like I said, maybe The Godfather.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Now that said, it might be the greatest movie of
- 4:13Speaker 1: all time, It might be the greatest Quintin Tarantino movie
- 4:15Speaker 1: of all time.
- 4:16Speaker 2: But is it my favorite Quentin Tarantino movie of all time?
- 4:20Speaker 2: That's a different question. I don't really know.
- 4:23Speaker 1: It had this amazing impact when it was released and
- 4:25Speaker 1: it still has to this day, so it's hard to
- 4:28Speaker 1: argue with it really truly is. But let's argue shall
- 4:31Speaker 1: we let's rank these Tarantino films, or at least let's
- 4:34Speaker 1: rank the top five Tarantino films, and in honor of Kobe,
- 4:38Speaker 1: we will later rank the top five NBA players of
- 4:41Speaker 1: all time as well. So number one pulp fiction, number two,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I go Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino's most
- 4:48Speaker 1: recent masterpiece, where he's got all of his powers. They're
- 4:52Speaker 1: at their height, They're on full display. Plus no filmmaker
- 4:56Speaker 1: has ever been I don't think better suited for the world,
- 4:59Speaker 1: to time and place to set a story. And then
- 5:01Speaker 1: Quentin Tarantino in late nineteen sixties Hollywood.
- 5:03Speaker 2: The movie is perfect.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I mean, maybe Scorsese with Taxi Driver in the seventies,
- 5:09Speaker 1: or perhaps Goodfellas in the seventies and eighties. Actually yeah,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I can definitely make the good Fellow's argument. But still Tarantino.
- 5:17Speaker 1: This is a love letter to where he came from,
- 5:21Speaker 1: which is Hollywood, and it is gorgeous and just like
- 5:24Speaker 1: pulp fiction, wildly entertaining.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Number three.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Okay, so number one pulp fiction, number two, Once Upon
- 5:29Speaker 1: a Time in Hollywood Number three, super unpopular choice here
- 5:32Speaker 1: from me, But I go Jackie Brown, I love it.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I'm in the minority. I understand, I understand. It's not
- 5:40Speaker 1: a big swing from Tarantino. He wasn't swinging for the
- 5:43Speaker 1: fences with this one. It's a little genre film, but
- 5:46Speaker 1: it's a solid double, and it's a double that cleared
- 5:48Speaker 1: the bases. And Michael Keaton, Michael Keaton, Michael Keaton, Michael Keaton,
- 5:52Speaker 1: Michael Keaton's charisma and attitude with Tarantino's words in his mouth,
- 5:56Speaker 1: it is something that I can never get sick of. Also,
- 5:58Speaker 1: for God's sake, Pam Greer, come on, what are we
- 6:00Speaker 1: talking about? Number three? Obviously Jackie Brown, obviously number four
- 6:06Speaker 1: inglorious Bastards. I'm still trying to figure out why I
- 6:10Speaker 1: love this movie so much. I didn't love it when
- 6:12Speaker 1: it came out. I mean I liked it, sure, I
- 6:14Speaker 1: liked it a lot, But I didn't leave the theater
- 6:17Speaker 1: feeling like I did after I left the theater watching
- 6:20Speaker 1: Paul Fiction, or after I left the theater watching Once
- 6:22Speaker 1: upon a Time in Hollywood, or even watching Jackie Brown.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I didn't walk out going, oh my god, that was incredible.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I left a little confused, not confused, walloped, I think
- 6:33Speaker 1: is the better way to put it. And it took
- 6:35Speaker 1: me a while to catch up to this movie. And
- 6:38Speaker 1: it's only been in the last couple of years that
- 6:41Speaker 1: I've really been sucked into this film, and I've really
- 6:44Speaker 1: started to truly love it.
- 6:46Speaker 2: And it's still growing on me.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And you know, you might ask me, or I might
- 6:51Speaker 1: just no one's asking me. But I might just do
- 6:53Speaker 1: this list again in another year, and this might be
- 6:57Speaker 1: higher for me on the top five list. It's some
- 7:00Speaker 1: of Quentin Tarantino's best storytelling in Inglorious Bastards. It's almost
- 7:05Speaker 1: like his best Micross storytelling. He does all these vignettes.
