Apple Computers is 50 years old. Hurrah.
• 0:09
Welcome to Mark and Pete. And here we have a story of
• 0:13
investment gone wrong. Well, this is Mark and Pete 2
• 0:17
blokes with half an opinion. Now here's our first thought.
• 0:21
From the tree of technology growth, an apple at its very
• 0:25
core is something folk do adore. They say an apple every day
• 0:30
keeps all the data hard at play. An apple that gets a lot of use
• 0:34
may eventually run out of juice. An apple consumes lots of bites
• 0:39
from a bunch of app delights, and the lovely apple of your eye
• 0:43
  sees sales soaring extremely high.
• 0:47
Well, that may be the case. Yes, the Apple is 50 years of
• 0:51
age. Well, right back back at the
• 0:53
beginning. Yes, of course, Steve Wozniak
• 0:56
and yes, Steve Jobs. Yes, you remember this is the
• 1:00
revolution technology that certainly for most people have
• 1:04
got them all in their pockets or at home or possibly even at
• 1:08
work. Now Mr. Pete, when we look at to
• 1:12
what Steve Jobs and colleagues did, there was one particular
• 1:16
error that was made by an investor.
• 1:18
Many people might not be familiar with Ron Wayne.
• 1:22
Now, why is this so significant when we celebrate 50 years of
• 1:26
Apple? Well, poor old Ron Wayne, not to
• 1:31
be confused with John Wayne, completely different individual,
• 1:35
but strangely almost as involved with the development of Apple.
• 1:40
Because yes, poor old Ron Wayne was one of the one of the
• 1:44
founders of Apple, was he not? Oh yes, but only for only around
• 1:48
for 12 days. It may have been a mistake to
• 1:52
pull out. It may, I mean may have been a
• 1:55
  mistake. Suppose so.
• 1:58
  Perhaps an understatement. If.
• 2:00
What you're talking about is return on investment because he
• 2:05
became a little bit scared, nervous, uttery, one might say,
• 2:08
and that led to it might. What do you think?
• 2:12
It's possibly the biggest miscalculation in investments in
• 2:16
history. I don't know if we go that far,
• 2:18
but. I think we should explain, yes,
• 2:22
well Ron Wayne was one of the advisers to the Wozniak and Jobs
• 2:28
and it was definitely something as a a possible opportunity of a
• 2:33
$2300 investment at the time. Now as you say, he got a little
• 2:39
bit jittery because he felt that potentially there were some
• 2:41
liabilities that could actually impact him.
• 2:45
Now when we move time on, of course, as we all know that
• 2:48
Apple definitely succeeded. Well today, had Ron Wayne still
• 2:54
retained his stake, it would now be worth $370 billion.
• 3:01
Now that's quite a lot of money for anyone, for that matter.
• 3:06
Having said that, I can see that his decision seems to be or
• 3:10
would have seen at the time the correct one.
• 3:12
I think we would both have agreed with him.
• 3:14
He made this investment, but then as you say, he had possible
• 3:17
exposure because he because he had shares in the company such
• 3:23
that he might have lost his house or his savings.
• 3:26
So why take that risk, you know, on this rather disreputable
• 3:31
looking set up, I mean, why take the risk and you can see that
• 3:35
unwillingness to take a risk. Did it cost him money?
• 3:40
Well, it cost him potential money of that huge amount that
• 3:43
you said there's a Bible verse about using your talents and one
• 3:48
the one person who's given the talents by the Lord, you know,
• 3:51
representing God in the, in the story in the Bible, one of them
• 3:55
just buries his talent in the ground and then doesn't do
• 3:58
anything with it. And he doesn't take the
• 3:59
investment. He doesn't want to take the
• 4:01
risk. And this is whereas someone who
• 4:03
uses the the talent they have the talent in this case being
• 4:07
money, you know, it's used figuratively to mean abilities
• 4:10
these days. But the actual story is using
• 4:13
money to help and investing it in something that then produces
• 4:18
not just a profit, but success. You know, building the Kingdom
• 4:21
as it put in the Bible or or in this case, providing people with
• 4:26
Apple computers, which for much, I don't know really want how
• 4:30
much we want to go to this into this.
• 4:31
But I would say for much of its of its life as a company have
• 4:36
been innovative and great quality products.
• 4:39
  Maybe. Not so much.
• 4:40
Today. Well, I think that one of the
• 4:43
things we ought to note is, of course, we today definitely look
• 4:46
upon Apple as one of the most important manufacturers and
• 4:52
  producers of products, technological products
• 4:55
throughout the world. But of course, in the beginning,
• 4:57
it took a while to take off the original Apple computers as they
• 5:03
were sort of folding did take a long time and they were very
• 5:07
expensive or perceived to be expensive.
• 5:09
And so that was really one of the challenges.
• 5:13
Now of course, they also went public as well.
• 5:15
So the share price were sort of fluctuated quite dramatically.
• 5:20
And I think we we ought to mention as well is that Steve
• 5:24
Jobs, albeit that again was absolutely fundamental in the
• 5:27
beginning, fell out of favour with the Apple board.
