- 0:13Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm your host, Coleen Witt, and today we have a
- 0:18Speaker 1: very very special guest, Nick Cannon is in the building.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Here weird blessing and salutations.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Yes, and you are very nice enough to let us
- 0:27Speaker 1: come to your studio.
- 0:29Speaker 3: In my kitchen. Your kitchen, Your kitchen is nothing but candy.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Yes it's color. I've hit a couple of the M
- 0:36Speaker 1: and ms rated a couple of candies. Try not to
- 0:38Speaker 1: break any seals on the candy that hasn't been open.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I mean, that's what it is here for. Though we
- 0:42Speaker 2: always replenishing because people go through this because obviously we
- 0:45Speaker 2: film the day, the Cannon Council, culture, Cannons, class everything here.
- 0:49Speaker 2: It's a music studio as well. Started off as a
- 0:51Speaker 2: music studio. And if you've ever been in long nights
- 0:54Speaker 2: in the studio, you always got the munchies and want snacks.
- 0:57Speaker 3: So I'm a candy crackhead.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So I got one of these, and like every one
- 1:02Speaker 2: of my offices in every house I got, I always
- 1:04Speaker 2: gotta have like a candy candy room.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I just have one question. Out of all these candies,
- 1:09Speaker 1: this candy, that's the cotton candy, Hot Tomorrow.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Hot to Cotton candy.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Does someone just randomly go places and say, let me
- 1:17Speaker 1: just find the most random candy I could find me.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I do that.
- 1:21Speaker 1: So you found that candy?
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah? I think that got that in Las Vegas?
- 1:24Speaker 1: Did you actually try it?
- 1:25Speaker 3: I always buy one to try and then like one.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, Like I even think, like I usually keep
- 1:31Speaker 2: from like stuff like japan and sweeten and I think
- 1:36Speaker 2: having all types of stuff like don't the word like
- 1:38Speaker 2: easter bunny warheads and like it's I'm literally about this candy,
- 1:44Speaker 2: like like anything that's like.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Blue raspberry lemon.
- 1:48Speaker 2: The sweetish fish from swedenh Wow, It's it's crazy.
- 1:53Speaker 1: So I'm just curious. How was the hot candy cotton candy?
- 1:57Speaker 2: I would rather have them separate.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I like candy like Hot Tomorrow together icy and it's
- 2:04Speaker 1: got centniment in it.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It's just it's just I mean, it's it's it's cool,
- 2:08Speaker 2: but it wasn't.
- 2:09Speaker 3: That's why that's up there.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw it. So my daughter came in here
- 2:13Speaker 1: and I completely forgotten the first thing. She's like, Mommy,
- 2:16Speaker 1: let me get that, let me get that.
- 2:18Speaker 2: This look like oh yeah, because what I mean Also
- 2:20Speaker 2: I'm a I'm a health freak too, so I do
- 2:22Speaker 2: recognize all this is poison. This is like none of
- 2:26Speaker 2: this stuff is good for you. But you know there's
- 2:29Speaker 2: another section in this place where it's all about health
- 2:31Speaker 2: and wellness. And I do understand that life is all
- 2:33Speaker 2: about balance. So for me, I know how to have fun.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I don't do drugs. I don't drink alcohol. You know,
- 2:41Speaker 2: so like if I had to have, you know, one
- 2:43Speaker 2: major vice in life, it would most likely be candy
- 2:46Speaker 2: and women. That's too right, Yeah that's true.
- 2:53Speaker 3: But one has me in the dinnist a lot, and
- 2:55Speaker 3: one has me with a lot of kids.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So now I asked you take me back to what
- 3:06Speaker 1: you were eating when you were broke. I'm guessing you
- 3:10Speaker 1: being broke had to have been in your early teens.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I still got a broke mentality.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I'm one of those people you can never take the
- 3:19Speaker 2: hood out of me, and that's why I still eat
- 3:21Speaker 2: a lot of this stuff to this day. But I
- 3:24Speaker 2: know this is you know, I can't cook, so like
- 3:27Speaker 2: it's certain things that because all my life I've probably
- 3:30Speaker 2: been on the grind and working, so I never learned
- 3:33Speaker 2: how to cook. That was always my grandmother, my mom.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I can make simple stuff like eggs. I can make eggs,
- 3:42Speaker 2: you know, like if I have to. I actually love
- 3:45Speaker 2: when it goes comes to my healthy stuff. I eat
- 3:48Speaker 2: at least two to four boiled eggs every day, so
- 3:51Speaker 2: I know how to do that myself.
- 3:54Speaker 1: The boiled eggs.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, boiler it's just as long as you don't break them.
- 4:02Speaker 2: That's the train.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I thought that was an earthquake.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Sometimes sometimes because there's an earthquakes, sometimes you can't tell
- 4:10Speaker 2: the difference or was the earthquake or was the train.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I'm not even gonna lie. Bar Me was like, whoa
- 4:15Speaker 1: that right.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Next to the train track.
- 4:20Speaker 2: But yeah, so I still love this stuff that we're
- 4:23Speaker 2: gonna do today.
- 4:24Speaker 3: I still eat this.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Stuff as snacks and these technically most of them are
- 4:28Speaker 2: like on the healthier side, especially you know the ones
- 4:32Speaker 2: I have with the fruit.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So so walk our guests through it.
- 4:36Speaker 2: It was when we started with a three course meal.
- 4:38Speaker 2: So yes, we got we got the appetizer, we got
- 4:41Speaker 2: the main course, and we got the dessert.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Okay, let's start with the appetizer.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Okay, so the appetizer to me is because you gotta
- 4:49Speaker 2: try this too, right, the appetizers both eating this, I
- 4:53Speaker 2: want to take it, but this one is probably the
- 4:57Speaker 2: only one that you might be like, yo, that's a
- 4:59Speaker 2: little bit out there is the sunflowers. First of all,
- 5:04Speaker 2: in the hood, I'm scared flower seats. And this is
- 5:07Speaker 2: I started this before there were flavored some flower seeds.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Back in the day, you could just get the David
- 5:13Speaker 2: some flower seeds. They would sell them at the ice
- 5:15Speaker 2: cream truck. You had a little bag and then a
- 5:17Speaker 2: big bag, and we just would want them to taste different.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And it was at the time where salt and vinegar
- 5:23Speaker 2: chips were out, so I was like, yo, why.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Don't they have salt and vinegar sunflower seeds. So went
- 5:31Speaker 3: my mama's cabinet.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, I guess I'm regular. I prefer, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 2: the the white vinegar, but you can get the apple cider.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I didn't know what. I was like, I can't, this
- 5:43Speaker 1: is gonna.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Be behind and usually you gotta maybe you gotta let
- 5:47Speaker 2: it sit and marinate for a while. The only thing
- 5:51Speaker 2: about this because if you let it sit and marinate,
- 5:53Speaker 2: they get soft, and so you can kind of like
- 5:56Speaker 2: it's a vibe.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I can honestly say I've never in life ever ever
- 6:02Speaker 1: did this.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So I mean it's some hood this, This might be
- 6:05Speaker 2: some San Diego likes to just literally have vinegar. It's
- 6:12Speaker 2: just like regular some flower seeds. But I would probably
- 6:15Speaker 2: let them sit and something. We would put it right
- 6:16Speaker 2: in the bag and just shake it up and how
- 6:18Speaker 2: your fingers stinking. But it's really delicious, sir, hilarious.
- 6:23Speaker 1: So I did peek that about some flower seeds today,
- 6:25Speaker 1: that there were flavors. It was almost impossible to get
- 6:28Speaker 1: plain really had everything.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Now they done turned up as you see right there.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Right when I walked in, I was like, look at
- 6:35Speaker 1: all these sunflower seeds right here eating it.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I eat some flower seats like crazy, like that's.
- 6:42Speaker 1: My whole you did you try one right now?
- 6:43Speaker 2: I did.
- 6:44Speaker 3: That's why I'm talking.
- 6:45Speaker 2: It's a little it's right, it's cool right all day,
- 6:54Speaker 2: perfect appetiser snack.
- 6:56Speaker 1: You know what the vinegar really works? I can, Yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 1: that's impressibly good.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I'm telling you. Normally you need a paper towel something
- 7:08Speaker 2: to spit it into. But that's just like one of
- 7:11Speaker 2: my favorite hood hood snacks right there to where thank you.
- 7:16Speaker 2: I'm still to this day like no matter all this
- 7:19Speaker 2: stuff I got.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I'll make this. Go watch a movie.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I feel like your brother eat this. Huh yeah, okay, okay,
- 7:31Speaker 1: shout outs to this appetizer is a win, yes, okay.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And it's very ghetto, ghetto fabulous.
- 7:38Speaker 1: It's good. It's actually impressively good. I would have never
- 7:42Speaker 1: thought to do this wrong. All right, So we survived
- 7:46Speaker 1: the We survived. It survived the sult and vinegar sunflower seasons.
- 7:52Speaker 1: A plus for appetizer. What's the main course?
- 7:55Speaker 3: All right?
- 7:56Speaker 2: Now the way we're gonna rock the main course. I
- 7:59Speaker 2: literally to eat this for dinner because I was broke,
- 8:02Speaker 2: so even you know, growing up in.
- 8:04Speaker 3: The projects in the hood.
- 8:06Speaker 2: This was like when my grandmother or mom was at
- 8:10Speaker 2: work or doing something and I had to eat and
- 8:12Speaker 2: thin for myself.
- 8:13Speaker 3: This is this was like my favorite thing I was.
- 8:16Speaker 2: I didn't want to eat all of the other stuff
- 8:18Speaker 2: that you know, was forced upon me. This was like
- 8:22Speaker 2: my favorite meal. And it was one or two others.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I am a fiend for hot sauce.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I collect them.
- 8:28Speaker 2: I got a bunch of different ones, but the crystal is,
- 8:31Speaker 2: as I call it, the crystal is my favorite.
- 8:33Speaker 1: So they corrected us here. They were like, hey, don't
- 8:35Speaker 1: put it because we put another one out and there
- 8:37Speaker 1: it's like you don't have the crystals. It was like
- 8:38Speaker 1: we do, and it was like only put the crystals.
- 8:40Speaker 2: For that's the thing too, Like hold on because you
- 8:42Speaker 2: got there's two styles of this, so you could go,
- 8:45Speaker 2: I'm gonna walk over here. You can go crystal, or
- 8:48Speaker 2: you can go a little more Spanish and go. I
- 8:52Speaker 2: would see you guys, probably get a shot of this.
- 8:54Speaker 2: This is literally just just a whole thing of hot
- 8:58Speaker 2: sauce and oh my goodness, oh they bugging they ran out.
- 9:05Speaker 3: All right, we'll go with this one.
- 9:07Speaker 1: But I got like ten bottles of ten they ran
- 9:13Speaker 1: out of top of TiO. Maybe, dude, you know what
- 9:17Speaker 1: I was gonna bring type of TiO, but I wasn't
- 9:19Speaker 1: too sure if it would.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Count somebody it might be upstairs. But anyways, we got
- 9:25Speaker 2: the other one, so you can you can do this
- 9:27Speaker 2: Louisiana style or you could do the Mexican version.
- 9:31Speaker 3: We canna do the We'll use the Valentina on that one.
- 9:34Speaker 2: So just because I love hot sauce on any and everything,
- 9:39Speaker 2: and sometimes all we had was either.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Mic awave popcorn and literally we would eat that for dinner.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So eat that for dinner.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Yeah, because I mean, when you think about it, it'll fill
- 9:50Speaker 2: you up, and like you can get like a whole
- 9:52Speaker 2: box of it for like five dollars.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And kids love popcorn, so I didn't know. I thought
- 9:59Speaker 3: it was a treat. Literally eat a bag.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Of popcorn for once. Once I was a teenager on
- 10:04Speaker 2: my own. I couldn't cook, so I'll just eat popcorn
- 10:07Speaker 2: for dinner. And I would put hot sauce on it.