- 7:08Speaker 1: He's famous for it, right, and he's he busts the
- 7:11Speaker 1: three act mold with his movies. But this one in particular,
- 7:15Speaker 1: these small scenes spread out over this huge canvas that
- 7:19Speaker 1: is World War Two. He just fucking nails it and
- 7:23Speaker 1: makes me keep coming back to this movie. Teddy Ballgame,
- 7:26Speaker 1: Strudel Scalps, Michael Fassbender's finest moment on film, I think,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and just an all timer of an ending. I love
- 7:34Speaker 1: this movie, and I have a feeling I'm gonna grow
- 7:36Speaker 1: to love it even more as I get older and
- 7:38Speaker 1: as the film gets older. Okay, so let's recap again
- 7:40Speaker 1: number one, Pulp Fiction number two, Once Upon a Time
- 7:43Speaker 1: in Hollywood number three, Jackie Brown, number four, Inglorious Bastards
- 7:47Speaker 1: number five. You're sitting there saying, when gonna When's he
- 7:50Speaker 1: gonna mention kill Bill? He's only a one spot left, man,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and he hasn't yet mentioned kill Bill? And what about Jango,
- 7:55Speaker 1: Quentin's second Oscar win for his Best screenplay, What about Jango?
- 7:58Speaker 1: There's only one slot left? How can he leave off
- 8:00Speaker 1: Django or kill Bill?
- 8:02Speaker 2: Well, I just can't.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And I'm not only gonna leave one off, I'm gonna
- 8:06Speaker 1: leave both off. Because Reservoir Dogs come on the height
- 8:11Speaker 1: of nineties indie filmmaking and the announcement of the visionary
- 8:15Speaker 1: excellence that Quentin Tarantino has.
- 8:18Speaker 2: It propelled him, It propelled his world. It blew us
- 8:21Speaker 2: all away.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Amazing movie, incredible movie, even if you weren't there. This
- 8:28Speaker 1: is a genre busting I'm struggling to find words to
- 8:33Speaker 1: describe how great this film is.
- 8:35Speaker 2: In five.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Five feels low. Five feels very, very very low for
- 8:41Speaker 1: Reservoir Dogs. But yeah, I'm looking at this list now
- 8:45Speaker 1: and I'm going Jackie Brown at three and Reservoir Dogs
- 8:47Speaker 1: at five. I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I'm altering this in real time.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Reservoir Dogs is three, Jackie Brown is five, So number
- 8:56Speaker 1: one to recap pulp Fiction, number two, Once upon a
- 8:59Speaker 1: Time in Hollywood, number three, Reservoir Dogs, number four, Inglorious Bastards,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and number five Jackie Brown. Hard not to put death
- 9:09Speaker 1: Proof on this list from my standpoint, And I know
- 9:10Speaker 1: you're sitting there shaking your head, You're going fucking death Proof,
- 9:13Speaker 1: But I rank I think I ranked death Proof even
- 9:17Speaker 1: higher than Django, definitely higher than Kill Bill. Kill Bill
- 9:22Speaker 1: might be despite our efforts again, despite our efforts over
- 9:24Speaker 1: the last few weeks, with this Kobe Bryant episode, in
- 9:28Speaker 1: this homage which I'm going to talk about later, to
- 9:30Speaker 1: Kill Bill and to Tarantino.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Kill Bill I think might be my least favorite.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Tarantino film, which isn't to say that I don't like it.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I just don't love it. And I love I love
- 9:43Speaker 2: his movies.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I even like I think I like True Romance. I
- 9:47Speaker 1: know I like True Romance better than Kill Bill. I
- 9:49Speaker 1: do for sure. So Okay, so there's the list. There's
- 9:52Speaker 1: the top five, there's the top five. I hope you're
- 9:54Speaker 1: putting together your top five right now, and I hope
- 9:56Speaker 1: I pissed you off with these. I didn't mean to
- 9:58Speaker 1: piss you off, but these kind of arguments are my
- 10:02Speaker 1: fucking life's blood.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Man.