• 5:31
And it wasn't until we got into the 1990s that we saw that they
• 5:35
started to re evaluate their products and actually did
• 5:39
something which I think was really cutting edge.
• 5:42
Now, of course, when we think about the home, if you look in
• 5:46
anybody's home, you've probably got a computer and almost
• 5:49
certainly you may have an Apple, whether it be an iPhone or
• 5:51
whether it be a laptop or something else.
• 5:54
But at the time, in the 70s and early 80s, most people didn't
• 5:58
have a computer in their home. But of course, making it much
• 6:01
more affordable and attractive, the visual look of the computer.
• 6:05
And Jobs was very much a visionary.
• 6:07
Well, yes, I think this is the key thing.
• 6:09
I mean, the key change in thinking was originally under
• 6:13
Steve Rudd Wozniak, who was the sort of technical brains behind
• 6:17
it, I would say. At least that's what he says.
• 6:20
But no, he was he was the guy who had the the real technic in
• 6:23
depth technical, Oh yes, was produce a computer for for
• 6:27
  people who were computer enthusiasts.
• 6:29
You had loads of different ports that you could plug different
• 6:32
different other gadgets into. You had a memory that could be
• 6:36
added to. In fact, everything could be
• 6:38
added to. That was the beauty of it.
• 6:40
And Steve Jobs, his change in that was to say, no, we just
• 6:45
make it simple so we could just plug it in and use it.
• 6:47
That was the genius move. Well, I think there was another
• 6:51
genius move. Many people forget this, but
• 6:54
basically in 1997, Jobs made peace with his longtime rival,
• 6:58
yes, Bill Gates, and he worked out a deal that included 150
• 7:02
million cash infusion to the Windows maker.
• 7:05
Now, of course, this was rather significant because it did open
• 7:07
up the opportunity for the iMac. And of course, very much a
• 7:11
little bit later, Jobs introduced the iPod.
• 7:14
Do you remember that? The music storage device,
• 7:17
probably some people have got them scuttled away in a drawer
• 7:20
somewhere. But the fact is, what you
• 7:22
started, what you started to see is then the emergence of the
• 7:26
iPhone because all of the devices, it's one device
• 7:30
basically, not multiple devices. The iPhone basically changed the
• 7:35
game, yes. And I guess the, the
• 7:37
presentation of that when he was presenting it to the, the Apple
• 7:41
staff, but it, you know, it was broadcast when they, he was
• 7:44
saying, and we've got 3 new products.
• 7:47
  It's, it's a phone, it's a music device and it's an Internet
• 7:53
  browsing device. It's a phone, it's a it's music,
• 7:56
it's Internet browsing. And he kept and on the screen
• 7:58
the three devices were moving round and then it he said, do
• 8:02
you see what it is yet or it's a worse than effect?
• 8:04
And it was just one device. And so, yeah, the, the iPod, a
• 8:08
phone and and then your, your computer access to the Internet
• 8:14
were all in your hand. Yeah.
• 8:15
But again, this move was simplifying Steve's.
• 8:20
Steve Jobs's genius was thinking in in the way that the consumer
• 8:27
would think. Not a computer or gadget
• 8:30
  enthusiast. What do they want?
• 8:31
They want it all at hand, easy to use, and you just have to
• 8:36
press a button. And eventually, of course, that
• 8:39
became just press the screen. And then that Genius grew as a
• 8:44
Apple beyond all recognition. Massive company, big valuation
• 8:49
as you say, and it changed the way that we interact not just
• 8:54
with the computers and the Internet, but with each other.
• 8:57
Oh yes, yeah. Well, what's interesting
• 9:01
absolutely it's, but it's also become a device which it's
• 9:04
almost impossible now to, to navigate your way around the
• 9:10
world without having a mobile phone.
• 9:13
Now of course, I know iPhones are not the only phone.
• 9:16
So, but we are celebrating Apple.
• 9:18
There are over 3 billion iPhones that have been sold this century
• 9:25
alone. And what's interesting is, is
• 9:27
that since the Steve Jobs died, and of course we saw that there
• 9:32
was another big hero, still very much a champion of industry
• 9:37
today, Tim Cook. Tim took over the leadership of
• 9:40
this of this organization. And what we have to understand
• 9:44
is that Apple is worth 10 times more than its 350 billion market
• 9:48
value since Jobs died. So the point being is the
• 9:53
success of Apple is around his phones, it's around his
• 9:56
products, but it's also about the people behind it.
• 9:59
If you get the right leader and they've got a vision and they've
• 10:03
got a very good control of their operations, then you know that
• 10:06
you've got a chance. So I think, I think Mr. Pete,
• 10:09
what we're celebrating here is not just the technological
• 10:12
revolution, I think it's also a business revolution.
• 10:15
They're a very good organized, well organized company, got
• 10:19
their manufacturing base sorted out, got their distribution
• 10:22
right, and crucially got their branding right.
• 10:25
It's a very clean, consistent brand and everybody recognises
• 10:29
  it. It's almost that desirable
• 10:31
  device, isn't it? The one?
• 10:32
I know it's expensive folks, but you can't get away from the fact
• 10:36
that most people want one. What say you about the appeal of
• 10:43
  an Apple? Oh man.
