- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Gino Oriama on the Women's Basketball Coaches show
- 0:02Speaker 1: him your host Bob Joyce. Women will take on USC Saturday.
- 0:06Speaker 1: We'll be at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. Pregame
- 0:09Speaker 1: at five with Dead Fisk and myself. That's five Eastern,
- 0:11Speaker 1: tip off shortly after five thirty on the Yukon Sports Network,
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Varsity Network app, and the Varsitynetwork dot Com. Gino
- 0:18Speaker 1: Sarah Williams seventeen minutes was four for five, eight points,
- 0:22Speaker 1: four boards, three assists in the game. Where's her confidence
- 0:27Speaker 1: level at right now? Because I know at the beginning
- 0:29Speaker 1: of the year it seemed like she was very rushed
- 0:32Speaker 1: and you know, still trying to figure things out as
- 0:35Speaker 1: a husky. Where have you seen her progress?
- 0:41Speaker 2: It kind of a you know, it flows even within
- 0:50Speaker 2: the even within the same quarter. I think you'll see
- 0:54Speaker 2: first where she's able to get the ball, where she
- 0:58Speaker 2: wants to get a bucket, where ever she wants it, uh,
- 1:03Speaker 2: you know, and defensively, she'll you know, she'll be in
- 1:06Speaker 2: the right place at the right time. And uh, I
- 1:12Speaker 2: think our big thing with with Sarah is her ability
- 1:16Speaker 2: two Uh, stay in the moment, stay consistent, don't dribble
- 1:27Speaker 2: yourself out of a really good possession. Don't rush yourself
- 1:31Speaker 2: out of something, am h. Don't commit silly foules so
- 1:39Speaker 2: you can stay in the game. I think little by little,
- 1:42Speaker 2: you know, she's chipping away at all the things that
- 1:47Speaker 2: I believe she has the ability to chip away at
- 1:51Speaker 2: and and become more reliable score inside, become more reliable
- 1:57Speaker 2: rebounder and defense to pressure or presence. I should say so,
- 2:04Speaker 2: I see it, but it's not on an ongoing basis yet.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, having played one system for three years
- 2:12Speaker 1: and the responsibilities that she had on her shoulders from
- 2:15Speaker 1: a scoring and rebounding standpoint, then to come here where
- 2:19Speaker 1: you're playing with a lot of really good players on
- 2:22Speaker 1: your team. I mean imagine it's got to be a
- 2:24Speaker 1: big adjustment for her just to adjust to what the
- 2:27Speaker 1: I mean, the expectations are high, but at least the
- 2:30Speaker 1: style and what you have around you. It's got to
- 2:34Speaker 1: be a big adjustment for her.
- 2:37Speaker 2: It is, I think it is. I think it's a
- 2:39Speaker 2: big adjustment for anyone who comes into this program after
- 2:43Speaker 2: they've been used to a different style of play at
- 2:47Speaker 2: the pace of the game. And yeah, the expectation level,
- 2:54Speaker 2: the amount of scrutiny on the game. All those things
- 2:58Speaker 2: take takes. I'm getting used to. But she's a talented
- 3:03Speaker 2: kid who has a lot of skills to work with.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And uh, she's a she's a thinker, unfortunately, and she
- 3:13Speaker 2: has a tendency to overthink things. You know. I like
- 3:18Speaker 2: kids who are really smart in school and don't think
- 3:21Speaker 2: much on the basketball court. I like those guys. Is
- 3:24Speaker 2: that a little bit much of a thinker?
- 3:28Speaker 1: Is that more of an issue you have to deal
- 3:30Speaker 1: with this stay and age with the players that you
- 3:33Speaker 1: have as opposed to previous years or or even like say,
- 3:36Speaker 1: ten years ago. Is it different now?
- 3:39Speaker 2: I don't I don't know. I think we always have.
- 3:42Speaker 2: You always have your share of players who just play
- 3:46Speaker 2: and players who have to think things through all the time.
- 3:51Speaker 2: And we've had some great players who were thinkers. And
- 3:55Speaker 2: we asked a lot of really good players who just play,
- 3:58Speaker 2: you know, who don't get you know, who don't get
- 4:02Speaker 2: into too much of it, but you know, should I
- 4:06Speaker 2: do this or that or this? Well? What if this?
- 4:09Speaker 2: What if that? Just let it be comm instinctive, you know.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And and I think we had a long talk the
- 4:18Speaker 2: other day, and she understands it. I think she she
- 4:23Speaker 2: understands it, and I would expect that with each practice,
- 4:26Speaker 2: in each game that we play, it'll get it'll get
- 4:31Speaker 2: better and better.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, one thing that you know, in the years
- 4:35Speaker 1: that I've done this with you, one of the phrases
- 4:38Speaker 1: I always hear is figure it out because there are
- 4:41Speaker 1: so many options, Like particularly in the offensive vent, it's
- 4:44Speaker 1: not just run a particular play and has to run
- 4:46Speaker 1: this way. You could do X Y and z off
- 4:49Speaker 1: certain movements. And that's obviously something that takes time to
- 4:52Speaker 1: figure out, not just here at Ukon, but I'm sure
- 4:55Speaker 1: it's other places. But that's part of the challenge though,
- 4:58Speaker 1: because you really it's that f in line between thinking
- 5:01Speaker 1: about it and not thinking about it. Once you get comfortable.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It is, it is, and and the freedom that we
- 5:10Speaker 2: give and we give our players, uh that comes that
- 5:18Speaker 2: comes out of that comes out a price that comes
- 5:20Speaker 2: out of costs, you know. So Uh, sometimes it's easier
- 5:25Speaker 2: to play when everything is really structured for you, and
- 5:30Speaker 2: you know, you go from a to be to seed
- 5:32Speaker 2: to be and that's that. And I've never aspired to
- 5:36Speaker 2: that because I think the it limits your ability to
- 5:44Speaker 2: grow as a player. Now you just become really good
- 5:48Speaker 2: at running a play. So giving you a lot of
- 5:53Speaker 2: you know, a lot of options, are a lot of
- 5:55Speaker 2: freedom to just play within you know, the concept of
- 6:00Speaker 2: our offense. It takes, uh, it takes some time because
- 6:06Speaker 2: sometimes you know, young, your first here with us. No,
- 6:10Speaker 2: I have three options on this. Yeah, well, while I'm
- 6:13Speaker 2: thinking about the first first one, second one, and third one,
- 6:16Speaker 2: all three are going. Now you waste the five seconds
- 6:19Speaker 2: thinking about it.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like a freshman quarterback looking at his past patterns, right.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Exactly, that's right. Yeah, that's right.
- 6:26Speaker 1: That's pretty absolutely yea more Gino. The U kind of
- 6:29Speaker 1: women's basketball coaches showing on Wednesday night continues in a
- 6:32Speaker 1: minute here on Learfield