- 10:03Speaker 2: This is this is what I miss about being young.
- 10:06Speaker 1: It just seemed like I was in one of these
- 10:07Speaker 1: arguments every night with my friends, and it just doesn't
- 10:10Speaker 1: happen anymore. I don't want to argue with people online,
- 10:12Speaker 1: but I don't want to talk about this with you.
- 10:13Speaker 1: So let me know who your top five Tarantino films
- 10:15Speaker 1: are and what is the number one spot? And if
- 10:17Speaker 1: it's not pulp fiction, you better damn we'll have a
- 10:18Speaker 1: good reason for whoever is number one, because pulp fiction
- 10:22Speaker 1: is tough to fuck with. Okay, let's move on in
- 10:25Speaker 1: honor of Kobe, right, that's what we're talking about. Are
- 10:26Speaker 1: supposed to be anyhow? Top five NBA players. Okay, here's
- 10:30Speaker 1: my list in reverse order this time. Number five, Larry Bird,
- 10:35Speaker 1: number four, Bill Russell, number three, Magic Johnson, number two,
- 10:39Speaker 1: Kareem abdul Jabbar, and number one. There is no fucking
- 10:43Speaker 1: argument it is Michael Jordan. Just stop with anything else
- 10:47Speaker 1: in the number one spot. You cannot make an argument
- 10:50Speaker 1: for anyone.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Else besides Michael Jordan. So there it is.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant, just like kill Bill, does not make the
- 10:55Speaker 1: top five. Okay, honestly, would you just honestly ask yourself,
- 11:00Speaker 1: would you take Kobe Bryant in one game over any
- 11:03Speaker 1: of these players? Jordan, Kareem, Magic, Bill, Russell, Larry Bird. Okay,
- 11:07Speaker 1: maybe maybe I can understand an argument you would make,
- 11:13Speaker 1: But I tell you what I can understand is Lebron
- 11:16Speaker 1: over any of those top five.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Just I know you're freaking out.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I know some of you your hair is on fire
- 11:21Speaker 1: right now, but I cannot do it and listen. I
- 11:25Speaker 1: want you to know if you if you got the
- 11:29Speaker 1: very subtle, actually it wasn't that subtle, if you got
- 11:32Speaker 1: the Lebron dig that we made in the Kobe episode.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I want you to write to me, however you want
- 11:38Speaker 1: to do it on tech six one seven nine oh
- 11:40Speaker 1: six six six three eight, on Instagram at Disgrace lamp pod.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You want to leave me a voicemail, let me know
- 11:45Speaker 1: that you got it, let me know if you agree
- 11:46Speaker 1: with it or not. Okay, because I think it is
- 11:49Speaker 1: a really significant critique of Lebron James, and it's what
- 11:53Speaker 1: separates him and knocks him lower on the list than
- 11:56Speaker 1: these other players from a previous generation.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Six one seven.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Nine six, six six three eight. Hit me on voicemail,
- 12:02Speaker 1: hit me on text. Your top five Tarantino films. That's
- 12:05Speaker 1: directed films. Okay, so true romance doesn't count. Natural born
- 12:09Speaker 1: killers wouldn't count anyways. But I'm just saying, is Kill
- 12:13Speaker 1: Bill on your top five? And what are your top
- 12:15Speaker 1: five NBA players? And does Kobe make the cut? And
- 12:17Speaker 1: did you find the lebron dig in the last Kobe episode?
- 12:20Speaker 2: We did hit me up six.