- 10:11Speaker 2: So sorry, So I'm gonna do. I'm gonna pip, I'm
- 10:14Speaker 2: gonna put the Louisiana.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Okay, so this is dinner you never had, you never had.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I'm not a hot sauce fan, Okay, I'm really taking
- 10:25Speaker 1: one form team today.
- 10:26Speaker 2: This is Pete and poetic Justice.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Janet Jackson did this. She was eating the hot sauce
- 10:34Speaker 3: and popcorn. I was like, yo, That's why I knew
- 10:36Speaker 3: he was kindred spirits.
- 10:39Speaker 2: It was my type of woman. So we're gonna do now.
- 10:42Speaker 2: You can still and even I'll put it a little
- 10:44Speaker 2: bit on on the laced potato chips. That's the other
- 10:48Speaker 2: thing we had a lot of. But I'm gonna give you.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I'm gonna give you that the main kind of vibe.
- 10:54Speaker 2: And even if like this is the hot sauce. If
- 10:56Speaker 2: you see the street vendors and they making like whatever,
- 10:59Speaker 2: they have like different type of Mexican snacks, they use
- 11:04Speaker 2: this type or you're like you put this on Tomalwi's
- 11:06Speaker 2: and all of that type of stuff.
- 11:07Speaker 1: So this, oh, this one looks legit.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the so I want. I'm gonna want you
- 11:12Speaker 2: to taste one of both. If you don't like hot sauce, I.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Go my water here, I should have had milk or something, right, Okay,
- 11:22Speaker 1: I'm preparing. I'm prepared.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Should be easy on that.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Okay, here we go, Here we go. That's not bad
- 11:31Speaker 1: at all.
- 11:36Speaker 3: I'm a hot sauce lover.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I feel like Martin Lawrence, remember Martin Lawrence. Just be
- 11:39Speaker 1: like right, like, that's not that bad now. The dark
- 11:45Speaker 1: color scares me.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, you gotta just take Here we go.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Jesus be with me.
- 11:52Speaker 3: That's gonna be hot for you. Your whole pip.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Nick, you know a lot of the ways to walk.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I love it. That's our main course. We went. We
- 12:08Speaker 3: went Casun and Mexican, two of my favorite types of foods.
- 12:13Speaker 1: So that wasn't even that bad though I survived it,
- 12:17Speaker 1: not that bad. Would never do it again in life,
- 12:20Speaker 1: but not that bad.
- 12:20Speaker 2: All right.
- 12:21Speaker 3: So now we're trying to you ready to go to dessert.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Man, I'm looking at this watermelon. You keep looking at lemons?
- 12:25Speaker 1: All right, what's dessert?
- 12:27Speaker 2: Because I'm the you gotta try the limits before the
- 12:29Speaker 2: water because just again another thing. Growing up, didn't have
- 12:36Speaker 2: a lot, but we may do what we had so
- 12:40Speaker 2: paper plated that we don't have no paper places here today,
- 12:44Speaker 2: or do we have a we do?
- 12:45Speaker 3: I think I think we got paper plates. We still
- 12:48Speaker 3: keep it a little ghetto.
- 12:50Speaker 1: We had the little ones. Yeah, I thought I thought
- 12:53Speaker 1: to do this, but the table was so small. I
- 12:55Speaker 1: was like, we're gonna try to make it work.
- 12:56Speaker 3: This is what I used to do.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I used to take regular sugar sure came by the pound,
- 13:03Speaker 2: C and H back in the day, and get a
- 13:06Speaker 2: whole plate.
- 13:07Speaker 3: And now I wasn't really allowed to do this.
- 13:09Speaker 2: My grandmother used to hate when I did it, but
- 13:12Speaker 2: to eat fruit and like fruit, you know, when I'm
- 13:15Speaker 2: not eating candy and stuff, and it's funny enough, like
- 13:17Speaker 2: I'm actually going on a fast next week.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I do it every year at the top of the
- 13:21Speaker 3: year and.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Sometimes I can cut sugar out completely for like six months.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I just I don't set a date or whatever. I
- 13:27Speaker 3: know I got to do at least thirty days.
- 13:29Speaker 2: But I'll just try to do it as long as
- 13:30Speaker 2: possible because I love it so much.
- 13:32Speaker 3: It's all about discipline.
- 13:34Speaker 2: So next Sunday is actually when I start my sugar fast.
- 13:38Speaker 3: So this is probably gonna be.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I'm going to try and join you on that because
- 13:43Speaker 1: I need to. I've been like telling myself I'm going
- 13:45Speaker 1: to cut it, but like the second I'm in a
- 13:46Speaker 1: room with it, I'm like.
- 13:47Speaker 3: It's posy.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I'm addicted to it, like like I know I'm gonna
- 13:51Speaker 2: add it, but all right. So yeah, So when I
- 13:55Speaker 2: was a kid, I would literally get a paper plate,
- 13:57Speaker 2: fill it with sugar.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Wasn't supposed to do this.
- 14:00Speaker 2: There would always be lemons from a lemon tree or
- 14:02Speaker 2: something like that. Cut the lemon in half or you know.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Now I'm a little bit more sophisticated, slice it and
- 14:11Speaker 2: just I would literally be sitting watching cartoons and it's
- 14:14Speaker 2: natural candy.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Like I feel like my daughter would love this, absolutely
- 14:19Speaker 1: love this.
- 14:19Speaker 3: It's amazing.
- 14:20Speaker 2: It's like lemonade.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I feel like I'm like this.
- 14:24Speaker 3: If you like sour, it's a vibe.
- 14:28Speaker 1: This is amazing, right did you come up with this one?
- 14:32Speaker 3: It was as a kid. This is all I used
- 14:34Speaker 3: to eat.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Wanted life should have one of these.
- 14:40Speaker 2: That is amazing fire right, so write before my sugar fast.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Oh my god, I'm a double dip as you should.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Normally you would have your own plate so you can triple,
- 14:52Speaker 2: quadruple get and matter of fact, and then you know
- 14:57Speaker 2: now that we really sophisticated.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Yo, that right there, and you just go ahead and
- 15:02Speaker 1: sprinkle that right there.
- 15:03Speaker 3: That's the one, right.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Is the best of the best of the best.
- 15:06Speaker 2: That is a lot of people don't do desserts right.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Every once in a while we'll get a guest that
- 15:11Speaker 1: doesn't desert like they'll do like you know, DJ Charismas.
- 15:15Speaker 1: She did like a tortilla. The last one she did
- 15:18Speaker 1: like three courses with one tortilla, and she did a
- 15:20Speaker 1: cinnamon sugar.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah, because I was thinking nothing, but I knew you
- 15:24Speaker 2: gotta have an oven for that oven really working on
- 15:27Speaker 2: when I wanted to. But we would take regular wonder
- 15:30Speaker 2: bread and put cinnamon, sugar and butter. I call it
- 15:33Speaker 2: cinnamon nigga crunch.
- 15:38Speaker 1: But this right here is my favorite. This may replace
- 15:40Speaker 1: my well, I guess this couldn't go on the processed
- 15:43Speaker 1: sugar diet because of the sugar.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Right, it's better than candy.
- 15:46Speaker 1: But you could do honey.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Maybe maybe ave might be fires.
- 15:51Speaker 4: But just right here, if you like warhead, sour patch, lemonheads,
- 16:03Speaker 4: this is the og.
- 16:03Speaker 3: This is where all that came from.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Okay, you was winning with this, Okay, all right?
- 16:08Speaker 2: Number one.
- 16:08Speaker 1: This is the lemon, the lemon, the sugar.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Yeah, all right. And now the one that you have
- 16:14Speaker 2: to prepare the most. And I actually eat this every
- 16:18Speaker 2: single day. And when I'm on my sugar fast, I
- 16:23Speaker 2: tap into this. I eat a lot of fruit and
- 16:26Speaker 2: this becomes my dessert.
- 16:29Speaker 3: I'm the biggest fan of the heim. You can put
- 16:31Speaker 3: this on.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Any fruit really, from apples, oranges, any fruit, a lot.
- 16:36Speaker 3: You see it on a lot of drinks and stuff
- 16:38Speaker 3: like that.
- 16:38Speaker 2: But I grew up with this Mexican candy, out of
- 16:41Speaker 2: all candies, is my favorite candy. Grew up going to
- 16:44Speaker 2: the ice cream truck with you know, penny rolls and
- 16:47Speaker 2: trying to get whatever I can from and I got
- 16:49Speaker 2: it in here. It's like a whole Mexican section, like
- 16:54Speaker 2: the Tamarindo, like all of that stuff. So this is
- 16:58Speaker 2: really where all of it started. And you can see
- 17:00Speaker 2: out here in California there's fruit trucks, you know, fruit
- 17:06Speaker 2: men or women that we are pushing fruit. Uh, and
- 17:10Speaker 2: it's all fresh, amazing fruit. You can buy mango, gave, pineapple,
- 17:18Speaker 2: and watermelon. But this is something I grew up on
- 17:22Speaker 2: and I still eat every single day. And it's literally
- 17:25Speaker 2: to hem, which is a little spicy on.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Any fruit. But since we black, we gonna do watermelon today.
- 17:35Speaker 2: That's no sugar. Now to this, I believe I don't
- 17:42Speaker 2: know which chamoy you can actually get a sugar free chamoy.
- 17:47Speaker 3: But as you see, it's zero calories.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Let's see if this one has sugar in it? No,
- 17:56Speaker 2: well zero total sugar zero, So this is zero sugar one. Now,
- 18:00Speaker 2: the thing about this uh chmoy is actually uh it
- 18:05Speaker 2: is it's a fruit as well, and it's mixed in
- 18:07Speaker 2: with normally lemon juice, salt, water and then a bunch
- 18:16Speaker 2: of other stuff a bra pepper's spicy. It does have
- 18:20Speaker 2: a little sweet texture to it. Uh.
- 18:22Speaker 3: If you're trying to do no sugar, if you don't care.
- 18:25Speaker 3: They have the ones that are like.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Literally, so this will be in your diet next week.
- 18:30Speaker 3: I will have a sugar free chamoy next week.
- 18:33Speaker 2: But sometimes I won't even I'll just do the ta
- 18:35Speaker 2: hem and the fruit because this is kind of hard
- 18:38Speaker 2: to find.
- 18:39Speaker 3: I'm trying to think. See now you have to be
- 18:41Speaker 3: going back to my going back to the cabinet, because.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I think we got like, ah, yeah, see this is
- 18:48Speaker 2: this is the one right here?
- 18:50Speaker 1: Is it the sweet one?
- 18:51Speaker 2: This is the sweet one.
- 18:52Speaker 1: That's the one I want.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Like, because tomoy has to flavor, has the really sweet one,
- 18:57Speaker 2: and then this is this one is kind of like
- 18:58Speaker 2: a little spy seeing hot.
- 19:01Speaker 3: So let me take this one from you. I'll give
- 19:06Speaker 3: you a fresh one.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Yeah, because you know I'm gonna want the sweet.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the sweet one.
- 19:18Speaker 1: So just a little fun fact. I'm from New York
- 19:21Speaker 1: and it took me almost till last year to start
- 19:24Speaker 1: putting lemon on my mango. So I've been evolving, you know.
- 19:29Speaker 1: But usually if I see someone on the streets selling fruit,
- 19:32Speaker 1: it's watermelon and mango. But now I'm like, squeeze a
- 19:35Speaker 1: lemon on it. But I haven't graduated to ta heen
- 19:39Speaker 1: and none of the other stuff yet. So here we go.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Let me make let me make it the taen up
- 19:44Speaker 2: a little bit. That'll probably be the best one for
- 19:46Speaker 2: this one, right there.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, cheers, there we go.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Bomb.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I'm telling you, shout out to that one.
- 19:57Speaker 3: I want sweet. That one's super spicy.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Where did you say if it has sugar or not?
- 20:04Speaker 2: That one has sugar? I mean you can just look
- 20:06Speaker 2: at this.
- 20:06Speaker 1: No, But if I were to go in the store
- 20:07Speaker 1: and I try to buy this, how do I know.