- 12:21Speaker 1: One seven nine oh six six six three eight to
- 12:23Speaker 1: let me know I'll be back in a flash. All right,
- 12:47Speaker 1: So there are two separate research tracks that we followed
- 12:49Speaker 1: for this episode in order to combine the real life
- 12:52Speaker 1: of Kobe Bryant with the fictional universe of quittin Tarantino's
- 12:55Speaker 1: Kill Bill. Okay, So for us, there's basically two ways
- 12:59Speaker 1: we could have done this the obvious way to tell
- 13:01Speaker 1: Kobe's story, and I understand, I know some people are
- 13:04Speaker 1: upset that we didn't do it that way, that we
- 13:05Speaker 1: didn't particularly that we didn't lean into the sexual assl
- 13:09Speaker 1: allegations with more intensity and with a with a with
- 13:13Speaker 1: a bigger spotlight. But you know, and I totally get that,
- 13:17Speaker 1: I understand it. I completely understand it, actually, but you know,
- 13:21Speaker 1: we just saw an opportunity here to do something different
- 13:23Speaker 1: and to take a wild creative swing. So that's what
- 13:26Speaker 1: we did. And you know, you get you get enough
- 13:29Speaker 1: of that sort of like straight you know, this famous person,
- 13:32Speaker 1: this celebrity, this artist, this musician did this horrific thing,
- 13:36Speaker 1: and we're gonna tell you why that happened. This was
- 13:40Speaker 1: something totally different, and honestly, as creative people, we have
- 13:43Speaker 1: to do this every once in a while. We got
- 13:45Speaker 1: to step out of our lane and try new things
- 13:47Speaker 1: and take risks just to keep it fresh for us.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So there was the obvious way to tell Kobe's story,
- 13:52Speaker 1: which of course we didn't do. And then there was
- 13:55Speaker 1: another way, the so called Black Mamba way, the alter
- 13:58Speaker 1: ego Black Mamba the co created in order to continue
- 14:02Speaker 1: to dominate in the game while facing the challenges of
- 14:05Speaker 1: his professional and personal career. This thing that he developed
- 14:10Speaker 1: called the Black Mamba mentality. This is something that Kobe
- 14:14Speaker 1: lifted directly from Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill movies Volumes one
- 14:17Speaker 1: and Volumes two, of course, and we have these editorial
- 14:20Speaker 1: meetings here when we're getting into a subject where when
- 14:22Speaker 1: we're starting the research, where I discuss with the writers
- 14:27Speaker 1: what our editorial point of view is going to be,
- 14:30Speaker 1: things that I want to address, things that I want
- 14:32Speaker 1: to avoid. This stems from my view into the subject,
- 14:36Speaker 1: my personal feelings on the subject. And with Kobe, it's
- 14:40Speaker 1: a complicated issue because I fucking hated Kobe Bryant when
- 14:44Speaker 1: he was playing, and you know, I just did not
- 14:48Speaker 1: like the guy professionally, of course as a Celtics fan,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and I certainly didn't like him personally. And then I
- 14:55Speaker 1: saw that Showtime documentary shortly after he passed away, and
- 15:01Speaker 1: I was sucked in and I started to hear his
- 15:05Speaker 1: point of view on being competitive and this whole black
- 15:08Speaker 1: Mamba mentality and completely changed how I thought about the
- 15:11Speaker 1: guy completely. And then, of course, when we get into
- 15:14Speaker 1: this editorial meeting that I was just telling you about,
- 15:17Speaker 1: you know, the kill Bill connection, we were just like,
- 15:19Speaker 1: all right, we got it. This is how we're going
- 15:21Speaker 1: to tell this story. And then we tried tapping directly
- 15:26Speaker 1: into that kill Bill mindset and in a fun way,
- 15:29Speaker 1: it was a challenge for us.
- 15:31Speaker 2: We structured.
- 15:32Speaker 1: We tried to structure the episode in the same way
- 15:35Speaker 1: that the Kill Bill movies are structured. At Kobe as
- 15:38Speaker 1: an assassin, he has to beat his rivals and former teammates,
- 15:41Speaker 1: just as Uma Thurman had to do and kill Bill
- 15:43Speaker 1: in order to realize her goal. So for the Kobe
- 15:46Speaker 1: side and the research, we used the book called The
- 15:47Speaker 1: Rise Kobe Bryant in the Pursuit of Immortality by Mike Sieski.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Also a great book if you're interested, written by Kobe
- 15:53Speaker 1: himself called The Mamba Mentality How I Play, which was
- 15:56Speaker 1: published two years before Kobe's death, really gives an inside
- 15:59Speaker 1: look into Kobe's strategy and how he did what he did.