- 20:09Speaker 3: What you well, because it's just like the consistence.
- 20:12Speaker 1: That one is awesome, darker and.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Thicker, literally bottle of candy.
- 20:18Speaker 3: But this one is kind of more, you know, spicy.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Mmm, So I want your special and like they put.
- 20:28Speaker 3: It in they put it.
- 20:31Speaker 2: In ice cream out here, they put it on like everything.
- 20:34Speaker 2: So what is that's that's eating while I broke this
- 20:38Speaker 2: is this is.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Stuff everything horse meal. So, now that I've gotten to
- 20:45Speaker 1: walk in your shoes as a young buck, take me
- 20:48Speaker 1: back to what was going on around this time, like
- 20:51Speaker 1: in your in your home life, hustling you were in
- 20:54Speaker 1: high school.
- 20:55Speaker 3: I grew up. I grew up interesting.
- 20:57Speaker 2: My grandpa, my parents were teenagers, so I was a
- 21:02Speaker 2: latch key kid moved all over the place cause my parent,
- 21:04Speaker 2: my dad, moved away to North Carolina, where our family
- 21:08Speaker 2: is originally from, to go to college and be in
- 21:10Speaker 2: the ministry. My mom went to nursing school after she graduated.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I went to like my dad's high school graduation. I
- 21:18Speaker 2: was around, so we were all kids, and so my
- 21:21Speaker 2: grandparents stepped up and help so and you know, I
- 21:26Speaker 2: was one of many of my grandmother's children. She was
- 21:28Speaker 2: also a foster mom, so it was always a house
- 21:30Speaker 2: full of kids in the projects. And this that's kind
- 21:34Speaker 2: of where my I had to find my own identity,
- 21:39Speaker 2: being my mom's only.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Child, my dad's oldest child.
- 21:44Speaker 2: And one of many with my grandmother and kind of
- 21:47Speaker 2: like her baby. But there were other younger foster kids,
- 21:49Speaker 2: so I kind of had the experience of everything that
- 21:52Speaker 2: gave me.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I know how to be a big brother, I know
- 21:55Speaker 3: how to be a little brother.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I know how to be a spoiled only child, but
- 21:58Speaker 2: I know how to be a house full of kids.
- 22:00Speaker 2: So I got to experience life in such a way
- 22:04Speaker 2: and I think it made me a unique individual. And
- 22:06Speaker 2: then by the time I was a teenager, I was
- 22:08Speaker 2: kind of living on my own by the time I
- 22:09Speaker 2: was like sixteen fifteen sixteen, and that's when I moved
- 22:14Speaker 2: to Hollywood to kind of hustle and do my thing
- 22:17Speaker 2: I've been doing.
- 22:17Speaker 3: I've been doing stand up since I was like eleven twelve.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Oh okay, my.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Dad inspired me to do that when I was living
- 22:23Speaker 2: with him out moved back and forth with my parents
- 22:26Speaker 2: all the time, and you know, during the time of
- 22:29Speaker 2: probably like around eleven, my dad was preaching and doing
- 22:32Speaker 2: stuff and he would have let me do stand up
- 22:35Speaker 2: comedy when he was he had public access shows and
- 22:38Speaker 2: was preaching all over the South, and I would go
- 22:41Speaker 2: with him.
- 22:41Speaker 3: I would help him with all that.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Stuff, and I you know, he said I wanted to
- 22:45Speaker 2: be a rapper, but he was like, yo, you're funnier
- 22:47Speaker 2: than just every kid in thehood wants to be a rapper.
- 22:48Speaker 3: You should work on your comedy, work on your hosting.
- 22:51Speaker 2: And you know cut today probably you know, one of
- 22:54Speaker 2: the most popular and biggest television hosting the game.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Yeah, well you're also the youngest writer in bad in
- 23:03Speaker 1: television history.
- 23:04Speaker 2: But was that all started from when me and my
- 23:07Speaker 2: dad taught me how to do all of this stuff before? Like,
- 23:10Speaker 2: I mean, everybody does it now, but back then, like
- 23:12Speaker 2: having a camera and interviewing people like that was rare
- 23:16Speaker 2: and I was a kid doing it. So he trained
- 23:18Speaker 2: me when I was like eleven twelve, that kind of
- 23:20Speaker 2: we had to take workshop courses and things like that
- 23:23Speaker 2: to work in public access. And that's when I learned
- 23:26Speaker 2: about script writing and you know, set design and lighting
- 23:30Speaker 2: and all of that stuff. At like eleven, you get
- 23:32Speaker 2: all these certificates and then that's how you work your
- 23:34Speaker 2: hours on cable vision in North Carolina, and that's I
- 23:39Speaker 2: always just wanted to be a writer from that point
- 23:41Speaker 2: on and wanted to be behind the scenes and produce
- 23:44Speaker 2: stuff for others. And I produced my first show is
- 23:47Speaker 2: called check This Out in nineteen ninety two, I believe,
- 23:53Speaker 2: and we had like twenty episodes or something like that
- 23:56Speaker 2: public Access North Carolina, and I just the bug bit
- 24:01Speaker 2: me from there, the comedy bug and the TV bug,
- 24:04Speaker 2: and you know, came back, went to high school out
- 24:08Speaker 2: out here in California and literally would drive two and
- 24:11Speaker 2: a half hours, catch a ride after school to the
- 24:15Speaker 2: comedy store to the improv wow.
- 24:17Speaker 1: At that young age.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yes it's fifteen, sixteen years old, stand out there and then.
- 24:22Speaker 1: You know, was it tough getting into the clubs.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Of that age, Absolutely, but I was.
- 24:26Speaker 2: It was tough because I wasn't supposed to be there,
- 24:28Speaker 2: But it was easy for me because I was the
- 24:29Speaker 2: only kid out there. So I was like I was
- 24:32Speaker 2: a novelty. I was thinking like, oh, what is this
- 24:34Speaker 2: kid doing? When I would come on stage, I could
- 24:36Speaker 2: easily rock because I was like it was it was, it.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Was a gimmick.
- 24:41Speaker 2: It was like, oh, he's a young pheenom and he's
- 24:45Speaker 2: in the club full of a bunch of drunk adults,
- 24:47Speaker 2: you know, talking about gas money and detention, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 2: so it's like, uh, it worked. I stood out from
- 24:53Speaker 2: all the other comedians, so all the agents and managers
- 24:56Speaker 2: would take notice of me because it was this cute
- 24:58Speaker 2: little kid on stage.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Jokes.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Now, what were your grandparents saying at the time and
- 25:03Speaker 1: your family saying at the time when you're like getting
- 25:05Speaker 1: in the car driving Hollywood shooting your shot.
- 25:09Speaker 3: None of them liked it, you know what I mean.
- 25:11Speaker 2: But one thing that actually saved me because at that time,
- 25:15Speaker 2: especially like fifteen sixteen years old, I had started. I
- 25:20Speaker 2: had there was a huge, you know, influx of gang
- 25:25Speaker 2: violence in my community, and I was influenced by that
- 25:27Speaker 2: pretty big and that's just where we were. It was
- 25:30Speaker 2: where we grew up, you know, Southeast San Diego. And
- 25:33Speaker 2: then by the time I in high school, went to
- 25:35Speaker 2: high school in this area called Spring Valley and just
- 25:38Speaker 2: a lot of neighborhoods wasn't getting along. So a lot
- 25:40Speaker 2: of my friends was getting murdered, getting shot.
- 25:44Speaker 3: You know, we were selling drugs, you know, nothing crazy big.
- 25:47Speaker 2: You know, we were selling weed and stuff like that.
- 25:49Speaker 3: You know, a couple of us were selling crack.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I never saw crack but my but you know, my stepdad,
- 25:56Speaker 2: my mom's husband, was one of the biggest dope dealers
- 25:58Speaker 2: in San Diego.
- 25:58Speaker 3: So I was always around.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:00Speaker 3: So like my.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Pops was a preacher and my step pops was a
- 26:04Speaker 2: crack dealer.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Like that's I was like, I'm all right.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Instead of rich dad, poor dad, I'm alright, preacher dad,
- 26:10Speaker 2: crack dealing dad. But I was always around it. And
- 26:17Speaker 2: Hollywood saved me because literally I remember going to my
- 26:20Speaker 2: grandfather and there was like, yeah, I'm afraid I'm gonna
- 26:21Speaker 2: get shot. Friend, I'm gonna die, And he was like
- 26:24Speaker 2: We started going to church up here and at Crenshaw
- 26:29Speaker 2: Christian Center in la and he gave me this the
- 26:33Speaker 2: first book I ever read on my own, called Name It,
- 26:36Speaker 2: Claim It by doctor Frederick K. C. Price, and it
- 26:41Speaker 2: was about speaking things into exact, speaking things into existence,
- 26:45Speaker 2: and positive affirmations way back in the nineties. So you know,
- 26:49Speaker 2: still to this day, I think I have it tatted
- 26:51Speaker 2: on me. It's one of my favorite Bible verses. I
- 26:53Speaker 2: can't pull this all the way up, but it's like
- 26:55Speaker 2: tatted right there. It's Mark eleven twenty three to twenty
- 26:59Speaker 2: four or whatever you desire to believe that you receive it.
- 27:03Speaker 3: And you shall have it when you pray.
- 27:05Speaker 2: And I just lived that, and that to me opened
- 27:08Speaker 2: the doors for me and got me out of all
- 27:10Speaker 2: the wanting to be, you know, a gang banger and
- 27:14Speaker 2: kind of straighten my life up because and that's where
- 27:16Speaker 2: my parents was like, all right, if you finish high school,
- 27:18Speaker 2: you can go do that because we understand it's safer
- 27:21Speaker 2: for you.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Because at the time, and we couldn't go. I couldn't
- 27:23Speaker 3: go anywhere without either they was was.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Getting jumped shot at something like that in our in
- 27:30Speaker 2: our city. Uh So I would leave after school and
- 27:33Speaker 2: go to l A and I felt like a kid.
- 27:36Speaker 3: You know, I felt like I didn't have to worry.
- 27:37Speaker 2: About anything because everybody was older than me and I
- 27:40Speaker 2: had to look over my shoulders and none of that
- 27:42Speaker 2: type of stuff. So it gave me the opportunity to
- 27:45Speaker 2: be creative and young and free. And I literally would be,
- 27:50Speaker 2: you know, on stage with Jamie Fox and you know,
- 27:54Speaker 2: doing everything I could ever imagine, Chris Tucker, Eddie Griffin,
- 27:58Speaker 2: you know, Martin Lawrence, all these people, My people are idolized,
- 28:02Speaker 2: and then I have to drive back and go to
- 28:03Speaker 2: school the next day. I was like, about you roll
- 28:08Speaker 2: his weed up bag these nipper bags up.
- 28:12Speaker 1: But uh so, then your first big break, it's I'm
- 28:16Speaker 1: assuming coming right off the stage, maybe an agent and
- 28:18Speaker 1: a manager. Notice you is that when you get your
- 28:20Speaker 1: first big official break.
- 28:22Speaker 2: It's funny it always happens on my birthday. So I
- 28:27Speaker 2: said God's gift to me. My sixteenth birthday, I was
- 28:30Speaker 2: on stage at the Improv and my manager is still
- 28:32Speaker 2: to my manager to this day. He was there looking
- 28:34Speaker 2: at some of his clients and I had always looked
- 28:38Speaker 2: up to Keenan and Keal and Keenan Thompson was there
- 28:42Speaker 2: and he had brought his manager and it was kind
- 28:46Speaker 2: of cool where he was like I was just telling
- 28:48Speaker 2: him how big a fan. I wasn't like, yo, they
- 28:50Speaker 2: my manager is checking you out. Man. I was like work,
- 28:56Speaker 2: you know.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Literally it was my birth and my birthday was that week.
- 28:59Speaker 2: And then on my birthday, somehow Michael Goldman got my
- 29:04Speaker 2: uh got my information and called me and asked me,
- 29:07Speaker 2: you know, if you.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Can manage me.
- 29:09Speaker 2: And then the next year on my birthday, I seventeen,
- 29:14Speaker 2: is when I got my deal with Will Smith and
- 29:16Speaker 2: his company from my own TV show and record deal.
- 29:19Speaker 2: So it's cool wow.
- 29:20Speaker 1: And then what were you going home? Was the hot
- 29:24Speaker 1: that's because you chose all the hot stuff. You see,
- 29:26Speaker 1: I'm not sniffling nothing.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Guys probably eating it.
- 29:31Speaker 1: So you go home like who was the first person
- 29:34Speaker 1: you're calling and telling and what is your family saying?
- 29:36Speaker 1: I'm assuming it's your family, but what is everybody probably.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Believe me, but it was because even at the time,
- 29:41Speaker 2: like the first job once they started managing me was
- 29:43Speaker 2: behind the scenes. I started being the warm up for
- 29:46Speaker 2: Keenan and Kill and all that. They manded the show
- 29:49Speaker 2: a bunch of shows U and even got a chance
- 29:51Speaker 2: to do like the warm up for like some the
- 29:52Speaker 2: Osen Twins show.
- 29:54Speaker 1: And dang, I remember the Twins like the.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Tg IF Night and Sister Sister.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Like because I was a kid, so the audience would
- 30:04Speaker 2: have a lot of young people in it, especially like
- 30:06Speaker 2: the Nickelodeon shows. So I would entertain the audience for
- 30:10Speaker 2: like four hours while they're filming the show and doing
- 30:12Speaker 2: stuff and telling them what's going on.
- 30:14Speaker 3: So that was my first.
- 30:16Speaker 2: So my name would come up, you know, super fast
- 30:19Speaker 2: at the end of the show, audience warm up, Nick
- 30:21Speaker 2: Cannon and like, my whole family would gather around the
- 30:24Speaker 2: TV just to see that, and I gotta be.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Calling why his name won't come up?
- 30:28Speaker 2: You won't see his name? So like, that's probably the
- 30:31Speaker 2: most excited my family's ever been for me. Since then,
- 30:34Speaker 2: they're like, I don't care, we're tired of seeing uo TV.
- 30:37Speaker 2: But back then, I remember we would gather around and
- 30:40Speaker 2: like white weight to see my name come up at
- 30:43Speaker 2: the end of the.
- 30:44Speaker 3: Show on Nickelodeon.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Now, at that time, what was the money looking like?
- 30:48Speaker 1: Did you feel like you had arrived? You had made
- 30:50Speaker 1: It wasn't enough money to buy every sneaker.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Nah, So at the time, I remember I made a
- 30:58Speaker 2: I wanna say a bet ordeal with my mom because
- 31:01Speaker 2: my mom wasn't feeling it.
- 31:02Speaker 3: My mom was like, you got to go to school.
- 31:05Speaker 2: My mom would even tell me you're not even that funny, like,
- 31:08Speaker 2: because she wanted me to stick to music, and she was,
- 31:11Speaker 2: you know, she had seen me grinding. Her father was
- 31:13Speaker 2: a musician and had left me all of his music
- 31:16Speaker 2: equipment before he died, so it was a real connection.
- 31:18Speaker 2: My mom just wanted me to be a musician, and
- 31:20Speaker 2: I was like, only a comedian. And then she was like,
- 31:23Speaker 2: you're gonna get a job. She made me get a
- 31:25Speaker 2: job at like Wiener Schnitzel, and I was I fucked
- 31:29Speaker 2: that up. I was like cracking jokes. Yeah, it was
- 31:34Speaker 2: horrible going that freezer cleaning the bathrooms.
- 31:37Speaker 3: I was like, all right, I quit. But so my
- 31:43Speaker 3: mom was always like you gotta do something. You can
- 31:46Speaker 3: do that on the.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Side, and she was going through some hardships. She had
- 31:51Speaker 2: like three jobs at one time, and uh, you could
- 31:55Speaker 2: just see the pressure on her. She was just like
- 31:58Speaker 2: trying to do it. Like. She eventually came like, you know,
- 32:01Speaker 2: an accountant for like the major companies.
- 32:03Speaker 3: But it was hard, you know, and.
- 32:06Speaker 2: We lost our house and had to get downsize and.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Get an apartment.
- 32:12Speaker 2: And it was just me and her, and I told her,
- 32:14Speaker 2: I was like, just trust me, have faith, rock with me.
- 32:17Speaker 2: And I said, if you go to church with me
- 32:18Speaker 2: every Sunday, I'll come back and go to church because
- 32:21Speaker 2: she had to because she was mad at the church
- 32:24Speaker 2: from whether it's like her upbringing and you know my
- 32:26Speaker 2: dad and all, he.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Was so churchy. She was like, forget all of that stuff.
- 32:29Speaker 2: And I was like, yo, you just go to church
- 32:31Speaker 2: with me and we're gonna have the faith. And I
- 32:34Speaker 2: guarantee you that in a in a year, I'm gonna
- 32:37Speaker 2: buy you a house.
- 32:38Speaker 1: And then she was and how old were you at
- 32:39Speaker 1: the sign?
- 32:40Speaker 2: That's what as I was sixteen and so I remember
- 32:46Speaker 2: for the warm up checks I started making, I was
- 32:48Speaker 2: making five hundred dollars a week, so that was enough
- 32:51Speaker 2: to get my gas from San Diego to to LA
- 32:55Speaker 2: and pay my mom's rent.
- 32:57Speaker 3: So for that first year.
- 32:59Speaker 2: I was and my mom's RNT and just and then
- 33:02Speaker 2: and then having like pocket a couple hundred dollars of
- 33:04Speaker 2: the pocket at sixteen in the nineties, I was, I
- 33:06Speaker 2: was good and then I got like I said, by
- 33:09Speaker 2: the time.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Did your mom so your mom didn't take the deal
- 33:11Speaker 1: and go to church with you on something.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Yeah, she went and still was like she would go
- 33:15Speaker 2: to church with me every every Sunday, U and I
- 33:18Speaker 2: would drop it be me, my mom and my dad's mom.
- 33:23Speaker 2: We would all go to Mount every Baptist church in
- 33:25Speaker 2: southeast San Diego. And it was some of the best
- 33:27Speaker 2: times of my life because that was the come up
- 33:30Speaker 2: and like literally I was just watching God move and
- 33:33Speaker 2: how God worked and it was just like just blessing
- 33:35Speaker 2: after blessing, Like I said. By the time my uh
- 33:39Speaker 2: what seventeenth birthday rolled around, I had to deal with
- 33:41Speaker 2: Will Smith and the first my first big check, I
- 33:44Speaker 2: ain't got the first thing I bought and Will told
- 33:46Speaker 2: me don't do it. But I bought a range Rover
- 33:47Speaker 2: because he had one, and like it's like Keenan had
- 33:50Speaker 2: a four Runner, Kill had an Expedition, like everybody had
- 33:53Speaker 2: these SUVs, and I had my mom's old broke down BMW.
- 33:56Speaker 2: I like, when I get my check, I'm gonna be
- 33:58Speaker 2: Ryan high, just like y'all.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Uh. And I bought a range over total. Dad messed
- 34:03Speaker 3: that up.
- 34:04Speaker 2: But the next chunk of money that I got, I.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Bought my mama house.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Wow. And I was like I told you. I was
- 34:11Speaker 2: like I told you, and the rest is history. Been
- 34:14Speaker 2: buying her houses since then. And she said good and
- 34:18Speaker 2: behind gates and some million dollars state somewhere.
- 34:21Speaker 1: So from there you end up, how did you get
- 34:24Speaker 1: the youngest writer?
- 34:25Speaker 2: Like when I was so so in that so why
- 34:28Speaker 2: I was the warm up. I would watched, you know,
- 34:29Speaker 2: Keenan on doing anything. Keenan literally became my big brother.
- 34:33Speaker 2: You know.
- 34:35Speaker 1: They said you used to like sleep on his couch.
- 34:37Speaker 2: I used to sleep on everybody couch, with Kells couch,
- 34:40Speaker 2: Jamie Fox's couch.
- 34:41Speaker 3: I used to sleep in my car.
- 34:44Speaker 5: Uh.
- 34:44Speaker 2: But Keenan was the one that let me move in,
- 34:47Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Everybody else was just like, yeah,
- 34:48Speaker 2: you could have a couch, you know what I mean.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Like it was it was, it was.
- 34:55Speaker 3: It was a tough tos.
- 34:56Speaker 2: I was a teenager. Yeah, Like it wasn't like, you know,
- 34:59Speaker 2: no pur suit of happiness. Yeah, it was just it
- 35:02Speaker 2: was the hustle.
- 35:03Speaker 1: I loved it.
- 35:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 35:04Speaker 3: We'd be in.
- 35:05Speaker 2: The comedy clubs till three, four in the morning and
- 35:08Speaker 2: we go to Jerry's Deli till five and so I
- 35:12Speaker 2: might go close my eyes for a hour or something.
- 35:14Speaker 2: I'll be playing basketball at the Wiveza by seven eight.
- 35:17Speaker 2: So it wasn't like I really I just my closes
- 35:20Speaker 2: in my trump, you know what I mean.
- 35:21Speaker 1: So you graduated high school earlier?
- 35:23Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, I graduated high school on sixteen because I
- 35:24Speaker 2: was water of the deal that my mom made with me.
- 35:26Speaker 2: She was like, you finished high school. I was like,
- 35:28Speaker 2: I'm gonna finish early. And I had work experience a job.
- 35:31Speaker 2: I had figured out how to get the stuff that
- 35:33Speaker 2: I was doing in LA as work experience. So I
- 35:36Speaker 2: was getting work experience credits and finished all of my
- 35:40Speaker 2: courses and I graduated high.
- 35:42Speaker 3: School a year early.
- 35:43Speaker 2: So just because I was like, all right, cool, then
- 35:46Speaker 2: now I can be up there full time and all
- 35:48Speaker 2: of these hours during the day where I'm sitting in
- 35:50Speaker 2: the class, I just moved to LA.
- 35:52Speaker 3: So I moved to LA when I was sixteen.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Okay, So you're Will Smith's situation. There's a pivot in there. Obviously,
- 35:58Speaker 1: what happens like to the next level.
- 36:02Speaker 2: I mean I rolle that for a while. I think
- 36:03Speaker 2: what happened with that I became known in Hollywood and
- 36:08Speaker 2: as like the next Will Smith or Will's protege. So
- 36:10Speaker 2: everybody started to taking notice, especially the people at Nickelodeon,
- 36:13Speaker 2: which I had already been working with, so they were like, Yo,
- 36:15Speaker 2: how do we let this kid get away from us?
- 36:17Speaker 3: So then that's.
- 36:18Speaker 2: When they gave me the deal for The Nick Cannon Show.
- 36:23Speaker 2: And youngest executive producer at the time, I think they
- 36:25Speaker 2: probably somebody. I think there's definitely a Zendaya or even
- 36:29Speaker 2: like Marseille Martin or something like that took it because
- 36:33Speaker 2: I think they were younger. But at the time I
- 36:35Speaker 2: was the youngest.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I don't think so, because I googled it right before
- 36:37Speaker 1: you came and you still the reigning champion. I tried,
- 36:41Speaker 1: I was like he still.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Yeah, eighteen or nineteen is when I was the younger
- 36:47Speaker 2: because I was really my showrunner. And the crazy thing
- 36:49Speaker 2: if you ever watched a Nick Cannon show, it's funny
- 36:51Speaker 2: because now I do the super dad content with my
- 36:53Speaker 2: kids and I make them watch episodes of The Nick
- 36:56Speaker 2: Cannon Show with me as a teenager and everything that
- 37:00Speaker 2: some people go viral for making millions of dollars on YouTube.