- 16:02Speaker 1: In addition to books, there's some great documentaries that I
- 16:04Speaker 1: alluded to before. Spike Lee of course made one called
- 16:06Speaker 1: Kobe Doing Work, great title produced by ESPN. You can
- 16:10Speaker 1: easily find that fascinating documentary focuses on one game that
- 16:14Speaker 1: Kobe played before, the during, and the after. There's another
- 16:17Speaker 1: doc this is the one I mentioned before from Showtime
- 16:19Speaker 1: called Kobe Bryant's Muse.
- 16:21Speaker 2: That one gives a.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Bigger picture in terms of Kobe's life and career rather
- 16:25Speaker 1: than focusing on just one moment like Spike's movie did.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So it's you know, you get two different things with
- 16:29Speaker 1: these docs, and then if you want something awesome, hunt
- 16:32Speaker 1: down this clip of Kobe being interviewed on ESPN in
- 16:35Speaker 1: twenty sixteen, an interview in which he talks about his
- 16:38Speaker 1: sixty point performance in his final Lakers game and how
- 16:42Speaker 1: he compared that directly to Kill Bill. I wonder if
- 16:46Speaker 1: Tarantino's ever talked about this, because because Kobe was wired
- 16:50Speaker 1: into Tarantino in a way that you know, was kind
- 16:53Speaker 1: of news to all of us.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Okay, it makes so.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Much sense though, it really does, which of course leads
- 17:00Speaker 1: me to our other research track, which was watching the
- 17:02Speaker 1: Quentin Tarantino movies, the Kill Bill movies again. And you know,
- 17:05Speaker 1: I've talked about this before. I talked about it early
- 17:07Speaker 1: earlier in the previous block. Kill Bill not one of
- 17:10Speaker 1: my favorite Tarantino movies, but still, I mean, I have
- 17:12Speaker 1: a lot of love for it, and it was amazing.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Patrick Coleman, who wrote this particular episode, did a fucking
- 17:19Speaker 1: awesome job.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Man.
- 17:20Speaker 2: He killed it.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Took the template from the movies and applied our Kobe
- 17:25Speaker 1: story to that template. The fight with Phil Jackson aka
- 17:28Speaker 1: the zen Master. We based that on the Bride's fight
- 17:30Speaker 1: and kill Bill with Vernita Green. There's Shack aka the
- 17:35Speaker 1: Big Bearishna Cough burying Kobe alive in a box, and
- 17:37Speaker 1: of course that comes from the scene in volume two
- 17:40Speaker 1: where Bud buries the Bride alive. In the scene where
- 17:42Speaker 1: Kobe trains with his cousin Sharif's a direct homage to
- 17:45Speaker 1: the scene where the Bride is training with Pie May.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Just Patrick did an incredible job here. There's also all
- 17:52Speaker 1: these other kill Bill references in Easter Eggs in this episode.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Let us know if you can find them. Six one
- 17:59Speaker 1: seven nine, six six three eight. That's how you call me,
- 18:02Speaker 1: leave me a voicemail, That's how you send me a text,
- 18:05Speaker 1: just like these folks here who cannot put down this
- 18:08Speaker 1: argument of the greatest guitarists ever. And I'm gonna play
- 18:11Speaker 1: it out a little bit here we go.
- 18:13Speaker 4: So recently I heard you ask me about our opinions
- 18:16Speaker 4: about great guitarists. I think it was an episode where
- 18:19Speaker 4: you were talking about Eddie Eddie van Halen or Eddie
- 18:22Speaker 4: fucking Eddie van fucking Halen. Daryl fucking Abbot. What else
- 18:28Speaker 4: can I say?