- 37:03Speaker 2: I was doing it in the nineties, so I was
- 37:05Speaker 2: doing the man on the Streets I was pulling up
- 37:08Speaker 2: to the zoo or to the mall, dressed up in
- 37:10Speaker 2: crazy stuff, pulling pranks on people. And they just gave
- 37:15Speaker 2: me a budget and said, go do what you want
- 37:17Speaker 2: to do, and I'll be in character. I'll be like
- 37:20Speaker 2: doing all type of I mean, if you've seen any
- 37:22Speaker 2: of this stuff. I would dress up like Latanya, like
- 37:25Speaker 2: some ghetto girl. I would dress up as Francis Spunkle,
- 37:28Speaker 2: some old school b boy. I had all of these
- 37:31Speaker 2: characters and I would just go out on the street
- 37:33Speaker 2: as its characters, and then I would go to kids
- 37:35Speaker 2: school and be principal for a day Bring Slime.
- 37:38Speaker 3: To the House. And it was a hit.
- 37:40Speaker 2: We did two seasons of it, and I probably could
- 37:43Speaker 2: have did it for a lot longer, but I just
- 37:45Speaker 2: started getting more and more popular on Nickelodeon, and I
- 37:49Speaker 2: created a bunch of like interstitial programming where we had
- 37:52Speaker 2: like thing called the Snick House where it's like a
- 37:54Speaker 2: party talk show type of vibe that hosted Snick Saturday
- 37:59Speaker 2: nights on NICK and everybody from like in Sync to Christina.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Aguilera and like. It was just like a dope concept.
- 38:05Speaker 2: And then from that I created Nick Records with Jive Records,
- 38:09Speaker 2: which is Nickelodeon's record label, and you know.
- 38:12Speaker 3: So then I was like, oh, I'm on to my
- 38:14Speaker 3: music vibe. And then the movies came, and.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Then the movies and then the first movie was Men.
- 38:19Speaker 2: And Black two. Will put Me in min and Black two. Okay,
- 38:22Speaker 2: but it was a cameo. But that was my first
- 38:24Speaker 2: movie that I ever did. And then the first movie
- 38:26Speaker 2: that I ever started, obviously was drum Line.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Which was like my favorite. I think everyone. I don't
- 38:31Speaker 1: know if everyone can agree, but you can watch drum
- 38:34Speaker 1: Line one hundred times easy movies, right, is that crazy?
- 38:38Speaker 1: Like you watch that movie every time you come on,
- 38:40Speaker 1: you will sit down and watch it.
- 38:41Speaker 3: I've only seen it once all the way through.
- 38:44Speaker 1: I've seen it at least one hundred times. Anytime it
- 38:46Speaker 1: comes home to me, I'm gonna watch TV.
- 38:48Speaker 2: But I can't sit there and watch myself for like
- 38:50Speaker 2: two hours.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Like I'll catch the scene or something like that.
- 38:54Speaker 1: But Drumline was amazing. Your acting and Drumline was amazing
- 39:01Speaker 1: and had Yeah. So when Drumline hits, yeah, like what
- 39:07Speaker 1: is yeah? Go ahead, I see you snacking. I can
- 39:10Speaker 1: tell you still eat this. So Drumline hits, it's a hit.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Everyone's talking, how you feeling, what's your pockets looking like?
- 39:18Speaker 1: And at this point is your career completely stable?
- 39:21Speaker 2: Yeah? And no, I don't think your correct money career
- 39:25Speaker 2: right now ain't completely stable. I think that's why I
- 39:27Speaker 2: hustle so much, because I feel like at some point.
- 39:29Speaker 3: They can pull the rug from up under me at
- 39:31Speaker 3: any time.
- 39:32Speaker 1: I love you feel like you did. But I tell
- 39:36Speaker 1: people this all the time because I do know you personally,
- 39:40Speaker 1: Yes that I don't know anyone on earth that works
- 39:45Speaker 1: harder than Nick. Nick. I've seen you sick, hungry, tired,
- 39:52Speaker 1: you know, usually in a circumstance where someone could be
- 39:54Speaker 1: an absolute asshole and you'd give them a pass and
- 39:57Speaker 1: you will be completely pulled. No, no attitude, no attitude,
- 40:02Speaker 1: no nothing, and just back to back three cities in
- 40:05Speaker 1: a day, probably even more since I've last seen. But
- 40:09Speaker 1: I've seen you push the limits like no other.
- 40:12Speaker 3: I think it's just in me, like when you think.
- 40:14Speaker 2: I think it's such a blessing and privilege to live
- 40:17Speaker 2: the life that I live and to wake up in.
- 40:20Speaker 2: My job is to be creative, so I got to
- 40:22Speaker 2: get as much of it as I possibly can, And
- 40:25Speaker 2: then it's the hustle in me, you know what I mean.
- 40:27Speaker 2: From my pops, my step pops, and everybody's just like, yo,
- 40:31Speaker 2: you gotta make something out of nothing. And I do
- 40:34Speaker 2: like it's successful as I've been.
- 40:37Speaker 3: I mean, if you think.
- 40:37Speaker 2: From the beginning of my career today, i made hundreds
- 40:41Speaker 2: of millions of dollars, but I'm always thinking like this
- 40:44Speaker 2: could be the last check.
- 40:45Speaker 1: So that's how you move for sure.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Yeah. So I'm like, I'm just always trying to get it.
- 40:49Speaker 2: I hope to one day get to that space where.
- 40:52Speaker 3: I'm like, all I had enough.
- 40:54Speaker 2: I'ma just but I'm not there yet, Like I'm trying
- 40:57Speaker 2: to figure out what the next play is. I'm jealous
- 40:59Speaker 2: all the YouTubers. I'm jealous of all the streamers. I'm like, yo,
- 41:03Speaker 2: how they getting I've been doing that? Like I'm the
- 41:06Speaker 2: little Richard of this. I'm the architect. But but I
- 41:11Speaker 2: love it though. It energizes me and the fact that
- 41:13Speaker 2: even now I get to see my kids want to
- 41:15Speaker 2: be a part of it and stuff.
- 41:16Speaker 3: So I'm having so much fun in that space.
- 41:25Speaker 1: In the stretch from and I tried to get I
- 41:27Speaker 1: didn't know if Valerie knew your assistant knew the answer
- 41:30Speaker 1: to this because I was like, Nick has had such
- 41:32Speaker 1: a long career. I was like, low key curious if
- 41:35Speaker 1: at any point during this long span of career, if
- 41:37Speaker 1: you actually went broke at any point?
- 41:40Speaker 2: Face, well, I went broke.
- 41:40Speaker 3: I went broke a couple of times.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Tell you tell me them, That's what I'm curious.
- 41:45Speaker 2: I went. So after my first deal with Will smith
- 41:49Speaker 2: Field somewhere was like one hundred and fifty to two
- 41:51Speaker 2: hundred thousand dollars, and I told you, I bought a
- 41:53Speaker 2: range Rover a bunch of other stuff, attempting to get
- 41:57Speaker 2: my mom a house, and thinking that they were going
- 42:00Speaker 2: to pick up the show had a six episode commitment
- 42:02Speaker 2: produced by Will smith I mean, Quincy Jones is at
- 42:05Speaker 2: my pilot shoot, same creators of Like the Damon Wayne showed,
- 42:12Speaker 2: same creators and created Jamie Fox. I was supposed to
- 42:14Speaker 2: come on right after the Jamie Fox Show on the WB.
- 42:17Speaker 2: So I'm spending money that I don't even have because
- 42:20Speaker 2: I'm thinking I got six episode commitment. I'm gonna be
- 42:21Speaker 2: getting one hundred and fifty episode.
- 42:24Speaker 3: Yeah, and they didn't pick up the show.
- 42:27Speaker 1: So after they told you they had the commitment, yeah, yeah,
- 42:29Speaker 1: the whole network.
- 42:32Speaker 2: And so me and Keenan we have got a house
- 42:34Speaker 2: in the Hollywood Hills. Now, like he was good, you know,
- 42:38Speaker 2: he got his money, and I'm like, I'm trying to
- 42:41Speaker 2: hold my end to the rent. And I ended up,
- 42:44Speaker 2: you know, having to move out of that place. I
- 42:46Speaker 2: couldn't pay pay the rent, lost my Range Rover, literally
- 42:49Speaker 2: started driving my mom's car again.
- 42:53Speaker 1: But she was able to keep her housing.
- 42:56Speaker 2: I hadn't bought her I was paying her rent.
- 42:58Speaker 3: I didn't bought her house.
- 43:00Speaker 2: I was hoping that you know, yeah, one hundred you know,
- 43:02Speaker 2: even I've bought the race bro what you know, almost
- 43:05Speaker 2: fifty sixty thousand dollars left, I can't buy a house.
- 43:08Speaker 2: But I was like, I figured down pay but again,
- 43:11Speaker 2: I'm spending money before I get it. I'm thinking I'm
- 43:13Speaker 2: about to be making millions of dollars. And Will Smith
- 43:17Speaker 2: everybody warned me to not do all that stuff and
- 43:20Speaker 2: invest wise and listen. So I was literally back sleeping
- 43:23Speaker 2: on people's couches again, driving back and forth this San
- 43:27Speaker 2: Diego went from a range Rover to a cougar.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Literally, So that's your first time? Was there another time
- 43:33Speaker 1: after that?
- 43:34Speaker 2: H Yeah, because even though I had. There was some
- 43:36Speaker 2: lawsuits in there too that people, because they thought I
- 43:38Speaker 2: was blowing up, wanted to assume me and all that stuff.
- 43:40Speaker 3: So lawsuits will always make you go broke.
- 43:43Speaker 1: And then I think I've actually personally witnessed to go
- 43:46Speaker 1: through a yeah loss.
- 43:48Speaker 2: It's crazy because you got to they're suing you for
- 43:50Speaker 2: a certain amount of money, and then to help you
- 43:53Speaker 2: not lose that case, you got to pay lawyers, probably
- 43:55Speaker 2: the same amount of money you getting sued for Jesus so,
- 43:58Speaker 2: and then at some point you realize that, all right,
- 44:00Speaker 2: well I'd rather just settle so I can stop paying
- 44:03Speaker 2: you and hopefully we get into a number that's not
- 44:05Speaker 2: as astronomical as they're asking for it, but like something
- 44:08Speaker 2: I can afford. So every time, like lawsuits, whether legitimate
- 44:12Speaker 2: or not, can make a person go broke just because
- 44:15Speaker 2: you go broke trying to defend yourself.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Even if you're in the right.
- 44:18Speaker 2: So I think the next time, because I learned great
- 44:21Speaker 2: lessons that first.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Time, I was gonna say, you're very lucky you learned
- 44:25Speaker 1: it on that on that first go round.
- 44:27Speaker 2: It gets scary every once in a while, people mismanaging
- 44:31Speaker 2: your money. But I said, I was a hustler, so
- 44:35Speaker 2: it gets scary, but I never went broke to tighten
- 44:39Speaker 2: my belt up a couple of times. You know, divorce
- 44:43Speaker 2: is never fun, you know what I mean, because that's
- 44:46Speaker 2: the whole time and the same thing. You're dealing with
- 44:48Speaker 2: the legal system and you know, even living at the
- 44:51Speaker 2: high level of life that you know, I was living
- 44:54Speaker 2: with my ex wife and then not being able to
- 44:58Speaker 2: continue that lifestyle because my finances is tied up in
- 45:02Speaker 2: so many other things.
- 45:04Speaker 3: Uh, that was a little scary.
- 45:05Speaker 2: I ain't go broke, but uh that actually created a
- 45:08Speaker 2: lot of stability for me after my through my marriage.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Cause then that was like the first that was probably
- 45:13Speaker 2: no no cause I I did buy like I said,
- 45:16Speaker 2: I bought a house. I did buy myself a house
- 45:19Speaker 2: and lost that house.
- 45:21Speaker 3: Uh that in like ninety.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Nine, Okay, between ninety before. Between ninety nine up until
- 45:27Speaker 2: drum line was a very shaky time for me.
- 45:30Speaker 3: So I lost the house that I I bought.
- 45:32Speaker 2: But then once Drumline came and everything started coming after that,
- 45:35Speaker 2: I start getting back to the bag and it's been pretty.
- 45:41Speaker 1: So you are still pretty young when all that was
- 45:42Speaker 1: going on.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Yeah, so early twenties, I I was al like I
- 45:45Speaker 2: said the next time that it got scary for me,
- 45:48Speaker 2: and but I ended up purchasing my own home and
- 45:51Speaker 2: stuff like. That was after marriage, and you know, being
- 45:54Speaker 2: in my thirties at that time, it's like, alright, now
- 45:56Speaker 2: I gotta figure this out.
- 45:57Speaker 3: I got kids, I gotta move differently.
- 45:59Speaker 2: So and then since then, I mean, now my fears.
- 46:02Speaker 2: I got so many kids. I want to make sure
- 46:04Speaker 2: that they can actually be good for the rest of
- 46:07Speaker 2: their lives.
- 46:08Speaker 3: You know, most people got to worry about two or
- 46:09Speaker 3: three kids. I got to worry about twelve. So I
- 46:12Speaker 3: want to make sure that.
- 46:13Speaker 2: You know, it's because you know, life is challenging, so
- 46:16Speaker 2: I want to make sure at least they don't have
- 46:18Speaker 2: to worry about anything financially for the rest of that lives.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I like that because whenever I see like a billionaire
- 46:23Speaker 1: and they're like, I'm going to make sure my kids suffers.
- 46:26Speaker 2: I'm going to give all.
- 46:26Speaker 1: My money to all the nonprofits. Crazy, that's hard to
- 46:30Speaker 1: give it all the way to the non profit.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to do what Quincy Jones did. He
- 46:34Speaker 2: has always been one of my mentors, and I don't
- 46:37Speaker 2: know the exact amount, but obviously my man was almost
- 46:39Speaker 2: a billionaire and he gave all his money to I
- 46:41Speaker 2: think he had about ten kids.
- 46:43Speaker 3: So everybody, everybody is sitting good.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's honestly, why.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Sure it out? You know what I mean. But like
- 46:50Speaker 2: you know, I'm a big advocate for philanthropy and I
- 46:53Speaker 2: do a lot of charitable efforts. But you know, it's
- 46:56Speaker 2: about lineage. Yeah, not legacy. Let people use the word
- 46:59Speaker 2: legac see legacy is tapped into ego and narcissism. But
- 47:03Speaker 2: lineage is something this is this is your family, you know,
- 47:07Speaker 2: and you want to make sure and that's my goal
- 47:09Speaker 2: to me, like having so many children, the goal is
- 47:15Speaker 2: to be able to provide for them in a way
- 47:17Speaker 2: whatever they want to do in life.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Disguise the limit.
- 47:20Speaker 5: You know, if you want to be a doctor, I
- 47:22Speaker 5: can help you get to the best medical school. If
- 47:24Speaker 5: you want to be an athlete, I can get you
- 47:25Speaker 5: to the best trainers. You want to be a chef,
- 47:27Speaker 5: I could get you to the best culinary school. And
- 47:30Speaker 5: it's not about the financial things about me supporting your dreams.
- 47:33Speaker 5: So I'm literally focused on my kids and the fact
- 47:35Speaker 5: that I have the means and the you know wherewithal
- 47:38Speaker 5: the big shore that I could put them in positions
- 47:40Speaker 5: to then have the best education in whatever it is
- 47:43Speaker 5: that they want to pursue. They can have the best health,
- 47:46Speaker 5: they could have the best.
- 47:47Speaker 3: Chance at life.
- 47:48Speaker 2: Let's do it. And that's why I work so hard.
- 47:50Speaker 2: I work so hard so that my kids could have
- 47:52Speaker 2: the best so that their life is I like that.
- 47:55Speaker 1: So I knew you pre kid. I met you when
- 47:57Speaker 1: I was twenty one. I thank you were twenty.
- 47:59Speaker 3: Five, so impressed with all that you were doing.
- 48:03Speaker 2: I know you were working with the youth, and you
- 48:07Speaker 2: had your own company. She had her own she was
- 48:10Speaker 2: a journalist and had her own magazine. Yes, And I
- 48:12Speaker 2: thought that was so cool, so much so that I
- 48:14Speaker 2: was like I got to be a part of this.
- 48:16Speaker 1: Yes, but you it was funny because we're like so
- 48:19Speaker 1: close in age. I'm literally four years younger than you.
- 48:22Speaker 1: So you had just gotten your deal with willing Out.
- 48:25Speaker 1: I think you were in season one or season two
- 48:27Speaker 1: when you and I actually ended.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Up working downtown.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Yeah, you were in off Yeah, and you were cool.
- 48:35Speaker 1: You were really nice to the kids. They were nervous
- 48:37Speaker 1: as hell.
- 48:38Speaker 2: And Nick, you know, it's such an amazing concept. She
- 48:41Speaker 2: created a magazine for students by students, so it's like THEO.
- 48:50Speaker 3: It was such a brilliant idea lift things up that
- 48:54Speaker 3: it was amazing. It's like a newspaper school newspaper.
- 48:59Speaker 2: On steroids, like and you had all of the celebrities
- 49:02Speaker 2: on the cover, so it was like literally for publicists,
- 49:04Speaker 2: it was a good look to have your kid or
- 49:07Speaker 2: your client on celebrity high and I just wanted to
- 49:12Speaker 2: kind of amplify whatever I could do to turn it up.
- 49:15Speaker 3: But it was a brilliant.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Concept you did.
- 49:18Speaker 1: But now take me back to your original pitch of
- 49:23Speaker 1: wild'n Out, because that to me was like your second
- 49:25Speaker 1: go round at least from Afar, right, your second real
- 49:29Speaker 1: big go round, just doing all you.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Nobody believed in wilding Out at the beginning because everybody
- 49:34Speaker 2: wanted me to focus on being a movie star, which is.
- 49:38Speaker 3: A great idea, you know what I mean.
- 49:40Speaker 2: And at the top back then, they only wanted you
- 49:43Speaker 2: to be one thing. And that was why I looked
- 49:44Speaker 2: up to Will Smith so much because he did it all.
- 49:46Speaker 2: But they were like, there's only one him, you can't
- 49:48Speaker 2: you need. Let's go become a movie star and then
- 49:51Speaker 2: you can focus on music and TV. And I've been
- 49:55Speaker 2: doing a bunch of stuff with MTV, like the guest
- 49:58Speaker 2: hosting on TRL and their different game shows, and they
- 50:01Speaker 2: loved me.
- 50:02Speaker 3: So they gave me a deal.
- 50:03Speaker 2: And they were like, that's when Ashton was doing punk
- 50:05Speaker 2: and it's like, you want to do a show like this.
- 50:06Speaker 2: I was like, Nah, not really, I don't do a
- 50:08Speaker 2: show with my friends, you know, and like mixing hip
- 50:11Speaker 2: hop and comedy and improv talking shit. And they were like,
- 50:14Speaker 2: we don't understand what you're saying we should do like
- 50:16Speaker 2: a game show or punk. And I was like, nah,
- 50:18Speaker 2: I'm telling you, this is it. So I took my
- 50:20Speaker 2: own money and I rented out of comedy club on
- 50:23Speaker 2: Pico called the Comedy Union and got my friends together.
- 50:27Speaker 2: You know, that was hustling and trying to figure it out.
- 50:29Speaker 2: People that was trying to make a name for themselves
- 50:31Speaker 2: like Kevin Hart, you know, Cat Williams and a bunch
- 50:37Speaker 2: of people that nobody knew. Nobody knew Cat was called
- 50:41Speaker 2: Cat and the Hat back then. Yeah, and yeah, everybody came.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Chris Spencer was like one of the dopest writers and
- 50:50Speaker 2: producers and directors in.
- 50:52Speaker 3: The game right now.
- 50:52Speaker 2: He he helped We just got a bunch of people
- 50:55Speaker 2: together and said, yeah, we're just gonna do it. And
- 50:56Speaker 2: I was inspired by stuff that had come before me,
- 50:59Speaker 2: like Death Comedy Yeah, Uptown Comedy Club.
- 51:02Speaker 3: Whose line is it anyway?
- 51:03Speaker 2: And I was like, yo, our generation needs something like that,
- 51:06Speaker 2: and that's what we created.
- 51:09Speaker 1: But you were the one financing it.
- 51:11Speaker 3: So then when that once I showed yeah, once I
- 51:13Speaker 3: showed them what I shot, they were like, we love it.
- 51:16Speaker 2: And I was like, good because I own it. And
- 51:20Speaker 2: they had to pay, like they weigh you know what
- 51:22Speaker 2: I mean. And we did a great deal and still
- 51:24Speaker 2: to this day.
- 51:25Speaker 1: And now when you first did your deal, was it
- 51:27Speaker 1: like a licensing partnering deal?
- 51:28Speaker 2: It was it. I mean, I'm be honest. Back then
- 51:30Speaker 2: I didn't even understand it. But the fact that I
- 51:32Speaker 2: owned out, I owned a wild in our name. And
- 51:35Speaker 2: so eventually later on, once it became even more successful, Uh,
- 51:39Speaker 2: they came back to me and was like, yo, we
- 51:41Speaker 2: we need.
- 51:42Speaker 3: A piece of that.
- 51:43Speaker 2: The shareholders see we went in, so you know, how
- 51:46Speaker 2: can we write you a very large check so that
- 51:48Speaker 2: we can officially be partners so it can be part
- 51:51Speaker 2: of you know, the paramount system. So of course I
- 51:54Speaker 2: appliged you know, every everything got a price, tet, everything
- 51:58Speaker 2: has a price, but I'll never relinquished ownership.
- 52:01Speaker 1: And that's great. So now around this period, you're doing
- 52:04Speaker 1: really well. You're doing extremely well with while I'm out,
- 52:07Speaker 1: You're well known, you're helping me out. By the way,
- 52:10Speaker 1: I can't even tell you just a short quick story.
- 52:14Speaker 1: I couldn't afford the rent on my office, and I
- 52:17Speaker 1: remember telling Nile like, and now I can't even pay
- 52:21Speaker 1: the phone bill on this office anymore. And I can't
- 52:25Speaker 1: even afford the rent. And I was like, asked Nick,
- 52:26Speaker 1: if you can move in? And what you don't know
- 52:29Speaker 1: is uh, during or someone now has someone had said
- 52:32Speaker 1: you can move in. And so whenever Nick would pull
- 52:35Speaker 1: up to the studio, I didn't know if Nick knew
- 52:36Speaker 1: I had moved in. So you come in and I
- 52:39Speaker 1: like hide somewhere in the corner, and I think one
- 52:41Speaker 1: day you were like, what's up, and I was just like,
- 52:44Speaker 1: I don't know if he knows that I worked out
- 52:46Speaker 1: It was good, But I remember you telling me like, well,
- 52:50Speaker 1: you don't say I was like, I'm not really here.
- 52:58Speaker 2: But I was definitely a big supporter and fan of
- 53:02Speaker 2: your whole movement.
- 53:03Speaker 1: But during that ride, we get through a little bit
- 53:06Speaker 1: of turbulence. So you we have success with willing out.
- 53:10Speaker 1: You have a g T which is paying you a
- 53:12Speaker 1: crazy amount. I knew they were paying you an insane
- 53:15Speaker 1: amount because you always had dressers and people coming in.
- 53:18Speaker 2: The number one show on television.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Yes, and then you release your comedy special.
- 53:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I not three comedy specials, but the last one
- 53:26Speaker 2: is doing that pissed them off?
- 53:28Speaker 1: Yes, yes, and the last one pissed them off. The
- 53:32Speaker 1: water gets choppy. I want to know the feelings, the
- 53:35Speaker 1: vibes that everything.
- 53:36Speaker 2: I was confident. I mean, that's one thing. I'm overly
- 53:39Speaker 2: confident since you know I've been labeled a narcissist and
- 53:44Speaker 2: how much I believe and love myself. So I told him,
- 53:49Speaker 2: they take their job and stick it where they need
- 53:53Speaker 2: to stick it.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Now, I know Goldman.