- 18:29Speaker 1: This one from the eight one to fourth thank you, Yes,
- 18:31Speaker 1: Daryl Abbitt, Dimebag Daryl, great guitar player, better than Eddie
- 18:35Speaker 1: van Halen.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I'm not sure you're saying that.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And yeah, you're you're referencing the Eddie van Halen episode
- 18:40Speaker 1: that we just did, and obviously check that out if
- 18:44Speaker 1: you haven't already, But just so you know, there is
- 18:46Speaker 1: a Dimebag Daryl Pantera episode and there's a lot of
- 18:49Speaker 1: van Halen in that as well. Seven to four with
- 18:52Speaker 1: this voicemail.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Hey Man regarding the best cover that made it better
- 18:57Speaker 3: than the original. Probably not the best, but one that.
- 19:02Speaker 4: You probably should listen to if you haven't is Doctor
- 19:05Speaker 4: Dog's part of Races.
- 19:06Speaker 3: I think Hustleinking Architecture and Husselinky at something like that
- 19:10Speaker 3: wrote the original kind of weird to cool, but their
- 19:13Speaker 3: version is awesome. So and Hendricks love the way for
- 19:15Speaker 3: best guitar I mean, Eddie van Halen awesome, but I
- 19:18Speaker 3: think pioneering the electric guitar in the Hendrick scores and
- 19:23Speaker 3: all of you did first, I think gets in the
- 19:26Speaker 3: edge ofb But thanks.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Face Doctor Dog.
- 19:29Speaker 1: I will check that out. That's one of those bands,
- 19:31Speaker 1: you know. I've seen them live long long time ago.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I loved them, and it was just one of those
- 19:36Speaker 1: things I never really got into it. I should have,
- 19:40Speaker 1: I remember very I have very fond memories about that.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Show is at the Middle East and Cambridge, I believe. Anyways,
- 19:45Speaker 1: I will check that out. Thank you for the voicemail
- 19:47Speaker 1: appreciated six one seven nine six six six three eight
- 19:50Speaker 1: guys voicemail text and I specifically want to hear about
- 19:56Speaker 1: your favorite your top five, your top five, top five? Okay,
- 20:02Speaker 1: Tarantino Films eight to eight, writes in Happy Sunday, Jake
- 20:05Speaker 1: just finished the Lane Daily episode. I know the story
- 20:07Speaker 1: in and out, but hearing your take really makes a
- 20:09Speaker 1: person feel like they have a steak in the story.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Bravo once again. My part here is sixteen year old
- 20:16Speaker 1: me in the Clash of the Titans show when they
- 20:19Speaker 1: took a crowd pick after Alison Chans finished their set.
- 20:22Speaker 1: So fucking cool seeing myself there. This show in Lakeland,
- 20:25Speaker 1: Florida was recorded for Slayers Decade of Aggression double album.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I can say I'm lucky enough to have seen Alison
- 20:32Speaker 1: Chains in ninety one and again in twenty ten piece
- 20:35Speaker 1: Lee Lee right on, and there's a picture from it
- 20:38Speaker 1: looks like the inside of the CD cover from that
- 20:42Speaker 1: Slayer record right on. Very cool from three eighty six,
- 20:47Speaker 1: on the subject of great cover songs, Jimmy Hendrick's version
- 20:50Speaker 1: of Bob Dylan Along the watch Tower makes you forget
- 20:52Speaker 1: who wrote it so much so that Dylan plays Jimmy's
- 20:55Speaker 1: version live. And then there's a text right after that
- 20:56Speaker 1: that says, just heard you say exactly that did say that?
- 21:01Speaker 1: And yeah, wonderful, wonderful cover, one of the best ever.
- 21:05Speaker 1: All Right, we are going to take a quick break
- 21:09Speaker 1: and we'll be right back. All right, we are back,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and I want to talk to you about a bunch
- 21:27Speaker 1: of really cool things that we discovered while researching this
- 21:29Speaker 1: new episode on Kobe Bryant, which did not wind up
- 21:31Speaker 1: in the actual episode for different reasons, primarily this wild
- 21:35Speaker 1: story about the hip hop album that Kobe recorded back
- 21:37Speaker 1: in two thousands.
- 21:38Speaker 2: But never released.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Yes, Shaq was not the only Laker pursuing a side
- 21:42Speaker 1: hustle in music, but.
- 21:44Speaker 2: There's one caveat. Of course.