- 53:57Speaker 2: Didn't. No of my team, my managers. They thought I
- 53:59Speaker 2: was crazy. They thought I was having a mental breakdown.
- 54:01Speaker 2: They thought I shouldn't you know, I should. People literally
- 54:06Speaker 2: from Howard Stern CEOs or big giant companies like Man,
- 54:10Speaker 2: opportunities like this don't come around. You're one of the
- 54:13Speaker 2: top hosts in television. You're going to ruin everything and
- 54:17Speaker 2: just over just your a joke and your freedom of speech.
- 54:20Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, And I learned from you know,
- 54:23Speaker 2: big bros. And examples like Dave Chappelle and people I've
- 54:27Speaker 2: watched personally go through stuff, and I'm like, this is
- 54:31Speaker 2: my opportunity to stand firm in my beliefs.
- 54:34Speaker 3: And I quit AGT.
- 54:36Speaker 1: Now AGT at the time was it paying you more
- 54:39Speaker 1: than willing out at the time.
- 54:40Speaker 2: Yeah, at that time, saying as network television, I don't
- 54:43Speaker 2: I'm still but even then I was one of the
- 54:47Speaker 2: highest paid television.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Hosts you were. But now I remember watching you go
- 54:52Speaker 1: through that, thinking I never really get along with Goman
- 54:56Speaker 1: by the way. We made up by the way, so
- 54:57Speaker 1: you know we're friends now we're puddies. But I remember thinking,
- 55:02Speaker 1: like Goman's gonna have like a stroke watching this deal,
- 55:05Speaker 1: this whole situation. Have he gonna turn down crazy amount
- 55:08Speaker 1: of money or whatever on some I'm gonna believe in
- 55:12Speaker 1: myself and freedom of speech. And I remember thinking, oh, okay, see,
- 55:17Speaker 1: you know, and it.
- 55:18Speaker 2: Was so much into that because it was like me
- 55:21Speaker 2: being a black man in Hollywood, me being young in Hollywood, like,
- 55:25Speaker 2: so it was a lot of things. So I ended
- 55:27Speaker 2: up like part ways with a lot of people firing
- 55:30Speaker 2: individuals because I felt like they didn't believe in me.
- 55:33Speaker 2: Because everybody was thinking, like you, you're lucky, you should
- 55:37Speaker 2: you should be grateful.
- 55:38Speaker 3: That you have this job.
- 55:40Speaker 2: There's you know, we normally don't let guys like you
- 55:43Speaker 2: in here, like fuck you. Like That's like I got
- 55:47Speaker 2: offended by people. Really, they was just probably looking out
- 55:49Speaker 2: for me, but they were like, yo, you're you're gonna
- 55:54Speaker 2: ruin your career when I was like, well, I'll show you.
- 55:57Speaker 3: This job doesn't make me.
- 55:58Speaker 2: I'm gonna go make a bigger and better show.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, working with you personally, I think I saw
- 56:04Speaker 1: a lot of that behind the scenes. But but what
- 56:08Speaker 1: I also was able to see was your elevator. Elevator
- 56:11Speaker 1: pitch game was remarkable. I always tell people, like, when
- 56:14Speaker 1: you see a deal, Nick did it from the beginning,
- 56:17Speaker 1: the middle, and the end, and he came up with
- 56:19Speaker 1: it and he sold it himself. I've heard stories about
- 56:22Speaker 1: you writing movies, pitching it and getting a deal and
- 56:25Speaker 1: then going home.
- 56:31Speaker 2: I got the script, I was working on it, have
- 56:34Speaker 2: it to you next week. Now with chat GPT, you
- 56:38Speaker 2: can actually really do that Back then, I was literally
- 56:41Speaker 2: write up all night writing scripts at something I had
- 56:44Speaker 2: already sold.
- 56:44Speaker 1: Dude, I've been I talked to your dad. We're both
- 56:47Speaker 1: heavily into AI and chat GPT. I've been joking. Chat
- 56:50Speaker 1: GPT is like the word level of where AI is. Now.
- 56:54Speaker 1: There's other platforms that were like annihilated. Yeah, they literally
- 56:58Speaker 1: like downput your brain and you say, write the script
- 57:02Speaker 1: from this perspective and these interviews and done done. It's crazy.
- 57:06Speaker 1: What's your favorite program right now? It's CenTra. Now. When
- 57:10Speaker 1: I first got Central, Yeah, your dad was the one
- 57:14Speaker 1: that showed me a couple of monsts from it. I
- 57:15Speaker 1: was like, can't, But now I kind of understand the concept.
- 57:19Speaker 1: There's in video that I did a little in video
- 57:21Speaker 1: was good, but I want to do a whole compilation
- 57:24Speaker 1: of what based on what. Like I have a password
- 57:27Speaker 1: sheet that I gave to like my family and friends,
- 57:30Speaker 1: and it says like this is what this app is
- 57:32Speaker 1: specifically good for, and so if you use all of
- 57:35Speaker 1: them together, it's heaven. Like I don't want to be graphic,
- 57:39Speaker 1: but like I would, I would have sex with AIM.
- 57:41Speaker 2: So they're making that possible very soon.
- 57:47Speaker 1: I'm saying like I'm that and that's all I talk about. So,
- 57:52Speaker 1: but I want to take it back to this error
- 57:55Speaker 1: because there's a couple of scary patches where I feel
- 57:57Speaker 1: like in my spirit I was like praying for you.
- 58:00Speaker 1: There was one part where I even sent you an email.
- 58:02Speaker 1: I looked in my emails and I read that email
- 58:04Speaker 1: back and I.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Was like, did I say that? It was probably? So
- 58:09Speaker 2: there was so much stuff that I seen that I
- 58:11Speaker 2: might have like, especially because you responded.
- 58:13Speaker 1: You responded and you were very nice, and I was like,
- 58:15Speaker 1: why house.
- 58:17Speaker 2: But there was a lot of love out there. And
- 58:19Speaker 2: I appreciated when people when people saw that I was
- 58:21Speaker 2: going through stuff, because sometimes I was going through stuff
- 58:23Speaker 2: health wise and then sometimes I was going through some
- 58:25Speaker 2: business wise. But like it's all eyes on me. So
- 58:28Speaker 2: it's like magnified from the media, the people. They just
- 58:32Speaker 2: be in my business. But people know like, oh shit,
- 58:35Speaker 2: he going through something right now.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's hard because you you embody strength. So
- 58:40Speaker 1: during this period you say goodbye to a GT. Now
- 58:43Speaker 1: this is the remarkable comeback that I loved. You end
- 58:47Speaker 1: up all mass mass masked singer, which ends up being
- 58:52Speaker 1: for one again, bigger than A bigger than AGT again, like.
- 58:57Speaker 2: So we everything they said I could do, you got.
- 59:01Speaker 1: It was that moment, like.
- 59:03Speaker 2: Absolutely, I mean that was the plan. I was like
- 59:06Speaker 2: and again because A G T Was on Fox, My
- 59:10Speaker 2: bad A G T Was on NBC and that singer's
- 59:13Speaker 2: on Fox, so I literally was the competition and went
- 59:18Speaker 2: and just you know, show them where they messed up exactly.
- 59:23Speaker 2: And it was like, you know, people like that's never
- 59:26Speaker 2: been done before to where somebody literally tells somebody to
- 59:31Speaker 2: go stick it where the sun don't shine. And then
- 59:34Speaker 2: do you think they could cancel you or you know,
- 59:36Speaker 2: get rid of you and go across the street and
- 59:39Speaker 2: make an even bigger show.
- 59:40Speaker 1: Yeah, well you showed them. But now the ultimate life
- 59:51Speaker 1: check happens, which is when I think it was like
- 59:54Speaker 1: right before the pandemic or going was a middle pandemic.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Life check, but I felt like it was a check
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: from outside looking at people was worried.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: I was worried. That's my little vulgar email of I'm
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: doing sent Jamaican. So I'm going to say this. I'm
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: going to say this delicately, but I feel like my
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: little brother, you know, Ego, because we had a little past,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: because we're we are Jewish, say this, but you got
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: gin checked by the juice kind, Well, how do you
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: want to worry?
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: It feel like, I mean, I don't have to be
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: delicate because I feel it was such a growing experience
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: for me.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: That I learned that.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: Even if you're not intentionally trying to hurt someone or
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: a community, when you have a powerful voice, people can
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: get scared of it if it's not having if it's
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: not shedding a light, a positive light. And I always
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: want to be responsible, and Minister Fairkinn was one of
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: the people that actually shared this with me, is like,
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: if you don't speak truth, you don't really have power.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: You don't want to speak anything that's not the truth.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: So if there's something that you have said that isn't
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: the truth, and someone can challenge you and say this
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: isn't true, then now I'll never have to say that again.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: But if it's the truth, stand firm on it. And
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: that was the lesson that I learned. That was what
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: I was attempting to project, But it was so much
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: going on that it felt like ooh, he apologized, ooh
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: he not going to like It became about what everyone
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: else thought opposed to what the actual lesson was and
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: that's even why out of that process I created a
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: platform called not cancel Culture, but counsel Culture, because that's
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: what we all should be seeking wise counsel.
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: To where we're.
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: All held accountable for the things that we do and say.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: But it has to be displayed in a way that
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: where you can look to others, to other communities to
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: attempt to understand one another and get to the truth.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: That's why when you look at situations like aparth TID,
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: they had truth and reconciliation. That was a thing where
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: once we get the truth, then now we can reconcile
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: or even in a Jewish community as well as in
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: our community. There is a process of atonement in repentance
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: to where there's steps to it, but the first step
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: is acknowledging and saying, look, we have an issue, and
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: then apologizing to where you are wrong, and then taking
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: that accountability after the apology, and then now offering up
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: what the two of you can do together. And that's
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: really how that's the process of atonement. And I got
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: a chance to do that live and living.
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: Color in front of the world.
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: Yeah you did, and it's maybe I.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: Made more money that year than I had ever.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Maybe for twenty twenty, I made more relationships and friendships
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: with you know now you know myself and the Sea
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: of the ad L So I saw talking my man Jonathan,
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: like we literally are not only great friends, but we
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: have a podcast together and we get to talk in
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: real time about things that are going on in the world,
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: you know, from our various communities, and it's a beautiful thing,
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Our kids hang out together
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: and you know it. But it was a learning process
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: for me. But at no point was I ever scared
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: or felt threatened. I was more than anything. I was
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: like I wanted to represent who I was and who
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: my character because I felt like people were assassinating my
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: character in so many ways.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: And I feel like that's what's going on in the
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: world right now.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: There's so many figures that you know, in the sixties
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: and civil rights and before all the way Jim Crow
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: to slavery, it was a regular thing for us to
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: be assassinated in public.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: Now instead of physical.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: Assassinations, it's character assassinations. And they want to show that
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: they can get rid of you or assassinate you, tarnish
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: your name all that you've built to show like hey
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: know your place, and they tried to assassinate my character
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: and they couldn't do it.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't at the time. I didn't see anything
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: that you had said that was bad. So maybe maybe
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: I have the media to go back and maybe, but
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: I didn't see.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Anything from the perspective like we you didn't see anything
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: because you know me and you know how it is.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: But there were definitely things out there that they could
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: take an interview, cut it one way, put it in
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: a perspective, and as I said, the media.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Is so that's kind of what they ran on.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: It's manipulated entertainment design or designed to influence all and
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: that's what it does.
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: So if one group wants to.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Say, you know, you're anti Semite, they can take this
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: conversation and say, see, you know. Or but if somebody
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: wants to say, you know that I'm racist towards this
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: group or that, like, you can take any interview, any
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: sound bite, especially today, and manipulated and wait for it
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: to say whatever you wanted to say and have my perspective.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: So we got to be responsible for what we say.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: We got to stand firm on the truths that we know.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: But then at the same time, if someone is offended,
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: if you've hurt somebody, do this for my kids all
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: the time, I said, one of the greatest lessons through
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: this process.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: Literally saw my kids outside.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: Throwing rocks and somebody got hit with a rock, and
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: then my kids repeating with me, like, Dad, I didn't
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: need to hit them with the rock. I was like,
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: but you still hit someone with a rock. You have
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: to apologize, even if I know you didn't need to
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: do it. But the right thing to do is you
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: hurt someone, and then we'll get to why you were
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: throwing rocks later and if what they mean it, or
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: let's figure out let's do something different than throwing rocks,
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: or throw them in the direction where no one can
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: get hit. But the first thing you must do is apologize.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: And through that, as a father, that's the lesson that
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: I had to step back and say, you know what,
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: I have no problem apologize. I'm man enough and humble
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: enough to Apoli Joe to anybody that I've hurt or offended.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: And you know that that allowed me to grow so
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: much because I was that guy who I ain't saying sorry, No,
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: I stand for this, this and this ain't nobody gonna
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: make me do nothing, But I'm my characters. I never
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: want to hurt anybody. I always want to be a light.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: I always want to be on the highest frequency. I
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: always want to be somebody that you know, can bring
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: people closer together and build platforms and give opportunities. And
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: you know, I think people see that from my characters.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: I'm never I'm never going to do everything perfect or
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: the right way, but I'm always going to have the
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: right intentions and integrity is super important.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: To me now. But at the time, with the whole
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: situation with wild'n Out, there had been some inner inner
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: battles because you had so many people on payroll. Yeah,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: they affected a lot of people.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: I went through so many ups and downs. I went like,
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: fuck this, I'm walking away. I don't want none of this.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Like I'm done, y'all can have it to wait, No,
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: that's mine, give me that. I'm like, I do it
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: on my own. Where like like it was, it was
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: so much going on, But like I was always thinking
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: about you know, how many you know, you have a
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: lot of people, and you.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: Know people they were scared.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: So I was never worried, obviously, but I was like, man,
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: I don't want this thing to go away. So you know,
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: the hundreds of people that e off of this no
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: longer get to so again, it was a humbling process.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: I'd say it was a character kaleidoscope for me.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: I was able to see everyone's true colors in real time.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: And some people rocked with me, some people didn't.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: Some relationships are stronger because of it, some are non
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: existent because of it.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Well, now we take you to now where I turn on? Well,
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: I want to say turn on. I go on social media.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: You're all over social media. But one of the things
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: now that I'm all the way caught up is I
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: see you do counsel culture. I see you do class
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Cannon's class. But the thing that makes me kind of
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: oh's And I don't know how you do it because
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: I get defensive if someone like said something. I'm one
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: of those people that get defense. I'm working on it.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: I'm just like me deep and still working on it.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: But sometimes people will say stuff to you, at least
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: in clips. From what I've seen, culture his very very
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: well like, I don't even know why he opens himself
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: up to this.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: I just I think, first of all, because council culture.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Because I'm in therapy constantly. I go to therapy a
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: few times a weekend a lot of times. I have
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: personal relationships with the therapists that are on that show.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: And if anyone's ever been in therapy, you're just supposed
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: to be open, honest, and vulnerable to a point where
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: even if you're completely wrong, like even with my you know,
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: narcissistic personality, uh diagnosis, whether I believe it or not,
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: if this is what a doctor said I have, I
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: have no problem talking about it with the doctor and expressing.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: And you know, I've had many Like some doctors say, well,
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: I don't believe that. I think you're just this, this
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: and this, or oh I think you know you have it,
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: But so does the majority of the people in your industry.
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: They just don't never been diagnosed or don't talk about it.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: Like so the fact that I'm living my life openly
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: for others to embrace because it is all about community
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: and council and you know, culture just means it's where
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: we cultivate, it's where we grow. So I'm sacrificing my line.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: You definitely sacrifice us.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: I sit there because I say things and I feel
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: ways that there's a lot of other men that out there.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Men don't have a space to actually be vulnerable and
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: ask tough questions and literally challenge themselves. And I live.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: My life out in public anyway.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: People have so many opinions about me anyway, So if
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: anything one thing to say, I'm not highing nothing, I'm
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: not lying. Yeah, you see the work happening in real time. Uh.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: And the goal is to just be you know, the
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: best human being or the best spirit having a human
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: experience as I can, well I do.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: I will commend you on the like owning being on
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: narcissists because usually if you ever break up with someone,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: the first thing they gonna say you was a narcissist.
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: And you I think everybody has a level of it.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: And when you get the test, it takes hours to
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: do and it's over days and all that stuff. But
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: you realize there's a spectrum like within anything, and there's
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: certain things that you know when you think about it, obviously,
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: like you.
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: Know, I'm not a Donald Trump level narcissists.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: There's a I don't want to put my name on
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: every building and have rage and you know I'm not
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: empathetic to you know, whole community are non empathetic to
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: whole communities. But there's things that when you want to
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: be the best, when you think you're the best, when
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: you believe in yourself, when you believe you have the
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: ability to do something that no one else says, and
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: especially in business, that's great. In a personal relationship, as
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: a father, that's not good. And so even as a father,
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: I've said, all right, well, I'm learning what how how
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: to get rid of some of those narcissistic tendencies when
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: parenting because a lot of people, like I'll give you example,
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: something that a lot of a narcissistic thing that a
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: lot of parents do that they don't know that they do.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: That I've learned is that you think your children are
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: an extension of you. That's a narcissistic trait that like
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: I made you, you gotta do what and if you
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: don't agree or do what I said or what I
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: taught you, I'm disowning you or I'm upset with you.
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: That's what a narcissist does.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: And you think that's good parenting, But no, your children
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: aren't an extension. You're actually an extension of your children
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: if you look at it the way, and they're their
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: own individuals. So that's why I stop using terms like legacy,
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: because a legacy is something that you do and build.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: Your children are your lineage and they go and do whatever,
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: but you didn't. Oh, I'm making a legacy like, No,
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: my legacy shouldn't be my children. Like we are blessed
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: to take stewardship over for probably only eighteen years of
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: an independent spirit that will go on and be whoever
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: they are.
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: That they're not yours in that stense.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: You are here to train them and operate, you know,
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: a safe space and provide for them for God, but
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: they're not yours in that sense that they have to
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: do everything you say. Now obviously discipline and all that stuff.
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: You keep them safe.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: But if your child wants to be this, or identifies
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: as this, or grows up to have.
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: This career, that's what they're supposed to do. But and
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: I'm learning this in real time.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Where as much as I want my son to be this,
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: I want my daughter to do this, I just gotta
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: love them regardless of you know what. I can't project
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: my beliefs onto them, and the only thing I could
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: do is be the best example that I can be,
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: and hopefully they want to be like me, but I
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: can't force them to be an extension of me. So
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: that's that's stuff I learn in therapy. Because you think
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: you're sposed to be like, oh, no, I'm gonna make
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: sure that you do this, and I'm gonna give you this.
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: You better do this because I said so, Like I.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: Just be like, I want you to be a I
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: say this, but I get correct, I'll be like I
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: want her to be the best version of me, or
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: like stronger than me, better than me, like ten times
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: better than who I was and.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: Will be because your gift. But when you start, when
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: you start saying, when you start projecting your trauma onto
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: your child, and that's when Now, now that feels like pressure,
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: you know what I mean, opposed to be like, you
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: don't have to be anything like me, you I just
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: want you to be the best version of yourself. Yeah,
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: And that's you know, but you know we're not preaching.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: Were eating my book?
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: And then what made you end up going to get
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: start getting getting counseling.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: And I mean started in the church.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: I mean we always look to the past or different
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: elements of Christianity too. You know, you seek wise counsel
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: uh and whether it's relationships. I probably say started with relationships.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: Then I started working in the prison systems. You know,
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: where do you do group therapy? And I watched a
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: lot of psychologists and professors and stuff come in and
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: I watched group therapy and that's kind of how like
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: AA meetings.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: And I was like, I found myself.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: I was working as a philanthropic process and I was
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: getting more out of it than you know, some of
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: the men and women that were incarcerated. I was like, Wow,
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: this talking things out and sharing like this works. And
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: so seeing all that, you know, started doing personal therapy
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: every week, and like I said, I've been in couples
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: therapy a time from.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: Past relationships, and I just grew to love it.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Groued to love like being open, being honest, and just
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: hopefully being a beacon and a conduit for mental wellness.
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: And because it's needed right now more than ever.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: So you know, shouts out to all the other individuals
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: who see it as well. You know, there's a lot
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: of entertainers that artists that are moving into that space
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: of mental wellness, and it's just it. Before this started,
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: it really wasn't something specifically black men spoke about or
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: even knew about.
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: So the fact that now we can have platforms, we
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: can do it openly. I mean, you see it all
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: all across.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: Line, and I see it a lot now. I see
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: rappers just rapping about being a man in relationships. I'm like, now,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: isn't that art as a man?
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: We feel too?
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: I see.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: I literally was scrolling like three in the morning the
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: other day. I saw some rapper and all his songs
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: was like about like, I guess feelings, and I was
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: just like, you guys have a lot of feelings, a
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: lot of frustrating what to do.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: With it now too, because before we didn't, we bottled
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: it up and then it turned into other things that
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: weren't so healthy. But now you know, it's like, you know,
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: I rather I'd rather meditate than medicate, you know what
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: I mean.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: I see you doing that a lot of meditation and
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: all that.
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I've always done it, but it's like.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: You'll be doing it on the camera.
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: Yeah, you know that's that's really that's like a minute,
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: two minutes like usually I do like twenty minutes a day.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: I thought you had add adhd I do it.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: That's why that helped me fight it, you know, what
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: I mean.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: I tried it. I can't get my mind to sit still.
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: You're not supposed to sit still.
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: That's that's a myth that you're supposed to Oh, clear
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: your mind. No, you allow everything to flow. You just
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: gotta be still. It's about being still and breathing, and
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: then you focus on your breath and then you start
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: you literally get a youthphoric sensation like like then doorphins
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: and dopamine is released and you're like, whoa, I get
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: it now, And that probably happens around like minute eight
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: or nine. But it's just just focusing on breathing and
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: still let every thought happen. Don't try to control your thoughts.
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: That's not meditating.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: You let them thought and they just But what happened
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: is your thoughts will just slow down. Just focus on breathing.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: Or they tell you get a you get a mantra.
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: So some people say own or you pick a word.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: You want to focus on money, it's like money. You
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: say money for eight minutes straight, money gonna happen. But
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: it's as simple as that, Like, it's not as not
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: as it's really like, especially because I have ADHD, because
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: I'm always going like I value quiet time, value stillness,
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: and I tend to meditate it like four in the
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: morning where everything else is quiet. Sometimes I fall asleep.
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: I mean, but as long as I can get fifteen and.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: You get up out of bed and sit on you
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: God to that.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: If you stay in bed, you're gonna go back to sleep.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: So you got it.
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: But you find a space the sun's out, if it's like,
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: get you a little area, okay, and.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: Put put your little music on and vibes and just
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: sit and breathe and talk to God.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: Well, I uh, I appreciate your time. I did walk
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: around your office. I was looking for like chairs and tables,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: trying to figure out how to do this station. But
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: you look far from.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: Organized.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: No, your brain is the studio. There's is literally so
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: much going on everywhere. I secretly hoping that you will
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: allow us to do like a little tour following you around.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: If you don't, that's cool. But when I look at this,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: this is my really believe your brain operates. He's got
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: the daily Cannon show, he's got class, the council, the
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: kids room, I.
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: Got a nursery up.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: Did you go in my office? I couldn't find next
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: to the nursery.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Where is it?
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: It looked like a jump room. Right.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: Oh, it was like a bunch of junk. Right next
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: to it was the one in the corner with the
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: little teddy bears. It's like the little porcelain teddy bear things.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that is my office. That's like, wait, yeah,
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: that's I mean, it's a bunch of junk and you're
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: talking about the bear bricks.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: There was one next to the kids room. It looked
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: dark and like shadowy in there. I was like, I'm
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: staying away from that room.
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: I think that was the one. But again, it's all
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: over face the conference room.
